No to Easter trading The Tasman District Council has decided Easter Sunday should remain a non-trading day in the district. Thursday’s decision comes after an informal feedback period, in which online and telephone surveys were used to gauge public sentiment about Easter Sunday trading. Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne said the results of the surveys were mixed, with online poll results contrasting with the results of a telephone survey. “In the self-selecting online survey, which attracted 1421 responses, 62 per cent were opposed to Easter Sunday trading. In the random selection telephone survey of 595 Nelson and Tasman residents, 55 per cent were supportive of Easter Sunday trading. “That result did not provide us a compelling reason

to change the status quo, in which Easter Sunday is a non-trading day for most shops. “Add that to that a consultation process demanded by such a policy change would cost ratepayers approximately $20,000 with the very real possibility of an outcome being very similar to the previous surveys we had to ask, why go there? “The Council therefore decided in favour of retaining Easter Sunday as one of the few guaranteed days off for most retail and hospitality workers to spend with family. “The reason we are considering the issue of Easter Sunday trading at all is because the Government has devolved the responsibility of deciding whether to allow shops to open to local councils.”

Hope brothers top South Island stock car podium Jody Scott Nelson brothers Keightley and Cody Teece topped the podium on their home track at the South Island Stock Car champs at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway on Saturday night. Keightley has been the form driver of the season so far and avoided the carnage around him to win his first South Island title. Cody won the title three years ago, but couldn’t catch his brother who sliced through the 30 car field with ease. Brad Neiman was another looking quick through qualifying but was halted in the second final heat by Troy Currie, ending his title chances.

Other causalities included Levi Collier who was rolled in the opening corner of the first final heat. He returned next race to end up rolling Dunedin driver Nathan Taylor. Tony Frost had issues with his car all night, Brian Austin picked up a heat win and won the opening final’s race but came in for some attention in heat two. The best of the visitors was George Watson from Greymouth but he couldn’t make up places with a couple of Nelson blockers keeping him busy in the final heat. Tim Ross, fresh off teams racing wins with the KB Cowboys ran consistently all night and finished in third place overall. There was

plenty of action with several roll overs and a few cars were looking pretty second-hand by the end of the night. Round three of War of the Wings provided some fast racing early on but as the night went on roll overs dominated the races. There was plenty of carnage in the final heats with some sore drivers ending their nights in spectacular fashion Consistency from series leader Luke Keegan saw him extend his series lead. The local drivers did extremely well with Steve Sullivan winning the opening race from Greg Teece and then Kris Gerard picked up the win in the second heat, Greg finished second in the fea-

ture race. The productions ran their Trackman Trophy round, with the win going to Dave Leitch with Jono Sutton finishing second while a coin toss went the way of Joseph Sutton over Geoff Watson for third after running out of race time. The Nelson Tigers were away racing in Christchurch where they won against the Glen Eagles to retain the McCall Trophy but lost to the Gisborne Gladiators in their second race. Racing takes a break until after Christmas with the next meeting on December 27, while January sees the New Zealand Midget Title and Sprint Car GP mid-month.

Anthony says that houses over $1 million usually take longer to sell, but not recently, “which is different from previous years”. “I had one home that was on the market for $1.1 million and sold before the first open home. That was pretty rare for a property at that price to go so quickly.” Overall, the sales in Nelson have topped $400 million and, if you include Tasman’s $363 million, the wider region looks set to push the $1billion mark for the first time, with figures from November and December still to be included. Last year, house sales from the final two months of the year in

The number of million dollar homes sold in Nelson has jumped more than 800 per cent in the past three years, as Nelson house prices rise faster than anywhere else in the country. In 2013 there were three homes sold in Nelson worth $1 million or more, so far this year there have been 28, with another 16 in Tasman, according to information released to Waimea Weekly by REINZ. That is helping push the total value of homes sold in Nelson and Tasman towards $1 billion for the first time, as well as a rise in house values which have increased by more than 15 per cent year-on-year. The number of million dollar homes selling hasn’t surprised Bayleys Real Estate agent Anthony Carppe, who says the price rise is being driven by a lack of stock. “The stock is the problem, there’s roughly a third less stock on the market and that throws the sale prices out and the average time of sale out, and it doesn’t take long be-

Opinion: TDC too quick on Easter trading The logic, or rather lack of it, behind the Tasman District Council’s decision not to allow trading on Easter Sunday is a little bewildering. The Shop Trading Hours Amendment Act, which passed in August, gave councils the power to allow shops to open on Easter Sunday. Although the majority of councils throughout New Zealand have deferred any decisions until 2017, Tasman voted last week to retain the status quo and keep shops closed.

