Fury at ‘sky high’ Air NZ prices Air New Zealand’s high prices to fly to and from Nelson have attracted a huge wave of criticism from its own customers. Last week Waimea Weekly reported on several issues that local customers were having with the airline. Since then close to 200 emails, phone calls and comments via the newspaper’s website and Facebook page have flooded in, our largest response ever. A handful of comments were negative about the story but more than 90 per cent praised the paper for reporting the high prices and other issues including alleged rude behaviour from one of its staff members. who have been disappointed with Errol’s customer service which is something we will certainly discuss with him.” This newspaper had over 37 authenticated written complaints many of which were forwarded to the airline in an attempt to show them the perceived severity of the situation. Other issues raised included Air New Zealand’s monopoly on the industry in Nelson and the high fares they offer. Last week Air New Zealand said the cost of its fares was higher for smaller aeroplanes. “The operating costs for these aircraft are higher and the costs are shared by fewer passengers and this is reflected in the ticket prices. As a comparison, Air New Zealand operates larger A320 aircraft on

our Tasman and Pacific Island routes which not only have lower operating costs they also carry up to 168 passengers.” But a retired engineer came forward this week to debunk that reason, saying the operating costs for smaller planes are a lot less. “It is not true that smaller turboprop planes operated out of Nelson cost more to operate than larger jets on other domestic routes. A 737-800’s operating costs are $US7578 per hour. A Q300 (Nelson) operating costs are $US2688 per hour,” wrote Tony Emsley. “The high late booking price is because the airline knows that people will pay it when they have to travel. Of course no competition does help.” Kelly Kilgour, of Air New Zealand, says the airline does discount fares to various destinations and bigger planes are coming to Nelson more. “We deploy our larger more

efficient aircraft to regional centres in line with demand. Nelson is a growth market and we’re increasingly utilising our larger 68 seat ATR aircraft on the Auckland-Nelson route to increase capacity and stimulate demand, which will ultimately flow through to being able to offer a greater volume of cheaper fares out of Nelson.” But customers were less than happy with the current state of pricing. Diane Boote says she had to fly to Christchurch for an urgent MRI scan after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The return airfare cost her $456, which she found “ludicrous” and applied for dispensation for urgent medical treatment. “This MRI could not be done in Nelson, and Christchurch was the only alternative. I am a long-time Koru member and also a shareholder in Air New Zealand,” she pleaded to Air New Zealand. The response from Air New Zealand was:

“Unfortunately our guidelines cannot cover passengers who need to make last minute bookings for medical visits at other ports. Mrs Boote, I am sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis and wish you well.” Sophie Thorn says when she was skiing down in Queenstown last year she spoke to a few people who had instead of taking a flight from Nelson direct to Queenstown, taken a flight from Nelson to Auckland, Auckland to Brisbane, Brisbane to Queenstown as it was “so much cheaper” than flying Nelson to Queenstown. “It’s disgusting the prices they charge, just because they are taking advantage of Nelson, it’s stripping people from being able to enjoy a nice holiday and in some cases visiting family members around NZ.” Helen Hills wrote that she recently went on-line to book tickets to fly from Nelson to Melbourne, via Auckland, and return from Sydney. “The fares seemed excessive

compared to the fares that our friends had booked out of Blenheim for the same destinations. We looked at earlier and later flights from Nelson to connect with the Auckland to Melbourne flight, but they were even more expensive. In the end, we decided to drive over the hill and travel with our friends from Blenheim, saving $606, minus the fuel.” But Air New Zealand says it does release cheap flights. “Our cheapest fares always sell out first for obvious reasons. If a customer is trying to book very close to their travel date or on a particularly popular date the cheapest fares are generally already sold out. However, Air New Zealand continually releases discounted fares to various domestic destinations.” An editorial on this issue is printed on page 14 of this newspaper and please keep sending us your horror stories from your dealings with Air New Zealand.

