Context
It’s interesting that how can we use the colour of red and blue to indicate. To differentiate warm and cold water, male and female, even communism and democracy. What we need to do is just as easy as apply those two colours on top of different objects or representations. It is almost scientifically true as a system which serves for any educated people. But can a uneducated people differentiate the context between different colour and objects? I would argue that. Because the whole context between colour and its representations had being socially constructed.
Left image: A photography work by artist Cao Guimar達es. Illustrate how the contexts between colours and objects make sense our everyday life.
The top left and bottom left images are Coca Cola Ads which designed for its New Zealand market. Here for the typical Coca Cola glass bottle, we have the visual contexts of a lady who wears bikini and few written words. Simply cold but relaxing light greyish blue as the background contrast with the bold massive shiny frozen Coca Cola bottle which is hugging by a hot happy lady who might stays in a hot weather. The context adds up so much flavour to this advertisement, although it looks so unreal and even bit weird. The other one with the yellow background has basically the same thing but bit exotic (for any other country) by the pacific flower on a pacific ethnical lady who has a darker skin colour. I guess it must be important for Coca Cola to add this one to the series, because NZ is originally not a European country at all. The context of New Zealand’s history does matter to this decision.
The other two where sitting on the top right side are obviously Christmas looking. As the Xmas is the biggest event for a typical European family indeed, it is important for any company to take the advantages of it. Although it’s not about any of its religious meaning. It’s just all about settings, the contexts which would remind the preferable emotions which relevant to the Xmas. However there might be no one would normally think of the Father Christmas’ feeling. He is suppose to be such a busy man because in this myth he has to satisfy every kids on the planet. So we see the kid who has shows his desires of reciving gifts, on the contrary, we see the Father Christmas who is taking a rest. He knows that there are children who need him through the eye contact, but that moment is just too enjoyable for him to stop relaxing. That is the refreshment. Although the kids is not willing to let the Father Christmas to have this moment. The Coca Cola is making that moment happening.
The special Playboy Cola Christmas edition seems nothing to do with Coca Cola, but the successful identity marketing of Coca Cola had made sense of this by the context of painting style, colour and the brand logo. The company was keep capturing different sorts of refreshments. For Playboy’s readers, its about only about sexual refreshes. Take a look historically, at the 70s where the time of Americans’ liberation of sex. I think the changing of most American people’s attitudes towards sex motivated Coca Cola to take the advantages of popular trends among the adult world, although this context literally had nothing to do with any kind of soft drink. But who cares again, advertising and promoting strategy is always about making connections between sophisticated products and different contexts, isn’t it? So, we might be able to see how Coca Cola take the advantages of the gay movement or Marijuana legalization movement, ect, in the near future.
On the left is the newest album cover from a Chinese rock band which had been strongly influenced by the traditional music styles. The name of the album is “Listen to the Mountain”, and the band’s name is the “mountain man”. This is a very simply piece of design but to be honest, I don’t think nowadays there is much bands deserve using the symbol that it has. The Taiji symbol is a Chinese cosmological term for the “Supreme Ultimate” state of undifferentiated absolute and infinite potentiality. It’s one of the most important part of Chinese primary thought which had been keep developing through few thousands years. But here I’m not going to explain as my understanding might not be correct. However I would argue that visually, this is the perfect example of how ideas or contexts can change the simplest things’ meanings to something ultimately big. Within the whole concept and context of Chinese cosmology, a circle had have a new meaning, it refers the state of the universe without the ultimate power. As the one that people commonly know as the most popular Chinese symbol in the world, it shows the process of how the universe had formed. The graphics looks real simple but for people to be able to understand, one has to spent lots of time to know what had happened in Chinese during the recent thousands years which is almost impossible. As the bottom left shows a illustration about the process how universe processed from nothing to everything before the most famous symbol even invented. Everything in this illustration has a direct connection between the symbol which comes out later. The symbol was created to make more sense for the whole theory. Back to the album, they kept the freshness of traditional music which comes from the mountain areas. By using instrument as simple as a leave which only grows around particular areas, they also use almost dialects only. Basically, they chose the Taiji symbol is because they want to refer the way how our ancestor understand the universe through experimenting the nature, and observe the way how nature operates.
As a simple geometrical graphic, similar symbol had appeared in several cultural. In Europe, Roman cultural has almost exactly a same symbol, but there is not thing much had been referred as an implement of the visuals. Same happened in the Celtic culture, within the changes of context, meaning changes dramatically. From something meaningful to something might just designed for decorative propose. Where else Korea, has been different compare to Roman and Celtic culture. Korean flag is almost a direct copy of that was written in the Chinese ancient philosophy book. There was a historical reason has to be concerned, as China was the most powerful country, it exported its culture to the other countries. For example, its language, art and philosophy thoughts.

