Coastal Highway’s safety “needs attention” Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The safety of the Coastal Highway “needs to be addressed” after three crashes in the last six weeks, including the tragic double fatal-
ity on February 27, added to the State Highway’s already alarmingly high crash stats. NZTA statistics show that there have been 107 reported crashes and nine fatalities on the section of State Highway 60 between Three Brothers Corner and Ma-
pua Dr since 2000. Tasman road policing leader senior sergeant Grant Andrews agrees those statistics are distressing and that the deadly stretch of road “needs attention”. “It has a history of tragedy and people are rightly concerned
about the high crash rate,” Grant says. “I drive that road every single day and it needs attention.” Although speed has been a factor in some of the crashes, Grant says reducing the speed limit may not be the answer. He says there needs to be a comprehensive re-
view of all the factors involved in the crashes to find the best solution for improving the road’s safety. Grant stresses that some of the crashes were clearly caused by

“I’ve done a lot of driving and I find it great. I think that visitors to NZ need to sit down and understand the road rules and that they’re not looking at scenery when they’re driving.”
“I drive on that road all the time and I don’t find it a problem. I don’t see how people can crash there. I suspect it’s the people, not the road.”
Yvonna Hofsteede, Westdale Rd. “It’s dangerous at times because people are driving too fast. The two accidents were near the Westdale Rd intersection, I think that area should be reduced to 80km.”
George Stone, Richmond. “I don’t have a problem with it, the issue is normally just speed. We can blame the roads for everything but we need to drive to the roads and to the conditions.”

driver inattention, including February’s double fatality which “could have been on any piece of road”. Drivers also need to take extra care on SH60 because it is used by many drivers who are “unfamiliar with the road”. NZTA crash stats show that the McShane (6 crashes), Pugh (8), Lansdowne (13), Swamp (10), Redwood (9), River (9), Research Orchard (14) and Maisey (7) roads are the highest risk intersections. Fatal crashes have been recorded near McShane (2), Pugh (1), Lansdowne (1), Westdale (1) Maisey (3) and Harley road intersections. NZTA regional performance manager Mark Owen says they are always “concerned about any stretch of state highway where crashes occur” and are planning a review of the safety of SH60.
Emergency services attend the fatal accident on State Highway 60 on February 27. Mark says they will be working with the Tasman District Council and other key stakeholders to consider what will be the “safe and appropriate speed for the highway”. However, Mark says that they need to “look at a whole corridor, rather than particular black

spots” on the road. He says they have to consider a wide range of factors, including the road’s function, design, safety, use and the surrounding environment, including how the land is used. Mark says one of the variables they need to consider is that SH60 is getting busier with an-

nual average daily traffic volumes at Research Orchard Rd increasing from 8,295 in 2011 to 10,312 in 2015. NZTA hasn’t analysed high risk intersections on SH60 since 2013 although, at that time, no intersection in the Tasman district were rated as high risk.

Tasman’s senior citizens will have a busy retirement if Friday’s Positive Ageing Expo at the Headingly Centre is any indication. The popular annual expo featured 74 stalls and four seminars that showcased the recreational, health and social services available to people of retirement age. And many of the people attending the expo showed they have no intention of slowing down as they checked out E-bikes, fitness classes and craft demonstrations. Wakefield’s Eve Brunnenkreef and Tahuna’s Rose Ball were two of the many active seniors looking for ways to stay fit and healthy with Rose saying she
needed to keep exercising to “stop banging into walls” when she walks. Eve was especially interested in the Richmond Aquatic and Fitness Centre’s new Legend’s fitness programme for seniors which she says will help her “use it or lose it.” Eve and Rose say there are lots of fitness programmes around at all the gyms but they want one that targets older people because they “feel uncomfortable doing that sort of thing around younger people”. One of the event organisers, Tasman District Council community and recreation advisor Mike Tasman-Jones says this year’s expo attracted around 2000 people which is slightly higher than last year. Mike says

20 years of Meals on Wheels
Protection from the common cold
Brittany Spencer Reporter
The common cold is not the same as the flu. The common cold is contagious and difficult to avoid. Act early to boost your body’s resistance to viral infections. Get plenty of sleep, avoid getting run down, maintain a balanced diet, exercise and keep hydrated. Support your immune system by taking multi- vitamins, vitamin C, zinc, echinacea, garlic... The list goes on and knowing which supplement is best for you can be confusing. Come and talk to us and we can choose the most suitable option for you. Buccaline is a very good preventative for the complications of the common cold. I recommend you consider a course now, and a follow up course in three months to get you through the winter.

