Richmond dentist comes to the rescue
A Richmond dental surgery is helping patients who were in the middle of treatment at the Stoke Dental Centre when it closed earlier this month, but there is unlikely to be any relief for people who made advance payments to the dodgy dentist. Stoke Dental Centre’s owner, Dr Nicolas Smith, closed his surgery on Main Rd Stoke on November 3, after asking the Dental Council to remove his name from the register. The Waimea Weekly also understands the business is being placed in liquidation and that the council had put Nicolas under review in June after receiving complaints about the standard of his care. Nicolas had earlier been convicted of three charges of using a document for pecuniary advantage and one of attempting to obstruct the course of justice in 2001. Graham Leathy, of Richmond Dental Centre, confirmed this week that they had been contacted by “a number of patients” from Stoke Dental Centre and are focusing on ensuring they received a continuation of their
treatment. He says looking after people who had been “in active treatment” at Stoke was a priority. But for one Nelson mother the closure of Stoke Dental Centre has meant more than just a change of dentist. Stacey didn’t want her last name printed, but says she had an automatic payment set up with Stoke Dental Centre and now she is likely to lose $600 in advance payments. Stacey says she called the clinic last week to book an appointment, knowing that she had a credit with the dentist, only to get an answer phone message telling her that the business had closed and referring her to another dentist. “It took me a long time to save and had I not rung my automatic payment would have kept going, no one told me to stop it.” The chief executive of the Dental Council, Marie Warner, says those who are unhappy about owed money should contact the disputes tribunal. Waimea Weekly phoned Nicolas a number of times to try and get comments but didn’t get a reply.

Waimea Village, one year on Andrew Board
It was a chilly Sunday afternoon in September last year when then-Tasman mayoral candidate Kit Maling stood at the front of a packed Blue Herring Lounge, deep in Waimea Village. He wore a tweed coat and shuffled from foot to foot as hundreds of stressed and concerned faces, invariably topped with grey
hair, squeezed past each other and on to chairs that had been set out ready for a big turnout. Battle-hardened by a dozen previous meetings, the residents had hoped for good news but they didn’t expect it. They sat there after a three year fight with the owners of Waimea Village, Michael and Carolyn Wright, over the massive increases to the monthly levy they

paid. They were at the end of their collective wits. It had been emotional and had taken a huge toll on many of them. Kit stood there, after months of work by community leaders and businesses to support the residents, and offered a way out. He would buy the village and turn it over to the residents, with each

“I don’t think it should be classed as neglect, I think it’s up to the individual to make that call. Lots of fads come and go but as long as you have a balanced diet, it is not wrong.”
“Parents like to please their children, but they are not doing this because they are giving their children poison. Sugar drinks are for special occasions only.”
“The word neglect seems a bit harsh and too strong, everything in moderation is okay.”
“No, it shouldn’t be classed as neglect but parents should be aware of what sugar drinks do. Parents need to read what is on food labels, as some parents are giving their children too much sugar.”

Two more roads are planned to be resurfaced by April next year. Kit, who is now the part-time manager of the village, says it just goes to show how the past owners “screwed them over” with the incredibly-high monthly levy payments they imposed on the residents. The village’s Blue Herring Lounge – previously the scene of heated meetings with the past owners – is now a buzzing hive of activity. There are pool nights, fashion shows, performances and its annual garage sale that was held on Saturday. Of the 172 homes in the village 140 are shareholders, and Kit says there is one share attached to each home so there will never be an opportunity for one person to be in control again. Jerry says it’s been a peaceful year. “We’re all so happy. Kit is doing an amazing job and the residents are right behind him and the directors. We can see the improvements in the village and it makes us proud. “Waimea Village is back to being the best place in the world to live.”