The Ego
Freud’s theories have a wider implication of sexualities rather than purely the pleasure of having sex, however, I still found that his theories had been strongly implied directly on the Ads of commercial products which relate to eros.
Freud’s theories’ influences on the modern Ads and people’s attitudes toward sexualities.
The using of condom is an evidence shows the fact that eros for human meant more than reproductive activities but another way of making pleasure. Because the function of condom kills the potential reproduction. For the adults, sex had been considered as the most important basic drive in Freud’s theories. Or more accurately in this case, the pleasure gained from sexualities; because again, condom separates our basic drive of sex, which are the goals of reproducing ourself and the goals of generating pleasure during the process of making love. Within Freud’s contexts, condom for me could be seeing as an artificial creation resulted based on his idea of three structure of human mind -- Id, Superego and Ego. The Ego motivated us to create condom in terms of balancing the Superego and Id, as it is immoral that to let our libido drives us keep generating the sexual pleasure and cause a birth of an innocent child without being prepared as responsible parents. The moral from religion and society could be seeing as the setting of superego. So our ego side kind of making us wonder how we can have this pleasure without have the feeling of guilty. A centred crying Jesus in this poster shows that how superego is challenged by the solution come up from our ego side. As we can enjoy our sexualities without a moral punishment, even Jesus can’t do much because we feel way less guilty by using this product. This modern attitude of sexualities also illustrates the new relationship between people and religion, that religion as a form of superego (in a wider context) is challenging by the individualism which also means more awareness from the individuals’ Ego part of minds.
Libido and the pleasure of sex in our Id mind
Burning some serious calories “Libido in an individual is regarded as a closed energy system regulated by the physical law of conservation of energy, so what libido withdrawn from one area must inevitably produce effects elsewhere.” The poster above draw an attention of the important of satisfying our sex drive, something you shouldn’t really repress in your mind. It’s shows a photography which presents kind of semi-reality, which directly motivate viewer to conscious their desire. So they will consume the product and do what the models doing.
It referred the expectation of sexuality will offers us as well as the death instincts, works well with the name of the product “Play”, which emphasize the role of this product and reinforce the idea of getting pleasure, the enjoyment of having sex. Just like the innocent child who enjoys playing his toys. The designer had an awareness of the speciality of the end of the world, nothing could stop people having fun during sexual activities. A celebration of the end of the world, as a celebration of sex, purest celebration of our unconsciousness in our Id mind.
Showing the mouth is an effective way to attract people is another common implication of libido and Id. Although different products have different forms of application. This poster combine the idea of phallic worship and the sexual signal sent from the image of a female mouth.
Oral and Phallic implications or references
Use daily objects which share the similar physical form of the reproduction organs as a setting for those posters make things more fun and colourful. Moreover, they are so directional, which will make viewers conscious the unconscious part of our nature, the nonestopped sexual desire. Different ways of representation also could inspire the viewers as the way of gaining joys can be different and maybe even tasty. They are not suppose to tell what the desires or sexualities look like but more focused on visualising the excitement, the sensation part.
DUREX
Be a hero. Use a Du
This is a fake DUREX advertisement that I designed just for fun. This is not and will never be used in a commercial matter although it makes sense to me. I think my fake ad is strong enough to compare with any other DUREX ads, it has strong cultural references, sense of humour and the mythology of a true “hero”. This might be stupid
because people may argue that Mao wasn’t a hero at all. But who cares who is the hero when in this sexual contexts. The Chinese designers took advantages of the traditional paper cutting art form and used it as a promotion tool for the communism propaganda. Old day’s wises can become today’s jokes, it’s all about
how people were not being honest to the others, especially in the name of art. In the Chinese paper cutting art, things could be highly symbolic, like the sun in this case, it was symbolized and became almost just a circle. A circle is the most basic physical form so when we have the right contexts, a circle could be
anything, For the sake of DUREX, it is a condom, cuz there is a syntactical relationship between my copy writing and the person Mao.
urex.
It’s funny how everyone except Mao is holding a red book, which shows one’s honesty of a worship. I’m afraid that there is nothing can compare to those people’s love towards Mao. But what about the human instincts, consider the libido and the red power, which one is stronger? Under Maos rule, the population
of China rise up to 1 billion from half billion. As he said, quotes like “the more people the more power”; “nuclear weapons are nothing, we have a billion”, etc. Seems it’s not hard to understand how China can reproduced that much population. But later, the one child police shows that they know this was problematic.

The Hundred Days' Reform was a failed 104-day national cultural, political and educational reform movement from 11 June to 21 September 1898 in late Qing Dynasty China. It was undertaken by the young Guangxu Emperor and his reformminded supporters. The movement proved to be short-lived, ending in a coup d'ĂŠtat ("The Coup of 1898") by powerful conservative opponents led by Empress Dowager Cixi.
In 1900, China was heavily controlled by foreign nations who tended to dominate the ports such as Shanghai. China was ruled by the Manchu’s.
The Hsin-hai Revolution, also known as the Chinese Revolution, was a revolution that overthrew China's la imperial dynasty, the Qing Dynasty, and established the Republic of China.

The Chinese Civil War (1927–1950) was a civil war in China fought between forces loyal to the government of the Republic of China led by the Kuomintang (KMT) and forces of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The war began in April 1927, amidst the Northern Expedition, and essentially ended when major active battles ceased in 1950.
The war represented an ideological split (Left vs. Right) between the Communist CPC, and the KMT's brand of Nationalism.
The Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tian Anmen Square), during The May Fourth Movement around 1919. Students headed to the square to express their anti-imperialism, cultural, and political points of views. For me it was the starting point of Chinese cultural modernization including Art and Design. The rising of bourgeois class and educated generation were infiltrating the government and society at large, although no one would knew what would be happening as they always were.
1920s
The Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tian Anmen Square), during Chinese Cultural Revolution, around 1970s. Students headed to the square to meet Mao, in terms of showing their desire to keep the revolution going on. Cultural Revolution is another major revolution occurred in China 30 years after the funding of PRC. “The Revolution was launched in May 1966. Mao alleged that bourgeois elements were infiltrating the government and society at large, aiming to restore capitalism. He insisted that these “revisionists” be removed through violent class struggle.”

The Gate of Heavenly Peace, during Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. Students and citizens headed to the square, in terms of showing their desire to change the country into a more democratic nation. It was the largest demonstration among the few decades in China. Not far from China turned to a semimarketing based country. The movement had speared the whole country, although the government banned it till now after the armies took over the square.

Where democracy and new thoughts arrived to the public, people started to bring in new ideas include the communism.
After the communists took over the country, only one thoughts allows in the country. Things shifted.

