Simon Bloomberg Security cameras will soon be installed at sites around Richmond’s shopping centre in response to a wave of tagging and petty crime that is sweeping the central business district. The tagging has become so bad that Richmond Unlimited, police, Tasman District Council and Menzshed Waimea launched a joint initiative last month to paint-out graffiti after an increase in tagging on buildings and signs around Queen St. However, that has so far failed to deter the taggers and last week Richmond Unlimited announced that funding had been secured from the Pub Charity to purchase and install seven security cameras around the town. Richmond Unlimited chairperson Marina Buonocore says they had been approached by a number of businesses and organisations about the tagging and petty crime “that had been escalating over the last few months”. Marina says they applied for a grant from Pub Charity in mid-November and last Thursday found out the grant had been approved. “The guys from Menzshed have been painting over the tagging but you come back the next day and there’s a new canvas. We looked into CCTV systems and approached Pub Charity and put in application for a proposal and they have just come back and said ‘yes’

Driver finds love on the bus

In her 25-year career driving buses between Nelson and Richmond, Julie Eddy has come across all sorts of passengers: abusive passengers, funny passengers, kind passengers, passengers that have become friends and even one that is set to become her hus-

band. Julie has just celebrated 25 years as a Nelson bus driver and, although she says she’s had many friendships with her passengers, it’s clear who her favourite is. Brian Gabites started catching the bus from his Stoke home to Nelson, where he works at NBS, four years ago. They got
talking while on the bus and became friendly. Then Julie’s lawn mower broke and Brian offered to lend her his. She gratefully accepted and, after using it, dropped it back to Brian, who suggested dinner. Several months later, the pair announced in front of their families last week that they were engaged to be married.
Julie says it’s been the highlight of her career. “I guess the job has given me a lot over the years and now a fiancée.” Julie started her bus driving career in Waiau, in North Canterbury. There she drove the school bus but she left Waiau with her two children

“Excellent, I’ve just shifted back from Auckland and I’m right into that. Obviously it provides security and is a deterent. It’s great to publicise that there are cameras.”
“It’s a good idea to help identify people if there’s an event. It’s like our car camera, I never look at it but one day if there’s an incident, it’s there.”

She says, after about seven years she was given a full time job driving scheduled routes between Nelson and Richmond. Over those two and a half decades she says she’s made some terrific friends. “It’s a very social job, you always talk to people when they come on and my passengers and I have solved some of the world’s problems on the bus,” she jokes. was driving students to school at Nayland College. Recently, one of the exchange students at the school in the mid-90s was back visiting her host family and caught the bus to Nelson. “She was tickled pink that she had the same bus driver, it was very funny.” She says one of the hardest parts of the job was when her favourite passengers pass away. “I went to visit one passenger who I knew was sick. I took her some soup but she didn’t answer the door and I heard her calling out. When I got in she said ‘I was waiting for the angels to come and get me and you came’. After that she was put into the Hospice and she died not long

It was very sad.” Other passengers include a woman who brought her live chickens along for the ride in a bag and a drunk man who she picked up from the Rising Sun, who then fell asleep, missed his stop and ended up getting off back at the same pub when it came back to Nelson. She also had a man yell abuse at her for not letting him
ride the bus because he didn’t have money for a ticket. Julie also likes to go whitebaiting in Westport and give “little half-pound lots” to some of her older passengers. “But I didn’t do very well this year so I didn’t give much out.” She says the job has changed a lot in her time with the roads much busier, making sticking to the

schedule tough at times. “And there’s always road works somewhere, and that can be challenging to manoeuvre such large buses through.” The introduction of the new Nbus service in 2011 made for much nicer buses to drive she says. “They’re terrific, nice buses and much bigger so we carry a lot more passengers.” Julie says she intends to retire when she turns 65 “in a few years” and take time to travel and spend time with her six grandsons and, of course, her new fiancée. Julie and Brian haven’t set a date for their wedding yet but will still have plenty of daily bus trips together to discuss it.

