Social Bubs proving very social Simon Bloomberg A new parents group, formed to help Nelson mums and dads with young children connect and create lasting relationships, has taken off after 80 mums attended the group's first outing earlier this year. Social Bubs was set up by two young mothers, Rachel Eggers and Catherine Jopson, who were finding it difficult to meet other young parents after moving to Nelson. The group held its first meeting at Founders Park on Mother's Day weekend and Rachel says they were overwhelmed

by the number of parents who attended. "I've moved back to Nelson after living in Brisbane for six years and was finding it hard to connect with other young mothers," Rachel says. "Catherine was in a similar situation, moving to Nelson with her husband who had come from here, so we decided to set up Social Bubs. "We had a Mums Meet Mums function at Founders and 80 mums turned up, so obviously there was a need. There are a lot of young mums returning to Nelson or moving here from bigger cities and Social Bubs

helps them meet other mums. "We also held a Dads Day Out at Founders Brewery on the same day and about 30 dads turned up. They were only allowed one drink though because they had to look after the babies." Rachel says Social Bubs organises an activity every fortnight and last Friday they were invited to the Richmond Aquatic Centre for a free infants swimming lesson. Young parents can find out more about Social Bubs on their Facebook page or by emailing socialbubsnz@ gmail.com

The Wakefield Police Station has been like a secondhand letterbox store this week after a number of stolen letter boxes were recovered after being dumped in the Wai-iti River. The letter boxes have been stolen from around Wakefield and Brightwater over the last two weekends, with a handful being recovered

and returned to their owners. Constable Craig Clayworth of the Wakefield Police says they received 17 reports from residents about the stolen letterboxes although there may have been more thefts that were not reported. Craig says they have fingerprinted the recovered letterboxes to try and identify

“Probably Light Nelson, I haven’t been yet but I’m going to go, definitely. I went last year and it was beautiful.”

“The Founders Book Fair would be mine, I go every year. And the Sprig & Fern Summer Harvest Fare, I just love the local food and the wine and mixing with people.”

“We haven’t had a chance to get to Light Nelson, much as we’d like to, but we like the music festivals, especially the Adam Chamber Music Festival, that’s really high class.”

“I enjoy the Brightwater wine and food festival - the Sprig & Fern Summer Harvest fair that they have in Sundial Square, that’s always really good and the one at Mapua.”

Comments posted on Facebook make it clear that Brightwater and Wakefield residents are fed up with the thefts with one Brightwater resident posting “thank you very much to the brainless stupids that stole our letterbox and also our neighbour’s last night in Brightwater”. Another Brightwater resident posted that their neighbour had their letterbox stolen for the second time and that it’s “so sad that people think this is a funny game...it’s expensive”. Craig says if anyone has any information on the thefts they should contact police on 5463840.

Travellers Rest to be restored The new owners of Appleby’s Travellers Rest, David Croy and Juliette Craik, are planning to restore the historic old building that has been vacant since 2012. The Travellers Rest opened in 1851 and soon became a popular wayside inn with horse stabling, horse and carriage hire and accommodation for travellers. However, the historic two-storey tavern has fallen on hard times in the last few years and was put on the market soon after the last tenants vacated the building in April 2012.

Scallop season cancelled The 2016-2017 scallop season around Nelson and Marlborough, which was due to open on Friday, has been cancelled due to low stocks. The Ministry of Primary Industries announced the closure on Tuesday following consultation on the longterm sustainability of the Southern Scallop Fishery that extends from Pepin Island to Cape Koamaru and includes all the Marlborough Sounds. The partial area closure applies to both commercial and recreational fishers, and gives the scallop beds time to recover.

Boxers get ready to Fight 4 Victory Simon Bloomberg Richmond mum Annie Trathen is “really nervous but really excited” about stepping into the ring for Fight 4 Victory III at the Trafalgar Centre in November. Annie was one of 20 people announced to compete in the third edition of Fight 4 Victory at a gala dinner attended by Victory Boxing ambassadors Monty Betham and Nathan Fa’avae at Bowater Hyundai in Nelson on Friday night. The 47-year-old legal assistant will fight Nelson’s Sally Russ in the charity event organised to raise funds for the Victory Boxing Club’s youth programme that supports young kids in the community. And it’s the success of that youth programme that has motivated Annie to step into the ring. “I’m really nervous but I’m really excited about it, but I wanted to do it because it’s such an awesome cause,” Annie says. “They say it takes a village to raise a kid and that’s what Victory Boxing is all about - they are amazing and they put so much time into it.” Annie says she is also looking forward to the personal challenge of training for the event and learning new skills. “I wanted a challenge and thought I’d better do it before I get too old. I’ve absolutely never done any boxing before although I copped one when I used to own the Railway [Hotel].