The painting is very large, 448.3cm by 346.7 cm, its scale evoking the dominating nature of Mao’s rule over China. It also echoes the towering propagandistic representations that were being displayed throughout China during the Cultural Revolution. The graffiti-like splashes of color, red rouge and blue eye shadow, literally ‘de-faces’ Mao’s image - an act of rebellion against the Communist propaganda machine by using its own devices against itself.”
Design and art are the accessories of any revolutions, especially for China during the recent hundred years. New stuffs and thoughts changed the whole country, in terms of the industrialization of print making markets and the dramatic westernization/capitalization happened in the early 20 century. Design helped interlocutors to delivour their opinions and thoughts. Different Ideology, and social classe
This most recent piece of New Zealand advertisement involves a reflection of Chinese Cultural revolution. The company played an ambiguity of the word ‘power’. Basically, it has a direct reference of China’s 70s political performance. Also a reference of the most popular dance move last year from a Korean pop singer. The juxtaposition of two opposite cultures illustrates visually what is the meaning of DIFFERENT ATTITUDE. In the illustration of the performance, entities of labours students and armies are surrounding the flag with the company logo which originally was the logo of the communism party. So that the centred politic power transforms to purely a indicator of how good / strong the power company can be. This might not intentionally engages any point of view about classes, but the reference itself shows how working class surround and united by the communism power. To put it simply, the reference indirectly shows how well the power company can provide their service to different classes. On the other hand, the dancing move changes the attitude of Mao, even though he has the same old uniform and facial expressions. This up-to-date application of popular culture is another reference directly relates to the ATTITUDE of the company, it says that something always the same could be different. Literally, although other companies can have the same product (services), the things we can provide are just different. Anyway, apart from all the funny aspects of this advertisement, it is ironic for both sides in the same time, , a centred party flag brought Mao everything he wanted, what would being bring to the company by a centred company logo flag? Profits.
The art work (photography) of Marilyn as Mao by Fhillippe Halsman in 1952. In this image Marilyn was mimicking the face of Mao with her typical smile. This might just a creation of two professionals’ sense of humour, as what people did for their Facebook profile image nowadays. But I would say it is Art because the historical value it contains, the reflections of how different ideologies of capitalism and communism’s people constrain the opponent. Matter fact, it is always a fashion to do by mimicking someone you look down to for mocking proposes. Or even, just some purely displays of portraits in a ironic environment would make the points. Likewise the screen printings series of Mao that Andy Warhol produced, the commercial, and the icon of the ideology’s representation of communism can join at some points, which could be seen as the ideology of Political Art and design.
From my points of view, this is a strong piece of design within the contexts of power and attitude. It’s about how the pope tolerances and prays for the gay couple who are having a traditional Catholic style wedding. All sort of gay semiotics had been used here, like the purple and pinky colour, the spread daisies. Just think about it, how the Catholic Church controlled the Europe back in the days, the religion revolution was like the changing of people’s ideology, as the Marxism model shows the changes of ideology also changed the world. The gay marriage issue came to the surface of our society in 21st century. It’s all about the attitude towards this issue from the majority of people. It’s very interesting to see the processing of a changing ideology, about how different countries starts to legalize gay marriage, and also how this poster bring this issues for people to discuss.
Different ideologies are not just existing among different social classes but also different mind settings, are they?
It still surprised me when I saw the argument that people had made on the powershop’s discussion site. There are people who had made some serious critics, who felt this poster is very offensive, even anti-Catholic. They tried to judge what is right and wrong, but they ignored the fact that in this case only ideology matters. Gay marriage is not really about the GOD’s agreement or not, it’s about to make more people can be able to share the same rights from the law so every one can have a better equality. No one will care about how the GOD feels if they don’t believe in GOD. And about those who argued it’s antiCatholic, who cares really? This poster is not even intentionally talking about Catholic, the pope just symbolized the old ideology and its disagreement with gay marriage which primarily causes the unfairness among the modern law system and that’s all. Every weekend there are people on Queen st who tried to convert people to believe that the final judgement from their GOD will come to us. I’m not trying to say that they are annoying but I just wonder, if your GOD will judge us in one day, then why would you judge? Back to the powershop’s campaign, they keep releasing posters which are strongly controversial for people with different ideologies. Image if you argue with a North Korean people about what is democracy, it just the same sorts of arguments over and over again. But just remember, the full name of their country is the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, just like the People’s Republic of China, how can you argue with them? I strongly believe in that it’s important for us to argue but not judge,to argue and find out reasons for those previous and future decisions rather than bring one’s ideology upon the others and judge them based on the bloody world that you thinks you know. And of course, it is very funny and sometimes hilarious to take part in any of those arguments, to feel that the world is changing. Oh maybe not, maybe just my world is changing.
A Random North Korean soldier: You fuckers, are fucking idiots. Because you just don’t understand how good our leader is. If you take this reasoning then this Power company must be a bigot against Communism countries. Take it further you are a bigot against North Korea and China and any country who does not agree with your so-called democratic lifestyle. Your intolerance is very plain to see.

“What “Same Power, Different Attitude” means to us. Powershop has always supported the idea of individual choice and control. Our founding principle was to liberate New Zealanders from their enforced passivity as electricity consumers. Our brilliant customers have demonstrated that everyone’s happier when they can do things their way, so it’s not too much of a stretch to extend that philosophy to life in general. The latest version of Powershop’s longrunning campaign is intended to be both thought provoking and satirical. Kiwis have widely debated the issue of marriage equality over the last year, so we’ve used the issue to point out that large institutions can sometimes lose touch with their modern constituents. The power industry is dominated by crusty utilities, many of whom remain resistant to the changes happening in our world. We live in a world that has embraced freedom and equality. If something’s working for you and it’s not hurting anyone else, then we support your right to do it. We also believe it’s the responsibility of anybody in a position of power to consider whether their exercise of that power is bringing a greater or lesser happiness to the world. And we know that applies to us as much as anyone. Power to the people The Powershop Crew”
Everyone at Powershop has a little pink book on their desk, which is all about how Powershop is abnormal and bizarre, and sometimes criticised by the mainstream for unorthodox beliefs. About how we’ll always stand up to the bullies and fight the bad guys, because we believe you can’t be betterer without being different. Just like our posters, with Kim Jongil frying up a sausage at a school gala, and Saddam Hussein collecting money for Refugee Aid, the book is aptly titled “Same Power Different Attitude”.
What’s wrong with this power company’s designers? They are just trying to make you think differently.
Unless you want A land owner executed by the farmers, because the communists told them that’s the way to change others’ ideology and the old social structure.

Unless you want to face those tanks, when you realize that one day you will have to be different and think differently.