Appleby’s new reserve The dream of a small group of visionaries became a reality last Sunday when the Tasman district’s newest reserve was officially opened at a ceremony in Appleby. Hoddy Estuary Park was destined to become a housing development in 2003 following the closure of HortResearch’s Apple Research Orchard, until the group intervened to save the land for a public park. The newly-formed Hoddy Estuary Park Trust purchased the 4.9 hectare block adjacent to the Waimea Estuary in Appleby and spent the next 11 years raising funds and developing the land into a park. Trust founding chairman Peter Owen says the park is named after one of the Nelson-Tasman region’s founding orchardists, Peter Hoddy, who grew up near

the land. Peter says the Hoddy family “saved the day”, making a substantial donation to the trust, allowing it to repay the loan for the land’s purchase after Peter Hoddy passed away in January 2005. “We had to repay a loan we used to buy the land and we had a shortfall in the funding. We were in a very precarious position so I called (Nelson MP) Nick Smith for help. “Nick has always been a great supporter of the project and he talked to the Hoddy family and they saved the day. From there we have just plodded on.” Peter says the Hoddy’s are at the head of a very generous list of people and groups who have

donated money, time and materials to the project starting with Tom Sturgess who provided an interest free loan for three years for the trust to purchase the land. The trust purchased the land for $150,000. Richard Hoddy says the park is a wonderful tribute to his father and that his brother Michael and two sisters, Anne and Carol, are all delighted to be involved in a project that the whole community will enjoy. “I’m sure that, if my father were alive today, he would be honoured,” Richard says. Tasman District Council has also been a partner in the project, contributing funding of $55,000 as well as providing advice and guidance to the project team and will now manage the day to day running of the park.

NEWS in brief $1.7M FOR FLOOD RECOVERY: Civil defence minister Nikki Kaye yesterday announced the government will pay $1.46 million to Nelson City Council and $317,000 to Tasman District Council for civil defence emergency response and recovery costs arising from the flood event in the Nelson-Tasman region in December 2011. Economy growing faster

Police: Crime lowest since 1996 Total crime in the Tasman Police District is at its lowest point since 1996, according to figures released yesterday by Statistics New Zealand. The stats, which are to December 31 last year, show that crime in the district has been steadily declining since a peak in 2009 when a total of 18,804 offences were recorded. Last year, there were just 14,634 offences recorded. The Tasman Police District – which covers Nelson Bays, Marlborough and West Coast – also has a strong crime resolution rate with 51.6 per cent, according to the figures.

Nelson’s economy is growing faster than the national average and the manufacturing industry is leading the way. Last year, Nelson and Tasman combined to contribute $3,795,000,000 to the nation’s gross domestic product, or 1.8 per cent of the country’s total GDP, according to figures released last week by Statistics New Zealand. Manufacturing plays a big part in the local economy, with it performing particularly strongly in 2011 when it made up about 13 per cent of the region’s GDP. Between 2007 and 2011, the rental, hiring and real estate services and health care and social assistance industries contributed the most to the region’s GDP increase. In 2012, the main contributor to the increase was professional, scientific, technical, administrative, support services and agriculture industries. Statistics New Zealand says Nelson and Tasman have a “well-diversified economy” for a small region.

District Commander Superintendent Richard Chambers says the results being achieved were no surprise. “While there are always areas we will identify that require some extra focus, I’m very pleased to see we are maintaining and advancing our good results,” he says. Serious assaults have declined from last year and on a population basis are at the lowest level since 2002. Public place assaults are steadily declining. On a population basis they are now at the lowest level since 1999. Public order offences are also down 20

per cent and all three areas in the district recording resolution rates of well above 80 per cent for those offences. Dishonesty related offences remain the biggest driver of police work across the district, accounting for 26.51 per cent of all offences recorded. However these types of offences were down in 2013 over the previous two years. Overall, robbery figures remained the same as last year. Richard says these positive results across the board also meant there was a reduction in the number of people falling victim to crime.