Mayor Richard Kempthorne explained that the results of two informal surveys used to gauge public sentiment about Easter Sunday trading produced contrasting results. The online survey showed that 62 per cent were against allowing trading on Easter Sunday while the independent telephone survey showed 55 per cent were in support. Richard says that “did not provide us a compelling reason to change the status quo, in which Easter Sunday is a non-trading

day for most shops”. What he should have said was that the results of both surveys were invalid because they were so statistically flawed that they actually weren’t worth doing at all. You don’t need to be a statistician to know that open access, self-selecting on-line surveys are not representative, reliable or scientific and that even a random

survey needs to be carefully designed and weighted to make it representative of the target population. But the biggest mistake council made wasn’t making a decision based on questionable survey results, it was ignoring the people who are most impacted by Easter trading - the store owners and their staff. Why didn’t council ask them what they think of trading on Easter Sunday? It’s also disconcerting that Tasman made the decision indepen-

dently of the Nelson City Council when the only really valuable response in the two surveys was that people wanted the NelsonTasman region to adopt a unified approach to Easter trading. Tasman district councillors have ignored that feedback and missed an opportunity to work closely with Nelson City Council on a regional issue. It will be interesting to see what the Nelson City Council decides when it discusses the issue of Easter trading on December 15.

TOY RUN: Armed with the club’s mascot, Horatio the Hog, Nelson riders Raewyn Brown and Alan Dickens joined over 200 others on the road for the annual Ulysses Toy Run on Saturday. Travelling up Queen St, through Stoke and then down Trafalgar St to Trafalgar Centre, club coordinator Jenny Magee says they turned a lot of heads, inspired a lot of smiles and had a lot of support, especially down Nelson’s main street. In its 31st year, the toy run, held by the Nelson Ulysses Club fund-raises for the Salvation Army, collecting toys and donations from riders and the public. Photo: Brittany Spencer.

Neighbourhood Support needs help Neighbourhood Support Waimea has received some limited interim funds enabling the group to re-instate coordinator Marty Price on a parttime basis. Marty is working 10 hours per week, instead of the usual 20 hours, and his work is restricted to office-based duties and further fund-raising. The group is grateful to all those people who have made donations either in person or through the Give a Little Page and is seeking the help of a volunteer fund-raiser so Marty to undertake the more hands-on duties. Anyone who can help please contact the group’s chairperson Glenys Della Bosca on 544 5756 or 544 6210 or text 021 176 0495. Hospice trees A Tree of Remembrance has been installed in the Farmers store in the Richmond Mall to help raise funds for the Nelson Tasman Hospice. People can support the hospice by donating or by purchasing a specially designed hand-painted bauble for just $10. Although this is part of a national hospice fund-raising campaign for Farmers, as part of Farmers Caring Connections initiative, all funds raised stay in the region. Earthquake meetings The Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Management group is holding a public meeting in the New Life Centre on Wensley Rd in Richmond on Thursday to discuss earthquake responses in the aftermath of the Kaikoura earthquake. It will cover current tsunami maps, what people should do, what to expect in the way of a warning and what is the best preparation. Group controller Roger Ball says they had a large number of comments and phone calls to their office after the November quake and it is apparent there is not a good understanding of what people should do and where they can get information from in the advent of an earthquake. The meeting starts at 6pm. All welcome.

There’s also something in it for the retailers, with the shop that issues the winning entry receiving a $1000 cash bonus from the Waimea Weekly.

.CO.NZ Annesbrook family loses home/pet dog: An Annesbrook family have been left without a home and their pet dog after their house burnt down last night in a fire which the local fire service are saying could have been stopped sooner. The Cawthron Crescent house belonged to a woman and her two daughters who were away from home when the fire began late last night. The Nelson command unit and six fire appliances from Stoke, Richmond and Nelson were called out to the fire around 9pm which originated in the far right corner of the house. While the family were unharmed and away from their house when the fire started, neighbours and fire officers say the family’s pet dog was trapped inside the house and did not make it out.

says Vinnies is the only organisation in Richmond which delivers Christmas hampers and distributes food parcels throughout the year. “The families are always so delighted to receive the hampers that it makes giving a privilege,” Peter says. “We have a whole team of dedicated volunteers who give so much of their time to ensure that families are looked after all through the year and at Christmas we try to make a spe-

cial effort for these families.” Peter says the business community, including Proper Chips and The Warehouse, also helped out with generous donations. Contributions have also been received from the Convent Girls Past Pupils Association. If anyone wants to make donations for these hampers they can deliver them to the St Vincent de Paul shop, 11A McGlashen Avenue behind the Richmond Library car park.