Police: Meth-fuelled crime on the rise Andrew Board It is alleged that two teenagers who stole and burnt dozens of cars from Nelson to Wakefield since the beginning of the year were fuelled by methamphetamine. Kodie Reece Russell and Levi Jensen McMaster, both 19, will face charges ranging from theft of cars, arson and possession of methamphetamine – highlighting the growing problem in Nelson with the addictive drug. One of the men has been charged with 31 offences, the second man has been charged with 20 offences. Nelson Bays area commander, Inspector Mat Arnold-Kelly, says the two are alleged to have caused a significant amount of damage in the region. “The destroyed vehicles are valued at approximately $140,000.” While more details cannot be revealed as the men are now before the courts, Mat says crime caused by people using

Portaloos for St Arnaud: The Tasman District Council will be installing new portaloos at the St Arnaud Community Hall along with extra signage directing travellers to the current toilets at Kerr Bay and the Department of Conservation offices to cater for the extra traffic travelling through the town. Traffic volumes have trebled on State Highway 63 and 65 through Murchison and St Arnaud after the Kaikoura earthquake closed State Highway 1 last month. The portaloos are a temporary solution while council works on a permanent toilet Portacom which will be connected to the St Arnaud sewerage system with water obtained via the community hall’s supplies. In Murchison, new rubbish bins have already been installed and a site for a truck stop has been identified. Security lighting: Waimea Neighbourhood Support and Richmond District Community Patrol still have funding to install 14 security lights at homes of the vulnerable elderly residents. Waimea Neighbourhood Support coordinator Marty Price and Community Patrol secured the $2000 funding from Community Patrol New Zealand and have already installed five of the solarpowered lights. Anyone interested in having a light installed please contact Mike Gill of the Richmond District Patrol Charitable Trust on 027 286-4157.
Iconic waterfront property on the market 21 The Parade, Okiwi Bay, has been the ultimate getaway for the Holder family for over 20 years. Not often do these unspoilt ocean views come onto the market, but the decision has been made and they are selling up. “This was a really tough call for the family to make, letting this go, but we are ready to move in a new direction” says Kevin Holder. “We know the new
owners will love it here, we hope it gets sold locally to a family who will treasure the memories like we have.” When the Holders bought this slice of heaven, it was a pure New Zealand bach. Over time, and with two major rebuilds, the once tiny bach now has a commanding presence in the bay, with fantastic views out to Treasure Island and easy access to the shop, beach and boat ramp.
“Okiwi Bay is so convenient to Nelson,” says Paula Holder. “I just loved being able to remove myself from the hustle of day-to-day life. Simply getting in the car, 60 minutes later we were relaxing on the deck, enjoying the views and the peace and quiet Okiwi Bay offers. It refreshes the soul. We will definitely miss Okiwi Bay.” 21 The Parade, Okiwi Bay, is currently on TradeMe with
the listing #1214233789 and is being sold by Private Tender by Friday, 20 January, 2017. The owners will consider offers prior to the tender date. Open homes are scheduled for 18 December and New Year’s Day, 1pm to 2pm. Any enquiries can be made with Anthony Holder at antsholder@gmail.com or phone 027 229 7266 for questions regarding the property or to schedule a viewing. Advt.

FROM PAGE 1 which is great for the Richmond CBD.” Marina says the next step is “to sit down and work out a timeline” for installing the cameras although she is hoping they will be operational by next month. The cameras are likely to be installed at seven sites around the town and one of the cameras will have car number plate recognition capabilities. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne, who provided a letter supporting the application for funding under the banner of Richmond Safer Community CCTV, says the security cameras will “be a huge benefit to the town.” “They have been extremely effective in Motueka and I’m really pleased that Richmond Unlimited have taken on the project. I’ve seen the cameras working and they record very high definition images so anyone can be identified.” Nelson police senior sergeant John Price says security cameras are effective as a deterrent and also help police catch offenders. He says the security cameras in Motueka have already helped police catch “people responsible for some crimes over the last 12 months” “The point of these things is to try and encourage people to stay within the law and to prevent crime but they are also useful for catching offenders. But the sad thing about that is that the crime has already been committed.” John says Richmond Unlimited, police, council and Menzshed are already taking the right steps by quickly painting out the graffiti because that has been proven that “the sooner it is removed the less you get”. John says tagging is wilful damage and there are a “range of penalty options” available depending on the extent of the damage.

