Buckeyes put Ohio back on the map The Ohio State Buckeyes resurrect Ohio spirit with 8th National Championship win, first since 2002 BY ALEX LENC AND REGAN SZALAY

What can a team do when they are faced with starting its third string quarterback in the College Football playoffs? The Ohio State Buckeyes defied the odds and brought a wave of excitement across Ohio with a National Championship win. This year brought the first ever college football playoffs, giving the top four teams a chance to win their way to the championship title and prove their worth to the whole nation. OSU’s monumental win over Wisconsin in the Big 10 Championship game caused dispute with the fourth seed placement, but in the end, the honor was gifted to Ohio State, after the Buckeyes dismantled the Badgers with a score of 59-0. With Ohio clinching the last playoff spot, a sense of hype and pride spread throughout the state. Wadsworth High School students and staff were big supporters of the Buckeyes, wearing scarlet and gray on the days leading up to the big game as well as on game day. Since OSU was placed as the number four seed, many believed the Buckeyes were doomed against the number one seed Alabama in the first round of the playoffs. This situation did not phase Buckeye’s head

coach Urban Meyer and his team since winning six games as the underdog, under his command. Four of these six games occurred within the 2014-2015 season. Ohio State had been riding the whole season on their second string quarterback, J.T. Barrett, until he suffered a seasonending ankle injury. Third string quarterback Cardale Jones had to step up for his first career start in a pivotal game, which happened to be the Big 10 Championship game, where he ended up leading the team to a victory. Alabama, being the highest seed in the playoffs, left Ohio State once again to be the unlikely team to win, just as they were against Wisconsin. Alabama is always a college football juggernaut, having won more national championships than Ohio State. Being the underdogs did not stop Ohio State fans from taking the trip to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl in hopes the Buckeyes would earn a win. Ohio State spirit was shown throughout schools and workplaces across Ohio on the days prior and game day of the Sugar Bowl. After the Sugar Bowl victory, Ohioans rejoiced and celebrated with pride after the performance of the Bucks with the final score 42-35; Buckeyes with the “W.” Next on the plate for the Ohio

State Buckeyes was the long awaited National Championship game. Their opponents were the Oregon Ducks, led by 20142015 Heisman winner, Marcus Mariota. Consequently, most people thought the Buckeyes did not stand a chance. Even though Ohio State was the underdog, the Buckeyes’ fan base was proud of how far they had come. Once again, the fan turn out and pride for OSU at the National Championship was remarkable, flooding the AT&T Stadium with scarlet and gray face paint, poster signs and, of course, decked out OSU attire. Representing WHS at the game was Principal, Steve Moore. “I have always wanted to go to a Super Bowl, but after going to the National Championship game, I do not think it could have been any better...It was just awesome!” stated Mr. Moore, when asked about the atmosphere of the National Championship game. In the end, Ohio State came out on top, winning 42-20. This overwhelming victory put Ohio back on the radar and brought joy and happiness to the team and loyal fans. When asked to describe what the OSU victory was like, Dan Ash, 9, described it in one word: “Breathtaking.” With the unexpected win, the Ohio State Buckeyes returned home, bringing not only the trophy, but Ohio pride with them.

Former Grizzly rocks national television BY RACHEL HAAS

Tate Moore, a WHS graduate of the Class of 2011, made the news this past January after being featured on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! TV show. Moore is a current senior at The Ohio State University and majoring in English Education. He was selected to represent OSU on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in a scavenger hunt against a student representative from Oregon in honor of the National Championship game between the two schools. Moore ended up defeating the Oregon student, winning tickets to the game in Texas. The Bruin staff contacted Moore about his national TV appearance on Thursday, Jan. 8. When asked about his performance on the show, Moore replied, “My

goal on the James Kimmel Show was to be funny as possible without embarrassing my family name.” Moore also stated, “There was no doubt in my mind I was going to win that scavenger hunt. I could smell the blood through the computer screen. Grizzlies are winners.” Moore was also a member of The Bruin in 2010 and 2011. He was 2011 Bruin Staffer of the Year. When asked about his time in Bruin, Moore replied, “The two years I spent in the Bruin room made me the man I am today. Coach G demands the best out of everyone in everything they do.” In the future, WHS might see the return of Tate Moore. “My dream job is to be the principal of Wadsworth High School. Tell whoever it is now to get ready to find a new job,” Moore states. Looks like Mr. Moore (Tate’s uncle) better watch his back.

2015 Modest Predictions

Editorial

Welcome to 2015, loyal Bruin subscribers. I hope you all had a relaxing, non-stressful Winter Break, and I hope for more snowdays to be upon us as winter proceeds through the next few months. As you all know, I wrote a rather interesting article at this time last year. If you do not know what it is, let me first tell youit was incredibly awful. I made 30 ridiculously absurd predictions for the year 2014 in one sarcastic, hate-ridden story. To be honest, I am embarrassed to have typed “Mason Egleston” as the byline under that article. In fact, I actually think I was 0 for 30 on my guesses for what this past year was going to bring us. 0 for 30? Really? I mean that is almost as bad as a typical shooting day for Trent Cornacchione in Intramurals. As redemption for that disgusting piece of writing, I am following it up with a more subtle counterpart this year- 16 modest predictions for

E ditorial

The Bruin the year 2015. Here they are folks. 1. I will be forced to step down as Editor-in-chief following this school year due to a contract dispute. 2. The Bruin will feature a Veterans Day story on the front page in the November Issue. 3. The number of dead people in the world will continue to outnumber the living ones. 4. Sliced bread will still be a fad. 5. The Bible will be the number one selling book in the world. 6. Someone will make toast somewhere in the world EVERY SINGLE DAY. 7. The United States will celebrate its 239th birthday. 8. Ponyboy will still be gold. 9. Water will still be wet. 10. Oxygen will still be breathable. 11. The Earth will still be inhabitable. 12. Life will go on. 13. I will still be trying to figure it out. 14. So will you. 15. Deep. 16. You will still subscribe to the Bruin :)

Ham & Corn Mailbag By Ben Bingham and Trent Cornacchione

Happy 2015! I hope you are excited as we are that Ham and Corn are back for a second month! We both love answering your questions, but for Mr. Moore’s sake, please cooperate with our strict schoolappropriate policy. Without further ado, let us get right into this month’s anonymous questions! Q: Who would win in a wrestling match - Ham or Corn? A: Corn. Name one Mormon with athletic ability. (I realize there are a few, but come on.) Q: What are Ham and Corn’s favorite food? A: I would say ham and corn, but that is sort of corny. Q: Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity, to seize everything you ever wanted, one moment, would you capture it, or just let it slip? A: We talked, and we both (Ham & Corn) feel we are not qualified to answer this question, as we are just simply dinner food.