Walk for Water raises close to $2k

Sunday’s Walk for Water event has raised just over $1900, with 120 people taking part in the charity walk. All of the money raised from the Walk for Water will contribute to the installation of an entire network of water bores in the African township of Torwood. The town is where Nelson charity Water for Prosperity has been working to improve water. The Walk for Water saw participants walk, run or bike along the Great Taste Cycle Trail from Richmond through to Rabbit Island. Organisers say it was another big success and plan to hold the event again next year.

SPCA over run with cats The Nelson SPCA was already over run with cats and kittens, and its resources are being stretched again after one man dropped off another 16 kittens to its Motueka site. About once a year the Nelson SPCA puts a call out to the public to say they are over run with felines. Currently there are 21 adult cats and 20 kittens up for adoption – and while that number is still short of its record of 65 cats in 2010, resources are stretched to cope with the higher population. Feline assistant Carmin Torrance didn’t want to elaborate on the situation where a man dropped off 16 kittens he didn’t want, but says the Nelson SPCA was hopeful they could be brought over from Motueka once its current numbers had reduced. “Hopefully we can get some moving over the week. I’ve had some others wanting to drop some off but we’ve had to hold them off for another week,” she says. “Once every year [we reach our limit] and it’s generally in this period after Christmas time with people moving or going away, but this is the second or third

time this year we’ve had to put a call out.” Nelson SPCA take unwanted cats even though some other SPCAs do not, because they are worried “what would happen to them if we didn’t?’ says Carmin. “People are finding it tough out there and they can’t afford to own an animal, which makes our job hard as well. A lot of them are strays but we need people to take a little more responsibility. Some SPCAs don’t take in other people’s cats, they just can’t, they’re too full.” Carmin says pet owners need to take more responsibility and look for new potential owners before dropping them off at the SPCA as a last resort. “It just worries me that if we don’t take them then people will leave them behind and we’ll just end up with them anyway.” To help find new owners, SPCA is offering adult cats for half price at $50 while kittens can be adopted for $130. All cats are micro chipped, vaccinated and de-sexed.

Expo for elderly The region’s elderly will have an opportunity to find out what 3D really means, and have some myths about residential care explored and exploded at this Thursday’s Nelson Tasman Positive Aging Expo at the Headingly Centre near Richmond. The popular expo is aimed at showcasing the recreational, health and social services that help make ageing a positive experience in the NelsonTasman region. It will be opened by the Minister of Senior Citizens Jo Goodhew and will feature 68 stalls, two seminars and a range of activities and demonstrations. Nelson Tasman Positive Ageing Forum chairperson Gail Collingwood says the seminars will be especially

interesting, with president of the Retirement Villages Association New Zealand, Margaret Owens, discussing residential care and Christchurch doctor Jenny Keightley talking about home-based support starting at 10.15am. Gail says there is also a wide range of stalls and activities including free health checks and free CarFit checks for older drivers. The Expo is aimed at older adults and their families and runs from 10am to 3pm. Admission is free with complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits provided. A free bus service will run from Sundial Square in Richmond to the Expo every 30 minutes from 10am to 1.30pm.

Soroptimists announce grant winner Marama Bevan has been chosen as the winner of this year’s education grant from Soroptimist International of Waimea. It’s the second year the group has run the grant and they say they’d like to see it become an annual scheme to help local women further their education. Marama Bevan, was one of nine who applied. She is in her second year at NMIT, studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Marketing. This grant will allow her to pursue her dream of completing her degree, while taking away some of the added financial pressures that come with such a decision of returning to full time study. “I’m very grateful for receiving this scholarship and hope other women are inspired to follow their dreams.” Soroptimist member Helen Bywater, says the group were really impressed with the quality of applicants.