Truck takes out Ridgeway power pole: The driver of a truck that smashed into a power pole on Monday has walked away unscathed. “There was a car parked on the other side of the power pole and the truck has come by, clipped the car, and gone straight into the pole,” says Stoke station officer Ryan Hitchcock. The Ridgeway was cordoned off from Arapiki Rd to Marsden Rd as police and two Stoke fire appliances worked with the power company to cut off the power.

Shops decorate for Christmas Simon Bloomberg
But there’s not a Santa, reindeer or snowflake in sight in Copy Art’s display with staff member Karyn Thomas opting for a more summery, Kiwi Christmas display featuring two stylised Christmas trees. “I think we have to make our Christmases Kiwi Christmas and forget about all the things they do in England,” Karyn says. “That’s why I’ve chosen to make our display different from the traditional Christmas display.”
Senior reporter Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Karyn says she decorated the trees with baubles made from samples of giclee prints produced in their graphic design and printing shop. She says the decorations feature over 1000 different works by artists including herself and took months to finish. “I started back in August. I was
recovering from an injury and had plenty of time on my hands so I decided to make an early start on the decorations. “Everything in the display is hand-made except the lights - I haven’t worked out how to make them yet. I’m really pleased with it and it looks amazing when it’s all lit up at night.” However, Richmond Unlimited’s Kim Quint says Decorate2Win has attracted some high quality entries this year and the judges
will have a difficult job selecting the top three windows. She say Stitchcraft, the Hospice Shop, Got It Covered, UniChem Pharmacy and Bloom’n Easy Flowers and Gifts have all got into the Christmas spirit and transformed their shop windows into a Christmas wonderland. The winners will be announced on December 15 with first place receiving $1000 worth of advertising with the Waimea Weekly and $500 cash.

Community heroes recognised Simon Bloomberg The dedication of 11 of the Nelson-Tasman region's most outstanding volunteers and community leaders was recognised on Friday night when they received a Kiwibank Local Hero Award at a ceremony at Seifried Estate in Appleby. Nominations for the award were accepted from July 1 and September 30 this year, for people whose selflessness and determination has made a difference in the community. A select group of 350 people were chosen from 600 nominations from across New Zealand for the Kiwibank Local Hero Medal including NelsonTasman's Anne-Marie FowkeStayner, Miaolin Li, Paul Le Gros, Ian Watts, Megan Rutledge, Alan Kissell, Mark Wentworth, Gillian Wratt, Henk Visker, Jennifer Amosa and Haden McCrorie. Anne-Marie is a part-time community stroke advisor for the Stroke Foundation of New Zealand while Miaolin Li has been combating racism and is the face behind many valuable cultural projects in the local community as one of the Chinese community leaders in the region and is the coordinator for Speak Out. Shoppers encouraged to be generous and donate to Give Local
Richmond’s FreshChoice is encouraging shoppers to donate food to less fortunate Kiwis this Christmas. “Give Local” gives kind-spirited customers an easy way to donate non-perishable food items and health products to those in need. Specially-marked food collection trolleys are in place now at Richmond FreshChoice until New Year’s Day. All items collected are destined to support local charities such as Salvation Army, community Food Banks and community food collection from organisations such as the Lions Club. FreshChoice brands manager, Liz de Lange, says New Zealanders have endured some tough times recently. “There’s no doubt New Zealanders have found themselves on shaky ground again recently,” she says. “Every year we find a way to give back to our communities - and our 2016 campaign is more timely

than ever. Give Local is our way of helping and empowering others to give their local charities, who do so much for the community, a boost at this time of year. “We encourage customers to look at what they are able to afford and pop a few extra items in their trolley to give to the local charity.” In addition, FreshChoice supermarkets are also collecting for the Red Cross November Earthquake appeal at all checkouts. Collections have been kick-started by a $5000 donation by the supermarket group. Suggested items to donate to the Give Local appeal for under $5 include canned foods, pasta, tomato sauce, Weetbix, muesli, toothbrushes, toilet paper, toothpaste, soap and body wash, reduced cream and soup mix, gravy mix, jellies. Over $10 items include sunscreen, nappies, toiletries, chocolates and gift sets.