For the past two decades, local woman Frances Ashton has been driving around the same area of Richmond, handing out meals to ill and elderly locals. The Red Cross Meals on Wheels volunteer has just received her 20 year badge and certificate, and says she loves doing it just as much now as she did when she first began. “I started as a relief driver because I was sick and thought, ‘oh, you stupid woman, you need to get out and do something’ and I’ve done it ever since.” Frances is one of the 190 volunteers delivering meals every week day to locals in Nelson, Stoke, Richmond and Motueka. “Thursday is my day, I make my appointments, I do my shopping, but other than that I make sure I stay on the island so I can deliver my meals. “I just love being able to cheer people up and help them out, often they’ll have questions and I’m meant to be a fountain of all knowledge when I’m not, but it’s just lovely to

the ambulance came and then a few weeks later I was back delivering meals to her.” Frances has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, but even having to deal with the pain as she gets in and out of the car hasn’t stopped her. “It’s always lovely catching up with my clients, I even have one woman who gets mobility meals every other day but she gets a meal from us on a Thursday so that I’ll deliver them, she just wants me to
visit her, that makes my day.” Red Cross Service Centre Coordinator Jackie Tye says Frances Ashton joins a special group of volunteers who have achieved a 20 year award. “Our volunteers make a wonderful contribution in all the Red Cross programmes and we formally recognise their contribution at regular milestones.” If anyone is interested in volunteering for the Red Cross, call Jackie Tye on 546 5012.

Troy’s 201kg swordfish Jacob Page
Fisheries officers met fisherman Troy Dando at the boat ramp to make sure his latest catch - a 201kg swordfish, wasn’t underszied. The former Dawnbreakers Fishing Club president achieved his dream of catching a big swordfish in South Island waters last week, a feat three years in the planning. He says he had no idea he had
the prized fish he wanted until he had it near the boat after a 90 minute effort to reel it in off the coast of Greymouth. “When it first took the hook I thought it was nothing more than a baby shark, it just tapped the line. However, the moment it took off and churned through 150m of line he thought there was a chance he had hooked the fish dubbed “The Gladiator of the
Sea” for its tenacious fighting ability when hooked. Troy says he did it with a twist on a kingfish set up on their line and it paid dividends. “We had no idea what we had until it was right next to our boat. “After 90 minutes of fight it took another 60 minutes to haul it onto the boat and when we managed that, (the fish) took up most of the space on board.” Troy says his mate, Gavin Wil-

liams, deserves a lot of credit for tying a great line and his role in getting the fish on board. “We also had a lot of great advice from locals on the best spots to fish and the areas that they might be hanging out in, everyone was really supportive.” Troy says he was fishing at a depth of 100m and 500m. Initially he was fishing at 450m until his Simrad fish finder suggested there was something at

250m “Without that I would have kept fishing at a lower depth and the fish would have been swimming above me.” Troy says the fish has now been cut up with the meat put in tins. “It’s hugely satisfying, I’ve fished all over the world but to get that catch after so much planning is right up there in terms of highlights. It was something on my bucket list and it’s great to finally say I’ve achieved it.

