It’s official: Richmond is the sunniest town in New Zealand. NIWA awarded the sunniest title to the town earlier this week after its new weather station at the Richmond Racecourse racked up
2840 sunshine hours, 258 more than second-placed Blenheim. It’s the first time Richmond has won the title, because it’s the first full year the new weather station has been operating. Nelson finished almost 400 hours behind its neighbour, with the

newer technology at the Richmond station helping it record more hours. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne was happy to gently rib Nelson and the others towns which have traditionally fought over the title. “I’m glad those oth-
er places are recognising the pull of Richmond,” he joked. “Let’s just say I love new technology,” he added, a nod to the newer station. He says the title is “wonderful” for Richmond and can be used as a marketing tool. “We’re seen a great surge of activ-
ity and interest in the district and this will only help us. It’s great news for Richmond and for Tasman.” Another Tasman town, Takaka, finished in third place with 2534 hours of sunshine, while New Plymouth was in fourth.

“My New Year’s resolution is to keep my fitness up. I go to the Richmond Aquatic Centre at least twice a week. Last year wasn’t a very good year so 2017 is going to be the year.”
“My New Year’s resolution is to get out of Nelson. Possibly to Christchurch, I’ve got friends down there and there’s lot’ of IT jobs. I’ve just finished my certificate in IT.”
“I did make one, to think positively and make the most of everything. I’m getting older and everyday means a lot so I don’t want to be moaning about problems.”
“I don’t have a New Year’s resolution - I’m probably a bit past it. Just looking forward to this year being better than last.”
Coastguard call outs up 50% Kate Russell Nelson’s Coastguard has had the busiest start to the holiday period in years with a 50 per cent increase of call outs on the same time last year. Coastguard Nelson president Wayne Harrison says they have already responded to a range of call outs - including an impressive two-minute rescue where they happened to be in the right place at the right time. “We were on our way out of The Cut to do some training when we spotted a windsurfer in trouble, so we nipped over to him, pulled him aboard and took him back to shore,” he says. The biggest and most challenging was the search for the missing person in the water at the start of the holiday period, with five vessels on the water in the height of the search.
Nelson Coastguard president Wayne Harrison says it’s been a busy start to summer for his volunteers. Photo: Kate Russell. “It was a Friday evening with rough sea conditions and rain. It made trying to locate a person in the water very difficult,” says Wayne. The person was eventually brought to safety by the Coastguard. “We had the Coastguard Nelson CRV, three vessels from Nelson Surf Life Saving Club and the Nelson Harbourmaster’s

boat. The Westpac Helicopter was up and we had a Land SAR Team on Rabbit Island and Nelson Police spotting from Princes Drive. And not forgetting the brilliant team co-ordinating it all back at the Rescue Centre.” But Wayne says the most common call out so far this summer has been tow-ins – due to engine failure or boats running out of

fuel. Wayne says that they always expect to be busier than normal during the holiday period, mainly due to there being more traffic on the water, but reminds all boaties of the five simple rules to keep them safe in the water – life jackets, skipper responsibility, communications, marine weather and avoiding alcohol. With 25 volunteers, Wayne says that they are always prepared for a call out – even in their family holiday time. “All of the Coastguard Nelson team are volunteers and each one of us knows we can be called upon at any time and any day to go to the assistance of a boatie in need, it is what we train for,” he says. “I would also like to thank our local community, we are fully aware that Coastguard Nelson wouldn’t exist without public support.”

Hundreds of people have been making their way along Rabbit Island beach to see the body of a sperm whale which washed up on December 30. The fully grown male, which measured 18 metres in length and weighed 50 tonnes, was seen swimming in Tasman Bay on Thursday, December 29, but was found dead the next day. It was reported to the Department of Conservation on Friday morning. DOC rangers in a boat monitored the dead sperm whale in the sea before it beached, near the Blind Channel end of Rabbit Island, later that day. The sperm whale was also
found to have thick abrasions to its skin which could have resulted from contact with a propeller. The abrasions however, were superficial and it is unclear how the whale actually died. Local iwi have blessed the whale and removed its jawbone and teeth, as agreed under DOC protocols with iwi for management of stranded whales. While DOC initially planned to move the body of the whale and bury it, using two large diggers, their attempts were unsuccessful due to its massive size. “The whale has been tethered to prevent it floating off from where it is beached, in a tidal

