Anger at Murchison flooding Murchison residents are “angry, frustrated and pissed off ” with Tasman District Council over a decision on how it will fix a flooding creek. The Ned’s Creek runs along Hampden St where nine homes sit and has been prone to flooding for decades. In 2012, two major floods just weeks apart destroyed belongings as garages and sheds were washed out. This winter has been only slightly better. Resident Avallon James says he’s lived on the street for 37 years and the creek performed at its best when it was regularly being cleared out by a digger. But several years ago it was planted with natives and has not been dug out, which he believes has caused the recent flooding. “I am frustrated with the council, they keep saying they’re going to be doing something and make an ap-

pearance and do a little bit, but it doesn’t do what you want it to do. There’s a bit of showboating there, I think.” Another resident, Joe Hockey, says he had a fridge, freezer and a car all destroyed in 2012 and the reoccurring flooding has left him frustrated. “The creek needs to be cleaned out. It needs to be widened and deepened. It has a lot of silt in it and a lot of the plantings that were put in have overgrown and are clogging it up,” he says. “There are some bigger issues upstream a wee bit, but in a nutshell, if it’s cleaned out it may not fix the problem 100 per cent but will certainly make a big difference.” Joe says they’ve been told by the council that they have no

Brightwater’s Rachel Foster’s 4.30am starts paid off big time on Saturday as the mother of two won her bodybuilding section at the Top of the South Classic at the Theatre Royal. For 35-year-old Rachel it was a return to the sport after a 13 year absence that included the birth of her two children. She competed in the Over-35 Figure Class and says the 4.30am starts for her one hour of cardio were her favourite time of the day. “It was actually easy. There are no kids, no husband, no work, it’s just a case of putting the hard work in,” she told the Weekly after stepping off stage on Saturday. Having worked in a gym when she was 16, Rachel says she always had an interest in bodybuilding and enjoyed the competitive side of it. “Today was about getting back out there and giving it a go,” she says. “I joined the gym again last year and really enjoyed the training and thought this would be something to aim for.” There’s the standard diet of chicken breasts, fish and multiple cups of vegetables before competition, but now it's over Rachel says she's looking forward to a sit-down and a wine or two. Overall, NABBA men’s and women’s winners were Nick Barbour and Amy George respectively, while WFF winners were Mike Smith and Rachel.

“I noticed they’re building it so they can extend it, which is a plus. Nelson definitely needs an upgrade, during school holidays it’s a disaster area.”

“I think it’s really great and good for Nelson, just what it needs.”

“It looks good, the place needs a good revamp. The amount of traffic that comes in and out of Nelson, we need something better and cheaper fares too.”

budget to fix the problem until 2019. “What they’re saying is that they have absolutely no money but they are proposing, in about 2019, to rechannel it, spending hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars, which is probably unnecessary. We’ve got some local contractors who have looked at it and said $5000-$10,000 with a digger would clean the creek out and that would be the biggest part of the problem solved – it isn’t rocket science.” He says that idea has been shot down by the council. “When we suggest that cleaning the creek out would help solve the problem they laugh, they think it’s a joke. They think that it can’t possibly help. They’re trying to say it’s not the problem, but it’s quite obvious that it is because

Ned’s Creek on Hampden St in Murchison that has been flooding local residents. Photo: Steve Page. it’s been since it was planted out by DoC that the creek has become choked up, and it can’t get a decent flow through it now and as a result it’s filled up with silt. “Basically, they tell us that we don’t know what we’re talking about and people are absolutely pissed off and frustrated. People are angry. It’s not a huge amount of money to stop it from happening.” A Tasman District Council

spokesperson says that they are aware of the flooding and have been looking into ways to reduce the flood risk. Staff were in Murchison to speak with residents on Monday. “The last event saw surface flooding occurring around the recreation centre, through the reserve and flowing through to Hampden St into private property. This indicates that the new culvert crossings in the reserve are too small and

causing the initial flooding out of the creek. Furthermore, there is a low section along the creek, on the true right bank upstream of the reserve, which could benefit from bunding.” TDC says there is currently $200,000 in the budget to fix issues with the creek in 2019/2020, with another $540,000 in 2025/26. But staff plan to seek the council’s approval for some funding through the 2017/2018 plan for culvert upgrades, widening the channel through the reserve and a berm to help reduce the risk of flooding. Joe says it can’t come soon enough. “I’ve got my shed set up so that it’s safe [from floods] and I usually go and help the neighbours with sandbagging and stuff. But we still have kids’ bikes, kids’ toys, cars and our firewood that is often damaged by these floods.”