Working from Plans I heard about the great service at ColourPlus in Richmond so walked in with my new house plans with wallpaper in mind. I was very happy with the customer service and range of products with selecting feature wallpaper for the house so it was an easy choice again to get ColourPlus to help me with drapes and blinds for the new build. The team at ColourPlus were knowledgeable and had some great advice using my floor-plans, colour charts and flooring choices to narrow down options, initially from off the plan, through to selecting samples to complement our colours and floorings and importantly fit in with our build budget, finally installing them to a fantastic finish to our new home.

Just a thought... Reverend Martin Harrison, Brightwater Community Anglican Church Most of us know the song ‘All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth’. As we approach Christmas children are asked what do you want for Christmas? Some children write long lists and post them to the mythical Santa grotto at the North Pole. Have you got a wish list for Christmas? I noticed a sign the other day that said ‘I think, as you grow older, your Christmas list gets shorter because the things you want can’t be brought’. Certainly worth thinking about for a moment. I don’t think anyone ever dies wishing they had worked harder and amassed more toys in their life. Rather many wonder where the time has gone and the missed opportunities of relationships. Many studies have shown that strong social connections to family, friends, community and God, result in people living longer, more satisfying lives. So rather than racing from shop to shop this Christmas, why not ask
how you can invest in meaningful relationships? There are many ways you can do this. Act on that thought of contacting someone to see how they are. Resist the temptation to rush onto the next urgent thing and instead spend time discovering the delight from a child as they jump in a puddle or some other childlike activity. Or perhaps taking to heart the Psalmists words in the Bible ‘Be still and know that I am God’ (Psalm 46:10). Perhaps sitting, enjoying and gazing in wonder at a sunset or some other spectacular nature scene. Then, perhaps, all we will want for Christmas is to understand its true meaning, relationship. Relationship with God and relationship with others. ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him’ (John 3:16-17). Have a blessed Christmas.