Queen St upgrade to start Feb 7 Simon Bloomberg The Tasman District Council is determined to minimise the impact of the Queen St upgrade by staging the work and ensuring that shops and businesses will have pedestrian access at all times during the 14-month project. The $11million upgrade, which starts on February 7, is designed to increase the capacity of stormwater pipes and direct water away from buildings to prevent the flooding that devastated the central business district in 2011 and 2013. Ageing water and wastewater pipes and telecommunications and power services will be also replaced and the streetscape modernised to create a more pedestrian-friendly space for the community. Although council’s programme delivery manager Russell McGuigan concedes there will be disruptions to businesses on Queen St, he says the upgrade is critical to the future of the town. Russell says one of the keys to the project’s success will be minimising the impact of the work and council has specified that in the contract that was awarded to Hawkins Infrastucture Ltd. “It’s not a case of we want to do it, there are essential services there that need replacing,” Russell says. “The project could be delayed a year or two but it can’t not happen.
Tasman District Council staff Russell McGuigan, left, and Jeannie Homesley and Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne with plans showing the timing for the Queen St upgrade. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. “The asbestos cement water pipes are 50 years old and could break any time - they are also too small now. That’s the main water supply to the whole business district and it’s essential for fire fighting so they have to be replaced.” The existing 900mm stormwater pipe will also be replaced with a 1200mm pipe while the 300mm water pipe will be replaced with a 375mm pipe. Chorus and Network Tasman will also be replacing their ageing infrastructure allowing Chorus to update the
Richmond telecommunications exchange which is one of the oldest in the country. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne also acknowledges that retailers will be impacted by the construction but says the devastation of the 2011 and 2013 floods made it clear that the upgrade was critical. “The flooding we had made it clear we had to resolve the problem,” Richard says. “It will be a big improvement in the long term.” Russell says the timing of the
work will be critical with Hawkins completing the upgrade in six different stages or boxes along the length of Queen St. The boxes will be fully enclosed to ensure that disruption, at any one time, is limited to a small section of the street. Construction will start on the first section, between the intersection of Gladstone Rd to near McIndoe Place, on February 7 and continue in that section until mid-May. It will then progress up Queen St with the next four sec-
tions starting and finishing from mid-April to mid-July, mid-June to the end of September, end of August to mid-November and mid-October to December 1 respectively. The final stage near Wensley Rd will start on February 6 next year and finish at the end of April to avoid disruptions during the Christmas period. Although the sections of Queen St will be closed to traffic during those times Russell says “we guarantee pedestrian access to the shops at all times”. “We have given an undertaking that, during business hours, people will have access to shops so we’ll try and do most of the work on the footpaths at night.” Russell says Hawkins is employing a full-time liaison officer to ensure that retailers, businesses and the public are kept fully informed during the project. The officer will be available 24-7 on an 0800 number. Although the stormwater piping and the road reconstruction are the two big ticket items in the project, Russell says the new streetscape design will be one of the most exciting and visible changes. “We’ll have a very nice pedestrian-friendly environment with no curbs and wide footpaths and lots of trees where people will want to come and shop. Richmond will have a very nice main street when it’s finished.”
ADVERTORIAL
Bringing life back into focus for over 40s The need for reading glasses is a reality most people are resigned to as they get older and their near vision begins to deteriorate. But new laser vision technology is changing that reality and can mean never wearing glasses again. The Laser Blended Vision procedure was introduced to New Zealand by the team at Wellington Eye Centre, and their Specialist Ophthalmologist, Dr Andrew Logan.
With Laser Blended Vision, the range of focus in both eyes is extended, allowing the brain to merge the images and create a blend zone that is in focus for both eyes.
Dr Logan’s been pioneering groundbreaking technologies in New Zealand for the last 22 years, always looking for the absolute best solutions for vision correction.
The procedure is performed with one of the most advanced and sophisticated LASIK laser eye surgery systems available anywhere in the world, something that reflects Dr Logan’s ‘no compromise’ approach to both his patients and his profession.
The introduction of Laser Blended Vision has already proved lifechanging for many as it enables more people to enjoy excellent distance and near vision after laser eye surgery. “Traditional technologies have meant compromising the long distance vision in one eye to improve near vision. However, this can sometimes leave people with a blurry intermediate zone as the brain struggles to fuse the two images together”, says Dr Logan.
“Each one of the procedures we provide offers its own advantages. What’s exciting about Laser Blended Vision is its ability to correct both near and far-sightedness effectively for all patients who need, or are expected to need, reading glasses”, says Dr Logan. “96% of our patients aged between 40 and 70 never need to wear glasses at all.”
Working with Dr Logan to achieve these results is a team of skilled and experienced staff who are dedicated to providing information, answering questions, and ensuring patients are supported throughout the entire process. Suitability assessments can be performed by your local optometrist, while the actual procedure takes place at Dr Logan’s Wellington surgery. Nelson patients are offered free boutique hotel accommodation in Wellington for themselves and their partner, organised and paid for by the Eye Centre. The procedure itself is painless and only takes a few minutes, and most patients are thrilled to report they’re feeling great at the follow-up appointment the next day. Complimentary follow-up care continues with your local optometrist for a year afterwards to help patients adapt to their new vision and to ensure it’s an entirely positive experience. Contact the team to find out whether laser eye surgery is a suitable option for you.
Freedom in the blink of an eye Forget all about needing glasses to read or see what’s happening in the distance, with Laser Blended Vision – one of the most advanced laser technologies available. Introduced to New Zealand by the Wellington Eye Centre, it could be the vision solution that you’ve been looking for.

