A Wakefield woman will now have to pay a $650 vet bill after her show horse injured itself in panic following a firework explosion on Saturday night. She claims her mare ran into a fence and fell onto a waratah which then went into its face after being startled by a firework. “It’s sliced all the muscle and in a horseshoe kind of shape she’s got five quite wide stitches,” says the woman who didn’t want her name printed. “She’ll be scarred for life.” The three day firework sales have already finished, but users of them are able to continue right throughout the year. And even in rural areas, fireworks have been let off frequently, well after Guy Fawke’s Day on November 5. “I thought I’d be safe in the country because country people have animals and animals don’t like fireworks.” The woman chose not to speak with the neighbour because

But his mother wouldn’t have that and successfully argued the ban, receiving his birth certificate last week with his full name – Alfie Baron Biggs. they were doing nothing illegal, and were lighting them in a controlled environment. “They’re not going to offer to pay my vet bill.” But while the restriction of fireworks is hotly debated every year, a Richmond veterinarian of 40 years says people should not expect to see them banned. Jeff Grimmett, who is the practice manager of the Town and Country Vet, says incidents like this are uncommon. “It’s not really a big issue. It’s pretty rare. Others tried to call their children by symbols like full stop (.), a star (*) and 89. Baron falls in the “royals” list of banned names that also includes King and Princess. But Marianne Hart-Biggs argued the name wasn’t about giving her son a “title”, just something meaningful. “Baron came from where Glen and I lived in London when we got married. We lived in Baron’s Court and we always had that in our mind for a middle name if we were to have a son.” She says it never dawned on her that the name would be banned and was in shock when a letter arrived from the department of
internal affairs to say the name had been rejected. “I got a letter back and my friend who was reading it over my shoulder said ‘ah, this is awkward’. I thought ‘oh, what am I going to do now?’” After a week of thinking about it with her husband Glen, Marianne decided to write back and try to argue the name should be allowed but conceded it was a long shot. “When I wrote back the first point I made is that his name is Alfie and his title is Master, Baron is his middle name. The only times it will be seen is on his passport and drivers licence. Basically no one is going to refer to him as Alfie Baron Biggs. “I explained the sentiment be-
hind the name and I sent in a copy of our marriage certificate that showed our address in Baron’s Court when we got married but I thought there is no way they’re going to accept this.” To her shock, a package arrived a couple of weeks later with Alfie’s birth certificate, including his middle name. Marianne says she did a “wee jig” at the letterbox. “I was so happy, I called Glen and said ‘our boy has a middle name’.” She says he’s been sleeping through the night much better since the birth certificate arrived. “He couldn’t sleep before without his middle name, he’s much more settled now and I feel like he is complete.”

Fireworks freak out animals, says Wakefield horse owner FROM PAGE 1 taken into consideration, saying it can go a long way to preventing these types of incidents. “If we can keep them in a safe environment, which is really just a huge paddock, then they can run and do whatever but they won’t injure themselves.” SPCA Nelson’s relieving manager Carol Schofield was certainly on the other side of the argument though, and says banning fireworks altogether was supported by the national organisation. It wasn’t common for SPCA to deal with animals that had been injured by fireworks, but there are always reports of missing animals
that might have been scared off by the explosions. “SPCA nationally would like to see fireworks banned. Fortunately we’ve had no injuries [here] this year.” Carol says the worst case Nelson SPCA had dealt with was when a bird was found strapped to a firework. The Wakefield woman is against over-the-counter sales but believed public displays should continue. But Jeff questioned whether hoping for a ban on fireworks was a reasonable expectation. “The reality is it’s probably not. It’s about being sensible. Stay away from horses and cattle if you can and, by-and-large, people do.”

