High quality qualifications range from certificates, diplomas and degrees to graduate and postgraduate qualifications. Our new Master of Management can be undertaken with an optional endorsement in Business, Hospitality, Information Technology, or Health in order to tailor your studies. The main goal of the institute is to create workready graduates who have the tools to become successful in their chosen field, are satisfied yet challenged in their careers, and able to contribute to their local economy. graduate profile Reece Goodley
Certificate in Agriculture and Farm Maintenance “I love going to work every day. I love being outdoors, being with the animals. And I love providing for my family.” So says Reece Goodley, Certificate in Agriculture and Farm Maintenance graduate. After taking care of his daughter until she was two years old, it was time for him to enter the job market again. His wife handed him a prospectus from Waiariki Institute of Technology, and after researching his options, Reece chose to study toward an agriculture qualification where he quickly became an exceptional student and a natural in the field of agriculture. For work experience, Reece was placed on the local farm of Kevin Harrison which includes 400 hectares and 1,100 dairy cows. “I have a lot of time for Kevin. He took a leap of faith with me,” Reece says. Reece’s tutor admits that Kevin was hesitant at first to take on Reece due to the student’s inexperience, but Reece quickly changed the farm manager’s mind. “Reece is very honest and the knowledge he’s gained from his Waiariki course is awesome,” says Kevin. “He’s a great employee and better than the last cadet we got from another institution. He is far more advanced with his modules and experience. If he keeps this up, he’ll be a herd manager by the end of the year.”

Dairy exports alone make up 20 per cent of New Zealand’s total exports in any given year. Agriculture training opportunities For those already working in the agriculture industry, Waiariki delivers the National Certificate in Agriculture (Levels 2 through 5) on behalf of Primary Industries Training Organisation (PrimaryITO). Level 2 is ideal for anyone just starting out in the industry, while the higher levels are for those already experienced and employed in the industry seeking to upskill. The training is run part time to suit students who work full time, and to facilitate the practical training that takes place on farms. Graduates of the Certificate in Agriculture and Farm Maintenance from Waiariki can pathway into further study toward a National Certificate

graduate profile Amanda Purcell
Certificate in Horticulture Horticulture has been a lifelong passion of Amanda Purcell’s, and with the help of her family and her tutors at Waiariki, she was able to turn that passion into a career by enrolling in the Certificate in Horticulture at Waiariki Institute of Technology in Whakatane. “I chose Waiariki because I really liked the structure of the courses and I loved the opportunity to study in such a beautiful coastal town like Whakatane. There are a lot of opportunities here not just for me, but for my kids as well.” The graduate began her studies in 2011 and excelled in her courses, gaining top marks across the board. Though she found all her tutors “lovely,” she has been especially grateful to horticulture tutor, Shane O’Leary. “He always took the time to talk, to help me and others, and to understand and help us all accomplish whatever our task was. He is an amazing tutor! He helped me to achieve more than I could have ever expected to achieve during my time at Waiariki.” Within a week of finishing her qualification, Amanda was hired as a team member with Parks and Reserves, a department of Kawerau District Council, where she maintains permanent and annual gardens in the town centre. “I’m happy where I am at present, but in the future I would like to continue my studies in horticulture at a higher level. I would definitely look to return to Waiariki.”

SPORTS TURF MAINTENANCE
graduate profile Jordan Wells
Certificate in Turf Maintenance and Management When the financial recession hit New Zealand a few years ago, the changes led to a complete career turnaround for Jordan Wells. “I had studied real estate and had a career as a commercial/industrial real estate agent for Bayley’s in Auckland, but once the recession hit, the market grew quiet. I knew it was time for a change.” One day, the secretary at his local golf club handed Jordan a brochure detailing the Certificate in Turf Maintenance and Management available at Waiariki Institute of Technology. Jordan was intrigued. “I have always been a golf enthusiast and enjoy working in the outdoors.” Born in Wellington but later moving to Rotorua, Jordan attended Western Heights High School and was familiar with Waiariki. He enrolled in the turf maintenance and management qualification and said he especially enjoyed his course on botany. “Tutor Shane O’Leary was very knowledgeable about the scientific aspects of botany and was an excellent communicator.” After graduating, Jordan took advantage of the academic pathway to further study in Otago, where he completed the National Certificate in Sports Turf Management (Level 4). Shortly thereafter, he gained full-time employment as a greens keeper at North Shore Golf Club in Auckland. Keen to continue building on his skills and education, Jordan says, “I want to develop my career in golf maintenance and then once I get more experience, move into management.”

graduate profile Rowan Monk
Rowan Monk has spent the majority of his life in the forest industry. Furthering his education at Waiariki Institute of Technology helped him when he truly needed it, he said. “I ran my own business in the forest industry where I had been a forestry contractor for a few years. I had an accident at work that changed my life forever. It meant I had to change what I knew, which was hard physical labour, and find something I could handle post-accident, which was more sedentary.” A graduate of the Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety and the Diploma in Forestry, Rowan is currently working as the health, safety, training and recruitment officer for CNI Forest Management Ltd in Rotorua where he has definitely put his Waiariki qualifications and his own experience to good use. When asked what has been most valuable for him during his studies, Rowan remarked, “Just having an understanding of what I do and why. As I have many years of experience, it is great to be able to really understand why we do what we do. It enhances my knowledge considerably.”