MYTHOLOGIES & COMMERCIAL STRATEGIES
A poetic Aisan wooden folding fan, with the myth of the secret land of the greatnesses where the ultimate destination for most of the greatest Chinese artists. Where might be garden inside a mountain area where grows vegetables for the special McDonald Asian Salad series.
Mythologies, promotions and conservations The social convention is something interesting to discuss, as the globalization provides a chance for us to think universally about the diversities that we have. Of course the commercial parts in any country are significantly occupied by the methodologies of advertisments. The tradition of advertising bring every new markets into echoes of mythological visual communications. For example, although the myth that McDonald uses in China would be different as the myth they uses in USA, the over all goals are still just purely about promoting and selling. For me, myths became rather tricky at this points. Because McDonald or Nike won’t care much about the culture itself of any tradition, that’s not their goals, they only care about which myth would recall their client to consume their products more often. And to be honest, this works most of the time visually, psychologically, culturally and eventually commercially. Culture and social conventions are the strongest thing which shaped people’s mind, because most people follow them naturally without arguing or being critical about it. Then we use myths, to be able to play tricks based on this fact. We confuse ourselves by the myths and realities. The commercial part of our society is taking over our life too much, the surrounding things which made up by myths make us even more blind and ignorant to believe in whatever the realities are not are not.
Bells and drums were musical instruments in ancient China. Later they were used by government and common people as timepieces. The Bell and Drum towers (top two images)were the center of Chinese chronology during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. They was built around 1272 while the Mongolians controlled China, as the tallest building in Beijing since then until the modernization era arrived China. Both of them continued to function as the official timepiece of China and government until 1924, when the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty was forced to leave the Forbidden City and western-style clockwork was made the official means of time-keeping.
The mythology of architecture always creates incredible sight for a country or culture. Like the forbidden city for China, the Ancient Parthenon temple for Greek, the Pyramid for Egypt, etc. They were all built in functional propose but on the other hand based on ancient mythologies. For now, it doesn’t matter if myth motivated people to build them or people wanted to created impressive public scene by building them, those artefacts’ existence are already part of myth for us (the modern people). For an average citizen in China, he/she definitely can’t afford any forms of traditional house in the city, where surround by the modern skyscrapers and malls. The government controls the land and determine based on their wish to demolish anywhere they want. All a sudden, the old looking China no longer exists instead of bunch of cold steels, the development is operating too fast without critical moderations. Even McDonald and Starbucks started to offer somewhere look very Chinese to the Chinese people in China. Is it good or bad? Does Chinese culture become that weak, so even fast food company starts to use China’s own myth to draw Chinese’ attention for their profits? Are they real parts of Chinese culture or just Chinese looking Americans, some content without understanding.
1980 is where China started to open its market to the other Countries, the period was also shifted almost every fields towards somewhere more open-minded. However, after the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, people rather to stay in the silences. At 1994, one of the pioneer of Chinese Rock musician He Yong published his first and least album called “the garbage dump”. In this album, he composed a song called “the bell and drum towers” which are the two iconic building in Beijing where now (since 2012) in front of one of the most unique McDonald shop in the world (as the image shows last page). He implicated the myth of the bell and drum tower as they are one of the observer through out Chinese history who can tell the truth. The song set up the argument by
questioning the “observer” who can tell the truth but cant being not stay in silence. Big argument but also reflections of citizens’ daily life, the myth of Beijing life style’s stillness reminds and contrasts with the dramatic changing outfits of the country. What does the garbage dump mean to our lifestyle? What does garbage dump mean to us? “Bell and Drum Towers are sucking that cloud of dust, Any of you could paint in their face.” He sang. Again, What about this ironic McDonald opened 8 years after his argument, and those old looking compounds which was demolished by the government? Should we enjoy the physical form of this old-mythical-architecture-stylelooking McDonald without asking who we really are?
THE BELL AND DRUM TOWERS (translated) My home is inside the Second Ring Road The people here have so much time They are talking about who had something happened and They are saying which brand of cigarette you took out Hard fellows from other town working in the small restaurant Their face just like mine Cycling marching the deciduous Watching the sunset fades Can’t see Xishan clearly on the Yinding Bridge anymore Water lotus’ leaves residue The reflection of the moon is negotiating with the streetlights About who will set up the fire to cook at tomorrow morning About tomorrow morning we will eat fritters biscuits Bell and Drum Towers are sucking that cloud of dust Any of you could paint in their face I can not hear your (Bell and Drum Towers) voice Now is too noisy too messy You’ve seen such a long time How can you not speak Who set the question this difficult Full of the correct answers Who set the question this difficult Full of the correct answers My home is inside the Second Ring Road My home is here at the Bell and Drum Tower My home is here inside of the compound My home my home my home is inside The upper edge of the Earth
The album cover of the garage bump
It becomes rather critical as the Chinese looking McDonald became one of the icons of China’s impression. In this case, its not due to either McDonald’s action of mimicking or its ambitious way of taking Chinese restaurant markets, but the facts of China’s ruthless losing and demolishing make the new icon of China ironic in depth. The commercial drives of McDonald never determines ruthless urbanization, but the bureaucratic capitalism spirit of the government disrespects the value of culture and Chinese philosophy. Therefore a very interesting contrast had been made by the icon of capitalism McDonald and the biggest communism government, as the foreign company desire to set its physical form looks rather Chinese, compare to the Chinese government, the action for their own profits (in China) sent them to opposite directions. The reason why both of them can either build or demolish the myth of Chinese architecture is that they are powerful than any of us. Different aspects of influences start from the upper-stairs and eventually condense to the normal citizen’s life. Once an ancient building is demolished, the story of the building will lose their physical form and become truly a myth. Once a new building has an old fashion looking, the level of expectation of new will change. However, who would really cares in the city though? The culture and philosophy will not be able to speak anyway, just like the drum and bell towers in front of the their new fellow from America.
It’s not about having a Chinese looking or not, its about the creation from the failure of keeping origins. From upper-stairs to the society and us. Of course it’s not revolutionary, it is failed so badly in this perspective.
Top Right: A series of Chinese dailyurbanization-portrait, or the instruction of Chinese GDP making methodology. The above images show how those buildings were demolished without having a chance to be aged above 20 years. This repeated action shows how Chinese government motivate the gross income of the whole nation but also shows an attitude that no one cares. Matter fact, no one would care much about those new buildings because they are meaningless, they were purely functional and they don’t have any myth for people to talk about.
ed SH LI O EM D Newest failure for the sake of promotion Xuanzang (602-664), a prestigious monk in the Tang Dynasty. HIn the third year (629) of the Zhenguan reign of the Tang Dynasty, he went westward from Chang'an City, the then capital of China, to India, after passing Xinjiang and Central Asia for the purpose of going on a pilgrimage for Buddhist Scriptures. He came back to Chang'an City in 645, and then began to translate Buddhist Scriptures in three temples including Daci'en Temple successively. After nineteen years, seventy-five Buddhist Scriptures were translated into Chinese. Also, he translated Laozi (a work of Laozi, the founder of Taoism) and Mahayana Shraddhotpada Shastra (Treatise on the Awaking of Faith in Mahayana) into Sanskrit, and introduced them into India. He wrote Report of the Regions West of Great Tang which, recording and narrating the situations of Central Asia, India, Nepal, and Pakistan, made important contributions to Sino-foreign cultural exchanges. Local officials want to demolish nearly two-thirds of an ancient Buddhist temple in Xi’an to gain UNESCOapproval for the site. “Some buildings will be demolished because it would make the environment more elegant,” Zhang Ning, chief of Changan District’s Ethnic and Religious Affairs Burea. Local monks are now understandably frustrated that their homes may be demolished by local authorities who apparently don’t have the slightest understanding of conservation.
In this town, there are aroun 50 historical buildings disappear annually, either because of the lack of the needed maintenance or due to the commercial drives. Within this speed, all of thos buildings will be gone after 260 years. "These historical buildings are the essence of traditional Chinese architecture and I think it's such a waste if they're not displayed for people to appreciate."