Photo: Evan Barnes/Shuttersport. “There was a fight between a logging gang and the freezing works boys and I walked through at the wrong time. I never saw it coming so I hope I see the next ones coming in November.” Annie the says her son Harrison, 16, “thinks it’s pretty cool” that his mum is training for Fight 4 Victory. “He was there with me on Friday night which was pretty awesome. I’ve supported him all these years, managing his rugby teams and looking after him so it’s his turn to support me now.” Sally also threw her hat into the Fight 4 Victory ring because she wanted to support Victory Boxing and face the challenge of getting fit and stepping out of her comfort zone. “I like what Fight 4 Victory

stands for and sometimes we need to do things that scare us and take us out of our comfort zone. I had our first training session last night and thought holy heck - it’s very explosive and very technical.” Sally says she has a “very, very supportive husband” who encouraged her to take on the challenge while her two step-sons think “it’s pretty cool” that she is boxing. Richmond’s Nathan Sharp, who has been matched up with Brightwater’s Nigel Kelly, says he was motivated to step into the ring by the opportunity to push himself. “This has motivated me to get fitter, and while it’s a great cause, I thought this was a great opportunity to learn something new and challenge myself at 47,” he says.

Julie Taylor, who is matched with Karly Larking, says the chance to help kids who are looking for a pathway spurred her on to don the gloves. “I’ve always been a big believer in giving kids a chance so this seemed well worth it and it’s something I’d like to tick off my bucket list.” Fight 4 Victory III will be held at Trafalgar Centre on November 5. The bouts are: Simon Mardon v Craig Morice; Andrew Shaw v Michael Vesty; Harry Morris v John Gallagher; Corey Boland v Jarod McLauchlan; Matt Ayloff v Mike Rutledge; Adam Mohktar v Ben Cox; Amber Rowland-Connor v Kate Donaldson; Annie Trathen v Sally Russ; Nathan Sharp v Nigel Kelly; Karly Larking v Julie Taylor.

AmAzing results from nelson lAser CliniC Don’t let a decision you made in your 20s turn into a permanent regret. Wanda Doocey, from Nelson Laser Clinic, is having amazing results removing any trace of tattoos, and the same goes for unwanted hair. One by one people have walked through the doors of Nelson Laser Clinic for hair or tattoo removal services and one by one they have walked out as success stories. Unwanted body hair can affect people’s confidence and even restrict the clothes they wear, thanks to Wanda, some of Nelson Laser Clinic’s results have been, quite literally, life changing and the best thing about her service is that “it’s not as expensive as you think.” Many people mistakenly believe that the process of laser removal will cost a fortune, but Wanda has had the satisfaction of pleasantly surprising a number of clients with the actual cost, and encourages

18 Nile Street, Nelson

people to contact her to enjoy a free, no obligation consultation. While hair removal can generally be achieved after four to six sessions, tattoo removal depends on multiple factors. However, not all of Wanda’s clients desire the total removal of a tattoo and after just a couple of sessions, the original can be considerably lightened, allowing a much better tattoo to replace it. A face to face consultation is the best way for clients to gain a full understanding of the laser removal process, although if people wish to send in a photo of their tattoo, Wanda is more than happy to give an estimated cost. While Wanda is a fully qualified laser specialist who knows exactly how to achieve the best outcome for her clients, Nelson Laser Clinic’s successful results are also due to using the latest, medical grade laser technology. The most important

(In the I.N.P. Medical Centre)

thing for Wanda is that her clients’ skin remains perfect at all times and by using the best equipment available on the market, Wanda has been able to achieve the permanent removal of tattoos and hair with no burns, no scarring - no damage at all to client’s skin. With so many clients satisfied with their results, Wanda is looking forward to transforming many other people’s lives in the future. Give Wanda at Nelson Laser Clinic a call today to see how she can help you.

Nelson news website passes million hits

A website dedicated to Nelson news passed its millionth milestone last week. nelsonlive.co.nz – owned by the same locally-owned media company as Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly – was launched 15 months ago to give Nelsonians up-to-date news and information throughout the week. Since its launch, nelsonlive.co.nz has continued to build momentum and last Friday passed one million hits. The website now attracts an aver-

age of 5500 hits a day. nelsonlive.co.nz has a team of six journalists writing news, taking photos and filming video for the site, but also encourages members of the public to phone in with news tips, photos and information. Editor Andrew Board says the site is evolving all the time. “What our stats are showing us is that readers enjoy knowing what’s happening in the region when it happens, while reading more indepth stories in the newspaper.

It’s an interesting dynamic and clearly one that is working. Our newspapers are stronger than ever and the website is proving to be a good foil throughout the week.” He says the average hits over the past few months are triple what they were a year ago, showing how the site is gaining in popularity. If you ever capture an interesting photo or hear of a great story, call us on 548 5900 or 021 972 572.

Smart Week, Wednesday, June 15: Organisers of Richmond’s Smart Week say the trial event went extremely well and that the massive response from locals means it will definitely be hosted in other areas, the next step being a Nelson Smart Week. The Windows 10 workshop was the most popular of the week with organisers having to turn people away, while the workshop teaching businesses how to use Instagram and Facebook to engage clients was also well received.

