Wine and food fest is back The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival is returning after an “overwhelming” response from the public encouraged the Rotary Club of Richmond to revive their iconic fundraising event. Rotary had organised the festival nine times raising around $230,000 for charities, schools and volunteer organisations

around the district. The club canned the festival last year so it could reassess its future after a making a loss in 2012 but now it’s back with the 10th edition to be held at the same venue at Middle-Earth Vineyard on Bryant Rd in Brightwater SEE PAGE 2

More big events to be local More of the region’s big events are eyeing up Saxton Stadium after the closure of two earthquake prone venues in Nelson city has left event organisers scrambling to secure alternative locations. The city’s main events venue, the Trafalgar Centre, was closed by Nelson City Council in early December due to a high chance of loss of life should a moderate earthquake occur while it was in use. The Nelson School of Music has since suffered a similar fate, closing to public use until

earthquake-strengthening work has been completed. With both venues out of action, full calendars of pre booked events are now out in the cold and that’s putting pressure on other locations. Stu Dalton, Theatre Royal marketing and box office manager, says they’ve already come to the rescue of two events but that he doubted many more would be so lucky. “Because we have such a high community usage, we are quite full and we only have a few dates available. Luckily for the pro-

Trafalgar Centre. “We’re all of a sudden faced with a whole lot of bookings that are foreign to us. We’re working really hard on how this can work.” Two of those events currently in talks with the council over moving their events to the stadium are the Canterbury Tactix netball team and the Fight 4 Victory charity boxing event. The Tactix were booked in for an ANZ Championship SEE PAGE 2

Brightwater wine and food fest is back FROM PAGE 1 on Sunday February 16. “The public response has been overwhelming,” member of the festival organising committee Kevin Gear says. “Everyone has been asking ‘why it wasn’t held last year’ and ‘when will it be on again’ so that encouraged us to go ahead. “It’s also been a wonderful fundraiser for the community. Rotary has raised around $230,000 from the festival and spread it around the community so we wanted to do that as well.” Money raised from this year’s festival will go to Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, Wanderers Sports Club, Brightwater Rural Fire Force and the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade. However, Kevin and organising committee chairman Pete Glue say they needed to change the focus of the festival to make it

a success. Pete says the crowds stayed away in 2012 because people were reluctant to pay $50 for a ticket so the emphasis this year is providing quality local wine, beer, food and entertainment at affordable prices. “The public have told us to go back to the basics so we have gone for all local entertainment and put the ticket prices back to $15 which is what they were three years ago,” Pete says. Kevin says the response to the back to basics approach has been “fantastic” with the public, stall holders and sponsors all keen to support the festival. He says Rotary is also in debt to the landowner Rob Grey and Middle-Earth’s managers Ryan and Kylie O’Connell for allowing the festival to be held at the vineyard. “We have a whole lot of new sponsors and we’ve also had good support from the region’s wine, craft beer and food community - there’s going to be at least 40 stalls.”

The festival’s sponsors are Fertilizer NZ Ltd, Goldpine, Colourplus, Knapps Lawyers, Middle-Earth Winery and Nelson More FM. Kevin says the committee is delighted with line up of entertainers that includes the Paul Madsen’s Superstar Show, The Saints, Kramit, Antoni Neal, The Neal Brothers x Three, Timeless, Urban and the winners of More FM’s Who’s Got Talent contest. Buses will be running to and from the festival from Nelson, Stoke and Richmond. Tickets to the the Brightwater Wine and Food Festival cost $15 and can be purchased from Colourplus Nelson, Colourplus Richmond, Haven Realty offices in Nelson and Richmond, Everyman Records in Nelson, Village Cycles in Richmond, Avanti Plus Richmond, Specsavers in the Richmond Mall and the Brightwater Mobil Garage. Gate sales will cost $20.

Events look at Saxton Stadium FROM PAGE 1 clash against the Central Pulse. Netball Mainland CEO Brigit Hearn, who was in Nelson yesterday to attend a meeting with the council, says she was hopeful Nelson would still host the game. “We are very keen and eager to work collaboratively with the council in terms of making that happen and Saxton is an option we are exploring.” Paul Hampden, one of the organisers of the Fight 4 Victory boxing event says they are still looking at alternative venues for it, along with the Joseph Parker fight that was originally scheduled for late March. “We had a date for end of March but the closure makes it difficult to stick to that date. But we still feel positive that it will go ahead.”

