New school sees environmentally friendly changes BY LINA HOBLOS

A number of new proposals involve the new school’s approach to becoming environmentally friendly. Innovative products and systems will be provided in hopes of conserving energy. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or the LEED, sets standards for “green” initiatives across the nation. There are four levels. This project is required by the Ohio School Facilities Commission to work towards a silver designation. Wadsworth School System projects this project to a gold facility; one level higher. Under this new system, there will be a reduction of water by a minimum of 20%.

It will also direct up to 75% of construction waste management from disposal facilities. A feature of this plan involves the new geo-thermal system for heating and cooling. It will have two components including a well field and operating system within the school. The well field portion of the system will be located under the designated track and softball fields. and has continuous piping throughout the building. They have the benefit of the earth’s natural heating and cooling abilities to cool or heat the liquid for the heating and cooling systems. Another aspect of this plan is eco-friendly exit signs. These signs will use natural light to

illuminate the exit signs and in return save money on electricity. Lighting and motion sensors will be placed throughout the building, such as classrooms and corridors, to reduce or increase the lighting levels within a particular area. The lights will shut off or dim based on the amount of light in the room. If a room was unoccupied and the lights were left on, the sensor will shut off the lights automatically. There will also be thermal sensors that will assist with heating and cooling. The sensor will adjust the system to account for daylight which affects the heating and cooling needed within each room. The carpet flooring will be made of partially recycled material and

will increase comfort level for students. Many students have different opinions on these new changes. Some student’s reactions are positive towards the changes. “Wadsworth High School is already awesome, so if the new school is becoming environmentally friendly, it will make Wadsworth five times cooler,” said senior Shannon Howard. Other students are not as optimistic about the changes. “I think we have bigger issues to worry about rather than going green,” said senior Craig Gaston. The school system hopes this new plan will save money and positively affect the students and the community.

Schedule changes become reality BY MARISSA HOFFMAN

In order to accommodate the large amounts of construction that needs to be accomplished, the school calenders for the next several years will have a whole new look. The most immediate changes are not going to be as major as the long term changes. Starting next year, teacher work days will be rearranged, but almost none of the changes will affect the student calendar. The major changes are not scheduled to take place beginning 2011 through 2013. The 2012 school year is not scheduled to start until Sept. 6. New calenders are available on

the school web site. The longer summer break is going to be utilized for wrapping up construction. In an interview, Principal Jerry Parsons listed goals for the summer. They included finishing construction, wrapping up unfinished work, cleaning up the building, taking care of the old school and finishing parking lots. The summer break will be extended; the extra days will be cut from long weekends and extended breaks then moved to the summer. The current underclassmen and middle school students will be affected by the changes. Some other differences will

affect the student body other than the calendar changes. Summer school classes will be at new times that are yet to be decided. The loss of Steiners’ facilities and the track will also affect the summer school location and schedule. Graduation dates have been moved around to accommodate for these changes. The current date for the class of 2011 graduation is May 22. The safety of all workers, students and staff involved with the high school is the highest concern. The purpose of the schedule change is to allow the construction workers to have control of the property while there is no one in the building. “1,600 kids, 500 workers, and

construction trucks do not mix. Our concern is getting the job finished in a timely manner while maintaining a safe environment for all involved,” said Parsons. Students will have to accommodate for the changes and adapt to the new school year. “I feel that having less days off during the school year will be annoying, but it’s necessary,” said senior Jess Beheydt. Although upperclassmen will not be affected by the changes, many of the underclassmen will have to adapt with the differences. Schedule changes will be in effect until the construction has been completed. The new schedule will begin in 2011.

Principal’s Message

During the months of February and March, communities, service organizations, and schools across the United States are celebrating diversity and awareness through Black History Month and Women’s History Month. Diversity celebrations occur monthly all year long to some extent. At WHS one may learn about the plight that minorities have traveled in our country through history lessons in social studies classes, or perhaps in the literature in English classes. As WHS students transition from a school and community that is predominately one race, it is important to grasp understandings and viewpoints that may be different than your own. No matter what path you choose to take after high school, being able to work and function successfully in a global society is paramount. Respectfully integrating with people who are of a different race, religion, creed, gender, or nationality is a challenge that our country and many nations worldwide continue to experience. It is my hope that each of us at WHS does our part to treat each other with respect and dignity on a daily basis, and take forth our positive learning experience to make life better for all. Take a moment to get to know someone who is “different” from you. By listening closely, you may be surprised what you learn, and how much more enriched your life will be. The question from my desk becomes, “What more can we do at WHS to assist our students in the area of cultural diversity?” Beyond the classroom, “Should one of our student organizations take ownership and develop lessons to teach our student body about minority awareness?” “Do we fully understand words, phrases, comments, or non-verbals that inflict pain on others?” As I review items to address for school improvement during my first year of tenure as principal, I am open to your positive suggestions on the direction we proceed. “If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.” John F. Kennedy March will soon be here! At WHS and all high schools across Ohio, March means that our sophomores will take the Ohio Graduation Test March 15 –19, our school will operate on a different schedule. A letter is being prepared to send to parents and students with the final details. We are . . . Wadsworth! Mr. Parsons

