TOOLS FOR SUCCESS SAFETY
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Thinking, demanding and delivering safety in all aspects of our business is our #1 Core Value. Consistently safe job sites are the result of training, on-going focus and accountability. It is our job to ensure the safety of passengers, public, airport and airline personnel as well as our construction labor force. We stand behind our safety motto, “If it’s not safe, I won’t do it and I won’t let others do it.”
We’ve delivered state-of-the-art terminals, security centers, hangars, and parking structures. We’re just as comfortable and confident working at giant, bustling airport hubs as we are directing projects at smaller regional facilities. Our proven management approach is based on airport program structures, separating administrative and procurement duties, construction coordination, execution and safety direct-reports.
SECURITY
LEAN CONSTRUCTION
With constantly evolving security restrictions at airports, careful attention to detail is a must. We work closely with airport authorities, police and fire departments, TSA, FAA, Customs and Border Patrol to develop and employ strategies for ensuring and maintaining the airport security at all times.
Walbridge is a Lean construction leader and innovator. More than a list of tools, our Lean Construction program is about understanding methods, applications and benefits to provide the right tools for the right job, applying Lessons Learned and reviewing our processes to increase productivity and reduce waste.
OPERATIONS & SCHEDULING
SUSTAINABILITY
A well-run project demands that each phase transitions seamlessly from one to another, with several functions overlapping. Our construction professionals understand these demands and use cutting edge scheduling technology and rigorous communication to ensure successful implementation and on-time delivery coordination.
Walbridge is dedicated to providing environmental stewardship to the communities and ecosystems in which we build. In 2010, we became the first contractor in the United States to complete an airport terminal designed under the LEED® green building certification program.
HIGHLIGHTED
EXPERIENCE
DETROIT METRO AIRPORT NORTH TERMINAL REDEVELOPMENT Romulus, Michigan One of the first terminals to be fully designed and constructed post-9/11, the 850,000 square foot, two-level, 26-gate terminal modernized the entire airport terminal complex and created a world-class airport facility. The new terminal was strategically brought online while not causing disruption to existing operations and security, completing extensive site infrastructure work, including the removal and replacement of 260,000 square yards of apron paving and soil remediation.
NORTHWEST FLORIDA BEACHES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TERMINALS & SUPPORT FACILITIES Panama City, Florida Designed to be the first certified LEEDŽ Silver airport terminal in the nation, the Northwest Florida-Panama City International Airport Terminal is the first greenfield international commercial service airport to open in the United States in more than a decade. Even as the low-bid contractor on the project, Walbridge played a significant role in developing the value engineering ideas that saved the project from being severely delayed or cancelled. By acting as a partner in each customer’s success, Walbridge helps its customers reach their goals.
SAN ANTONIO AIRPORT AUTHORITY NEW PARKING FACILITY San Antonio, Texas To improve parking availability, Walbridge and its local partner constructed a new 2,800 space, five-level long-term parking garage four months ahead of schedule and more than $5 million under budget. With a structural system of precast concrete, there was a significant amount of underground utility work in the project scope, which involved work of electrical, gas, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, communications and hydronic piping services.
EMBRAER AIRCRAFT HOLDING, LLC AIRCRAFT PRODUCTION FACILITY Melbourne, Florida Embraer Aircraft Holding’s new executive jet assembly, paint and showroom complex, located on a 25-acre site in Melbourne, Florida, is the Brazilian firm’s first manufacturing facility in North America. Producing Embrarer’s Phenom 100 and Phenom 300 jets, the complex consists of an 80,000 square foot production hangar, a 27,000 square foot paint building and Embraer’s Global Customer Center—a 76,000 square foot design and delivery hub. The facility includes a first-of-its-kind down-draft forced wind tunnel painting filtration system to improve air quality inside and outside the shop.
DELTA BAGGAGE HANDLING SYSTEM Orlando, Florida
NORTHWEST AIRLINES TWIN BAY BOEING 747 HANGAR Romulus, Michigan Our innovative approach to the 747 Maintenance Hangar project yielded a building a third lighter than the original design, saving 1,000 tons of steel. With a 489’ clear span consisting of a trussed, steel-braced frame superstructure on concrete spread footings, the value-engineered redesign, along with changes to mechanical systems, saved the owner $1.2 million. Extensive planning and an innovative phasing plan reduced the number of phases while accelerating the project schedule.
In collaboration with VanDerLande Industries, the world leader in material handling systems, Walbridge provided construction management services for improvements to the baggage handling system of the main terminal, which accommodated growth demands at this central Florida international airport.
SOUTHWEST GEORGIA REGIONAL AIRPORT DELTA AIRLINES TERMINAL Albany, Georgia Walbridge served as the general contractor for this new, two-gate Delta Airlines terminal that displays high-end finishes and displays, ticket counters, waiting areas, restrooms, passenger screening, baggage operations, departure lounge with laptop stations, concessions, luggage carousels, rental car counter and administrative areas. We identified $564,011 in potential savings to the client, who accepted 99 percent of the suggestions. The biggest savings was found in the use of manufactured stone for the building’s façade, a savings of roughly $370,000.
METRO AIRPORT NORTHWEST AIRLINES MIDFIELD TERMINAL ROADS, BRIDGES & TUNNELS Romulus, Michigan Walbridge completed five contracts for the roadways and bridges that services the Midfield Terminal at Detroit’s Metropolitan Airport. These five contracts involved two, long cut-and-cover tunnels under the crosswind runways, a taxiway bridge connecting the existing terminal complex to the east side of the airfield, more than 1.8 miles of roadway and the access network of bridges, ramps and roads connecting the south access road to the Midfield Terminal.
WITCHITA AIRPORT TERMINAL RENOVATION Wichita, Kansas The new, two-level, Wichita Airport terminal will feature ticketing, baggage, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening areas, a business center, concessions, restrooms and various administration offices. Walbridge, along with our local joint venture partner, Key Construction, will also build departure lounges and six vertical circulation cores for tarmac access with construction of the new terminal, which will be located near the airport’s existing terminal. This $100 million project is planned for completion in 2014.
US DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY H-60R HELICOPTER HANGAR Jacksonville, Florida The new hangar, located at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida, is now home to five Helicopter Maritime squadrons from and houses approximately 57 MH-60R Seahawk Romeo helicopters. The state-of-the-art facility provides the Navy with the best in modern infrastructure while holding the distinction as being the second ‘greenest’ hangar in the Navy. The hangar also houses more than 1,400 of the United States finest men and women.
ORLANDO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – BP-432 BHS OPTIMIZATION OF PODS C & D Orlando, Florida Faced with a critical challenge of meeting their major airline tenants’ needs for baggage handling capacity, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority assessed Checked Baggage Inspection System (CBIS) capacity alternatives across several CBIS screening “pods” in the airport’s main terminal. Based on a unique best-value approach to BHS system delivery, GOAA hired Walbridge to modernize the existing CBIS Pods C and D by implementing better tracking methods, improving gapping with new queue conveyors, providing removal path capabilities and upgrading the existing Checked Baggage Resolution Area (CBRA) operations. This multi-phased $34 million project is planned for completion in 2015.