3.5 tonnes of rubbish collected on coastline
Organisers of the Big Beach Clean Up are still flabbergasted as to how a dead possum stuffed with a Barbie doll was littered at Tahunanui Beach, but the overall feedback from Saturday’s event is that the litter problem is reducing. Everything from plastic rubbish to TVs, couches and of course the dead possum were picked up by 600 volunteers from Cable Bay to Tonga Marine Reserve. Just 3.5 tonnes of rubbish was collected, down significantly from last year’s 7 tonnes. Janice Gravett, who is the coordinator of the event, says this year’s collection was just one third of the total collected in the first year, and that was pleasing news. “The message is definitely getting out there. We’ve been including more children and they’ll be our next generation of

course so that’s really good,” says Janice. “I think it’s all good news and the day went really well.” Janice says weird and wacky items are always a feature during the Big Beach Clean Up and admits the dead possum certainly tops the list. “We see TVs, chairs, couches, tyres and we see a lot of plastic but to be honest there’s a lot less all around.” The worst spots on the entire coastline are on the roadsides, where people are throwing rubbish out of their vehicles, and that was one area where the public was definitely not getting the message. “By far, over half of the rubbish always comes from the roadside. But overall I’m very happy. We just keep seeing a decrease every year. This is our fourth event and every time it’s going down so I have to take that as a positive trend.”

Three head students NEWS in brief from one Hope family
MAN HIT BY CAR: A Nelson man escaped without serious injury after being hit by a car in the early hours of Sunday morning. The accident happened on the corner of Collingwood and Bridge St, after the driver of the vehicle didn’t see him walking on the road in time to stop. Police and an ambulance attended the scene, where the man was treated for minor injuries to his face and arm. LORD NELSON ARRIVING: Nelsonians are being urged to get out on the water and onto Rocks Rd this weekend to welcome the tall ship Lord Nelson as it enters the harbour. The ship was built in 1986 and is designed for able bodied and disabled crew. It is on its first visit to NZ. For those who don’t have access to a boat, there will be a good view along Rocks Rd from about 3.15pm. PAYMARK FIGURES UP: Nelson has once again recorded strong spending growth, ahead of the national average. Figures released last week by payments provider Paymark show spending through the Paymark network was up 8.1 per cent nationally from October 2012 to October 2013. In Nelson the news was even better, with spending increasing by 8.3 per cent.

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Waimea College principal Larry Ching jokingly queries if there’s something in the water near the Knight household, as for the first time in the school’s history, a third sibling from the same family has been named as a head student. Just like older sister Alice was in 2011, and brother Hugh this year, Bridget Knight has been confirmed as a head student for 2014. “I was quite stoked,” Bridget simply puts it. “It was quite surreal at the time [of the announcement].” The head student position is the highest leadership role at the school. Each year four Year 13s are selected following a rigorous process that includes nomination, a speech to their year group, a student vote, and an interview with the existing head students and the senior management team. Larry confirmed this was the first time three siblings from the same family had been named head students. However, there had been other times when two had secured the role. “It’s certainly unique,” he says. “[Their parents] must have done a great job of raising them. Maybe there’s some-

Photo: Phillip Rollo. thing in the water where they live?” Both Bridget and Hugh described being a head student as a “huge honour” and admitted there had been pressure to follow in Alice’s footsteps. “Mum and dad always said it wasn’t something I had to do, it was my choice. But people were always saying I had to do it, and I felt the pressure from them but not my family,” says Bridget. Her comments were echoed by Hugh. “It was something I always wanted to do and as soon as I got it all the pressure

went back on Bridget. Poor Bridget.” Alice is currently studying at the University of Canterbury and Bridget says she was the first person she told. “I rang her straight away and she cried. She was so happy for me so that was cool.” Seeing as it was the first time in the school’s history, the family understood the significance, and Hugh was quick to thank his upbringing. “It’s pretty crazy that nobody has missed out. They’ve obviously brought us up quite well, good morals and stuff like that.”

Ageing population a ‘major concern’ Nelson’s new chief medical officer says the region is healthier than most other parts of New Zealand but its ageing population is a “major challenge” that health officials will continue to deal with. Dr Nick Baker was appointed as the chief medical officer for Nelson and Marlborough at the end of last month and will formally take over the new role at the end of November, replacing Dr Heather McPherson. His job is to be a “mouthpiece” for patients, putting clinical concerns in front of the board and district health board management. He says Nelson’s ageing popula-
tion is the biggest concern for the region’s health services. “If you look at it, we’re going to have fewer young people to support a growing ageing population and we know that in the five years before people get a serious illness and die they are going to be high users of health care. So if we can delay those five years for as long as possible and expect people to be physically active and fit into an older age group then that is a good thing. “The health of the elderly is a major challenge to us.” That view was backed up by Grey Power