Aerial antics thrill at Tasman Skatepark Tour Simon Bloomberg
Skaters and scooter and BMX riders of all ages showed their incredible skills, including a sensational back flip by scooter rider Tuts Kinita, at the second round of the Tasman Skatepark Tour at Mapua on Monday night. Tuts was the standout performer at the first round in Takaka on Saturday and thrilled the crowd again on Monday when landed two back flips to win the senior

scooter section. The veteran of four Skatepark Tours first tried the black flip in a foam pit when he was in Wellington last year and showed he had perfected the move at Mapua. However, Tuts had to make sure he nailed his run to stay ahead of his friend Corey Muir who produced some slick manoeuvres, including a buttercup, to finish second in the senior scooter. Nikita Turu also impressed, recording his second win of the tour in the junior scooter.
Brothers Alex and Sam Moreu finished first and second respectively in the junior skate with older brother Tom third in the senior skate section. However, the tour attracted skaters and rider of all ages and abilities with the youngest rider, Mapua five-year-old Manaia Roebuck-Danks competing in the junior scooter. Tharin Cox won the senior skate, Tom Bassett won the senior and veteran BMX and Blake Eden and Mita Timpson were first equal in the vet-
eran scooter. One of the organisers, Sport Tasman’s Haidee van Zoelen says about 180 competitors and spectators were at the Mapua Skatepark on Monday. “It is proving to be a great community event with people of all ages turning up to enjoy the displays,” she says. The tour continues in Tapawera on Wednesday, Brightwater on January 18 and Richmond on January 21 - it is sponsored by Cheapskates and Village Cycles.

Norovirus at the lake: The Department of Conservation was warning trampers to avoid the Travers-Sabine circuit in the Nelson Lakes National Park because of a suspected norovirus outbreak last week. DOC Nelson Lakes Operations Manager John Wotherspoon says since the start of the year they have identified 34 people from the track suffering vomiting and diarrhoea. Although there have been no reports of illness in other parts of the National Park, it is possible that the gastro bug has spread to huts in the nearby D’Urville and Matakitaki Valleys. “We are working closely with the Nelson DHB Health Protection officer who believes it is highly likely to be norovirus. “While it is not practical to close the circuit, we are now advising people to stay away from the area for at least a week to try and limit the outbreak. If they do enter they are advised to tent camp away from the huts and bury their toilet wastes at least 10m from the track and away from waterways. Cleaning crews have been sent in to thoroughly disinfect the huts and bleach was placed into the huts over the weekend. John says they will continue to monitor the situation and will step up their re-

