Greening doesn’t show up - again Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Councillors and members of the community have questioned the poor attendance record of Richmond Ward Councillor Mark Greening, who has missed 50 per cent of council meetings this year. Greening, who has been on the council since 2013, has the lowest attendance record of any councillor. He attended just six of twelve full council meetings between February 13 and June 4 and has not attended the four full council meetings on Zoom since April 21, also missing a regulatory committee meeting in March. There is a marked gap between Greening’s attendance record and the rest of the members around the council table, with seven councillors at full attendance for council meetings, three councillors who have been absent from just one meeting, and two council-

lors who have missed two meetings. Greening ran for Wellington City Council in 2010 in the Lambton Ward before gaining a seat in Tasman in 2013. This isn’t the first time Greening’s attendance record has been questioned. In his first term, between being elected in 2013 and January 2015, Greening attending only 21 out of 53. Greening also holds a directorship for the Nelson Airport, of which TDC has a 50 per cent shareholding. As a director, Greening picked up $23,019 during the year 2018-19, on top of his base councillor salary of $38,262, meaning he was paid $61,281. This is more than anyone else around the council table, excluding the then-mayor and deputy mayor, Richard Kempthorne and Tim King. Greening only missed one meeting out of twelve for the Nelson Airport Board meetings in the year 2019.

Yoghurt pottles, sour cream containers and plastic sushi trays are just a few of the plastic items that will no longer be accepted throughout Tasman for recycling after July 1. The new recycling policy means that only plastics that can recycled in New Zealand will be collected. These are plastics that are labelled with the numbers 1, 2, or 5. Soft drink bottles, water bottles, milk bottles, clear meat trays, bathroom, kitchen and laundry products, as well as ice-cream containers are all examples of plastics that will continue to be recycled. These three types of plastics are the most common, making up 85 – 90 per cent of the plastics we

use. Plastics that will no longer be collected are marked with the numbers 3, 4, 6 or 7. These plastics are used to create things like single serve yoghurt pottles and sour cream containers. Tasman District Council Waste Management leader David Stephenson says that the focus will be recycling products that can be processed and recycled with confidence. “That means plastics that can be recycled in New Zealand,” David says. “These are high-quality plastics and they can be easily remade in New Zealand.” David says that other plastics, while a small part of the mix, can create headaches for the recycling system. “When we send our number one plastics off, things like soft drink bottles, we can watch them go to

David says that when plastics are shipped off overseas, you lose that visibility. David is also urging consumers to think about their recyclables at both ends. “When you’re buying a product, check to make sure it is a 1, 2, or 5 type of plastic – that way you know that you can recycle it and it won’t go to landfill.” He said that while council has a voice, the real power lies with consumers. “We know that collectively the individuals in our community can make a big difference. “They can have a huge influence on manufacturers and retailers. If a product is not made of recyclable plastic or not clearly labelled, please pick up the phone, send an email or get in contact with the manufacturer asking them to make a change with their product to an acceptable packaging.”

Cash boost for trades and apprentices welcomed

Richmond painters Gavin Lambert and Troy Perry welcom the government’s decision to scrap fees for apprentices from July 1. The $320million programme aims to stave off a sharp drop in training as occurred after the global financial crisis, when trainees dipped from 133,000 to 83,000 nationally. Gavin, who owns his own painting and decorating business and has helped train at least six apprentices in his time, says the move is full of positives. “It’s brilliant,” he says. “I’m a big believer that you need apprentices because they are our future.” He says, if the cost-factor for both employers and apprentices can be eased, then it will be a big boost for his industry. “It’s the best thing the government could have done and our industry is crying out for them.” Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology chief executive Liam Sloan says his organisation is able to handle the expected influx of new students wanting to learn a trade.