Thousands help light up Nelson Jessie Johnston

They came to see a light show and Light Nelson surely delivered, tonight being the last night for locals to get out and see what all the fuss is about. The exhibition featured 62 installations from over 40 artists, including laser technology, digital imagery, LED lighting and neon paint, which were spread throughout Queens Gardens, Albion Square and into the NMIT campus. Run for the third time, Light Nelson 2016 is being called an “overwhelming success” with 7000 people attending the festival on opening night, over 12,000 on Saturday night, 15,500 on Sunday night and overall it is set to beat the 2014 attendance of 40,000 people. “This is based on the count at the main Hardy St gate into

Queens Gardens, with some allowance for those who only went to the NMIT site,” says Light Nelson Trust chair Brian Riley. Both young and old took delight in the event and organisers say that the response from the public was almost exclusively positive. “It’s absolutely amazing,” says Nelson’s Katie Gilsenan, who was amongst those enjoying Light Nelson on Sunday night. “We just think it’s wonderful and to see all these people coming out. It’s just wonderful to see Nelson people come out for the arts. I don’t know where to begin and where to stop with it really, we just raved about it when we got home.” Mandy Chignell believes the show could be the next Wearable Arts. “Because it’s just so spectacular."

Far left; Ella Bilderbeck and Lila Young, both 6, explore Nocturnal, which they helped create. Centre; Locals enter Queens Gardens through the installation Shapedshift. Centre top; Sophie, 11, and Cooper Nichols, 7, check out the luminous chalk drawing workshop. Bottom right; Lily, 9, and Rosie Claridge, 5, with the installation Making a Splash.

Hana ready to hip hop in Vegas Simon Bloomberg All the hard work and training has paid off for Nelson dancer Hana Morris, after she was selected to compete at the World Hip Hop championships in the US next month. Hana, who started competitive hip-hop dancing at the Mad Beat Studio in Richmond seven years ago, will travel to Las Vegas for the August 8 to 13 champs with the Wellington-based mega crew, The Capital. The 18-year-old Nelson College for Girls graduate joined the 25-dancer crew when she moved to Wellington this year to study psychology at Victoria University. It won't be the first time Hana has competed internationally after dancing in a Mad Beat crew that finished fifth at the Hip Hop Unite in Holland in 2012 and second at the World of Dance in Hawaii in 2013. That crew also reached the semi-finals of the popular television show New Zea-

land's Got Talent. However, Hana says the world champs will be a big step up, with over 3000 dancers from 50 countries entering the event. All mega crews will complete a three-and-a-half to four minute routine with the top 20 advancing to the semi-finals and then the top six progressing through to the final. "I'm really excited about it," Hana says. "I've always wanted to do this competition because it's like the Olympic Games of hip hop." Mad Beat teacher Gemma Lang says Hana's selection is well deserved and "a reflection of how hard she has worked." "I saw her dancing about seven years ago and invited her to join one of our crews. I could see that she was talented but she has also trained and worked really hard to get where she is." Although Hana is dancing in Wellington this year, she still returns to Nelson

Gemma says that's been beneficial to the studio because it exposes their dancers to new ideas and styles. "The dance company she's with is one of the oldest

hip hop companies in New Zealand, so they are very good," Gemma says. "They have a lot of choreographers and teachers and get exposed to a lot of different styles, and she brings those ideas back here which is good for our

Former principal’s 50 years in Rotary club celebrated For 50 straight years, former Henley School principal Nathan (Mac) Brownlie has been a keen and active member of the Richmond Rotary Club and recently that was acknowledged by his fellow members. Mac was presented with a certificate from the District Governor of Rotary at a special ceremony at Stillwater Gardens, where Mac now lives. Mac had earlier been made a Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary top international award. Mac served on many Rotary committees over the past five decades and participated in numerous community service and fundraising projects. He was president of the Richmond Club during the 1981-82 Rotary year, during which time he oversaw construction of the Richmond Begonia House in Washburn Gardens as well as the planning and fundraising for the construction of amenities and full facilities for the Riding for the Disabled organisation. The Richmond Begonia House which many in the community enjoy today was a project to mark the 25th anniversary of the club. Mac was also a very popular principal of Henley School from 1968 until his retirement in 1983. He was responsible for the many improvements to the school during his time there. He was a member of “J Force” after WWII and until recently very active with the Richmond RSA where he took a keen interest in the welfare of members.

Nathan “Mac” Brownlie with the certificate to acknowledge his 50 years of service to the Richmond Rotary Club. For health reasons he was recently compelled to take up residence at Stillwater Gardens but continues to remain very interested in Rotary, Probus and the other organisations that have had his membership and support. Richmond Rotary Club’s new president John Barnes presented the certificate to Mac on behalf of their district governor and said it was a great honour that his first official duty as president should be to acknowledge the 50 years invaluable service of one of his club’s longestserving members. A cake was cut by Mac to celebrate the occasion and the corridors of Stillwater Gardens echoed to the singing of ‘For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow’ by all the Rotarians present.

Urban to open Snaparock

SNAPAROCK WINNERS: Nelson band Urban, from left; Richard Bradley, Betsy Hill, Mat Charles, David Turnhout and Nao Uda. The band received over a quarter of the total votes in an online competition to open Snaparock, which is part of September’s Snapafest festival in Nelson. The competition was run through www. nelsonlive.co.nz. Photo: Kate Russell.