Moutere Hills back in use The Moutere Hills Community Centre is almost good as new after being devastated by two fires last year and the community is hoping that it will be bigger and better than ever with plans to add a new fitness centre to the facility. A $804,000 rebuild of the eightyear-old centre is almost completed after a fire ravaged the building on April 12 last year. It was the second time in a year that the Tasman District Council-owned centre had been hit by fire after a blaze caused extensive damage in January. But now, after four months of hard work by contractors IMB and the community, the centre is almost fully rebuilt and centre manager Katrina McLean says they can’t wait for it to re-open. The centre has already been used for a wedding on December 28 and will be ready to accommodate the last two weeks of the community’s school holiday programme starting on January 20. “Contractors have worked really hard to finish the Woollaston Estate Function Room, Hyatt Room, kitchen, bar, community room, office and foyer,” Katrina says. “We had a wedding there after Christmas and it was so exciting - it was nice to see that the end was in sight.” Katrina says the office staff were moving back into the centre last week after being based

The whole community has been really supportive.” Contractors are presently working on the NBS Sports Hall which is the final stage of the rebuild and due to be completed by the end of February. Katrina says the rebuild also featured a number of upgrades including installing sound insulation and air conditioning and extending the office thanks to support from the Canterbury Community Trust, Sarau Trust, Tasman District Council and the Moutere community. The council’s property manager Jim Frater says they are delighted with the rebuild’s progress which was paid for by insurance cover for the centre. Although the fires were caused

by faulty electrical components and “weren’t anyone’s fault”, Katrina says contractors have been taking special care to check the new wiring. A downlight exploded and ignited building paper in January and a faulty switch caused the April fire. “It was just really bad luck with two faulty electrical components but the electricians and electrical inspectors are still double checking everything.” Katrina says plans were underway to add a fitness centre to the facility with public submissions being considered by the council. “We have had good feedback from the community on it. The next step is the submissions hearing this Friday.” The first big event for the newlook centre will be the Sarau Festival on February 2.

NEWS in brief

SPENDING STRONG AGAIN: Nelson enjoyed a 5.9 per cent growth in spending for the month of December, compared with the year before according to the latest figures released by eftpos provider Paymark. The figures showed the amount of money spent through the network in the month was $102.9 million POLICE HAND OUT CHOCOLATE: Drivers are being handed free chocolate from police in an effort to raise awareness about driving safely. Police across Tasman District launched a road policing operation targeting travellers on the State Highways last week. Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews says police would be conducting high visibility patrols and checkpoints on a range of State Highways from Kaikoura to Haast. As an incentive to take a break officers will be handing out chocolate bars to drivers. All drivers stopped can also expect to be breath tested and have their licence checked. The 4kmh speed tolerance is also being enforced. CHARITY HANGI: A hangi fundraiser for Ranui House in Christchurch will be held at Wanderers clubrooms in Brightwater on January 25 at 5pm. Tickets are available from Brightwater Motors.

A century of motoring at the lake Phillip Rollo Reporter

The distance from Nelson to Lake Rotoiti is 88.4km and according to Google Maps it takes drivers about 117 minutes to make the journey. But in 1913 when Mr and Mrs C H Coote drove their Model T Ford to the lake it took the entire day, which probably highlights how difficult the very first car ride was. Many tyres were changed and some hills were negotiated in reverse too. Photos of the historic trip have been kept and show a horse pulling the Ford through the Motupiko River, and this weekend’s annual St Arnaud Festival the local history group will be commemorating 100 years of motoring to the lake. “One of our members is a direct descendant of the people that drove the first car,” says history group member Chris Richards. “It just seems an appropriate time to recognize what was a very difficult journey.” The history group has invited

Boaties ‘should be’ licenced Boaties should have to get a licence before taking to the water says the region’s harbour master, or he warns we’re likely to see a death on our waters. Dave Duncan says “stupid decisions” are putting people’s lives at risk in Nelson and he’d be in favour of a licencing system requiring skippers to undergo a simple course and test before they’re allowed to take to the water. “My 18 year old son could go and buy himself a 60 foot launch without any official or formal training and take it to Wellington and we see that happening and some people are just getting back by the grace of God and luck.”

