For just $5, you and your buddies can get more than a night’s use out of that hobgoblin mask. (Note: Costumes and lights are required for the race.) BLAKE ADAMS “THE MENTALIST” When does 6 become 9? When Blake Adams twists your perception beyond your known senses into a realm of clairvoyance, creating the “illusion” of a sixth sense. Known as The Mentalist, Adams blends displays of ESP, telepathy, prediction, and psycho-kinesis into a mesmerizing event. With the intent of exploring the potential of the human psyche, Adams will make pretzels out of your minds as he twists and turns reality before your eyes. “Through the combination of psychology, suggestions, misdirection, and of course a little theatrics, I demonstrate the power of the untapped mind,” says Adams. Silverstein Album: This is How the Wind Shifts

Release Date: October 15, 2013

Rating: Sounds Like: Rob Thomas Jon McLaughlin Howie Day

Track Listing: Best I Ever Had Make a Move Finest Hour I’m Gonna Try Who’s Gonna Save Us Everything Will Change Need Heartbreak Every Little Bit Different for Girls Leading Man

“Overall, the point of this album is not to prove the existence of fate, or to disprove it. It’s a discussion of life, of loss, of success within failure, of failure within success, of the struggle between your actions and your feelings, and how those don’t always go together,” said Told. The album pushes boundaries set by chart-topping acts such as Avenged Sevenfold and Papa Roach. Told’s ear-piercing vocals span the range between vocal-cord-shredding screamo to aggressive boy-band, establishing a signature tenor and ferocity. Two of the new additions to the re-released album—the tracks “I Will Illuminate” and “Kill the Lights”—have mirrored effects on each other. These two, coincidentally, have the most cumulative downloads and spike in popularity of the whole 21-track set (this probably helped the push for a re-release). The addition of the acoustic renditions of former tracks also adds depth to the album and a much needed balance to Told’s overtly deep lyricism.

Originally debuted earlier this year, Silverstein has re-released their sixth album with an additional seven tracks (four acoustic renditions and three brand new renditions). Frontman Shane Told describes the album as an unorthodox approach to a standard, story-built track list. Rather than a common theme, the 14 original tracks tell seven different stories with a parallel alternate angle for each story—one song per angle.

Gavin DeGraw

“Make a Move”

Release Date: Oct. 11, 2013 Ten years since his emergence as a solo singer/songwriter on Chariot—an album that reached platinum status in the states—DeGraw has grown evermore restless in his craft. His ability to push the boundaries of creativity within the industry leaves him constantly grasping for deeper, richer expression. Make a Move brandishes the now-so-typical trademarks of the New York-native: soul, blues, heartbreak, and the occasional power-ballad. Even with growth in his vocals and the strength of his lyrics (showcased in tracks like “Best I Ever Had”), the album shows an artist with even more class, pairing strings, brass, and heavy percussion in these songs in intelligent ways that force you to press the download button. Recommended Tracks: Miss Jackson, Girl that You Love

Scotty McCreery

“See You Tonight”

Release Date: Oct. 15, 2013 Scotty McCreery—winner of American Idol Season 10—has released his second studio album (not including his Christmas record) with a title track that sat high on the country charts since its debut. His initial album was certified platinum nationwide and won him Best New Artist from the American Country Awards and the Academy of Country Music. See You Tonight shows us a more polished version of the Carolina-rooted vocals that won him a golden ticket to Hollywood. The album is already sitting atop the iTunes country chart, derailing Luke Bryan’s summer release and projecting it into future platinum status. The disc’s title track—released weeks ago—has been sitting in the top ten country downloads since going live. The 13-song track list, with a majority co-written by Scotty, gives listeners a richness far beyond the singer’s actual years in the business. Recommended Tracks: Get Gone with You, Feelin’ It

Anberlin

“Devotion: Vital”