Civil Defence Covid hotline huge success Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A regional 0800 number that was set up by Civil Defence to support the community during the Covid crisis is now being scaled down after what is being described as a huge success. Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Management group controller, Roger Ball, said the regional 0800 that people needing urgent assistance used to get food, medication, or other supplies, was designed to be a safety net. “We didn’t want anybody falling through the cracks.” Roger describes the emergency number as a ‘touchpoint’ for people. “Not everybody could get through to frontline services, so we put the 0800 number together so people could talk to someone local and get help.” Throughout the crisis, the welfare hotline received over 560 calls and assisted people throughout Nelson, Richmond and the wider Tasman region. Roger says the point of difference for the welfare hotline was for those who had trouble accessing food and critical supplies during Alert Level 4, including those over 70s who were asked to stay at home but may not have had a support network of friends and family. Some of the calls the hotline received

Roger Ball, from Civil Defence, says that the local welfare hotline was designed to stop those who needed help falling through the cracks. Photo: Matt McCrorie. were requests for food, goods and services. Other calls were from people looking for urgent accommodation or need-

ing help with mental well-being. In these cases, Civil Defence staff were able to connect them to an organisation that could help meet their specific needs. Rapid Relief, Urban search and rescue teams and civil defence staff all worked on the ground to assist those who needed help, whether it was people who couldn’t get to the supermarket and needed food or urgent prescriptions filled from a pharmacy. Roger says that the volunteers who worked tirelessly during Alert Level 4 did a fantastic job. “I really take my hat off to those who were volunteering in those situations,” Roger said. “We were aware that neighbours, friends and family were supporting each other, along with church groups and iwi, but we didn’t want to take a chance that there were going to be people falling through the cracks,” Roger says. “We didn’t want people to go a weekend without food because they couldn’t get to the supermarket.” Roger says that the volume of calls that the welfare hotline received showed that the community was really looking after each other. As restrictions have eased, the welfare hotline is no longer taking calls, but the model of having a local welfare hotline is one that Civil Defence will look at for future emergencies.

New property publication gives outstanding coverage and is totally local For the first time in decades, the region’s property listing publication is being published for locals by locals. The publishers of Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly have joined forces to offer a property publication for people wanting to sell their home via the region’s top real estate agencies. The new product, aptly named Property Weekly, will be available to be picked up from 80 drop points around Nelson and Tasman every Thursday. It will feature property listings from some of the region’s top agencies like Bayleys, Harcourts, Ray White, Mike Pero and more. Because of its large spread, Property Weekly will get outstanding coverage for people listing their homes with these brands. Previously, the property listings were published by then Australianowned Fairfax Media and then German-owned Bauer media. Property Weekly is 100% owned in NelsonTasman. Mike Pero Nelson and Richmond owner Craig Hamilton says support local was a big reason why he decided to go with the new Property Weekly. “We were pretty disappointed the Property Press stopped printing, but with what’s been happening with Covid we thought it was good to go local. Fundraising dries up from page 1 Marlborough Rescue Helicopter said, “Pretty much all of our fund sources dried up”. Helirescue had to cancel all their fundraising events over lockdown to the equivalent of $100k. And although it’s not the biggest component of their fund sources these cancellations had other impacts. Paula says, “It’s the public awareness of what our organisation does that’s also been majorly affected”. It’s given organisations like Helirescue a chance to reflect on how reliant they are on fundraising sources like gaming machines through Pub Charity. With pubs closed, all the funds sourced from the gaming machines evaporated and future payments might not come through for another five months. “We had a lovely gentleman come in just before lockdown wanting to donate $10,000. Two days later he donated $5,000 because he wasn’t confident enough with what the future of the coronavirus would look like”. Meanwhile, the helicopters are still heading out on missions. During the lockdown, Helirescue had 40 missions, twice the previous month’s amount and 10 missions more than the same time last

year. Part of these missions were stress-related emergencies specific to the virus. “The stress-related emergencies we’ve been seeing during Coronavirus are similar to the emergencies seen during the Christchurch earthquake”. Paula has contacted their major stage holders, however, and they’re still on board along with a lot of their regular donors. They also received some more individual, one-off donations during the lockdown. People made use of their less busy lives to check out how their bank accounts were looking and make donations accordingly. For sports organisations like Wanderer’s Sports Club, a resilience fund is being filtered down to them from the government via Sports Tasman as a result of the virus. There is also the chance to access a no-interest loan from the government if it’s paid back within 12 months. Diane Drogemuller, club manager of the Wanderer’s Sports Club says, “we’re in the middle of a shortened games season”. As well as losing the funds from gaming machines the clubrooms have lost funds as a direct result of the loss of games.