Q: Corn, is it true that you took ballet classes for a part of your life? A: Yeah, but I am still your mom’s favorite vegetable. Q: Who are your favorite members of the Bruin staff? A: Our Bruin staff consists of: Moira, Rachel, Mason, Regan, both Alex’s, Olivia, Haylee, Elizabeth, Jordin, Maria, Brooke, Noah, Hannah, Gary, Robert, Trent, Maddie, Tim, Maggie, Connor, Ben, Jamie, Cameron, John, Chase, Charlotte, Madison and Adam. But we all “Noe” Gary Noe is the one and only pick. Gary Noe for president in 2036! Q: Would you rather have arms as long as your fingers or fingers as long as your arms? A: See answer 3. Q: Will there be anymore additions to the Ham & Corn Mailbag? A: We are tossing around the idea of adding Editor-in-chief Mason Egleston and sports writer Jamie Oplinger as Eggs and Jam.

Martin luther king Day reactions America is still prejudiced toward race. Though it is thought to be an issue of the past, race is still a point of contention in today’s society. There is still a barrier separating those of different colors. I agree with Rand Paul’s statement about uniting “two Americas.” I think the “two Americas” should have been united long ago, and it is sad that it is still a problem today. Evan Goebel, 10 Every day should be a day to represent equality, not just Martin Luther King Day. Nonetheless, it is a day to look back and focus on what is morally right. In the words of King himself, “The time is always right to do what is right.” Things have changed so much since then, and it is amazing. There will always be racist people here and there, but I think generally, as a

whole, America is not nearly as prejudiced as it used to be. Lauren Whitley, 10 “Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.” Today, this quote still remains true. Sincere ignorance comes from those who are products on an assembly line. For example, if a child’s parents are Republicans, then that child believes himself or herself to be a Republican. They do not think for themselves anymore, which leads to the conscientious stupidity. Emily Eggleton, 10 Martin Luther King, Jr. made a huge mark in history on August 28, 1963. He spoke out against racism and took a huge risk. This important day in history means a lot to the people of the

United States because without the help of MLK, our world would not be the same. 50 years ago, Martin Luther King became the youngest man ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He earned this award by giving his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, D.C. He risked his life to fight for the rights of others. King deserved to receive the Nobel Peace Prize because of the brave actions he took to end racism the U.S. Jenna Johnson, 11 “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.” This year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, protests arose all around the country. Addressing issues such as racial equality and police brutality, protestors went about in a peaceful manner instead of using violent methods

to spread their messages. After the Ferguson incident, people used violence to protest their messages. Violent protests will never fix anything, so I am glad to see that peaceful protests were used on MLK Day, just the way MLK would have wanted the protests to be. By loving everyone equally, we can eliminate racial injustice and no longer view other races as enemies, but as friends. Luke Lambright, 11 “If you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t run, then walk, if you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” People give up a lot, and when someone is fighting for something like racial equality, they cannot give up no matter what. It takes a lot of courage to keep going if the fight is hard, so

MLK reminding everyone that it is important is really benefited today’s world. MLK never gave up and gave everything he had to get racial equality. It is amazing how far America has come since the 60’s with treating blacks equally. Even though there is still some discrimination against them, I am sure MLK would be very proud. Lauren Bennett, 10 “Only in the darkness can you see the stars.” When you are in a dark place, you tend to appreciate the small things; you can find the beautiful things in life. He was fighting for equal rights and people treated him badly, but he still chose to keep fighting. He did not let the darkness beat him; he saw good things while being surrounded by the dark. Je suis Charlie. I am Charlie. It is a phrase that has been on everybody’s lips lately. On Jan. 7, French Muslims opened fire in Paris, killing 17 people and wounding many others. “It is an attack on the foundation of French beliefs,” said Mrs. May, when asked her opinion on the Charlie Hebdo attack. Among the 17 victims were members of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo’s editorial staff, police officers and innocent hostages. Around noon that day, two gunmen, Cherif Kouachi and Said Kouachi, went on a murderous rampage at an editorial meeting of a newspaper that previously released offensive cartoons portraying the Muslim Prophet Mohammed. The Kouachi brothers had been under surveillance since 2010, but the investigation was suspended due to the men being labeled as “low risk.” The brothers claimed they were associated with Islamic extremists in the Middle East. Due to comments made during the attack, attention was focused on Al-Qaeda. A few days after the attack, a senior leader of Al-Qaeda in Yemen announced via video footage that they were responsible

for the attacks in Paris. After the attack, Charlie Hebdo’s editorial staff took refuge at Liberation newspaper’s building, where the survivors released their

latest edition since the attack. After creating a new cover, the new editor-in-chief, Gerard Biard, described the staff’s reaction: “We knew we needed to figure out how

to continue to laugh and making others laugh.” Another attack took place at a Jewish supermarket where Ahmedi Coulibaly took multiple hostages. Four were killed, while multiple survivors were hidden in a walkin freezer by a Muslim employee, Lassana Bathily. All three gunmen were killed, but French police are still on high alert and have increased border security. Despite all this, the attack has only brought the French people, and others across the world, together. Hundreds of thousands marched across France and other areas to pay tribute to the victims. 23,000 people gathered in the French city of Nice while anywhere from 30,000 to 80,000 people gathered in the French city of Pau. There was a vigil held in Toulouse, France in which 120,000 people attended. “The thing is they [French government] need to have stricter laws, but there is a fine line between strict and looser laws,” said Mrs. May when asked what needs to happen in order to stop this attack. Instead of cracking under the pressure, this attack has shown that terrorists cannot take away people’s livelihood in any situation. Je suis Charlie.

What is your opinion on school spirit?