Support to ‘save Salisbury’

Jessie Johnston

In a show of solidarity for Salisbury School, over 150 people came together on Sunday to demonstrate the wide community support that exists for the facility in the face of its closure. For the second time in four years, Education Minister Hekia Parata is consulting on closing the school due to its small roll of students, school supporters saying roll numbers are down because the ministry has been “managing down” its enrolments after the implementation of the Intensive Wraparound Service. Salisbury School board of trustees chairperson, John Kane, says the main focus of the gathering on Sunday was to show a united community against the closure of the school, as well as garner further support for the facility in its battle. “I’m incredibly grateful to the various politicians who have come out and for the support that they’re showing the school. I think this has struck a chord and people realise there is something pretty precious about Salisbury and it is quite wrong to be closing it,” says John. Held in Salisbury’s recreation room, the gathering featured a number of speakers including John Kane, Tasman District Mayor, Richard Kempthorne,

Airport design gets support Man killed on boat was a local from travellers and locals Andrew Board

Andrew Board

The new-look terminal for Nelson Airport has been given the thumbs up from airline travellers and locals. Last Wednesday Nelson Airport revealed plans for the long-awaited $32million terminal upgrade. Work will begin later this year and is expected to take two years to complete. Nelson Airport chief executive Rob Evans says the project will greatly enhance the experience for travellers with more space for seating, airline lounges, toilets, new retail spaces and increased car parking. And it seems travellers agree. Waimea Weekly took the concept design to the airport to ask those flying in and out of the airport what they think of the plans. All were supportive, with Rob Brouwer, who regularly comes to Nelson from Raglan for work, especially pleased to see the addition of a luggage conveyor belt. “I think it looks good, Nelson has got to be one of the sunniest places in New Zealand and I love coming here for work,” he says. Neville Clark, security worker at Nelson Airport, says the new airport is going to be “absolutely brilliant”. “This one is past its use-by date – it will definitely be an asset for years

The man was who died in a “very violent attack” on a boat moored in Nelson Haven has been identified as a local man. Police were alerted to a body found on a boat opposite the Neale Park playing fields on Thursday morning. A team of Nelson detectives, assisted by forensic and fingerprint experts from Christchurch, have been investigating the scene since. On Saturday afternoon a post mortem was completed in Christchurch, after which police identified the dead man as John Murray “Muzza” Morton. Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnston said the post mortem also confirmed the death was a homicide. “The number and nature of Mr Morton’s injuries suggest

An artists’ impression of the new airport terminal. and years to come. I just hope I’m still working here to enjoy it.” The feedback was equally glowing on the nelsonlive.co.nz Facebook page, after news of the new terminal was first reported there last Wednesday. “Well overdue! About time to be honest,” wrote Jasmine Bewley, while Kevin J Hodges commented “Simple and effective design… simplicity works well in airport design as people who use the facility will be there for a matter of minutes.” Although the majority were positive about the design, there were some detractors. “I just see a whole bunch of tents,” wrote Scott Lovell. Rob Evans says he’s been thrilled with the feedback so far. “More than happy, quite fantastic

and on a lot of platforms. We got the functionality right, then it was how do we bring a sense of place to the development so that it fits with the region? It’s pretty exciting to be able to do that.” The new airport will be built with locally-sourced timber, have floor to ceiling windows, a spacious open plan style and a unique roof design. The car parking will also get an overhaul with an extra 300 parks added to cater for a total of 900 vehicles, as well as more room for taxis, buses and rental cars. The development with be completed without any ratepayer contributions and Rob says the airport company expects to continue offering annual dividends to its owners, Nelson City and Tasman District councils.

a very violent attack and the investigation team is determined to piece together exactly what happened. Extra resources are being brought in from other police districts and the Nelson team will be joined by further investigators on Monday,” says Craig. Mr Morton was not the owner of the boat that his body was found on. Police say they are keen to hear from anyone who uses the reserve area or may have recently taken photographs of the area of QEII drive opposite the skate park, particularly the boats that are moored there, in order to help police reconstruct the scene and understand recent activity there. Anyone with information that may be relevant to the investigation into Mr Morton’s death is asked to contact Nelson Police on 03 546 3840.

Local mothers and babies join the Big Latch On The Big Latch On is all about supporting, promoting and celebrating the mother and baby bond that’s created through breastfeeding. A world wide event, the Big Latch On started last Friday at 10:30am and finished on Saturday, with a number of locations around the Nelson Tasman region welcoming mothers and their babies to gather together, including Ma’s Place in Richmond. “We wanted to celebrate breastfeeding,” says owner Carol Mar-

shall. “Ma’s Place is about our children and parents and this is such a key part of our experience as a mother. I’m a midwife as well so it’s something that I’m very passionate about.” “Breastfeeding is important for bonding, it’s really nice to collectively celebrate it as mums and it’s a good way to connect as well because we’ve all got that shared experience.” Six breastfeeding mothers attended the event at Ma’s Place on Friday morning.