Release Date: Oct 15, 2013 The only thing negative we can say about this new Christian-Alt release is that it’s slightly confusing. Vital is intended to be the new release. However, a two-disc rendition of the album with extra songs and some live versions was released a day earlier under the name “Devotion.” Devotion contains all of the 12 tracks on Vital plus an additional 19. We’ll focus on Vital being the primary release, a record where the band returned to their former producer, Aaron Sprinkle, to help them create the most aesthetically aggressive album of their career. Lead singer Stephen Christian reignites the passion behind the vocals which gives Anberlin their trademark indie, electro-pop rock sound. Whether you go for the main feature or the extended (early?) release, you’ll hear a polished sound from a band that’s gone back to their roots—much to their acclaim. Toss well to combine, and then transfer to prepared baking dish. 8. Place bread in a food processor and pulse with two or three on/off turns to form large coarse crumbs (you should have about 2 cups). Transfer to a small bowl; mix with melted butter. Sprinkle remaining Fontina and the breadcrumbs over pasta mixture. Bake until top is browned, about 14 to 15 minutes. Sprinkle with fresh parsley for a touch of green.

Fiesta Texas doesn’t skimp on fright. In fact, they’ve just installed four new attractions to get your heart rate elevated. New for 2013, Circus Berzerkus is home to the most demented carnival of horrors on earth, including demented clowns, sinister freaks, and creatures tormenting every living soul that wanders past. Circus Berzerkus will play with your mind as you walk the grounds of a carnival gone insane. However, in the middle of the Circus lies something even more sinister. If you ever watched It as a child, clowns forever became terrifying, horrible creatures in your mind afterward. If you want to confront your fear head-on, then the Fear House 3D is the place. It’s a twisted circus of horrors with insane clowns who roam the halls waiting for new souls to prey on. The demented haunted house is a funhouse nightmare come to life, filled with illusions that’ll make even the most sane guests lose their minds.

Halloween, otherwise known as college students favorite holiday, is quickly approaching. Like everything else this school year, time has flown by. Too old to knock door-to-door for cavities yet still interested in something holiday related? Theme parks have a field day with Halloween, pulling out all of the best props and scares to make sure that everyone leaves the park needing a nightlight to sleep. Fiesta Texas at Six Flags San Antonio is no exception, and it’s only a three-hour drive from Waco.

Fright Fest Isn’t for the Faint of Heart

Other attractions include the Texas Troll-Way and Total Darkness, the latter being a completely dark haunted house. Perhaps you should tell your family you love them before you visit. Fiesta Texas includes some of their fan-favorite thrills from the past, as well as Halloween-themed shows and access to roller coaster rides throughout the entire duration of the day. Ghouls 12 years and younger may wear a full costume, which includes masks and face painting, if accompanied by an adult family member. If they are alone or with other children, then no full facial makeup or masks will be allowed. Younger guests may bring accessories such as plastic swords, magic wands, crowns, and cat or devil ears. Toy guns, pitchforks, and accessories with bleeding features will not be allowed. Accessories must be pliable and non-sharp plastic. All other ghouls that are 13 years or older are allowed to wear costumes with the following provisions: no masks; costumes must not have inappropriate language or photos; partial face paint is allowed as long as it does not disguise the facial features; and no handheld accessories of any kind are allowed in the park, such as toy guns, chains, chainsaws, swords, devil pitchforks, magic wands, or any other spooky frills. The park suggests bringing a jacket or sweatshirt for cool evenings. They certainly wouldn’t want you to catch your death of cold. The park is a smoke-free facility. This is a safety measure — smoking attracts demons and werewolves, and you really don’t want to catch their attention. Smoking is allowed in designated smoking areas only; you won’t be safe from demons and werewolves, but at least everyone else will. Weapons are not allowed in the park so please leave wooden stakes, silver bullets, garlic and holy water at home. It doesn’t take growing up on a farm to realize the undeniable good gained from spending time with hands dug into dirt, hours spent sprouting freckles in the sun, or simply spending time with real people who believe in what's natural. An annual event presented by the World Hunger Relief, Fall Farm Day is hours of this simpler life. Farm fresh food presented by local vendors is the main focus of the day’s activities, but there’s more to do than just marvel over ruby red tomatoes and earthy smelling potatoes. In addition to the fresh produce, local artisans and vendors will be featured and selling various goods.