For Richmond dog-walkers Deb and Mike Pioch there’s only one thing better than taking pound dogs out for some fresh air – finding them a new home. Deb walked dogs voluntarily in Australia before moving to Nelson and enquired at the Tasman District Council dog pound about doing the same here. She and her husband Mike, who both work part-time, have volunteered numerous hours over the past year, walking and training the dogs from the pound and helping to find them new homes. Not only do they walk the dogs twice a week, they also teach them basic commands and help to find them new homes. “We enjoy walking the dogs, getting out in the fresh air and exercising, it is a place you can go and always be welcomed,” says Deb Some of the dogs that arrive at the pound can be scared of their new environment and it often takes Deb and Mike quite a few visits to build a trusting relationship. “These dogs often have more personality because they have had to look after

It is really rewarding seeing dogs that wouldn’t even come out of their kennel now in good homes,” says Mike. Mike and Deb spend their days off socialising the dogs as much as possible and, when ready, Deb then videos the dogs on the walks and posts on You Tube, in the hope of finding them a new family. “We teach the dogs some social skills and find out what they are like and advertise them to be re-homed on Trade Me and You Tube. which last week released its decision. Tasman’s 2am closure Hospitality New Zealand’s Nelcame into effect with its policy in son branch is “extremely disapDecember last year and Nelson pointed” that its appeal against branch president, Ron Taylor, the Tasman district’s 2am closing says the court’s decision to reject time for bars and restaurants has the appeal is unfair and a blow to the industry. “The appeal has been lost so we are extremely disappointed,” Ron says. “We put up a great case - we spent a year-and-a-half on it and We can’t miss D’s Karaoke a lot of time discussing it this Saturday, so cancel with council so we are not sure what will do next but all your other plans! we are getting our lawyers to look at the decision.”
Ron says the ruling will potentially result in loss of jobs in some of the Tasman district’s “60-plus” bars and could cause a mass exodus of patrons into Nelson. He also says closing bars one hour earlier will have no impact on the incidence of alcohol-related harm recorded in the NelsonTasman region and will unfairly penalise the majority of responsible drinkers. Richmond hotel owner, Tony Crosbie, says one of their members, Leigh Knowles of the Hampden Hotel in Murchison, has said the 2am closing is a disaster for their community. NEWS in brief
ECONOMY STRONG: The Nelson-Tasman economy has shown solid growth over the past year with unemployment falling to 4 per cent, the lowest since June 2009, the latest Nelson Region Economic Development figures show. Tourism international guest nights are up 6.2 per cent in the year to May compared to a year earlier and 503 new residential building permits were issued in the year to May 2014, the highest they have been since August 2011. However, these improvements haven’t flowed through to consumer confidence, with an 18 per cent drop over the last three months in the proportion of households with a positive outlook for the coming year. PLAYCENTRE OPEN DAY: Wakefield Playcentre is holding an open day this Saturday from 9am to 1pm. There will be face painting, a sausage sizzle and farm animals and pets for children to play with and feed. The playcentre is located at 16 Treeton Place, behind the Wakefield School. CANNABIS FOUND GROWING IN HOME: Murchison Police discovered a sophisticated indoor cannabis growing operation while conducting routine inquiries in St Arnaud on Saturday afternoon. After seeing cannabis plants growing inside the house, police searched the property and recovered more than 450 cannabis plants in various stages of maturity. Detective John Nicholls said the property appeared to be well set up with plants growing in several rooms which were fitted with timers, lighting and ventilation systems. The occupier of the property was not home at the time but presented himself to Police the following Monday. A 38 year old St Arnaud man has been charged with offences relating to the find.

the donation “blew them away” but they are now in the planning phase, figuring out what they need for the yacht. “First thing we’re doing is getting it cleaned up, inside and out. The inside of the hull is pretty dirty, it’s had a lot of rain water in it so it’s got tide marks inside.” The wiring will also need to be pulled out and then rewired from scratch, but the project isn’t huge, says Graeme. And with the mast and rigging expected to be up this time next month, it won’t be long before the yacht begins to look the part.