Chelsea’s stunning bridal style, Wednesday, August 3: After making the top five in the New Zealand Weddings Magazine Joico Bridal Stylist of the Year competition, Clear Cuts hair stylist Chelsea Glover has taken out the title. The competition featured hair stylists from around the country but it was Chelsea’s design, modelled by her older sister Alice, that received the most votes. As the Joico Bridal Stylist of the year, Chelsea will join the Joico team at two New Zealand Weddings Magazine Collection shows at New Zealand Fashion Week, which runs from August 22 – 28, this year. She will also have a full page feature in the Summer issue of New Zealand Weddings, as well as feature on newzealandweddings.co.nz. Family violence a ‘significant problem’, Wednesday, July 20: After taking to the streets to raise money during Women’s Refuge Appeal week, Nelson Women’s Refuge was happy to announce that a total of $5863.60 was raised through donations, over $700 more than last year. Considering how small the organisation is, manager Katie O’Donnell was pleased with the result and said everyone had been incredibly generous both in Nelson and Richmond, including the Richmond Mall who accommodated their collection stand. Coming up, Nelson Women’s Refuge has a fundraising quiz night at Speights Ale House and a movie night showing the new Bridget Jones movie. For more information check out their Facebook page.

.CO.NZ in the area on the night of Wednesday, July 13. Drivers caught on cellphones: Two dozen Nelson drivers have been caught using their cellphones in a two hour period, say police. The sting was part of a national campaign aimed at curbing cellphone use by drivers. During one two hour period in the last week police detected 23 people using their cellsphones while driving. Support for Southern Link: Supporters of the Southern Link had a win with the latest public feedback results from New Zealand Transport Agency showing support for the new road. The results of the NZTA’s second stage of their five stage investigation into the road showed that more than 60 per cent of the 2010 submitters supported construction of the road, known informally as the Southern Link. Twenty-four per cent of people said they wanted to make the most of the existing network and only 10.5 per cent wanted to widen current routes. A separate telephone survey of 500 people – 400 in Nelson and 100 in Tasman – again pointed towards building the Southern Link, with 46 per cent favouring that approach. Another 34 per cent supported widening the existing routes and just 17 per cent said to make the most of the existing network.

Special Ed students gather for reunion Jessie Johnston It was in 1989 that Waimea College’s Special Education Department opened its doors, so last Wednesday past and present students and teachers came back to celebrate its 27th year. “The last reunion we had was 10 years after the department had started and we just thought now is the time to hold another one,” says special education head of department, Sarah Kennedy. “It’s inspiring to hear the stories of all the students who’ve left and the lives they’ve made for themselves and [know we’ve played a] part in that.” The reunion, which was held in the school hall, began with stories from two of the departments ex pupils, Chris Tilley and Maria Dixon, who explained what their lives are like now and their memories of life in the department. Both Chris and Maria have gone on to represent the country in the Special Olympics in Shanghai and England, Chris in power lifting and Maria in equestrian. Past student Ben Jackson created a special piece of art work that adorned the mugs that were given as gifts to those who attended the event. Since leaving Waimea College and the Special Education Department, Ben continues his business OMG, which was his catchphrase at school, creating printed tea towels, bags and t-shirts that are sold at the Nelson Market. Alice Robb is in her last year at Waimea College and says there’s a lot she will miss about the special education department when she leaves. “[I’ll definitely miss] all my friends, all the teachers who have supported me and basketball with Mr Book, he’s the expert, he taught me everything, I’ve had a really great experience so far and enjoyed my time here.” Foundation student Steven Laing was present on the day too, enjoying the chance to catch up with teachers and friends he hasn’t seen for over 20 years. “When they started this class we didn’t know whether it was going to work, it was just like be-

ing a guinea pig,” says Steven’s father, Graham. “[At the time] other students in the school would be assigned to one particular person [from the department] to keep an eye on them during lunch time and breaks, and that was a really great interaction.” Around 60 people attended the reunion with Past and present Waimea College Special Education students, Ben Jackson, past pupils taken on a tour of the school to see Alice Robb and Steven Laing, during the department’s 27 year reunion last Wednesday in the Waimea College school hall. Competition winner gets bedroom makeover Jessie Johnston Colourplus Richmond made one little girls dream come true after awarding Isabelle Jordan with a mini bedroom makeover last Wednesday. The competition was run during the last school holidays and attracted 29 entries from local school children who had to create either a lightsaber or a fairy house. “We just came up with the idea as a way of engaging people during the holidays,” says Colourplus Richmond’s Jo Hender. “It was something for the kids to do and something to take a bit of pressure off the parents.” Colourplus supplied a packet of goodies to get the decorating underway before the kids creations were uploaded to Facebook, the winning entry decided by the most likes and shares. Isabelle was the only girl to create a lightsaber and with some great Facebook promotion, thanks to her mum Holly, it was her entry that

took out first place. “We were in the Richmond Mall and walked past the stand and I had all five children with me, so we filled out all the forms, we thought it was a good thing to do on a rainy day during the holidays,” says Holly. “Isabelle was absolutely stoked [when she found out she’d won], she’s the middle child of five so it’s quite nice that she has something special happen to her.” As well as a $30 Richmond Mall voucher presented by mall manager Belinda de Clercq, Isabelle also received a cake from Chocolate Velvet to the value of $70, up to three rolls of wall paper for a miniature bedroom makeover and a number of accessories to complete the look including a clock, a lamp, duvet cover, blanket, chalkboard and a bean bag. After the success of their first school holiday competition, Jo says Colourplus is keen to run another one, but are yet to decide what the challenge will be.