.CO.NZ The stag then made his way along Main Rd Stoke where local woman Tania Read witnessed the action. “It took me a second to realise, we’re talking about 2 o’clock in the morning, you’re wondering why you’re awake and then suddenly a stag goes racing down the street. “I went outside and there’s all these police cars trailing behind it and I said aloud, ‘did I just see that?’ And one of the policemen stuck his head out the window and said, ‘yes, you did’. Fog blankets the region: Commuters driving from Appleby to Rocks Rd on Friday morning had to navigate their way through a thick blanket of fog. One local who drove from the “sunny and clear” Victory to Tahunanui described driving into the fog along Rocks Road, “like hitting a wall of fog”.

Born & Raised’s mega crew with judges Chris Teava and Daphne Seyb at the Street Dance competition in Christchurch.
Hip hop crews off to nationals
Nelson’s newest hip hop dance studio, Born & Raised, is ramping up their training for the Street Dance nationals in Auckland after taking out two of the four categories at last month’s Street Dance South Island competition in Christchurch. The Born & Raised Academy was established last December by nationally-recognised dancer and teacher Ashley Belk. Only four months later, her two crews were competition ready with the junior crew, Spilt Milk, and mega
crew Born & Raised both excelling in Christchurch to qualify for the April 27-29 nationals. Spilt Milk finished second after the preliminary round in Christchurch and Ashley says “we worked hard all afternoon on our feedback from the judges and ended up coming first in the finals with a score of 6.28.” Born & Raised was uncontested in the mega crew division, where a 15-person minimum crew is required. However, Ashley says win-
ning a section does not give a crew automatic right of entry into nationals. “Our goal was to achieve a high enough score to give us a place at nationals and we did it, we won our own battle, with a score of 6.65.” “It was a big day,” she says. “The kids and I put everything into these routines and this competition, and we are so happy to see it was worth it-it was more than worth it.” Ashley says the crews’ training regime has not slackened, with five weeks left to
prepare for the three-day national competition being held in Auckland. The top crews at this event win an entry to the Hip Hop International competition in the US later in the year. Ashley’s history in dance began in the Origin dance crew which made the New Zealand’s Got Talent semi-finals. The Origin crew also qualified for international competitions in the Netherlands and Hawaii, where they finished fifth and second respectively.

Hope booked out Simon Bloomberg Hope School pupils transformed into bookworms last week as they read and listened to story after story and then dressed up as their favourite book characters for the annual Book Week. Pupils listened to stories from guest readers every day last week including author Cath Halliwell, former principal Dave Pritchard, Tasman district librarian Lucy Brunswick, parent and author Liz Hegarty and Jerri Pirc. They also made book marks, designed a book cover, completed a book character technology challenge and shared their favourite books. Book Week culminated in a parade on Friday when pupils dressed as their favourite book characters. But it wasn’t all fun and games with principal Freya Hogarth saying the school also held a Scholastic Book Fair to raise funds for the
library. “It’s been a busy week with guest readers coming in every day and talking about their favourite books,” Freya says. “We also had the older students buddying-up with the younger ones and reading stories to them - everyone enjoyed it.” Room two pupil Ezra Salmond says he liked the book Enter the Dark Night “because it’s about the new Lego Batman movie. It has cool activities and pictures, the Joker is really funny and it even comes with some free Lego.” Seraphina Barker read the Haunted House “because it looked scary but you had to be 10 to get it” while Aaron Macintosh chose Dog Man Unleashed. Oscar Neubauer’s favourite was Secret Mission Folder because “it had a cool pen that did invisible writing and you used a light on the pen to make it show up”.

Richmond Croquet stays a cut above The Richmond Croquet Club’s lawns have always been regarded as a cut above the rest and now they could become even better after the club invested in the latest lawn mowing technology. Richmond’s old mower had seen better days after the club purchased it secondhand over 16 years ago. After the old mower broke down the day before the club co-hosted the national gold croquet champs in Jan-
uary, club officials decided it was time for an upgrade. And thanks to a $8000 grant from the Rata Foundation, the club last week rolled out its new mower which president Lance Barker says will help keep their greens in perfect condition. “Everyone who comes and plays here from other clubs always says how nice our greens are and we want to keep them that way,” Lance says. “The old mower was getting a bit unreliable and
hard to use, so we needed the new one to keep our greens up to standard.” Lance says the club’s volunteer greenkeepers Lawrie Cooper and Brian Wislang are delighted to get a new mower which would have cost $38,000 new but the club got for “a great deal” because it was a demonstration model. He says Lawrie and Brian mow the club’s one hectare lawn twice a week during the playing season.