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz Nelson president Neville Male who says the issue is a “sleeping giant” as health services, housing and other services for the elderly could be strained under the weight of too many older people in the region. “He’s spot on there, we just can’t allow our population to blow out to the numbers we’re seeing now with the people coming here to retire, without having something in place that identifies the issues associated
and how it will be addressed.” Neville says the issue is his top priority and Grey Power is working on a plan in place to help deal with the growing population of older people. But Nick says our weakness is also our strength and although there are a lot of elderly in Nelson, they tend to be healthier here than in other parts of the country. “We’re quite lucky that we have a healthy community and we have a longer life expectancy than many parts of the country. We have a climate that supports a longer life expectancy and we’re a less deprived community. There are a lot going our way.”
Police stop 5000 cars in three days Nelson police stopped 5000 cars over the weekend in a major crackdown to coincide with the 4 and Rotary car event. The staggering number of cars stopped saw 776 infringement notices issued, 370 of those for excessive speed with one driver clocked at 149km per hour. That resulted in a roadside suspension of a licence. The operation included police from Marlborough, the West Coast and Canterbury, along with collections staff and NZTA vehicle inspectors. Nelson Bays area commander Steve Greally says that with more than 100 car enthusiasts coming to Nelson for the weekend police wanted to be proactive in deterring poor driver behaviour. Ten people were caught driving with excess breath alcohol, the highest of which recorded 1012 - two and a half times over the legal breath alcohol limit. There were also 77 breaches of graduated driver licences. Fifty three vehicles received pink or green stickers for being in unsafe condition. “The condition of some of those vehicles was shocking. I’m just relieved they are off the road as they were accidents waiting to happen,” says Steve.

Nelson Mail circulation plummets Circulation of the Nelson Mail has taken another whopping drop, losing almost 10 per cent of its paid circulation in the past 12 months. The latest independently audited figures show the Mail has now sunk to only 12,614 copies over a possible circulation of almost 50,000. The paper also gives away an ad-
ditional 465 copies per day. The New Zealand Audit Bureau of Circulations publishes figures every quarter and the latest stats show a 5.29 per cent drop on the previous three months and 9.51 per cent drop on the same time last year. That equates to around 1400 lost subscribers in just one year.
The drop is again among the highest of any daily newspaper in the South Island, only the Oamaru Mail and the Timaru Herald performed worse. The Fairfax-owned Nelson Mail has been cutting costs in an effort to save the paper, with at least a dozen redundancies this year alone. It has also out-sourced all of its
ad design work to India, which has allowed it to cut local jobs. The new figures come just a month after Nelson was confirmed as the second-fastest growing region in the country and fastest in the South Island, but the floods of extra people in the region hasn’t been able to slow its circulation drop.
Richmond’s oldest home hits the market

It has been labeled as “special”, a “rare opportunity”, and having been built in 1853 it’s easy to see why a little cottage in Richmond has grabbed so much attention since the property its on hit the market. Situated on 77 Hill St, the 5408 square metre property includes the heritage cob cottage built in 1853 as the homestead for Joseph Bonnington, making it one of the oldest homes in the entire region. But also on the property is a 1908 Edwardian villa with three double bedrooms – and it’s going for offers over $950,000. Anthony Carppe of Bayleys says it’s a special property because of the age of the cottage, the inclusion of the villa, the size, and its location being right in the heart of Richmond. “It’s a pretty special and unique home,” he says. “You won’t find a combination of size of the land and historical value in the community. This is pretty well known and a lot of people have viewed the open home that had known about it for years.” While the size is certainly an attraction, the unique point is easily the cottage. But that might not have been the case if current owner Grant McAlpine hadn’t bought the property with his
wife Carol in 1992. Grant explains the cottage was a “real doer upper”. “I had a busy life working for a construction company as an engineer and I wanted something to keep me busy when I retired,” he says. “It’s been really fun. The cottage has been a great source of interest for people and they’re all pleased we did it.” At the time of purchase, the cottage, which has had just eight owners in its life, was “derelict, rundown, badly decaying, full of rats and mice” and not exactly somewhere you’d want visiting friends and family to stay. But with the approval of the Historic Places Trust, several months later, all of the mud on the in and outside was good as new, there was a new roof on top, plus a fully restored interior. Grant turned it back into the pristine heritage cottage it should have been. “It would have been a shame to see it fall down and that’s what it was doing, it was just gradually falling to bits. It was worthy of restoration just because it was one of the earliest buildings in Richmond.” Anthony says the property would probably suit a family or business-minded people.