“School spirit sucks. As a cheerleader, we are forced to cheer to a crowd that stares blankly back at you.” - Katie, 11

“Some people have school spirit, others do not. People choose to have a relationship with technology rather than people.” - Mr. Austin

“We are not as rivalistic as we used to be. Everyone takes everything too seriously. A lot of our traditions have been taken away.” - Kailin, 9

“We need more spirit weeks instead of just before homecoming. We should spread them out throughout the year.” - Ellie, 10

“We have so many things going on and in so many places. The ‘school spirit’ just is not overwhelming.” -Mrs. Csaky

“Our school spirit sucks. Maybe if we had more pep rallies, some school spirit would come to WHS.” - Max, 10

O PINION 1

Spirit epidemic runs rampant

OPINION BY HANNAH

School spirit: If found, please return to WHS. In the last years, school spirit has hit an all-time low. From pep rallies to girls basketball games, students no longer have the same attitude. They have lost all enthusiasm when it comes to cheering on their fellow Grizzlies. In 2011, the student section received notice when controversy struck. After chanting inappropriate things to a Green basketball player, both students and teachers were put in a negative spotlight. In 2012, students responded with a walkout at a basketball game. Angered by faculty for not being able to do certain themes, they came for the national anthem and left together. I am in no way saying

that anything that happened previously was right, but what happened to the school spirit that students before us had? Students used to fill the entire student section and more at every single game. Now, at certain games, teams are lucky to see three students in the student section. Especially noticeable at girls basketball games, lack of students’ presence is saddening. The girls team has only lost two games this season, yet they have extremely low student attendance. Why is their attendance so low? “It is our duty and responsibility to carry on and identify the inherent spirit of this place. Our goal is to get everyone excited and to create more spiritual opportunities for them. We are working on a whiffle ball game, a new spirit stick to help bring more spirit,” said Mr. Berg, leader of the Spirit Club. We can be respectful while still having excellent school spirit. It is both faculty and student’s responsibility to uphold the spirit of this school and create new traditions. “School spirit starts and stops with our students,” said Mr. Berg.

ELIMINATE DISCRIMINATION once and for all

Irony found in affirmative action

BY BROOKE

“Take hard classes and join every activity,” they said. “You will get tons of money for college!” they said. Whoever “they” is needs a reality check, because unless you are the child of a millionaire or an endangered species, do not count on rolling in scholarship money or financial aid. Like most governmental ideas, when affirmative action was first introduced into society, it had good intentions. U.S. Legal defines it as “the process of a business giving special rights of hiring or advancement to ethnic minorities to make up for past discrimination.” I have yet to discover what actually makes affirmative action constitutional? How does that not violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth

Amendment? When one is going out of one’s way to seek out individuals with racial preference in mind, THAT IS RACISM. In regards to college admittance and scholarships, this is an issue that heavily impacts a predominately Caucasian school like Wadsworth High. For example, a number of studies conducted by the Center for Equal Opportunity in Washington, D.C., concluded that severe reverse discrimination is taking place in a myriad of schools, from undergraduate to professional. At the University of Wisconsin, the Center found that the median composite SAT score for African Americans who were admitted was 150 points lower than for whites, and the Latino median SAT score was 100 points lower. Even if you get into a university, paying for it is a whole issue in itself. Search college scholarships. How many are inapplicable because of skin color? Diversity is indisputably beneficial. The means in which schools are attempting to achieve it, however, is not.

SENIORS: Should universities continue considering race as a factor into admissions and scholarships? “That is completely ridiculous for race to be considered at all! In the past, racial discrimination was a big issue, but all they are doing now is creating a new problem. When I apply to a school, I trust that they are going to consider my application on the same level as everyone else, regardless of what skin color everyone is.” -Lauren Muir “Yes because there is a direct correlation to different races and their average annual income. More college education for minorities could close that gap.” -Albert Falkenstein “No, it is not fair. I understand how everyone having an equal opportunity is good, but by using race as a factor, educational institutes are putting less emphasis on academics!” -Heather Rogers “Yes because, similar to academic standing, race is an aspect of life that has the ability to distinguish a person. It is something that gives people different perspectives, which leads individuals to accomplish certain things.” -Sonia Potter

January 2015 5 THE BRUIN O PINION 2 Addition of two hour delay causes controversy

OPINION BY GARY

With snow days limited and long winter months ahead, how do you deal with Ohio’s unpredictable winter weather? As a superintendent, do you study multiple weather reports and wait to call off school until the morning? Do you anticipate the worst and call off the night before? Or do you wait until the very last possible minute to call off school? There is an easy solution to this problem that the Wadsworth City Schools has adopted: The Two Hour Delay. There is a major difference in the way it feels when school starts a meager two hours later. In Ohio, the weather can change in the blink of an eye. Not only does a two hour delay allow students to sleep in a little bit longer, but it also allows them to travel to school when it is warmer and safer. On days when snow covers the ground, buses run late and it becomes a problem when the student parking lot is snow covered and people can not find the lines painted for

With road conditions like this, it would not only make travel miserable, but it would cause many people to be late to wherever they are going.

the parking spaces. Suddenly the amount of parking spaces shrinks, and students complain about not having a space. There are quite a few people who walk to school far distances. Even if you do get bundled up to walk to school, the air is too cold to walk in. “The thought of school being black and white, on or off is naive considering the options we have at our disposal. I love snow days; however, there are times we do not need the whole day off,” said Ross Thompson, 11. “I feel that we should use it

more, especially if the weather is supposed to get better by the time we would leave for school after the delay,” says Chris Byers, 11. Some students felt differently about the use of the two hour delay. “I think we should just be called off. I do not want to be here at 7:30, so I would not want to be here at 9:30,” said Kaitlin Murphy, 12. Ben Walton, 11, said, “We should just get the day off. To be honest, after having two hours off, what is the point in coming?”

Should the two hour delay be used more often?

Five things to leave in 2014; bring to 2015

OPINION BY NOAH

As the year expired, people all over the world kissed 2014 goodbye and welcomed 2015 with great excitement. With the old year going and the new year coming, here are five things that should come and five things that should go with it. First, out with the old. 1. Bae The word “bae” tops the chart as the number one thing to leave in 2014. I feel as if there are plenty of better nicknames to call your special someone; therefore, this should be easy for the lovers. Bae should be left in 2014 before anything else. “I think it is stupid to call someone you actually like your ‘bae’ because it is not meant to be serious, but I always call my friends my bae jokingly,” said Lindsay Carr, 9. 2. Relationship Goals Twitter sets an unreachable standard on the idea of a relationship. Relationships should not be based off materialistic items but rather from care and appreciation. The media makes it near impossible to please your boyfriend or girlfriend nowadays. 3. Bucket Hats Unless you are going on a fishing

trip, the bucket hat should be left in 2014. “My brothers and I only go out wearing bucket hats if we are about to catch a fat walleye. Other than that, I never wear a bucket hat,” said Conner Clark, 10. 4. Macklemore Haircuts The hipster haircut of the year was started by Macklemore, and teenage boys from everywhere jumped all over it. Half a shaved head and a comb over should be left to Miley Cyrus. 5. Surprise Porch Deliveries Once again, the idea of gifts, presents and food left on your porch as a surprise is an unrealistic expectation on how you should be treated. Ladies should settle for the mailman leaving the paper on the front porch and stop looking for Starbucks coffee, candy and Chipotle burritos. Out with the old and in with the new. Forgetting all these popular trends will help make 2015 a better year, along with introducing these amazing fads. 1. Tucked in Sweats Obviously tucking in your sweatpants into your socks has not reached its potential yet. This style is up and coming and will be seen all over the hallways and streets on teenage boys. “Tucking my sweats into my socks leaves me agile and prepared all day. Plus, it is a unique style that few can rock,” said Ryan Orr, 10. Remember it here, wrestlers set this trend of 2015. 2. The Tim Knipl Stache Nothing looks better on a man than