Toyota recalls accelerator on nine models BY JOE VARGO

This January, Toyota announced that it had halted sales and production of eight of its top selling models due to faulty accelerators. The pedals could possibly stick, causing the car to accelerate beyond the driver’s control. All of the affected models were said to have been recalled. In early February, reports emerged that a ninth model also was experiencing problems. The popular Hybrid Prius had its own safety concerns: a possible faulty braking system. The Prius has now been recalled. Understandably, this news has many drivers worried. Questions about Toyota’s brand reliability have the automotive companies concerned as well. Even if one owns an affected vehicles, the chances of

experiencing a sticky accelerator are quite small. Still, it is worth taking seriously. If one’s car starts to accelerate uncontrollably, apply steady pressure to the brakes and put the car into neutral. The car should not be driven again until it is fixed. Also, Toyota can be reached at 1-800-331-4331. It is tough to predict what will happen to Toyota in the near future. The brand’s reputation has taken a significant hit, but other car makers such as GM have had massive recalls of this magnitude and made come backs. Some analysts think Toyota may lose sales in the near term. This recall could mean price decreases on the affected models when production resumes. The latest Toyota Deals give a good idea of the discounts available on a new Toyota. Only time will tell how big of a hit Toyota will take.

Mexican drug wars cause death among many BY KAYLEIGH MILLER

On Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, in the Northern border city of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, 13 college and high school students were killed. Witnesses believe that the attack was prompted by false information. Since Saturday January 30, 24 people have been killed in Mexico by powerful drug dealers. Thirteen of the 24 were killed at a high school party early Sunday morning. Reports say shooters had received reports that members of a rival trafficking group were in attendance. Authorities in Ciudad Juarez said that they have no idea what motivated the weekend shooting attack against a group of young party attenders. Jose Dolores Arroyo Chavarria, a suspect in the crime, said he acted as a look out for the gun

men who attacked the party. The gun men were ordered to kill everyone inside. “It must have been a huge mistake,” said Martha Lujan, when interviewed by the Huffington Post. Lujan lives in the housing complex, in which the shooting took place. The group of teenagers gathered to watch a boxing match when a van pulled up and opened fire. Ten people were killed at the scene of the crime and three more died at the hospital. When police arrived at the house, bodies were scattered everywhere. Ciudad Juarez is home to 1.3 million people and several huge drug bosses. The bosses battle on the turf causing problems everywhere, but thousands of troops and federal police have tried to stop them. Last year more than 2,250 people were killed and

15,000 people in the past three years have been killed due to this problem alone. At the height of the violence, around Easter 2009, bodies were being found every morning, at a rate of almost 12 a week. The state government has not been able to handle this amount of

organized crime, which is why the mayor and the governor of Ciudad Juárez, José Reyes Ferriz, has asked the federal government to get involved. If people do not start taking actions to stop drug trafficking, more deaths will occur.

E DITORIAL Olympians set gold standard

EDITORIAL

It is the best of the best, a gathering of greats. The Winter Olympics are the chance for many to achieve their dreams and show off all they have accomplished. We at The Bruin believe a lot can be learned from the Olympians beyond the incredible displays of talent. It is no secret that athletes with aspirations to win gold have to be dedicated and hard working, both of which are important characteristics to possess. However, the quality that Olympians have that few others do is passion. It takes passion to train for years to compete in an event that can last a matter of seconds. It takes passion to make the sacrifices required to compete at the Olympic level. There are 16, 17, 18 year old athletes already making their names known by shining at the Olympics. Instead of being typical high school students focused on dating and parties,

February 2010

THE BRUIN these teenagers make training and improving themselves their top priority. By the time this year’s seniors are graduating college, many of these teen stars could be retiring from an extremely successful career. By the time these student’s lives are just beginning, these athletes could have already reached every goal they set for themselves. Our point is not to go out and start training to be an Olympic athlete. Instead, find something you are passionate about. Find something that you would be willing to dedicate your life to. These young athletes were privileged to find their passion so early in life. While it may take others years to find what makes them happy, your’s could be right around the corner. Whether it is snowboarding or scrapbooking, you will never know until you try. Yes, it is cliché, but if you start looking for your passion today, maybe one day you can experience the same joy gold medalists Lindsey VoNn and Shaun White are experiencing.

THE BREWIN’ DEBATE Will LeBron leave Cleveland? YES

NO

BY JOEL HLAVATY

BY HAYDEN KILBRIDE

When LeBron James takes the floor, it does not take long for the audience to see that he is playing on a much higher level than the players around him at Quicken Loans Arena. Thanks to LeBron, a team like the Cleveland Cavaliers, that was once doomed to mediocrity, along with every other team bearing the Cleveland name, now has an extremely high chance at winning an NBA Championship. This is exactly why he is going to leave. If LeBron experiences this much success with a team like the Cavaliers, think of the potential he could bring to other teams that are performing even better. Cities like New York that LeBron has been seen supporting as a fan would be more than happy to offer him gratuitous amounts of money in return for delivering their own NBA teams to fame and stardom. What it all is going to come down to is whether or not Cleveland is prepared to compete with teams all across the country to hold on to the chosen one.