Richmond man recalls time on sunken ship The former navy launch Tarapunga that sank near Pepin Island last month was involved in one of New Zealand’s most tragic and mysterious maritime disasters, searching for the ill-fated MV Holmglen that disappeared off Timaru on November 24, 1959. Auckland couple Gary and Carol Ardern escaped with only their cat when the Tarapunga caught fire and sank about five kilometres off Pepin Island on March 5. The US-built harbour defence launch was purchased by the New Zealand Navy in 1943 and later used for survey work around the coastline, before being sold to private owners in 1984. This week, a former navy crew member of the Tarapunga, Stephan Jolly of Richmond, recalled how they were one of the first ships to respond to a distress signal from the Holmglen. Stephan was a navy surveyor on the Tarapunga from 1956 to 1964 and says they were berthed in Port Timaru when the Holmglen sent a distress call at 9.35pm. The Tarapunga and another naval survey ship Takapau were the first to respond to the call but searchers found no sign of the vessel except for a large oil slick and floating debris. All 15 crew of the Holmglen, which was sailing from Oamaru to Wellington, died and only three bodies were recovered. It was one of the many stories Stephan told of his time on the Tarapunga and he says he was deeply

He had been one of eight crew aboard the 72foot motor launch as she sailed around the coastline charting New Zealand’s waters. Stephan says the Tarapunga worked alongside the converted navy frigate HMNZS Lachlan, which was used to survey the deeper waters while the Tarapunga’s crew surveyed inshore areas. The Tarapunga was initially based at Devonport before moving to Wellington and Stephan says she had a top speed of 15 knots and was a pleasure to sail. Stephan says the last time he saw the Tarapunga was two years ago when she was berthed in Picton. “I had my grandson with me when I saw her and I said ‘that’s my old boat’. She had been modified quite a bit topside since I had sailed on her but she was still in pretty good condition. Then I heard about her sinking. That was sad for everyone who’d sailed on her.”

Air NZ: Air NZ are a joke. We normally fly Jetstar to Oz never had a problem. We just came back from Gold Coast on Thursday last week. Our daughter bought a skate board over there Air NZ wanted to charge us $120 to get it on the plane. Sadly after all the crying we had to leave it at the airport we simply could not afford to bring it back. Terrible service in NZ and Oz. Will only fly other airlines from now on. Rebecca Thomson.

My daughter had a similar experience flying out of Nelson a while ago. Flying with her daughter, they had one suitcase between them which was 4kg over the limit. She was instructed to either carry the excess baggage on herself - or pay the (from memory $5.00 per kg) excess. They had one small carryon bag, and were required to put the excess into a plastic bag, as they were allowed a carryon bag each of course. After complaining about the stupidity of this ruling, and asking how she was supposed to carry two bags and her daughter, the only redeeming factor was that the check in woman did arrange for someone to meet her at the plane at her Auckland destination to assist. Obviously the ruling has not been made by staff checking people in, but how one

slightly overweight bag instead of the allowance of two makes any difference is totally illogical. It is not as though the extra weight is an OSH issue, as it is O.K. if you pay for it. I had a similar experience and have mailed a formal complaing to Air NZ over a month ago with no response. We arrive 4 minutes late for a 6:30am flight to Christchurch. The airport was empty and quiet. This was the start of our trip to take my daughter to Otago University and drop her off. The same man you wrote about was so incredibly rude. Our plane was still on the ground and he refused to let us board. He kept pointing at our ticket to show us we were wrong by arriving late as our ticket ‘clearly stated’. I begged and actually broke down in tears. We had to pay $200 to rebook for a flight two hours later, which was half full. It took him about two minutes to rebook us and I might add, our plane was still on the ground as we sat down to wait. What a pity that we have no power and they hold it all. Andrea Adair. Sick teen still fundraising for others Georgia Ferris has had a year from hell but it isn’t stopping her from taking on a fundraising mission usually reserved for healthy people trying to help people like her. Georgia, 17, was a healthy teenager until May last year, when a gastro intestinal disorder left her unable to attend school or her part time job and having to spend months in hospitals around the country. It was in one of those hospitals – Auckland Public – that Georgia met a fellow patient, a woman called Briar Lobb. When they first met, Georgia

remembers thinking she was around 11 years old and was happy there was another “kid” in the hospital. Later that day she found out Briar was in fact 26, but was so frail because cancer had left her terminally ill. Georgia says Briar was so positive and full of life that she had a remarkable impact on her and the two became close friends over the five weeks they spent together in hospital. Earlier this year, Briar lost her fight with cancer and