University entrance is back on for students Jacqui Rawson Year 13 students nervous about getting into university next year due to coronavirus disruptions, have had some relief with the government’s assistance announcement last Wednesday. Education Minister Chris Hipkins confirmed there will be temporary changes to the National Certificate of Educational Achievement and University Entrance requirements. Garin College year 13 student Max Francis says, “where a student might have had to gain 50 credits, they now only have to obtain 46.” That equates to one less whole internal or external paper the students have to produce. It may be the lifeline that allows students teetering on the wire to get across the line and off to university. Those most impacted by having to study at home were students requiring specialised resources to complete their portfolios, such as Arts and Food Technology students. Loans for women, but no takers Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A local non-profit group is struggling to find applicants for its interest-free loan programme. The Nelson Angel Women’s Loan Fund offers small, interest-free loans to women from across the Nelson, Tasman, and Marlborough regions, who would not otherwise have access to credit. The group is is a community-based organisation run by trustees. The loans could be to start a business, for education, or to help women getting back into the workforce. For Brightwater woman Ginny Waide, the loan has made a world of difference. Ginny is training to become a facilitator for Inamojo, a children’s programme which works with children in schools to build resilience and promote well-being for primary-aged students. Once Virginia completes her training, she can run the programme as her own business. “At first I looked at the cost of it and thought, ‘it will take me forever to save that much money.’” However, after a friend pointed Ginny to the Angel Fund, she was able to get an interest-free loan to start her training. “It’s such a wonderful thing to be offering women.” Ginny says that the loan fund has enabled her to get a leg up after a series of difficult circumstances, such as being made redundant at the same time as finding out she was pregnant.

The Nelson Angel Women’s Loan Fund offers a flexible lending policy, with most loans between $250 and $1500. She says that there will be a lot of uncertainty around travel in the future and things are changing daily with operators. “We have the access and the knowledge to help.” Owner and operator of House of Travel Richmond, Amanda Radovanovich, says that travel agents played a big role in getting Kiwis, who were stranded in various countries overseas, back home when Covid-19 swept the globe. “We were really busy helping

people just get home. “We have had so many people say to us ‘thank god you were there,’ especially those with families trying to get their children home from Europe and overseas.” Amanda agrees that the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 crisis has proved the value of travel agents. “There is a lot of uncertainty, and our value is that we can directly liaise with airlines and suppliers and that we are available twenty-four seven to our customers.” While there was an initial downturn in business, Kelly says that the travel broker industry has proven how valuable it is and will come out stronger once the pandemic is over. “We are here to ride the storm and come out better at the other end.”

Charity shops ‘busier than Christmas’ Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Local charity shops have seen a huge boom in business since they reopened at the beginning of Alert Level 2. Richmond Hospice Shop manager Anete Smith says that it’s been like ‘Christmas every day.’ “We’ve had regular customers returning for their op-shopping fix.” Anete says that the store is receiving 1.5 times more donations than normal. A lot of people used their spare time during lockdown to clean and clear out old clothes and furniture, and Anete thinks that this may be why charity shops like hers have seen an increase in donations over the last few weeks. Clothes and furniture have been the top sellers. “We’re trading better than Christmas at the moment.” Anete says that people have become more mindful of shopping local and supporting community services like the Hospice Shop. The shop reopened at level 2 and Anete says they have only got around 80% of their volunteers back, but it’s not because there is a lack of work. “There are a few people who are

more vulnerable and are wanting to be cautious. But there is more than enough work to do.” While charity shops like the Hospice Shop have been hammered, it’s not just the bargains that are flying out the door. Anete says that they’ve seen steady sales across a variety of price points, including more expensive items. “There is something to suit everyone. There are a variety of prices at a charity shop, and we have some interesting things. There are things that we have that you’re not going to find in regular shops.” Anete says that people have become committed to the idea of shopping local and supporting local. “Our funds really do stay in the area. You can’t get more local than us.” “We have to be mindful that we are going to be low in terms of income – and that money has to come from somewhere, because the hospice hasn’t got it and they need it.” The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board provides 55 per cent of the funding for hospice, leaving a funding shortfall of 45 per cent.“That shortfall needs to be filled by fundraising and the charity shops, if we don’t provide that where is it going to come from? Those services need to keep happening,” says Anete.