New community centre for Richmond Simon Bloomberg A new Richmond community centre is finding a way to help people connect and ultimately aims to provide them with some valuable life skills. The Waimea Adult and Youth Centre (WAY) opened in the old Sunday School room at the back of St David’s Church at 11 Florence St on March 20. WAY will offer three workshops each week to help people learn some new skills as well as provide a friendly environment for people to relax and enjoy “a coffee or tea with others and create the community we all desire”. Dave says WAY will initially be open from 9am to 1pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday when there will be a 90 minute workshop from 10:30am to 12pm. Monday’s workshops will be focused on food budgeting, food planning, food preparation and living on a low budget, Wednesday’s will look at financial budgeting, preparing a job CV and parenting skills while Friday’s will be centred around gardening and DIY skills.

Trafalgar CenTre re-development
The upgrade on one of Nelson’s largest and most versatile venues has almost reached completion, and locals are more than a little excited by the future opportunities the new and improved Trafalgar Centre has to offer the region. Built as a multipurpose facility in the early 1970s, the centre has a history of hosting major cultural and entertainment events, as well as accommodating exhibitions and conferences. “At the time the Trafalgar Centre was built, it was the biggest multi-purpose events centre in the country,” says Mayor Rachel Reese. “The redevelopment and upgrade has respected the value of this significant public asset and given it a lease of life that will serve the community well for decades to come. It is still the largest events centre of its kind in our region and the improvements we’ve made make it even more user-friendly and desirable for events. Our focus is on attracting

Nelson is increasingly being recognised as a year-round destination and the Trafalgar Centre will be a draw card for many.”

Among the various events that have experienced Trafalgar Centre’s hospitality, many have been community-focused and that is a point of difference the centre is proud of. “Often a facility of this size has a
completely corporate focus, and one thing that was very important for us was to ensure the centre still remained a community space as well, in particular the northern extension,” says Rachel. “The Victory rooms that were

there before were used enormously by community groups and for community festivals and we want to ensure this continues, it’s a community space as well as a corporate event space.” Earthquake strengthening work on the main stadium was completed in April 2016 and this section of the centre was reopened to allow the Nelson Giants to return for the basketball season. This year, the completion of the stunning new space at the northern end of the centre will provide an even more versatile and attractive venue for a wide range of events. The upgrade has taken time, resources and involved plenty of debate both for and against, but after seeing the upgraded centre in the flesh, it’s impossible not to be impressed by how much thought has gone into futureproofing the facility. The southern end of the stadium is where the stage would be located for a show or concert.

Overlooking this stage area and the rest of the court are rooms that will be developed to meet a variety of purposes, including space for the stage manager to oversee a show, or as a corporate box during sporting events. There are eight changing rooms throughout the stadium and, once again, they are designed with versatility in mind. In a sporting scenario there are two referee changing-rooms which are slightly smaller but which gives each their own personal space, and, of course, team changing-rooms. There are also backstage rooms that can be used to accommodate a number of stage performers for rehearsals and shows. These rooms feature mirrors framed with lights for hair and makeup, lockers, showers, banks of seating, couches and a washing machine, creating a space that people can treat like a home away from home. “The Pink Floyd Experience, who are coming to Nelson this year, have actually chosen to do their planning for the rest of the tour here. "So, even though they’re only performing for one night, they’re here the week prior and will be using those rooms all the time,” explains Nelson City Council’s venue mar-
the court here was right for them. The court floor has been completely refurbished, there was a period over last winter when I came in and there were several workmen on their hands and knees hand-nailing the wood down, it took a couple of weeks. It made me realise just how well cared for this floor is.” At the northern end of the court is a brand-new balcony, installed as a means of access for the audience to the east and west seating stands, as well as being the perfect vantage point for team coaches, sound and lighting techniConstruction workers have done a great job in the upgrade of Trafalgar Centre, with a completion date set for April 8. keting officer, Lynette Hartgill. The court has also seen some major changes. “Historically, there was a lot of taping for lots of different sports but what we’ve done is refine it to just basketball and netball,” says Lynette. “That taping can be changed to fit other sports that use the court, but because this is the home of the Giants it was really important that