The yacht is a 20 foot Red Wing trailer sailor, that was donated to the Coastguard by the Waimea Weekly newspaper and its sister paper, Nelson Weekly. Waimea College principal, Larry Ching, revealed one of his deepest, darkest secrets to students and staff during an emotional and humorous farewell speech at the school’s senior prizegiving last week. Larry is leaving Waimea College after 12 years as principal and 44 years in schools around the country and last Wednesday he told senior students that “sometimes you can do something incredibly stupid and still come out of it looking good”. He explained that he had learned that lesson in life about 40 years ago when he almost burned down Westland High School but still came out of it looking like a hero. “I was about to leave the school one night when I noticed a flickering light coming from a classroom. I went back and had a look and it was on fire so I phoned the principal which was really silly. “He asked if I had phoned the fire brigade or tried to put it out and I said no. So I hung up and got a fire extinguisher off

the wall and put the fire out. “When the fire brigade arrived they said it looked like the fire had been started by someone putting a cigarette out in the wastepaper basket. I smoked back in those days and it was my cigarette but I have never told anyone that until today. “I was hailed as a hero for saving the school from burning down, but I had started the fire so you can be incredibly stupid and come out of it looking good.” Larry received a standing ovation at the prizegiving. Students also performed a haka in his honour. Waimea’s top academic students were also honoured at the prizegiving, with Florence Wilson being named Dux and Anton Jelinek named as Proxime Accessit. Florence, 17, had earlier won the classical studies, history and English with Shakespeare prizes while Anton won the
chemistry, physics and geography prizes. Florence, who plans to study law and commerce at Otago University next year, says she could not have enjoyed academic success without the support of her parents, Wendy and Thomas, and the teachers at Waimea College. She says the highlights of the school year included performing in the Stage Challenge, house sports day and “seeing my friends every day”. Anton, 18, who is aiming to study engineering at University of Canterbury next year, says his highlight was performing in the school production, Westside Story. “It was amazing see so many people coming together to produce such a professional show,” he says. Joe Robinson won the K Anderson Cup for general excellence for boys, Elora Chang won the Jane Hunt Cup for general excellence for girls and Melanie Westley won the Principal’s Award for Academic Excellence.

Petrol-head heaven at Saxton Stadium The V4 and Rotary South Island Championships were held over the weekend, with a day of drag racing on Saturday and a “show and shine” event at Saxton Stadium on Sunday. One of the biggest automotive and lifestyle shows of its kind in Australasia, the V4 Rotary was automotive heaven for those who went along. Devin Stokes, of Nelson, showed his Mark II Ford Escort at the event and says it was great to be able to have his car on show. He and his brother, Darryl Bunn, fully re-
stored the car, which includes a turbo skyline motor, slowly over a two year period. The influx of car lovers to the region didn’t have much of an impact on the number of tickets issued by police, either. Nelson Bays area commander, Inspector Steve Greally, says specialist road policing staff from Canterbury and Marlborough helped with a sting on vehicles travelling into the area for the event. “I’m very pleased to be in a position to say that, on the whole, the visiting car enthusiasts and locals exercised good judgement on our roads.”

With a successful gala done and dusted, Wakefield School is looking forward to its new food tech class. The gala has been a popular community event for years, with families coming along to enjoy the activities and treat themselves to a delicious picnic dinner. This year, the gala was once again well received and organisers are thrilled with the event. “It was a great success, Wakefield’s a great community and they get in behind things so we had a fabulous evening,” says Wakefield School Principal, Peter Verstappen. The total money brought in by the twilight gala is still waiting to be finalised but it is expected to be around the $25,000 mark, and a much appreciated result for their exciting new venture. “We’ve got a great project this year; we want to

build a food technology kitchen for our students. We’re a school of around 300 and at the moment the only cooking facilities the kids have are in the hall, but that’s a very small and inadequate facility.” The refurbishment of one classroom block has almost started and part of that project will include the food technology space. The total cost of the project is expected to be around $200,000. “It’s really important for kids to learn how to cook, but it’s also in line with where we’re going with our curriculum here at Wakefield School. We’re really pushing out to a curriculum that offers a much wider range of learning experiences. Through cooking you can learn how to read and write, how to do maths and it’s a really engaging activity,” says Peter. With the kitchen expected to be finished next year.