Sculptures on the island Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

People have taken advantage of having more time on their hands, during the lockdown, to get creative on our beaches. The tools were their hands, and their medium, tossed up from the ocean, was in never-ending supply. “The amount of creativity was amazing”, says Appleby local Susie Dean. Susie is from Appleby but has been making frequent walks along Moturoa/Rabbit Island’s beaches for the last nine months. There has always been the odd sculpture on the beach but since lockdown level 3 there has been a noticeable increase in the number being built. “We had beautiful weather during lockdown level 3”, says Susie. People have used the weather and their extra free time to get down to the beach and play around with what

they found. To take the time and put the extra effort in to see what they could produce on a grander and more detailed way. “It’s shown us the human spirit of resilience and creativity when things seem to be falling apart around us”, says Susie. There are currently about 15 formations on the west side of Rabbit Island. All of them using driftwood as the base of their construction. All are unique. Verandas have been added to some while others have adornments on a less grand scale. Plastic bottles have been placed on the top of some, reminiscent of the angel on top of the Christmas tree. Some are such large pieces of construction there would have had to be a team of creatives working together. Finding one huge log, they’ve used their combined energy and imagination to drag other logs and debris up into position to build a structure and make a statement around it.

Music students get creative over lockdown Matt McCrorie Reporter

matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A group of Waimea College music students got creative over lockdown, using their free time to create a 60-person original song and music video. The concept was simple enough. Each student had to send in a 10 to 20 second video of them playing something in the key of C at 120 beats per minute. Music teacher Nick Sharpe says that idea came about on the day before lockdown. “We were thinking about how to keep music students occupied and creative during lockdown.” It was up to year 13 student Jack Rollinson to make sense of it all. “His name came up straight away.” Jack, who is music student and guitarist, has been teaching himself how to edit and put music together over the last few years. “It was a big task, but it kept me busy through lockdown,” Jack says. It took Jack two weeks to put the music together and create the song from scratch, and then another week to edit the video. “We started with the vocals as the centre of the song, so everything is based around that, and then I worked forwards and backwards from that point on,” Jack says. Nick says that the project kickstarted students’ creativity and engagement for the rest of the lockdown period. “It got some momentum going to get students engaged and working creatively.” This momentum worked. For the rest of the lockdown, Nick says that music students were writing songs, and emailing teachers videos of them performing and practicing, to get feedback. Nick says the response to the project has been fantastic. “People have loved it. I just walked through the computer suite and every single student was watching it, it’s a cool way of getting them engaged and creating.” The song can be viewed on the Waimea College YouTube page.

The Tasman District Council would like to remind dog owners that microchipping will save you time and money. Having your dog go missing is a stressful, time -consuming and potentially expensive experience. A dog found at large can be scanned for a microchip by an Animal Control Officer or veterinarian. Then microchipped dogs are reunited with their owner with minimal delay and cost, while dogs that cannot be identified are impounded, which is stressful for them and costly Karen Bailey getting Holly ready for a dog wash at Town & Counfor the owner. The Green Party has announced its candidates for both the Nelson and the West Coast/Tasman electorates ahead of this year’s general elections. Dr Aaron Stallard is the candidate for Nelson, with Steve Richards standing in West Coast / Tasman electorate. Dr Stallard, announced earlier this month as the Nelson candidate, is a geologist, father, and business owner who says he is passionate about both community development and the natural environment. He was finally persuaded to enter politics when he saw the alarming rate at which global warming was affecting the natural environment. Aaron says, “The Greens have a vision of an equitable society in which we treasure and protect the environment and I can’t wait to be the voice for nature and social justice in the Nelson campaign.”

The man behind the Newman name Dianne Scott The Newmans story begins in 1842 in Hampshire England, when Thomas Newman (agricultural labourer) and his wife Mary answered the call for new settlers. They and their 6 children migrated to New Zealand aboard the Bolton. On arrival in Nelson their first sight was of the Fifeshire, which was stranded on Arrow Rock. (now Fifeshire Rock). At first the family slept on bracken beds and cooked in the open. They then moved out to their first property at River Terrace in Brightwater. The older children helped their father clear bush and plant seeds while Mary did her best to teach the younger children. By 1865, their second son William had begun transporting provisions for the goldminers at Wakamarina and Canvastown. His accidental drowning crossing the Wairau River in 1878 brought brothers Thomas and Harry back to the family farm.

