Financial boost to restore Waimea Inlet Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The internationally-significant Waimea Inlet has received a welcome funding boost from the government. Prime Minister Jacinda Arden announced last week a package of 23 projects across the country that will clean up the nation’s waterways and create over 2000 jobs. $1.6 million has been allocated across two environmental projects based in the Waimea Inlet. Tasman mayor Tim King has welcomed the funding boost to an area that has seen a lot of work in recent years. “This funding recognises what’s been achieved so far, and gives us the chance to carry that on and do even more in future.” The Waimea Inlet is the largest semi-enclosed estuary in the South Island. The Waimea Inlet Enhancement project has been given $500,000 to fund actions in an existing plan that weren’t budgeted for, which will include improving water quality of tributaries feeding into the inlet, increasing saltmarsh habitat, creating a habitat restoration strategy for the inlet, and ongoing weed control of inlet margins. The second project is The Waimea Inlet billion trees project, which has received funding of $1.1 million for another 70,000 trees to be planted and maintained, which will cover around 60-70 hectares of the Waimea Inlet margins. This funding continues planting work that was funded in 2019. Sky Davies, manager of Tasman Environmental

The Tasman District Council held a youth forum throughout lockdown and encouraged young people from around the region to send in their thoughts and what they were feeling. Tasman District Council community

Financial boost to restore Waimea Inlet FRom PAGE 1 Trust, says that the boost is ‘really exciting.’ She says that the Tasman Environmental Trust has a collaborative goal with the Tasman District Council and the Department of Conservation to improve the health of the inlet. “This funding will allow for a lot more planting, and it will create more jobs in restoration work,” Sky says. The $1.1 million announced for estuary habitat work will build on the planting programme that was funded by the government’s one billion trees scheme. This will bring the number of shrubs and trees planted in the inlet to over 170,000 in the next few years. “This is a phenomenal funding boost towards the work that we’ve been doing,” says Sky. Sky says that the funding boost has highlighted the importance of the Waimea Inlet. “This funding is building on a huge amount of enthusiasm for the inlet and it’s great to have cen-

Dangerous roads cause concern for Oakwoods residents Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The major Gladstone RoadQueen Street intersection and the neighbouring driveways are a spiderweb of activity. With through traffic, traffic pulling off into businesses, cyclists, and pedestrians all vying for space. It has also been the scene of at least one recent near-miss and one pedestrian injury. “I was pushing my wife in her wheelchair when I heard brakes screeching and turned to see a car a metre from us,” says Mike Rodwell. The car was turning left into Gladstone Road from Queen Street and Mike had moved out onto the intersection. He headed out as per the beeps and the flashing green man cross signal. “It’s always a bit nerve-wracking having to cross at the lights although most drivers are careful,” says Mike. He’s decided to be proactive since the incident and is helping motorists to see him and his wife who has dementia. For their regular outings up to Richmond, he’s now taken to wearing a high visibility vest. Another pedestrian was struck by a car as he walked along the

The intersection is on Tasman District Council’s radar and plans are in the pipeline to assist all users of the intersection. “We have two solutions that are part of the development of Richmond west area,” says Jamie McPherson, Tasman District Council. One of TDC’s solutions is scheduled to take place next month in the form of the Richmond Bus Loop. This will offer
a safer option for all pedestrians but especially the residents of Oakwood’s Retirement Village. They will be able to board the fully accessible bus, wheelchairs included and bypass having to cross the major intersection. Another solution is a little further down the track and involves a new pedestrian corridor with access onto Gladstone Road. The TDC has bought a piece of land that follows the path of the Poutama drain and exits near the Jubilee Park tennis courts.