This is the northern extension and is an area that has been completely transformed from its original layout. “In the past, the entrance was located on the western side of the building
and when you came into the lobby, the Victory rooms were on one side and the stadium on the other,” says Lynette. “What we’ve done is open up the space to make it more versatile, lighter, brighter and more userfriendly. We’ve also put a brand-new kitchen into this space. Historically the kitchen for the centre was in the main arena, under the seats on the

The kitchen is the exact same size as the original and can cater to 250 people, although with additional equipment brought in for larger events, the creation of satellite kitchens around the centre could allow catering for up to 600 people. The best thing about the centre is that it can be split into two completely separate venues, so while a wedding expo runs in the stadium, a community gathering could be underway
in the foyer area simultaneously. “Nelsonians love enjoying the outdoors, so we wanted the northern extension to have the ability to open up on a beautiful day, allowing people to go out into Rutherford Park,” says Rachel. “There’s a lot of work going on regarding landscaping and planning of the park so that there’s almost a seamless association between the park and the centre.”

Even the carpark has undergone a massive makeover to create an easy flow for vehicles entering and leaving the site. With room for 200 cars, the car park also features space for five coaches, with a handy turn around area at the northern end of the centre. “We really thought about connecting the centre with the city and the value of the Maitai Walkway. walk across the bridge and walkways to connect with both venues” says Rachel. In September last year council organised an open day, giving locals their first look at the centre since it closed. “We were really heartened by the open day, it was overwhelmingly positive. We had around 1000 visitors and people wanted to say how excited they were about the centre being finished. There is clearly a sense of ownership in the community that this is their space,” says Rachel. In early March a dawn blessing was held and on April 8 council will hold a family day for locals, which also marks the end of the upgrade project and contractors are working hard to make sure they are finished by this target date. “The great thing about the family day is that a lot of the spaces that weren’t ready to be

If it’s a beautiful day, we’ll have performers and activities happening in Rutherford Park, kids will be able to shoot hoops with the Giants and we’ll finish the day with a big screen showing of Finding Dory,” says Rachel.
The day will begin at 2pm with the ribbon cutting taking place at 3pm. “Gibbons’ and Opus’ teams and all the contractors here have been incredible and worked extremely well together, balancing events and construction for quite a while,” says Rachel.