The students fund-raised with a sausage sizzle and bake sale at a recent touch rugby tournament, raising $1000 which went towards items such as buckets, cleaning cloths, soap, shampoo, rubbish bags, washing powder, dish washing liquid and toilet brushes. The idea to create the starter packs for new families came from study they have been doing on migration and seemed like a practical way to help, based on advice from Red Cross. In total, 20 packs were handed over to Jettie Skerten of Red Cross at the school on Thursday. Jettie says some of them were put to good use straight away with the arrival of four new families to the Nelson region the next day. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Garin College’s year 9 and 10 students have embraced the spirit of Christmas, hand-making gifts to share with those at local schools and retirement villages. While Thursday was spent creating the gifts and packaging them, Friday saw the students head off to share them with those in new entrant primary school classes and the residents of retirement homes. Their gifts included biscuits, chocolates, truffles, Christmas crackers, decorations and origami boxes for the baking. Students also spent time with the young and elderly, helping the kids make Christmas cards and decorations and sitting and chatting with the older generation. “For the kids it’s about establishing relationships and giving back to the community,” says Garin College teacher, Tom Speers. “It’s very strongly focused on the Christian ethic of service and giving and also encouraging that sense of responsibility in kids so they become active citizens rather than recipients,” he says.
Garin College students from left, Sarah Carter, Daniel Wopereis, Telekalafi Likilika and Logan McCrae with their handmade presents, destined for local school children and retirement village residents. Photo: Jessie Johnston. “The [Christian service days] were pretty fun and chill, I went to the retirement home and I’ve been there before, they have a lot of stories to tell, it’s kind of cute,” says student Telekalafi Likilika. “It’s good to give back to the community, knowing that you’re doing stuff that will benefit someone and make their day,” says Sarah Carter. Throughout the school year, all Garin College students take
part in Christian service activities including their term one event, Slum City. The proceeds of these go to various causes, each school house supporting a child in need around the world on an ongoing basis, as well as donating to projects in the Pacific Islands. Last week, they also held a mufti day to raise funds for the children in Kaikoura after contacting the school to find out how they could help.
ADVERTORIAL
Bringing life back into focus for over 40s The need for reading glasses is a reality most people are resigned to as they get older and their near vision begins to deteriorate. But new laser vision technology is changing that reality and can mean never wearing glasses again. The Laser Blended Vision procedure was introduced to New Zealand by the team at Wellington Eye Centre, and their Specialist Ophthalmologist, Dr Andrew Logan.
With Laser Blended Vision, the range of focus in both eyes is extended, allowing the brain to merge the images and create a blend zone that is in focus for both eyes.
Dr Logan’s been pioneering groundbreaking technologies in New Zealand for the last 22 years, always looking for the absolute best solutions for vision correction.
The procedure is performed with one of the most advanced and sophisticated LASIK laser eye surgery systems available anywhere in the world, something that reflects Dr Logan’s ‘no compromise’ approach to both his patients and his profession.
The introduction of Laser Blended Vision has already proved lifechanging for many as it enables more people to enjoy excellent distance and near vision after laser eye surgery. “Traditional technologies have meant compromising the long distance vision in one eye to improve near vision. However, this can sometimes leave people with a blurry intermediate zone as the brain struggles to fuse the two images together”, says Dr Logan.
“Each one of the procedures we provide offers its own advantages. What’s exciting about Laser Blended Vision is its ability to correct both near and far-sightedness effectively for all patients who need, or are expected to need, reading glasses”, says Dr Logan. “96% of our patients aged between 40 and 70 never need to wear glasses at all.”
Working with Dr Logan to achieve these results is a team of skilled and experienced staff who are dedicated to providing information, answering questions, and ensuring patients are supported throughout the entire process. Suitability assessments can be performed by your local optometrist, while the actual procedure takes place at Dr Logan’s Wellington surgery. Nelson patients are offered free boutique hotel accommodation in Wellington for themselves and their partner, organised and paid for by the Eye Centre. The procedure itself is painless and only takes a few minutes, and most patients are thrilled to report they’re feeling great at the follow-up appointment the next day. Complimentary follow-up care continues with your local optometrist for a year afterwards to help patients adapt to their new vision and to ensure it’s an entirely positive experience. Contact the team to find out whether laser eye surgery is a suitable option for you.
Freedom in the blink of an eye Forget all about needing glasses to read or see what’s happening in the distance, with Laser Blended Vision – one of the most advanced laser technologies available. Introduced to New Zealand by the Wellington Eye Centre, it could be the vision solution that you’ve been looking for.
Call now to discuss with our team if Laser Blended Vision is right for you

Richmond Community Christmas Lunch 2016
Older Youth, Going deeper
Christmas is supposed to be a time of fun, family, friends and good food. For a lot of us, it is also a source of stress as we cope with the busyness of the season.
Sunday 11 December 5–7 pm Church on the Hill hall Bring your questions for discussion Pizza provided
For some of us it’s even harder as the atmosphere and the advertising makes us realise what we haven’t got – whether that’s people to celebrate with or money to afford a decent meal. This is the motivation behind the Richmond Community Christmas lunch. For the fourth year running, a large team of volunteers is putting on this event with the help of many supporters. The aim is to provide a celebration of Christmas over a meal with good company. All are welcome.

