Salt Lake City Police Department Seeks Memorabilia for Museum By Robert Zamaro
Sometimes, you really don’t know what you have until you lose it. Consider the following: On March 10, 1851, LDS Church President Brigham Young appointed Jedediah M. Grant to be the first mayor of Salt Lake City, who in turn authorized Elam Luddington as the city’s first police chief. The men served

Of course the city kept records of the men who served in blue and a few police items of significant historical value were stored away, but police officials never really realized how valuable the small things were that were

personal attachments given to such items by the rank and file members. Most of it was never considered worth keeping. As a result, almost all of it has been lost to time or was destroyed. However, times have changed. Today, the SLCPD is making a concerted effort to find and preserve what is left of any discarded and forgotten police relics that may exist out in the community, with an eye towards appreciating the value of today’s law enforcement tools and equipment. Inspired by the vision and dedication of past SLCPD officers Albert Rogers, Don Campbell, Steve Diamond, and Judy Dencker, to locate and preserve police relics, the SLCPD now has a

museum to display their historical relics in for posterity. Founded in 1990, the Salt Lake City Police Museum is located on the eighth floor of the Public Safety building at 315 East and 200 South. It is home to some interesting and unusual items reflective of their times and circumstances. While the items in this unique police museum are not easily accessible to the general public at the moment they soon will be when the relics and memorabilia will be moved and exhibited on the main floor of the new Public Safety building now under construction at 300 East 500 South. It is scheduled to open in 2013. One relic the SLCPD would like to get their

Consignment Store Shock - How I Found Fine Art in a Country Store By A. H. Scott
Browsing in a consignment store, a picture on the wall caught my attention. As I walked closer, the scene looked familiar. I took a few more steps. William Mangum had signed the print. I realized it was a limited edition print. How could it be? A limited edition print by artist William Mangum was for sale in a consignment store? I could hardly believe my eyes or my thoughts. Standing in the country store, I remember asking myself, "How did this print travel here? And, why would someone want to sell it?" My thoughts paused momentarily. I asked, "Is that really a Mangum print?" The sales associate responded, "Yes. You can buy it for $300." Although still in shock, the cost was more than I had with me. I went back to the store two weeks later. The print was still there. I spoke with the store owner once again about the limited edition print. She said, "If you're still interested in the print, I can give you a better price." I asked, "How much better?" Her response was, "$225, plus tax." I began asking more questions about "The Spirit of Greensboro" print. I was curious. It had left an unforgettable picture in my mind. I finally went to the Mangum Fine Art Gallery. That's where I asked the question. "Do you carry The Spirit of Greensboro print?" The sales associate referred to a
catalog and said, "Today, the print alone sells for $500." Originally released in 1989, the print sold for $85. I spilled the beans, "I found the print in a consignment store." The associate's response was, "Where? We'll buy it from the store or we'll buy it from you." My thoughts returned to the print in the consignment store. The sales associate asked, "What's the name of the store with the print?" I paused and said, "That won't be necessary. I'll take care of it myself." I contacted the owner of the store and asked if the Mangum print was still available? "Yes, are you still interested?" Faced with a challenging decision, I said yes. My mom and I went to the consignment store and purchased the print. You could see the color draining from the man's face as my mom told him the entire story. He asked, "The print is worth five hundred dollars?" They chatted while I secured the print in the trunk of my car. He said, "Your daughter was wise to ask questions." He was right. It pays to ask questions. I'm the happy owner of a William Mangum limited edition, "Spirit of Greensboro" print. Who would think you could find fine art in a consignment store?

was lucky enough to be taken in and cared for by the department. One account describes Bunjo as having standing watch with officers, answering roll calls, and having marched out with shift changes. Bunjo is reported to have even had his own police badge. His career ended in 1916, when he returned from patrol and died beside an officer’s desk By all accounts, Bunjo was dearly loved by all who knew him. After Bunjo died several officers ponied-up the money and had him stuffed. He became a regular fixture at the department’s old headquarters on 100 South State Street until he was eventually moved to a back room storage area. From there Rogers rescued him during the move the department made to a newer headquarters building in the late 1960s. There is a
standing All-Points Bulletin out for Bunjo’s whereabouts. The stuffed mascot was last seen with Rogers on November 18, 1971. After Rogers died in 1977, all trace of the dog was lost. Today, Lt. Mike Ross is the department’s museum curator and historian. He is spearheading the efforts to recover and preserve any SLCPD memorabilia that may still be out in the community. He is asking the public for donations of any historical SLCPD memorabilia so it can be added to the department’s collection. Those with donations are asked to call the Salt Lake City Police Department at (801) 799-3000 and ask for Ross. The SLCPD Museum is open by appointment.