when Georgia found out she was herself battling serious complications of her illness at Christchurch hospital. Georgia decided to participate in the Relay for Life in Nelson last month to honour Briar and while there saw some girls shaving their heads to raise more money for cancer research. She says she wanted to join in there and then to fully honour Briar but friends convinced her to delay it so she could raise some money. But because of her illness, people have come forward pledging money if she doesn’t shave her head, but she’s not

interested in that. “It’s only hair, it grows back and some think it’s going to make my health condition worse, but it’s only hair.” She’s already raised close to $1000 for the hospice that cared for Briar in her home town of Palmerston North and is hoping for $2000 by the end of this week when she will shave her hair and donate it to Pantene, who use the hair to make wigs for cancer patients. Georgia’s mum Robyn FerrisMaxwell says she’s right behind

Georgia’s challenge. “Yes Georgia’s sick, but doing things that make you feel good can only make you stronger and there’s a really beautiful meaning behind it.” While Georgia’s road to recovery is still far from certain or far from complete she says helping honour her friend who taught her about staying positive will mean a lot to her. Kids take on Tryathlon

I remember the night in 1979 when the news came that an Air New Zealand plane was missing in the Antarctic and was overdue. It was the first news that something had gone horroribly wrong on the Antarctic sightseeing trip we now refer to simply as the Erebus crash. I was reminded of it again over the last couple of weeks as there were first reports and then rampant speculation about Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. As I write there are still many unanswered questions. But what is certain now is that for many people the grief of losing a loved one has begun. Grief is part of life and no matter who we are we will experience it in life. We even read of Jesus expressing grief at the death of a friend. To feel grief is to be human. Grief has no set pattern or order, the depth and duration of each grief experience is different for everyone. Yet those who experience grief share common reactions and responses, we just express them in different ways- our own way. Why not give a person a gift today of an opportunity to celebrate a lost one’s life by mentioning their name and give them time to talk, shed a tear or even laugh as they respond as they wish. If they don’t want to talk that is okay at least you showed you cared. Jesus said “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Matthew 5:4 Will you be a “Jesus agent” of comfort today, offering hope to help their loss?

Editorial: Air NZ needs to sort its prices Steve Page

Air New Zealand is being a bit naughty. They have a public relations division to “snow” a story when it arises and the story that arises most often? Overcharging on their fares. Let’s have a look at Nelson. Air New Zealand holds the monopoly with around 95 per cent of passengers flying with Air NZ. Due to Nelson’s shortish runway, no jets can fly in, so there is no real competition and the location is ripe for the plucking. No competition, a seemingly more affluent customer and the fourth busiest airport in NZ make this an airline’s dream. It’s called a ripe revenue stream and any business would look at this situation and basically find out how far the prices can be pushed up. That’s not really a super-bad thing, but there has to be limits. Air NZ state they do have “compassionate fares” and advise

passengers that for an extra $12 they can insure the fare in case they have to change it. But how it works is that you change the ticket, pay the extra and then when you get back from your journey you fill out the 3-4 page claim form and if you can still be bothered send it away for consideration and even then you may be refused. We were unable to locate anyone who had taken advantage of the compassionate airfares and in one instance as one passenger said, “it’s my business so I’m not comfortable explaining my personal and often very private circumstances to a complete stranger”. Why are we putting up with this? You can be sure the only thing that will stop this is the introduction of a competitor. Air NZ has shown in the past they are quite comfortable putting up with the complaints and squawking of the Nelson people because the business model is so lucrative. The old snow job of it being more expen-

sive to operate from Nelson than a huge jet flying overseas is just PR hype. The prices are all relative. A small prop plane, such as those used here in Nelson, are cheaper to run, crew, land and pay for. So why not match the fares accordingly? Here’s what we have been told by our readers as far as recent unbelievable prices go: $1200 return for two to Christchurch, $832 one way for two to Auckland, $2400 for two to Whakatane return and $789 return for one person to Dunedin. We’ve also heard of a $105 charge just to change a changeable airfare for three to Wellington and $1100 for a return fare to Bluff to bury a relative. These fares are on a par with international fares. There is a social responsibility on Air NZ’s part to provide a reliable, competitive service that also recognises compassionate and emergency situations and reacts accordingly. Not drop the level of service on board, charge at every whim, and con-