What do Kaikoura earthquakes, hugs for strangers and the Christian Christmas story all have in common?
Thursday 5 January 10 am Thursday 12 January 10 am Thursday 19 January 10 am Thursday 26 January 10 am All welcome
In the Christian Christmas story everything kicks off after an innkeeper isn’t too busy to deal with some random strangers but instead finds shelter for the young couple expecting a baby. After the Kaikoura earthquake, as after the Canterbury and Seddon quakes, people have reached out in a myriad of ways to help their fellow New Zealanders in their time of need. In a shop in Nelson the other day, a stranger offered a hug to a person who was having a bad day. It can be all too easy to get caught up in the busyness of Christmas and holiday preparation. Perhaps this year we can slow down to notice the stranger that could do with our help. It might be a small gift but it can make the world a different place.

Special woodworkers recognised by Menzshed A group of special needs woodworkers have mastered making tool boxes, table lamps and book cases and next year they are aiming to design and build custommade downhill racers to compete in the Nelson Trolley Derby. The Nelson-Tasman special needs group have been taking wood working projects at the Menzshed Waimea for the past four to five years and have just completed their last project for the year. They were awarded certificates for their achievements by Menzshed Waimea coordinator Alan Kissell at a special end of year function at the Menzshed premises at Richmond Park on Tuesday and Alan says he’s thrilled with their progress. “The extent that these guys have improved in basic woodworking skills over the past three years is incredible,” Alan says. “ That, and their dedication to the tasks at hand, is truly inspirational - this special needs group is a lot of fun and a pleasure to be involved with.” However, Alan says it’s disappointing that “these guys do not presently have an opportunity to progress their skills outside the Menzshed. I have to say, some of them would definitely be a great asset to any commercial organisation as a very loyal employee.” Alan says the group has undertaken projects over the last year ranging from tool boxes, shaver stands, cutlery caddies, table lamps, and book cases. The group has been well supported by the region’s businesses and organisations including Bunnings Warehouse, Mitre 10, SuperCheap Auto, Briscoes and “private individuals who have given this group so much in product or their time”.
Special needs woodworkers and volunteers and teachers at the Menzshed Waimea. “It has been really appreciated, and these projects could not have been undertaken without the generous support. For this, we all sincerely thank you.” Alan says the group is already looking forward to next year’s
project to design and build a downhill racer to hopefully compete in the Nelson Trolley Derby. And there are enough petrolheads at the Menzshed to help the group develop a high-speed
racer. “The depth of motorsport technical knowledge and talent available through the Menz Shed is nothing to be sneezed at,” he says. “There may even be a budding
Chris Amon among our special needs group so the end result could be quite competitive – they certainly are keen enough.” The presentation was attended by the special needs group and volunteers from the Menzshed.

Cricket crown up for grabs Jacob Page Sports Editor

Waimea Toi Toi and StokeNayland will face each other to crown club cricket’s 110-over champion at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Waimea Toi Toi secured a place in the final with a week to spare, while rain on Saturday washed away Nelson College’s chance of pipping Stoke-Nayland for the other berth after all club cricket was abandoned and the points shared. Waimea Toi Toi will go in as favourites as they are undefeated in the competition. They have also scored the most runs in the competition and conceded the least. The teams have met once before, with Waimea Toi Toi winning by one run after defending 161 thanks to four for 28 from opening bowler Jon Routhan. Their other match was rained out.
Waimea Toi Toi batsman Douglas Seward looks to play a cut. Waimea are unbeaten heading into the 110-over final against Stoke-Nayland this Saturday. Photo: Barry Whittnall/Shuttersport. However, it’s not all one-way traffic when individual player statistics are looked at. Stoke-Nayland’s hard-hitting
allrounder, Dylan Eginton, has the second most runs in the competition with 193, just five runs behind leader Tom Cross
from Wanderers. Dylan also has the most sixes in the competition with seven. Waimea Toi Toi have two
batsmen inside the top 10, with Tom Ingham fourth on 180 runs and Jon in fifth on 165. Stoke-Nayland’s Ryan Edwards sits atop the bowling ranks in club cricket so far. He’s taken 15 wickets at an average of just over seven and a strike rate of 20 balls per wicket. Team mate and right arm seamer Brad Duncan sits fourth with 12 wickets and Dylan eighth with 10 wickets. Waimea Toi Toi’s lead seamer Amit Dhiman is the second best wicket taker in the competition with 14 wickets at a strike rate of 19 balls per wicket. Tim O’Neill sits fifth with 10 wickets. Both teams have enough Nelson rep players to ensure either team can produce a performance capable of securing some silverware before the Christmas break. With several rounds abandoned due to rain, it’s expected the pitch will still have some life for the seam bowlers to exploit as large totals have been hard to come by this year.