“There have been over 100 contractors that have worked on this building, the majority of them from this region, so I really hope some of the workmen will come to the family day and show their families what they’ve been part of. They can feel very proud of their contribution to our region.” Trafalgar Centre already has some great entertainment scheduled for this year and enquiries
are coming in daily from promoters around the country who can see the potential in the building. With the family day scheduled for this weekend, later on in April the centre will be proudly hosting Dave Dobbyn for his Slice of Heaven – 40 years of Hits tour, Dr Hook starring Dennis Locorriere will be performing there in May, Urzila Carlson will be bringing her Studies Have Shown show here in June, after which the centre will be back hosting local events including Art Expo Tradesmen from Gibbons, from top left, James Riordan, Jamie McIntosh, Nigel Dayman and Allan Bennett. EED!! !! ! ! Richmond Wood & Coal What makes Richmond Wood & Coal the leading supplier? Baz Newport has been in the timber industry nearly all his working life and his experience means there’s nothing he doesn’t know about wood. The friendly, knowledgeable staff are also on hand to help you make the right decision about what type of dry, seasoned wood best suits your needs. Local au-
Tyreworld
thorities recommend you buy your firewood from a “Good Wood” supplier, such as Richmond Wood & Coal, in order to get maximum performance from your log burner or open fire this winter.
What products do you have available? Now is the perfect time to buy your winter firewood and Richmond Wood & Coal has a great supply of seasoned wood
blocks, kindling and coal.
How can I get my firewood home? Customers are welcome to pop into the Beach Rd yard and fill up their trailer or ute with wood. Baz and the team also offer the use of courtesy trailers, or to make things as hassle free as possible, they’ll deliver your wood right to your door at a time that’s convenient for you.
My tyres have just passed a WOF, are they going to last me 12 months to the next one? Not necessarily, the warrant of fitness will only measure them and pass them as legal on the day, so if your tyres are close to the limit, there is a good chance they will have worn down to an unsafe level before your next WOF. Now is the best time, with win-
ter coming, to make sure your tyres are at a safe level, so come in and get a free tyre check from the team at Tyreworld today.
Is a more expensive tyre necessarily going to last longer? No, some very expensive tyres are made of soft compounds for grip and will not last very long at all. It’s best to come in and talk to the Tyreworld
team about what tyres will best suit your driving needs.
Why should I choose Tyreworld? As a team, they have 40 years combined experience in the industry. Daryl Smith has owned and operated the business for more than 10 years and they have a great location that’s close to the shops.

Rotoiti Powerboat Club members Andy Morris, Patrick Morris and Craig Merrion recorded an emotional result when they secured the top three placings in the Duffy’s Cup at the club’s annual regatta on Lake Rotoiti. Duffy’s Cup was named in honour of Richmond sporting identity and power boat enthusiast Michael Du Feu, who sadly passed away late last month. Michael had been a regular crew member for Andy, his son Patrick and Craig, so it was fitting that the trio stood on the podium after the final race of the two-race event at the weekend. “It meant a lot to us,” Andy says. “Duffy was a great crew member and always liked the shore starts because he could stand in the water and hold the boats.” The Rotoiti Club had a successful regatta with Chris Du Feu showing superior speed around the buoys to win the Railway Cup in his Formula 3 boat, Dark Horse. Chris won both heats. Hope’s Julian Stillwell featured in the crowd favourite Fulton Hogan King Of the Lake Beach race finishing second in his Formula 1 boat Johnston and Associates to Raymond Hart in The Boss. Wayne Wells impressed in his first outing in Terminator in the Grand National races.

Holly Chandler, left, and Natasha Bannister have been selected for the national under-23 volleyball team. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.
Volleyballers make national team Simon Bloomberg Two Tasman volleyball players have taken very different paths on their way to gaining selection for the New Zealand under-23 women’s team to play at the Asian championships in Thailand. Holly Chandler and Natasha Bannister, both 19, made the 12-player squad after attending trials for the national team in Auckland earlier this year. The team heads to Nakhon Ratchasima in Thailand for next month’s Asian championship which is also a world qualifying tournament. Natasha’s selection is a continuation of the rapid progress she has made in the sport since she started playing seriously just two years ago. The former Tapawera Area School student played for the Nelson College for Girls B team after moving into town in 2015 before graduating to the A team last year.

Natasha also made the national under-19 that played in the Asia champs at Nakhon Ratchasima last year and, although she is still eligible for the under-19 team, made another big step up when she was named in the under-23 team. Interestingly, she says the volleyball courts in Nakhon Ratchasima are located on the fifth floor of a giant shopping mall. “I’d played socially when I was at Tapawera and only started playing seriously two years ago but I picked it up really quickly,” Natasha says. “I wanted to play volleyball because it’s a really good team game and it was a new challenge.” Natasha’s emergence as a top volleyballer has also attracted the attention of overseas coaches and she is presently in negotiations with colleges in the US where she hopes to secure a sporting scholarship. In contrast, Holly has been playing volleyball since she

was a year 10 student and has been a regular in national beach and indoor age-group teams. The talented passerhitter was always going to be in contention for further national honours this year although she only just made it after a serious ankle injury very nearly spiked her ambitions of making the under-23 team. Holly says she couldn’t have recovered so quickly without help from her father Lyndon, who is a physiotherapist and former top 800m runner. Lyndon not only provided all the necessary intensive treatment, he also encouraged his daughter to stay positive and continue training despite the disappointment of being sidelined. Holly and Natasha will be attending a training camp with the national under-23 team in Christchurch at Easter before heading to Thailand for the May 13-21 tournament.