College students off to national singing school Waimea College’s Louise Davis, James Corcraighe and Jillian Maisey have been given the opportunity of a lifetime but now they have to raise the funds to help pay for it. The trio have been invited to attend the prestigious New Zealand Singing School in Napier from January 7-17. They will receive tuition from a number of international performers, including top London-based tenor Keith Lewis, and Louise says she can’t wait. “It will be such a cool opportunity to expand my knowledge and be taught by the best,” she
says. Louise says they were accepted for the school after sending in an application that included a DVD of them singing and their CV. They also had to send a deposit for the school that costs $1500 in addition to their accommodation and travel. Louise says they had a concert at Waimea College on Tuesday and are keen to sing at functions to help raise funds. Anyone interested in booking a performance by the trio can email their teacher, Erica Sim, at e.sim@xtra.co.nz

Local gardens on show for church fundraiser
Spectacular gardens around Richmond and Hope won’t be the only attraction in the Church on the Hill’s garden trail this Saturday. Church on the Hill in Richmond has organised a selection of nine gardens for its third, biannual garden trail which is being held to raise funds to build the church’s new community centre. Although the gardens will be the main attraction on Saturday, organisers are also holding a wedding-themed display featuring 14 wedding gowns worn by brides from around the district from 1947 to 1999. “We have three gowns that were worn by ladies who now in their 90s,” one of the organisers Lorraine Leonards says. “They are all very, very special and I’m sure a lot of people will be interested in seeing them.” Lorraine says the garden trail has been well supported by home owners who will be opening their gardens to the public for the day. She says the organising committee inspected the gardens last November to make sure they were suitable and they were very impressed by their standard. “We selected a range of gardens so that there’s something for everyone. There are some really big ones and some smaller, suburban ones and they all look wonderful - we are very fortunate to have so many people open up their gardens for us.” Lorraine says organising this year’s garden trail has been an emotional journey for the committee after one of their members, Caroline Pitman, recently passed away. “Caroline started the whole thing so we want to make this year’s trail a real tribute to her,” Lorraine says. The garden trail will be held on Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Tickets can be purchased for $10 at the Richmond Mall customer service centre or at Church on the Hill on Saturday from 9am. The wedding display will be open at the church hall from 10am with a donation for entry. It will also include baking, plant and craft stalls and raffles.

Giving sugary drinks to kids neglect? Agree. Funny thing, water out of the tap is free. Dave Trigg. I’ve seen photos on Facebook of children as young as 3 drinking out of a large can of V. That’s neglect. Who in their right mind would give an energy drink to their child..... Babies getting fizzy in their bottles is definitely neglect. Katrina Topp.
PENKETH PROPERTY LAW LIMITED
Giving it out at a kids birthday party as a treat is not neglect, but letting kids drink it every day and thinking its ok, is neglect. Tina Duncan.

I disagree, everything in proportion. My son drinks juice and it has sugar, but he refuses water, so I’m supposed to let him get dehydration instead of giving him a drink of juice? A whole can of fizz or energy drinks should be a no, but classed as neglect is taking it too far. Aleisha Brunell. In the past six months my daughter and I have witnessed mothers giving their very young children coke on three separate occasions. It’s mind-
blowing! Sheree Piesse.
Monkey see, monkey do! I always have bottles and bottles of cold water in the fridge, and it’s a running joke when my kids drink “my” water, they drink so much water, like me! Not neglect when it’s once every now and then. Amiee Baker. I agree. Back when I was bringing up my daughter we didn’t think or realise the damage soft drinks did and consequently my daughter has a mouth full of fillings. My grandies on the other hand have none as my daughter took care not to give them soft drinks. Brenda Kenny. On a regular basis, definitely neglect. One small glass at a birthday party is fine in my opinion. Some juices have more sugar than lemonade, so why it’s seen as a “healthy option” is completely beyond me. Nikole Berkett. Neglect is taking it a bit far, as to say they don’t care or love their child[ren]. I would put it down to just poor parenting choices. Helayna Brennan. Everything in moderation. I am all for sugar-saturated drinks as a treat, but am totally opposed in an everyday environment. Education, as opposed to nanny state compulsion, is a better direction. Peter Snushall.