Kate Russell The votes are in, and local band Urban have won a spot to play alongside an impressive line-up of Aussie rockers at Snaparock, which is coming to the Trafalgar Centre in September. Urban were just one of 12 bands that entered the competition, with the public casting over 700 votes last month. The top three acts Urban, Bryce Wastney and Cover Me - were then put to Graham “Buzz” Bidstrup, drummer from Sydney super-group The Dynosaurs, who chose the overall winner. Speaking to the Nelson Weekly, Buzz said it was a “hard choice” picking a winner. “All three acts had something special about them, but in the end I went for Urban as they would most likely bring a younger demographic to the concert and, as locals, they will have some good support from their fans,” he said. “All artists were right up there as far as talent and professional attitude are concerned, and it was great to hear the diversity in the music of each of these artists.” Urban bass guitarist Mat Charles says playing at Snaparock is a “huge opportunity” for the band. “I’m happy that the work we put in with our fan base, in terms of getting votes, translated into winning the gig,” he says. “For me, it’s another important step as we continue to grow our fan base locally and further afield.” Guitarist David Turnhout says it also means a lot that they got the tick of approval from Buzz. “We have had so much support, especially for this competition as well as our debut album, and it’s greatly appreciated.” Snaparock will take to the Trafalgar Centre stage on Friday, 16 September, in a concert which features legendary Aussie acts Mental as Anything, The Dynosaurs, Angry Anderson and The Narcs. The concert is part of the two-day Snapafest, which continues at Founders Park on Saturday, 17 September, with local seafood cuisine on offer. For tickets to Snaparock, head to ticketek.co.nz/snapfest. A member from the voting public is still in to win a double-pass, and this will be announced next week.

Your Voice Waimea College rugby captain celebrates 50 games: What a great achievement for the two players who have reached 50 games and the other two players in the team who will reach theirs before the end of the season. Fiona Power Herron.

I don’t know you, but 100 years young is impressive. Happy birthday. Nita Hippolite.

Great story and picture, There are few players that reach the 50 games for the 1st XV. Congratulations to those that have made it in the past for Waimea College, the present for the combined teams and those who are still to make the huge achievement, a great honour to all the players, both past and present for their commitment and excellence in their chosen sport. As both managers and parents of said players it is a very proud moment for all involved and a great achievement. Well done to you all. Niki Hewson.

About time. I hate it when winter isn’t winter. Meant to warm up with the rain again on Wednesday, unfortunately. Philippa Foes-Lamb.

Motorcycles packed up and heading for Invercargill: Had the NCC supported this more-than-excellent motorcycle show, the show would still go on. Don’t forget to pay your rates Nelson, the council needs more finance to aid their bureaucratic incompetence. Thousands of dollars spent to paint portions of Bridge St pavement blue. John Gray.

Is new petrol station really best? I have been following up on the proposed new petrol station as reported on by the Waimea Weekly, both through school local current events lessons, as a teacher at Waimea College, and by informing my MP Damien O’Conner who has written a letter to the Tasman District Council on behalf of this constituency south of Spring Grove and to the west to Mapua voicing our concerns. I have personally talked to the Baptist Church who had not even been consulted of the proposal and by phone to the Aquatic Centre and Ark Childcare centre who also were not aware of the plans. The Richmond Lions have the first woman president in their 49 year history after Sue Burrowes took office at the club’s meeting last month. Sue has been a member of Lions for nine years, initially with the Wakefield Lions Club which later merged with Richmond. She has also been involved in a number of other community groups including 48 years in Girl Guiding in the UK, US and New Zealand and is a founding member of Waimea Area Quilters. “There is great need in this area, which might surprise people, and we in Lions receive many requests for help for all manner of reasons,” Sue says. “As a Lion, I enjoy giving back

to my community and enjoy working with my fellow Lions to that end.” Sue says she is honoured to be working with a dedicated group of 17 men and two women in the club who serve their community both in Richmond and the Wakefield area. She says the group’s theme for this year will be Serving Our Local Community. Richmond Lions are also hoping to work closely with the Tasman District Council on a project to mark the Centennial Year of Lions International this year. In addition, the Richmond Lions are also working on an event to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.

A new community and business initiative to help lonely and isolated pupils make new buddies is being offered to primary schools around Nelson and Tasman, after being rolled out at Tahunanui School last week. Tahunanui School received two Buddy Seats on Thursday after school parent Joy Shackleton initiated the project at a Health Promoting Schools group meeting. A member of the group, Kaye Latham, subsequently approached the Waimea Menzshed to build the seats from materials donated by Halswell Timber, Guthrie Bowron Nelson and Dulux, and they will be installed in the playground next term. Kaye, who is a community advisor for the Department of Internal Affairs, says Buddy Seats have been used successfully in schools around the country. If a pupil feels isolated, they sit in the seat to encourage their schoolmates to invite them to join in their playtime activities, she says. Senior pupils from Tahunanui School's peer mediation group, who play-acted a typical Buddy Seat scenario at assembly on Thursday, agree it's a great concept. "I think the buddy seats are a good idea for children who are sad and