tinue to put badly-behaved staff, such as in last week’s issue, in front of the public. The public need to be treated with dignity and respect. The most ironic twist, and they hear this all the time, is that when they got into big strife and were losing millions it was us, the taxpayers who bailed them out. What we want from Air NZ is this: There has to be a balance, not the continual raping of the fares in and out of Nelson. Think about lost sporting chances and indeed business opportunities, as well as personal relationships that depend on an efficient and fair price structure for air travel as well as that good old ground service. As Nelson grows and demands are put on the ability to travel with financial ease as part of our ongoing success and growth, Air NZ sits like a big fat aluminium budgie on the runway with its head up its bum. And the guys from Origin warned us this would happen, didn’t they?

There won’t be too many complaints when Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers review the 2013/2014 cricket season. The Brightwater-based club reached all three finals, winning two of them including Saturday’s Nelson Cricket one day final against Bar 321 Waimea Toi Toi United. Chasing 253 for victory, after Wanderers batsmen Pete Carey and Joseph O’Connor reached 88 and 87 runs respectively, Waimea Toi Toi United fell well short on 175 all out. The big win, which was Wanderers’ first against WTTU this season, means they are now holders of the Twenty20 title and the one day title. It was only in the two day format that they could not be crowned kings in. Even in the individual honours Wanderers were on top. Captain Daniel Cooper hit 821 runs during the course of the season to finish as the leader of the Vonda Edwards Trophy. English bowler Jack White had 49 wickets to his name, earning the Sid Guppy Cup as highest wicket taker. Daniel says a second title was the

perfect way to end the season. “The boys are pretty rapt with it,” he says. “There’s been a lot of build up to this point for us. Our last couple of seasons have been really good and I think Andy Leonard has been a big part of that as coach. He’s really helped the cricket club in general, which has been great.” When looking back at all of the results from throughout the season, which included a record breaking 422-run win over Motueka, Daniel says the highlight was the Twenty20 final, which “really got us going” and was the club’s first trophy in eight years. “It gave us quite a bit of belief and throughout that Twenty20 tournament our players really stepped up.” He now hopes Wanderers can replicate the success it had in 2001 when the club won the national championship. Wanderers have gained qualification to the Central District tournament next season in a bid to reach the national round.

Well, the endless summer carries on with long hot days and not much wind, making it awesome fishing weather. The water in Tasman Bay is very hot at over 20 degrees, with lots of albacore tuna now being caught all over the bay in 40 metres of water. The kingfish are still in massive numbers around the Boulder Bank and Motueka spat farms with the spearos getting the bigger ones by hand-picking them. Land based fishing is also doing well with Kina Beach, Mapua and the Back Beach producing some good pannie snapper. Kenepuru has finally started to fire with some good double digit fish getting landed now for those putting the hard yards in. However the seven gill sharks are still keeping the tackle shops in business. Only a couple of months of the fishing season left so if you haven’t been out to get a tuna now is the time as the water will start to cool off from now on. This will also see the snapper start to move out deeper and the kingfish start to leave the bay. It also means the big kingfish and snapper will turn up around D’Urville Island in the next couple of months and hopefully give us as good a sea-

son as we had last year. With the amount of feed that’s been around this year I would not be surprised if it’s a very good winter fishery. Also, I can report huge schools of anchovies with thousands of birds feeding and big schools of kawahai chasing them, great fun and easy to catch! Kayak fishing in the region has been great this past month with big work ups from kahawai adding to the sport and the thrill on the yaks. Plenty of great sized snapper between 6 and 10 pounds still about and being caught. The kayaking numbers are increasing and we counted 10 in the bay this past weekend. It is especially good to see some younger people getting in to it with their parents. With amazing weather still with us there is still plenty of time for getting out there and trying your luck. Hopefully the forecast for Easter will be good and also the school holidays. They will provide an ideal last opportunity to get some snapper in Tasman Bay before the water temperature cools and the fish move out to deeper waters. As this happens the better places to fish will be around Pepin Island, Cable and Delaware Bays.