the thick mustache Tim Knipl grows for the wrestling season. People everywhere are trying to mirror his ‘stache, but I am not sure it can be done. 3. Cheap Gas Towards the end of the year, gas prices worked their way down to under two dollars for the first time in a long time. Cheap gas will also allow people to spend their money on other items of their choice. “I can finally say that my GPA is higher than the gas prices. Now I will get to buy more clothes with my extra money,” said Kassie Kirven, 12. 4. Snow Days There is not much to explain here. Every student loves a snow day. Having a day off from school to relax and catch up on your chores and other responsibilities is much needed. Plus, Leatherman Hill is the place to be when you want to have a good time sled riding. 5. Chipotle Price Drops With Chipotle becoming so popular within recent years, I think it is only fair to reward the customers with a drop in prices. Being one of the hot spots for teenagers with an appetite, Chipotle should make it easier for the people to enjoy their favorite meal without putting a dent in their pocket. Without a doubt, 2014 was a year to be remembered, but it also, in some ways, needs to be forgotten. These five little wrinkles can make for a great 2015. Be the first to hop on these future trends before every one else finds out about them too.

An Urban Legend

Urban Meyer may have just solidified himself as college football’s best coach

OPINION BY JAMIE

Urban Meyer now has three national championship rings to parade around the college football world. After defeating Oregon 42-20 in the first ever College Football Playoff Championship, he became only the second coach to win a championship at two different schools. Meyer has had a very successful career. Every place that he has been, he has had a lot of success. His career started at Bowling Green State University, where he was a combined 17-6 over his two seasons there. After his short stint at Bowling Green, he moved on to Utah. In his first season at Utah, Meyer went 10-2 and won the Liberty Bowl. Meyer’s second season was his first of two undefeated seasons as a coach. That year he won the Fiesta bowl, and his quarterback,

Alex Smith, was the first overall pick in the year’s upcoming draft. Like Bowling Green, Meyer only stayed at Utah for two years. He left Utah after being offered the coaching job at the University of Florida. It only took Meyer two seasons at Florida to win his first National Championship in 2006. Two years later, Meyer claimed his second National Championship. Meyer then stepped down from coaching Florida after the 2010-2011 season due to health issues. During this time, he joined ESPN as a broadcaster. After only a year out of coaching, Meyer accepted the head coaching job at The Ohio State University. In his first season at Ohio State, Meyer earned his second undefeated season, but was banned from post season play due to the tattoo scandal from the Jim Tressel era. In his second season, the Buckeyes were undefeated in the regular season, but lost in the Big Ten Championship game after a questionable fourth down play call. The Orange Bowl did not go his way, either, after Braxton Miller played most of the second half with a torn labrum.

It looked like his third season at Ohio State was doomed from the start. Potential Heisman trophy winner Braxton Miller tore his labrum again in camp. This led to a competition between red shirt freshman JT Barrett and red shirt sophomore Cardale Jones. The season looked especially over after a horrendous home loss against Virginia Tech. Then, Meyer rallied the troops to win the rest of their regular season games, but post season hope seemed gone after Barrett broke his ankle in the Michigan game. Urban’s next man-up mentality and “QB whisperer” skills showed when Cardale Jones stepped in. After a dismantling win over Wisconsin

For most of the student coaches, this is their first or second year coaching. Being in charge of six to seven kids can be challenging . Coaching itself is a hard thing to accomplish even as an adult. Some top qualities of being a coach are having a spirit of generosity, they have to see the best in others, have a high self esteem and are emotionally stable. Coaching takes a lot of responsibility and hard work. They put in a lot of work to try and make the kids better. Noah Murphy, 11, was asked why he wanted to

coach. “I had coached last year and had a great time,” he stated. With last year’s winning coaches graduating, that spot is open. The majority of the coaches are high school students and are going to do anything possible to become the next champions. When asked what his favorite thing to do at practice is, Austin Stull, 12, answered with, “I like watching my team scrimmage. That way, I am able to assess the problems and fix them in our next practice.” The season kicks off on the 28 of January with three teams having a double header. The season consists of seven games and 3 playoff games before the championship game. Practices are during the week days from 5:30 to 8 P.M. They are at all of the elementary schools as well as Central Intermediate and the two middle school gyms. When asked how he felt about the practice places and times Matt Beidler, 12, replied with, “I feel that the times are adequate for all the practices. I am involved with sports activities after school, so it is nice that the practices are later. As far as the practice places, I feel that most of them are bad. The gyms are dusty, and the schools are never unlocked, so usually, we have to wait for the janitor to unlock

in the Big Ten Championship game, Meyer and the team earned a playoff spot against Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide. Many people counted Ohio State out of this game, but Meyer’s coaching genius showed up again after his offense put up 42 points against one of, if not the best, defenses in the country. This win earned him a trip to his third National Championship game. Meyer had his hands full preparing for this game against the Heisman Trophy winner, Marcus Mariota, and the Oregon

Ducks. After Oregon flew down the field in their first drive, Meyer already had the Oregon offense figured out. After overcoming four turnovers, Meyer won his third National Championship 42-20. I do not know many coaches who can win a championship with their third string quarterback, so Meyer might be the only one. No matter what his challenge is, he always seems to beat it. Call him the best coach in college football.

Meyer celebrates his second championship in three years with Tim Tebow.

Rivalry between students BY CAMERON

City league basketball begins, with 13 out of the 20 coaches being high school students and five out of the nine teams having high school student coaches. All nine teams battle for the bragging rights to be named champions.

them. The only good practice places are the middle school and Overlook Elementary School.” There are lots of young high school coaches who put in lots of time. Mike Carris, 12, is a basketball player, and with all of his high school practices and games, still has the dedication to attend the youth practices. Carris is dedicated to being a coach so he can teach the kids to get buckets and have solid defense. He also wants to teach them the fundamentals of the game. The teams are named after

some college teams, such as Flashes, Zips and Raiders. The jerseys are being funded by companies with their logo and name on it. When asked what do he thinks about the jerseys being changed from professional teams to college teams, Zach Porter, 11, responded with, “I think that the uniform change was unnecessary and confusing.” These games are not all fun and games. Not only do the players take it seriously, the coaches are always looking for the best performance out of all the players.