So far this summer Dave says he and his staff have been called several times to rescue stranded boaties and while there’s been an improvement in the number of people wearing lifejackets there is still the “careless few” that concern him. “Once again I think we’ve been very lucky we haven’t had a fatality this year, we’ve had people rescued in stupid situations and saved only by their lifejackets or good fortune of other boaties being around.” He believes a “simple course” aimed at personal safety and boat handling would be a good idea but doubts it will take off due to the cost of setting it up and the considera-

Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz ble resources that would be needed to get it started. He says there are boat safety courses available in Nelson and urges locals to seek one out. “The water is a pioneer still, it’s a place people can go for adventure but we just want them to be safe in their adventures.” Fisherman Dave Younghusband who was at the marina on Saturday, says he supports the idea of boaties taking a course

or obtaining a licence. “There are a lot of idiots out there and if you break down on the road you’re on land and it’s okay but if you break down out there you don’t have a lot of help if you don’t know what you’re doing.” Shaun Kingston, another fisherman at the marina on Saturday, hinted that a licence would be a good idea, but the logistics and cost might rule that out. “I’ve actually been looking into doing a course just in case something goes wrong,” he says. “But people scrape up enough money to buy a boat and spending more money to go through a course would probably put people off.”

Airport sets new record

People flying to and from Nelson have set a new record during December, with more than 70,000 taking off or landing at the region’s airport. Nelson Airport Ltd announced that December 2013 was a record month, for 71,523 passengers, up more than 4000 on the same month the year before. The airport’s chief executive Kaye McNabb says annual passenger numbers now eclipse those of Rotorua, Blenheim and Hamilton combined. “Passenger numbers are a good barometer of the performance of the local economy so it’s pleasing to be able to report such great results this month,” she says. “With the growing confidence in New Zealand’s economic performance the airport company is expecting the growth to continue and more records to be broken over the coming year. Kaye says the airport was “bursting at the seams” during the month and commended the work of the airlines and Nelson Tasman Tourism in helping bring people to the region.

Tourism turnaround a ‘big sigh of relief’

The sun is shining, the weather is sweet, and now is the perfect time to come stay in Nelson. That is the cry of Motel Association branch administration officer John Gilbertson who is “hoping like hell” bookings will pick back up after an extremely busy period between Christmas and the start of the New Year. Ever since the Christchurch earthquake and a global recession, the visitor numbers

from Canterbury – Nelson’s biggest visitor market – have dropped considerably. This year could be the turning point though, with more coming back, and Nelson Tasman Tourism CEO Lynda Keene says there was an “air of optimism” with an influx of international visitors to the region as well. “The past three summers have been really tough but that tide is turning a wee bit now regarding our UK visitors who are coming

back, the US, Japanese, Indian and from China as well,” she says. “There’s a big sigh of relief. We needed this to be a really good summer and it’s certainly performing.” But John believes some guests haven’t stayed long enough and commented that there are 190 rooms within the association that are still waiting to be snapped up this week. “The motels up until the fourth and fifth of January, which was the statu-

tory holiday period, most of them were extremely busy. However, as is the normal case, that drops off and this year we’ve seen quite a quick drop off in people staying,” he says. “Usually we get a second wave of people about now but it’ll be interesting to see whether that happens to the same extent.” With the forecast now suggesting finer weather, John is hoping it will spark an increase in visitors.

Museum open again after strengthening The museum’s research facility reopened to the public yesterday, almost a year to the week that it was forced to close due to earthquake risk. The Nelson Provincial Museum’s building in Isel Park, Stoke failed earthquake testing last year due to two mezzanine floors at either end of the building, which were used to store parts of its collection. One of the mezzanines has been strengthened with steel braces and the other has been cleared of the filing cabinets that were held there. Other work in the building has seen braces added as well as an upgrade of the fire alarm system and electrics. Museum chief executive Peter Millward says in a funny way the floods that threatened parts of the collection and earthquake risk has meant the collection

is now safer than it has ever been. “I can say, hand on heart, that the collection has never been as well protected as it is right now and I guess that’s the up side of this whole situation.” The building will reopen today after it was granted a certificate of public use before Christmas. Peter says people visiting the building won’t notice too much of a difference unless they walk around the back of the building. The work has also meant a big reshuffle of the collection in the building and “countless” staff hours spent on the work during the past year. The work was completed for less than $150,000 and the building now has an earthquake rating of 40 per cent. The hours of the research facility are from 12.30-4.30pm from Tuesday to Friday.