The customers voted with their feet last week with thousands of shoppers swarming into Kmart’s latest outlet which opened in Richmond last Thursday. “It’s really good value with some great bargains,’ says satisfied Richmond shopper Julia Noble emerging from the new discount department store with her arms full with baby daughter Zara and some of those bargains. “I got this horse and carriage toy for Zara’s second birthday next month for just $3 and I liked the layout because it’s more like a department store than a discount store.” Tahuna’s Toni Dowling was also happy with the new store saying she had spent $140 on household goods and clothing. “I had an appointment in Richmond so I thought I’d take a look. It’s really good - Richmond needed a shop like this.” But Kmart isn’t just good news for shoppers, according to Nelson MP Nick Smith who says the new store is also good for the region’s economy. The store provides 90 jobs which Nick says will help reduce the

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. region’s already low unemployment figures. “The opening of the new Richmond Kmart is a real sign that economic confidence in the region is on the up. New Household Labour Force Survey figures revealed that we have the lowest unemployment rate in the country at 3.9 per cent – well below the national average of 6.2 per cent and the lowest rate we’ve achieved for some years. “It is particularly encouraging that this improvement has come about by the growth of 1300 new jobs over the last year. The good news is that these figures pre-date exciting new developments like the
Richmond Kmart store.” The building, owned and constructed by Nelson firm Gibbons Holdings, is also home to a new Benge & Co Green Grocers, and Couplands Bakery. Next month a coffee shop and sushi store will also open onsite, followed by The Warehouse and a two-storey office block which are due for completion in July next year. Gibbons purchased the former Placemakers site neighbouring Richmond Mall in 2001, and it has sat vacant since 2006. Richmond Kmart store manager Camrin Holmes says the opening day was a big hit with thousands of people coming in the doors.

The shearing season traditionally starts early next month but for one of the Nelson-Tasman region’s biggest gangs, at least, it never really ended. Tapawera shearing contractor Roger Simpson and his team have been flat out all winter shearing around 12,000 hoggets mostly for Eighty-eight Valley farmer Ian Parkes. That kept Roger and three of his gang busy when normally they would be fencing around the district or shearing in Australia. “We’ve had two to three days a week shearing trade hoggets when normally we wouldn’t have had any work,” Roger says. “We do all of Ian’s shearing and most of the hoggets were the ones he was trading.” Trade hoggets are last season’s lambs which have been fattened over winter and need to be shorn before being sent to the freezing works. Although Roger’s gang has been shearing through the winter he says the real work will start early next month when they begin shearing ewes. Farmers usually start weaning lambs on December 12 and that will coincide with shearing the ewes. “We’ll have five or six shearers for that and we’ll probably shear around 160,000 sheep from December to the end of February.” Roger’s gang shears throughout the Nelson-Tasman region as well as on the West Coast and Marlborough. A few of his gang also work in Australia in the winter. “There’s a big demand for shearers over there and they get good money. They pay $2.70 a sheep and that’s Australia dollars so that’s about $3 New Zealand,

Sheep numbers are down but shearer numbers are down too so we still have plenty of work.” Roger concedes shearing is hard work “especially in the first two or three years” but once you

I think there were seven juniors at the Marlborough Show last weekend - we have a younger guy, Carlton Field, starting with us and he’s going well.”

Shop ‘n’ Win returns Following on from the huge success last year Richmond’s biggest competition is about to start again. The Waimea Weekly/Richmond Unlimited Shop ‘n’ Win starts today. In its seventh successful year the competition gives a customer in a local participating business a chance to win $5000 cash and the shop itself wins $2000 cash. Over 45,000 entries were received last year and Weekly publisher Steve Page reckons it will get to 50,000 entries this year. A list of participating shops is advertised in the Weekly on a weekly basis for the next five weeks and the competition finishes on December 15 with the results in the special Weekly holiday is-
sue. The shops involved will have posters on the front windows and entry boxes in store with Richmond Mall having entry boxes at the main desk. “We are really happy that it’s such a local event and that it also encourages shoppers from all over to spend some time in the real centre of retail for the region,” says Steve. “It’s a great way for the local retailers to say thanks for your business and offer an opportunity to give something back.” He also wants to remind customers entering to fill out the forms correctly or they will be invalid.