A beginner’s guide to the Super Bowl BY CHASE PEGRIM

The most anticipated event of the year has arrived once again: the Super Bowl. The day that the two best teams in football get to square off is nearly here. Many are in it for the commercials, some in it for the food and of course there are the precious few that genuinely love the sport. The only question remaining is who will the champion be? The two teams squaring off this year will be the New England Patriots from the AFC and the Seattle Seahawks from the NFC. These two teams come as no surprise, Seattle being the defending champion and New England favored all season to win the AFC. New England has arguably one of the best offenses in NFL history, with future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady being the best post-season quarterback ever. Tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receiver Julian Edelman will be the key ingredients to picking apart the Seattle secondary. The Pats finished the season with a 12-4 record. They walk into the Super Bowl with a chip on their shoulder, coming off of an dominant 45-7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC championship. Seattle is the defending Super Bowl champion. The team is known for their defense, especially their secondary that has been dubbed the “Legion of Boom.” The Seahawks’ offense is also a force to be reckoned with. The Pats’ defense will have their hands full holding off all-star running back Marshawn Lynch throughout the night.

Super Bowl XLIX will kick off at 6:30pm EST on Feb. 1 between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Both teams finished the season with 12-4 records.

The Seahawks’ greatest advantage may be that they already know how to win. Seattle crushed the Denver Broncos in last year’s Super Bowl by a score of 43-8. However, Seattle has struggled as of late. Giving up five turnovers against Green Bay in the NFC Championship nearly ended the season for the Seahawks. A last minute comeback that resulted in an overtime win kept the Seahawks’ season alive. With the NFL season coming to a close on the first day of February, much is at stake. With one team looking to defend their title and another with a quarterback looking to solidify his legacy as one of the best to ever play, the game is sure to be filled with excitement. My final score prediction: Seattle Seahawks 20, New England Patriots 35.

Who do you think will win the Super Bowl? Hands down the Patriots. It comes down to who loves this great country more. Our founding fathers would agree with me as I say the Patriots will win. - Luke Smith, 11

I don’t like the Patriots. That means the Seahawks will win. They are not really as good as the Browns, but I will root for them anyway. - Dan Horvat, 10

The Seahawks, because they never lose their pressure or intensity, even when they are losing. - Tom Andrews, 12

The Patriots, because they are cheaters. - Jenny Reynolds, 11

Sports Briefs Wrestling

In their senior night match against Green, the boys handled the Bulldogs 650. That win moved their record to 10-0 overall. They also won their 62nd straight Suburban League match and secured their 23rd straight Suburban League Title. Their next task is the “G.I.T.”, where they will face number 2 in the nation St. Paris Graham.

Boys Basketball

The boys rebounded with a nice win last Friday at Copley 67-60. They then dropped a tough game to Hudson 56-53. Up next for the Grizzlies is a trip to Tallmadge on Friday.

Swimming

Both teams recently competed in a meet against Copley. The girls lost 128-42, and the boys lost a tough one 87-83. Both teams have a 3-2 record in league and 4-3 record overall.

Gymnastics

The girls recently defeated 3 teams at Wooster High School. They had a score of 128.85, Medina had a score of 128.3, Wooster with 126.8 and Triway with 108.45. Their next event is a road meet at Sandy Valley High School.

COLLEGE

Wadsworth graduate Eric Golz has become the head girls soccer coach at Illinois State University. He recently coached at the University of Maryland.

Seniors look to make final lasting impression

BY JOHN MERHAR

For the seniors at Wadsworth High this year, they have one more chance to prove their worth and leave their mark. Seniors from the winter sports spectrum will be featured and take the reader behind the scenes. BOWLING Brian Auffenberg, 12, has bowled for 13 years, and would not trade it for anything in the world. Bowling can get strenuous at times, and the key to all competition is to just have fun. “For all future Wadsworth bowlers, I would say just try and do your best because nobody is perfect,” Brian said. He hopes to be successful in the near future, with his sights set on a college degree from the University of Akron, majoring in

Chemical Engineering. One thing is certain: Auffenberg has laid the framework for future bowlers to have successful careers. BOYS BASKETBALL “Standing in at six foot five, center, senior, number 20, Joooooey Johnsooon.” Johnson has called “ball” life since the 5th grade. He says he resembles Cavs guard/forward Mike Miller due to his ability to be a key piece on the floor, and occasionally step out and hit some threes. “I always put the team first no matter what and would do anything possible for my teammates,” he says. Johnson will attend the University of Akron next year, but most importantly, he hopes to win a Suburban League title to use as a building block for years to come.

BOYS SWIMMING Mason Hicks, 12, has loved his time at Wadsworth, especially being a member of the boys swim team for the past 4 years. He swims the 200 medley relay, 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free relay. Hicks says, “Getting up early stinks. I usually find myself extremely tired, and my body is often times dragging behind my mind.” He says his biggest motivation is seeing other swimmers compete at states and districts, which motivates him to reach their level of competition. Hicks will attend the University of Akron next fall and will major in Art Education. GIRLS SWIMMING Senior Haley Smith has heralded the pool for the past 6 years and has had the most fun as a member of the high school

squad. She races the 200, 500, 200 free relay and 400 relay. “The best thing about swimming is the fact you can eat an outrageous amount of food and not get fat.” She also said she wants to be remembered for her “southern hospitality and good looks.” Smith will be attending Kent State University, and the number one thing she will miss is her teammates. GYMNASTICS Callie Almes has enjoyed her time at Wadsworth and said her favorite moments have been as a part of the gymnastics team. As a member of the team, she competes on the bars, beam and vault. “One thing I would advise for future gymnasts and high school students is to be nice to everyone,

try and make as many friends as possible and have a lot of school spirit.” Almes will miss all of the friends but mostly her team. Whether she attends Kent State University, University of Mount Union or Slippery Rock University, she will always remember her days as a Grizzly. One recurring topic during the interviews was the fact that they will miss Wadsworth. Many Suburban League schools view Wadsworth as “Wadsworthless,” but these students prove why Wadsworth is the complete opposite. All five students agreed that this school will stay close to their hearts wherever their calling in life may be. They truly exemplify the phrase that all students should live by: “Once a Grizzly, always a Grizzly.”

What has been your favorite moment as a Wadsworth athlete?

Brian, 12 “Placing second at the MLK Day tournament last year.”

Joey, 12 “My shot against Medina in the second round of playoffs.”

Mason, 12 “Winning the Suburban League title last spring.”

Haley, 12 “The feeling you get after you know you swam as hard as you could.”