LeBron James is the most identifiable athlete in the world, and plays in Cleveland, Ohio. Why would he want to leave a city that is close to his hometown if it would not benefit him very much? He is already making $90 million off the court with Nike and makes another $20 million a year with the Cavs. So clearly this is a guy that does not need to leave for financial reasons. So why is everyone talking about LeBron leaving Cleveland when it wouldn’t benefit him in any way? The whole state of Ohio would turn against him if he ever left the state. So if LeBron decided to leave I cannot see a reason why. It would hurt him financially and would also hurt his heart because so many fans would leave him. LeBron James has to choose between a bigger stage and an empty heart. If he has a soul then he will stay in Cleveland forever. Anyone who thinks that he will leave needs to open their eyes.

RESPONSES TO THE STATE OF THE UNION... Dear Editor, President Obama gave his first State of the Union address and I thought that he did a good job. One of the things he talked about was how he has made tax cuts for the working class. He also acknowledged that the bank bail outs were a very unpopular choice. President Obama also said he does not want to drill for oil in this country. I did not agree with that, because I want gas to be cheaper. I am happy that job creation has been given a high priority. Overall I thought President Obama gave a good speech. Craig Biedler, 12 Dear Editor, I think it is great how Obama talked about cutting taxes, especially for the younger generation. This is going to enable students right out of school to get an easier start on life. President Obama was a great speaker because he could include some humor in while delivering a

serious speech about our country’s economic conditions. I have no doubt that he will watch over and take care of the United States the right way. Derek Underwood, 12

Dear Editor, President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address was very interesting. He is an amazing speaker and he inspired hope in millions of people in giving his speech. He talked about how he did not like having to give bailouts to the banks. He also started talking about plans to increase jobs in the United States. He used China as an example as they are working hard to increase jobs. He said, “Our nation has always been built to compete,” and I agree one hundred percent. President Obama does not want to see the United States coming in second place. Hussain Abdulhabib, 11 Dear Editor, Obama did a great job with

his first state of union address. He made many references to America’s success throughout history. He also made a lot of bold statements that kept everyone applauding. Obama claimed that the problems in America today are the reasons why he ran for president. He also said that the war in Iraq is going to end and that our troops are coming home. Obama got everyone clapping when he mentioned making tax cuts. He is a great speaker and I think if he meets his goals he will make our country a better place for everyone. Erika Anderson, 10

Dear Editor, Obama came out talking about our country’s progress. He noted that the worst of our economic struggle is behind us. I think this is true for many families but there are still some that are struggling to get by day to day. Obama also mentioned that he wants to tax larger banks. Then he spoke about jobs being the top priority

in 2010. The president made it known that small businesses need help staying in business and that he plans on giving them the help they need. After this speech I feel a lot better about the direction our country is heading in for the year 2010 and 2011. Tom Calhoun, 10 Dear Editor, President Obama reassured everyone saying that America was bound to succeed. He backed this up by talking about historical events such as black Tuesday and bloody Sunday. I feel that he is trying to say is that anytime America is challenged we overcome. Since Obama has been in office the recession has gotten less severe. Obama stated that things would be better if the Democrats and Republicans could work together, but both groups are stubborn and disagree too much. I think Obama knows what is best for our country and he will lead us in the right direction. Ryan Wise, 10

Dear Editor, Obama’s speech was, as usual, extremely well presented and was met with a lot of applause. He proposed a lot of great bills he wants to pass and while they sound good, I do not know if he will be able to get them passed. I have heard a lot of people wishing that Obama would address the issue of jobs in America, so I am happy that he did. Part of aiding the American people on their job hunting is furthering construction on our country’s infrastructure. Other countries in Europe and Asia have made advances past us, and Obama proposed that it is time to catch up. I feel like heading in this direction will help a lot. Obama mentioned his dislike of bail-outs, discussing how the larger banks played games with America’s money. Regardless of everything else, Obama’s resolve seems firm as ever. I believe he is keeping a level head in these harsh times. Skyler Palmer, 12

Animal Planet rocks my world OPINION BY KORY

At 2:30 p.m., most students are thinking about going home to take an after-school nap. Some are dreading a rough practice for their school sport. However, some are thinking of rushing home to get in front of their televisions so they can see the beginning of the most important show on television. I am not talking about Teen Mom, For the Love of Ray-J or even Keeping Up With the Kardashians. I am speaking about Big Cat Diary, the Animal Planet show that is sweeping through our high school. Animal Planet is growing to be one of the most important channels on television next to ESPN and MTV. It surely puts VH1 and CNN to shame. For those of you who are new to the broadcasting network, I am here to tell you about the five best shows.