Henley School will contribute $900 for the Firefighters Charity Ride for Cancer thanks to a sausage sizzle and cupcake fundraiser last week. Nelson fireman Rob Millener is one of about a dozen locals that will take part in the motorcycle ride throughout the country. It starts in Auckland and ends in Invercargill, and participants enter at different stages, generally when it reaches their town. His son Jake, 11, went to school and
told his class about his dad’s mission, and wondered how Henley could support it. It was decided by his teacher Tony Rampton that a barbeque would be the best way to raise money. There has not been a fatality in the Nelson and Tasman regions this year.

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Azhar says the response from Nelson car enthusiasts had been “absolutely awesome”, and it was 90 per cent likely that the event would return annually. “People kept coming to me and said ‘we needed something like this to happen to our town.” They had speedway, and the drags four times a year, but nothing like this has really been here,” he says. “We were a little hesitant in the beginning but with the response and the immediate competitor entries we’ve got we knew this was going to work.” Some event-goers, who had attended the show in Christchurch previously,
commented that there was less to see and do, but Azhar was well aware of that and says the first year in Nelson was all about building relationships and cementing its future here. “The negative is definitely that we couldn’t do everything to the extent to what we wanted and that includes using the car park outside for drift demos. But this year was about building relationships. He hopes that a drift competition and dyno challenge could be part of an expanded event in the future. “We want to bring in drifting, burnouts in confined space, gymkhana and things like that. But those happen in environments where we can create and we need space for that. People know what we’re all about now. It was estimated that 85 per cent of the event-goers were from Nelson.

225 years of firefighting service

Nine local firefighters were awarded with gold stars on Friday evening, a recognition that saw 225 years of service to the fire service celebrated in one go. The gold star is presented to firefighters who have served 25 years in the fire service. The recipients were made up of career firefighters, including Nelson’s only female career firefighter. While the accolade has been given out to Nelson firefighters before, Kevin Shea, president of the Nelson Marlborough Gold Star Association says the ceremony to recognise nine different men and women

was a great achievement for the region. “With the fluctuation of numbers in the fire service today, with people coming and going, it’s fantastic that we had a large number of firefighters achieve their gold star.” He says some of the firefighters who were acknowledged thought it was “no big deal, they’re just doing their job” with some not wanting to have a ceremony highlighting the fact. “Some of the old school guys
treasure them and they should, it is a great achievement for them. It’s a special occasion for our patch.” Each of the recipients was presented with a solid gold medal on behalf of the Nelson Fire Service and the United Fire Brigades Association, which they will wear on their lapel, by Terry Douglas past president of the Association. He said it was a “great privilege” to be doing the honours. Every two years after receiving the gold star, each firefighter will be awarded with a bar to attach to the ribbon of their medal.

Waimea Village residents to host annual garage sale
Waimea Village residents Fay Ross, Dennis Ealam and Bev Friend hold up a poster for this Saturday’s garage sale.
Waimea Village residents are opening their garages and getting rid of second hand treasures. The annual garage sale, run by residents of the village, will be held this Saturday from 8:30am with 12 stalls featuring everything from crafts, clothes and books, to fresh veges and plants. The garage sale is a fundraiser for the village residents committee. Resident Dennis Ealam says the
event has always been successful and he encouraged people to come down and grab a bargain and to enjoy the BBQ and Devonshire tea. “It’s an annual garage sale that we’ve run ever since the hall was built ten years ago,” he says. “It’s been hugely successful in the past.” Resident Bev Friend says the money raised wasn’t equivalent to the popular school fairs, but “for us it has been ideal”.