Nelson pip WOB in thrilling finish as Wanderers go down to Marist Poor option taking and struggles at the breakdown combined to see Waimea Old Boys fall by the narrowest of margins to Nelson in their NPD Tasman Trophy senior rugby encounter at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Star and Garter Waimea created more than enough chances to take the win – they had a try ruled out for obstruction and head-turning fullback Eli Kneepkens missed his first kick at goal in two games when trying to convert a try with two minutes remaining. Star and Garter WOB coach Mark Milne says his team battled at the breakdown and were
not composed enough when needed. “They were good over the ball and were better prepared for the breakdown. “We were also too high in contact at times. “There were particular areas of the field that we didn’t execute well.” A positive was winger Mo Tau scoring twice while former Waimea College captain Jeremy Lordan also dotted down. Mark says lock Lee McBrydie played well and Dan Hytongue had a high work rate in the backs. “We rely on Lee every week to give us a solid effort.”
Mark says the team continues to improve with each week. WOB A face Wanderers at Brightwater on Saturday. In other division one matches, Marist beat Wanderers 42-25 and Kahurangi edged Stoke 3231. Marist had the game won at half time when it led 28-6. Wanderers performed better in the second-half when it narrowed the margin to 10 points but it was too little, too late. WOB B were defaulted to by Nelson due to a lack of numbers. The two teams still played a friendly match with WOB winning 70-3.

Duck shooters will be hitting the clay on Sunday.
Duck shooters chance to get their eye in The Nelson Waimea Gun Club will be holding its annual Duck Shooters 80 Target Event at Golden Downs on Sunday. Club president Wesley Oldham says the event, which has been running for more than a decade, usually attracts more than 80 shooters of all ages and experience levels. The clay target simulated event allows people to shoot in teams of five or six with more than $1500 worth of prizes up for grabs from The Gun Shop Motueka, Hunting and Fishing and Fish and Game. “It’s a good chance for people to socialise and meet other people who enjoy rifle shooting plus we have groups that make a day of it,” Wesley says. The Gun Shop Motueka owner Neil Simpson says he’s been an active member of the club for many
years and he believes the event has stood the test of time. “It’s a great way for duck shooters to get their eye in while having a great day out and we enjoy being part of it.” All major prizes are awarded at random which means anyone, regardless of skill level can walk away with a prize. “It’s a good chance for hunters to get used to their guns and give them a go in a non-competitive environment before the duck shooting season gets underway.” The event is open to all ages, from supervised children to vastly experienced shooters. People can sign up on Sunday morning with the event getting underway at 9am at the Waimea Nelson Gun Club Grounds on Valley Rd, Golden Downs.

Or automotive technician, car specialist, technician. Whatever we call you, the skills we’re after are the same. This is a full time permanent role. We insist on honesty, a good skill level on both petrol and light diesel, a motivated person who is always trying to do things better! A positive attitude and a good sense of humour also would be a requirement. And if you are WOF qualified all the better however we would be happy to train the right person. We offer a good variety of work in a family owned and operated, well branded and busy workshop. We are centrally located in sunny Richmond. Our business also incorporates a break down service and specialty fields such as wheel alignments. We also change the oil and spark plugs on Mums ole 1984 Mitsubishi with low kms! We offer above average wages to the right person and would like to bring someone on who’s ready to settle down. There is also opportunity for advancement for the right person. If you are from out of town we would also be happy to discuss some help in moving here. First things first, contact us and we can take it from there. Phil on 0274 327 814 phil@nichollsauto.com