It is not neglect! Everything in moderation. So I can go to an event and buy alcohol - which is a drug - but not buy an L&P ! Makes no sense to me. Alethea Stove. I agree, if it’s given to them on a regular basis. Xmas and birthday parties is understandable, but if your child can come home from school and have a glass of coke or Fanta then there’s something wrong there. Kids should be having water or milk. I don’t think neglect is the right word to use, though. But, unfortunately, you do see kids going to school with fizzy, and well, that’s a cock-up in the parenting department. Khalarn Olivia Cooper. I agree. Water is better, AND it’s free! My girls will only be having that 3L Just Juice for their birthdays as a treat. I’m hosting Christmas this year, and I will not be supplying fizzy drinks. Jannelle Patterson. I chose not to give my kids juice or fizzy for quite a few years, I believe my eldest was about 7 when she first tried fizzy and she only has it as a treat. They come to me and ask for a drink and I turn them to the water tap!! Juice, I give them as a treat but watered down. I’ve seen parents put coke and juice in baby bottles and put their kids to bed, pathetic but only because they are not educated enough I believe. Sarah Bailey. Property insights Tips for buying your first home Buying your first home is not only very exciting but it can also be quite daunting. Here are a few tips to help first time buyers through the process: Have a clear idea of what sort of home you want - choose the area where you want to live, location of schools and amenities, make a list of essential features, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, size of section etc. There will be some features that will be non-negotiable but be willing to compromise. Do the research - look at as many houses as you can, get a feel for the affordability of your chosen area and build up a database of house prices. Use the internet and real estate website alerts for new properties coming to the market in your price range.

Finances - find out how much money you are able to borrow with a pre-approved indication of finance. It is a good idea to also have an idea of how much a loan will cost you if the interest rates were to rise. Remember to factor in other expenses, such as your solicitor, the cost of a builder’s report, house insurance, rates - all these things add up. Happy House Hunting!

Young kids battle diabetes
Lily Trench was just three years old when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Now seven, the Richmond school girl is one of 25,000 kiwis with the condition. Lily’s mother, Louise Trench, says having a child with diabetes can be very challenging with constant “24-7” monitoring of blood sugar levels. “There is so much work that goes on behind the scenes just to get your child ready for the day, you need to weigh all of their food for every meal and work out how many carbohydrates there are in their food because for every carbohydrate you’ve got to have insulin. Playing sports and birthday parties mean extra monitoring and care while still allowing them their freedom.” But it isn’t just the physical issues, Louise says it also affects children emotionally. “I have to think, is my child crying because her blood sugar levels are low or is there something else wrong? It is especially hard with growing children as their levels of insulin constantly need adjusting, every one centimetre they grow, they need another unit of insulin,” says Louise. Lily has an insulin pump at-

Ruben Mills, also of Richmond, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was just two. He is now 12 years old and says that the worst thing about having diabetes is “having a pump and Mum hassling me about my blood sugar levels”. “Diabetes doesn’t stop me doing anything, but it slows me down sometimes”. Over 225,000 New Zealanders are living with diabetes and of all the people diagnosed,
it is estimated that around 10 per cent have type 1 diabetes. World Diabetes Day will be held this Friday to raise funds and awareness. Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune condition, most often occurs in children aged between seven and 12 years, however it can occur at any age. In conjunction with World Diabetes Day, a ‘Go Blue for Diabetes’ mufti day to raise funds for Diabetes New Zealand Nelson Youth, will be held on Friday November 14. Airport CEO retires on top
Head of the region’s airport, Kaye McNabb, has announced her retirement from the job, ending 11 years in charge. Kaye grew up on a dairy farm in Hokitika, and after leaving school decided to study nursing. Marriage and family ensued and she then found herself as a solo mum with three children, including one who had serious health problems, and facing redundancy in her role at the hospital. Desperate for work, Kaye McNabb outside Nelson Airport, with the Fulton Hogan Airport Personality of The Year she applied for a job as a wages Award she was presented with at the New Zealand Airports Conference. In early 1989, she moved to Nelson and was employed by Port Nelson Ltd in various senior roles, and was appointed to the position of chief executive of Nelson Airport in 2003. “It was a very gutsy decision of the board who appointed me to the position, particularly since I had no aviation experience and didn’t wear trousers. I hope over the years I have justified that decision,” says Kaye. Kaye recognises that it was a chalGlamour Package - only $70 lenge, not only for her but for a lot (Valued at $110) of the people she dealt with within • Full Bodyspray Tan • Fingers or Toes File & Paint the very male-dominated industry. • Eyelash Tint, Eyebrow Tint & Brow Wax & Shape She overcame this by quickly learning the ins and outs of the aviation scene and its politics, as well as enMelanie Johnson suring she was available to listen to issues and opportunities from