I know that the majority of men are not violent, however we cannot escape the fact that most violent acts against women are carried out by men. All men need to step up and be part of finding a solution to this problem. After all, we all have women in our lives, be they our mother, grandmother, wife, sister or daughter and we can’t stand by and see them be subjected to violence. In New Zealand on average 14 women are killed by their partner or ex partner each year and one in three women will experience some sort of violence from their partner in their lifetime. I’d like to clarify that violence is not just a physical act. Controlling behaviour, psychological and emotional abuse can all be equally damaging to a victim. Many victims say it’s actually worse than physical violence. So what can you do? Well for a start you can go to the White Ribbon website and sign the pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence to women. That’s the easy bit. Next you may have to challenge the attitudes or behaviour of your mates or your work colleagues. If you struggle to control your temper or you’re someone who has been violent now is the time to man up and do something about it. There is support available so make use of it. Wakefield gala raises $33,000 Wakefield School’s Twilight Gala has been described as a huge success by coordinator Jeanette Mattsen who says she couldn’t believe the number of people that turned up to support the event. “It was really busy let’s put it that way. It was an absolutely awesome evening for everyone.” She says organisers were relieved that dark skies that were threatening rain ended up holding out for the entire event. “It was a really great evening with a huge crowd. The feedback that I have had from people is that it was a really chilled, relaxed evening. And everyone enjoyed the entertainment.” She says the motorbike and side car
was a “thrilling ride” for the children and the haunted house was one of the biggest earners among the stalls. “Everyone really enjoyed the wild pork and venison, which our gala is really well known for.” Early counts of the takings indicate the gala attracted $33,000, which after costs are taken out will leave the school with a great fund to go towards a stage for their school hall. Karen and Ian MacLennan say they came along to meet friends and were also surprised at the huge turnout. “There are a lot more people than I thought there would be, but galas are always good for getting the community together.”

Ben Taylor is the only new comer in the superstock team with former 1NZ Dale Ewers being named captain even though he has not driven yet this season. Joining those two
will be regulars Blair Cunningham, Jared Gray and Shane Harwood. Subway Richmond’s new franchise owners Rob and Jude Hambrook are looking forward to continuing the great service the Sundial Square shop has provided over the last 12 years. Although Rob admits it’s been a big learning curve running a Subway store after spending 25 years in the police force, he says they are enjoying their new venture. Rob is working full-time at Subway Richmond while Jude, who is a pharmacist in the Richmond Mall, is helping manage the business and lending a hand in the shop. Subway is a real family affair for the Hambrooks with their two sons, Kieran and Sean, also working at shop over the summer after returning from Europe where they have been racing on the professional cycling circuit. • Well I got started and cleared away 8214
any plant debris that lay about untidily, and arranged my terra cotta garden. It was fun. Visitors would look strangely at me when invited to see this spectacle, but I didn’t care, I’m very happy with it, and still collecting more pieces to add to the garden. I don’t mind anything that is chipped or cracked, it can always be cunningly turned about to suit. Anyway a bit of wear and tear adds character. • But I also have another almost “plantless” garden. This time it is a “tufa pot” garden. • For several years our daughter and daughter-inlaw made a tufa pot each, to give to me as a birthday present. I was always delighted with this. [Tufa pots and real manuka honey is all I ever need for a present nowadays]. Anyway, I made a special place for all these lovely handmade pots, and commenced to plant them up. BUT, many of the plants grew too vigorously and covered the pots, so that the only time that I could enjoy my birthday presents was in the winter, when the plants had died down.
• So, along came another brainstorm. Why have anything in them anyway? But that idea was a bit too much to handle. So I planted up my treasures with spring bulbs, which die down in the summer, thus revealing their containers for my pleasure. This has turned out to be a good plan, because I know exactly where the spring bulbs are, and there is no danger of digging them up by mistake. • But I can’t let you go without mentioning some plants, eh. • A young woman asked about nasturtiums as a ground cover. She had a patch outside her kitchen window that she wanted to cover rapidly. Alas she didn’t receive the help from me that she had hoped for. I pointed out to her that nasturtiums are popular fodder for the large white butterfly, and I would have nothing to do with suggesting them as a suitable ground cover, even though I love them dearly [and alas, have removed them from my garden, I might add.] But I have been thinking about this and wonder if a crop of pumpkins would be a good idea. • The foliage is much like that of the nasturtiums, and if she planted the orange skinned variety the effect would be similar, and there would be the satisfaction of watching her winter store of food growing! • Climbers can also be handy as ground cover plants. Why not? So think about that as a crafty planting idea. In the meantime, keep on keeping on with your garden experiments. It’s a lot of fun.

