Dam vote sends a message Simon Bloomberg

Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne believes the results of Saturday’s local government election have underlined the need for council to develop “an effective and fair” funding model for the Lee Valley Dam. Richard was re-elected as mayor

for a fourth term after receiving 6787 votes in Saturday’s local government election. However, it was not a clear-cut victory with Kit Maling receiving 5736 votes and Maxwell Clark 5101 and Richard concedes those results need to be taken on board by the council. “I think I won because people feel

the council is doing quite a good job and that I have done quite a good job too. But it doesn’t surprise me with Max because he was standing on the anti-dam ticket and I know that was the biggest issue in our election. “It’s also the biggest issue for us going forward. There is significant concern about the funding

of the dam and that is quite reflective in the results. “Council will need to find an effective and fair funding model for the dam and work through all the issues before going out to public consultation in just under a year.” Richard says he will also be committed to retaining council’s fo-

Locals take on mud in BraveHeart Challenge Jessie Johnston Sunday’s BraveHeart Challenge wasn’t for the faint hearted thanks to around five kilometres of mud, water, steep banks and purpose built obstacles. Mike Gane is the man behind the obstacle race, aiming to provide a fun and challenging event for all ages from children and fun runners, through to competitive athletes. The BraveHeart Challenge was held for the first time last year, with this year’s event taking place on farmland up Wakefield’s 88 Valley. “It just seemed like a quirky idea and it’s all about the grin factor. I like events that have a big grin factor,” says Mike.

Obstacle courses have become popular around the world, Mike taking inspiration for his from the film Braveheart. “I just like the concept of the film and just like them challenging the English, here people are challenging themselves,” says Mike. The event even had a piper who signalled the start of the adults race. While children ran a shortened version of the obstacle course, adults had a choice of one or two laps of the full course. In the elite - two lap section, Carl Smith finished in first place with a time of 45 minutes, 53 seconds, followed by Nathan Dahlberg with 47 minutes, 44 seconds. Over 70 people took part in the BraveHeart Challenge.

“I didn’t vote, I just forgot. I’ve got mixed feelings on results, mainly regarding the mayor.”

“The problem I always have is I don’t know who these people are or what their key policies are. They seem like old school people and a bit disconnected to what’s really going on.”

“I did vote. It’s a decision of the public, they’ve voted, I don’t know what the percentage was but certainly I feel that it’s more of the same and it didn’t go my way.”

“I’m reasonably happy, it went the way I wanted it to go, sort of. I think this is his fourth term so hopefully it will get better, that’s my thought.”

We have committee members performing administration duties so the groups have a contact and Marty is so passionate about the job he is helping out even though we can’t pay him.” Glenys has tried to find out why the government funding hasn’t come through but says “nobody seems to know”. She says Neighbourhood Support New Zealand has not received the government funding for distribution to the regional groups but that’s all she has

found out. Neighbourhood Support New Zealand manager Kelsey Scarr says the government funding was previously distributed by the Ministry of Justice but that had changed. Kelsey says she can’t comment about the change but confirmed that “funding will be coming”. However, that may be too late for Marty who says he is “massively disappointed” about the situation because he is passionate about Neighbourhood Support Waimea. Marty says he is happy to help out on a voluntary basis but needs to find another job - he works for Neighbourhood Support for two days a week.

Neighbourhood Support Waimea is desperately seeking donations and sponsors to keep its co-ordinator Marty Price employed after its government funding stopped unexpectedly. Marty has helped increase the number of street groups around the Waimea district from 25 to 148 since he started working for the Richmondbased group in 2012. However, he is being forced to go on unpaid leave from the end of this week after “a change in government funding” left the Waimea group out of pocket. Although Neighbourhood Support Waimea chairperson Glenys Della Bosca says they are determined to keep the group going, the loss of Marty is a blow. She says the group is seeking alternative funding to try and keep Marty employed until the issue with the government funding is resolved. “We are pursuing every source of funding we can and we have just had a verbal agreement from Nelson Alarms for a sponsorship which is great but it’s nowhere near enough,” Glenys says. “We have other

