The Nelson Tasman Hospice Shop in Richmond has been using CCTV to catch shoplifters, but now it’s hoping footage from the security cameras will help

them find a woman who dropped a “substantial” amount of cash in the shop last month. One of the shop’s volunteers found the money on the floor of the busy Queen St shop in the afternoon on February 15. Although the shop was full of customers at the time, manager

Karen Mackenzie–Howe says they were able to see a female customer dropping the cash on the CCTV at around 1.30pm and now they want to find her to return the money. Karen says they notified police about the lost money but decided to “be more proactive” about

finding the woman. They put a notice in the shop window for a couple of weeks and also posted it on Facebook, but so far no one has claimed the money and now they have come to the Waimea Weekly to try and track down the woman. “We went to the police and they

said the money would go to the finder if it wasn’t claimed by a certain time,” Karen says. “The volunteer who found it suggested ‘let’s go to the Weekly to see if they would do a story’ and see if the woman or someone who knows

From four-year-olds to 71-year-olds, competitors in Sunday’s Sport Tasman Muddy Buddy certainly made the most of the sludgy conditions. Around 900 people took part in the popular annual fund-raiser for Tasman School and event organiser Jodie Fa’avae says it was a fantastic day with lots of laughs. “There was a great atmosphere, we had amazing weather, the mud was good and it was nice to see so many children and families taking part,” she says. “Very much, just basic education. In saying that, it is quite hard when you’re used to the other side of the road, as I’ve found myself. If it saves one life its worth it.”

“Definitely, it’s taking the government too long to do something about it. There have been a few incidents that I have witnessed.”

“I think everybody coming into New Zealand should take a test and the speed limit in that area should be dropped. The other problem is people driving too slow.”

“Yes, [things like] which side of the road to drive on, when not to overtake and not taking corners too wide. Our roads are different and people need to understand that.”

A sting on unsafe children’s toys and clothing in Nelson has uncovered some concerning items but the Commerce Commission says, overall, Nelson retailers were “excellent”. The commission was in Nelson and Marlborough last week for four days checking toys, clothing and cots in “cheap stores” like $2 shops, The Warehouse, K-Mart, and second-hand stores. Eight items were bought for closer inspection by the commission, which is charged with enforcing toy standards under the Fair Trading Act. Its competition manager, based in the commission’s Auckland office, John Lyall, says the maximum fine for businesses selling items that breach the

Classic boats visit Lake Rotoiti Jessie Johnston Once again, the New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show attracted the best of the best for two days of impressive boating action. Around 130 clinkers, steam launches, classic motorboats, sailing dinghies and, of course, their owners, made their way to Lake Rotoiti last weekend, including Richard Walker from Richmond. Richard has been involved in helping with the boat show since it began around 18 years ago, and is passionate about classic boats. “Being a boat builder, you see a lot of stuff that’s just so amazing and I’ve always been involved with old boats, I did half my apprenticeship with wooden boats, it’s always fascinated me.” In 2002 he picked up the rotten, un-restorable remains of a 1950s boat from Invercargill. It was one of five that a boat building company down there had manufactured. Instead of trying to piece it back together, Richard took patterns from the boat and built his own replica, named Ripple. “We had little kids [at the time] and I’d always wanted a little boat like this for tearing

Newsinbrief TROLLEY DERBY: The Mike Pero Trolley Derby will be taking on Collingwood St this Saturday, March 11, from 10am to 4pm. The trolley derby is an iconic Nelson event for both participants and spectators alike, providing families a chance to work together on trolley building projects, or just enjoy the spectacle and activities on the day. TUG OF PEACE: The Tug of Peace is back for 2017. The annual fund-raiser for the Nelson Tasman Hospice will be held at the top of Trafalgar Street (between Hardy St and Selwyn Pl) this Thursday, March 9, with a 3:30pm start.