the aviators themselves. “I realised pretty quickly that this was the biggest domestic airport, and really the only one of the regions with the resources to take the lead on political issues,” says Kaye. The biggest challenge to the airport itself was that it was almost solely dependent on landing charges. A key focus was getting fairer return on the other aspects of the airport, by developing the property and parking to help smooth out the income streams. Kaye, who was presented with the Fulton Hogan Airport Personality of the Year award at the New Zealand Airports conference in Auckland last week, has enjoyed her role with the airport company. She says it has been the most exciting and varied job that she could imagine anyone having. A recent highlight was the Nelson Airport 75 year anniversary celebration, a free event for the whole community. “You deal with everything from plane crashes to being escort for a group of Iwi and Doc removing a dead dolphin from the foreshore, to scooping exhausted Godwits off the grass runway or meeting and escorting royalty.” However, Kaye says it is the nice everyday people that she will remember the most. Kaye plans to retire on December 19 and will stay in Nelson, where most of her family now reside.

full circle. “In China, acupuncture is older and more accepted that modern medicine,” Qiu-Hu says. “When I first came to New Zealand it was still regarded as alternative but now that has changed and it’s integrated into the mainstream.” Paddy says they can treat a wide range of conditions although most of their patients come to them after suffering soft tissue sports injuries. Tapawera School’s Bike club’s mad hatter party stolen trailer Children and staff at Tapawera Area School a Mad Hatter Party last Friday as part tyres replaced enjoyed of the 5 + Day School Challenge.
A trailer belonging to the Nelson Mountain Bike Club has had its tyres stolen and left on blocks, but a Nelson business has come to the rescue. When Paul Jennings, a member of the Nelson Mountain Bike Club, went to pick up the club’s trailer for an upcoming race, he found the wheels were missing. He called around to see if anyone from the club had borrowed them, but soon realised they’d been stolen. The trailer was kept in a locked Nelson City Council depot located at the start of the Codgers mountain bike trail. The lockup was considered to be safe and the club had never encountered any trouble in the past. The Top of the South Downhill Double Header race held last week, involving 100 athletes, required a trailer to transport the bikes up the hill, and without a trailer, there would be no race. With only two days before the race, the club posted a notice on Facebook asking if anyone could loan them some trailer wheels for this event. A mountain biker saw the notice and sent a photo to Tyres & More Nelson owner Adrian Curtis, asking if he could help out. He responded by gifting four new wheels, tyres and locking wheel bolts to the retail value of around $1200, he also fitted the wheels to the trailer. “I used to be a mountain biker and raced a little bit over the years, and I still have an affinity with mountain biking,” he says.