Recently, one of the most famous Chinese superstar Jacky Chen announced that he will donate 6 of his historical Chinese building to a university at Singapore. His decision caused considerable criticisms and arguments about whether it’s reasonable of it’s rude to the country. But he said the reason that he doesn’t want to donate them to Chinese people because the way how Singaporeans treat and respect those buildings are seriously impressive. Either HK government, Chinese government or those businessmen are bit scheming to make Jacky Chen to trust.. “I’ve had many long discussions with government officials about allocating land and where to put the buildings. But after several years of discussions, and for whatever the reasons may be, we still haven’t come up with any results.” Chan said that Singapore officials were quick to take him up on his offer of the first four buildings, and that he had been impressed by their attempts to preseve and reconstruct the antiques. “During a recent trip to Singapore, I visited the Singapore University of Technology and Design to see the progress of the old buildings I donated,” he said. “I felt so grateful after hearing about all the hard work they’ve put into these historical buildings.”
Most of the existing historical Chinese buildings are not at the city, because most of those which once existed at the city were gone already. The truth is most of the existing historical Chinese buildings are dying. Because they are not cash money, ain’t they? Does China need to create more myths by destroying the existences?
Yes, we might need to, cuz McDo China was looked like anyway. Ju minded people how wonderful th The representation of milk might be a cow, so lets shake a cow. We have our child girls, cow, grassland, forest, white clouds and the blue sky all together. There is no way to not loving such innocent feeling. This lovely scene created by the myth of farmland and childhood. Not even close to the biggest fastfood company.
onald can always remind us how ust like the way McDonald reheir childhood were. The representation of Chinese cultural might be a Chinese looking McDonald, so lets eat a BigMac right now at the Big Beijing City.
Art & design, the significations of reality and "A great city has been demolished. But what is done is done, and cannot be undone. We can only recall its old flavour, its feeling." Recently, foreign graffiti artist Vhils and his team came to Shanghai. With portraits of ordinary homeowners as their template, they drew giant portraits on the exterior walls of houses on the eve of their demolition. Vhils’ artwork has appeared at M50, Red Town, 188 Pingliang Road, and Xiao Nanmen. What is quite special is that he uses a hammer, chisel, and power drill to engrave onto the surface of the wall, the process of creation completed through destruction. This photography artwork illustrate the crucial reality by rearranging the reality of demolishment itself. By not even adding one unacceptable object. Such a modern family photo to look at. As easy as just following the one-third rule of design, as tragic as what the realities are. It looks so different compare to the fresh new but old Chinese fashion looking McDonald, but before that McDonald settle down, would the demolished compounds’ landscape sight looked just like this?
For Vhils, carve Xuanzang’s face on the ruined temple wall will becomes the next level of street art, Xuanzang will be proud of you.

"Demolition" “Bolin was born in 1973 in Shandong Province, where he completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Shandong Arts Institute. He moved to Beijing in 1999 to study sculpture with Sui Jiangou at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, where he received a Master of Fine Arts in 2005.” “During Bolin's final year at the Academy, the Chinese government ordered the demolition of the Beijing International Art Camp, also known as Suo-
"Keep the Advancement of the Party" jiacun Artists' Village, which housed several studios, including Liu Bolin’s. In response to the demolition, Curator Zhang Zhaohui organized the exhibition "Demolish! Demolish! Demolish!" which included over 100 artists.” “Bolin’s contribution to the exhibition, "Hidden Demolition," featured his body painted to blend in with the rubble. It was the first of many unique camouflage images.”
Bolin, If I am you, I will definitely do the Chinese looking McDonald and melt with the portrait of Xuanzang where sits inside the Xingjiao Temple.