Mini raffle tally surpasses $75,000 Phillip Rollo

When the “Wakefield caffeine crew” originally thought of restoring a Mini and raffling it off for charity, it was because another group had topped their tally at the Relay for Life, raising $6000 for the Cancer Society. With just two weeks left in their own raffle mission across the region, the group of four friends behind the BMG Mini Project have already surpassed the $75,000

Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz mark by selling an impressive 7500 tickets. The winner of the raffle, which will be drawn on January 30, will get the fully restored 1975 Morris Mini Mk 3, while there

are other prizes on offer including a whopping $18,000 worth of travel from House of Travel. Bob Croy says the Mini has travelled right across the region to numerous events in the hope of selling as many raffles as possible. “We started out to make $10,000 and now we’ve got $75,000 in the bank,” he says. “We’re trying to do a real big push

over the next few weeks and we’re going to do a big push in camping grounds and we’re going to go to Pohara after the show on Saturday.” Raffle tickets are selling for $10 each and they can be purchased from Bowater Motor Group or by finding the travelling Mini. The Mini will be in the Richmond Mall until Friday.

The cost is $5 per car with public entry to the show by gold coin donation. Geoff says food carts will be on site for the show but he also encouraged car owners to bring a picnic. The venue will be open to car owners from 9.30am with public viewing from 11am to 3pm.

Top chef turns up in the kitchen What beats being waited on hand and foot by one of Nelson’s best chefs? When your meal is on the house of course. Mike Jukes won a competition to have a meal prepared especially for him by renowned chef Stu Cliffin from Relish Waterfront Dining. The competition, organised by Brightwater Vineyards, saw Mike dining in style on Saturday night with his best friends, who all got to experience the five course meal with him. With a tailored menu and Brightwater Vineyards wine for the evening matched to each course, Mike says the night was “absolutely fabulous.” “It was an amazing night, you couldn’t ask for more really. Being able to sit down and have a

night with really good friends and not have to choose the meals or the wine, no worries, it was all really fantastic.” Mike says he entered the competition after sampling a Brightwater Vineyards wine at the supermarket. “I’d gone in to buy a bottle of wine and tasted it, really liked it and so I bought a bottle. I noticed the competition and entered it. The funny thing was at the time I entered there was a similar experience on Grabone and we were all saying how neat that would be. I said ‘don’t worry guys, I’m going to win this competition’ and I did.” Gary Neale of Brightwater Vineyards says he was “so pleased” that Mike enjoyed the evening and that his competition has proven very popular.

r e p ! e Su m i t r e m m u S “Chairs.”

This week I’d like to throw a bouquet to the people of the Nelson region and the visitors who have been here over the holiday season. For the police, this has been a fantastic holiday season. I know if you’ve been camping you may have a slightly different perspective given the inclement weather we’ve had. However, the people out socialising and celebrating have, on the whole, been extremely well behaved and we have had very few serious issues to deal with. What my staff are seeing is a more responsible approach to alcohol consumption and the end result of that is less disorder, fewer victims and safer roads. We’ve worked closely with those in the hospitality business and in my view the way licensees are running their businesses is also having a very positive impact for the wider community. Police officers are now issuing instant infringement notices for breaches of the liquor ban and young people should take note that we will also issue an infringement notice to anyone caught using fake ID. That will cost $250 - an expensive night out! Out on the roads, we’ve had no serious road crashes over the holiday period and a fairly small number of people who were found to be driving with excess breath alcohol. With the likely reduction in the acceptable alcohol level for driver coming up we will be doing some more work in the months ahead to educate drivers. Thanks everyone for contributing to the start of a safe and happy New Year in Nelson Bays.

Service could be better: In reference to the txt ‘ letter’, printed on Jan 8, headed “Customer Service could be better”, I would have to agree wholeheartedly with the writer’s comments. Too often one walks into some Nelson area shops, and is ignored by staff. This is not just coffee shops etc but quite a few retailers in general. Surely the owners must realise that business should (and can) be better—and take steps to train staff? Maybe even use the services of professional “mystery shoppers” to show where service could be improved—and therefore profits! It’s not that hard. David, Richmond, Nelson.