Video of the week: Hair-raising footage has emerged on Facebook of a car weaving down a rural highway on the wrong side of the road. The brief video, which was posted on New Year’s Day, shows the sedan fishtailing across both sides of a winding stretch of the rain-slicked highway. It was suggested it was taken on the Takaka Hill. in Kahurangi National Park, after an emergency beacon was activated. The crew found a 31-year-old Nelson woman who had injured her leg while descending a steep ridge track above Granity Creek. She was unable to walk, and given the remote location and lack of phone coverage, other members of the group had activated the beacon. The helicopter’s on-board intensive care paramedic was dropped near the woman, who was assessed and stabilised before being winched onto the helicopter with the paramedic. She was then flown to Nelson Hospital.

Motorcycle show fills hall with classics
Nelson Classic and Vintage Motorcycle Club member John Shand with his Burt Munro modified 1960 Harley Davidson KR750TT at the club’s annual show last weekend. The show was held at the Stoke Memorial Hall and attrached around 1000 people. Photo: Brittany Spencer.
Brittany Spencer The hum of classic motorcycles could be heard outside the Stoke Memorial Hall all weekend with the Nelson Classic and Vintage Motorcycle Club’s annual show drawing quite a crowd. From Triumphs to BSAs, Ducatis to Indians and the Harley-Davidsons of yesteryear, 77 motorcycles filled the hall in a display designed by Mapua’s “Sir” Greg Olsen. Show organiser Ian Goaten says the weekend was the perfect opportunity for members to show off their engines and people streamed through the doors to take photos and look at all the different makes and models. “We had quite a variety of bikes on show and everyone loved the display, we would’ve had around 1000 people through the doors over the weekend, it was great.” Former New Zealand Classic Motorcycles Museum manager John Shand had three motorcycles on show, one of which was a small piece of New Zealand racing history. John’s 1960 Harley Davidson KR750TT once belonged to the workmate of Burt Munro and the racing bike has the modifications made famous by the kiwi land speed legend all over it. “I’ve got a photo from the 1960s when they raced it at 120mph which was quite bloody quick back then and the bike has all the modifications.” The bike was number 15 of 17 built in 1960 for racing purposes and has prompted John to make and also buy two other similar motorcycles. “Being manager at the museum, you get a lot of contacts for finding bikes and parts so I went from having no Harleys a year ago, and I’ve got three of the bloody things.” John says he misses having the museum open in Nelson. “It’s a real pity it’s gone but I’ll keep tinkering away and playing with these motorbikes, they’re so rich in history and it really makes you proud to own them.’ Club member Bevan Eyles was given the ‘Best of Show’ motorcycle trophy for his Sunbeam motorcycle and side-chair.

Stories of arguments, beer bottles and family Brittany Spencer Prime Minister Bill English spent his honeymoon there and Nick Smith sank a canoe in the pond during the children’s programme, but Evelyn Dalzell’s memories of family holidays, arguments and beer bottles topped them all. On Friday, the Tahunanui Beach Kiwi Holiday Park and Motel celebrated its 90th birthday, hosting a party and several competitions to mark the milestone. Originally from the West Coast, Nelson woman Evelyn Dalzell took out the ‘Best Story’ competition after writing down tales of travelling up to Tahunanui for a month-long family holiday each summer. Enitled ‘The Annual Holiday Argument’, Evelyn’s story begins in the 1940s with her and her younger brother Robert lying in bed listening to their parents ar-

gue about what to pack into the trailer. “There was never enough room to put everything in the trailer so Dad would always say, ‘Jesus bloody Christ, Ag, where am I going to put that?’,” says Evelyn. “We’d leave a couple of things behind on his insistence and, of course, we needed them as soon as we arrived. Dad never lived it down, we always had three or four of the same thing at home because Mum had to go out to Nelson and buy more after Dad insisted we leave it at home.” Evelyn says her family stayed at the same campsite every year, along with many other families who became life-long friends. “It was the highlight of our year because we’d met people the year before and half of our street came back each year, so we’d gather together and go swimming, fishing, and head up the Aniseed Valley together.” Evelyn also remembers scampering around the holiday park like mice with her brother at first light, collecting all the bottles from the previous night’s drinking sessions and stacking them into the trailer to earn pocket money. “When the trailer was full, Dad would take them to where you sell bottles and cash them in. We
Hello Readers, Christmas and New year is now behind us, I hope that you have all been able to have time with family and friends. I have had buyers looking at property over the holiday period and I have several property appraisals to complete this week so the indication is that there are plenty of buyers looking for property and people wanting to sell. Bayleys is a very strong and well recognized brand and attracts buyers from all over the globe, we have buyers asking us to source all types and price ranges of property. Thinking of selling soon or in the future, you are welcome to contact me, I may know someone who could have interest in your property and be prepared to buy on your terms. Your call will be kept totally confidential, just make sure to ask for me, Lydia Heyward 0274 328 532.