One of Club Waimea’s originals passes away Simon Bloomberg Ross Barnes believed there was no such word as ‘can’t’, which isn’t surprising considering he wasn’t even expected to live past his early childhood years after being born with a brain tumour. Not only did Ross defy the surgeon who sent the young boy “home to die” after surgery to remove the tumour, he went on to live a full and interesting life, making a significant contribution to all the communities he lived in during his 85 years. Ross, who passed away in Nelson on November 24, was born in Greymouth on March 28, 1931,

the youngest of a family of seven with five sisters and one brother. He attended Rununga School “intermittently because of illhealth and lack of interest” before following his father into the coal mines that were such a big part of life on the West Coast. However, Ross was forced to change careers after a serious injury to his hand and arm suffered in the mines. He subsequently worked in a pie cart, on farms and driving a bread van before starting a longer-term job as a linesman with the Greymouth Electric Power Board. Although Ross may have been initially frustrated that the injury

he suffered in the mines prohibited him from playing contact sports like rugby league, it led to an interest in swimming which quickly turned into a life-long passion. In 1959, Ross founded the Kotuku Surf Life Saving Club, which has honoured him by naming one of their rescue boats The Ross Barnes, where he coached and mentored hundreds of young West Coasters including famous Kiwi rugby league player Kevin Dixon. When Ross and Jo moved to Richmond in 1971, he continued his involvement in swimming, teaching children at Henley School to swim for 12 years. Ross’

Santa will be in the Richmond Mall from Thursday to meet young children and pose for photos. He will also be available for a private session with special needs children on December 12.

Sensitive Santa to see special children Santa arrives in the Richmond Mall on Thursday to listen to children’s wish lists and pose for photos leading up to Christmas, but this year he is holding an extra special session for some very special children. Sensitive Santa will be holding a private session in mall on Monday December 12, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, when he will meet and talk with special needs children. A photographer will be available to take photos but mall manager Belinda de Clercq says that’s optional and people can just take a selfie instead. “We thought we’d do something for the special needs children and

our Santa was all for it,” Belinda says. “We’ll see how much of a response we get and may do it again if it’s very popular.” Judging by the feedback on the Richmond Mall’s Facebook page, Sensitive Santa should prove to be a big hit. Belinda Riordan posted “this is great” while Anna Costello says “so pleased you decided to do it”. Kimberly Martin posted “this is awesome Richmond Mall.” Belinda says parents and caregivers don’t need to book and just have to turn up with their children at Santa’s sled near the entrance to Farmers on Monday between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

New manager for Cancer Society Jessie Johnston

Michelle Hunt may not have experience in the health sector but her passion for volunteering and personal experience with cancer has made her the perfect choice for manager of Nelson Cancer Society. “Before this position I worked 19 years in the fishing industry, 16 years with Sealord and three years with Talleys, but I also did a lot of volunteer work in the community,” she says. Unfortunately, it was the passing of Michelle’s father in May this year, after a short battle with cancer, that caused her to put herself forward for the job. “It made me reflect on life, what I was passionate about, and I realised that I got my drive and my passion Michelle from my volunteer work so I Hunt decided that I’d love to work for a non-profit organisation. "Luckily, a few months later I saw this position.” Starting on Monday last week, Michelle has already embraced the role of manager, having visited the oncology and chemotherapy suites at Nelson Hospital and meeting with those currently battling cancer through the centre's regular support groups.

PENKETH PROPERTY LAW

Anger of misplaced trolleys: Is it my old age or complete intolerance when it comes to the treatment of the common shopping trolley? The Richmond Mall as well as other businesses, in the area, provide plenty of areas to park their trolleys when customers have finished with them. What a joke! Trolleys are left anywhere without any thought of returning them to a base. They are found anywhere in Richmond or the mall car park, just left where shoppers have parked or decided they have finished with them. Pure ignorance I say. Perhaps the same method should be applied that applies in the UK where you pay a coin deposit to free the trolley and only regain that coin when you return trolley to a base or original point of where you obtained said trolley. Who knew you needed a chef to cook a Christmas dinner! Guess since we don't have one in our house we wont get Christmas dinner either. No wait, we use common sense and cook it like our mums and dads did, we do it ourselves. Anne Becconsall. What does the actual mayor of Nelson say? There wasn't one quote by her in this article. Considering it is the Mayors' Christmas Dinner. And everyone knows if it's for the council's function they'd find the solution, no matter what the cost. Rayon Mackenzie. Tasman says no to Easter trading: Good, this gives most workers a day off. Dale Boyce. Great decision Christine O’Connell. Living in the past. Mike Roberts. I think we can all manage a few days a year without shops and hopefully enjoy family time. Well done TDC. Nikki Ryan. The decision should be optional, open or don’t open, no fines included. Roger Doran. St Arnaud crash kills one: Just about got cleaned out yesterday not far from Wash Bridge. Truck on wrong side of the