The Georgina Hope Swimmers Foundation Australia Age Championship will be held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre from April 14. At the championship, Caitlin will compete in the female 15 100m breaststroke, Sara will race in the female 15 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke, Talya has qualified for the female 14 800m freestyle, Thomas will race in both the male 15 1500m freestyle and 400m freestyle, and Sam has qualified in five freestyle races; 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and 1500m. Some of these kids have never been to Australia so the thought of just going there itself is an incentive,” says Andy, who highlights that for the first time ever NelsonMarlborough has four swimmers ranked number one in New Zealand at the same time. When comparing the standard between the Australian and the New Zealand Championship, Andy says an Australian finalist would likely medal at the New Zealand event. He hopes the experience of competing against international competition in an arena used for the Olympic Games would ease the anxiety and nervousness when the New Zealand Championship rolls along. “It’s a much bigger competition at a much higher standard so when they come back they’ll be much more confident and relaxed. Confident, relaxed swimmers go a lot faster.”

James Lowe was back in town last week. He spoke with Waimea Weekly reporter Phillip Rollo about life as a Super Rugby player.

It didn’t take long for James Lowe to make his mark on Super Rugby. In his very first match for the two-time champion Chiefs, last year’s Waimea Old Boys captain ran the length of the field to score the match winning try against the Crusaders. James was initially named on the bench, but his debut came slightly earlier than expected when 100 cap All Black Mills Muliaina was struck down by injury in the first half. Mills is a player James grew up admiring, and he says it’s a dream come true to be playing alongside one of the legends of New Zealand rugby. And although he’s already scored two tries, James says Super Rugby is certainly a step up. “The hits are harder, the games are faster, the amount of work and preparation is a lot more. four to five days a week just to prepare for your next opponent,” says the 21 year old winger, who was back in Nelson to watch Waimea Old Boys take on Nelson in the first round of club rugby while he nurses a torn medial ligament injury. When running through the moment when the former New Zealand Secondary Schools player intercepted the ball, burned off All Black fullback Israel Dagg and scored on debut, James says “instinct just took over”. “I just thought if I stopped running I’d look like a dick. Having Israel Dagg breathing down your neck for 50 metres isn’t a very nice feeling.” The Chiefs weren’t the only Super Rugby team that chased his signature, but the decision to join the two-time champions on a two-year deal, and to play under coaches Dave Rennie and Wayne Smith was an easy one.

“I thought it’d be the best place for me to learn and to grow as a player. At the moment I’m pretty happy with where I am and don’t expect to leave anytime soon, as long as they want me.” While unlikely to feature for Waimea Old Boys this year due to his Super Rugby commitments, James says the team is “looking pretty good” for 2014. He was wearing a Waimea Old Boys jersey during the interview and says he plans to frame it and put it on the wall of his newly bought Hamilton home. His Super Rugby try celebration has involved a shark fin for the Tasman Makos and a W for Waimea. “It’s not for Wanderers,” James jokes. “I thought I’d get a bit of stick if I didn’t do it but Waimea is always at the back of my heart. I’m going to get this jersey framed, put it in my house just so everyone knows not to mess with us.”

Waimea seek players for Under-18 team

Waimea Old Boys is looking for potential players to join a team that will play in the Nelson Bays Under-18 competition this season. The team will be made up of Waimea College students and any school leavers that fall into the age category. Club president Duane Whiting says the decision to link up with Waimea College was intended to help keep players in the sport. “They’ve got

about a dozen players and we’re looking to get a few more who are keen to join them,” he says. Stoke Rugby Club recently joined forces with Nayland College, and Garin College has links with Marist, so the idea of linking club and school isn’t unusual. Duane says any players who would be keen to join the team, which will have top quality coaches, can contact him on 027 444 3225.