Coasters reunite in Nelson Andrew Board In 1956 at Hokitika District High School, a class of 17 West Coast boys learnt how to use their hands to prepare them for their lives ahead – 60 years on they met in Nelson to discuss how it turned out for them. Of the 17 boys, nine are still alive and seven of them live in Nelson. Another former Hokitika student travelled up for the reunion from Christchurch on Saturday. The reunion was organised to coincide with the annual Ex-West Coasters get together, which was held at the Suburban Club on Sunday. Gary Howard says he organised the school reunion because it was remarkable that half of the class from 60 years ago live in Nelson. He says there were four classes at Hokitika High School then, one for academic boys, one for academic girls, one for cooking and sewing for girls and one for woodwork and metalwork for boys. His class made up the latter. “We all went on to learn a trade, I was an electrician and had the biggest electrical firm on the West Coast until the power board bought us out. Then I moved to Nelson in 1972.” Other members of the class went on to become mechanics, police officers and businessmen. He says so many West Coasters move to Nelson for several main reasons: “The climate, schools, hospitals, it’s bigger but not too big and you’re still close to the coast.” The next day, the eight men and their partners then headed to the Ex-West Coast get-together at the Nelson Suburban Club, where the talk was dominated by whitebait, rain and old friends. Organiser Murray Wieblitz says it was another great turn out with around 150 people registering. Like Gary, Murray believes there are so many Coasters who now live in Nelson because of the weather. “I shifted here in 1970. I was a dairy farmer and had just had one hell of a wet spring. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.” He says, although a lot of Coasters now call Nelson home, they still have a connection with the coast. “I always say when we drive down there that we’re heading home, when we drive back we’re coming home.”

The school photo from 1956. The circled students who were reunited on Saturday are, from back left; Gary Howard, Jim Wright, John Wieblitz. Front row from left is Martin Cuff, Ian McLeod and John Baty. Photo supplied by Gary Howard.

Your Voice GPs disappointed in parents who fail to immunise children: After seeing affects of whooping cough in a small baby whose mother choose for the child not to be immunised, and watching the affects the mother went through, I’d say why not vaccinate your children? The guilt she had to carry, even the mother said ‘I should have just done it’! Annie Whall. Why have people lost faith in their bodies immune systems? Daniel Murphy.

I would never not vaccinate my kids. There are so many out there without immune systems, why would you put them at risk too? It’s not always about you, sometimes other children are just as important. Aleicia Humphries. A few weeks ago my niece (7 months pregnant) took her wee boy in to get his vaccine. They noted he was a bit snuffly so they re-booked for the following week. The wee boy had full -blown measles before he could get his pre-booked vaccine. Luckily, both mother and son came through this ok, but it was a scary time for them (and worrying for us). Yes, vaccination is needed. Susan Ruby Ruddell.

Elections just around the corner: Local body elections just weeks away and it seems we ratepayers and residents of TDC are being treated as mushrooms, till then and the elections are over, no more bull dust or kept in the dark. However, be aware of those pushing the dam. When the majority of us are being told how wonderful it will be, the only thing it will do for ratepayers will be a massive hike in rates. It’s time also to select full time councillors, rather than a full time farmer, someone who was dumped as a councillor, now believes this qualifies him to stand for mayor, his aim being to get the dam which will be of no benefit to 90 per cent of ratepayers. Soldiers plan reunion Simon Bloomberg

The funds left untouched in a bank account for "over 15 years" will be put to their intended use later this year when a group of retired soldiers from the Nelson Marlborough West Coast Regiment have a reunion. The bank account contained leftover funds from the regiment's last reunion "over 15 years ago" and as time passed all the original signatories of the account passed away. However, the account has been reactivated by a group of "old fellas" who are planning to use the funds for a reunion of all the regiment’s soldiers who

were drafted under Compulsory Military Training. “The bank had been sending the monthly statement to the regular force guys here in Nelson and they didn’t know anything about it,” one of the reunion organisers, Pete Nicholas, says. “It had been left in the account with the instructions that it was to be used for another reunion, so that started the ball rolling.” Pete says they expect around 50 people to attend the reunion. He says compulsory military training scheme ran 1950 to 1972 so “there aren’t too many of us left.” “I was an apprentice barber with Ted Wilson when I got

my letter. I had a medical with Dr Oliver and then took the Newmans bus to Blenheim and train to Burnham for 16 weeks of training. “My father was in World War I and my older brother was in World War II, so when I got the letter saying I had been drafted I was thrilled. It was a big thing and we had a marvellous time.” The reunion will be held at the Garrison Club at the Army Headquarters on November 22. Any members of the Nelson Marlborough West Coast regiment who served under CMT are welcome. For more information, contact Paddy Maskill at 1pm1@clear. net.nz or phone 544 8842.