road. I think we need some cops about, crazy. The amount of holes in the road after two weeks is unreal and as for the patch up jobs being done just a waste of time and money. Richard Breakspear. The sad thing is, all this is the ripple effect if the quake. The roads were not built for that volume of traffic. They are getting chewed up now. The trucking companies need to also relax their time schedules as no one can go fast safely. It’s not even peak season for holiday makers yet, so imagine tourists added to this and people towing caravans. An absolute nightmare for all. Imperative now to reduce speed limits. Control where trucks can park up too as they reduce visibility for all. And don’t forget the impact on Nelson roads. Rocks Rd and Tahunanui Dr are now main routes for truckers. This will damage roads too. Traffic has increased in a week yet we still don’t have our holiday makers, it will only get worse. Everyone has to be aware of the extra road dangers now. Shelley Bishop. Pet killed in house fire: I am so sorry to hear that my thoughts and prayers are with this family at this horrible time. Lisa Salmond. RIP, furry family member. Sounds like you were a brave soul. So sorry to read this. Mandy Thomas. Email editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Kindies help out Kaikoura Simon Bloomberg Children at Pinegrove Kindergarten in Brightwater joined kindies around Nelson and Tasman and wore blue and had their faces painted the same colour on Friday as part of a fund-raiser for kindies and schools affected by the Kaikoura earthquake. Blue Day was organised by Stoke kindergarten mum Phylippa Squires who has a close connection with the Kaikoura area. Phylippa’s parents live on a farm on the banks of the Hapuka River near Kaikoura and so she was keen to do something to help out the quake victims. “We asked the parents to dress their children in blue to represent the sea and bring a gold coin to help the children at all the kindies and pre-schools and schools in Kaikoura,” Phylippa says. “All the children here felt the earthquake and we’ve been talking to them about and they were quite concerned. “We talked to them about things, like all the toys being broken at the kindies in Kaikoura, so they could really relate to it. They know why we are doing the Blue Day appeal.” Phylippa says the fund-raiser

Children, teachers and parents at Pinegrove Kindergarten in Brightwater raised funds for the children of Kaikoura on Friday as part of the Blue Day Appeal. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. gathered quite a bit of momentum with a number of other kindies, pre-schools and schools around the region taking part. “I emailed about 100 kindies,

pre-schools and schools to ask them to help out with Blue Day and they are doing things like coin trails and mufti-days. It’s too early to know how much it raised

because not everyone did it on Friday but we raised $107 and I know the Brook Kindergarten raised $75 and Nayland Primary had a coin trail and raised $400.”

Phylippa says any kindies, preschools and schools who want to take part in Blue Day can email her at phylippa21@hotmail.com for more information.

Hello Readers, I do hope that you are all looking forward to a lovely warm and sunny Christmas, it must be the sun’s turn to be kind to us all and become part of our holiday plans. I was in Hokitika last week and the year to date rainfall is 5 metres, note that it is measured in metres and not millimetres like we do here. That’s a lot of precipitation in one year but there are benefits as well, everything down that way is looking lovely with lots of grass for the dairy cows and water storage facilities full. Real estate listings and enquiry is still strong and will probably be that way right up to the Christmas time. There are buyers planning to incorporate buying property over the holiday period so be prepared to have your home shown. It goes without saying that we will make sure that you have plenty of notice of pending viewings. The shops are getting busy, try not to stress out, Christmas is about family and happy times. Best Regards