5. Wild Recon If you have not heard of Donald Schultz, you must have been living under a box for the last year. Schultz is an animal expert on a search for medicine found in certain wild animals. Wild Recon follows him around the globe to find new medicine to cure diseases such as HIV/AIDS. Schultz also recently aired a special called “Venom in Vegas” in which he stayed in a room filled with one hundred snakes for ten days. If that does not scream awesome, I would like to know what does. 4. Dogs 101 Cats 101 is also shown on Animal Planet, but since I feel cats are the spawn of the devil, I prefer Dogs 101. When my dog, Steve, and I roll up on the couch and learn about the different breeds of dogs, I can feel us growing closer together. Dogs 101 teaches about the best types of breeds and whatever you need to know concerning your decision in picking the right dog. “When I was six my family watched a whole marathon of Dogs 101 so we could pick the perfect dog,” freshman Alyssa Schwab said.

3. The Most Extreme Every school day I am not fully awake until 3rd period study hall when I can enjoy this great program. TME counts down the top ten best animals in a variety of categories, such as best shark or worst smelling animals. It is like SportsCenter’s Top Ten plays of the day, only stretched out into a half hour and higher quality because it features animals. “When deciding between watching SportsCenter and The Most Extreme,” senior Luke Currens said, “I always take into account the fact that TME has extreme in the title. Why would I not watch something with extreme in its name?” 2. Pit Boss Pit Boss follows Shorty Rossi and his crew around Los Angeles as they run a talent agency for dwarfs. I do not condone the life that Rossi used to follow, as he was jailed for a gang-related shooting when he was 18 years old. 10 years, 10 months and 10 days later he was released and realized he wanted to turn his life around. While running his talent agency for dwarfs, he also attempts to rescue pit bulls that have been abandoned. In the first

episode alone he rescued a pitbull loitering outside of his friend’s restaurant and then proceeded to get in a physical fight with the owner over the safety of the dog. If that is not enough to get you to watch the show, just remember that these people are helping defenseless dogs while also helping dwarfs find work in Hollywood. 1. Big Cat Diary BCD is possibly the most influential show in the history of the universe. It follows three scientists, Jonathan Scott, Simon King and Saba Douglas-Hamilton, across the African safari tracking big cats. Scott, King and DouglasHamilton follow lions, cheetahs

and leopards respectively. After only a couple of episodes you will feel like you know the cats personally. After watching BCD every day for the last semester, I have all the cheetah’s names memorized and am currently thinking about getting “Toto” tattooed across my neck. I also wish to travel to Africa to be with the cats. Next time your sports practice is cancelled or you have time before you need to go to a government visitation, remember to flip on Animal Planet. After only a short half hour, you will feel fulfilled and will want to follow the lives of cats in Africa and learn the most extreme animal myths.

Big Cat Diary will take you into a world that makes you feel like you are actually in the African Savannah.

Snow days are a must for students OPINION BY BRANDON

This year, as well as in past years, we have had a gratuitous amount of snow, but very rarely do we have an actual snow day. Unknown to the superintendents and other administrators are the reasons why snow days are so important for the development of students into adults. My job is to inform the administration of the reasons why students believe snow days are important to their development and education.

One of the main reasons why snow days are important, and why we should have more of them, is that it makes us return to our primal instincts. There is nothing like trecking through a foot of snow, simply to replenish the food supply. Doing so brings us closer to our family, which is very important in today’s society. “I need my family even more then school. They teach me everything, which is why I think more snow days would bring us closer to them since we would be home more often,” said junior Jon Davis. Another main reason why students deserve more snow days is that you truly become a man or woman when you participate in a massive neighborhood snow ball fight. It is practically a rite of passage

This may look like a horrible scene to many, but for those experienced in snow days they would see this as a playground of fun.

into the adult world. This is just another great reason why snow days are important in our country today. “I have been in at least four snow ball fights. I finally feel like a real man, since I have won all four of them,” said sophomore Eric Black. Another important reason why snow days are a necessity to a student is that they are literally preperation for the real world. There will be many times later in life when you are going to your job and you cannot arrive on time. This may be due to the fact that the roads are impassable because of treacherous ice and debris in the road from gale force blizzards. Snow days also prepare you for future life because when you become a parent, you will realize that your children must have snow in order to become an adult.

“In order for my kids to become adults they must have lived through at least 12 snow days in their school career. If they do not reach this landmark, I will simply have to get rid of them or make snow days, but most likely get rid of them,” said senior Mike Bowen. This statement by Bowen just goes to show that without snow days, we will simply not have children. This would be a small price to pay for the lack of snow days in our region. Many feel that it is up to our higher authorities, that they must give us snow days when snow days are due, or we shall face the consequences of people’s choices to merely abandon their children. Finally, the main reason why snow days are a must in every students’s childhood, is that they help educate us in the different styles of living. I feel in order to help make world peace, we must experience

different cultures, and there is no better place to start than with the culture of the Eskimos. The Eskimos or “Montagnais,” which is another term used to describe them, (something we would know if we were more cultured) live mainly in Alaska. If we were to have more snow days it would make us more knowledgeable of Eskimos, and since their history is traced back 5,000 years, more snow days would also tie in to getting closer to our ancient ancestors. “ I feel that we could all learn from the Eskimos, and during these times of scarce amounts of snow, we have little chance to do so. We should be granted with the opportunity to spend the day loosely learning about Eskimos,” said senior Jake Gissinger. This just goes to show snow days help us grow as adults, and they will also help our school become a school of excellence.