In the album ‘The Capital ‘s cover, artists illustrate the juxtaposition of different communism icons. The myth of communism identity become the
A western knife and folk on top of a pair of chopsticks, A sun sitting inside a dark bow. Everything is surrounding by the Chinese red or you can say the communism red. No one can escape the most basic consumption, the consumption of food. It keeps modern life survives. The way that Chinese eat had been historically constructed, it never changes during the past few thousand years. But for now, everything seems different although we still eat with chopsticks. We eat and survive, then we consume some more other stuffs. A butterfly could change the globe weather, what a little bit changes on the most basic part of our life could do? Only the thing that constantly stays the same could tell. The Chinese soul or the westernized soul? I’m pretty sure that the soul of the sun is better.
HOW TO FEEL ??
I always feel that be able to read (literally and visually) doesn’t means being able to understand in this complicated world. The meanings are contextualized in one or another way in terms of the goal of any propose of communications. Especially the contemporary design and Art, after the post-modernism thoughts that the whole world had been involved in. The way we denote and the way we read changed dramatically. On the other hand, industrialisation and the progress of mass production redefined our life so much in the recent centaury. Individual values are faded and hidden somehow that the majority of us lose the sense of independent feeling really. Like what the Marxism term the “social superstructure defines, the major ideology not only determines the stereotype of a normal person but also determines what is the normal feeling or reaction that a normal person should have. Does normal means good and natural? Is a consistent normal guy a good guy? If it is arguable, then should we argue the legibility of the socially constructed feeling (a normal feeling or reaction to particular cases)? The best way to prevent smoking harm is to quit smoking. But the best way to prevent murdering is neither to kill every murders or tell people that murder is bad. The reason people get addicted to Tobacco is because the chemical it contains affect the brain, the reason why people kills others because their brain tells their hands to grab a knife and stab. The society became this kind of tobacco and determines the need for a murderer to kill someone. The society reconstructs ourselves, literally everyone of us include the murderers. Killing is so natural for wild animals but not for a person live in a modern society. But the society made people turns to solve problems by the wildest way. How they feel? How we feel? How the victims feel?
The tradition The modern life The stress The money system The politics The cultures The economics The educations The etc. This is an image of Ai’s project that used 100 million hand made clay sunflower seeds. In the first stage, like else exhibitions, it allows watch only. But later on, they allowed visiter to physically engage with the whole thing.
This is another thing that i want to show because again, this art work implies universallu although the signifier here is so common and small. It’s interesting to see how an simplest thing that can lead people to different perceptions of life.
This is a digital version of a photography series that Ai Weiwei did in the 90s, this is really familiar for me, as it was one of the earliest contemporary Chinese art piece that I know. But what does it mean to me changes every year. Since I read more and learn, the connotation of the art work changes. Last year, I referred it to my assignment as an reference to represent new Chinese new artists’ desire to change the way how our society think. Again, I collected this art work. Like the stillness of his face tells, things are never that literal, the dynamic of a dropping vase might not just a representation of a generation’s action and wills, but seems more narrative. But what the narrative tells, its whatsoever to the cultural influences depends on the contexts that we see, vice versa. What’s the narrative of China’s recent 70 years? It is a story of how a country which was so rich at cultural but not that rich anymore after series of wars revolutions and political movements. No one could count how many cultural resources had been damaged or even destroyed during the 10 years cultural revolution. And now, what could be the narrative of a dropping 2000 years old vase?
A pottery vase, produced around Han dynasty, 1st century BC - 1st century AD, China Have to say that it is an amazingly crafted vase made 2000 years ago, be seen as cultural heritage for nowadays people, but must be made for the royalty to show off back in the days.
The top image of a vase which is important becuase it is a statement of Chinese cultural heritage, either the past 2000 years brings lots values to the vase or the lost of the techniques to make it. It stands out in its natural physical form as a beautiful vase for displaying and it is such a beautiful vase for displaying. However, a vase becomes different in Ai’s artwork on the top left, the vase itself should be seen not only an vase but more of a cultural sign because it’s not a vase that functions as a normal vase, it refers to something other than itself, although the people who made it at 2000 years ago wanted it to function rather than the new age representations. It doesn’t matter how beautiful the vase is, because any vase that old enough can make Ai’s point in this case. After all, his goal is only about of showing us a Coca Cola identity on top of a whatever Chinese thing that is ultra old. So we can connote those denaturalized objects with our own experiences in real life.
I chose to collect some of Ai weiwei’s artworks and projects because he provides me a chance to have an unusual signification about usual things. He always use the normal objects as the signifier, to make the viewers receive the signified, massages or questions about our everyday life. His way of denaturalizing always set up the question for everybody, sometimes almost like an repeated question which keeps asking that how much we know about the reality, and how real our feelings are as socially constructed people.

This images shows what a modern sunflower seed warehouse like, way more than 100 million real sunflower seeds are reading to be manufactured into several different food products. Not much urban people would notice how a real mass food production steam line looks like. But as one of the solid reality that shapes our life. There is no way for a modern people to live without this machinized cold world.

