Alaska The state of Alaska stood apart from its peers in that its capitol city was seemingly detached from the urban condition and placed into the wilderness.
The site’s overwhelming natural presence was of much greater impact than that of the city within it. Specifically, the juxtaposition between land and sea distinguished itself as a particular point of interest. Alaska’s shoreline is by far the longest of any state, and this unique and remarkable feature became the origin from which all design decisions would stem. It remains a strong imperitive to additionally demonstrate respect for the native culture, both past and contemporary. Building forms of the native tribes exhibit pragmatic solutions to the issues imposed by the climate, while the modern insistence on limited government and transperency instructed its own approach.

Goals
We would describe the purpose of our work in Juneau as the creation of an icon, one that represents the unique Alaskan experience. We drew inspiration from the most striking feature of this place- the intimate waltz between land and sea. To properly pay homage to this asset, we found it pivotal to address the shoreline and place chambers of government as anchors on either side of it. Bridging between the two would not only serve aesthetic objectives; it would also create a symbolism directly related to the desirable nature of site.