The design and construction of the vessel took around a year as owning a boat repair workshop at the time, Richard was able

to sneak in some work on Ripple around his other projects. Unfortunately, Ripple doesn’t get out much anymore, except for her trips to the annual boat show.

She also didn’t manage to take home any titles, with the Jens Hanson trophy for Best Vessel Overall going to Malolo, owned by Max Cumming and Ra Tangaroa from Russell.

LAND DEAL UPHELD: The Supreme Court ruled the Government must honour a deal dating back to 1841 over Maori land settlements in Nelson. The 4-1 decision in favour of Wakatu descendants found the Crown failed in its duty to preserve a proportion of settlement land for Maori owners. It dates back to the early settlements known as the Nelson Tenths, in which the New Zealand Company purchased land from Maori landowners. The case has been before the courts since 2010.

Kindergarten a first for Murchison Jessie Johnston Murchison families are looking forward to stepping inside their brand-new kindergarten, which is set to open officially this coming Monday. While the township does have a small playcentre, this is the first official kindergarten for the area, with fully qualified and trained staff providing an educational service. “There were definitely families that requested to have the kinder-

garten here in Murchison and I think, as our population and family dynamics change, people are moving out into the country and wanting a country life, and therefore they want an education service so their children have really good foundations for transition to school,” says Murchison Kindergarten teacher, Angela Fitzpatrick. “And not only that, Murchison at the moment has become such a busy little place, its providing the opportunity for parents to get back into the work force.”

While there are still some boxes to tick before the centre can get up and running, last Saturday the kindergarten held an open day for families wanting to get a feel for the place, and to thank all the people that have put their hard work into helping it get off the ground. Murchison Kindergarten is located on Hampden St and has space for around 20 children, aged three to five years. Also working alongside Angela will be teacher Becky Ozanne.

WIN Michelle Westrupp, left, and Craig Hamilton, right, present Georgie Ferris with a cheque for $3000 at the Richmond Mike Pero office last Wednesday. A portion of every real estate sale is put into the Mike Pero foundation, Craig and the team using money from their local fund to help Georgie reach $20,000, the amount needed to pay for treatment for her digestive tract paralysis condition. The Richmond branch also gave Georgie $800 in November last year, so she could make the trip to Auckland to see a specialist. Georgie’s fundraising mission remains ongoing though as money is also needed for the flights to Melbourne to receive the treatment, accommodation and general living costs. A clairvoyant evening, featuring Diana Whittaker, will be held on March 15 at the Suburban Club, where Georgie will also share her story. The night starts at 7pm with tickets available at the door, or by emailing dianawhittaker@ hotmail.co.nz. All proceeds go directly towards Georgie’s expenses. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

“Give and take, be a good listener and be understanding.” That’s the secret to a longlasting marriage, according to Richmond couple Roy and Mien (Mies) Clark, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last month. The couple, Mies now aged 88 years and Roy, 82, met for the first time in July 1956 in Christchurch. Mies Van den Dorpe, a solo mother and fully qualified architect was unable to get work at the time, so she took in boarders to help pay the bills. One of these boarders just happened to be Roy Clark. In October 1956 the roof of Mies’s house needed painting and Roy was only too happy to help. Mies said to Roy: “Marry me or I will push you off ”. Giving that there was a 60 foot drop and a cactus garden below, it was no wonder Roy said yes. They were married on February 22, 1957 in the Presbyterian Church on the corner of Macmillan Ave and Dyers Pass Rd in Cashmere, Christchurch. Mies was 28 and Roy was 22. In the years between then and now, both Mies and Roy have been very busy. In 1959 they had a son, Michael, a little brother to Vincent and in 1964 they were blessed with a daughter, Esther. They moved from Christchurch in 1986 to a life style block in Rangiora, where they stayed until 2001 when they shifted north to Brightwater.