Races and stereotypes
Left: This image took by Italian photographer Daniele Tamagni shows three Botswana heavy metal youth. They have created their own style, inspired by classic metal symbolism, but also borrowing heavily from the iconography of western films and the traditional rural world of Botswana. “We like to get dressed,, drink meet friends and feel free , this music is so powerful . We are lucky to live in a country tolerant and open argues one of the leaders. A precious rarity for Africa.
What are we, when we beneath another animal? What are we, when we beneath another skin colour? Another animal or another person?
What’s Different?
Michael Jackson is the one that I think of, when I came to the racial issues. The misery that he suffered is unimaginable for me, it is about being a man that unchangeable physical unnatural. Based on the stereotype that I have about a black man, he must was a typical talented black musician. Because the stereotype that i have told me that only black people sign the best song, only black people dance the best moves. Opened my Ipod, flick through all the music
from the 50s to 70s, almost every legendary song has a black singer. I felt that all music has a black background, because almost every modern music form that we love to hear came from the Blue and Jazz back in the days. The skin colour makes us too easy to differentiate races. So stupid people think that the colour really matters to make loads of differences between black and white, because the distance between developed and undeveloped are so obvious.
The real African heavy metal Crew
Why Different?
I found those photos in the newest Sony photography award 2013. I wondered what makes them special enough to won the prize, as in developed country heavy mental dude is not that special really. It surprised almost every one of my friends who have seen it, not because of the fact that they are black, but because the fact they are real African people in the middle of the Africa continent. Some of them said, they thought they are American as they have sort of American looking. The reason why an African nationality is unexpected explains how people differentiate others by their visual identity, or so called the denotation. This level of reading is too literal to let the connotation happens, unless people have been told so they start to connote whatever political or historical issues underneath the facts. The right bottom image shows a white guy as well as two black guy. Three of them formed a mental music band. It’s a great example of how the people who wear the same kind of cloth, do the same thing and probably think in the same why, but visually they just look so different.
If I ask one to differentiate the top two photos of Arnold Schwarzenegger, probably everyone will get full marks. We can differentiate politician and movie character just by the dressing style and our knowledge of the world. There is no external meaning behind those two scenes within this contexts, because we all can get it without even thinking of the stereotypes. But it’s hard for people to differentiate the African mental crew with the American mental crew especially a white african mental dude and a white american mental dude. One may argue that this sort of differentiaration is meaningless and useless. I agree, but why some people just feel different when this sort of differentiaration comes to people who have different race?
The soft drink brand Mountain Crew had a pretty bad experiences at last mouth as people pointed that they just made the most racism advertisement ever. This is really ironic because the creator of this advertisement is a black people, and all the actors here are his friends and also musicians in the collective called the “Wolf Gang”. He called himself “Tyler the creator”, and as he said, this advertisement is not trying to present the stereotype of how people thinks all the criminals are black people but to push the boundary of this stereotype. “It was never Tyler’s intention to offend however, offense is personal and valid to anyone who is offended. Out of respect to those that were offended and the ad was taken down,” read the statement posted on Tyler’s Tumblr. “For those who know and respect Tyler he is known for pushing boundaries and challenging stereotypes thru humour. This is someone who grew up on David Chappelle. This situation is layered with context and is a discussion that Tyler would love to address in the right forum as he does have a point of view.”“As someone who
hasn’t had the experience of being discriminated against I choose to respect the opinion of those who have… what I can speak to is Tyler who represents much more than the current narrative this story suggests. “Contrary to what many may discern from this Tyler is the embodiment of not judging others, his delivery may not be for everyone (which is true for anyone who pushes boundaries) but his voice is nonetheless important to the conversation since his demographic understands what he ultimately stands for and sees the irony of it all.” It’s ironic that how white people think it’s racism but its black creator doesn’t, go back to 50 years ago, this is definitely racism because back in the days not much black people can’t make advertisement. However, todays world is way more opened and complicated, black people had gained their rights to be take part in the mass media industry, so should people still keep their literal way of reading or take things more deeply and really dig that exact thought that black people tired to delivery to us?
YES or No?
YES
?
Not only different races faces the stereotype problems, sometime is for any particular country and its people. Like this beer advertisement. It’s a joke that a New Zealand owned beer brand made on Kiwis, and I believe most of New Zealanders can take this joke easily and they will be proud of the fact that they can make joke about themselves, that also become a stereotype about Kiwis for me, it proves that it’s possible sometimes stereotype can be good or not bad. How far one can goes really depends on how hard one can handles, so the bad things can turn to positive things. Like most hip-pop lyrics shows, American black people call themselves nigga, and seems they are pretty proud of being a nigga, I like the word nigga, cuz sometimes I wish i could be a nigga too.
I’ve put yes and the question mark on top of this illustration. This significantly changes of the context but I would argue that overall the connotation of this art work will stays the same. It is only about to use literal or ironic way of saying. However, yes and not are just oppositions which sit against each other. Different contexts changes the way of connoting. For the original, the tattooed tiger with his middle fingers up which just like a typical American gangster. Not for sale at this case is just a straight way of saying that this’s the line here, I’m not for sale or I will fuck you up. What about yes? Which is true as the wild animal trading is one of the biggest international crime in the world. The tiger itself is definitely not the criminal but at here, if you say yes then a imaginary tiger gangster will fuck you up as well cuz what’s the other way for a tiger? They kill others to survive!
What d call a soph Black From nigger to nigga, then to the American black, it’s all about different name of a particular group of people who have a black skin colour. It’s like our stereotype changed from subjective to objective. We call African people black people nowadays may not means that we are racists but
matter fact, they are black, look black is one of their natural features. And logically, no thing wrong with being black. We love black, which is also the most proud colour for Kiwis, as NZ rugby team has a name called “the All Blacks”, which consists by various races, mainly white and
Pacific people. I don’t think Pacific people would even think call them “All Black” is racism from any perspective, although they looks more black than Europeans and Asians.
A NIG
do you histicated man?
GGA.
It can be all about brotherhood and the friendship, be called nigga by someone familia means the relationship between two individual is strong. And it sounds cool as well, because that’s also what real black people use as a word for the commonness of their origin. However,
it’s rude to call a black man nigga because for a real nigga, only a true nigga can call them nigga. That’s something always exists in the world, just like American Europeans people can’t call himself a Chinese, but an American Chinese can because it’s all about one’s commonness
of the origins. Only Chinese can deeply know how much their country and culture suffered because they care, just like only a true nigga can tell what’s the real racism is, also what is not. We should listen to them more often, that’s the only way to respect different races on earth.

way how we are so different. This could be real because all the stereotypes was part of the reality too. And what will be improved is that we will push the boundaries of those stereotypes, so we will push ourselves further and further. Until one day that you find in China, people are not only good at mathematics or salving puzzles, they can be creative just like their ancestors; and you will find that black people will not only good at sports but also academically talented. Because when the time past by, the old stereotypes will still stays the same, there will be only two options for us as well, change or stay the same just like what old stereotypes do. Apart from all the previous bullshiting I’ve made, what really true is that, the stereotype doesn’t speak on itself, we speak.