Mother: tough decision not to immunise Brittany Spencer

While GPs are disappointed by last month’s controversial revelation that over 200 Nelson babies are not fully immunised, it is not surprising to some Nelson mothers. One Nelson mother, who spoke to Waimea Weekly on the condition that she remained anonymous for fear of being vilified, decided against vaccinating her child. Her boy is now 13 months old and has not received any vaccinations. “Early in my pregnancy, I didn’t even consider that not vaccinating was an option.” However, she says that changed after talking to other non-vaccinating mothers within the region. “I knew they wouldn’t have made that decision lightly. They’re mainstream people who are highly educated, so I thought it was worth looking into.” For three months before the birth of her son she solidly researched books, reports,

medical journals and articles supporting both sides. “It is really hard to find good research, there’s so many sensationalised articles both pro-vaccine and anti-vaccine. I looked at both sides and getting through all the jargon and data was quite a battle.” She researched the efficacy of vaccines, the trial methods, vaccine risk factors, heard immunity and the risks and treatment options available if her son contracted an illness. “At the end of it, my opposing arguments for vaccinating were longer than my supporting list, so I decided not to do it,” she says. “I went round and round in circles about whether to vaccinate or not and it's an ongoing decision, one I will keep revisiting, but unless the pros strongly outweigh the cons I will maintain the decision that I’ve made, but I’m open to changing it.” After the research, she says she doesn’t think the immunisation schedule works as

well as we’re told it does. “Vaccination doesn’t work for everyone and there are risk factors that can contribute to vaccine injuries, when the chances of contracting those diseases are quite low.” While her family are supportive, she says this is not always the case. “When my boy was really young I was quite open about it. I was almost naive, I didn’t realise there was such a pro-vaccination movement that attacks people who challenge it, but now I see people looking at me sideways and questioning my judgement. “It’s hard for mothers to ask questions because if they talk to the wrong person they get judged harshly for it.” She also says social media is the latest area for attacking non-vaccinators. “People are constantly using social media as a bullying platform, they’ll post articles that ridicule non-vaccinators. There are some out there that liken non-vaccinators to murderers, its absolutely ridiculous…I

just wonder if those people had done the research I’ve done, whether they’d comment so violently on the topic.” Because of the strong reaction non-vaccinators get, she says the subject often just doesn’t get talked about. “People don’t really talk about it and I find that scarier, because instead of being able to be informed and educated you stay in silence, afraid of being judged. There are still a couple of friends I haven’t told.” She says there’s a lot of stigma attached to the decision and non-vaccinators don’t tend to have a good name because some people make that decision uninformed. “It’s a deeply personal decision and it’s one thing to make an informed decision not to vaccinate and its another thing to not do it because you hear a scary story, forget, or because you don’t want to put your child through getting a prick by a needle.” To follow previous articles written about vaccination in Nelson, visit nelsonlive.co.nz.

The perfect place for brides-to-be If you’re a blushing bride to be, then the Nelson Bridal Show is a must when it comes to planning your special day. Organisers Jenny Ohlson, Casey Stevenson and Lisa Booth are relaunching the event which will feature a diverse range of exhibitors within the Rutherford Hotel. Starting at 10am, the first 50 brides through the door will receive a special pamper gift, with more opportunities to win prizes spread throughout

the day, including the chance to take home a pair of diamond earrings thanks to Glen James Jewellers. Entry into the competition can be done between 10am and 1:30pm, just in front of the Glen James Jewellers stand. All you need to do is pick the real diamond from the cubic zirconia. As well as helping brides and grooms connect with local wedding industry experts, the Nelson Bridal Show is also

Just a thought... Pastor David Jensen

Hi everyone, I would like to take this opportunity to say how fantastic the Top of the South Cardiology staff, nurses and surgeons are. I have just had some heart surgery and have been so impressed by all involved. Their slogan is “in good hands” and their skill, care, and bedside manner have shown how apt this is. So, a huge “thank you” to Nick Fisher and his excellent team for their surgery and care! Now, I am quite sure that had there not been intervention I would have been in dire straits and, as I look back at the heart issue I was facing, I freely acknowledge that I was helpless to rectify the problem on my own. You see there was no exercise routine or healthy-eating regime that could undo the blockage that had formed in my arteries. The bottom line was that I needed outside intervention. I was thankful I was in good hands. There was a point on my journey, before the operation, where I thought I was going to die. You see I was experiencing angina and even multiple attempts with the nitroglycerin spray weren’t dissipating it. It’s very sobering facing your own mortality! I am aware that even with the best surgeons and medical intervention money can buy that death is ultimately irresistible! None of us, no matter what we do, can permanently evade death! I think it was Benjamin Franklin who said “there are two certainties in life – death and taxes” how true. In a way, our weakness to do anything about the ultimate reality of death, is a little like my heart condition, in that without some form of “outside intervention” we are in dire straits (only eternally). The good news is that in our helplessness God has provided the “outside intervention” we needed in and through Jesus. I don’t have space to explain the finer details here, but the Bible makes it clear that Jesus, God’s messiah, came to rescue us from the power of death, providing eternal life for all who will place their trust in him. Friends, I must confess that when I thought I was about to die I was overwhelmed by the reality of having to say good bye to those I love, but I was not afraid to die, because I knew that Jesus had triumphed over death. I am in good hands, in God’s hands. All the best.