Retrophilia - The Love of All Things Retro

The word "Retro" implies that something is old fashioned, timeless or classic. The word itself is Latin, it is used as a prefix and means "backwards' or "in the past." This application can be seen in words such as "retrospective" meaning a nostalgic view of the past and "retrograde" referring to a movement toward the past rather than progress toward the future. Most people will have heard the word "Retro" associated with the fifties era but it is relevant to a much broader spectrum of cultural, social and artistic applications. To describe something as retro is to assign it a positive label of quirkiness or charisma but also to infer that although it is no longer obtainable it is still highly desirable. You will find the word "Retro" associated with many areas of popular culture such as fashion, art, sport, music and
erotica. In the 1960's the usage of the word "Retro" increased when the American Space Program used it to describe a rocket which generates thrust in a direction opposite to that of the spacecraft's motion in orbit, hence the "retrograde rocket." Other such examples are "Retro Chic" encompassing old fashioned styles such as poodle skirts from the 1950's. Retro Art, also referred to as Retro Clipart, is derived
from pop art which was developed in the 1940's and 1950's. Retro Art usually refers specifically to advertising artwork created during that period. Printing technology was in it's infancy at that time and the majority of printed materials were restricted to one color. It was these limitations that drove professional illustrators to develop a style of artwork which was striking and could be reproduced easily
within the restraints of the industry's technology at that time. The development of retro art was also influenced by the Art Nouveau revolution in France at the turn of

recognized as an Italian poster art designer. Cappiello worked outside of the realms of traditional art creativity. He used very bold figures in his artistry and he painted in such a way that the figures on his posters seemed to jump out at those who saw them. His first exhibit was in 1892. He made a name for himself during what was later dubbed as the 20th century poster boom. Leonetto Cappiello signed his first printer contract in 1900. He would go on to devote his life and his creative works to designs captured on posters. During his career, Leonetto Cappiello designed more than 530 advertising posters. One excellent example of his style is
"Cafe Martin Poster" (circa 1909) which featrues a genie bouncing atop a cup of steaming coffee. The eye is first attracted to the joyful genie, but then it is inexorably drawn to the colorful cup, and that evokes the coffee. Cappiello's designs are never haphazard; he knew exactly what he was doing. The design proved so successful that the company used it again several years later. Leonetto Cappiello died in 1842. As with most famous artists, even after his death, his work was sought after. Today, many people look for his work to add to their collections. Retro music referred commonly to dance music in the U.S. during the 1990's and was originally known as New Wave music. The advancement of electronic equipment during this era contributed to the popularization of electronic music, a departure from traditional and electromechanical instruments. Although this drove its movement into the mainstream not all dance music at that time was considered Retro music. Dance music and the psychedelic style, trance, psytrance etc. are still very much alive and kicking today. Nowadays, retro music only refers to music from the retro period. Retro erotica can be classified as modern photography in an older style. This distinguishes it from vintage erotica which is actual period photographs or films. Retro erotica is typically photographic hardcore pornography or non-naked pin-up images. It dates from the 1970's, sometimes
earlier and features specific styles of lingerie such as bullet bras, garters or girdles as well as hairstyles, props and makeup from that era. Retro sports garments are sought after items usually from the 1970's and 1980's and include items such as football jackets, jerseys and t-shirts with previous club logos. Their designs usually recall the past by using color combinations and lines in the sides representative of those periods. One such example is the FIFA World Cup held in Mexico in 1970. Retro sports garments are so popular now that brands including Puma, Nike and Adidas have divisions dedicated to this trend, and not to be excluded from this lucrative market some football, basketball and baseball clubs have also reintroduced their former garments for sale. In this world of rapidly changing modern technology it is perhaps surprising to learn that retrogaming, gaming on vintage computers or vintage game consoles, is fast becoming a popular pastime. Retro gamers are commonly using outdated systems such as Atari 2600, Dream-
cast and Nintendo Entertainment System. The Atari 2600 video game console was released in October 1977. It has been credited with promoting the use of microprocessor-based hardware and cartridges which use game code. Actually it was the Fairchild Channel F that first used this format but it was the Atari 2600 which familiarized the gaming world with the plug-in concept. The desire for a sense of nostalgia, though unsentimental, is the driving force behind all things retro. It links us to specific times and trends in history and reminds us of where we came from. Retro is inspiring, educational and sometimes frivolous. It allows us to reminisce in the comfort of our very modern lives and to explore the trends, technology, fashions and attitudes of the good old days. In the words of the American poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892) "The Past - the dark unfathomed retrospect! The teeming gulf - the sleepers and the shadows! The past! the infinite greatness of the past! For what is the present after all but a growth out of the past?"