Lydia

For 45 years Toastmasters Nelson Club has been helping people improve their ability to speak in public and is set to celebrate the milestone. Part of the international organisation, Toastmasters Nelson Club is one of three in the Nelson area. “The pattern I see is that a Toastmaster moves to a new area and then realises that there’s no Toastmasters club there, so they initiate one,” says Nelson Club’s Kelvin Woodley. “They always start essentially for the same reason - people see a need to improve their ability to speak in public situations, that’s why we all join and that’s why clubs are started in the first place.” With clubs all around the globe, Nelson Club often welcomes overseas visitors while members within the Nelson group have enjoyed the hospitality of international clubs and others around New Zealand. Kelvin has been a member of the Nelson Club for around 10 years and says he attributes his current job as principal of Tapawera School to the skills he has learned through Toastmasters. “I’ve learned things about working with my staff, difficult conversations I have to have, it's improved my ability to respond thoughtfully and appropriately and my levels of anxiety are way less than they used to be,” says Kelvin. “I wanted to get better at randomly talking to people, not necessarily the public

Personally, I have been on the stage in small ways ever since I was quite young so that side of it wasn’t so unfamiliar to me, what was unfamiliar was presenting my own words.” Toastmasters Nelson Club’s 45 year anniversary will be held on Monday, December 12, from 7pm, in their regular meeting room at the Hearing House, 354 Trafalgar Square, Nelson. ADVERTORIAL

A clear solution to better vision If you’re one of the many people who rely on glasses or contacts to view the world, laser eye surgery can provide a life-changing return to freedom. The team at Wellington Eye Centre have been offering that freedom since 2009 and say it’s becoming even more attractive thanks to advanced procedures introduced by their specialist ophthalmologist, Dr Andrew Logan. Dr Logan’s been pioneering the latest technologies in New Zealand for the last 22 years, always looking for the absolute best solutions for vision correction. Most recently, he’s found that in SMILE – a minimally invasive keyhole procedure that removes the complications that may have discouraged some people from having laser vision correction in the past. SMILE is the most advanced form of laser eye surgery currently available in the world and was introduced to New Zealand by Dr Logan in 2014. It uses a single German-made

precision laser to reshape the cornea – the front surface of the eye – without compromising its integrity. Excellent results have been reported by surgeons all over the world and opened up the opportunity for better vision to even more patients. “Each one of the procedures we offer offers its own advantages. What’s exciting about SMILE is that the visual results are just as good as LASIK, the predictability and stability is even better, and the eye is stronger and safer afterwards”, says Dr Logan. “People are able to return to unrestricted normal activities, including water sports, just six days after surgery. For people with active lifestyles, this can make all the difference.” This focus on people is another advantage offered by Wellington Eye Centre.Working behind Dr Logan is an

entire team of skilled and experienced staff who are dedicated to providing information, answering questions, and ensuring patients are supported throughout the entire process. Suitability assessments can be performed by your local optometrist, while the actual procedure takes place at Dr Logan’s Wellington surgery. Nelson patients are offered free boutique hotel accomodation in Wellington for themselves and their partner, organised and paid for by the Eye Centre. Many patients take this as an opportunity to relax and do a little sightseeing while they’re there, thanks to the incredibly fast recovery time. The procedure itself is painless and only takes a few minutes, and most patients are thrilled to report they’re feeling great at the follow-up appointment the next day. Complimentary follow-up care continues with your local optometrist for a year afterwards to help patients adapt to their new vision and to ensure it’s an entirely positive experience. Before doing this Give it A Go Girl challenge, if someone had asked me what a wheel, dancer, warrior and the ocean have in common, I wouldn’t have had the foggiest idea. However, according to the team at Moana SUP, the answer is paddleboard yoga. Paddleboard or SUP yoga is the latest fitness craze, combining the calm serenity and fluidity of yoga postures, or asana, with the added challenge of balancing on the evermoving water. Now, I am probably the worst person to do yoga, I’m a busy body who loves moving, I’m not so good at just being still and I tend to get the giggles at the most inappropriate times. We arrived at Tahunanui Beach and my instructor Kelly Gill-Brydon gave me the run down. It was less than ideal conditions, windy and choppy, but in my book that means fun. Normally SUP yoga is done first thing in the morning when it is really flat, and after a few sec-

After hooking up to the buoy, we started with some sun salutations, focusing on our breathing and opening up our body, the sun was gloriously warm and it was peaceful. Unfortunately, I broke the bliss with giggles as soon as we did the first asana. The pose, threading the needle, consisted of me twisting underneath myself and, while it wasn’t particularly hard, for someone who has not done yoga and is not used to having their bum sticking straight up in the air, I felt comically uncoordinated and slightly self conscious. Thus the giggles began, making unexpected appearances throughout the session. We went through several

down, bums up. At this stage it must be said that, as unfamiliar as it was, I loved every minute and had stayed on my board. It probably wasn’t as blissful and quiet as your regular SUP yoga classes, but it was fun and I discovered I had retained some of the gymnast flexibility I had once worked so hard for. After moving through more asanas and getting into the rhythm of things Kelly suggested we head to the shallows and put my balance and flexibility to the ultimate test with some more advanced moves. I failed miserably and fell in the water during almost every attempt at the advanced moves. I did, however, manage a milestone, I somehow convinced my body to cooperate long enough to do my very first freestanding headstand. To try out SUP yoga for yourself, get in touch with Kelly and the team at Moana SUP, or one of the other local companies that offer it.