don't have friends," Maddie Hay, 9, says. "You don't want to spend lunchtimes alone because that's kind of boring." Riley Kirkwood, 10, says the seat will give kids a chance to “have a break”. “Sometimes you have fights with your friends and you just don't want to hang out with them at that time, so you can find someone else. You could use the buddy seat to chill out and have a break from your friends." Teacher and member of the Health Promoting Schools group, Jane Tambisari, says the seats are "all about inclusion" and helping create supportive environment at the school. "We'll put one in the junior school and one in the senior school for next term. The peer mediators and other pupils will be able to help the vulnerable kids and invite them to play and make friends." Kaye says the Menzshed and Halswell Timber have also joined forces to make a Buddy Seat for Stoke School. Kaye says Stoke School had already installed a Buddy Seat last year and it had been "so successful they wanted another one". Any primary schools interested installing a Buddy Seat at their school can email Kaye at kaye.latham@ dia.govt.nz

Waimea College Special Education Reunion Wednesday 3 August, 10.30am - 1.00pm. Phone Sarah on 544 6099 #850 Waimea College’s Special Education Department continues to be a central part of the school, with staff having worked alongside over 700 students, their families and whanau since 1989 when the department’s doors first opened. Now, 27 years later, Waimea College’s Special Education team are keen to catch up with all ex students and their families with a special reunion morning tea. Sarah Kennedy has been working at the Special Education Department for 26 years and looks back to the beginning of its formation. In 1989 the Education Act changed al-

lowing students with special learning requirements to choose which school they studied at, rather than being allocated to attend a local special school. Waimea College started their Special Education Department in that year with nine students, one teacher and one teacher aide in the middle of C block. Our foundation pupils enjoyed joining their peers for physical education, Lake Rotoiti Lodge Year 9 camps, materials technology classes and spending break times around the college grounds, they also worked hard on

Waimea College Special Education Reunion Wednesday 3 August, 10.30am - 1.00pm. Phone Sarah on 544 6099 #850 extend students skills. Over the next 27 years the department roll grew from nine to 42 and the college built four more teaching spaces, one of which is designed especially for students with Autistic Spectrum learning profiles. Today we have 36 students, six teachers and 11 teacher aides who work both full and part time. It has also been extremely rewarding to see our graduates living their lives all over Nelson and beyond. Chris is now living in a flat and working while he continues his passion for painting and for weight lifting in the National Special Olympics competitions. Kelly was our first student to go flatting with two of her friends, receiving a bit of help to do the cooking and other household management tasks. Two other friends, Ashleigh and Sonia are flatting together and go to NMIT part time. Flatting isn’t always easy, sometimes the week’s ice cream gets eaten all in one go and someone has their music too loud but with a guiding hand, these problems are always able to be sorted. Lisa, Amy, Troy and Natasha live in a house with fabulous care workers and spend their week days with their friends at Pinnacle House following their special interests. Maddie lives in her flat, goes to the gym every day and has her own business which involves the careful scanning of old photos to digitally preserve them, she also has some support for her cooking and household chores and Ben, who lives in a flat attached to his parents’ house, has continued with his screen printing business. The idea to host a Special Education depart-

ment reunion is down to staff member Alleigh Browning’s after she realised that since 1999, we haven’t had a chance to meet up with our graduates and their families and share their news. The event will provide an opportunity for graduates to take a tour of Waimea College and see all the changes, followed by a presentation from two of the department’s past students, who will talk briefly about what they are up to. To bring the day to a close, there will be an opportunity to catch up with long lost friends and have some photos taken. The Waimea College Special Education Reunion will be held on Wednesday, August 3, from 10:30am until 1pm, in the Waimea College Hall. Tickets can be picked up and purchased from the Waimea College Finance office on the day, which includes a goody bag, a morning tea, and when you buy a ticket you will receive a voluntary information sheet asking for contact details so staff

Celebra t ing o n e ye a r in business It’s been one very successful year in business for Prestige Euro Works thanks to owner James Martyn’s expert knowledge on European cars. James initially worked for a garage in Christchurch that specialised in repairs and maintenance on European brands and saw that a number of the cars were being sent from Nelson. After visiting the area a few times, James decided to open his own business on Gladstone Rd and provide repair and maintenance

services to local European car owners. James chose to specialise in the field of European cars because of the more complicated mechanics they incorporate. No matter how well a car is manufactured, there are always things that can break down but when repairs are required for a European car, it can sometimes be a nightmare to repair them. From day one James began building the loyal client base he enjoys today, providing an honest job and communicating

7 Gladstone Road, Richmond • www.npd.co.nz Waimea Motors has a long history in the Richmond community, meeting local’s fuel needs with a friendly face and a central location. Recently the service station underwent a

major facelift to create a much more modern looking shop and forecourt, as well as changing fuel providers from Mobil to Nelson Petroleum Distributors, NPD. The one thing owners Barry and Cindy

Milne want people to know though, is that they’re still operating independently and are now back up and running after their six week closure for the upgrade work to take place.