Families are invited to learn about canning vegetables for the winter, traditional Victorian cooking methods, and to enjoy Victorian holiday recipes. Priced at only $5, the event is an affordable few hours of entertainment and history all tied into one neat package. “What if an Entire City Could Feed Itself?” By Sara Gilmore

DISCOVER

••••••

Hunger kills more people worldwide per year than AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. “Worldwide” seems like a far-away term, but right here in our own city and state, we aren’t exempt from the hunger epidemic. Studies show that 20 percent of Texans are food insecure, meaning that families may be working and even using some federal resources; but at the end of the day or week, they just can’t put food on the table for three meals a day. Texas is the second hungriest state in the nation, and ranks 11th highest in child food insecurity, with over 1.8 million foodinsecure children. This is where the Texas Hunger Initiative comes in. THI develops and implements strategies to end hunger through policy, education, and community organization & development. THI will host its Together at the Table hunger

summit this week as part of a collaborative effort of several organizations to address hunger throughout the week. Rosemary Townsend, Baylor’s director of business affairs and community partnerships, said it takes the combined efforts of several entities to effectively see hunger addressed in Texas and in Waco. “Everybody in Waco who is concerned with hunger

presented at the summit encourages people who qualify for programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program) to sign up for them so that hungry kids and families can be fed. “If people qualify but don’t sign up, then that money is allocated; and that’s money on the table that could have helped summer feeding programs and SNAP,” said Townsend. “So there has been a big push

and coming up with different strategies to address hunger have all kind of gathered together in this same period of time to call attention and create awareness,” Townsend said. “There are numerous solutions, and I personally do not believe there is one single solution.” Townsend said that there are 100 VISTAs (Volunteers in Service to America) coming from New York to be a part of the conference, as well as city, state, and federal officials. One of the approaches to hunger

on Jeremy Everett’s (director of THI) part to do that.” In addition to the two-day hunger summit (Thursday and Friday), there are events scheduled all week on Baylor’s campus and in the Waco area to raise awareness about hunger. On Wednesday, the Waco Downtown Farmer’s Market will be on Baylor’s campus from 1-5pm., there is a movie at the Baylor Community Garden Friday night, and off campus, the World Hunger Relief Farm is hosting Farm Day all day on Saturday.

Townsend will be presenting at the hunger summit on behalf of the Baylor Campus Kitchen Project, which plays a key role in addressing the hunger issue in Waco and also happens to be the only Campus Kitchen in the state of Texas. Campus Kitchen Project is a nation-wide initiative. “The campus kitchen project has an approach to hunger that I love,” said Townsend. Teams of students visit all of Baylor’s dining facilities Monday through Friday and pick up food that was originally prepared for students but never put on steam tables. Much of that food can’t be saved until the next day; so the teams weigh the food and take its temperature to ensure it’s safe and then take it to different places around town that have ongoing programs to feed the hungry. “So what could have ended up in a landfill is now being rescued to feed hungry people,” said Townsend.

and serving the community at the same time.” The holistic approach to addressing hunger is what Townsend said is so neat about it, and it's also the topic of a film being shown in Baylor’s Community Garden as part of the week’s festivities. “It’s just a wonderful community-wide partnership,” Townsend said. “Our Community Garden’s purpose is entirely philanthropic and educational.” The film being shown Friday night is called Farm-City, State and is more of an umbrella solution for not only feeding the hungry but also for creating healthy communities. The tagline of the movie is “What if an entire city could feed itself?” David Barrow, the film’s producer-director, is a Waco native and Baylor graduate.

Some of the organizations the Campus Kitchen Project partners with and delivers food to around Waco include Mission Waco, Salvation Army, and Saint Luke’s.

“He proposes, ‘What if the restaurants in town had seasonal produce, meat from local producers, and as a result of that you’ve got a smaller carbon footprint. It benefits our local economy, people will get wonderful, fresher local foods,’” Townsend said.

Baylor has another section of students who are nutrition and food science students who contribute to the Campus Kitchen Project by preparing food from scratch with either donations from Baylor’s Community Garden or from donations they get from other sources.

The film focuses on Austin, but Townsend said this is an area that could really thrive on local food products if the education was there to teach community members.