supporting the community as a not-for-profit event. Lisa, Jenny and Casey are all giving their time freely to organise the event, with all profits from the expo being donated to the Nelson Tasman Rescue Helicopter Trust. Tickets to the show can be purchased online for $10 from www.bridetobe.co.nz, or people can purchase tickets for the same price on the day. The show is on August 21 at the Rutherford Hotel.

Being local, friendly and always there to help are key values for Waimea Vehicle Testing Station, which was taken over by Chris and Ali Webley earlier this year. Chris has been in the automotive industry since he was 16, starting work in a Christchurch garage before heading to Australia on his big OE, gaining experience with tractors and other agricultural machinery. After returning to New Zealand, Chris owned and operated marine and auto shops in Christchurch and Picton and has now been living in Nelson for 11 years. When the opportunity arose to purchase Waimea Vehicle Testing Station, a reliable and well known Richmond business, Chris and Ali were more than keen to take it on. They both love the benefits of being a completely independent business, unlike other testing stations,

which provides their customers with a number of choices when it comes to fixing mechanical issues that may have stopped them achieving a warrant of fitness. Chris and the team can either suggest local garages that they know offer quality workmanship, or the vehicle owner can use their preferred mechanic, either way, the most important thing for Chris is that his customers receive a 100 per cent independent and accurate safety check. Whether it’s your car, boat trailer, caravan, motorbike or light truck, Chris and his team are all qualified mechanics that can have your warrant of fitness check done in no time. Their testing station is unique in Nelson in that it’s the only one to feature two lanes, making a real difference for vehicle owners that want fast and efficient service. Plus, with a $39 WOF option, they’re possible one of the cheapest stations in town. All vehicle owners need to do is leave their car with Chris and the team for two hours while they browse the shops or take a break in a café. The same goes for their $75 oil and filter change, after two hours, your car will be ready and waiting for you to get on with your day, they also do filter changes on diesel vehicles for $99 up to a six cylinder diesel at $129. With a fresh new courtesy lounge now sitting proudly in the testing station, Chris says their main aim is to carry on offering excellent service to Waimea Vehicle Testing Station’s loyal customers and work hard to win over

Based in Wakefield, the Golden Bay Contracting Ltd (Tasman) team is more than ready and willing to support you this season and beyond. After putting in the hard yards and growing a very loyal and strong client base, Golden Bay Contractors Ltd owners, Daryl and Sue Hill, decided it was time to expand the businesses name and offer new clients the chance to experience their quality service and workmanship. Both Jane and Stewart Mitchell have backgrounds in sheep, beef and dairy farming and are currently farming a 32ha block of land near Wa ke f i e l d . Stewart has also been working

With years of experience amongst them and with the support of Sue and Daryl in Golden Bay, Stewart, Jane and Cameron are keen to start meeting the needs of local farmers and are also looking forward to putting their new machinery to work. Although the Tasman division runs independently it is still under the umbrella of Golden Bay Contracting Ltd which

will allow them to relocate machinery in to high demand areas as required. “We’re all working as a team to achieve the best results for all our clients,” says Sue. “We’ve got good systems and structures in place, as well as really good people, so we’ll just continue to do a good job for everybody” says Daryl. “Golden Bay Contracting Ltd has a great reputation for doing quality work and that’s what we intend to replicate for farm owners in the Tasman region.” Stewart, Cameron and Jane will also

During their years in business, the Golden Bay Contracting Ltd team has satisfied clients with quality pasture conservation services. Check out what their clients have to say about their loader wagon service in particular. “We used the loader wagons to cart silage from our run-off six kilometres away. They proved to be very efficient and cost effective. We will absolutely use them again.” Alan and Shelley Palmer “I started using Golden Bay Contracting loader wagons after the 2011 floods. I couldn’t get larger machines over the Wainui Bridge because the ford was no longer available. I found the medium length cartage times more efficient, cheaper and surprisingly quick compared to the other harvester I previously used. I am happy with the silage and will continue to use Golden Bay Contracting.” Mike Robertson “For the last two years we have used Golden Bay Contracting loader wagons for our silage harvesting. This produced an excellent product and suits our softer ground in Bainham. This has significantly reduced our silage making costs.” Nalder Holdings

Daryl says it is a race full of pacing and luck and, while he had competed in the event plenty of times, it was a new experience winning it. “There will be fast runners who did 12km paired with the slowest walker who will do 4km, so

you want to be middle of the pack to stand a chance. “I found the whole thing a bit hilly, I’m a bit unfit.” Daryl says he enjoys the event because of its point of difference. “It’s really mental, I think Josh and I did 7km each. “It’s a great event because, let’s be honest, running can get a little boring after a while.”