After making the decision to move from Mobil to NPD, the change came into effect from January 1, this year and with it has come some great fuel saving benefits for locals.

03 547 4666 www.coman.co.nz Proud to be associated with Waimea Motors NPD Waimea Motors has seen a major redevelopment including a spacious forecourt that allows drivers easier access and a new canopy stretching across the forecourt to the shop, meaning dry heads when fueling up on rainy days.

“Our change in fuel suppliers has allowed us to do this redevelopment and provided some great offers to our customers, particularly the SuperGold card which gives people over 65 a 15 cent discount,” says Barry. Local shoppers can also get in on some amazing savings with NPD Waimea Motors accepting all supermarket dockets and offering 12 cents off each time. Whether they’re from New World, Pak n Save, Countdown or any other supermarket, everyone is welcome to bring their fuel docket to the service station to claim this 12 cent discount, upgraded from the four to eight

cents offered on most existing discount coupons. The fact Nelson Petroleum is a local supplier was also a driving factor in Barry and Cindy’s decision to switch. “Over the last few years NPD has been able to compete with the other four major companies. They are doing very well throughout the South Island with a lot of new sites, so it seemed like a great opportunity to be part of it,” says Barry. With their new partnership offering so many great advantages to drivers, why wouldn’t you want to fuel up at the Gladstone Rd service station, especially when it’s recent redevelopment

Nelson's fishing fleet to be blessed with fireworks

7 Gladstone Road, Richmond • www.npd.co.nz

Brittany Spencer

Fireworks will take to the sky and fishing boats will take to the sea, at this weekend’s Blessing of the Fishing Fleet. This is the 16th year the blessing has been held following the tragic loss of over 20 fishermen to the ocean in 1996. On Friday night, fireworks will stream across the sky from 6.30pm, with viewing from the waterfront and the port hills. The Motueka Brass Band will playing on Saturday from noon at the Seafarers’ Memorial, while the fishing boats line up along Wakefield Quay. The blessing ceremony and procession will begin at 12.30pm. Seafarers’ Memorial Trust spokesman Mike Smith says it’s an event that has won a place on the Nelson calendar and in people’s hearts. The Lantern Understanding religious differences Like all the West, New Zealand society has become increasingly secularised and religiously illiterate – large swathes of us no longer understand what strong religious convictions can mean to people.

Saturday 16 July 9 am–12 pm Church on the Hill

Older Youth, Going deeper Sunday 24 July & Sunday 14 August 5–7 pm Church on the Hill hall Discussion on what participants are interested in Pizza provided

On the second night, we will consider basic differences between Islam and Christianity. We will find out about the God of the Qur’an and the God of the Bible. Islam considers itself to be the final religion, the corrected revelation of two corrupted Monotheisms – Judaism and Christianity. It is interesting all main Biblical characters, including Jesus, are considered to be Muslim prophets.

Starting at 7pm on Thursday August 18 at the Church on the Hill, 27 Dorset St, Richmond, will be a series of four talks on the religion of Islam.

Finally we will be ready to look at Jihad, particularly as understood by the Islamic State and consider the serious implications of their beliefs and their success. Why are these Muslims doing what other Muslims are not? What is the Islamic State’s long-term goal? How can non-Muslims assist our Muslim friends in combating extremism?

It’s been over a year since The New Gate Company 2007 Ltd shifted from Pascoe St to Echodale Pl and the business is thriving in their new location. Glen and Julie Berkett took over The New Gate Company in 2007, taking what had been a staff of two and growing it into a team of six dedicated professionals who have helped the business earn a glowing reputation both locally and beyond the region. Once of the main benefits of their new workshop and office is that it’s hard to miss.

Sitting proudly on the corner of Echodale Pl and Fayette Lane, the building offers easy access for customers and is right in the middle of the industrial business hub. While Glen and Julie have a huge customer base of their own, their new position has also meant new business relationships with surrounding company’s. An engineer by trade, Glen and Julie decided to take on The New Gate Company after feeling the need for a change in career, the business also of-

Don's five decades on the bowling greens Jacob Page Don Carter’s willingness to lend a hand with the Stoke Bowling Club greens in 1966 has led to a passion for the club’s greens that remains just as strong 50 years later. “In all those years I’ve never woken up and thought ‘I have to go sort those bloody greens down at Stoke’, I just love it and I’ll keep doing it for as long as my health allows me.” The former orchardist started playing bowls thanks to an annual fruit growers tournament at Mapua – from then on, he was hooked. Don joined the club in 1960/61 as a player and it was his former boss, who was helping with the greens, that asked him to lend a hand just five years later. “My first job was to sieve soil and the next year I started to put on fertiliser, and in those days you had to put everything on by hand rather than the machinery we have today.” Don took over the role in the late 1960's as a volunteer and started receiving payment for his work a few years later. “I used to be a fruit and berry grower even when I was doing this voluntarily, and even when I began to get paid I kept doing