My brother to this day insists that he did the work and I got most of the money.” With its running gags, funny moments and the honesty of a child’s perspective, Evelyn says she loved writing the story for the Collective Memories Competition.
“I could’ve kept writing for a week, I can’t help thinking that it’s the best place to spend your childhood.” Tahunanui Beach Kiwi Holiday Park and Motel general manager, Marcel Fekkes, says Evelyn’s story is just one of many submitted to the competition. “Ninety years is pretty impressive when you look at all the people
who have stayed with us over that time and we were overwhelmed by all the great stories and photographs people submitted. “Now we’re just looking forward to making it to 100 years and all the changes that will come in the next ten years.” To read Evelyn’s story or view other entries, visit www.collectiveholidaymemories.nz
WANTED I have cash buyers wanting a large lifestyle property with a three plus bedrooms home and some nice grazing. Delayed possession is fine. They would consider building. A good sized development farm property suitable to fattening, any area considered. A buyer for an award winning West Coast dairy farm. These vendors may consider a Nelson dairy farm as a part payment.

Richmond artist Averill Moore will be amongst those showing their artworks at the Art Group Nelson Exhibition. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
For over 30 years Art Group Nelson’s annual exhibition in Queens Gardens has been showcasing the artistic talents of locals. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or you simply want a day out in beautiful sunny Nelson, Art Group Nelson welcomes everyone to come and explore pieces from over 50 exhibitors. The exhibition features a range of artistic styles including mixed media, oil and acrylic painting and mosaic, with all pieces original and for sale. Among those who will be exhibiting this weekend is Averill Moore, who has taken inspiration for her paintings from an enviable amount of overseas travel. “I was never artistic at school, I always wanted to be but I wasn’t,” says Averill. “I used to work at Lands and Survey and we got a Christmas card from DOC one time, it was a simple drawing of mountains and a river and I said to my colleague, “wow after we’ve used the Christmas cards I want to keep that one.” I just did a pencil sketch of it and it turned out reasonably good and

Miss Kaiteriteri 1970: Lovely story, Denise.. I well remember this and you winning. Still so beautiful. Heather Kelling. Loved the Photo News.Have every one that was printed so great to read your story. Pam Eddy. My mum has all the old Photo News.. Great reading even now. Karina Tasker. Would you like to see the All Blacks playing in Nelson? Absolutely! Pip Scott. Yes, definitely. Nick Reid. I'd go for that. Is Trafalgar Park capable? Dennis Gibbs. Only if they build a new stadium at Saxton Field! Rob James.
[Leave the rugby stadium in town]. People go on about how great Wellington's Cake Tin is, how the trains drop you off right there. Well "right there" happens to be the same distance as the church steps at the top of Trafalgar St to Trafalgar Park. Now do a radius of that around Trafalgar Park. Easy parking and access for everybody. And, here's where it gets good. I'll use the Cake Tin as another example (as
it's rated so highly because of proximity to town and transport), all of Nelson's bars are closer to Trafalger Park than the very first bar after walking out of the Cake Tin. Rugby equals beers, that leads to more beers, especially night games. I for one aren't fizzing about walking down Main Rd Stoke to the Turf after a game. And Nelson's piss arse amount of buses won't fix that problem. Yip, sure a few thousand at the cricket works, but as far as an event's pre and post match get togethers go, it's in a poop location. Mike Mead. Go for it. Bring the AB's back to it's grass roots. Marley Mcleay.
Get a decent rugby ground at Saxton and it will happen. Sharon Johns. By-law to move Hone? That's not fair. Poor Hone, and what are we going to do for fun outside Farmers store of perpetual boredom. John Gray. Political correctness running riot. If he did that in the USA they would just put some bullet holes in him, end of story. Nick Mather. About bloody time. Imagine if all Nelson ratepayers hung their washing up in Trafalgar St. Jo Mumm. Similar towns such as Napier etc have such by-laws already,