Nelson Pine Industries backs local bowls Simon Bloomberg

Senior reporter Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Bowls Nelson received a significant vote of confidence last Tuesday when it was announced that it will be sponsored by Nelson Pine Industries for the next three years. The announcement completed a big week for Bowls Nelson after five of its players were named in the 10-player team for the world championships in Christchurch from November 29 to December 11. Although the sport is already in top shape in Nelson, national coach Dave Edwards says the Nelson Pine Industries sponsorship will "help the Nelson production line going". "It's a major boost for the sport here," Dave says. "Nelson Pine is a great sponsor of sport in Nelson and Bowls Nelson is fortunate to have them on board." Nelson Pine Industries managing director Murray Sturgeon says they are pleased to be supporting a sport that has such high levels of participation and achievement in Nelson. He says sponsoring Bowls Nelson will ensure that their support will benefit all 13 bowling clubs and their players in the Nelson-Tasman region. "We have sponsored various clubs over the years but, on this occasion, we are sponsoring Bowls Nelson which covers all the clubs," Murray says.

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Bowls Nelson board member Errol Beattie says they are delighted to secure the "significant" sponsorship which will be used to fund the men's and women's representative teams. "Nelson Pine Industries is a very community-oriented business and is very heavily involved

with sponsoring many sports and community organisation in the Nelson region, " Errol says. "Bowls Nelson is thrilled to have joined that list." Errol says the funding will help the men's and women's teams maintain the momentum they have gained over the last five

years. The teams have an outstanding record at national inter-centre level with the women winning in 2012 and 2014 and finishing second in 2013, 2015, 2016, and the men winning twice in the last five years. "For the size of our centre, that's a mighty achievement," Errol says.

The Nelson bowlers named in the New Zealand team for the world champs are Jo Edwards, Val Smith, Kirsten Edwards, Shannon McIlroy and Ali Forsyth. Jo and Val will surpass 500 international caps during the champs, with Val presently on 493 and Val on 485.

Malone given keys to city

Nelson Paralympic double gold medallist Liam Malone is flocked by fans wanting autographs during a Civic Ceremony at the Church Steps on Saturday. Photo: Evan Barnes/ Shuttersport.

Nelson’s Paralympic sprinting sensation Liam Malone is getting plenty of practice at flashing his world-renowned smile. Prior to his civic reception at the Cawthron Steps on Saturday, plans were in place for him to spend 15 minutes after the ceremony “roaming the streets and signing autographs”. An hour after the ceremony finished he had only just made it down the steps, after convincing well-wishers he’d continue to sign autographs and take selfies once he was down there. The double gold and one silver medal winner signed everything from t-shirts, forearms, backpacks, lunch boxes and even the cameras people asked him to pose for a photo in front of. More than 1000 people had earlier come to see him honoured for his efforts in Rio and in true Liam Malone style his acceptance speech was off the cuff and from the heart. He thanked Nelsonians for their financial contributions to his blades. No other region gave him more of a financial backing three years ago when he was trying to turn his sprinting dream into a reality. Men, women and children came up to him and used words like legend, champion, inspiration and role model. Many asked him to keep racing and Liam suggested he planned to. “I’m just filled with gratitude for people’s support. “I enjoy the process more than the outcome, but this is a great outcome but it doesn’t change anything for me. “I’m a lover of hard work and hustle, and come March I’m going to make everyone look like they’re on Antiques Roadshow when I smoke able-bodied athletes at the nationals, so they better be ready.” Liam now switches his focus back to his university studies but plans to keep training to try to beat the New Zealand 400m record sometime in the summer.

The hailstorm hit around 2pm and stretched from Westdale Rd around to Gardner Valley Road, centering in Mapua with the stones described as “bigger than your average hail” by Alberta’s Mapua barista, James Ingelbrecht. “The thunder and lightning hit quickly and then all of a sudden we had a crazy amount of hail almost being driven sideways.” Local business owner Greg Winn was driving along the highway when it hit and says the road was extremely slippery. “Traffic was at crawling speed, people were pulling over covered in what looked like snow and

Council buys $1.28m port site: Nelson City Council has confirmed its purchase of a $1.28m property in Port Nelson. The Totally Boating property is adjacent to council land and is currently used for boat storage, however, the council will now incorporate it into the marina strategy. Earlier this year, council identified a need to increase space available within the marina to cater for a range of activities including training, changing facilities and storage of equipment. Council hopes the Totally Boating site will provide the extra space needed, and increase the flexibility of the area for future marina development.