with the job,” he says. “There are no distractions first thing in the morning, no one to talk to. “What I’ve always loved about doing the greens is that you can see something for

your work. “Once the greens have been cut, you can look at them and go ‘by jeez, that was worth the effort’. “It is hard to satisfy all bowlers, some of them think the greens don’t play as well as they were expecting, but in my experience those are often the bowlers who come up on the losing end which is just human nature. Currently, Don is re-sowing the green that is named after him, in the hope it will be ready for December. Don stopped playing bowls a decade ago having won 16 centre titles, playing at multiple national championships and even finishing fourth at the national singles one year. “I fell in love with the game and I’ve had a few people mention over the years that Don Carter prepares the greens to suit his own game,” he laughs. “If only I knew how to do that, I just try to produce a consistent green. “Looking back I think I spent too much time playing it with a young family at home, but that’s what happened.” Don says the great people at the club have ensured he still enjoys the role. “I’ve never thought about retirement. “My motto is work longer, live longer.”

Map showing the areas (in red) that are closed to the taking and possessing of scallops for the 2016-17 Southern Scallop Fishery season. Following consultation on the long-term sustainability of the Southern Scallop Fishery (SCA7), there will be a temporary partial area closure in place for the taking and possession of scallops in the Nelson and Marlborough Sounds area for the 2016-17 season, starting Friday 15 July 2016 and ending 14 February 2017. No person may take or possess scallops from the areas marked in red on the map above.

Federal upset high-flying Stoke t Jacob Page Federal’s pulled off the upset win of the season, beating high-flying Stoke 1-0 at Saxton Turf on Saturday. Stoke had knocked over previously unbeaten Aotea Kiwi 7-1 just a week earlier but a Ryan Gerrish goal just before halftime proved enough to give Federal the win. Federal coach Dean Machen says his team deserved the win, having created a few clear goal scoring chances that should have extended the margin. "I thought we had it all over them," Dean says. "Goal scoring has been an issue for

us and on another day the score would have been three or four nil." He says Jarron Steffens had his best game of the season and he wasn't alone in a strong team performance. Stoke coach Len Paris was at a loss to describe his team's dip in performance. "After last week you think everything is humming and then we have a result like that. It was a very even game but we didn't create enough chances to score." In the other men's match, Tasman United eased past Division two's Waimai United 4-0. Tasman coach Tim Kerr was pleased with the structure and

shape his team kept, while Waimai United coach Brendon Burnett was pleased his team kept the match competitive given the youthful look of the team in 2016. In women's action at Saxton Turf, a goal in each half was enough to see Tasman ease past Beawai, 2-0. The match between Federal and Aotea Kiwi was cancelled as Federal had a number of players away for the under-18 tournament.

Federal Titans men's team got the points for their game after Aotea Kiwi defaulted. There is no women's hockey this weekend due to school holidays and the various tournaments going on around the country, but the men will be in action. Waimai United will face Stoke on Turf 1 at 12.30pm; Tasman will battle Federal Titans on the same turf at 2pm and Federal will face Waimai United 2 straight after at 3.30pm. The Nelson region has players

competing for Tasman in the under-18 women's association tournament in Timaru this week as well as players representing Capital in the National Under-18 hockey tournament in Palmerston North. Olympics-bound Black Stick Kelsey Smith will be back in Nelson next Tuesday for a coaching clinic with young players, before she and fellow former Waimea College pupil Anita McLaren [formally Punt] complete their buildup for Rio next month.

Netball’s next generation start busy SportS tournament period for Nelson

Jacob Page Nelson’s Saxton Stadium is hosting the next generation of Silver Ferns this week as the New Zealand Under-19 Netball Championships kick into action. More than 500 people are expected to converge on the event which began yesterday. Tasman is one of 18 teams competing, with the final to be played on Thursday at 3pm. All of Saxton Stadium’s five courts will be in action across four days. Nelson Netball Centre manager Chelsea Routhan says it is a chance for netball fans in the region, as well as young, aspiring players, to get a glimpse of New Zealand’s best emerging netball talent. Tasman find themselves in a challenging pool alongside Hutt Valley, Hamilton City, Pukekohe and Waitakere City. Tasman coach Robyn Leonard said the team was aiming to earn a couple of pool victories and finish mid-pack. “This is a tough age-group for us as a number of our players leave the region to continue study.” Robyn says, defensively her team is strong, with Holly

The annual Dovedale Hill Climb can be a bit of a challenge but on Saturday 64 locals answered the call, tackling the gut-buster run. The steady but twisty 11.2km incline can be a bit of a mental challenge for some but Richmond’s Phil Costley ran the hill with ease, coming first in 41 minutes and 21 seconds. Less than three minutes behind him were Simon Mardon and Pete Versey with only 28 seconds separating them. The first female to cross the finish line was Nelson’s Olivia Bird with a time of 50 minutes and 19 seconds. Race organiser Eileen Beattie says everyone enjoyed the race and it’s just a really nice run. “It was a really good turn out, it was fabulous weather, the road condition was fantastic this year and it is so nice to finish in the sun up the top.” The race has been running for over forty years and at the Wakefield’s Stuart age of 72, local StuWatts on his 33rd art Watts is a veteran Dovedale Hill Climb. with 33 Dovedale Hill Climbs under his belt. Despite a hamstring injury that he got a week after last year’s race, Stuart conquered the hill in 68 minutes and 36 seconds, placing 47th overall. “I was very happy with the run this year, I was running on an injury so it was a testing time but I ended up with a time faster than last year so that was good.” Stuart says although the race doesn’t change, it’s always been about the mental challenge. “I think that’s why so many people do it,” he says. “I definitely enjoy that side of it, you have to if you’ve run marathons and races.” Stuart says he looks forward to the race each year and is keen to challenge his time again next year.