Dating statuses cause mayhem OPINION BY MIKE

Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year when uncontrollable hormones are excused. This day also marks the nine year anniversary of my very first girlfriend. On Feb. 14, 2001, the teachers seemed to excuse the fact that I was running around hugging every single girl within a 30 foot radius. One girl, however, always returned my hugs with a smile on her face. I told her I loved her. Later that night, I signed on to AOL Instant Messenger and sent her an instant message that read, “Will you go out with me?” She said yes, and she told me how much she loved me. We broke up the next day, and I was just a lonely nine-yearold boy wandering around my house singing “Yesterday” by the Beatles. Did we go out? Yes. We went out, but we did not go out. I mean

we never actually went anywhere, but we both gave our consent to engage in a relationship. Although people may become unsure of the level of a certain relationship, Facebook has offered a solution—the relationship status. On Facebook, users are able to edit their account so that they are either: “single,” “in a relationship,” “in an open relationship,” “engaged,” “married,” “widowed,” “divorced” or “it’s complicated.” The only valid way of confirming one’s relationship status is by observing his or her Facebook relationship status. But, what if those eight categories do not match up with your accustomed slang terms? Because of the confusion caused by dating status terminology, many lovebirds are left to guess at what stage their relationship has reached. Lucky for you, I have got it all figured out. Going Out: In today’s society, if one asks someone else to “go out” with him or her, it is understood that one wishes to be made an exclusive couple. However, if the person asking one to “go out” also supplies a specific activity to be done, then there is no implied

desire for a relationship. For example, if my dad asks me to go out to eat with him, I am able to understand that he does not want to date me; he only wants to get a burger together. Talking: When two people who share similar romantic feelings for each other are “talking,” it means that they are approaching the early stages of a relationship. The dating term “talking” is usually used in a more incognito form. This type of “talking” can mean over-friendly text messages involving kissy faces and other flirty emotions. “Talking” is not to be confused with normal talking. While I may talk to my teacher in class, I am merely communicating information, not trying to advance our relationship. Seeing Each Other/Hanging Out: When two individuals consistently act on the needy feeling to spend extra time in each other’s presence, they are “seeing each other” or “hanging out.” This pre-relationship stage is the closest thing to being an exclusive couple. Once one has surpassed the “talking” stage, he or she will surely engage in some sort of “hang out.” A “hang out” is basically an extremely casual

date whether it involves watching a movie at home or a game of Battleship. Once the “hang out” turns into “hang outs,” it is considered “hanging out” or “seeing each other.” If I saw a baby at a grocery store, does that mean I had former relations with that baby? No, the phrase “seeing each other” is not to be used in the past tense unless you are discussing the literal act of visually noticing an individual. Messing Around: If two people that are attracted to one another act on their impulses to engage in certain promiscuous behavior, it is considered “messing around.”

When one “messes around,” he or she acts immorally and shows his or her affection in a more physical sense. This phrase is unbelievably dangerous if it is used in an improper context. Since the phrase “messing around” is often used synonymously with “joking around,” people believe that the two phrases are interchangeable. Those people could not be more wrong. After deciphering the slang terms, I have come to the conclusion that Facebook only needs to offer one selection for the relationship status—“it’s complicated.”

Intramural sports bring benefits OPINION BY SAM

Intramural sports build character. Strength, agility and sportsmanship are required. The only intramural sport offered at the high school is basketball, but more sports should be offered to the students. Intramural sports at Wadsworth High School should be offered to students all year long. Many benefits would come out of students being able to compete in intramural competition. It would be a great experience for students who do not want to partake in the varsity sports. Students who simply want to play sports and have fun with their friends could participate in the different athletic events. This would be a great way for them to get involved with the school and be in a good environment. Intramural sports would be the closest thing to being on a sports team without all the pressure. Intramural sports would insure fun for everyone. Players on intramural teams can go and hang out with their friends while intensely participating in a game with their team. It could also promote students getting along with other students who they might not always agree with.

according to a study by Time magazine. That means one out of every three teens are overweight, but by offering an additional intramural sport at the school that number could be reduced. By participating in an intramural sport, students are involved in an after school activity. This could potentially reduce the number of teenage crimes in Wadsworth. Students would have a place to go and spend their time instead of merely hanging out downtown at the library or the gazebo. “They would keep kids out of trouble and off the streets,” said freshman Rachel Goddard. Having intramural sports all year long would benefit both the school and the community. Many positive changes would come out of the competition between the student body. With all the positive “They would keep kids things that would come off the streets and out from intramural sports, of trouble.” they should be a high priority for the high -Rachel Goddard, 9 school.