Gender Politics and social reconstructions
MUMMY’S FIRST MUM “GENDERIFICATION” seems
This is such a hilarious product that I found on the Internet. I even counts the words on its cover, there are 11 words on the cover, and more than half (6) of them are either BABY or PREGNANT, Maybe I’m too poor at English so I just can’t find a word to describe the whole thing, let it be the “genderification”, which in my concern is about the process or the possibility that how mass production reconstructs ourselves since our childhood. Pink for the girls are too common to be mentioned but this time, titis and pregnancy took things far more “advanced” in terms of females speciality at nursing and regenerating. I have to agree that those toys are sort of educational, however I don’t think this is appealing because it is just weird for me as a toy. I remember my father bought me a toy car because he thought a toy car will motivate me a lot so I can have a better mark in the final exams, The reason why he thought it has to be a car is probably because in the gender stereotypes, a car is always tend to be more attractive for boys than a doll. It made sense because by that motivation I did get excited and tried bit more on studying. To be honest, I am bit judgemental at this toy but I really want to argue that will a girl love this pregnant baby and the pregnant-pregant baby. As a boy and possibly a father in the future, I’m pretty sure this will not be the right toy that I will buy for my Children.
MMY legit
And here this girl seems pretty pissed by the fact that all the girls’ stuffs are pinky princesses, but in this video, she was just keep complaining and questioning because she can’t tells the true answers just like me. Why? I can’t tell why the majority of girls’ loves pinky toy but here we do have a lovely girl pissed by this fact, so why don’t we just say that pink for girls is not that true? This is really a fish and water question, but what else I know is, almost every North Korean loves their leader Kim Jung-Un but none of us would faithfully say that we love him, why is that?
HOWEVER THE FEMINISM COLOUR IS DEFINATELY NOT PINK!
There are way too much jokes had been made in gender topics. Jokes based on true stories always makes people have a good laugh. So we say hahaha this is so true! Like the one I’ve found on 9 gag on the top left. It has been scientifically argued that the evolution of the unique size and shape of female human’s beast is basically just for attracting male human. Chimpanzees have the same way of breast-feeding, but their breast only show up as a container when they get pregnant, which is very different compares to human females’, whose breasts always the same once female get matured enough to go through the whole process of regenerating. This means that all the advertisement of bras and sexual products which strongly focused on female breast is natural reaction of ourselves. And the evolution of females’ breasts directly indicates how will those ads operates. It’s about how to make them looks even better. Bra, for example is a modern product that which almost only serves the attractive function of female breasts because the goal of wearing bra is to make them looks better as well as to keep the shape of it looks young and stable. It also hide females’ “beauty”. after ages of social reconstruction of the bra, now we may all think that female breast with a suitable bra is what sexy means. However, after all the breast are still more important than everything. Take a look at the BMW advertisement that I collected. It doesn’t even have a car, there is only a bra and pair of breasts with a lock on it. It seems too materialised ,nevertheless, a modern women still have to wear the bra, that’s why we can have a laugh at the top image.
Almost all the bra advertisements are based on this fact that female may feel very uncomfortable wearing bra. So the strategy became very clear here, it’s all about to make one to believe that the particular product is designed to make you comfortable, meanwhile the pretty model is telling you that “wear this bra, be a queen.” The bottom pear one is pretty unique, but it is very clear that it’s all about the social construction that I mentioned. Because it tells what is not all right and implies what a breast should be. Again, the copy writing here is even trickier, it says a girl rather than a woman, with an image of a female who doesn’t really looks like a girl. We all know, youth could be one of the valuable thing for female, what about the youth of the shape of a female’s breasts?
LIFE IS HARD FOR A FEMALE, LOOK AT THOSE EFFORTS THAT THEY PUT IN, LOOK, THEY EVEN HAVE THE “BEAUTY SMILE TRAINER” TOO. NOW I JUST REALIZED HOW HARD THE COMPETITION IS GONNA BE BETWEEN ME AND ANOTHER MALES FOR A WELL SOCIALLY RECONSTRUCTED FEMALE. THIS IS WAY TOO HARD !!!!!!!!!!!! :(((((((((((((((
What defines the perfection of a female? From a man’s perspective or a woman’s? I guess it really depends on the level of the society. I can’t argue with the African tribal man that this woman who is wearing a bra looks way better than their woman who doesn’t. The definition of a woman is just so different in different forms of society. We can’t understand some particular culture’s athletics because we are reconstructed differently within different definitions of terms. But what is important is that, the result of any social construction defines what we are, and why we are. Always, we under-estimate the crisis underneath those social constructions. Things can goes wrong, like literally, really, really wrong. I’ve find a site called “my-firstbra,net”, it seems like this company is trying to sell bra for children in the name of fashion and woman beauty, the site was too sensitive and susceptive for me so I decided not to put it in the dairy, but whatever tells me is that adults as already reconstructed beings sometimes influences children way more than we normally would image.
Rhetoric Perceptions and reallitys
Every people know this work if they know art. However, it was very conceptual at that period for the majorities, because of the denial statement it has, which was about how an artist’s notion challenged people’s knowledge of painting as an art form. But once people had got this concept or I can call it a new way of reading art, they started looking at things differently, based on another level of perspective.
In this poster, lots of Rhetorics had been made. The signifiers of rain, a broken batman mask and also the title “the dark knight rises”. It implies the possible plots for people to think of. This is not a batman, but it represent him, a broken dark knight. Literally, there must be some serious punches on the face and secondly he must be missing at somewhere else as there is not even a shadow of the bat man appears. Sometimes rain could be a good thing, but this time, rain or those water drops are more
like powerful extinguisher, which I would say extinguished the inner fire of the batman. So from those content in the poster, people could possibly tell that this might be related to the word which is on the contrary -- hope. There must be a downfall so a rise can come after, hope is the thing that could make this happens. Actually, this was what I thought when I first saw the poster before the movie released. To be honest, the whole bat man movie for me is a giant piece of metaphors.
Here we go, the newest coming superhero movie. This is the one that I chose from many of the others from the series, as it is the most typical example of how metaphors had been used in movies posters. Look at this carefully, it is a superman who came from the other part of the universe now locked by a man made handcuffs. Seems like our superman needs a bit social reconstructions. Anyway, I don’t believe that this is because of the director is too stupid or what, this is definitely part of a well designed plot. Look at those soldiers behind him at this time, they seems pretty scared and way tinier than the hero. They are the State apparatus in our social structure, but this time they seems really faded and less important, although the superman is in charged by them. For those soldiers don’t even have much colours, which sits on the contrary of our hero, who is still having the typical superman blue and red signs. The weirdly bright light behind him which also hits him right on the back, this is not by coincidence but by the rhetoric. Which would possibly represents the next moment, a serious explosion or again, what we called, the hope. Seems all the others really need bit more light so they can have hope as well though. They repeatedly use the back bright light as a tool to rhetoric. In this poster, only two major contents include the weird light. Of course the other major content is the superman. It’s really worth arguing what does the light tells, is it all about hope again or is it just the sun? I don’t think this is gonna be an explosion this time, cuz no one would stands like this behind a massive explosion, not even the superman. No, the superman who will be locked by a pair of man made handcuffs.
This is an extreme example of using rhetoric. It used the most crucial violence scenes to describe Jesus last 12 hours in his human form. The director chose to make it seems exactly almost unbelievably real of recovering the old punishments. The myth (or the truth story for religious people) turned out pretty stuffed and therefore real through its violent rhetoric strategy. It doesn’t even need any indirect metaphor because you don’t really need to use metaphor to make something seems to be real, you can just make it looks real. Not only just to make it looks real, Mal Gibson tried so hard to even make it sounds so real. All the languages used here are Latin and Jewish’s dialect with English subtitles. From this point of view, he really took the idea of rhetoric into the next level. Same for the movie Apocalypto, the only different between those to I think it’s probably their genre, that Apocalypto is an action movie although it’s pretty historical.
For me, the lovely bones is the movie that sits on the opposite of those Mal Gibson had made. Tones of metaphors, beautiful rhetorics and implications here. However, this movie scared me off far more than what Gibson’s movies did. It is very dreamy, the whole thing is almost like a decorative Freudian psychological analysis of the dead girl. Very strange and weird combinations of scenes and massive random objects keep appearing through out the whole movie. The smart thing is that all those metaphors and rhetorics are actually working and helping viewer to understand the story line as well as to have a chance take part in the after murdered experiences.