Looking for laying hens? Happy, healthy, free-range Brown Shaver pullets.

15 weeks @ $25 each

While the unsettled weather may have caused some disruption to the harvest schedule, Wakefield based Golden Bay Contracting Tasman is pleased with the outcome of the season so far and is now beginning to make hay. The team is proud to be able to offer round or conventional hay bales in small, medium and large sizes, including wrapped bales thanks to their brand-new baler and wrapper. Featuring the latest technology, their Inagra wrapper is the first to come into the Tasman area and groups bales to eliminate manual handling. Small bales of hay or haylage are perfect for lifestyle blocks and the equestrian community as they are easy to handle, plus, haylage does not need shed storage, has a higher nutritional value than hay and is an economical option when compared to grain feeds. Collecting farm fresh eggs from your own hens is hugely satisfying but if yours have not come back into the lay yet this summer, it may be time to ‘refresh’ your laying flock with some young pullets. Appletons always has brown shaver pullets at the start of their laying lives which are well grown, well fed and raised in hen houses with access to green paddocks. While you’re there, pick up the Appletons step on feeder and easy care drink-

er to ensure a ready supply of fresh food and water. Appletons currently has 15-weekold pullets available, a great age to get your new girls as it gives them time to settle into their new home and routine before they come into the lay between 18-24 weeks. Phone Appletons today on 542 3224. With a new on-road sales manager on board, Stihl Shop Richmond is fully equipped to provide the top of the South with great products and services. Owning stock comes with the responsibility of maintaining their health and wellbeing and for those with sheep, that means doing your best to prevent and treat fly strike. Signs of this include the animal nibbling at its wool, stamping feet, twitching tails and dark patches seen on the white fleece. Occurring commonly around the tail end, on the back line, the belly, around the pizzle and between the ears of rams after fighting, fly strike can be prevented with shearing and dipping with effective insecticides. Animals with fly strike must be clipped around the affected area and treated with insecticide, as well as a a Zinc based sunscreen product to protect any exposed skin. I was determined to make a product that was easy to use and made sanding obsolete.” Simon is Kiwi-born and bred and as a dairy farmer’s son he was taught at a young age to work things out, rather than to accept things as they are. Just a thought... It was Thanksgiving Day in the US two weeks ago and it is one of the most celebrated days in their calendar. The importance and power of an attitude of gratitude has prompted me to express just a few thoughts about the benefits of a national day of thanksgiving or even better still try making every day a day to give thanks. Some of the most inspirational people are those who have expe-

rienced extreme disappointment, tragedy or loss and yet have never become bitter or ungrateful. Helen Keller, who was blind and deaf for most of her life, said “I thank God for my handicaps, for through them I have found myself, my work and my God.” A good friend who recently lost a long battle with cancer said that the illness had been a journey that had brought him closer to God, to his family and some

of the best years of his marriage. Even on a bad day he learned to still count his blessings. The internationally acclaimed Soviet author and Nobel Prize winner, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, who spent years in prison in Siberia said “Bless you prison, bless you for being in my life. For there, lying upon the rotting prison straw, I came to realise that the object of life is not prosperity as we are made to believe, but the maturity

can mean the difference between of the human soul.” Having an attitude of gratitude or living in misery or joy and it is having a thankful heart is a key in fact a medically proven path to achieving greater to successful living and health and happiness. is a prominent theme This has been demthroughout the scriponstrated in many tures. The Apostle Paul research studies that who suffered more grateful people sleep than most, having better, have better marbeen beaten with rods, riages, earn more, are stoned, shipwrecked, more successful and falsely imprisoned yet live longer. Gratitude he was able to say “Be Ross Ferguson makes you feel better, thankful in all circumRichmond Comlook better and consestances, for this is the munity Church quently you will find will of God for you...” No matter what your spiritual or even more people will like you! religious beliefs, being thankful Certainly worth thinking about!