Dreadlocks come off for cancer research Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Liam Hart’s dreadlocks have been a part of him for over eight years. They reached down to his waist and were a treasured crowning glory. So, it was with mixed emotions that Liam said goodbye to them last Saturday. “They’ve been a part of me for the last 8 years, but my uncle was a special person to me”, says Liam. Liam spent a lot of time in his earlier years hanging out with his uncle who he said was looked upon as a great man in his hometown of Cromwell, because of the amount he did for his community. Liam’s uncle, Euan Hildyard died from liver cancer seven weeks ago during Lockdown. This motivated Liam to do something important in recognition of what his uncle meant to him. He came up with the idea of assisting those who were also dealing with cancer through Shave For a Cure. Shave For a Cure is part of Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand’s fundraising events that first started in 2005. It supports New Zealanders who are living with a blood cancer or blood conditions. The funds provide vital care and resources along with supporting the important re-

Liam had great support from family and friends, so far raising more than his initial aim. He had set his aim at $5000 and with his total now sitting at just over $5500 he has no intention of stopping there. Liam’s fundraising will continue via the Shave For a Cure site for a year. Many of Liam’s supporters were at
Nelson Matters
I have two core worries for Nelson and New Zealand’s future. Job losses and debt. National this week outlined our economic plan to get NZ working again. We have a jobs crisis. Unemployment numbers nationally hit 200,000 this month, the worst in 25 years. Nelson has had the fastest increase of any region with jobless numbers more than doubling from 2,000 to 4,200. Young people are being hit the hardest with our unemployment rate for under 30s the worst in New Zealand. This unemployment problem began before Covid-19. National’s strong economic management saw unemployment numbers drop eve-
ry year from 2010 to 2017. Unemployment benefit numbers grew by 10,000 in 2018 and another 13,000 in 2019. They are now increasing at 40,000 per month since April. The problems will compound when the Government’s wage subsidies end in October. We need a relentless focus on saving jobs. That is why I have campaigned so strongly for port access of foreign boats for Nelson’s marine engineering industry and for the retention of Air New Zealand’s regional maintenance base at Nelson Airport. The Government’s reticence or silence on these issues shows they do not get it. I am equally concerned about debt.
The Government is spending and borrowing at unprecedented rates all of which will need to be repaid. $25 billion or $16,000 per household has already been spent and Labour’s intention is to borrow over $140 billion or $80,000 per household. This scale of debt will leave New Zealand no room for decades to deal with future disasters or downturns. Labour thinks the answer to every problem is big spending. I see waste like the $570,000 on a slide at Parliament and $10 million in grants to AJ Hackett’s bungee business. $400 million has been spent on Kiwibuild that was meant to build 10,000 homes per year but deliv-
the salon to see him going through with this symbolic event. Liam’s daughter, Evelyn was there and didn’t appear to be too shocked at the transformation of her dad. Liam said one of the things he’s looking forward to the most is being able to swim with Evelyn more now. Although he could swim with his dreadlocks it would take days for them to dry.
“I quite like this new version of him,” says, Jade, Liam’s wife. She’s only ever known him with his dreadlocks. Although the length of them had increased quite a lot since they first met. If you’d like to assist Liam and Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand you can do so here, www.shaveforacure.everydayhero.com/ nz/bye-bye-locks.

ered only 400 in three years. $1900 million was announced for mental health in budget 2019. It has not made it to front line services and core services like Nikau House are being closed. Millions have been spent on Auckland light rail but is wasted with it now being cancelled. We need to be more prudent and focus on quality of spending. The borrowing should be for assets and infrastructure so we grow New Zealand’s balance sheet over coming years. That way we pass on to the next generation valuable assets alongside the debt. Labour is squandering New Zealand’s strong finances with Government’s nett worth declining from $143 billion
($75,000 per household) to just $33 billion ($17,000 per household). National’s leader Todd Muller outlined National’s five point plan last week covering responsible economic management, delivering infrastructure, reskilling and retraining the workforce, building a greener/smarter future and stronger communities. It will deliver more jobs and less debt. I commend the detail at national.org.nz. It is good that New Zealand has come through the Covid-19 health emergency better than most countries. National’s plan best equips New Zealand to navigate our way through the jobs and economic crisis ahead. Advt.