Nelson’s Maadi Cup originals back where it all started Jacob Page Four members of Nelson’s inaugural Maadi Cup hockey team of 1951 returned to the tournament at the Saxton Hockey Turf over the weekend. Ralph Davies, Eric Parker, Kelvin Ching and Frank Black were all part of the Nelson team which won the first ever tournament in “atrocious” conditions on home soil. “It was so cold I couldn’t pick up the ball for the roll out,” Ralph says. “We had long socks at the start of the tournament but they had shrunk to just above our ankles by the end of it.”

The trophy has been competed for annually ever since between Nelson, Marlborough, Buller and West Coast and was gifted as a memorial to men and women killed in world wars. Eric remembers the inaugural team having some quality players in their ranks, but when it comes to genetics he may have won the battle. Eric’s father Godfrey played hockey for Nelson in 1920 and Eric’s four sons have all played Maadi Cup hockey for Nelson over the years. Ralph was just 20 during the first Maadi Cup but went on to captain Nelson in 1958 and 1959, playing matches against Australia, India, Pakistan and New Zealand during the time where hockey was being played on grass at Trafalgar Park. All four men agreed the game was much faster now that it’s played on a synthetic surface. “It’s a free-for-all now,” Ralph says. “The ball is in the air a lot, you can raise your stick more than we ever did. More than 40 former Nelson Maadi Cup players were welcomed to a reunion during the weekend. Meanwhile, on the turf, the Nelson men won back the Maadi Cup with two wins and a draw. The crucial match of the tournament came in the opening

An 11-3 win over Marlborough and a 6-2 triumph over Buller was enough to see them take the trophy from the Coasters on goal differential.

Captain Paul Muncaster says his players benefited from extended minutes in the last two games after a slow start in game one. “I think guys were getting five to seven minutes on the turf at a time and that wasn’t enough, so we changed that to 10 to 15 minutes in the other two games. Paul praised the efforts of Toby Bowden and Jarod Jones through the tournament. Nelson’s senior women’s team found the going tougher at the Pope Shield tournament. Nelson drew with West Coast 4-4 and lost to front runners Marlborough 6-3 before hammering Buller 10-2. The women’s B team beat Marlborough 3-1 and West Coast 7-1 in an unbeaten Gladstone Cup campaign.

NCG and Waimea College draw in see-sawing game Jacob Page

Nelson College for Girls Senior Purple and Waimea senior 2 produced an entertaining yet scrappy 20-20 draw in senior netball at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. Waimea controlled the first and fourth quarters, charging back from a four goal deficit at the final break to share the spoils. Nelson College kept Waimea to five goals combined in the second and third quarter to

gain what should have been a match-winning four goal advantage for the final quarter. Waimea College senior 2 had a 6-3 advantage after the first quarter, despite having less attacking chances than NCG. While the NCG defenders earned plenty of turnovers, the ball was not treasured in the attacking circle and multiple opportunities were lost. NCG earned the first two goals of the second quarter to close the gap. They rode the early momen-

tum to eventually draw level late in the quarter. NCG began to pick up its speed through the court on attack and it paid dividends to have the game locked at 10-10 at the main break. Nelson College wing attack Paige Byers was active on attack and defence, while the Waimea defensive duo of Hannah Moreton and Summer Pritchard were working overtime to stifle NCG attacks. NCG took the lead by scoring the opening goal

of the third quarter after three minutes of play. Of the six goals scored in the third quarter, NCG scored five of them. In a low scoring game, NCG's 15-11 advantage was a tough challenge for Waimea to pull back in the final 10 minutes. Waimea found its rhythm in the final quarter and charged home to tie the game with two minutes remaining. Both teams traded one final goal but neither could scramble in a game-winner.

Nelson College and Waimea Combined will both hit the road this weekend in their quest for silverware in the UC Championship rugby competition. Nelson College finished third on the table after the regular season and will face second seeds Christchurch Boys High School in Christchurch for a place in the final. Waimea will travel over the hill to play Marlborough Boys' College in Blenheim in the plate semi-final, after they dispatched Rangiora High School 52-12 in Motueka. Waimea led only 14-12 at halftime but piled on 38 unanswered points from then on. Three tries to flanker Reuben Chubb and doubles to winger Callum Whitten and fullback Culainn Stringer were the catalyst for the big win. Waimea Combined beat Marlborough Boys' College 42-19 earlier in the season, so there’s a good chance Waimea’s resurgence under the combined name will continue for another week.