Cricket volunteers: As one of the volunteers (ex Rugby World Cup) at last weeks NZ v West Indies inaugural International Cricket Match at Saxton Oval, I would like to have recognised the outstanding efforts put in by Event Manager Neville Male and his loyal volunteers from Rugby World Cup who once again offered their time , this time for cricket. Neville’s experienced through his involvement in every super rugby game in Nelson since the establishment of super rugby in 1996, with his Nelson Spectator Services team for RWC 2011 being highly commended by RWC Officials as one of the most efficient throughout the tournament. Last weekend over 40 ex RWC volunteers assisted at the cricket International. For a first ever event at Saxton Oval it went exceptionally well with very few “hiccups”. A great learning curve for what’s to come in 2015 (that’s only next year). Well done Nelson, we can only get better and when it all happens in 2015, we will be ready. Errol Millar, Nelson.

Richmond marine engineer, Jason King, has found a novel way to combine two of his favourite hobbies, fishing and biking. Jason and his workmate at Reliance Engineering in Port Nelson, Sam Guo, have designed and built two pedal-powered fishing boats and they are proving to be incredibly successful. Not only are the boats super-stable and cheap to run, they are quiet and that means they are perfect to catching wary snapper. “We go all over the place with them,” Jason says. “We mostly fish here off Tahuna but we’ve also been to French Pass, Kaiteriteri and even the West Coast. “When we were fishing on the West Coast it was so rough

people were out surfing but we were fine which shows how stable the boats are. On a bad day we might get a wet backside but that’s all. “We’re catching heaps. I don’t know what it is but they are quiet which doesn’t scare the fish “I’ve got a five metre fizz boat but I leave it behind and use this now. It’s cheaper to run and I’m catching more fish on it.” Sam says the twin-hulled boats are made of aluminium and take about 100 hours to build. They only weigh 40 kilograms and include a seat, two rod holders, a fish finder and a

mount for a small outboard motor which they sometimes use for longer fishing trips. Sam says the pedals and chain drive are from old recycled bike parts and are connected to the propeller through a drive shaft from an old outboard motor. “You have to get the ratio right,” Sam says. “It takes one revolution of the pedals to spin the prop seven times - it can cruise at 7.5 kilometres an hour.” Jason says the two boats are the mark three and four versions and they are thinking about marketing their unique design. “We might put one on TradeMe and see what happens. There could be a market for them, who knows?”

Young rodeo rider Harrison Buckland of Upper Moutere will be competing in the steer riding at the Richmond Rodeo this Saturday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Eight seconds is not long but this Saturday at the Richmond A and P Showgrounds it will seem like an eternity for Upper Moutere parents Simon and Bobbye Buckland. That’s because they will be watching their 12-year-son Harrison jump on an angry steer and then try to hang on for dear life to complete the magic eight second ride at the Richmond Rodeo. Although Harrison has been riding steers at rodeos for four years, Bobbye admits she gets nervous everytime her son dons his cowboy hat, chaps and safety vest and strides up to the mounting pen. “I do get horribly nervous, I can’t help it,” Bobbye says. “But he loves doing it so we can’t stop him.” However, Bobbye and Simon shouldn’t be surprised that Harrison is a keen rodeo rider after being raised in the heart of cowboy country in

Texas. It is also in Harrison’s genes with his grandfather riding bulls around the Texas rodeo circuit and his great grandfather being a rodeo clown. Bobbye, who is from the Lone Star state, was also a pretty handy calf roper although didn’t compete in rodeos. Harrison has been riding in rodeos since he was three starting with sheep and calf riding in Texas before moving to New Zealand with his family in 2006 and graduating to steers. “I just do it for fun,” Harrison says. “It’s really cool and exciting. My aim is to last the eight seconds - I’ve stayed on for six so far. And then I want to step up to second division bulls.” Harrison will be in good company on Saturday with some of the country’s top cowboys and cowgirls entered in the Richmond Rodeo. Richmond

Teen agricultural comp Calling all young farmers, the TeenAg competition has arrived. TeenAg, an agricultural skills based contest that caters for all, will take place in Murchison next month. Entry is now open to youth, whether you are a teenager that has grown up on a sheep farm right through to someone who’s barely stepped foot on a farm before. The event is run by New Zealand Young Farmers (NZYF) and is modelled off the ANZ Young Farmer Contest. Students compete in teams of two to complete a range of fun and educational modules that are based on real life scenarios.