By 1904, the Newman Brothers owned 10 coaches, wagons and vehicles, running passanger services between Nelson, Blenheim, and Westport. Photo: Supplied. In 1878 the government called for tenders for the mail service from Foxhill to Murchison. The two brothers put everything they owned into having a coach built in Nelson which could carry 6

passengers and mail. The coach cost 120 pounds, roughly the value of the annual contract, and their first trip was in 1879. This was the beginning of a reliable service which carried mail and

passengers from Nelson to the West Coast for the next century. When the Newmans secured the contract for a full service between Nelson and Blenheim in 1891 a new base was established

Single tramper rescued from Kahurangi National Park The Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter airlifted an injured tramper from the Kahurangi National Park at the top of the South Island last Sunday. The same national park where two trampers were lost for 18 days, at the end of May. The 60-year-old man had a leg injury and was located at Venus Hut because of the use of a personal locator

beacon. The activation of the beacon took place at 7.15 am and by 8.36 am the Helirescue team had landed and the injured man deposited at Nelson Hospital. A quick mission which allowed the team to be airborne for their next mission, a transfer from Murchison to Nelson Hospital less than half an hour later.

Nelson Matters

Nelson is fortunate to have five top secondary Colleges with Waimea, Garin, Nayland, Nelson College for Girls and Nelson College. I have seen this excellence in my work as an MP, former Education Minister and parent of four teenagers. Three current issues concern me. The Government is pushing for restrictive college zoning to be introduced to Nelson next year. This means parents and students lose the choice of which college to attend. Our colleges have different strengths. The diversity of single sex, co-ed, religious, town and country colleges is good for Nelson. Our children are not all

the same and thrive in different environments. Parents and students having a choice of school also keeps the pressure on our colleges to strive to do better. Each of our colleges have been through difficult patches that have required reform. The loss of students and roll decline have been key drivers for change. The danger of restricting parental choice is that our colleges become tired and unresponsive to the changing needs of our young people. The impact of Nayland College being forced by Government to have an enrolment zone will most impact on Nelson city families who

will lose the option of a co-ed education. I successfully joined with Nelson College a decade ago in opposing the Ministry imposing an enrolment zone banning boys from the wider Nelson region. My preferred policy for all five of our Nelson colleges is that families get to decide which school best suits their student, not Government. A second issue is unfair funding. Labour promised in 2017 to abolish school donations at all schools, replacing it with funding of $150 per student, but in Government, only did it for some schools. Two of our five secondary schools missed out, costing Waimea College $250,000 a year and Garin

in Hardy Street, becoming the headquarters of the firm for the next 100 years. By 1904 the Newman Brothers owned 10 coaches, wagons and other vehicles, running passenger services between Nelson, Blenheim and Westport. During WW1 they sold 50 of their horses to the army, slowly replacing their coaches with motor cars. In 1918 the last horsedrawn coach was withdrawn. It was the beginning of a new era. From then on, Newmans Coachlines would grow and prosper. Newmans remained a familyowned business until 1972 when it merged with trucking and mining company, Transport (Nelson) Ltd. There followed a period of expansion when the Newmans brand encompassed tours, rental cars and campervans and a shortlived airline. In 1994, Newmans was integrated into the InterCity group. “Yes folks, when you go Newmans, you go with a friend.”

Outstanding Community Service Award Nominations close 30th June Nominations for the Outstanding Community Service Award will close on the 30th June 2020. This is an annual award driven by the Tasman District Council for residents of the Tasman area. It’s to recognise those people in the community who volunteer their time and energy for the benefit of others on an ongoing basis. These are the people who are devoted to working tire-

lessly for their neighbours, schools, clubs, churches and service organisations. The ones who do what they do for the good it brings to others without any payment or recognition. The nominees will be evaluated by a committee comprising the Mayor and other members of Council and a celebration for the recipient of the award will be held in July.

544 Waimea Road, Nelson

College $77,000. The Government has created an anomaly where some colleges have to collect significant family donations and some not. This needs fixing. The third big issue for our colleges is the huge loss of international students from the Covid-19 emergency. Some of our colleges are facing losses of $500,000. The Government has denied access to the wage subsidy for affected staff. I have written to the Minister of Education appealing for assistance for our five colleges but to no avail. The priorities are wrong when the Government has given tens of millions to racing and professional sport. The Colleges are

having to make staff redundant. These huge losses will impact on the quality of education at all our colleges. Nelson’s high standard of secondary schools is something we must protect. The strong reputation helps attract skilled professionals to our region knowing their children will have access to a top education. We should maintain choice between colleges. Government funding should not force some colleges to charge significant donations and others not. Our colleges also urgently need assistance to deal with the fallout from the loss of international students. Advt.