Big (donation) is good Simon Bloomberg Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge received a ‘lucky’ donation last week after the winner of a competition at Mitre 10 Mega Nelson decided to give his prize away to people “who need it more than me”. Alistair Forde won $1500 last week in a Mitre 10 Mega Nelson promotion after purchasing some outdoor furniture during the store’s three-day Outdoor Furniture Expo. He put his docket in the draw for the competition and last Monday got a call from Mitre 10 saying he had won his money back. “I almost thought it was someone playing a hoax because I never win anything,” Alistair says. “I was lucky to win this too, because I wasn’t going to put my docket in the bucket - I only did it because my wife told me to do it.” But instead of pocketing the $1500 prize, Alistair decided to give it away. He donated half to the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge and the other half to a family member “who needs it more than me”. “The women and children who are affected by their social con-

Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge manager Katie O’Donnell says they were delighted to get Alistair’s donation last week. The refuge is mostly funded by the Ministry of Social Development but needs additional income to keep operating, so donations are al-

ways welcomed. “Those kind of generous donations don’t just keep us going, they gladden our hearts as well,” Katie says. “It makes us feel that what we do is worthwhile and that people notice.” Alistair is also hoping that after his big win, his wife Julie won’t be so opposed to him going shopping for man-things at Mi-

tre 10. “I love shopping there,” he says. “I’m always sneaking down there to buy stuff and my wife keeps telling me off.” Mitre 10 Mega Nelson marketing manager, Murray Leaning, says they run the Outdoor Furniture Expo competition every year and this year “we got absolutely slammed” with entries.

Keeping kids safe A pilot event run by community safety agencies will this month give hundreds of Tasman schoolchildren confidence and life skills in order to help them stay safe in a range of real-life scenarios. Four hundred and fifty year 5 and 6 children from Appleby, Wakefield, Ranzau, Hope, Brightwater and Richmond schools will take part in Clued Up Kids from October 1721. The multi-agency programme is modelled on an award-winning initiative that has dramatically reduced injuries to young people in Marlborough. In the first five years of Marlborough’s event from 2006 to 2011, medical treatment claims for injuries to Marlborough youth aged 1018 dropped by 42.3 per cent. That compared with a national reduction of 3.4 per cent. Tasman District Council road safety co-ordinator Krista Hobday says if the pilot is successful here, agencies would hope to see a similar reduction in injuries to young people over time. “By getting a group of different agencies together to teach children practical safety skills we hope to give them the tools to keep themselves safe in a variety of real-life situations,” Krista says.

Five Waimea College students will have their problem-solving and presentation skills tested when they contest the annual Junior Physicists’ tournament in Australia starting on Friday. Teacher Drew McGlashen will be taking students Holly Sturrock, Britney Kerr, Jamie Simonsen, Mac Karalus and Bronte Hall to the tournament at the All Saints Anglican School on the Gold Coast. Drew says the students have each been given a problem to research and will present their solution to a panel of judges and their peers from another school. “All the schools get the same five problems and the students get 10 minutes to present their solution,” Drew says. “They get scored three points for the physics, one point for presentation and one point for their reporting. “The problems are very unique so the students have to come up with original solutions. They can’t find

the answers on-line.” Drew says each student will also be scored on how well they judge and critique a presentation from another school. After the students have completed their presentations, the schools will be ranked for a day of finals on Monday. Although the problems are unique, team captain Holly says they know what to expect at the competition after four of the team competed last year when it was held in Wellington. “We finished fifth out of 12 teams but we were the youngest team there so we’ll be more experienced this year,” Holly says. “It’s going to be a pretty intense few days.” Holly says the team has been preparing for the tournament since the end of term one, spending every Friday after school and “a couple of days in the holidays” researching their problems. They have also been fund-raising to help cover the costs of the trip and have been sponsored by Cleanlink and Richmond Roast House and Cafe. Anyone who would like to help sponsor the team can contact Waimea College.