GODZone race an adventure like no other Simon Bloomberg After five days of trekking, mountainbiking, kayaking and rafting around Queenstown’s backcountry with just eight hours sleep, it finally happened. Of course, I’d heard countless stories about it and knew it would probably happen to me as well but it still came as surprise when the creepy Lord of the Rings character Gollum walked onto the small stony beach on the shores of Lake Wakatipu where I was sitting late at night on the final stage of the GODZone Adventure Race. I told myself it was nothing to worry about and that Gollum was only what adventure racers affectionately call a sleep monster, a kind of hallucination brought on by extreme exhaustion and sleep deprivation. And I was right because when I rubbed my eyes and looked again the Smeagol was gone and there was only my team-mate Mike Buschl on the beach getting his sleeping bag out of his pack. A few minutes later I started confusing another team-mate, Jane Orbell, with one of my wife’s friends. I called Jane ‘Biddy’ at least five or six times before I realised and apologised although I needn’t have bothered because Jane was so out of it as well she hadn’t even noticed. But I didn’t care if I was losing my marbles because I knew we only had four hours of kayaking 011649 Summer Harvest Fair Poster A4_v3.pdf

Swordfox paddling to Glenorchy on Lake Wakatipu during last week’s GODZone Adventure Race. Photo: Alexandre Socci. to go before we crossed the finish line in Queenstown. It would be such a relief after 410 brutal kilometres of racing that had already destroyed my feet, legs and arms and was now assailing my mind. But for all the fatigue and suffering we had endured, we all agreed it was worth it. GODZone had been an adventure like no other, with more than 10,000 metres of vertical climbing being rewarded with some of the most amazing views I have ever seen. At the top of the list was the sweeping panorama of Lake Wakatipu on the second trek. We could see from Glenorchy, where we would kayak to on the next stage, to Kingston where we would end up two days later before kayaking to the finish in Queenstown. On the same trekking stage, Lake

Isobel was so pretty and inviting that all I wanted to do was take off my smelly clothes (we are talking serious odours here) and plunge into her crystal clear waters and then lie down on the tussocks and sunbathe. Instead, I had to settle for a quick splash of water on my face before hurrying after my team-mates. The white water rafting down the Shotover River and 100m abseil off the Skippers Canyon Bridge were adrenalin-charged blasts and the big mountainbike stage around the Dart River and the western edge of Lake Wakatipu, past the tourist walking Meccas of the Routeburn and Greenstone trails and over the 1300m Afton Saddle before racing down the Lochy River was amazing. But the scenery was just a small part of the enjoyment. I loved

battling through the epic challenges GODZone presented and also thoroughly enjoyed my team-mates’ company. Although Jane, Mike and Nigel Kelly were all focused on racing hard, they were great fun. We laughed long and hard at some good, and not so good, jokes and they were always quick to help out a teammate when things got tough. The only really bad and scary moment we had was on the summit of Mt Creighton when I had to inform Mike and Nigel that they were not Sir Ed Hillary and Tenzing Norgay and needed to come back up here right #*@! now. Fortunately, they listened and retreated from their precarious positions and set about finding a safer route off the mountain. It was also fun interacting with some of the other teams. Al-

though it was a race, most teams recognised that they were battling against the course and terrain, not the other competitors. They were always happy to shoot the breeze as we trekked, biked and paddled side-by-side. And what amazed me was how many times we bumped into the same teams. It was even more incredible that many of those teams were from Nelson. We spent a lot of time with Tineli-Rollo’s Sakkie Meyer, Gerard Malcolm, Gilbert Robertson and Emma McCosh, including a yeehah bum-slide down a steep tussocky descent into the Shotover River early on day two. Team Motueka were also good company. The Nelson thletes did pretty well too with Yealands Family Wines’ Dan Busch finishing second. Brent Edwards, Ash Whitehead, Stu Lynch and Georgia Whitla of Swordfox were third. TineliRollo’s Outdoors was 11th followed by Greenhorns in 12th. Our team Stihl was 18th while Marina Buonocore, Tim Bygate, Glenn Lilley and Brendon Crequer of Team Waypoints were 36th. Team Virbac Animal Health’s Brendan Hickman and Adam Stayner finished first in the shorter Pursuit race while Team Silky’s Vicky Shelling, Cal Irvine, Stephen Busby and Paul Dukes finished third. Well done to all those teams for completing an adventure like no other.