Jacob Page Max Darling and Tyler Marsh are two of the most promising players in Nelson basketball, but have had different paths to their success. Tyler, from Waimea College, became the youngest person to play in the National Basketball League when he got court time for the Nelson Giants last year at the age of 14. It wasn't until Max was 12 that he even picked up a basketball. His mum convinced him to try out for the Tasman under-13 boys team. Just a few short years later, the Nelson College pupil has played for New Zealand at under-17 level in Australia and he was named tournament MVP. Not bad for someone who'd barely picked up a basketball before trialling for an age group team. thers gave him a basketball. The duo will be key components of Tasman's national under-17 campaign this week on the North Shore. Both have played together in Tasman teams, with current Giants captain Sam Dempster as their coach for a few years. With Max standing 1.93m and Tyler 1.90m, they offer the size Tasman teams traditionally lack. Max says he knows he has to perform and believes he will. "There's expectation on me and that brings pressure, but I think I play my best like that." Tyler will play an important leadership role. "We know we can win the tournament," he says. "We just have to play with confidence and everyone has to step up." Both say they'd love to play in the NBA but believe getting paid to play the game is a big enough aspiration for now.

Lock’s long limbs leads to crucial try Jacob Page Sports Editor

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Waimea Old Boys lock Lee McBrydie found the perfect time to score his first try of the season. The rangey lock probably wasn’t on the top of the list to be chasing a chip kick from his first five eight Luca Roden, but he got his legs pumping and grounded it deep in the ‘in goal.’ It proved to be the turning point

in Waimea Old Boys winning 2218 and booking their spot in the semi-finals of the Nelson Bays division one rugby competition. Lee’s second half effort came after a rough first half. A stray knee in a ruck had opened up a cut above his left eye. It made him look like a wounded boxer rather than a rugby player. “I’ve been chasing the ball all season so I was happy to get one. “I was thinking to myself that I had to keep running and try to watch the ball and hope for a good bounce.” The referee discussed the decision with his assistant in front of numerous WOB supporters and eventually agreed it was a try. “I was certain I got there first,” Lee says. “I saw it hit the ground with my hand so I was 100 per cent certain.” It opened up a 22-11 lead early in the second half and, despite a late try to Stoke winger Chris Little which set up a grandstand finish, the visitors held on. “The guys showed plenty of heart,” Lee says. “We have had a lot of injuries and there are

their 35-19 loss to Nelson. Marist await Nelson after they beat Kahurangi 48-38. In division two; Collingwood beat Takaka 43-12, Waimea Old

Boys downed Stoke 17-5, Marist edged Huia 30-24, Nelson were too strong for Wanderers 24-12 and Riwaka thrashed Rangers 5312.

Stephani and Jess to play for Bay of Plenty Jacob Page

Waimea Old Boys players Stephani Mitchell, 30 and Jess Foster will represent Bay of Plenty in this year’s Farah Palmer Cup national provincial women’s rugby competition. Photo Jacob Page.

American-born Stephani Mitchell has come a long way from her days at university in Kansas where she walked up to a bunch of women carrying “an odd-shaped ball” and asked what it was for. Next week the Waimea Old Boys prop and her team-mate, No 8 Jess Foster, will head off to join the Bay of Plenty women’s team in this year’s Farah Palmer Cup national provincial rugby competition. “I was sick of playing soccer and wanted something new so I saw this group of women carrying around this odd-shaped ball and they told

me it was a rugby ball. “I started playing then and there.” The 30-year-old met her Kiwi partner while playing the game in Oregon and she has been playing for Waimea for the past four seasons. She had a friend in Rotorua who was looking for players to face an Australian Invitational team earlier this year and after the match, Stephani was asked to trial for Bay of Plenty. She dragged Jess along for the ride and both made the cut. “This is the rugby Mecca of the world,” Stephani says. “I knew I always wanted to play [in New Zealand] at some point but didn’t think it would happen this fast.”

Jess and Stephani will be two of six Tasman women’s players likely to play in the FPC this season. Jess is a No 8 who will also provide lock and loose-forward cover. The 24-year-old says she started playing when she was five to keep up with her brother and has loved the game ever since. Tasman pulled its team from the national competition several years ago but both women would like to see a Tasman team make a comeback. “We have some excellent players here but the only opportunity to improve is to leave the region, so it would be good if there was a pathway for top players to stay put.”