Sun rises over walk for well-being The combination of a beautiful sunrise and over 250 people smiling and wearing yellow, made Saturday’s Sunrise walk for Wellbeing a memorable event. Starting in the dark at 6am, a mass of locals walked around the 6km airport perimeter to promote well-being and raise awareness of mental illnesses. People of all ages and stages joined in, starting conversations about mental illness; some were doing it for themselves

and others did it for family and friends suffering through mental illness. Signs along the track suggested ways to help those affected, and the sunrise, live music, muesli and hot drinks greeted walkers as they finished the course. One of the event organisers, Pete de Jong, says they are very happy with how it went. “We couldn’t fault the morning, the weather played it’s part with a great sunrise.” For a video of the walk, visit nelsonlive.co.nz

Just a thought... The hard thing about getting older is watching people getting sick and dying. We say lots of goodbyes. Some of us are experienced funeral attenders. One of our grandsons recently attended his great-grandfather’s funeral. For a while there, he was fixated on death, even choosing the family member who was probably next on the list. What an honour to be that person! Someone reminded me today that death has 100 per cent suc-

Don Rodrigo Sourdough Bakery is celebrating its first anniversary in the Richmond Mall, the latest chapter in a whirlwind story for owners Katrin Hiller and Rodrigo Ardiles. Four years ago the business took its first steps, producing South American inspired pies for market sale, while selling their own bread at the end of Neudorf Rd in an honesty box. “We wanted to provide something healthy for our children and people who tried it said it was very nice, so we started selling it,” says Rodrigo. “We wanted to share it. I think it’s very sad that we are losing these old trades. We had an honesty box and a sign that said if people didn’t have the money, to still have their bread and pay later. A lot of people still remember us for that.” When demand for their bread outgrew a roadside stall they introduced it to the Motueka Market, the Nelson Saturday Market and Nelson

Bakery owners Rodrigo Ardiles and Katrin Hiller, who started selling their products at markets and through an honesty box, are proud to celebrate one year in their Richmond retail shop.

This kept them busy until once again demand, combined with a longstanding wish, saw them establish their first retail shop in Richmond Mall. “It’s a very central place and Richmond doesn’t have a market, plus, it was an area we didn’t really have our foot in,” says Katrin. “The mall really is the Richmond market

place and I do feel we did it because demand was growing. We were getting so busy at the markets that we were totally confident the community wanted a retail shop.” So what is it that makes Don Rodrigo Sourdough Bakery bread such a favourite? All of their bread products have a sourdough starter and unlike most of the commercial products, their bakery goods are

free from commercial yeast, additives and chemical improvers. “There’s a big trend of quitting gluten and quitting anything that has wheat in it,” says Rodrigo. “I believe the main issue with bread nowadays is preservatives though, and the use of commercial yeast. Our bread is fermented over 12 hours which makes gluten easier to digest and we don’t use any sort of preservative.” They are also passionate about the traditional methods and teach their bakers everything they know about the ways of artisan baking. “When you have a bakery like this, you have to have a lot of people to help run it,” says Rodrigo. “I have people who only take care of the sourdough, I have people who just shape the bread, people who just do the deliveries and people who solely focus on customer service. We try to provide everyone with the proper training so they can be excellent in what they do.” Their bread is now being sold at Fresh Choice in Nelson. “One of the bakers there told me that a man around 70 years old came in and said that our bread tasted like the bread that he used to eat when he was a kid, and hearing that is pretty cool,” says Rodrigo. “It’s not that long ago that people started using commercial yeast so there are generations around who remember traditional bread,” says Katrin. All of Don Rodrigo Sourdough Bakery products are made with a purpose, which is why they are now making tin loaves for sandwich bread for kid’s lunches; their doughnuts were created as a $2 treat, “because everyone has $2 in their pocket,” while their pesto sticks aim to attract attention in a crowded Saturday market. Rodrigo believes that 30 per cent of their success comes from their outstanding products, the rest is down to customer service and their openness about what they do. That’s why they’re starting off their second year with a new website offering an online ordering option, as well

as accommodating a blog and videos so that people can view recipes and see how the team creates their artisan items. Rodrigo and Katrin are looking at offering new ranges including packaged bread, allowing favourite products to be kept longer in the fridge, or freezer thanks to special packaging. A family orientated range will feature convenient forms of cheaper priced bread, including XL tin loafs and ciabatta rolls. For Rodrigo and Katrin, the aim always has been and will continue to be about feeding New Zealand families. “It’s not an idea from overseas, this is New Zealand sourdough bread and my dream is for this to become a staple food in family homes,” says Rodrigo. Come and visit them at their Richmond Mall store, or enjoy their bread as you wander around the Nelson and Motueka markets.