Power donation for warmer homes Local power company Network Tasman have jumped on board with the Warmer Healthier Homes project, donating $20,000 to help the community insulate and heat their homes. The Warmer Healthier Homes project assists homeowners in improving insulation and heating by retrofitting insulation in homes. So far, the project has insulated 482 homes in its first two years, with 85 per

cent referred to the scheme by GPs and clinicians. Bill Dahlberg, chair of the Warmer Healthier Homes steering committee, says he is delighted with the donation that was pledged in January. “From their $20,000 funding, they’re getting an input into 30 homes throughout the region.” Network Tasman trustee Ian Barker says he is pleased to have been involved in authorising the

The life work of three generations of Florentine artisans, Da Vinci’s Robots and Machines is an interactive exhibition from the Museum of Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, Italy. All of the exhibits are handcrafted by the Artisans of Florence using the same materials and techniques used in the 15th century. The exhibit brings to life 80 handcrafted machines including armoured tanks, a mechanical lion, robotic drummer, flying machines and a bicycle. A replica of Da Vinci’s enigmatic painting Mona Lisa will also be on display. Renowned primarily as a painter Da Vinci is revered for his technological ingenuity. His areas of interest included invention, painting, architecture, engineering, mathematics, botany, astronomy, geology, anatomy, history, cartography, sculpting, science, music and literature. Today, Leonardo is widely considered one of the most diversely talented individuals ever to have lived. ‘Da Vinci – Robots and Machines’ will run from April 15 to August 13. The window display will be unveiled on Tuesday March 7 at 3pm.

Warmer Healthier Homes are on track to retrofit 700 insulated homes by the end of year, resulting in over 2000 warmer people.

Fatal crash on Coastal Highway: I live 500 metres from there. I have seen the stupidity of drivers daily as I drive this section of road. Not enough travelling distances, to much speed, windy road and then add camper vans and tourists - perfect storm. Sad. Mike Sonnenberg. This makes me bloody wild!!! It's not only tourists who are dangerous on NZ roads and that needs to be remembered. Hopefully the justice system serves the right punishment, (doubt it will), for all the families who have been changed forever. Catharine Beveridge.

Daryn Cunningham ready for top football at 51: You're a bloody legend, Cunny! Brett Yates.

I drive a lot on our roads for work. To Blenheim once a week. The tourists are an absolute nightmare - can't even stay in their lane half the time - constantly crossing the centre line. The roads and speed limits generally also need urgently addressing. I think we are so desensitized to road deaths - people almost "accept" it. Deepest sympathy to the families. Rachelle Davis.

Top player and great to have in your team. Cunny always covered his share of the pitch, and more. Cunny up and down the flanks turned poor passes into good passes. Liked the odd 50/50 and scored some great goals. Always had fun playing with Cunny. Lindsay Scott.

Sad for everyone involved, and their families. Shirley Barrow.

What a great article and fantastic to see you are still competing at a high level. Show the youngsters how it should be done. Have a great season and hope you stay free from injury. Grant Newton.

I once pulled over to the side of the road so my husband could take a photo of something, then pulled out again without looking. I got lucky that day and there was no one behind me but it gave me a fright and I'll never forget it. My point is, it only takes one second of inattention to cause a tragedy whether you're male, female, old, young or from another country. Jess Champagne.

Show some baby love with baking: That’s so cool, I would’ve loved some baking when I first had my girl. I love baking but don’t have much time to do it anymore. Nice work ladies. Gem Bennetts.

Something has to be done about non-New Zealand drivers on our roads. There is nothing in place that teaches them the road rules . I'm disgusted that NZ government will not address this very hugely, disgusting problem. Or do you want more deaths on your roads, Mr Prime Minister? Get it together, man. If tourism brings such money, where does it go? I so distrust you as my head of fortune. Deborah Coleman.