Burst pipe in Richmond cuts water supply
Houses throughout Richmond were left without water on Thursday morning last week, thanks to a burst pipe. According to the council, a pipe on Upper Queen Street failed. Hundreds of homes around Hill Street, Hart Road, Wensley Road and Queen Street were left without water. Crews were sent to attend the burst pipe at around 7am.
Recycling Changed
Only plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5 can still be put in kerbside recycling bins. Plastics that are numbered 3, 4, 6 and 7, or any that are unnumbered, must go in the rubbish. Both the Tasman District Council and the Nelson City Council decided to stop accepting plastics that don’t have a market for recycling. Plastics 1, 2 and 5 can easily be recycled into useful, quality products in New Zealand, but there is no market for the other groups of plastics.
Whitebait at risk
Inanga whitebait, like most of our native freshwater fish, are currently classified as “at-risk” or “in decline”. Council has undertaken its third districtwide inanga spawning survey to assess productivity at sites. They’re looking for ways to improve the health of the whitebait fishery. There are a total of 51 spawning sites in the Tasman Bay with three new sites found at Sandy Bay, Moutere Inlet and Maisey Road Waimea.

Charity house to hit the market this month Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A special house goes up for auction on the 25th July in Katania Heights, Brightwater. It’s a house whose three years of planning and building has involved 30 different businesses and is representative of the Nelson Tasman’s community spirit to provide support where needed. The proceeds from the auction of this home with its stunning view will go to the Child Cancer Foundation who provide comfort and support to family, parents and the children im-
pacted with child cancer. “We are incredibly humbled and appreciative of the generosity from everyone at Homes by Orange and the home’s supply partners on this amazing initiative,” says Tony Fitzgerald from CCF. The completion of this longterm project couldn’t have come at a better time as charities struggle to right themselves in the wake of Covid-19 with every cancelled event directly impacting fundraising. The official Open Day that took place last weekend was a chance not only for people to check out the finished product, it was also a chance
to thank everyone from the community who had been involved. There are a lot of them who should be proud of their assistance to the community. Their involvement included physical contributions, donations, and sponsorship. “It’s been heart-warming to see so many businesses step up and do what they can to support this fundraiser,” says David Orange, founder of Homes by Orange. David has built around 1500 homes over two decades but deems the Katania Heights charity home a special one. To him it represents a hope and dream come to life.
“This is something I’ve always wanted to do and especially with the CCF needing funds more than ever this year,” says David. It’s the generosity of the community that sustains charities like the Child Cancer Foundation as they don’t receive any direct government support. Events like Covid-19, which have a direct impact on their income, means the organisation is less able to help children with cancer. That’s why the Homes by Orange charity house is shining so brightly on the horizon of those children with cancer and their parents and families.

Mentors needed for Big Brothers Big Sisters Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
For Nelson man Tim Cross, the best thing about becoming a “Big Brother” mentor has been making a friend for life. He and his “match” Jordan, 16, are now moving into their tenth year of friendship, thanks to Big Brothers Big Sisters Nelson Tasman. “My journey with Jordan began on the day of his seventh birthday. This lively young boy was only just up to my waist, had no front teeth and could barely reach the pedals on his first two-wheeler bicycle,” says Tim. “Nine years later we are still together, and he is now almost as tall as me, shaves daily and has asked me to teach him to drive a car.” Big Brothers Big Sisters has been providing mentoring friendships to children in need of additional adult support for 22 years. But with 55 children on their waiting list, they are in dire need of more mentors. Just one hour per week is re-

Jordan has grown so much in so many ways in the time we have had together. He has become a very active young man who is involved with many community activities and he has a very positive outlook on life.
“The change from the young and shy, socially awkward and reticent seven year old to the now confident and focussed young man has been a delight to watch, and a pleasure for me to realise I have had a positive change in his life.” Tim says he received so much back in return. “This has been a real bonus for me.” Programme Director Chelsea Routhan says they would espe-
cially love to get more male mentors on board. “We have a lot of young boys on our list, aged from six to 12 years. It’s very rewarding with nearly 100 per cent of our mentors saying they would recommend it to a friend. “You don’t have to change your life to change theirs.” To find out more, email nelson@ bbbs.nz, phone 545 9864 or check out their website at bigbrothersbigsistersnelson.org.nz