It not have been much of a home advantage but Formula1 Powerboat racer Julian Stillwell is still smiling after winning the first round of the New Zealand Tour at Lake Rotoiti over the weekend. A local competitor, Julian is the current 1NZ in the top outboard class, but a change in format means that title will be much harder to defend this season. In the past the 1NZ title has been contested at a one off national championship. However, in a move that all drivers supported, it will now be decided over the course of the whole tour. “So whoever accumulates the most points over the series will be the New Zealand champion next year,” Julian explains. “We’ve always put an emphasis on the tour rather than the actual New Zealand title for that reason. None of us think a one weekend nationals represents the true champion.” So it’s not surprising that the weekend’s victory at the Nelson Lakes Regatta gave Julian plenty of reasons to be happy, having finished second overall in the tour last year. “It’s always a good one to win I reckon and it was very close, so I

national honours were special for the girls as they had come through the ranks together. “It’s been great because the girls have been together for the last three, four years now,” he says. Ed says Chelsea’s strength was her “post up” game. “She’s really strong inside and that’s what has really helped her.” The Year 9 trio were part of the Waimea College Junior A team that came second in the South Island earlier this year, and also featured in the Senior A team at nationals.

River Control 2013/14 Season Spraying To Start
Mapua Planting Working Bee
The Council will be undertaking ground based herbicide spraying to control woody and invasive weeds as per its usual annual programme in the fully maintained rivers, from November 2013 to April 2014 inclusive. Rivers included are the X&Y river rated sections of the Waimea/Wairoa, Wai-iti, Eves Valley, Moutere River and Company Ditches, Upper and Lower Motueka rivers, Riwaka and associated waterways, Tadmor, Sherry and Motupiko rivers. In Golden Bay the rivers included are the Waingaro, Anatoki, Takaka, Aorere and Kaituna. Herbicides used will be Grazon, Glyphosate and Metsulfuron. The main purpose of the spraying is to maintain flood channel capacity hence woody weeds growing on islands and beaches in the fairway are the main target. Please refer to the Council’s website (search ‘river management’) and the Council’s 2013/14 river work programme for further details. Alternatively contact one of the Rivers and Coastal Engineers on Ph. 03 543 8400.
The Mapua and District Community Association, with support from Tasman District Council and Nelmac, is planting a huge number of native grasses and shrubs on the Dominion Stream Flats area, which is situated on the Ruby Bay Bypass just past the Mapua turnoff, and needs your help! 5000 plants have been donated by Nelmac and all of them need planting during November. Everyone welcome, all ages. Helpers need to bring waterproof footwear, a spade and bottle of water. Sessions last two hours. Temporary Reservation and speed-limit uplifting for waka ama regatta – Kaiteriteri area – 15 to 17 November 2013 Tasman District Council’s Harbourmaster has granted a temporary reservation of the Kaiteriteri swimming and water-ski areas and a speed-limit uplifting for those involved in the annual ‘Waka te Tasman’ waka ama regatta, between the hours of 3.00 pm and 8.00 pm on Friday 15 November 2013 and 8.30 am and 5.00 pm on Saturday 16 November 2013 (with a postponement date of Sunday 17 November 2013 if required). The effect of the temporary reservation will be to prevent other activities including water skiing and swimming from occurring within that area for the time specified. Event marshalls have the authority to require other users to vacate these areas as required, but may allow limited use when racers are well offshore. An uplift of the 5 knot speed restrictions has also been granted to waka ama and support vessels directly involved in the event between Anawera Point and Guilbert Point, including Fisherman Island but excluding Otuwhero Inlet and adjacent to Little Kaiteriteri beach. Other conditions have been imposed and may be viewed at www.tasman.govt.nz /recreation/boating-fishing/special-events-and-activities.
Temporary speed-limit uplifting – Buller River – 16 & 17 November 2013 The Nelson/Marlborough branch of Jet Boating New Zealand Inc intends to hold a Club Family Run on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November 2013 in the main stem of the Buller River between Murchison and the Owen River confluence. Pursuant to powers provided to the Harbourmaster, the speed limits imposed by the Bylaw in relation to vessels within 50 metres of another vessel, or within 200 metres of shore or a structure are suspended for those vessels taking part.