Wanderers coach Glenn Grant hopes his team can salvage the momentum they thought they had, when top-flight club rugby returns on June 27. After a first-up win over Nelson in March, hopes were high for a strong season before the Coronavirus pandemic halted play. “The boys were pretty fit and ready so it was a bit of a bugger to have that pulled out from

under us,” he says. “In the win against Nelson, I could see everything that we had been working on for the past year was coming together. “However, those points we got carry-over to now.” He says a committed mindset would be crucial to a successful season. “There were a lot of rumours floating around about what the season may look like or if there would even be a season this year at all. “I think that once we get the first game under the belt, it will

be back to business as usual. “We just have to have positive attitudes and get them back into working hard for each other. “We had a good team unit before all this and it was something we emphasised last week at training, that if we got the opportunity to have a season then we’d try to make the most of it. “Because it will be a short, sharp season, we’ll have to get off to a good start otherwise we may find ourselves in the middle of the pack,” Glenn says.

First Wallace Shield event run Yvonne West Despite a gloomy prediction of Saturday’s weather, it was warm and sunny for the first of the three Wallace Shield crosscountry races at Rabbit Island. The atmosphere was buzzing with a cheerful crowd of adults and children. This was a ‘run without your watch’ race. The 78 competitors estimated their

time to run or walk around one, two or three 1.8 km laps of beach and track. The person closest to their estimated time ‘won’ the race, and this year it was Hayden Squance, only 9 seconds off his estimated time. Nicola Hodges was 2nd, and Kim Woollett, 3rd, 19 and 20 seconds respectively off their estimated times. The race was still very com-

petitive, with Andre Bonny recording the fastest time of 18.57mins, just 10s ahead of Hayden. All Wallace Shield races are ‘points races’, where the winner receives 1 point, 2nd place 2 points and so on up to a maximum of 20 points. The winner of the shield will be the person with the lowest number of points over the three races.

s w e N g n i h s Fi Brownie points Tracey Meek Launching early to avoid the boat ramp rush, two keen Dawnbreakers members set off to their favourite spot X for a quiet, yet hopeful fish. The day began chilly, but as the sun rose and the coffee was poured the snapper began to bite – It was going to be a great day! With little wind, just 2 knots and calm seas and fish biting, it was the perfect morning.... Until things took a turn for the worse. A brief quiet patch meant time to sip that coffee, now luke warm, when disaster struck. The rod and reel sitting in the new Railblaza suddenly jumped out the holder. Coffee went flying through the boat in a mad attempt to catch the rod but all they could do was watch it disappear over the side.

Sadness loomed as the reality of seeing their brand new rod and reel sink to the depths of the ocean sank in. A call to a friend to relay the sad story and some hopeful words of “keep fishing you never know what might happen as the tide turns” was not enough to lift the spirits. Like all keen fishos they continued to fish. The tide turned and so did their luck. Thinking he had a tangle, he asked his wife, “What colour line do you have?” “No, not mine”. Slowly he pulled up his line and tangled to his braid was someone else’s line. Pulling it in carefully he soon discovered a little weight – not from a fish either. They couldn’t believe it, he had snagged the missing fishing rod and reel. What are the chances of that? Suffice to say he was in the good books for the rest of the day.

The first of three Wallace Shield races was held last weekend at Rabbit Island. Photo: Supplied.