An organisation thats mission is to have some fun and keep Tasman’s youth occupied with a safe activity have had the red flag come down on their current racetrack. “The council received a complaint related to noise

Local family pivots after Covid job loss Covid-19 has disrupted life for many, including redundancies and job losses. Matt McCrorie speaks with a couple who were left in the lurch after Air New Zealand announced the closing of it’s Nelson heavy engineering facility, and finds out about how they were able to turn bad luck into an opportunity to start their own business. The Gilberd family has turned misfortune into motivation, and they’re using that motivation to reopen the iconic Brightwater Motors. The family of four relocated to the Tasman region from Wellington late last year, in search of more space and a better lifestyle. Dave, who worked as a contracted engineer for Air New Zealand, had worked in Nelson before, with the family spending five months in Nelson in 2018. “We loved Wellington, but we wanted to find somewhere with a bit more space. We spent five months here, and we fell in love,” says Natalie Gilberd. A year later, the family made it happen. “Initially, we landed on our feet. We both found ourselves in great places to work,” Natalie says. However Covid-19 struck, and Dave was one of the many engineers who lost their job when Air New Zealand made the decision to close it’s heavy engineering facility in Nelson. “We really didn’t think
there was a risk of Dave losing work, then we had a zoom meeting and we were given the bad news,” Natalie says. Within the hour, the couple were trying to plan for the future. Now, the family is set to take on Brightwater Motors, a decades-old establishment in Brightwater. “I wanted to start a business – I had worked for myself for years, so I knew I could do it,” Dave says. A bit of research told Dave that car repair and mechanics did well in recessions. The self-declared petrol head wouldn’t have a problem learning the ropes either. “I’ve been taking cars apart since I was a kid, in my dad’s garage.” “It was a shock losing my job, but it pretty rapidly turned into excitement.” After his start in learning about cars in his dad’s garage, Dave did his apprenticeship with the New Zealand Air Force in the 90’s, with a stint working in the UK for a New Zealand manufacturing company. He also started his own
guitar- making company in 2011, custom-building guitars for international artists such as Sinéad O’Connor. He also worked as an engineer in the film industry in Wellington for five years, working on films like ‘Ghost in the Shell’ and ‘Blade Runner: 2049.’ Despite a long and varied career, Dave describes the transition to a mechanic in Brightwater as ‘the perfect fit.’ “We’re very excited. Brightwater is a great community, and I’m really happy to be opening Brightwater Motors. The reins have been handed over, and people have really missed the place.” Neighbouring petrol station NPD bought the workshop side of Brightwater Motors last year, but it has sat empty while NPD has been refurbishing its facilities. “It’s great to see the old workshop up and running again,” says former owner Tom Horncastle, a Brightwater local who ran the operation for many years. The Gilberd family, Natalie and Dave, with their sons, Ethan (left) and Karsiah (cen“I wish Dave all the best.” tre) are starting their own business. Photo: Jacqui Rawson.

Volunteer grave cleaners calling out for permission Matt McCrorie Brian McIntyre spends most of his time in the cemetery, and now the well known ‘grave-cleaner’ is appealing for permission to keep their work going. The Nelson local runs a group of 15 volunteers who have undertaken a massive effort to clean up and restore dignity to the 16,000 that are buried in Nelson’s Wakapuaka Cemetary. Brian started up the popular Facebook page Top of South Island, New Zealand History in 2018, and has since been responsible for sharing the stories of the region’s history. Most of the graves in the cemetery are around 150 years old, and most of them are in poor condition. “We understand that we are taking the liberty of refurbishing these
headstones without families permission, but after advertising on Facebook for permission, we have received permission to do just fifteen.” So far, Brian and his team have restored over 2,200 graves in the cemetery, and have had a ‘fantastic’ response from families and decedents, either when they visit the site, or on the Facebook page ‘ Friends of Wakapuaka Cemetery.’ “Families are also being connected to others they never knew of.” Brian is now putting out a plea for those who don’t want their family’s headstones restored to get in contact. “It is virtually impossible for us to contact the families of some five generations ago.” Anyone who has a concern should contact Brian McIntyre on 027 548 0757