Direct Cremation
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz facebook.com/waimeaweekly www.nelsonlive.co.nz surely if the NCC CEO got on the phone they could "borrow " a readymade, tested by-law and have it underway almost immediately. Or will they try to "reinvent the wheel" by wasting a few more thousands of our money on lawyers to write one up for them. Ash Wells.
Simply straight to the crematorium
The more people make a big song and dance about this guy the more his head grows and he's getting the attention he wants. The more you ignore it the more it might just go away. Yeah, he's not friendly and very opinionated, but at the end of the day look at what you have in front of you compared to him....it's Christmas, be happy!!! Rant over!! Paula Jane Campbell.
With respect and care
Bludgers are a nuisance to society, he's not homeless nor has he the right to hold our town to ransom, he's not Hone, he is Lewis. He is not the wizard but is very crafty indeed. Why feel sorry for someone who was cruel to his animals. Why should he be allowed to carry on like this, if he was black would he be allowed to act this way, I say no. Move him out of our beautiful town and give back the centre he is turning into trash with his so called boxes of protest. Kellie Eric Wickham.

Waimea College nets more hockey honours Simon Bloomberg Waimea College’s hockey programme continued to produce top international talent with Hugh Hendrickson becoming the college’s third player to represent New Zealand last year. The college’s former hockey stars already had an amazing year with Anita McLaren and Kelsey Smith playing for the Black Sticks at the Rio Olympics. And that success continued last month when Hugh, 19, played for the New Zealand Under-21 team that finished ninth at the Junior World Cup in India. The Canterbury University engineering student, who now plays for the Southern United men’s team in the Christchurch club competition and the Canterbury Beavers (Canterbury B) at representative level, says the World Cup was a real highlight. Chisnall third at Royal Melbourne Jacob Page Greenacres golfer Ryan Chisnall has started 2017 in strong fashion with a third place finish at the Australian Master of the Amateurs event at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Ryan shot a three under par 69 to finish in third five shots off the winner. He also teamed up with fellow Kiwi Dan Hillier to claim the world team’s title. “It really was a patience game out there,”
Ryan says. “The greens were so firm... It was like playing on concrete, trying to get the ball to stop and spin when all it wanted to do was bounce made the greens very hard. The young golfer, who was looking to turn professional early this year, has decided to hold off on the move and that decision looks to be paying dividends already. “It was a hard decision but I want to be in the best possible position to turn pro. I looked
at things and felt that I still had more that I could achieve at the amateur level.” He says the Asia-Pacific Championships, which will be held in New Zealand and another potential go at the Eisenhower Trophy events were both incentives to carry on. “I know I could make money now but I think if I hold off on the decision for another couple of years then I’ll be in a much stronger position to make the most of it.”

“Because it gets washed regularly, it makes it quite consistent for play.” At the end of the month, Volleyball Nelson Bays will welcome Adelaide-based coach David Eldridge, who has won several Australian national titles over more than two decades in the sport.
David will be a key part of the Nelson development and extension programmes. Nelson players are also preparing for the New Zealand AgeGroup Championships and New Zealand Secondary School Championships which will be held later this summer in Tauranga.

The team beat Auckland B 6-1 and Tarawhiti 8-0 on day one before beating Hutt Valley 9-1 and losing to Wellington 3-2 and Hawkes Bay 2-1 in a tie-breaker on “an extremely tough second day”.
The Upper South Island under-19 softball team that finished fourth at the national tournament in Hastings last week. Upper South Island beat North Harbour 5-0 and lost to Canterbury 4-2 on day three before defeating North Harbour 5-4 and Canterbury 7-6 in 10 innings in the play-offs on day four. Nigel says the team’s pitchers,
Riley and Josh, performed well with Riley ending the tournament with the top stats and Josh making the Tournament Rest Team. First base Mardi was also outstanding making the Tourna-
