The gift of blood donations CALLING ALL SUPERHEROES! WE NEED YOUR BLOOD! Most of us by now are familiar with the Red Cross and the benefits of blood donations for our fellow humans. What most of us, myself included, may not realize is that pet blood donation is a real thing and they need blood donors just as much as us humans. As with human blood supplies, animals in emergency situations rely on hospitals to have a ready supply of the right blood type, in the right amount, at the right location when it’s needed. Cancer treatment, severe injuries, treatment for autoimmune disorders and heat stroke are a few of the conditions that would require a blood transfusion. Heat stroke is especially frequent in these summer months and supplies are taxed heavily during this time. Blood donations are always welcome at the Portland’s Dove Lewis Blood Bank. Dove Lewis says the donation process is quick, easy, and painless for both the canine donor and the human companion. Blood donations need to come from medium-to-large dogs (Greyhounds are revered as excellent donors due to their naturally athletic red blood cell count), but they don’t need to be a particular breed or type. Dogs simply need to be: at least 55 pounds between 1-6 years old current on vaccines, generally healthy good-natured about the donation process. The blood bank will ask volunteers to commit to being regular donors for two years, with at least four but no more than six donations each year. In return, donors receive annual blood tests, exams, health screenings, and discounts on some products. At each donation, they also get a treat, a new toy and a huge helping of gratitude from all his/her furry companions. WWW.WAGTOMYHEART.COM

Everyone has their own love story. Some are similar and others may be completely different. I’d dare to say our story is 100% unique. I was a single mom of a very young child early on in my life. We lived in a college town where people my age were attending fraternity parties and tailgating at football games. While I did partake in some of the fun it wasn’t often. Once my little one was in bed I wanted to socialize with “adults” but alas it wasn’t an option. What about this new thing called chat rooms??? Could that be the key to being home for my daughter but still scratch that itch for some adult interaction? Not having a ton of money, I charged an IBM computer and waited for it to arrive at my door. The day the box came I was so excited but had to contain myself until the little one was in bed. I figured out how to get online and then was off to find a chat room. If you aren’t familiar how the way chat rooms worked back in the 90s, you have a group of say thirty folks in a room. You can group chat the whole room or have side chats with individuals. To start off I didn’t say much aside from gazing at people’s profiles that is until I saw this one.

His name was Tragedys, yet his profile picture portrayed 100% opposite of that. I took a chance and private messaged him. “What’s so tragic?” I said. His reply “Nothing, it’s just a great conversation starter”! That it was as we talked for weeks, which turned into months, and months turned into years.

Within those years lots of things happened in both our lives, but there was this constant nagging feeling he might be the true “one” if it wasn’t for this distance. I couldn’t know for sure until I met him face to face. My family and friends thought I was bonkers for even considering flying over to meet a man in a different country regardless of how long we had been talking. Again, this whole chat room stuff was very fresh so there was a lot of skepticism how real this all could be. The day was here! I was going to meet this guy that I believed I knew so well but was it his true self? Were my feelings real or just some fairytale I was living? That’s what I was there to find out.

Seven years had passed since I had met this man online and he was about to step off a plane without a returning ticket. Ten days after he landed, we planned a potluck for friends and family to meet this virtual man. What they didn’t know was we were secretly planned to be married that day. As we celebrate our 14th year of marriage I’d say it was and continues to be our Fairytale.