Beautiful! The best kind of help (and treat) with a new babe. Jen Comer. Well done ladies. :) Such a lovely gesture. Grace Clark. To have your say on any local issue or any article featured in this newspaper, simply email us at editorial@waimea weekly.co.nz.

Jessie Johnston Every three years people get the chance to have a sneak peek at the inner workings of Port Nelson, and last Sunday there were plenty keen to take staff up on the offer. “Port Nelson is such a big part of the community, everybody drives past it on a daily basis, it’s also half-owned by the council so everybody’s rates go towards it, so the open day is really to give people an inside look at the port and an inside knowledge on what’s happening,” says event coordinator Jennie Harrison. Those there on the day were able to look inside the port’s brandnew 13,000m2 logistics facility, view footage of the port’s working areas and activities, see the brand-new Tōia tugboat and get hands-on with a heavy equipment display. Guided bus tours were also available, as well as displays put on by St John Cadets and Ministry of Inspiration. Big Brothers, Big Sisters was also there, as they are one of the community groups supported by Port Nelson. “We’ve had very good interest, I’d say well over 2000 people have come through today and everybody has left very happy, having learnt new things about the port,” says Jennie.

Waimea Intermediate swimmers getting faster Simon Bloomberg The number of talented swimmers at Waimea Intermediate continues to increase, reflecting the quality of the coaching programmes now available at pools around Tasman. Waimea Intermediate held its annual swimming sports at the school pool last Wednesday when almost 600 students took to the water. Kimberley Fox, Samantha Wilson, Jonty Bond, Samantha Harman, Nick Reddecliffe and Corby Holland dominated the finals and will now head the Waimea team to compete in the Nelson Intermediate School’s champs at Nayland Pool on Friday. Although there were no superstar performances at the school champs, teacher Jon Linyard says the overall standard of racing was very high. Jon says the quality of swimmers at the school has been improving for a number of years and that’s a direct reflection of the quality

We have had Jos Pattison doing great work for so many years and now we also have Andy (Adair) at the Richmond Aquatic Centre and Glen

(Findlay) and many others.” Kimberley won the year 7 girls breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle while Samantha Wilson won the year 7 girls butterfly. Jonty won the year 7 boys breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle with Max winning the backstroke. Samantha Harman made a clean-sweep of the year 8 girls finals while Nick won the year 8 boys breaststroke and was first-equal with Corbyn in the freestyle. Corbyn won the backstroke and butterfly.

Roadworks, but we’re still

Queen Street Upgrade building a vibrant and resilient richmond

The Queen St redevelopment project continues to be a hot topic as people adjust to the construction underway at the bottom of the street. There’s no doubt it’s a major piece of work and there is no quick or easy way to do it, which is why businesses, commuters and shoppers need to remember some key points to ensure things go as smooth as possible. Construction is currently underway between Gladstone Rd and Three Rooms, which means this portion of the street is closed to traffic, however, parking close by and walking to the shops in the lower section of Queen St is still possible, and Mcindoe Pl remains open under the direction of traffic management staff. All shops affected by stage one of the upgrade are also still up and running and open for business, with only a small few adopting new operation hours. The rest of Queen St remains available for parking, as well as Sundial Square, Richmond Mall

People are also encouraged to use the ring road, encompassing Oxford St, Gladstone Rd, McGlashen Ave, Talbot St and Salisbury Rd, to access businesses along Queen St and avoid congestion. When it comes to parking for business owners and employees, Richmond Unlimited encourages people to use the free parking in the Richmond Showgrounds. This is clearly sign-posted and just 500m from the CBD. For the remainder of stage one, and throughout the rest of the upgrade, which is expected to be completed in April next year, people need to keep supporting the local business along Richmond’s main street. Throughout the entire project, day-time access to all shops will be maintained.