Quality is the key ingredient at Appleby burger bar Jacqui Rawson Abbey Road is a local restaurant that’s speciality is burgers and whose reviews and awards back up their quality. The burgers at Abbey Road have been fine-tuned by Fabian Prioux, owner of Abbey Road. Every
component of the burgers whether it’s the bun or the sauce have been personally chosen for the quality and taste out of all the options that are locally produced. “I find the best ingredients so that what the customer is tasting is a combination of all the best flavours,” says Fabian.
He refers to all his products. Whether it’s a burger, a slice of cake, the fries, or calamari. Everything has gone through a selection process and that includes his organic coffee which is roasted in Golden Bay. Fabian produces all his burger’s sauces by hand from his signature
recipes and there are some twenty varieties of burgers to choose from; beef, lamb, gluten-free, vegetarian and fish to name a few. “I want my customers to have the best food experience they can, with the best quality ingredients.” They open from 9.30 am for coffee and cake with an indoor and

REAL ESTATE NEWS with
VINING REALTY GROUP LTD, BAYLEYS, LICENSED UNDER THE REA ACT 2008
Dear Readers, You have probably noticed that I have updated my personal photo and thanks to all those who have commented on how out-dated some real estate salespersons photos are. Photography is a very important part of our real estate business. Accurate and inviting photography enhances your chances of attracting the right buyers for your property. It is important not to over stage
your home or to use excessively wide angled lenses and drone photos that feature a roof rather than a photo of the boundary lines and landscaping and outdoor living spaces. Bayleys’ salespeople are proud of our standard of photography and property marketing and our vendors consistently show their gratitude for a job well done. Warm Regards,
Lydia