“I really like that we have basketball as an intramural sport at the high school, but I wish there were other sports offered so I could always be involved and having fun with my friends ” said junior Natalie Davis. Other sports that could be offered for example are: flag football, volleyball, ultimate frisbee and bowling. There are endless possibilities concerning the number of sports that the high school could offer for students to play if they are interested. Intramural sports could encourage students to exercise. The school has been trying to change the lunch menu and place healthier snacks in the vending machines, why not promote exercise as being fun also. Thirty-three percent of teens are either overweight or obese

Junior Danny stands proudly next to his near-perfect 1997 Buick LeSabre. BY EVAN DAMMARELL

Junior Danny 1997 Buick LeSabre has gone through multiple ownerships. “First it belonged to my Grandma, and later on she gave it to my sister Laura. After Laura graduated from high school, I got to get behind the reins of the white stallion myself,” said Arch. Despite being in almost perfect condition, the Buick LeSabre, or simply referred to as “The LeSabre” by Arch and his friends,

has its fair share of issues. One of those problems is that the car’s gas gauge is broken. “It can get really stressful not knowing how much gas I have left in my tank, but I just have to watch my odometer and it is all good,” said Arch. The other problem with the near-perfect Buick LeSabre is that recently the right side-view mirror was lost to the Arch’s household’s garage. One early morning before school, Arch was backing out of his garage, still in a tired daze

and not paying attention to his environment. He mistakenly hit the right side-view mirror against the garage, removing it from the car itself. Arch was so traumatized from the event that he would not make a comment on the matter. Despite its broken gas gauge and missing right side-view mirror, Arch’s LeSabre is still kept in near-perfect condition. In all honesty, this car should probably be called The Hunk of the Month instead of The Junk of the Month.

Toughest sport to play revealed in tournament SPORTS OPINION BY TATE MOORE

“Basketball was so hard today.” “Yeah, well you would have died at swimming.” “Swimming? Try making it through wrestling practice.” Conversations like these take place every single day after our school’s sports teams finish their practice. Athletes think their sport is the toughest to play. Most athletes think the grass is always greener on the other side. Well, with March Madness rolling around, it is time for WHS to have a tournament of its own to answer this question: Which sport is the hardest to participate in at our high school? From the results of a studentvoted poll, the top eight sports at school have been randomly placed in a single elimination tournament format to find out our school’s toughest sport. Round One Football vs. Soccer: In the ultimate fall sport match up, the question of physicality comes to mind. Football players will tell you of the punishing hits. Soccer players will tell you of the nonstop running. “Soccer is much more demanding. In football, they get to circle up and hold hands after every play,” Coach Johnson, the soccer coach, said. Mr. Johnson is unfortunately

wrong; the football players tackle the kickballers. Wrestling vs. Basketball: The winter sports match up might look close to the common fan. The bottom line is, the basketball team tries really hard, but the wrestling team works really hard. As Junior Prescott Williams admits, “I want no part of that wrestling room.” Wrestling wins in a major decision. Track/Cross Country vs. Baseball/Softball: In the spring sports match up, it comes down to the intimidation factor. Would you rather get out run by Coach Currens and Coach Farr, or out hit by Coach Madigan and Coach Schmeltzer Sr.? No one messes with the Mad-Dawg; baseball and softball steal this one. Swimming vs. Volleyball: The volleyball players brag about their short shorts and long workouts. Too bad the swimmer’s speedos are shorter and their workouts are longer too. The swimmers lap the spikers and move on to the next round.

Congratulations to the champions of the toughest sports competition, Nick and the Grizzly Wrestling Team. They recently secured their 18th consecutive Suburban League Title and ranked #1 in the Final State Coaches Poll.

Round Two Football vs. Wrestling: One could bet the farm that this would be a physical match up. The king of the fall sports pitted up against the king of the winter sports. It would seem that the only way to decide this one would

be to ask someone who has done both. Junior wrestling standout Clay Wenger jokingly said, “I stopped playing football after my freshman year because it was too easy.” If Clay Wenger says wrestling wins, then wrestling wins. Baseball/Softball vs. Swimming: In the other half of our Final Four, endurance is the key factor. Senior pitcher Jordan Cutting argues that baseball games take hours, while swimming events

can be over in just seconds. Junior Josh Stephan scored this one for the swimmers when he said, “The best case scenario in baseball is a home run. What do they get to do? Jog around the bases. In swimming, the best case scenario is that you work your tail off for the entire race.” Championship With a championship on the line, these two sports bring out their big guns. Wrestlers cut weight. Swimmers shave their heads. Wrestlers work out before school. Swimmers have already

been working out for an hour. The debate could go on and on. Maybe Mr. John Burton should prepare his science fair project on the debate between the swimmers and wrestlers. Instead, I took the question to the toughest, most feared man in the school, Coach Bobby Jones. “Wrestling,” decided Jones. There you have it. The toughest sport to participate in at our high school is wrestling. If you disagree, all arguments can be taken up with Coach Bobby Jones.

school students. It was so awesome to see them do so well,” said Warner when asked about the team. The three competitors and fellow teammate Brian Weaver, who did not compete, stayed at the Clarion Inn where the Special Olympic volunteers held a dance for the competitors. Weaver was eager to talk about how much he loved dancing. On race day, the team got to finally see their competition. The field was made up of 282 competitors from 19 different counties. Sporting their Wadsworth track warm-ups, which were borrowed from Mr. Currens, the three competitors waited for their race. Studer competed in two races.