The Lantern

Recreating Community “We need to stop critising our culture and start recreating it,” was a comment I read recently. But how? I wondered. At the beginning of February the Salvation Army released their annual state of the nation report which takes a look at many national social issues. There was nothing overly new in the report as we’re all aware the poor seem to be getting poorer, or is it just more obvious now? I also feel it is ironic in this era of improved technology, people in our community are more isolated than any previous generation. I am sure we all know someone who is lonely and doesn’t have family around for whatever reason. The W.A.Y. (Te Ara), a community driven centre, is one attempt to recreate a community culture, to help make better use of our financial resources, and to address loneliness and isolation. The initials stand for Waimea Adult and Youth. It is to be based in the old Sunday School room at the back of St David’s Presbyterian church, 11 Florence Street in Richmond.

Initially it will be open from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Each day there will be a 90 minute workshop from 10:30 am until 12:00 pm. Anyone can come along to learn some new skills or help others learn new skills. The rest of the time is free to have a coffee or tea, relax with others and create the community we all desire. The workshops will be about different subjects. Mondays will cover food budgeting, food planning, food preparation and living on a tight budget. Wednesdays will cover financial budgeting, preparing a job C.V. and parenting skills. Fridays will be gardening and D.I.Y skills. As part of the Friday workshops, a garden is being prepared where you can grow your own vegetables or learn how to grow vegetables for your own garden. To find out when the first workshops for The W.A.Y. (Te Ara) will begin, or if you would like to assist in some way, please contact Dave Harris on 021 106 6967 or theway7020@gmail.com. — Dave Harris - The W.A.Y. Coordinator

Christians mark day together Last Wednesday night Christians from different Richmond churches, including parishioners from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, gathered together to mark Ash Wednesday at Church on the Hill. Ash Wednesday is the start of Lent in the church calendar. Lent is a 46 day period of reflection leading up to Easter Sunday. As part of the Ash Wednesday evening service, ashes in the shape of a cross were marked on the attendees’ foreheads. Ashes have a long history in both Jewish and Christian tradition as a way of symbolising repentance and reconciliation. Susan Gill, vicar of Church on the Hill said; “It was a joy to worship with Roman Catholics and Anglicans and others at our Ash Wednesday service. Worshipping together was an amazing expression of our God’s mercy and Christian friendship overflowing from that.

Bagpipes - you either love them or you hate them, I’ve never met a single person out there who sits on the fence when it comes to these divisive instruments. As a Scot, my inner patriot stirs every time I hear a piper, but after my latest Give it a Go Girl I’m pretty sure I’ve destroyed the iconic instrument’s reputation. The Celtic Pipe Band Nelson have been together for 10 years and this weekend are hosting the 2017 New Zealand and South Pacific Pipe Band Championships at Trafalgar Park. So I popped along to give it a go and see the masters at work, ahead of their national competition. Pipe bands are made up of four instruments, the classic bagpipe, snare drum, tenor drum and bass drum, and in my complete naivety I thought I would be able to play any of them to a certain degree. As soon as I walked into the Stoke School Hall where the Celtic Pipe Band Nelson practice each week, I was assigned to Leah McConnon, a 10-year old tenor drummer, and Johan Banks, a 14-year old piper. Why is it that doing Give it a Go Girl I always get shown up by people younger than me? I followed Leah, who was all

to produce different notes on the chanter. Despite being perfectly healthy, my little lungs have the strength of a chain-smoking asthmatic, which meant that while I could blow up the bladder, I couldn’t produce enough pressure to push the air out through the chanter, otherwise known as the melody pipe. Because the air didn’t reach the chanter, all that came out when I finally managed to make some sound were terrible, inconsistent, groaning noises. I could’ve made any bagpipe lover cover their ears and contort their face in disgust, in fact the words ‘that actually hurts’ may have been used by a bystander. Everyone, including myself, was in fits of laughter with each terrible sound that floated out of the pipes. After that, everyone was given earplugs. I really wish I was kidding at this point but, unfortunately, that’s how bad I was, even Johan only gave me a two out of ten for my efforts. I have decided that although I still love bagpipes, for the sake of everyone around, I will never play them again. The pipe band champs at Trafalgar Park are on March 10 and 11. Entry is $10 and children are free.