Mum wins Wanderers’ quad bike Andrew Board

Natalie Wilkes admits to being a “raffle donor” – someone who’s happy to buy a ticket but has no serious thoughts of actually winning. So when the phone call from Wanderers Sport Club manager Diane Drugemuller told her she had won first prize, a quad motorbike, she couldn’t believe. “I couldn’t stop laughing. I never win anything and was so happy. I had just got back from a run and my girlfriend was just leaving, so I yelled out ‘I’ve just got first prize.’ She said ‘what did you win?’, ‘A quad bike’, ‘what are you going to do with a quad bike!’ Natalie says she bought the ticket off her friend Suzy Kirk who is involved with Wanderers’ netball teams. “Everyone

Henry’s

knows I’m good for a ticket. I bought four, I had $20 so said ‘here you go’. It’s a good thing to do. I remember looking at the ticket and saying ‘you’ve got some seriously good prizes here’, but I didn’t think of winning anything, it was just a donation for me.” The raffle included a range of donated prizes with the partially donated quad bike from On Farm Agri Centre the main attraction. More than 2500 tickets were sold by players and supporters of the club’s rugby, cricket, netball and rugby league teams, raising $12,500. Diane says the money will be spent on the club’s facilities and player development. On Farm Agri’s Ian Biggs is also a committee member of the club who started playing for Wanderers as a jun-

He says the bike is a popular item. “They’re made in China and they’re really affordable, so they’re really popular with farmers but also good for hunting, fishing, recreation, everything.” Natalie, who lives in Monaco, says she isn’t sure what she will do with the bike but that her kids are excited to give riding it a go. “I’m just rapt to have won something, I never win anything so it’s pretty cool. “I hope you don’t mind that it’s gone to a middle-aged woman with children who’s not likely to have time on it,” she joked. Sponsors of the raffle were: On Farm Agri Centre, Farmlands, Richmond Mall, NBS, ASB, Plankville, Mitre 10 Mega, MTA voucher from Spring Grove garage, Village Cycles and Mad Butcher.

The Lantern Scones, tea and new friends Are you interested in meeting new people, hearing interesting speakers, or just getting out and about a bit more? If so, a new weekly get-together in Richmond could be right up your street. Tea and Talk is a new initiative being launched later this month, which offers a high morning tea of scones, cream and jam plus fun, friendship and new opportunities for people over 65.

It’s the brainchild of two local agencies – Age Concern Nelson Tasman and the Church on the Hill – with kind support from Tasman District Council, who wanted to offer more socialising opportunities in the area. “The idea is to bring folk together in a friendly setting, with morning tea, and occasional speakers and events on throughout the year,’”says Church on the Hill’s Seniors Team Leader, Yvonne Smyth. “Everyone over the age of 65 is welcome to pop along and come see what we’re up to.” Age Concern Nelson Tasman Manager Sue Tilby says she’s hopeful the initiative will get lots of support as there’s currently a lack of socialising opportunities for Richmond’s 65+ population. “We will be organising entertainment and interesting speakers from time to time, but really the whole aim of it is to bring folk together and see what they’d like to get from it. We’re really passionate about helping reduce social isolation in the district and see this as a good starting point,” she added. Tea and Talk kicks off with a special New Beginnings morning tea on Wednesday, 31 August at 10 am until 11.30 am, which will have a spring theme. It’s being held in the Richmond Seniors hall at 62 Oxford Street (next to Age Concern offices). There is a $3 charge. There is no need to register interest – simply turn up on the day. For further information call Age Concern Nelson Tasman on 544 7624 or Yvonne at Church on the Hill on 547 9350.

Book Review: Vanishing grace disappoints “Vanishing Grace: What happened to the Good News”— Philip Yancey, Hodder and Stoughton, 2014 In the past I have really enjoyed Philip Yancey’s books. I think he is very good at interpreting modern culture in terms of Christian faith. But I did not enjoy this book as much as I expected. There were two reasons for this. First, the culture that forms the background of the book is that of the USA, which is very different from New Zealand culture. In the USA certain types of Christian belief are very bound to political views and parties. This is less so in New Zealand. In the USA, people who were raised in churches are consciously rejecting their parents’ faith and leaving the church. This happened in New Zealand a generation ago. My second reason for being disappointed with the book was that I got bored with the endless stories of Christians doing good things. I know Christians can do good things and I am excited about that, but Yancey included far too many examples and after a certain point they did not illustrate any new point he was trying to make. I did like the idea behind the book. Yancey describes it as four short books. The first is concerned that

the world is thirsty for good news, for grace, but the church is not always good at dispensing grace. The second book looks at three types of people who are good at dispensing grace: pilgrims, activists and artists. The third book compares the good news of Christianity with both science, and other popular belief systems. The last book looks at the difficulties of being a Christian in a society when Christianity is viewed as another political lobby group. Yancey has identified a real and important issue for the church and offers hope for solutions. So you might enjoy this book if you share his concerns for the future.