He finished in fourth place and second place winning a silver medal. “I worked hard at it. We had lots of practices at school. I was excited that I got a medal,” Studer said. He wears his medal with pride every day. Bennett and Bates both competed in two races as well. Coincidentally, they competed in the same two races against each other. “They competed in both the short and long course races together. Shawnee beat Anna by .8 of a second,” said Warner. It was a great day full of success for Wadsworth. Bennett and Studer walked away with silver medals, while Bates brought home gold and

bronze. “I felt very happy and proud when they gave me my medal,” said Bennett grinning from ear to ear. As one can see the three competitors were very pleased with their achievements. They

put everything they had into training and preparing for this competition. With the support of family and friends, not only were they able to bring home gold, they showed everyone what they were made of: Wadsworth pride.

Victory shines in eyes of Special Olympic competitors BY JEFF GAHAN

For some people, to win an Olympic medal is a dream, but for a few students here at Wadsworth that became a reality. On Feb. 3, high school students Hayden Studer, Anna Bennett and Shawnee Bates participated in the Special Olympic games held at Brandywine Ski Resort. This consisted of four events: Cross Country skiing, downhill skiing, figure skating and speed skating. Bates, Bennett and Studer all competed in the cross-country skiing short and long course events. Mr. Warner, a Wadsworth teacher, coached the three competitors. “I have done this event with adults before, but never high

15 Battle of the best: James versus Jordan S PORTS 2 SPORTS OPINION BY ADAM WOODARD AND ANTHONY SCHROCK

Picture this: the year is 2003, and the great Michael Jordan has just retired. The NBA is now looking for a new star to emerge. LeBron James was drafted first overall in the 2003 NBA draft, and ever since his first professional game, he has been compared to Jordan. Now the question is who is better? Adam Woodard (AW): I have not always been a basketball fan, but LeBron James, the greatest basketball player of all time, has turned me into one. Nobody is as exciting to watch as James. Anthony Schrock(AS): Have you ever heard of Michael Jordan? There is no doubt he is the best professional basketball player to ever play the game. AW: Have you ever seen James dunk? He abuses the rim every time he throws it down! I feel bad for the hoops inside the Quicken Loans Arena. AS: True, but watching Jordan shoot was amazing! It was almost guaranteed to go in every time he released the ball. AW: I have to agree that Jordan was a great shooter. However, James has become one of the best shooters in the game today. Not to mention no one can stop him when he drives the lane. AS: Congratulations to him! Jordan played against some of the best players of all time and he constantly beat them. AW: Yeah Anthony, you are right. Kobe Bryant is terrible. Dwayne Wade is awful too. The guys that are playing today are twice as good as the guys that played in Jordan’s time. AS: Do any players today have the word “legend” in their nickname like Larry Bird? Think about the 1992 Summer Olympics. Michael was apart of

THE BRUIN

“The Dream Team.” This team consisted of the best players of that time: Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Charles Barkley. AW: Anthony, do you ever

watch sports? Because if you did, you would know James was also recently a part of an Olympic Gold Medal team. AS: How about we move on? When you think about sports movies, the first three that come to mind are “Remember the Titans,” “Rocky,” and “Space Jam.” Every kid growing up saw “Space Jam” and loved it. I remember singing the theme song to that movie for years of my life. James has not had

A Game.” AS: I have yet to see it, but I hear that it is good. I find it hard to believe that it can even come close to “Space Jam.” AW: James was the high school player of the year his senior year and did not need to go to college. That is when you know you are a great player. Jordan was cut from his high school team! AS: That fact tells me that he worked twice as hard as James to accomplish all the things he did in his career. Jordan worked hard to get his chance and look where it got him. He won six NBA Championship rings and was also a five time league MVP. How many championships has James won again? Oh right, he has not won any. AW: Jordan played for 18

February 2010

seasons. James has only played for seven. People just need to give James more time. James is without a doubt the best player in the league today, and Jordan was the best player of his time as well. AS: Jordan’s stats do not lie. He has better numbers and many more awards than James. AW: In 10 years, when analysts discuss this topic, they will say that James’ numbers and awards are better than Jordan’s. Not to mention James’ nicknames are much cooler than Jordan’s. AS: Are you telling me that “Air Jordan” is not a cool name? AW: It is a cool name, but it is not as cool as “King James” or the “Akron Hammer.” AS: Well if you are going to talk about nicknames then we are now going to talk about shoes. The Air Jordan shoe line is by far more successful and better looking than the LeBron’s. AW: Are we talking about fashion or basketball? AS: Fine, let us talk about the ability to dunk. How many times has James won the dunk contest? AW: Zero. AS: That is right, he is too much of a girl to participate. Jordan jumped from the free throw line and threw one down. Has James ever done that before? AW: Well James did hit a game winning shot last year against the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference Finals. That was pretty cool. AS: I will give you that one. But nobody will forget what Jordan did to the Cavaliers in the final game of the first round of the 1989 NBA Playoffs. His shot was so great that it has gone down in history as “The Shot,” proving he is better. AW: He may be the best player of all time as of now. Like I said, in ten years, this will have been a foolish debate. James is, and will be, the best professional basketball player of all time. Only time will tell which one of these stars will come out on top. Fans of the game will just have to wait and see.