Waimea Old Boys look long term Jacob Page New Waimea Old Boys club manager, Wayne Oldham believes the rugby future is bright for the men in red and white. The club has gone through a number of changes during the off season with a new constitution adopted, a new board established to drive the club forward, the merge of junior and senior rugby into one entity and a new man leading the way. Previous president Duane Whiting
has stepped down but will remain on the governing board. Former 2IC Wayne has stepped up to the head role as club manager while Jono Phillips has come on board as rugby manager to improve pathways for players, coaches and the club in general. A new Waimea Old Boys app for smartphones and iPads is set to be launched before Christmas and Wayne hopes it will become a one-stop shop for everything clubrelated, from news to trainings to cancellations.

Mark Milne has also remained as senior coach while Scott McKenzie will take charge of the Senior Bs. Steve Curtis will stay with the women’s team. Wayne admitted the club was not as prepared as it should have been for the 2015 season which showed in the high player turnover at senior level. “The board will look after governance and finances for the club... We need to come together as one club and having the same conversations,” Wayne says. “Jono’s role is from junior right through to senior so the club needed to reflect that.” Wayne thanked Duane for his efforts and commitment as president and was thankful to have him on the new board. “Duane is still passionate about the club and him wanting to be on the board works for both sides.. He’s done an awesome job.” Wayne says he wants the club to make the most of their assets and ensure they become more selfsustainable and less reliant on the charity dollar. “Everyone is really excited about where things are going and we are working hard behind the scenes to ensure that things on and off the field improve for Waimea Old Boys.”

Two medals for Waimea College track cyclist Jacob Page Waimea College track cyclist Shaane Fulton exceeded her own expectations of her first taste of international competition by winning a silver and bronze medal at the Oceania Track Cycling Championships in Melbourne at the weekend. Shaane won a silver in the junior team sprint to start her campaign, then earned a bronze medal in the Under-19 women’s individual sprint. “The silver was exciting because it was my first international medal but the bronze was in an event that I have aimed for. Shaane says most of the first-timers in the Kiwi team were told not to set high expectations for Melbourne, so two medals was a boost in confidence. “We got told before the start of racing to go out there and learn as much as you can and you’ll start to seeing the results at Nationals. Shaane had been aiming for a top five finish in the Under-19 women’s sprint. “I had a close semi-final but made some mistakes but I gained confidence for the bronze medal ride. The national track championships will be held in Invercargill in February. Until then she will continue her strength and race training around Nelson while looking forward to the completion of the Saxton Velodrome.

He says he is looking forward to the Giants campaign and showing how he has improved during his time with the Breakers. “I’m 21 years old – I’m trying to get better at everything. The attention to detail [in the ANBL] is the big thing that gets me. “The scouting and preparation is a big step up.” He says being a key figure for the Giants next year is something he wants. “I think I’ll relish that opportunity, to be honest with you. “I got given a chance last year and I enjoyed having the ability to show what I can do.
Nelson Giants and Breakers guard Finn Delany says he will relish the burden of expectation when he returns to the franchise in 2017. The 21-year-old Nelson College old boy is with the Breakers for the current ANBL season and is enjoying seeing increased minutes on court. “I don’t think I was hardly on court at all last year, so it’s been fun to get extended minutes when people have been injured and to try to learn.” Finn was arguably the Giants’ most productive player last season and, by his own admission, “had
“I know my time with the Breakers will put me in the spotlight and I’m fine with that.” Finn says the departure of coach Tim Fanning for an assistant coaching role in Israel was tough but a logical decision for his former coach. “I don’t think people understand how big of an opportunity him going to Maccabi Tel Aviv is. “That’s a top five club in the world outside of the NBA.” Finn says he has kept in touch with the local players, including captain Sam Dempster, and had every belief a quality coach would be found in the near future.”