The man behind the name – Arnold Lane
!
Dianne Scott
We want to hear your opinions on what matters to you and your community Have your say and go in the draw to WIN a $50 Richmond Mall Voucher each month waimeaweekly and www.waimeaweekly.co.nz To whom it may concern, I was pleased to see your report on the renovation of Age Concern’s Activity Hall (Wednesday 1 July, page 4) which I attended because of the close association Life Unlimited Hearing Therapy has with Age Concern. Many of our clients come to us because of our positive relationship with Age Concern. From a professional perspective it is important for me as a hearing therapist working under a Ministry of Health contract that I do not show any political affiliation within my work. I was at the Age Concern event within a work role which was appropriate. I would also like to add that I think this paper does a great job generally and I enjoy receiving my copy each week. Kim Howell Abridged ‘Boxes of Lego for Every Classroom’ Kerry Schaab: Great stuff guys. ‘Fridge becomes kids library’ Amy Smith: Great story
Arnold Lane in Spring Grove is named after William Arnold, who once had a general store on the south-west corner of Lord Rutherford Road and Waimea West in Brightwater. William, who was also known as Red Bill because of his red hair, was born at Wilford Grove in 1854. He was an altar-boy at St. Joseph’s Church in Wakefield and attended Father Garin’s School as a boarder. As a young man he went to the Wairau, and in due course became head shepherd at Birch Hill Station. Later, he returned to the Waimea area and was a member of the Waimea Rifles Volunteers in the 1870’s. He married Ann Dron in 1881, and later that year he opened his store in a rented two-storied house. The corner room was the shop where he sold groceries, haberdashery and hats, and each docket had a small credit on the bottom for eggs, poultry or butter from the farmer’s wife. He travelled around in a horse and trap delivering goods. It was here they raised a family of 5 children. On 14th Dec 1887 it was reported in the Colonist that William was injured in a serious shearing
Arnold Lane accident which occurred at Upper Motupiko. “John Williams’s brother and William were shearing some sheep in a small building, and as John was sharpening his shears (he was sitting down at the time), a sheep knocked William Arnold down and he fell on John’s shears, the blade of which entered his back just below the ribs, penetrating about four inches.” Dr Peerless attended William, reported that he “lies
in a very dangerous state”. The accident required him to stay in Motupiko. He recovered enough to be moved back to his Brightwater house later the same week. In 1885, William sold his business to A J Palmer. In 1895, William, having already sold the Brightwater store, purchased section 62 at the Spring Grove railway crossing. It was a mixed farm previously owned by the Neimans. For years he was a keen member of the Wakefield Bowling Club and was a staunch supporter of the St. Joseph Church, Wakefield. He was a Justice of the Peace, served on the Spring Grove School committee for many years, and was also a member of the Invincible Draughts Team. As a cricketer he was known far and wide, having played for Brightwater and Wanderers, Spring Grove. He was included in inter-provincial cricket teams and an inter-colonial team against Australia. His wife, Annie Dron, pre-deceased him by some five years. William died on 29th September 1934, and is buried at St Josephs’ churchyard in Wakefield. In spite of the cold, wet day a very large number of friends attended the funeral.
Care is at the heart of everything we do. Stephanie, Stillwater Lifecare
If you or a loved one are looking for Care or Independent Living, Stephanie is here to help. Stephanie joined Stillwater as Manager in June 2020, after spending 5 years as Manager at Flaxmore Lifecare (Dementia Care) and over 32 years as a Manager in Aged Care in Australia. “A Better Everyday”, for Stephanie is one where each resident is able to “live their day”. “Everyone is an individual and we fit our day around how they’d like to spend their day. If they’d like to have breakfast in bed or at 9am have a sleep in, so be it.” For those residents coming into the Care Home at Stillwater, the first thing Stephanie will do is
to work together with the resident and family to create a ‘My Life’ poster which goes on the wall.
“It’s all about what your loved one needs, rather than what we can offer”.
“Everyone who comes into that room will get a really good snapshot of who this person is, the life they have led, what they enjoy in life, likes and dislikes and what their spiritual and holistic needs are.”
If you or a loved one is in need of Care or are interested in joining our vibrant community, Stephanie would love to catch up with you. She can also talk you through the Needs Assessment process.
She’s very passionate about working with families and the local community. There is an open-door policy at Stillwater. “Family can talk to us at any time and I promise there is always an answer or a solution to everything.“ Having experienced her own father’s journey through Aged Care, Stephanie knows how important it is that the family are listened to and are able to have complete trust in the people who are taking care of their loved one.

Colourful new artwork for Richmond from page 1 important.” Stef Naldi and Cristina Rule, both art students from NMIT, were involved in the First Taste festival in Richmond last year. The pair ran an art project for children at the festival and got in touch with Yulia. “When this opportunity came around she got in touch,” says Cristina. “This was an initiative from youth organisation around the top of the south, when we ask young people to tell us how they were feeling. We collected the messages, and we decided that we wanted to use these messages somehow,” Yulia says. She got in touch with Cristina and Stef and got them to design a mural based on those messages. “There were some common threads coming through,” Cristina says. The common theme was that young people really need nurturing, but that they need space to grow as well. “To us, that reminded us of what
YOUR
it was like in the bush, where the seedlings need the protection of the large trees, but they still need the light coming through to flourish.” They used the native bush analogy but added a splash of colour to make things more vibrant. “To us, we needed some bold colours, because youth is vibrancy and diversity.” Members of the community have been following with keen interest as well. Over the last two weeks, while the pair of artists were designing and painting the mural, which now covers the underpass near the Richmond Aquatic centre underneath Salisbury road, locals have been stopping in every day to check on the progress, and to see how the process unfolds. “People were checking in every day on us, we had some great feedback from the community while we were painting.”