New Waimea Old Boys senior B coaches Scott McKenzie and Luke Thelin are forging their own path as the next generation of their family to be involved in the club. The duo, who once played senior rugby together, will share the coaching duties of the senior B team this year. Both men have fathers, uncles and brothers who have given many years of service to Waimea Old Boys. Luke’s father Errol was the coach of Waimea College’s 1st XV for decades and had a season coaching Waimea Old Boys’ senior A side, while Scott’s dad John coached the Waimea Old Boys senior team and Nelson Bays in the 1990s. Scott says after winning a senior A championship as a player with Waimea, he was keen to begin his coaching career with the club. He then asked Luke to be his assistant and it didn’t take long for the 28-year-old to sign up.

Scott McKenzie, left and Luke Thelin are the next generation in their family to take on coaching roles in the club. The duo will coach the Waimea Senior B team in 2017. Photo Jacob Page. “Scott asked me to be part of it and since I can’t play anymore this seemed like a good way to stay involved,” Luke says. Luke started the 2016 season trying to play through severe hip pain. “In the space of a month I had MRIs, CT scans, cortisone

injections and I was eventually told I had bad arthritis in my hips,” Luke says. “I was hanging around at trainings last year so this seemed a natural progression for this season.” Scott says the senior B team will work more closely with the senior

A squad this year, meaning players will be able to float between the two as needed. But he says the goal is still to get their hands on silverware. “We are a proud club and we will be in there trying to win the whole thing. The Bs have had a

good run of winning so we have something to live up to with our history.” Both men say they aim to work well together to ensure the senior stocks at the club continue and if they ever need some sage advice they only need to call their dads.

Nelson flavour to Festival of Hockey Jacob Page Nelson’s Tanya Hawley is happy playing hockey on her terms. She is one of a quartet of Tasman players who have been picked to play for teams in the Festival of Hockey next month. The 27-year-old defender says being part of the New Zealand Affiliates team for a tournament which involves other Kiwi teams like New Zealand Universities, New Zealand India and New Zealand Maori, was a huge thrill. "It’s my second time in and I’m looking forward to a week of hockey." The best players from the tournament get picked for a team that will travel to Fiji for matches later in the year. Tanya, whose game is based around good stick control and an uncompromising approach to tackles, says the game has been part of her life for a long time.

Tanya Hawley will represent Nelson at the Festival of Hockey next month and is keen to show her ability to national selectors. Photo: Supplied. “I first started playing when I was five, with my brother when we were in Middlemarch.

“It’s one of those places where the kids played hockey, the mums played netball and the dads played rugby.”

Tanya and her family moved to Nelson when she was 10, where she went down to the hockey turf and met her mentor and current Tasman women’s coach Paul Jones. From there, she has been a regular fixture in representative and age-group teams ever since. She is often seen on the goal line during penalty corners and often acts as the last line of defence when the shot comes in. She says she still has the hunger to play top level hockey and is keen to play overseas if given the opportunity. It is another sign of strength for Nelson Hockey, which has debuted a secondary school competition over the past fortnight. The seven week competition runs on Thursday nights and has eight teams competing, with both boys and girls playing with and against each other in what Nelson Hockey is hoping will be a regular event.