Congratulations to Rodrigo and the team at

pecially over the heat of the sumer. There has been a lot of growth this class not only here in Nelson t South Island wide. The high rsepower machines are big, not ly here but in Australia and the SA, so we expect to see some in-

ternational drivers here to compete alongside a multitude of top Kiwis. Sprintcars are 900hp of action and on a small dirt oval like ours there will be entertainment for young and old. We are fortunate to be hosting the 75th anniversary of the New Zealand Midget championship and the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway is expecting some of the biggest names in Midget car racing to come together on the 27th and 28th of January to win what is the oldest championship in New Zealand speedway. Local hopes could rest with Nevil (The Bullet) Basalaj who has put a lot of effort into his car preparation in the off season and has been 3NZ once and 2NZ twice in his career so he will be dead keen to go one better on his home track. Another mainlander to watch will be Dave Kerr from Christchurch who has no less

than seven South Island titles to his name and a 3NZ just two seasons ago. It will take a mighty effort to beat some of big name North Island drivers however. The Three Quarter Midget class (or TQ’s as they are known) are the real growth class here in Nelson this season with over a half dozen new drivers and cars joining in on the action that should continue on from last season. This season the class gets to host the South Island championship on the 25th February. The last few years this championship has been dominated by the super smooth Jeremy Webb from Christchurch but with him buying a Midget it is unclear if he will contest this event. He is however keeping his TQ as well. There are many Nelsonian’s that could really push for this title including the little lady from Foxhill Alicia McLauchlan who has really impressed since

way is renowned for. The club are continuing two of last season’s popular new promotions being the two days of stockcar team’s racing action with the Nelson Automotive Solutions Stockcar Teams Brawl backed up by a revamped Vertex Super Cup on the same weekend. The club is working hard on securing at least two North Island teams to attend this meeting as we try to grow it into one of the premier stockcar teams deals in the South Island. After the success of the Hanmer Holiday Homes South Island Superstock series last season the Nelson Speedway Association has, this time around, bought two rounds. One on the 5th November and the other on the 11th of February. A few years back the Modified class was a big deal here in Nelson so we have invited that class back here to shift some Moutere clay on the 11th February as well as inviting the Modified Sprints here on the 7th January to show us how they do it in the dirt. All in all, another very busy and “ENTERTAINING” season lays ahead here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway as we bring it to you the only way we know how and that’s “Doing It In The Dirt”. As we move to keep our drivers, members and spectators safe we have had some concerns with cars, trucks and trailers holding up traffic on Lansdowne Rd, so we have decided that from the start of the season all cars arriving at the track are to enter on the Lower Queen St entrance. This should ease traffic congestion on Lansdowne Rd which is an open road. Also, there will be no parking outside our boundaries as it restricts the flow of traffic as well. This will be strictly enforced by the Nelson Speedway Association as it has been identified as a major hazard by both the club, the local neighbours and the Tasman District Council. A traffic management plan will be put in place to assist with this and we thank you for your cooperation. Visit our website at www.nelsonspeedway.co.nz

The 18-year old Waimea College standout also won gold medals in the 17 to 18 year age group for the 50m and 200m breaststroke and a silver in the 400m individual medley. Caitlin set new Nelson-Marlborough open records in three events and an age group record in another.

Tasman rising star Piper Riley, 13, also had an outstanding week in Auckland, bringing home age group gold medals in the 200m and 400m freestyle for 13-year-old girls. Talya Harwood, 17, of Waimea College collected age group silver medals in the 400m and 800m freestyle and was a respectable fifth in the open 400m freestyle, breaking her own Nelson-Marlborough open record in the process. Tasman’s Bendi Kepess, 13, also had an excellent meet, getting big personal bests including nearly 10 seconds off his time in the 200m butterfly, in

which he won bronze in his age group. Tasman’s Sam McKenzie, 17, won silver in the 50m free for 17 to 18-year-old boys, finishing just 0.02sec behind the winner. Overcoming disabilities with Christian support In Pinnacle House an inspiring concept has become a functioning reality, where hands reach out to those in the community who need special support.