Death from a broken heart? BY CHARLOTTE BOLAND

It turns out that the pain of a breakup can prove to be more fatal than anyone ever thought. Scientists have proven that the ache in one’s heart when a loved one dies can actually lead to death. The condition that leads to this demise is called Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy. Also called stressinduced cardiomyopathy, this disease affects women more often than it does men. This condition is caused when someone suffers from excessive amounts of emotional stress. When one falls victim to severe emotional stress, a person’s body releases a lot of hormones. This can lead to one’s heart going into shock and losing all function. It looks like a heart attack, but it is actually the heart failing to work. This untimely death can be brought on by a multitude of events, including breakups, deaths of loved ones or romantic rejection. It can also be brought on by positive surprises, such as winning the lottery. Broken Heart Syndrome is commonly misdiagnosed as a heart attack because the symptoms and test results are similar. Unlike a heart attack, there is no evidence of blocked heart arteries during the course of this disease. In Broken Heart Syndrome, a part of one’s heart temporarily

enlarges and does not pump blood well, while the rest of your heart functions normally or with even more forceful contractions. Researchers are just starting to learn the causes, as well as how to diagnose and treat the ailment. The most common signs of broken heart syndrome is angina, chest pain and shortness of breath. The term “Broken Heart Syndrome” came to be after researchers realized that many of the people suffering from this disease were also suffering from some form of grief. These events of grief, shock or stress can trigger one’s sympathetic nervous system, which is also the fight-or-flight mechanism. There is also a reason why Broken Heart Syndrome called Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. It is named after a Tako-Tsubo, which

in Japan is a pot used for catching sea creatures. Researchers who examined the heart after it had suffered from this disease noticed that the left ventricle looked just like one of these pots. Mason Miller, 11, was asked how he felt knowing that you could die of a broken heart. He responded, “I did not really know that could happen to people.” This seems to be a common theme among people, and the bad news is that the more uninformed people are about this condition, the more often people will succumb to its consequences. The good news is that many people are becoming aware of this condition, which will hopefully save people from suffering or even dying from this ailment as more stressed people come face to face with Broken Heart Syndrome.

Electronic devices cause negative impact on sleep

Most often, it is phones and computers that prevent a person from going to bed at night and getting the recommended hours of sleep. BY MADISON QUINN

Most people find themselves not getting enough sleep or a good night’s sleep. It could be because of an electronic device sitting in the bedroom at night. Studies show that sleeping in the same room as an electronic device has a negative impact on the amount of sleep children get. With bigger and better technology in today’s world, children are more apt to use electronic devices. These devices are keeping children up, making it harder for them to put down the phone or computer and

go to bed. Researchers found that children who sleep with televisions or other smallscreened devices in their bedrooms end up getting less sleep than children without those electronics in the room. People are getting 40% less sleep than what is recommended which is ultimately tied to other issues, including obesity and academic performance. As the brain revs up, its electrical activity increases and neurons start to race, which is the exact opposite of what should be happening before sleep. The

physical act of picking up your device makes the body tense which is not what the body should be doing before sleep. As the body gets stressed, it can go into a fight-or-flight response. As a result, cortisol, a stress hormone, is released, creating a situation hardly conducive to sleep. The glow produced by a device is also not good for sleeping patterns. Although people may think the device screen is small, it still produces half the amount of light a normal room’s light would produce. The amount of light from these devices passes through the retina into a part of the hypothalamus (the area of the brain that controls several sleep activities) and delays the release of the sleep-inducing hormone, melatonin. The influx of smart phones, tablets and other electronic devices has made children and teens more prone to poor sleep habits. The artificial light emitted by these devices signals our brain to stay awake, as it grows accustomed to thinking light equates to daytime. Seven to nine hours of sleep

is recommended per night for teenagers, yet most get about five to eight hours of sleep. It is especially important for a teenager to get enough sleep because of their growing bodies, which need to be replenished to maintain good health and

stay active during school and extracurricular activities. If getting a good night’s sleep is a major struggle for you, it is best to put down the phone or computer an hour before bed so the body has time to relax and catch some z’s.

Celebrity Instagrams invade 2014 BY SARAH ELFERS

Instagram was full of selfies and celebrities in 2014. For us, 200 is a lot of likes to get on a picture, for Kim Kardashian, try 2 million! This is a look at ten different celebrities and their most liked post on Instagram of the year. 1. Kim Kardashian This photo of Kim kissing Kanye at their wedding in Italy has gotten 2.44 million likes (and counting), making it the most liked picture on Instagram ever.

2. Justin Bie ber With the caption “Love the way you look at me” this picture of Bieber and his on-again, off-again girlfriend has racked up 1.9 million likes since the beginning of 2014. This picture is just shy of beating out Kim Kardashian’s picture for the most liked picture out there.

3. Ariana Grande She posted this pic with Miley Cyrus at the VMAs and got 1.7 million likes.

8. Cameron Dallas He posted this while getting ready for a photo shoot a nd was just short of 1 million with 945k likes. 6. Harry Styles Harry posted this bizarre picture of his slippers with the caption as simply “Legos.” It has gotten 1.23 million likes since it was posted.

4. Selena Gomez Selena posted this gorgeous picture three months back and has gotten 1.55 million likes.

7. Taylor Swift Taylor posted this picture of her dressed as a “pegacorn” on Halloween this year and it’s just short of the #6 spot.

Top ten cringe-worthy songs of 2014 BY BRADY EASTERLING

2014 had its fair share of good music, but it also had a ton of bad music.Among all the bad songs, there were a particular few that plagued one’s ears anytime one entered a car and turned the radio on. Here arethetop 10 worst songs of2014. 10: “L.A. Love (La La)”, Fergie Fergie’s “comeback” didn’t go quite as planned with the release of “L.A. Love.” The song’s lyrics are composed of little more than rambling, as the former Black Eyed Pea lists random city names. The “La La La” refrain doesn’t help the song either, and serves only as an annoyance. Nothanks, Fergie. 9:“Brooklyn Girls,” Katey Shaw Shaw caught heat for her terribly misinformedrepresentationofBrooklynin her song “Brooklyn Girls.” The lyrics talk about “running the island,” even though Brooklyn is a burrow. The song’s lyrics are general, rhyming “headphones” with “brown stones.” If there was a reward for uninspired, poorly researched song lyrics, “Brooklyn Girls” would takethe cake. 8. “Black Widow,” Iggy Azalea feat Iggy Azalea could have picked a more inspiring song to follow up her summer single “Fancy,” but instead she released “Black Widow,” which is hardly more than a lazier con of Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse.” “Black Widow” is lazy and derivative.

10. Demi Lovato The tenth most-liked Instagram picture of 2014 was taken by Demi with the hashtag “#tealhairdontcare” and got 835k likes.