in order to achieve their goals. With such a diverse group, the students do not always find common ground and cause conflict when trying to make it to the national competition. The club members include boys from the football team, cheerleaders and students who have been trained through out their lives for this particular goal. Throughout the first half of the series, they over came obstacles such as changing reputations, leaving home, bullies and other challenges teens deal with. It teaches them life lessons, and the students get a chance to see what it is like to be in someone else’s shoes. “I look forward to watching Glee every Wednesday with my friends and look forward to the

episodes to come,” said junior Christina Rossi. There is a star cast including lead singer Rachel, played by Lea Michele. Michele was nominated at this year’s Golden Globe Awards for Best Female actress. Joining her at the Golden Globes was Matthew Morrison, who plays main character Schuester. Morrison was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards. With airing only one half of the Glee season, more success is sure to come to these flourishing actors and actresses. Anticipated titles to hit shelves in 2010 While the new year brings many things, some of the most anticipated would have to be the new video games making appearances throughout 2010. Whether for X-Box, Play Station 3 or the Wii, a whole new generation of games come out every year to suit a wide variety of interests. While there are only a handful of titles listed here, there are many more coming that are sure to bring hours of entertainment as well. A variety of sources were used in the compiling of this list, and the games are listed in no particular order. While announced in 2005, the psychological thriller, Alan Wake, has had plenty of time for perfection. The story depicts an author who is haunted by a small northwestern town after his wife mysteriously vanishes. The game presents interesting ideas to make for an engaging horror story.

forgotten first cartoon, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. As Mickey, players will soon realize that every action results in a consequence. Boasting multiple protagonists, an extensive range of branching story paths and unique game play mechanics, Heavy Rain is

expected to be a hit. Set in the near future, the game follows police procedure adventures. The intricate details are sure to make this title stand out. With a stunning line of predecessors to outshine, Halo: Reach is expected to be extremely entertaining. The plot portrays a planet that has fallen prey to the evil covenant before the events of the first Halo. It is projected

to be a more character driven experience than previous games in the series.

Another game that has to live up to the expectations of its franchise, Final Fantasy XIII will give gamers all the aspects of the Final Fantasy Franchise with a new story line. One does not need to understand the enigmatic details of the previews to know that the visuals of the game are certainly not lacking. Although forgotten by some in the wake of the World of Warcraft Franchise, Diablo will continue to uphold Blizzard’s high expectations through Diablo 3. Wielding new classes and monsters, the game is sure to provoke the same sort of enthusiasm that met the first two games in the series. Picking up where the first left off, Mario Galaxy 2 continues as Mario experiences more interstellar adventures. Although just recently announced, the game is expected to come out just in time for Christmas. No matter what one’s taste in video games is, there are so many new games coming out that there is sure to be a game produced that will become a new favorite.

‘Dear John’ trumps ‘Avatar’ ratings BY ALYSSA POWELL

The highly anticipated movie, Dear John, based off of the novel by Nicholas Sparks, was released into theaters Feb. 5. This highly awaited love story featuring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried knocked Avatar out of its top spot which it held for seven straight weeks. Dear John opened with $32.4 million in ticket sales which put Avatar in second with $23.6 million. This tragic love story of a military man, John, who is on leave and later falls in love with a young woman, Savannah, is a story that touches many. The love that is portrayed by them when John is overseas is beyond imaginable to anyone looking for

that ‘perfect love story.’ The beginning of this love story starts when Savannah Curtis’s (Seyfried) bag falls into the ocean and John Tyree (Tatum) dives in to retrieve it for her. While overseas, the two write letters to each other so they will know exactly what is going on. Even though they are not with one another, they write it all down. “I went with a few friends and arrived around 6:45 p.m. and it was sold out for that showing. We ended up coming back later to see the later showing and it was great. I cried, especially when you find out what Savannah did to John and how it all plays out in the end,” said senior Angel Sanderson. Theaters that were sold out

did not stop their sales there. Ticket sales continued at a high demand continuous days after the premier. Many feel that Nicholas Sparks’ movies deserve high awards and are the greatest movies ever seen, and others have their own opinions on the movies and novels that he creates. “If I was John, I sure would not have fallen in love as fast as he did, and surely would not stay with someone who caused an upset,” said senior Nick Kozma. This love story of a soldier who falls for a conservative college girl proved its greatness in how the tickets were sold. Although a number of movie theatres were sold out and the first showing of Dear John was

long awaited, many were left disappointed by parts of the movie that they did not agree with or were different from the novel. “Personally, I feel as if the ending was terrible. It was not what I had been expecting at all and left me with many questions, but all in all the movie was pretty good,” sophomore Joy Fajt said. Dear John is still being shown in theaters and touching the hearts of many to the point where Avatar was forced to step down from its number one spot in sales. Nicholas Sparks has struck again with a movie that caught the eye of many and moved them as well. Dear John is still anticipated and still available to viewers to have not yet had the chance to view this movie.