The charitable trust, which relies on the enthusiasm and dedication of volunteers, was created eight years ago to provide a day care service for those who have left school without the skills needed for full time employment. It arranges programmes tailored to meet individual needs in a safe and dignified environment, and to break down barriers, says Linda Gill, one of six trustees. There are currently 16 young participants, with 12 staff plus volunteers, who recognise that as fortunate members of society they want to help others who are more vulnerable. An example was a bright young man with time on his hands before going to university, who helped by supporting a participant’s swimming programme, and also worked at the food bank. “It’s been so eye-opening for me, finding out what life is truly like,” he said. “This experience has given me so much understanding and respect for others.” The focus at Pinnacle House is on an individual’s abilities and aspirations to assist in achieving goals, from a stable and nurturing base that is always nonjudgmental, encouraging and optimistic. Families

are kept fully informed and consulted in a culturally sensitive way. Based at Grace Church in Richmond, it serves young people who have left school without the usual employment options, because of physical and/ or mental disabilities. Apart from the food bank, jobs have been offered at a hospice shop, a florist, an office, a school and a tree nursery. Typically participants become very enthusiastic about these opportunities for social interaction and to contribute to their community in practical ways. Other activities available, all on weekdays, include music, horse riding, scrapbooking, cottage industry, cooking, gymnastics and physiotherapy. Linda Gill says Christian faith is central to everything done at Pinnacle House; days always begin with time for reflection “and the incredible value that each participant brings to the team.” Often walking groups begin their ramble with a Bible story. A not for profit organisation, Pinnacle House receives funding support from the Ministry of Social Development, as well as private donations. The trustees provide skills from diversified backgrounds, among them a farmer, a lawyer and a dentist. The dedicated and energetic team of staff are led by manager Carol Burson and assistant manager Sheryl Waterhouse.

Bennett waiting patiently Simon Bloomberg Nelson cyclist George Bennett may have produced some top results on the world pro tour this season but he isn’t expecting any favours from his Dutch team LottoNL-Jumbo next year. George, who is back in Nelson for some hard-earned R and R, finished seventh on a stage in his first Tour de France before recording a gritty 10th in the Vuelta a Espana in a breakthrough year on the pro tour. He also finished seventh in the Tour of California and 14th in the Criterium du Dauphine, signalling that he is ready to make the step from riding as a domestique, helping team leaders, to a general classification (GC) contender. However, George says he still expects to be riding for the team’s stars next year and will have to wait patiently for a chance to lead his team in a grand tour. “We still have big talents like Robert Gesink and Steve Kruiswijk. Josh Clarkson goes from injured to CD contracted cricket player Jacob Page Nelson all-rounder Josh Clarkson has turned being frustrated by a stress fracture into something positive, and now has a Central Districts contract. Josh suffered a stress fracture in his back during a warm up game for the Under-19 Cricket World Cup and it forced him to play as a batsman only. “I was pretty pissed off, I was ready to try to contribute to the team with both bat and ball. “It affected me mentally, and my batting suffered because I just wasn’t right mentally.” The ACOB all-rounder has been based in Napier during the offseason to get the best medical care during his recovery and rehabilitation. He has also had to change his bowling action. “Changing my action was quite tough because it was the action I’d had for all of my cricket. “I got an ankle injury just from getting used to landing in a new way.” Josh says he feels earning a Central Districts contract alongside Nelson regulars Marty Kain and Greg Hay was acknowledgement of his hard work. “It feels like the hard work has paid off.

Nelson’s Josh Clarkson is the third contracted player from the province for Central Districts this season. Photo: Supplied. “It hasn’t been easy, but I’m very keen to make the most of the opportunity. On his return from injury he believes he will initially be best suited to Twenty20 and 50over cricket.” Josh will be part of Nelson’s Chapple Cup team this weekend and, despite being just 19 years old, he saw himself as someone who would take on a leadership role within the

representative team. “It’s always fun to play for Nelson and I know they will be looking at me to perform strongly and help the team, and I think it’s time I started to take on more of a leadership role at that level.” Nelson made the final of the Central Districts regional competition last year and will be looking to go one better this season.

Early season snapper fishing in Tasman Bay has still been very patchy, with changeable spring weather restricting the number of days suitable for getting out and wetting a line in the last couple of weeks. A couple of nice snapper have been landed recently by Dawnbreakers Fishing Club members near Pepin Island and Hori Bay, although larger snapper seem to have been taken by setlines. Good catches of gurnard continue to be reported from Delaware and Okiwi Bays, and good numbers of kahawai have also been a welcome by-catch in these areas. Several large brown trout have been landed in the lower reaches of the Motueka River in the last two