the homes, the result Stonewood Nelson achieved was hugely gratifying. Their bronze medal build was a tidy four bedroom family home that backed onto a well-established forest, providing much sought after protection and privacy. With a large front lawn and numerous plants, the property had plenty of room for outdoor enjoyment. The flow of the house worked effortlessly for all purposes of family life, with an open plan layout incorporating the lounge, dining and family room, and a natural colour scheme making for a cosy family area. The Stonewood Homes showhome represents the quality of their craftsmanship to potential clients. Their silver medal winning build sees an efficient use of the outside space to create an area that feels larger than it actually is. It also features an outdoor fire which adds to the general ambience while inside the home, the 2.4m entry door creates a feeling of spaciousness. The mas-
ter bedroom is cleverly positioned away from the other three rooms to offer privacy and an oasis away from what can often be noisier house members. It took something special to receive the gold medal and Stonewood Homes achieved it with their ‘special design’ home, nestled in the heart of the Marlborough Sounds. With a spectacular view to recommend it, the home was enhanced with a spacious kitchen, four generous size bedrooms and a durable, low maintenance, shadowclad Coloursteel corrugated exterior. There is no doubt that one of the key elements to Stonewood Homes Nelsons success, comes from a team who live and breathe the philosophy of the business. Director, Rhys Horncastle, has built the company up to its current position of excellence, and has recently made some major changes to ensure the steadfastness of the business for the future. New Stoke store opening this Friday
Hamish.Fletcher Lawyers Corner of Songer Street & Neale Avenue
Meat lovers around Nelson will be licking their lips in anticipation, with news the Mad Butcher is very soon to be opening its doors. On Friday November 14, Nelson franchise owners Dan and Nikki Perrin will be welcoming the public to their new store, on Songer St in Stoke, to celebrate the grand opening. There’s no doubt the Mad Butcher is a firm favourite with kiwi’s, and has been providing quality meat products at great prices since 1971.
With 39 stores around the country already, Dan and Nikki’s shop brings the total to 40, which is not only exciting for them, but for the whole of the franchise. "It's a fantastic opportunity for the people of Nelson to get top quality meat at very competitive prices. The reality is that Mad Butcher shops really do bring the prices of meat down, for example, when the store opened in Christchurch, meat prices there dropped overnight, it is very exciting times for Nelson," says Sir Peter Leitch.
The Mad Butcher has been a reputable source of meat for that summer barbeque, succulent roast and many other delicious meals, and Dan and Nikki are committed to carrying on the good name here in Nelson. It was a huge factor in deciding to be part of the Mad Butcher in the first place, alongside the influence of the man himself, Sit Peter Leitch. “The Mad Butcher has been in the game since 1971 and that story alone is pretty impressive; and we are very Hamish Fletcher excited to work for an iconic kiwi brand LLB that is now the Mad Butcher, Commerical/Maritme so that was a of it. because people are realising there are more options now,” says Dan. The new store has taken over what was previously the Stoke Rugby Clubrooms, but has undergone a massive transformation, from benches and rugby jerseys to lamb legs and sausages. Dan himself completed a butchery apprenticeship after leaving school and then worked at the Riccarton Mad Butcher for six months when it opened. His move to Nelson was prompted by developments in his sporting career and he has been a Nelson local for the last 13 years, while continuing to play rugby throughout the country. His repertoire of supporting achievements includes 38 games for the Tasman Makos and around the same for Bay of Plenty, 14 games for the Crusaders and half a dozen

New Stoke store opening this Friday Corner of Songer Street & Neale Avenue for the Chiefs. Sport continues to remain at the forefront of Dan’s interests, as well as his enthusiasm to be part of such a well-loved and respected business.
Finding a premises suitable for accommodating them wasn’t the easiest task in the process of setting up the store, and it took around 12 months of searching to find and
secure the clubrooms in Stoke. “We just thought there was an opportunity in the market in Nelson; another option for people who were after quality meat. The Mad Butcher franchise has been enthusiastic about coming to Nelson for a while, they just haven’t had someone on the ground in Nelson dedicated to finding a site,” says Dan. The Mad Butcher Nelson will be stocking everything and anything your barbeque can handle. From grocery lines to the finest cuts, you name it they’ll have it, and if they don’t stock it in store, they will do their very best to get it for you. “We’ve got butchers on site from 7am until 7pm, seven days a week,

Garin College student wins first sea swim race Garin College student Thomas Heaton and Marlborough College for Girls’ Sally McMath won their long course races on a chilly opening night of the Port Nelson Sea Swim series last Thursday. Thomas recorded eight minutes eight seconds for the 800 metre course that started with a long leg into a strong incoming tide and finished with a fast downstream sprint to the Nelson Yacht Club. Luke Kelly was second in 8min 13sec with Hayden Squance third in 8min 54sec. Sally finished in 9min 3 sec just ahead of Caitlin Delany (9min 27sec) and Pip Dwyer (9min 49sec). Ben Price and Bryony Marriott were first ashore in the short race over 300m. One hundred and fifty-six swimmers competed in the
opening race of the series that continues every Thursday over the summer starting at 6pm. There will be an added incentive for swimmers to compete in this summer’s series after Wildside Travel donated a trip for one lucky swimmer and their partner to Samoa for the Samoa ocean race series in August. All travel, accommodation and entry costs are included in the spot prize that will be drawn at the end of the sea swim series. After each swim this summer, a competitor from the long race will be drawn at random and be eligible for the big prize. At the end of summer, these swimmers will go into the draw to win the big prize - swimmers must compete in a minimum of 12 swims over the summer to be eligible for the final draw.