Jacob Page New world champion singles lawn bowler Shannon McIlroy will play in the Nelson Centre Pairs tournament this weekend for his Stoke Bowling Club, less than a week after his breakthrough win in Christchurch. The Stoke Club had plenty to celebrate with both Shannon and former member Ali Forsyth claiming gold medals at the World Championships. Stoke Bowling .co.nz Club president John Marsden says the club committee was meeting on Monday night to discuss a potential celebration for Shannon when he returns.

“Shannon’s victory is just amazing,” John says. “We see him on the greens a lot and I’m sure his victory will do a lot for our club and bowls in general here in Nelson." Shannon made good on years of potential by winning the blue riband event, the men's singles 21-17 over Canada's Ryan Bester, while Ali skipped the men’s fours to a 23-4 demolition of Australia. "It's pretty surreal right now - growing up playing bowls, it's what dreams are made of," Shannon says. "After 25 years in the game, I think all those days wagging school and going down

"I was getting hot with my jacket on but the one time I took it off this week I started playing rubbish. To hold such a quality team to such few shots is the stuff you dream about and I can't believe it's happened to be fair." Podium finish for Searles M A SP O R T ROV E R PRESIDENT RAIDER15/38 150 ST Simon Bloomberg
The Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman 70.3 Taupo on Saturday represented two contrasting challenges for Ruby Bay couple Rob and Eileen Searle. For Eileen, who is one of the best long distance age group triathletes in the country, the 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21.1km run was business as usual. And it was no surprise that she won her the W55-59 race in a super-fast 5hr 19min 8sec, over 20 minutes clear of second-placed Sue McMaster. “I felt good in the swim and on the bike and I was flying when I started the run and was really comfortable on the first 10km but just got a bit tired on the second lap,” Eileen says. “I managed to stay with the same woman for the whole 1.9km swim and I overtook her on the bike section on the first set of hills but she
later went past me on the flat, windy section going out. “I was happy with the thought I was second off the bike, although it was hard to monitor where everyone was placed in the run. When I crossed the finish line the commentator told me that I was first in my age group so I was really happy.” However, the Taupo 70.3 Ironman represented a big step up Rob who was returning to racing after a serious training injury suffered in April this year. Rob was airlifted to Nelson Hospital after being hit by a car while riding his bike and knocked unconscious for 10 minutes. Rob lost his sense of balance and spent eight weeks “being very disorientated” following a five day stay in hospital. He also suffered from extreme fatigue and sensory overload as he battled to “relearn to filter out background audio and visual stimuli.
But the results of eight months of dedicated training, which started off with a few shorts walks, paid dividends on Saturday when Rob finished second in the M50-54 age group and 64th overall in 4hr 45min 32sec. Rob says his swim was “about four to five minutes slower than I could have done if I was swim fit” but he cycled and ran strongly despite nerve damage from the accident causing numbness in his lower left leg and foot on the run. “When I crossed the line, I heard I was second in my age group and was amazed. I am extremely pleased to have been able just to compete in the event and very happy to have done a respectable time - I was happy and relieved to have been able to have finish.” Rob says Eileen played a key role in his recovery, providing constant support and an incentive to get back on his bike and return

hOUSe wanted Family of 5 looking for a 4 or 3 bedroom home with sleepout or space for a cabin. We are relocating to Nelson for work reasons and need to find a home by mid to late January 2017. We need a fully fenced property as we have one black lab dog whom is well behaved and has references. Anywhere considered at this stage but would prefer semi-rural. Kids ages are 8, 10 and 18 so not worried about being close to water. We are very keen gardeners and paint/decorate for a living so we see ourselves as an asset to any property. Please contact Hayden or Hazel on 021 063 3571 or 037 533 311 anytime. Thank you.