WEDNESDAY 12 October 2016

Tasman United ready for the big league Tasman United will begin its first ever national football league campaign later this month. Waimea Weekly sports editor Jacob Page spoke with those who made the team a reality. Getting a national league franchise in the Top of the South was only the beginning for those behind the scenes at Tasman United. It’s been a six year journey of meetings and unparalleled youth success which has created a perfect storm to make Tasman United’s case for inclusion in this year’s national league too compelling to ignore. The Nelson-Marlborough Falcons youth team, who played their first season in 2013 with the backing of a private group headed by former Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio, were runners-up in its second year and won it the following year. Last season, Nelson College won the national secondary school crown on home soil, beating talent-identified New Zealand agegroup players and more highlyfancied schools along the way. Nelson Bays Football general manager Clive Beaumont says he first remembered talking to former Nelson Suburbs coach John Slotemaker about a national youth team in 2010. “John came to me and said that our youth players needed more opportunities and a national

youth team would be a way to give young players a pathway.” Clive says he was confident the province could sustain a youth team on “a tight budget”. While Nelson Bays Football’s bid for a stand-alone youth team lost to a rival private bid from former board member Aldo, the province got what it needed, a national presence at a youth level. Nelson College coach and Tasman United assistant, Davor Tavich, led the team to a midtable finish in its first year before an appearance in the decider the following year, Davor says the amount of young talent in the Nelson region helped make the Falcons' rise meteoric. “We had good structures and players with plenty of ability,” Davor says. “It was an exciting time to be involved." Davor stepped aside and Mark Johnston, an overage player the year before, became the coach. They would go one step better in 2015, winning the league. “We knew something special was happening with the start we had that year of eight wins in a row and we wrapped up our conference with a couple of games to spare,” Mark Johnston says. Mark says all the while, the goal was to get a senior team. “That’s what we all wanted and certainly the success of the Falcons helped contribute to what happened last year."

Ermal Hajdari has been one of the best for Tasman United in their early outings. Photo: Chris Symes/Shuttersport. With New Zealand Football expanding the league, Nelson Bays Football put a bid in late last year for one of three new spots. Mark Johnston was one of two people who presented the 170 page document to New Zealand Football. It had been established thanks to a 10-person working panel with the likes of Clive, Mark Johnston and Tasman United chairman Mark Sheehan all involved. “You wouldn’t believe the work that went into that proposal,” Clive says. Everything from financial strategies, sponsorship player recruitment, coaching staff, succession plans, venues, training facilities and even the club colours and

uniform, were discussed. Mark Johnston says he always felt confident. “I thought we presented really well,” he says. “We were very thorough and New Zealand Football didn’t ask too many questions because it was all in the proposal. I was 80-90 per cent confident.” Clive was less sure, the enormity of the outcome was not lost on him. “If we were successful, that’s great, but what would have happened if we weren’t? “We would have totally been left out in the wilderness for two years." In December last year, the news came through that the bid was successful.

Clive got a phone call in his office from New Zealand Football, he then passed it on to Mark Johnston, who was at work, while Mark Sheehan heard the news on the radio and Davor was told the news while in transit in Italy on his way to Croatia. “We got a bottle of champagne and toasted the moment in Italy," Davor says. After a brief celebration, the hard work began once again, with sponsors, player recruitment and coaching teams all sourced. Mark Sheehan says, with a two year licence, Tasman United has a chance to cement themselves as a long term fixture in the national league. While goals for the debut season are realistic - win half the home games, finish as the best debuting franchise and above one of the regular teams - the aspirations years down the track are far greater. Mark Johnston would like to see a home-grown All White in the next five years. With entry to home games at Trafalgar Park free, it’s hoped Nelson will have the biggest home crowds of any franchise. Now, with the hard work done behind the scenes, it's up to the players on the pitch to deliver. Tasman United will play its first game away to Canterbury United on October 23. The first home game will be against Hawkes Bay United on Sunday, November 13, at Trafalgar Park at 2pm.

“Move in when you can still enjoy it.” Life is brighter since Marjorie moved into her spacious serviced apartment at her Summerset retirement village. Marjorie has always lived an active life, yet living in the family home was beginning to feel a little quiet. “My son Graeme was concerned I was rattling around on my own. One day he said ‘Just come down and see the village for yourself.’ And I thought well, I have got nothing to lose.” Since moving into her serviced apartment you’ll find Marjorie zipping around to catch up with friends, taking part in the many activities on offer or reading the newspaper in the sunny library.