Silver Fern rally speeds through Murchison The epic Silver Fern Rally made its way through Murchison over the weekend. Best of the locals is Garry Adcock and his co-driver Mark Dalton, after the first day of racing they were coming second in the Challenge section of the event. There are three sections to the event– the Historic Trophy for 2-wheeldrive cars, the New Zealand Silver Fern Challenge which caters for more modern 2-wheel-drive cars, and the Silver Frond which takes place over the last three days of the event only. The rally will cover 1150 kilometres of competitive special stages over eight days before it finishes in Queenstown next Saturday after travelling through Marlborough, Nelson, West Coast, Canterbury, South Canterbury, Otago and Southland. Who do you see? The other day I was walking around the Nelson Market with a friend. We were there for lunch, and I watched my friend struggle to get served. I should mention that due to his past and his culture, his appearance was a little different from mine. The way he dresses, combined with some moko (facial tattoos) was enough to make it difficult to buy lunch. This made me really sad. He’s a very good guy, proud of his culture and doing excellent work in his community. You only have to speak with him for a few seconds to realise that. But he wasn’t being given a chance.

Three years ago the Church on the Hill decided to improve the support offered to older members of the community. Kay Peterson got the job! Kay is a great example in many ways; firstly because she came to work for a different church, not the one she is a part of — this is tricky as we all have our ways of doing things and change can be a challenge, but Kay has shown how to do this well. In her 50s she set out on university study, having left school at 15. She completed her degree and continues to learn and question. She is a lively person to have around. In addition Kay has been key in setting up the community lunches at Church on the Hill, and the Richmond Community Christmas Lunch. She is an inspiration to us all and we thank God for her. Kay has networked with many agencies involved in supporting the elderly and her job is not just for the church but anyone in the community who would like some support. If you have any questions about faith, or would just like some advice she will be delighted to meet you. This service is free. Kay works on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8.30 am to 4 pm and can be contacted on 544 8844, or you can email her at seniors.onhill@xtra.co.nz

As a church we are supposed to be good at this, but like any bunch of humans, we don’t get it right all the time either. We do have the example of Jesus of Nazareth, a man who went out of his way to meet people that the rest of society had written off. Jesus is recorded as physically touching people with leprosy, inviting himself to dinner with tax collectors (a hated group in his society), and talking to foreigners.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and I think we all do this to a certain extent. The natural instinct when we encounter someone who is different from us, is to label them a bit of a freak, or feel uncomfortable, or even fearful of them. When we do this, we end up judging the person by their jacket and missing out on meeting someone interesting.
So can I encourage you to look past appearances, and meet the real people. Even if it’s just to smile and

Navigation Safety Bylaw: Temporary Reservation and speed-limit uplifting for Waka racing in the Kaiteriteri/Marahau area
Closure of Roads to Ordinary Vehicular Traffic
The Motueka Waka Ama club has applied to the Tasman District Council to run an event within the coastal marine areas of Kaiteriteri and Marahau. The planned races will have competing craft and support vessels passing through and occupying the Kaiteriteri swimming and water ski areas at the start and finish of each event. The racing course will be between Kaiteriteri Bay, Sandy Bay and Fishermans Island. Pursuant to the provisions contained in the Navigation Safety Bylaw, the Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster has granted a temporary reservation of the Kaiteriteri swimming and water-ski areas and a uplift of the 5 knot speed restriction for those involved in the annual ‘Waka te Tasman’ event, between the hours of 2.00 pm and 7.30 pm on Friday 14 November 2014, and 8.00 am and 5.00 pm on Saturday 15 November 2014, (backup day Sunday 16 November 2014, 8.00 am – 5.00 pm). The effect of the temporary reservation will be to prevent other activities including water skiing or swimming from occurring within that area within the time specified. Event marshals have the authority to require other users to vacate these areas as required, but may allow limited use when racers are well offshore. An uplift of the 5 knot speed restrictions has also been granted to Waka Ama and support vessels directly involved in the event between Anawera Point and Guilbert Point, including Fisherman Island but excluding Otuwhero Inlet and Little Kaiteriteri. A number of conditions have been imposed on the organisers of the event, and these conditions may be viewed by contacting the Motueka Waka Ama Club, or Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster on, Ph. 03 543 8400 during office hours.