5. Kendall Jenner “A selfie that made the internet go crazy,” this photo has gotten 1.53 million likes since it was posted.

7. “Summer,” CalvinHarris Not only was “Summer” released after the end of summer, but it was a messy mesh of instruments coupled with poor lyrics. The excessive instrumentals with harps and pianos combat the basic lyrics of this otherwise generic banger. 6.“Wiggle,”JasonDuerulofeatSnoop Dogg Wiggle starts offpoorlywithwhat sounds like a discount record player playing at the beginning of the song. One of the main lines of the song is “I got one question. How do you fit all that... in them jeans?” The real question is how one fits so much mediocrity into one song. Also, just for future reference, “Wiggle” doesn’t rhymewith“Littlebittle.” 5. “All About That Bass,” Meghan Trainor “All About That Bass” has plagued the radio’s top charts for too long. A song dedicatedtomakingskinnygirlsfeelbadand supportstheobjectifyingofwomentoappeal to men, “All About That Bass” is annoying to listen to. Not only is the subject matter bad, but the upbeat rhythms combined with the forced rapping adds up to an unfortunate single. 4. “Sun Daze,” FloridaGeorgiaLine “Sun Daze” sounds like what would happen if Florida Georgia Line made a song for Miley Cyrus, except this one might actually be too low-brow for the ex-Disney star. The terrible sexual innuendos are nauseating at the least. Country should stick

tocountry. 3.“Masterpiece,”JessieJ. “Masterpiece” is anything but. It is wildly over sung and comes off as selfaggrandizing, albeit undeserved. The song is about how one doesn’t make any mistakes in the public eye, although ironically, Jessie J. has no real place in the publiceye, sothesongisanembarrassment if anything. 2.“LiterallyI Can’t,”Play& Skillz “Literally I Can’t” glorified rape culture at a time when college campuses were reevaluating their policies on rape. The song talks about frat boys telling women to “shut the up” when they don’t take tequila shots or hook up with their friends, and “I don’t wanna hear ‘No.” “Literally I Can’t,” asongaboutcollegerape, literallycouldnot be any more offensive, and deserves to be oneof theworst songs of 2014. 1.“Rude,”Magic! “Rude” is the song that has forever assailed my ears ever since its debut. Once “Rude” starts playing, I am filled with anger as soon as I hear it. Not only is the sanitized reggae-fusion offensive to the ears, but the lyrics are utter garbage. The song details a man being rejected by his girlfriend’s father when he asks to marry hisdaughter.Hetalksabouthow“rude”he is.Really,rude?Howaboutheart-breaking, soul-crushingorcruel?Rudeisreservedfor people who text at a green light, not for oppressivefathers.

“I like Selena’s picture, she’s smoking hot,” says Brody Brandyberry, 10. “I for sure like Ariana Grande’s picture, their affection for each other is elegant,” Brock Swartzbaugh, 11.” “Her dress is perfect, Kim and Kanye are perfect, she is PERFECT,” said Laney Schoonover, 11. 2015 should be filled with a lot of celebrity selfies to compete with these instafamous snapshots from the year of 2014.

9. Ansel Elgort This ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ actor took this selfie holding ice cream for 887k.

January 2015 17 Y ear I n R eview THE BRUIN Top ten sports stories told in 2014 By dylan bowers

As we enter the new year, many of us tend to look back on all the great stories of the previous year. 2014 brought us all phenomenal memories in the world of sports, so let us take a look at the top ten sports stories of 2014. 10. Michigan Football Program Michigan has one of the most elite programs in all of college football, but 2014 was not a good year for them. A Brady Hoke led program has taken a step back every year since he became head coach in 2011. After a disappointing 5-7 record in 2014, Hoke was fired and replaced with Jim Harbaugh. 9. California Chrome’s Journey California Chrome attempted to become the first horse since 1978 to win the triple crown in horse racing. After winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, California Chrome ran out of gas at Belmont, where he would have captured an elusive triple crown had he won. Many were disappointed afterwards, including the co-owner Steve Coburn, who made angry comments on national television calling out horse owners who ran

their horse at Belmont to beat California Chrome. Richard Sherman 8. Postgame Interview We all know Richard Sherman; the fiery, energetic cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks. In the NFC Championship game last year, Sherman made a play that otherwise could have been a game tying touchdown pass from 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to wide receiver Michael Crabtree. Sherman deflected the pass, which was then intercepted by linebacker Malcolm Smith in the endzone, which sealed the victory and a ticket to the Super Bowl in New York City. A fired up and energetic Sherman screamed at Fox’s Erin Andrews just minutes after the game was over, “Well, I’m the best corner in the game. When you try me with a sorry receiver like (Michael) Crabtree, that’s the result you are going to get. Don’t you ever talk about me.” 7. Derek Jeter Retires 2014 marked the end to one of the greatest players of his generation, Derek Jeter. Jeter announced in February of last year that after the season, he would hang up the spikes. When the Yankees went on the road, Jeter was given a gift of some

type from the Yankees opponent. Jeter was a career .310 hitter and had more than 3,000 career hits. 6. Madison Bumgarner’s Unforgettable October The San Francisco Giants had another deep postseason run that resulted in their third World Series title in the past five seasons. The Giants were able to win it all with the dominate performance in October by Bumgarner. Bumgarner did it all by starting games one and five of the World Series, as well as closing game seven. Bumgarner totaled 21 innings, 17 strikeouts and just one run allowed in the World Series. 5. NFL and Domestic Violence The NFL had many problems with domestic violence this past year, such as former Ravens Running Back Ray Rice striking his fiance in a casino elevator and Panthers Defensive End Greg Hardy also getting in legal trouble over assaulting a woman. Other cases included were the case of Vikings Running Back Adrian Peterson disciplining his son with a switch and Cardinals Running Back Jonathon Dwyer throwing a shoe at his then 18-month old child. The NFL took many shots for the handling