Runners get ready to roast Runners - get ready to roast. As part of the Summer Pub Run series, Waimea Harriers are set to host their annual Wakefield Roaster. The 10km race is held annually and this year’s event is set to happen this Saturday. The course will see both runners and walkers travel up part of 88 Valley, Totara View - known as a gutbuster - down Treeton Place and through the Village to finish at Faulkners Bush. Now somewhat of a tradition, because the weather gods usually turn on a hot day the event has earned it’s name “roaster”, but it could also have something to do with the fact that there are roast chickens as spot prizes too. Entry is now open for this event and all are welcome. Entry cost $5 and both walkers and runners can enter. Walkers will start at 3.45pm and runners at 4pm. For more information visit www.waimeaharriersnelson.org.nz.

Got a story?

Email your Focus on Wakefield story ideas or photos to janina@waimeaweekly.co.nz. Deadline for the next issue is February 14.

The modules educate a variety of agricultural practices and are designed to test knowledge in a competitive and fun format. The top seven teams on the day progress through to the ‘Race-Off ’ where they will battle it out to complete a sequence of activities in an agriculturally themed obstacle course. Entry for the Tasman leg of the competition is open for teams of two people aged 14 to 18, with the chance to compete at the grand final TeenAg competition in Christchurch up for grabs. TeenAg will be held Saturday February 15 at the Murchison A&P Showgrounds. Enter your team at www.teenag.co.nz.

• When Peter and I go back to our garden the first priority is a walk around the garden. Sometimes it is a hasty walk. This time, I was best pleased with what I saw. My mulching programme is working well. The areas that have been mulched are coping well with my absence, while other parts of the garden are feeling the effects of the high Marlborough temperatures. This is particularly so with the new garden that I am making. Some areas have been mulched, others not, and it is quite evident which plants are happy, against those that are not. So every time we go home, a little more attention is made towards the unhappy lot. • The garden area that is receiving treatment is given a thorough soaking for two hours, and may I say it really enjoys that. This makes weeding a lot easier too. No, I don’t get bogged down in wet soil, because I only do a small patch at a time. [Maturity has taught me to pace myself!] • If the weeds are young and not the offensive kind, like couch or clover, and if they are not setting seed, they are left to decompose under the new mulch. Next comes wads of very wet newspaper, which has been soaking in an old copper for two hours, kept for just that purpose. And here is where the Waimea Weekly comes in handy again. I don’t spread the pages out in order to cover the soil more quickly. Oh no! All 30 odd pages are dropped in one place with heaps

more paper overlapping the edges. Hopefully there is no air space for cheeky weeds to attempt to grow! • Next comes the compost, spread to completely cover the newspaper. But, spaces must be provided around the base of all the plants to enable them to breathe. They don’t like being claustrophobic. • Now it is time to mow the lawn, and all of the lawn clippings should be spread to cover the compost. Last of all, you walk away and have a look in a week’s time. You will be pleased with your efforts. • All this seems a lot of work, but it isn’t, because the trick is to do a small area at a time, Which leaves heaps of time for golf, cafe-ing picnics, swimming, shopping, reading, or sitting in the garden in the evenings with a glass of wine at hand, and surveying a splendid result. • I was asked recently what would be a suitable shrub to replace a rose that was unhappy in too much shade. A brunsfelsia named White Caps would be a good idea. It is quite happy in a shady spot and is flowering now with fragrant trumpet shaped flowers. On the other hand if the situation is protected from frost, what could be nicer than a kalmia with unusual pink icing sugar shaped star flowers? • I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas, Jill.

Super season for new 2NZ

Slowly, year by year, things just keep getting better for Ian Burson. Nelson’s top super saloon driver went into the weekend’s New Zealand Championship as 3NZ, and thanks to some late gains in the final heat, the “baby faced assassin” left Auckland as 2NZ. Christchurch’s Mark Osborne was too good yet again and successfully defended his title to be named 1NZ, with Napier’s Steve Flynn – who won the championship in Nelson two years ago – third place after a run off following the final heat. While there are talks Mark might retire at the end of the season, Ian says the aim for next year will definitely be to take the 1NZ title for the first time, but

he wants to do it by beating the twotime champion. “We’re always gunning for 1NZ but Mark is just about impossible to beat,” says Ian. “I don’t really want to win it like that just because he’s retired, I’d rather win it because we had the better car.” The Wakefield man says considering the calibre of drivers, second place was a career highlight. “It’s probably the biggest entry list they’ve had in the last 10 years. There were 44 cars entered so to be 2NZ is really good. We had to work so hard for it.” The new 2NZ will now turn his attention to the six round ELF Super Cup Series which he came agonisingly close to winning last year.