Hope School production hilarious Simon Bloomberg Hope School’s musical comedy had the audience in fits of laughter as pupils acted, sang and danced their way through writer Craig Hawes’ modern take on the legend of merry medieval hero Robin Hood. However, the school production of Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies got off to a slow start with the kindergarten children who attended the final dress rehearsal on Tuesday not understanding the grownup humour. There was a slightly better response when they performed the second show in front of Enner Glynn School but once the adult audience ar-

rived at the matinee on Wednesday, the laughing didn’t stop. “There’s lots of puns and innuendo and it went right over the heads of the kindy children.” teacher and producer Graeme Snell says. “About a dozen or so of the Enner Glynn kids got it so there was some laughing, but the adults at the matinee thought it was hilarious.” Graeme, who produced the show with help from colleague’s Jacqui

Wills, Mel Kern, Katherine McFarland and all 83 of the school’s pupils, says the quality of the acting, singing and dancing, coupled with a humorous storyline and lyrics, made the show a success. He says all the main actors were amazing with Jessie Salmond playing Robin Hood, Tessa Strange as Maid Marion, Annabelle Swain playing the Sheriff of Nottingham and Maia Kininmonth as King John.

Father and son ride 158km for 80th birthday Jacob Page Sports Editor

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Father and son Ted and Kelvin Woodley found a novel way to celebrate Ted’s 80th birthday on Saturday – by riding the inaugural 158km Abel Tasman Cycle Challenge with each other. Ted and Kelvin, 57, crossed the line together arm-in-arm after a gruelling ride from Saxton Field and out to Ruby Bay, Motueka, Kaiteriteri and back. “It was bloody hard work, I sat on the back of Kelvin all the way and he did a great job,” Ted says. Ted now lives two hours out of Melbourne and still cycles with a group weekly, but this was a big step up. “I haven’t done a race that long in a long time." A puncture and a broken chain saw Ted come across the line with blood on his forearm and his knee. “The chain came off three times and we had a puncture – when you fall off it makes you look a little mucky,” Ted says.

“The thing I enjoyed most was finishing." The duo were welcomed by family and friends who had travelled

to Nelson for the birthday celebrations. Kelvin says he was proud to do the race with his father and it re-

minded him of when they used to work together on DIY projects in their younger days. “There aren’t many things like this at 57 that you can do with your 80-year-old father.” The duo joked they might now take up an event more gentile, like sailing. Kelvin, the principal at Tapawera Area School, says he had support from people watching the race out on the course. Rightly, Ted finished one second ahead of his son in seven hours 13 minutes and six seconds. Ted finished 352nd out of the more than 400 people who took on the individual ride. Olympic rowing champion Hamish Bond won the race in three hours 51 minutes and 51 seconds. He was more than five minutes clear of his nearest challenger. Nelson’s Tour de France rider George Bennett started his season preparation with sixth, almost 20 minutes behind Hamish. Event organiser John McIntrye confirmed the event would be back next year and he was keen to build on the 600 ‘originals’ who competed in the first event.

Blackjacks happy for second chance Jacob Page Nelson bowler Ali Forsyth says the New Zealand team will look to make the most of their second opportunity at the Bowls World Championships in Christchurch this week. The New Zealand ‘Blackjacks’ have a host of Nelson players with Ali in the men’s triples, Val Edwards and Kirsten Edwards in the women’s fours, Jo Edwards in the women’s singles and Shannon McIlroy in the men’s pairs. All four teams had to settle for bronze medals on week one – all bowing out at the semi-final stage on Friday.. Ali says the team know they are capable of producing quality bowls but they had to do it consistently. “We were all pleased to get ourselves into the medal stages but to all dip out like we did was a bit disappointing.” “I know, for my time, that we had good wins in pool play over Wales and Ireland which

Tasman Bay produced ideal ocean surf ski racing conditions for the 2016 KayakHQ King & Queen of the Bay, where local paddlers dominated the top places in the 17km race from Kaiteriteri to Kina Beach on Sunday. Sunday produced a northerly wind gusting to 20-knots creating waves for the paddlers to chase and ride, making for exciting and strategic racing. The seas, though, did add to the level of challenge which stretched some of the field. The young star of Nelson adventure sport, Cameron Jones, had an exceptional paddle, combining fitness and skill to take line honours and win