Top ten new species crawl into 2014 BY ADAM BENDEL

In the year of 2014, many species were discovered across the globe. Mixed in with these species are the top 10 new species discovered in the previous year. 10. Three unknown new mushrooms: These mushrooms were found in a place one would not expect to find new species of anything in. A group of scientists picked up a package of porcini mushrooms to test in their lab. After testing them, they determined that 3 of these mushrooms belong to no known species, making them such a fascinating find. 9. R. Nicolifera: Every day plants absorb nutrients from the soil, but the Nicolifera has a different taste setting itself apart from the other species. This plant prefers absorbing nickle, hence the name, Nicolifera. Although there are similar plants, it has quite a larger appetite than the others, absorbing 1,000 parts per million more than any other plant. 8. Litarachna Lopezae: The Lopezae is a marine mite found off the coast of Puerto Rico. The researches who found this new species decided to name it after Jennifer Lopez. They claimed that her songs kept the researches in a good mood when they were writing their explanation letters about the discovery. 7. Cape-wearing dolphin: Although this strange dolphin

is considered a Humpback Dolphin, there are a few characteristics separating it from the others. It has a lighter underside while having a darker back. The darker back makes the creature look like it is wearing a cape, hence the name, Cape-wearing Dolphin. 6. Sclerobunus steinmanni: While exploring in Colorado’s Cave of the Winds, Researcher David Steinmann discovered a new species of daddy longlegs. This type of long-leg has a distinctive gold-orange color with a larger body and shorter legs. 5. A. Diversifamilia: When people think of insects, they rarely think of how they may possibly marry. This Unique snail does just that. Many snails are hermaphrodites. This means there would be no need for marriage due to asexual reproduction, but these snails are different. They have the idea of marriage making them a unique species. 4. Isabel’s Saki: This particular species is a monkey that is apart from all the rest. This monkey has an extreme amount of hair compared to all other monkeys. This was a common told tale, resulting in the naming of this monkey. 3. John Lennon Tarantula: Discovered in the Amazon, the

It is the tiniest specimen to date. In order to catch this creature, it required 5,616 traps and several nights. The hunt alone gives it a reason to be one of the top new species. 1. Atlantic Coast Leopard Frog: This creature gives people a new reason to visit the Yankee’s stadium. The wetlands surrounding the stadium house this new frog. Instead of a normal croak, it has a chuckling sound. Their uniqueness gives them the top place in the top 10 new species of 2014. 2014 was a great year, and these new species made it even greater. These fascinating discoveries were a great addition to the past year.

of the cases, but they cleaned up their acts and started dealing with the issues the right way. 4. NBA bans Donald Sterling Donald Sterling was the former owner of one of the Los Angeles Clippers. Sterling had owned the Clippers for 33 years before Commissioner Adam Silver banned him in April after TMZ released an audio recording of Sterling making racist comments to his girlfriend. Players who were infuriated with Sterling protested him. Clippers players wore their warmup shirts inside out so the Clippers name could not be seen, which sent a shockwave throughout the NBA and other teams soon followed the new trend. 3. Sochi Winter Olympics The Olympics are always a hit when that time comes around, and the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics were just as good as anticipated. 88 nations and 2,873 athletes participated in the 16 day games. Host country Russia led the overall medal count with 33, and the United States took second with 28. Rounding out the top five was Norway (26), Canada (25), and the Netherlands (24). 2. College Football Playoff 2014 was the first year of the College Football playoff, and

it did live up to the hype. The four teams to be selected to play for the National Championship were Alabama, Oregon, Florida State, and Ohio State. Alabama played Ohio State and lost in an entertaining 42-35 battle. Oregon took down Florida State in an allaround dominating performance on both sides of the ball, as the score shows, 59-20. Oregon and Ohio State played for the National Championship, and the Buckeyes impressed many who thought Oregon was a much better team than they showed in the Championship. Ohio State cruised to a 42-20 victory to become the first National Champions in the new College Football Playoff format. 1. LeBron Returns Home LeBron James, the best player in the NBA, chose to leave the Miami Heat team that had gone to four straight NBA Finals, to return to unfinished business in Cleveland. James’ decision to return to Cleveland shocked people around the country, but not in Northeast Ohio. James announced his return to Cleveland in an open letter to Sports Illustrated. LeBron’s decision to return to Cleveland will shape the NBA landscape for years to come.

2014 ‘Internet Breaking’Trends BY BECCA REEDER

In 2014, America’s embarrassing and sometimes unfortunate goal was to “Break the Internet”. Whether it was a celebrity looking for something to keep their names in the headlines or a challenge raising awareness, it went viral. Social media users will agree, the internet was “broken” for most of 2014. 10. Anything “Frozen” When the movie Frozen came out, people knew it was going to be a hit. No one quite expected it would flood their Twitter and Vine feed like this. From remakes of the popular songs or memes, people were talking about Frozen. The movie made its release in 2013, but continues to be popular on social media in 2015. 9. Ellen’s Oscar Selfie During 2014, Ellen partook in the raging, “selfie”. The talk show host’s picture included Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and several others. 8. Lebron James Returns Not only did James break the internet, he broke the entire social media world. Fans drove and waited outside of the gates of his Bath home. The first Cavaliers game was attended by the biggest celebrities including, Justin Bieber, Beyonce and Jay-Z. 7. #AlexFromTarget The unlikely heartthrob of many girls came from a picture taken by a teenage girl of a cashier. Alex ended up having his picture all over Twitter and Instagram. 6. Flappy Bird In the beginning of 2014, the world was ruled by a simple, yet addicting game called Flappy Bird. The world was frustrated with how difficult yet easy the game was. Players took to Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr with rage. The game has since been taken off of the iTunes app store. 5. iPhone 6 and 6+ release

People always go crazy when a new Apple product is released. There was no exception when the new version of the iPhone is announced. But this year, it came with complaints. Buyers showed the rest of the world the bending of the phone. 4. Taylor Swift’s new album The pop culture world took cover in early August when Swift began hinting at the release of a new album. In the first week alone the album was bought 1.287 million times. This is not quite surprising for Swift, but the fact so many songs were on the Billboard top 40 made it unbelievable. 3. The Celebrity Nude Photo Leak iPhone users began to wonder if was iCloud safe. Numerous accounts of private photos were distributed and put all over the media. It was hard not to see. Victims included, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and Rihanna. 2. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Even people who do not spend a lot of time on the internet could not escape the slightly annoying, but worth while, Ice Bucket Challenge. The challenge consisted of people dumping water and nominating others to do so too. Many celebrities took place in this as well as the faculty and most students of our school. 1. Kim Kardashian’s PAPER spread

It is no surprise this was number one. Kardashian’s goal with the picture was to “break the internet.” Kardashian’s scandalous photos spread rapidly across the internet and left some people amused and many disgusted. 2014 left the world annoyed, amused and confused. Internet breaking things happen everyday, and I will be there to see them. Let us see what trends come in 2015.

Junk of the Month

Senior Corey is this month’s winner for ‘Junk of the Month.’ Corey’s 1999 Honda Accord has been nicknamed “Martha” by Corey and his friends. Martha has many dents and mechanical issues. To start things off, Martha has a gas leak, so Corey can only fill up his tank up to a quarter. Another issue is the passenger cannot even open up the passenger door unless the back passenger door is open. It is also very noisy due to Martha’s inefficient muffler. To top things off, the muffler fell off the other day, and it is currently attached to the car with zip ties.