SPORT Briefs FOOTBALL: New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Marlborough Falcons got their season off the perfect start on Sunday. Thanks to goals by Omar Guardiola and rookie Josh Lis, the Falcons managed to beat last year’s ASB Youth League finalists Southern United 2-0 in Dunedin. The Falcons now take on Heartland Wairarapa in Blenheim this weekend. RUGBY SEVENS: The Turf Hotel Tasman Sevens squad had a tough weekend in Rotorua at the Bayleys National Sevens Championship. Tasman lost all of its games on the first day to be placed in the bottom section of the tournament. Things didn’t get much

RUNNING: Swede, Erik Olofsson had one hand on the ‘Boar’s Jaw’ and ready to board his plane back to Scandanavia after yesterday’s NBS Striders Half Marathon and 10km. He was two seconds outside his half marathon estimate but ahead of him and a mere solitary second adrift was Striders stalwart, Steffan Eden, rapt that Nelson’s sought after athletic trophy will now take pride of place on his Redwoods Valley mantel piece. 150 competitors finished the 20th anniversary run or walk along the Maitai Valley Road. Iwao Fujii had the honours in the 10km only two seconds astray while Jennifer Jones-Shuttleworth and Andrew Calverley were within five. Jason Wright took a big step into his running career, dipping under 1hour 25minutes for fastest time in the Half as did Robyn Deane, surprising herself in ideal conditions by going close to 1 hour 30minutes.

Mitchell Drummond is still coming to grips with the fact he’s now a Crusader. The All Blacks haven’t arrived back for training just yet but there are still plenty of big names alongside him. In a few weeks time Richie McCaw will be his captain, IRB Player of the Year Kieran Read will be his team mate and so will another nearly 20 past or present All Blacks. The 19 year old, who attended Nayland College in Stoke before shifting to Nelson College where he led the first XV in the Press Cup, will be the youngest player in the Crusaders Super Rugby squad. While he admits he still has to “pinch himself ” when asked how it feels to be a Crusader, Mitchell is hoping a pre-season match against the Highlanders in Motueka will give him an early chance to prove he’s up to the standard – and what better way than in front of friends and family in the town his dad grew up in.

Former Nelson College first XV captain Mitchell Drummond could make an appearance for the Crusaders in their pre-season match in Motueka against the Highlanders. “That will be pretty special. Obviously my old man was born and raised in Mot so going back there for my first game will be a pretty special day,” he says. Mitchell compared the first day of being a Crusader to Christmas Day, highlighting the amount of free Adidas and Crusaders kit that is distributed to each player. “Day one you get a couple of bags and a whole heap of footwear which was cool. You open your bag

and it’s crazy the amount of stuff in there. This is the stuff I used to buy from the shops but now you’re part of a group that’s doing it. I still have to pinch myself and some days I still can’t believe I’m here doing this.” The Crusaders take on the Highlanders in Motueka at Sportspark Motueka on Friday, February 7. Tickets are selling for as little as $15 and can be purchased by visiting www.makos.co.nz.

Record holder returns to Challenge Wanaka Simon Bloomberg

Senior reporter Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

BIG AIR: Lee Nuttall in action during the Richmond leg of last year’s Tasman Skatepark Tour. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Tasman tour off to a flier

The Tasman Skatepark Tour started with “a hiss and a roar” in Mapua last week, and already two legs down, event spokesperson Paul McConachie is predicting another successful tour. After Mapua, the tour hit Takaka on Saturday and will be in Tapawera tomorrow before reaching Motueka, Brightwater and Richmond in the coming weeks. Put on by Tasman District Council with the help of funding from the Canterbury Community Trust and sponsorship from Village Cycles and Cheapskates, the Tasman Skatepark Tour runs through summer each year giving BMX, skateboard and scooter riders the chance to compete for $7000 worth of hot prizes. The leader board returns this year, enabling the top competitor in each of the three disciplines to win a BMX bike, skateboard or scooter depending on what they competed in. The bike is donated by Village Cycles with the scooter and skateboard provided by Cheapskates. The Tasman Skatepark Tour will not be held in Wakefield this year while Nelson is also a notable absentee. A “resource” decision meant the tour was scaled back this year, which spelled the removal of the Wakefield event, which was based around a mobile skate park. Nelson City Council did not want to fund an event at the Neale Park skate park. The Motueka comp will be held at the skate park on Old Wharf Rd on Saturday from 2pm before the Brightwater Skate Park on Wednesday January 22 from 5pm, and then the Richmond competition on Saturday 25 from 2pm.

