Something Different
For those who are seeking something different from a church service. We start with homemade cakes and drinks and then move into a period of praising God. The theme is linked into a secular song. We finish with some more praise and some prayers. Individual prayers for healing are available at the end of the service.

The Vicar Writes . . . . . As we start a new year it is natural to look back so we can look forward. I think God has gradually been putting in foundations over the last few years, preparing the base in the Benefice for growth. We have listened and responded, not always getting it right initially but we seemed to have arrived where God has wanted us, with weekly mission activities based at Balby and monthly alternative worship at different times and days at Wadworth. Bishop Peter is coming to take a service at 6pm on 26th February at St John the Baptist, Wadworth to celebrate the formation of the Benefice. The service will be followed by a faith supper.
everyone to answer God’s call to change, to respond.
We arrive at the start of a new year having been through the wonderful celebration of the birth of Jesus. I am particularly struck this year by the response of people in the story to the call of God. Mary, apparently unprepared to be a mum yet she says yes to the call of God to be the mother of Jesus. The rough and ready Shepherds called by God to go to Bethlehem to find a new born King. The Magi, called by God via a star to find a long promised King who will change everything, John the Baptist called by God to prepare the way for Jesus, to do something different, commences an act of repentance - water Baptism, the chance to change the direction of your life. Perhaps you may be interested in helping at the “Cups and Cake” coffee shop where we provide free drinks and a variety of refreshments between 10 and 12 on a Tuesday. Many come who are hungry, just glad that someone will talk to them and help them. It has become a place of physical and spiritual refreshment for many.
Some may be asking “What about St Katherines, Loversall?” Well there are some emerging ideas to do a centre of pilgrimage and festivals. More will follow as further information becomes available. There are also a number of facilities improvements that need to be thought through at Loversall to make the church fit for use in the 21st century. God calls us to participate, to be part of the body of Christ, to join in God’s mission, His plan for this Benefice. What is God calling who to do?
Perhaps you may be interested in helping at St Johns Community Friendship Group on a Thursday between 10am and 3pm. It’s a great place where we are tackling one of the Continued over . . . . . . . . .

great problems of the 21st century loneliness. Loneliness makes mental health worse, makes people feel isolated. Perhaps you have some ideas to widen what we can offer.
Perhaps you feel God is calling you to do something else, perhaps you want to start a group, well come and talk to the vicar! Christmas is a great celebration of the birth of Jesus, and God called many to participate, we know about them because they said YES, can you say YES? God may have called others in the Christmas story, but we don’t know about them because they didn’t respond. Don’t be a non responder and miss the adventure that God is calling you to - participate! Say YES to God and be part of the adventure.
We need help with youth work. Both getting young people to events in Bessacarr and also long term about setting up groups locally. We also have an opportunity to help Balby Carr secondary school with a mentoring programme. Worth Unlimited is a Christian Youth Work charity and they offer training to enable volunteers to mentor young people in school who have problems. Can you spare 2 hours a month? Is God calling you to this work?

Christmas Fayre A big thank you to all those who supported the Christmas Fayre held at St. John the Baptist, Wadworth. For all those who couldn’t make it you missed a treat!
Your generosity in your giving and support is very much appreciated. For all those who shared the morning with us, it made a great start to the Christmas season.
It was such a pleasant occasion and our new church layout was perfect for people to be able to move around and chat.
Don’t throw those unwanted Christmas gifts away, I have already started collecting items for the Easter Market - thank goodness we have a big attic for storing things!
All the stalls did well and all the raffle prizes were claimed.
Once more a big thank you to you all.
Brenda Sharpe
You will be pleased to know that we raised £740.00, which is a record.
Christmas Hamper Raffle A very big thank you to everyone who participated in any way towards making this year’s draw such a success. Yet another record was set as we raised £335.00 towards parish funds.

Poets Corner The Garden Year January brings the snow, Makes our feet and fingers glow. February brings the rain, Thaws the frozen lake again. March brings breezes, loud and shrill, To stir the dancing daffodil. April brings the primrose sweet, Scatters daisies at our feet. May brings flocks of pretty lambs Skipping by their fleecy dams. June brings tulips, lilies, roses, Fills the children’s hands with posies. Hot July brings cooling showers, Apricots and gillyflowers. August brings the sheaves of corn, Then the harvest home is borne. Warm September brings the fruit; Sportsmen then begin to shoot. Fresh October brings the pheasant; Then to gather nuts is pleasant. Dull November brings the blast; Then the leaves are whirling fast. Chill December brings the sleet, Blazing fire and Christmas treat. Sara Coleridge

From the Diocese The Archdeacon of Doncaster writes . . .
watching and being prepared is vital to Christian living.
Waiting and Wanting The Access credit card once coined the strapline, “Takes the waiting out of wanting.” Have it now – pay later: convenience for most, credit trap for some, consumerist tendency for us all. Our material and financial wants position themselves as gods. As Christmas comes round, the retail industry goes into overdrive. “Wanting” comes into its own. We all want Christmas, of course – the presents, the family, the celebrations, the holiday season, and, above all, the message of Jesus’ birth. But what about the waiting? Just before Christmas we have Advent, which is the Christian season of waiting: four weeks or so of self-examination, preparation and expectation, before we celebrate Jesus’ birth. Advent teaches us to value the waiting, as a time to prepare our hearts and lives to be ready for Jesus at Christmas. Waiting,
17
The waiting only increases our joy when Christmas day is revealed, and we celebrate the greatest of all stories – Jesus, the Messiah, God’s Son, our Lord: born in a stable, laid in a manger, worshipped by angels, adored by shepherds, visited by wise men. We mark the Advent season at the start of our Christian Year, because watching and waiting, rather than wanting and getting, come first in God’s economy. The Old Testament Scriptures prepared God’s people for the fulfilment of God’s plan. God’s promises to Abraham, Moses and the Prophets spoke of wonderful things, but they were kept waiting for hundreds of years. Still they hoped and waited before Jesus arrived. As we prepared for Christmas, we too were preparing ourselves, and waiting for a future beyond December 25th. Jesus will return, glorious, at the end of time. He commanded us to watch and wait expectantly, because even Christmas doesn’t deliver everything we want. Despite our songs of “peace and good will”, the world remains a place of strife and tears, our lives remain fragile and mortal.
Only when Jesus returns at the end of time will all our wants be satisfied. Our Christmas joy will only be complete when God’s new age dawns, when sin, sorrow and death will end. The earliest Christians used to say, “Maranatha!” – “O Lord, come!” The Bible ends with Jesus’ final recorded words, “I am coming soon.” We could want nothing better. There can be no true wanting without waiting, because what we most need is to be for ever with Jesus, which is infinitely worth waiting for. Don’t take the waiting out of wanting, because our waiting helps us to want the very best. Value the waiting, not as impatient frustration, but as a time to prepare and be ready for the joy that was ours at Christmas, and then for ever when Jesus returns.

. . . and from further afield . . Changes for religious broadcasting at the BBC The former Labour minister James Purnell, who is the BBC’s head of radio and education, is to take on responsibility for its religious affairs programming. BBC Director General Tony Hall said that the decision meant the BBC was taking "one of the big issues of our times" seriously. The BBC seems set to diversify its religious programming, with increased multi-faith coverage, to better reflect the “role of religion in modern Britain”. Director General Tony Hall, Lord Hall of Birkenhead, has said he will soon invite religious leaders to a round table to discuss how the broadcaster can improve on its existing output. A senior executive will also be appointed to design new programme concepts alongside what is currently delivered, such as Songs of Praise and Thought for the Day.