the race in 1 hour 25 minutes. In the women’s race, Lisa Morrison had a convincing win by mastering the seas and reaching Kina Beach in 1hr 58min. The doubles race was eventually won by Joe and Jackie MacIntyre, who were tussling for the lead with David Ayre and Naomi Whitehead until the duo stopped to aid a capsised division 4 paddler remount their surfski. David and Naomi were awarded the sportsmanship trophy for their decision. The Queen and King of the Bay titles are awarded to the fastest paddlers on the stopwatch. In the Queen of the Bay race Morrison took the title and the men’s was won by defending champion and pre-race favourite Hadyn Lockie. Previous winner Dan Busch pushed Lockie for the first part of the race but in the latter stages the in-form Lockie pulled away to win by a healthy margin. The 2017 event will be held at the end of summer on a longer course, from Kaiteriteri to Mapua Wharf. Safety Officer for the Tasman Bay Kayak Racing Club, Reid Forrest, commented how well everyone handled the changing conditions and waves.

SportS Football Tasman United have just five points through seven matches of football’s Stirling Sports Premiership after a 4-2 loss to Eastern Suburbs in Auckland on Sunday. Tasman conceded two goals in the final 10 minutes to remain secondto-last on the table.

Cricket Waimea Toi Toi are the first senior cricket team to book a spot in the 110-over final after they drew with Athletic College Old Boys on Saturday. Waimea Toi Toi will play either Stoke-Nayland, who beat Wanderers by one wicket or Nelson College, who beat Wakatu by four wickets in round nine of the competition. Nelson College are away at the national secondary schools tournament.

Golf The Tasman men’s golf team finished the national interprovincial tournament with two wins and four losses, in New Plymouth. Tasman No 1 Ryan Chisnall was the standout for his team during the week, winning five of his six matches. The Tasman women’s team have their turn this week.

Nelson cricketer Saffron Wilson is certainly enjoying her time in the sun. The 14-year-old Nelson College for Girls pupil is currently leading Nelson Cricket’s Most Valuable Player voting after six weeks, beating out several senior Nelson representative players in the process. The MVP rankings combines batting, bowling and fielding attributes to calculate a points score. “I’ve worked on my batting because last year I didn’t play well and I wanted to get my run rate up and get some more speed into my bowling. “I like having a crack against the boys and proving that the girls can score just as many runs as they can.” Saffron plays for Wakatu's under-15 side as a No 3 batter and first change bowler. She had limited opportunities at the bowling crease last season due to a back injury, but now that has healed and the benefits are noticeable. Saffron’s first memory of cricket was as a four-year-old watching

Despite being “hooked” on watching cricket on TV from a young age, it wasn’t until she was about 10 that she tried the game for the first time. “I was more of a netball player and a sprinter.” Saffron has only been dismissed twice so far this year, her best

knock has been an unbeaten 94 where she also snared two for 12 from seven overs against a joint Nelson College and Nelson Prep team. She says she has aspirations to make the White Ferns one day. This season she would like to get triple figures with the bat, but she is also targeting captaining Nelson Under-15s and making

the Central Districts Under-15 girls' team. The regional Central Districts tournament will be played in two weeks. Three Nelson girls made the Central Districts Under-15s and two girls made Central Districts Under-21s last year, proving Nelson continues to produce quality women cricketers.

The snapper season is now in full swing with some fantastic fishing to be had in both Tasman and Golden Bay at the moment. Fish are spread from the deeper depths beyond 30m right into the very shallows, with some monster fish being caught in only a couple of metres of water by those fishermen showing good patience and the ability to remain very quiet. Those fishing in Tasman Bay report that the front of Rabbit Island in eight to

10m of water, and off the Motueka River mouth, have really been fishing well this past week. Golden Bay fisherman report that areas near the Collingwood marine farms and off Patons Rock have been the go-to spots of late. Large schools of kahawai have been feeding right in close near Nelson Harbour, Ruby Bay and Motueka recently, providing great fun and good eating for those getting amongst them.

Sundial Sounds

Event details: Thursday 8 December, 6.00 pm at Richmond New Life Church – Auditorium 85 Wensley Rd, Richmond. As a result of the recent earthquake events affecting Hurunui, Kaikoura and Marlborough people are asking the question – are we prepared? • What is my family plan? • Where do I find information in an emergency? • Have we got enough food and water to last until help arrives? • If we have to evacuate where do we go? • How will I know if I need to evacuate? • Who will help us? Come along to the public meeting, where Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Management will answer all your questions.

Thursday 8 December, 4.30 – 6.30 pm. Need a break from your Christmas shopping or want to simply hang out in the sun and listen to great music? Then head down to Sundial Square and listen to the George FM DJ. The bean bags will be out, so bring a picnic and relax on the grass.