Challenge Wanaka may not be the longest race that champion Nelson multisport athlete Richard Ussher will contest this year but he knows it will certainly one of the toughest. Richard is lining up in this Saturday’s 3.8 kilometre swim, 180km cycle and 42.2km run around Wanaka for the second time after winning the race in 2010 in a record time of eight hours 34 minutes 41 seconds. That’s only a fraction of the time it takes Richard to win most of his expedition races but he says that doesn’t mean there won’t be any pain and suffering. “Physically, the ironman races are the toughest because they are so intense and one dimensional. You are sitting on the red line all day which is different from the Coast to Coast where you get a long kayak to break it up or an expedition race which is more of a mental game.” Although Richard is happy with his lengthy build up to Saturday’s race he is still expecting to battle in the last 10 to 15 kilometres of the run. After a 3.8km swim in Lake Wanaka and 180km cycle that takes in Glendhu Bay and Lake Hawea, he says the final stage of the 42.2km marathon is always a big challenge. “I haven’t done an ironman for a long time but I’ve had a very good build up to this one. My training has been very specific and it hasn’t got me down - it’s been very balanced. “But Wanaka is a tough course by iron-

man standards because there’s no place to coast. The hills are not big but there’s lots of them and if it’s hot and windy then the last 10 or 15 kilometres of the run can be so hard.” Richard will be facing a high quality field that includes last year’s champion, Dylan McNeice and Challenge Penticton winner Jeffrey Symonds of Canada. Hamilton’s Keegan Williams, Wanaka’s Dougal Allen and Matt Burgess of Auckland as well as overseas professionals Courtney Ogden and Tim Beardall, both of Australia, Jaroslav Kovacic of Slovenia and Englishman Paul Hawkins, who finished third at Ironman UK in 2012, have also

entered. Richmond’s Robin Reid is also lining up in his first ironman distance race and Richard expects the former Olympic cyclist to blitz the 180km cycle section. “Robin will rip the bike apart and his swimming has been going quite well too. The run will be the big challenge for him - that’s where the pros can make up 20 or 30 minutes on the rest of the guys.” Takaka-born Jenny Rose heads the women’s field in the Wanaka Half which will also be staged on Saturday. A big contingent of Nelson and Tasman athletes have entered the race that has attracted 1200 competitors. le is e tipp lu a v t s the g a be ks of Findin ith my pic w -earth wn-to simple o ore, d r uch m . Sunscreen and sunhats were de rigueur at the Swimming Nelson Marlborough Country & Town Meet on Saturday, and it wasn’t just the weather that was sizzling as spectators were treated to an outstanding day of swimming. Eighty-seven competitors from around the region and as far away as Christchurch and Westport competed for age-group and club honours at Hampden St Pool. The Country & Town Meet recognises the region’s country clubs, with trophies for top country club and top country club swimmer. Charlie Thain of Motueka Swimming Club won the Life Members Cup for top country club swimmer, winning all eight events that she entered and notching up seven personal bests. This secured her a double gold for top overall 11-12 year old girl as well as top country club swimmer in her age group.

Daniel Trevurza of Motueka also won double gold for top overall and top country and swimmer for 11-12 year old boys. Completing the swimming trifecta for Motueka, Joshua Aymes, was a convincing double gold winner in the 10 and under boys category. However, the meet did not go all Motueka’s way. Waimea Swim Club put in many strong performances to claim the Crest Cup for top country club, just pipping Motueka who had won it the previous five years. Many of the region’s swimmers are heading to Wellington next week to test themselves against some of New Zealand’s top clubs as they move into the main competition season. The town clubs will get their chance at top honours and trophies at the next big regional meet, the Swimming Nelson Marlborough Age Group Champs in Blenheim on 1-2 February.