Phil says his club wanted to get back to racing as soon as possible. “We wanted to target grassroots stuff specifically and get families back socialising again,” he says. “We’ve been biding our time and we had this event planned pre-Covid, so it will be great to get it done.” Motorcycling New Zealand has also waived their entry

Financial barriers must be removed as much as possible for people to play sport post-Coronavirus. The questions outweigh the answers as community sport looks set to return over the next few weeks. While it is a positive games will resume on the fields, courts and turfs around the region, but just how will they function in the months and years that follow? In the short-term, how will the winter and summer sports work with each other to fill the calendar. Most winter sports will be eager to have as full a season as possible and that may mean stretching their season beyond the normal dates of competition. Not only could sports like cricket, tennis and bowls be affected. There is also the impact on farming communities. Sometimes rural life trumps weekly sport. The financial impact is the huge elephant in the room. With money tight for so many at this time, financial support from sponsors and players will likely be at a premium. As will grant money from gaming machines which have not been played during the lockdown period. Sports that can make themselves accessible without financial boundaries are likely to thrive in the short to mid-term. Sports like running and swimming have the inside track and it will be up to other sports and clubs to try to remove barriers which stop people from playing. Going forward, several hundred dollar sports subscriptions could be seen as a luxury for many. I know rugby, in particular, is looking at cutting their affiliation fees and other sports must follow suit.

Dangerous roadside trees removed for free In conjunction with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), Tasman District Council is offering a free service to remove hazardous trees from rural roadsides. The aim of this project is to improve the safety of our roads and redeploy workers from all industries affected by the COVID-19 response. We’d like to know about any problems in your area, particularly: • Overhanging trees or branches that could fall onto the footpath or road. • Overgrown trees that reduce road users' views of the road. • Roadside trees that are interfering with overhead power lines. Fill in the online submission at tasman.govt.nz (search = tree hazard), or email us at projects@tasman.govt.nz, with your name, contact phone number, the location of the hazard and a brief description of the problem. If you can, please provide photos.

Apply for a rates rebate before 30 June The deadline for applications for a rates rebate for the 2019/2020 rating year is 30 June 2020. Rebates are based on your household income, the amount of your rates, and the number of dependents you have. You can estimate if you’re eligible for a rebate using your income for the tax year ending 31 March 2019 at dia.govt.nz – search ‘rates rebate’. You can apply for a rates rebate if: • You pay the rates on the address that you live at; and • You were living at the address at the beginning of the rating year (1 July); and • Your name is recorded in the Rating Information Database (RID) as ratepayer. You cannot claim a rates rebate if the property is used mainly for commercial purposes such as farming or business. Application forms and more information are available at Council offices or online at tasman.govt.nz. You’ll need to provide income information so your rebate can be worked out. Check the website for details of the documentation you need to supply or give the helpful customer services team a call on 03 543 8400.

Applicant: Nelson Speedway Association Incorporated Location: 123 Lansdowne Road, Richmond Legal Description: Lot 1 DP 10914, Pt Lot 2 DP 10914 Land Use (Application RM191306): Land use consent to continue a recreational activity which is Speedway racing in breach of noise levels where the frequency of 15 race meetings per year is proposed to be varied from the existing resource consent, as follows: • Meetings able to be held closer together than the existing ‘fortnightly’ (14 days apart) restriction; • The ability to hold two separate two day events where racing will occur on two consecutive days and each day of racing will be considered a single meeting for the purpose of the 15 meetings cap. The application also seeks the ability to hold a fireworks display at one race meeting annually, being a new activity. These proposed new arrangements for Speedway race meetings are proposed to start from the 2020/21 racing season. Submissions close Friday 26 June 2020. For the full notice, go to tasman.govt.nz and use the keyword search “nelson speedway” or “speedway racing”.

Changes coming for plastic recycling Starting from 1 July we’ll only be collecting plastics that can be recycled in New Zealand – these are the ones labelled with 1, 2, and 5. These three plastics are the most common, representing around 85 – 90% of the plastics we use. Most of the containers that you use will still be recycled: soft drink and water bottles, clear plastic meat trays, plastic milk bottles, bathroom, kitchen, and laundry products, and ice-cream, butter and takeaway containers. The plastics that we will not be collecting from 1 July are plastics 3, 4, 6 and 7. These plastics are used in some food and product packaging like single serve yoghurt pottles and most sour cream containers. These cannot be recycled in New Zealand and are very difficult to find an overseas market for. There is also concern that some of these plastics may not be recycled appropriately. So please start thinking about the plastics that you buy now, reduce plastic where you can, start checking the number and aim to buy only 1, 2 and 5 ahead of the changeover date on 1 July.

Look for numbers on the bottom of plastics

RM191308 – Water permit for the ‘take’ of water associated with the de-watering of a pond. The site is zoned Residential in the Tasman Resource management Plan. Submissions close Monday 29 June 2020.