A new look Richmond Athletic side will have plenty of young attacking talent to call upon this season. Fresh Choice Richmond, who finished second in the Nelson Pine Industries division one football competition last year, open the season against defending champions FC Nelson this Saturday. Richmond will have Nelson Marlborough Falcons players Levi Waddington, David Maisey and Jamie Cresswell in their ranks again, while five new arrivals from Nelson Suburbs include first year Falcons Nat Payn and Dion Keetley. Other new signings include some players who had previously played for Richmond. Coach Marc Evans, who will be assisted by Matt Campbell, says the team will have a fresh look to it, with nine players departing from last season. “It’s a whole new team. We’ve got good players and I think on paper there’s more to us this year,” he says. “We’re still a work in progress but I think if the boys knuckle down and their attitude is right then we’ll be more competitive than we were last year.” Richmond were leading the

Tasman District Council’s Draft Annual Plan 2014/2015 and Proposed Rates Remissions Policies

Public Notice of Alcohol Licensing Applications

Draft Annual Plan 2014/2015 Tasman District Council’s Draft Annual Plan 2014/2015 is now available for public consultation. The Draft Annual Plan covers the year from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015. The purpose of the Draft Annual Plan is to get feedback on whether you think the Council is planning to provide the right services and activities within the Tasman District. Your views will help guide the Council’s decision-making, prior to the final Annual Plan being adopted in June 2014. The Council approved the Draft Annual Plan for public consultation at it’s meeting on 13 March 2014. The Draft Annual Plan comprises two documents: • A Summary, which was sent to all households in the Tasman District through a special edition of Newsline on 21 March 2014. • The Draft Annual Plan containing the key changes the Council is planning from the proposals in the Long Term Plan for the 2014/2015 year, the services the Council is planning to provide, the costs of the services and how the services will be funded. The Council has also produced the “17 Settlements” document as supplementary information to the Draft Annual Plan. The 17 Settlements document outlines what new projects and activities are being provided by ward and settlement within the District. The Draft Annual Plan is a large document and the Council encourages people to view it electronically to minimise production costs. It is available on compact disk from Council Service Centres or libraries and can be downloaded from the website. Statements of Proposal for: Policy on Remission on Low Value Properties (those valued at less than $4,500) Policy on Remission of Rates for Sporting, Recreation or Community Organisations Policy for Early Payment of Rates in the Current Financial Year Policy on Remission of Rates on Land Protected for Natural Conservation Purposes The Statements of Proposal for the above Rating policies are to improve the administration and reduce the costs of Council’s Rating system. The Council approved the four Statements of Proposal for public consultation at it’s meeting on 19 February 2014. The full Statements of Proposal are set out in the Draft Annual Plan 2014/2015 and a Summary of Information is contained in the special edition of Newsline dated 21 March 2014. Submissions are invited on the Draft Annual Plan and/or the four proposed rating policies, and must be received by 4.30 pm on 15 April 2014. Applications for new and renewed alcohol licences are now being publicly advertised on the Council website. The use of a website for public notices is allowed under the new Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, and is good for the community and for businesses. The public notices remain accessible to everyone online rather than just appearing sporadically in the local newspaper. This allows the community to view the public notices at their leisure on the website. There are also links and information for people wanting to object to an application. Site notices will still be displayed on the premises to alert the public to an application. Businesses applying for an alcohol licence will benefit from this service as it eliminates the expense of advertising. This is welcome as the fees for licences have generally increased across the board. Road Closures Closure of Road to Ordinary Vehicular Traffic In accordance with the Transport (Vehicle Road Closure) Regulations 1965, notice is hereby given that that for the purpose of allowing the National Advanced Drivers School to carry out driver training the following road will be closed to ordinary vehicles for the periods and times indicated below. Road to be closed to Ordinary Vehicles and Period of Closure Marchwood Park Road from entrance at Queen Victoria Street.
