Maxfield Parrish’s Enchanting Dreamscapes
There has been a lot written about Maxfield Parrish, the painter and illustrator, who died in 1966 at age ninty-five. He is often described as the man who
enchanted millions with his visions of paradise and with his interpretation of the color blue or “Parrish blue”as it has come to Continue on Page 2

be called. Parrish studied architecture at Haverford College, but later enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His first illustration was for Harper’s Bazaar, in 1895. Recognizing Parrish’s talent, William D. Moffat, writing in a popular magazine in 1900, said, “There is humor in much of Mr. Parrish’s work, and of the finest kind. The humorist in him, however, is balanced by the poet, and frequently the two are exquisitely combined. The poetic vein in his nature is exalted and spiritual, the humor quaint and whimsical.” By 1922, Parrish had established himself as one of America’s most accomplished magazine illustrators. He was often called “the common man’s Rembrandt” since his work was widely acclaimed by ordinary people as evidenced in 1922, when his painting, Daybreak, became a decoration sensation that sold more than 200,000 prints. Vintage Ephemera
There are all kinds of collectors in the world. Some people focus on getting the latest and greatest of what is hot right now. Many however, look to the past to find their treasure. Vintage collectibles are a huge market and you might be sitting on a huge pile of the stuff right in your own home. A very popular area of collecting is saving antique and vintage paper materials. Now

you might think that this would only include famous documents or photographs. Those certainly do get collected, but there is also a ton of stuff being sold on places like eBay with a m u c h lower profile. This old paper "stuff" is o f t e n referred to as ephemera. Ephemera is made up of comm o n , every day items that are no longer available anymore. Old advertising, magazine ads, vintage labels and

even wrappers from some products get collected by people for a variety of reasons. Some popular old
perfume bottles, cigar labels and just about any old advertising that is representative of another era. Ephemera is certainly

not limited to labels though. Old love notes, ticket stubs, billing statements, and pretty much anything
that normally would have been disposed of by most people can catch some collector's interest. Reasons for collecting these old items are as varied as the collectors themselves. Some of the old ephemera is purchased by people who use it in art work. Some ephemera is just purchased to be admired as it brings back memories of a time gone by. Whatever the reason, the market is real. If you have boxes of old items tucked away in some dusty corner, you might just have yourself some buried treasure that someone would like to add to their collection. Estate Sales: A Guide to the Fair and Equitable Disposal of a Loved One's Personal Property By John ODonahue After the death of a loved one, there is frequently a large quantity of personal property which must be divided amongst the family of the deceased, or sold. This can be a time of real family stress as disputes arise over the distribution of items not specifically listed in the will. A degree of gentle firmness on the part of the executor will be needed as family tensions come to a head. It is important to understand that it is the executor of the estate who is legally responsible for handling the sale, rather than the relatives of the deceased. If the property is in probate, the decisions of the probate court must be followed explicitly. An estate sale is an excellent way to convert personal property into cash quickly, and in a fair and equitable way. An estate sale may include family heirlooms, furniture, cars and boats, and even livestock, real estate and other assets held by the estate. It is often a better idea to dispose of real estate, livestock, cars and boats separately, however. While simple estate sales of the personal property of the deceased do not normally require any licenses or permits, the executor should consult with an attorney to ensure compliance with all legal requirements. Estate sales are normally handled either as auctions, or on a first come, first served basis, like a sort of super garage sale. If an auction format is used, and the estate sale is held in the home, buyers can walk from room to room inspecting the
items for sale, and deciding what to bid on. The auction format is frequently conducted by a professional auctioneer or estate liquidator, who will take responsibility for appraising and cataloging the items for sale, handling the advertising, and providing tables, chairs, display cases, signs and staff. A big advantage of dealing with a professional auctioneer or estate liquidator is that the professionals often attract a following of private collectors and dealers who will pay top dollar at an invitation only sale preceding the public liquidation. Most professional liquidators will charge a commission of the net, after such costs as labor, advertising and security. This commission may be anywhere from 30-50 percent of proceeds. The best place to hold an estate sale is at the home of the deceased, prior to the sale of the home itself. Scheduling of the estate sale should be coordinated with the realtor handling the sale of the home, since a furnished house "shows better." Ideally, an estate liquidation will leave the property empty, cleaned out and ready to sell, making the entire process that much easier for the family to deal with. A professionally managed estate liquidation will most probably also maximize the proceeds from the sale. About the Author:John O'Donahue

The world of hot rods may never have become as popular had it not been for Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. Ed Roth was not only a mechanical genius he is also revered for being the artistic creator of "Rat Fink" a
cartoon icon that became one of the beloved mascots of his generation during the 1960s. For Roth, those caricatures he created were not only imaginative they were just as unique and outrageous as those over-sized hot rods

that he constructed from the ground up. Roth also created a number of other "over the top" cartoon characters but it may be "Rat Fink" that is the most well known. Roth was not only a brilliant artist and cartoonist he was also a hot rod enthusiast who built and customized cars. He is credited with helping boost the popularity of hot rods.
Surprisingly Roth is recognized more for his cartoon drawings than he is for his innovative genius at c o n structi n g cars. Yet he w a s one of the innovative geniuses who truly took hot rodding to the next level. To him the visual appeal and bodywork was just as important as the performance of the cars and their overall engine design. Roth was also one of the first hot rod
enthusiasts to create new types of fiberglass bodywork for these powerful racing machines. Without Roth's expertise and innovations they could well have remained backyard projects for "shadetree mechanics." It was all about achieving a delicate balance in the mind of Ed Roth, and the balance was between fearsome engine power and grand body design. Many Baby Boomers are aware of the Roth influence. They may well remember all of
Page 8
those model car kits that were sold during the 60s with emblems of Rat Fink and other Roth inspired characters. There were even some Rat Fink comic books that eventually hit the market for a short period of time. Roth remained a hero of the counterculture art movement for most of his life. He was equally revered by the fans and engineering experts that populate the world of hot rods. His Kustom Kulture racing machines have commanded top dollar

Ed Big Daddy Roth Continued from page 8
The cartoon character known as Rat Fink was just one of Roth's many contributions to the hot rod world. It is said that Roth despised the popular Mickey Mouse icon and the Walt Disney character inspired him to create his own unique "monster" version of Mickey. During the 1950s and 1960s this counter-culture, cartoon rat became a symbol of both Kustom Kulture cars and the world of hot rods. Rat Fink, with his bloodshot, oversized eyes, yellow teeth and red shirt was soon adorning hot rods all across the nation. Rat Fink and Ed Big Daddy Roth remained popular over the years but they both enjoyed a resurgence of popularity during the 1980s and 1990s, particularly on the East Coast.