“These are students who are using their discipline to put theory into practice, and they are actually trained and licensed then to run the commercial kitchen,” Townsend said. “So it’s benefiting them in their educational fields

What if we had a robust system of farmer’s markets and community gardens? What if commercial farmers planted a row to feed the hungry? All of these questions are being raised as a part of the Hunger Summit to move towards a healthier Waco.

Farm-City, State By Cheyenne Mueller The world just isn’t what it used to be. Any conversation with grandparents will reiterate that. “Back in my day,” they reflect, and you know the rest. As the times have changed, so too has fashion, politics, technology, and food awareness. Organic produce has been a constant topic of interest lately, and for good reason. Pesticides, GMOs, too much sodium, cholesterol, and high-fructose corn syrup are on the food-conscious mind. But the organic world can be daunting to take on. AnchorHD and Revival Films present Official Farm-City, a film about what it would look like if local farmers could feed an entire city with fresh, local produce. Focusing on Austin, the film follows Brent Johnson, of the Johnson Backyard Garden Farm, as he illustrates the importance of the farm’s history and his vision for Austin. Farm City also trails a local family through a 30-day adventure of sourcing and eating a local foods diet. Their trials and tribulations become an important test case for the market as a whole. The film’s objective is to educate people in other cities about ways to do something similar with their land and community.

A.C.O.D. INDIE (R)

Carrie

HORROR (R)

•••••• LOOK

Adult children of divorce is the subject of this indie comedy that apparently snuck into theaters. The cast makes this TV-looking indie a breezy sit. Adam Scott plays the titular adult child, and he’s very quickly thrown into the nightmare of negotiating a truce between his squabbling divorced parents so they can both show up to his brother’s (Clark Duke) wedding. His dad (Richard Jenkins) is now married to a much younger snob (Amy Poehler), and his mother (Catherine O’Hara) is also remarried (Ken Howard). Along the way he discovers the therapist (Jane Lynch) he saw as a child was actually a researcher writing a book about children of divorce. The set-up is simple, and the movie plays all these comedy stalwarts against each other scene after scene in a classic comedy-of-remarriage formula that Hollywood’s been using since the ‘30s. Not bad for a movie nobody’s talking about.

As long as horror classics are going to keep getting remade every couple decades, it’s nice to see directors like Kimberly Peirce at the helm. Her Carrie adaptation does the material (Stephen King’s novel and Brian DePalma’s ‘70s film) proud. Not even the weak casting of Chloe Grace Moretz as the blossoming outcast is a distraction. Moretz isn’t great at enunciation, but it doesn’t take much to land moments like when prom king contender Tommy Ross chases her through the halls to surprise-ask her to prom. “Stop trying to trick me,” she pleads. It’s heartbreaking. That’s because Peirce’s Carrie never loses sight of its real-world situation. This is a story about trickle-down power. Carrie’s mother (Julianne Moore) is a religious fundamentalist whose physical and emotional abuse of Carrie has made her submissive. She’s home-schooled Carrie for years until the state intervened for some unspecified reason, hence Carrie now shuffling her way through public school. The mean girl, Chris, leads the charge to bully the outcast, throwing tampons at Carrie in the opening as she gets her first period and doesn’t understand why she’s bleeding. In Peirce’s hands, the scene is traumatic but realistic. The girls’ behavior isn’t much larger than life, and Peirce makes sure to spotlight guilty Sue, Tommy’s girlfriend, who feels sorry for Carrie. Telekinesis or not, Carrie is one of the best high school movies in a year overflowing with them. What’s more, that domination/submission is learned behavior, as Peirce reveals in moments like Chris’ father yanking her arm in a meeting with the principal and in another scene when the otherwise sympathetic gym teacher (Judy Greer) slaps Carrie in hysteria. Something else Peirce gets is the way bullying has changed in the 21st century. Smartphones and social media allow the filming and broadcasting of humiliation, as in several major court cases lately and in the headline suicide of Tyler Clementi. What is Carrie if not a supernatural It Gets Better video? It’s the rare horror that’s on its way to a happy ending, courtesy of an honest, modest, coming-of-age fantasy. But then one last indignity unleashes hell, and the cycle of violence explodes