Rowing: Nelson rowers Zoe McBride and Brook Robertson have made the New Zealand Rowing team. Brook has been picked as one of a 10-strong squad in the men’s eight while Zoe will re-form her partnership with Jackie Kiddle in the lightweight women’s double. The duo are part of a 39 strong team that will contest Rowing World Cup events in Poland in June and Switzerland in July. Bowls: Stoke finished runners up in the National InterClub bowls finals in Auckland over the weekend. They lost the decider to Eastbourne with only world champion Shannon McIlroy winning his final match. They had previously beaten Paraturu and Hillsboro to make the decider. United lost in the quarter-finals. Golf: Sean Riordan was the lone Tasman golfer to make the cut at the New Zealand PGA Championship at the Manawatu Golf Club. Sean finished at even par for the tournament, 14 shots behind the winner and in a tie for 39th. Fellow Tasman golfers Ryan Chisnall, David Riordan and Hamish Campbell all missed the cut.

Defending champs deliver in Nelson Defending champions Megan Craig and Chris van der Salm retained their Nelson Squash titles over the weekend, however it was not smooth sailing for either of them. Chris, from Canterbury, came back from losing the first set to Scott Galloway in a gripping five-set final.

Chris even replayed match point after initially winning it on a rally. Both men are ranked in the top 12 squash players in New Zealand but Chris proved too strong during the crucial points. Meanwhile, Megan, who is ranked 75th in the world, downed the up-and-coming

Some you love and some not so much, but every now and then you get a bag with a little of every lolly you want. This weekend’s meeting at the Mile-

speedway popular attraction in Nelson and two nights of this bone and carcrunching action are not to be missed. The format is that all teams race each other over the first night and early on night two, then the teams that are first and second after the qualifying races battle it out in the final and race for the $3000 prize money for first place. The teams that finish in third and fourth will also be giving it their best shot to try and grab the final spot on the podium. All going well, three cars from each team will all race together in one race called the Dash for Cash near the end of the night where $1000 will be handed to the team that gets their car across the line in first place. It will be interesting to see how this one pans out. The other big show over the two nights is the Vertex Super Cup where the top Super Saloon drivers in the South Island converge on the Moutere clay to contest this season-long series. To top it off, we here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway get to host the penultimate and final rounds over the two nights so we get to see who takes out the championship which

is an added bonus. These fire-breathing big V8 American styled Super Saloons have to be seen to be believed as they race door to door around our tight track which can often end in tears for some. But without the risk, there is no reward to get the results needed to be at the pointy end on pay day. The massive amount of time, effort and, of course, the big budgets make this class one of the big crowd-pleasers at each track they go to. With Super Saloon numbers declining here in Nelson we don’t get to see these cars here as often as we like but it’s always great to see them back here putting on the blue ribbon shows we expect from them. The third big promotion is the Ray White Richmond-Nelson Youth Ministock Mania. Two nights where we get to see the young talent of New Zealand speedway show us just how bright the future of our sport is, and let me tell you it’s looking brighter than ever. These kids, aged between 12 and 16, get to show us just how much their training and practice in the Ministock class has paid off as they are given the chance to race against some of the best racers their age in

speedway their class. This season the promotions team have changed the format in the hope that all the drivers get to challenge not only themselves but the others around them to take the win in their respective age groups. The old three-heat cumulative point’s deal has gone in favour of a two-race heats and a feature race format on each of the two nights. The feature race is expected to be around the 20lap mark at both shows so we should see the cream rise to the top in each of the two feature races. Now, I will guarantee that most of these kids have never raced that many laps in a single race before so it will be a learning curve for some before they move into the bigger adult classes and be a part of the “Big

Show”. If you can’t make it to either of these two shows, then fear not as the Nelson Speedway in association with The Pits Media are live streaming both nights of this huge show. Just go to our website at http://www.nel sonspeedway.co.nz/event/stockcarteams-brawl-vertex-super-cup/ and click on the link to register online and sit back in the comfort of your living room to take in the action. James Lowe signs deal with Leinster Waimea Old Boys and Chiefs winger James Lowe will start a three year contract with Irish club Leinster at the end of this year’s Mitre 10 Cup campaign. The Tasman Makos product may be in career-best form after scoring three tries in the opening two rounds of Super Rugby but the 24-year-old believes the time is right. “This decision has not been an easy one.