Book fair raising funds for the hungry Matt McCrorie Reporter

EXCELLENCE IN DERMATOLOGY
A Richmond book fair taking place this weekend aims to raise money for those who are doing it tough due to the economic fallout caused by Covid-19. Richmond Holy Trinity Anglican Church is hosting its book fair, which hasn’t been on since 2016, and they’re aiming to raise money to feed those in need. Shiona Frengley, from the Richmond Anglican Parish, says that there has been a ‘huge need’ in the community since lockdown. “The money will be going towards our community pantry, which has been getting heavy use. We have had many people asking us for support, lots of people just need some food.” The church’s community pantry was started after lockdown, as an easy way to provide food to people in the community who have a need.

The ‘pantry’ is a table that sits outside the church, where people can help themselves to food. The initiative has been ‘hugely popular.’ “I filled it up late afternoon on Tuesday, and by mid-morning the next day everything was pretty much gone,” Shiona says. Shiona says that the success of the community pantry highlights a real need in the community. “There is a real need, and people are quite happy to approach us and let us know if there is anything that they need or if there was any other way that we can help them.” The pantry operates on a trust system. “We are bound to be taken for a ride now and then, but if 98 per cent of people are using it because they need it, we’re not going to stop doing it for that 2 per cent who don’t.” The book fair will be happening this Saturday, the 18th of July, from midday. Donations of books are still being welcomed.

Developed by NZ farmer Colin Cox the belt is worn around the lower back, fur against skin. Being hollow, possum fur traps heat and keeps a wearer’s back always warm. In 2010, olympic rower Mahe Drysdale developed osteoarthritis. Often, his back pain was so intense he could not train. He tried everything for relief but nothing worked. In 2011 Mahe learned about this ‘miracle’ belt and acquired one. His pain largely disappeared. He resumed

Wanderers regroup for match against Marist The Wanderers division one rugby team will be back on the field tonight against Marist for the midweek Nelson Bays competition fixture and will back-up on Saturday against Nelson. It comes after the team had to default their game against Waimes Old Boys due to a lack of players and safety concerns. Wanderers Sports Club director of sports Marty Davis says with their depth already being tested by the Coronavirus pandemic and the later time frames of the season which effect duties on the farm for many of their players, Wanderers felt playing three games in seven days was not practical and called into question player safety. “We were asking a group of guys to play three games in a week and we’d have to do that using division two guys and we just couldn’t do it,“ Marty says. “The decision was made by the club that it wasn’t a safe environment for the players. “This will allow us to field a team (tonight) and on Saturday. “We’re skinny on numbers and

down the Central ball carriers. It was the support play and willingness to offload to the support player that resulted in many fine team tries. None better than the kick-off receipt following Central’s try, from Alisi Seigafo, who, after making progress, passed to her front-row colleague Amanda Sim who in turn offloaded to the other prop, Ashley Ulutupu, before the final pass to Tempest Ropiha, who scored in her first
game for the team this season. Michelle Curry had a profitable day scoring six tries, ably assisted by Holly Donaldson on debut at fullback, who ran very well from the back. Sela Manu, Amelia Hammett, Ruby Jones, Natania Ngawhau and Gina Healey all stood out for strong breakdown work and excellent distribution and continuity skills, in a fine all-round team performance. Meanwhile, back in Nelson the Taylors Wanderers division two side played the strong Stoke side at Greenmeadows. In a rather scrappy first half, both teams had periods of dominance but were unable to score any tries and Wanderers actually led 6-0 at the break. Stoke displayed a sharp understanding of the conditions and ground layout by judicious use of a good kicking game which allowed them to dominate field position and score a couple of well taken tries before Wanderers responded with a good try themselves. A victory of 31-11 for Stoke.

It was a case of mission accomplished for Waimea Combined On Saturday as they dispatched lowly Lincoln Combined 42-10 at Lincoln High School. The commanding performance gave Waimea its second win of the season as they prepare to face St Bede’s on Saturday at Waimea College. Coach James Lash says while he was happy with the result on the scoreboard, there were still patches where his team “switched off ”. “I thought we scored some good tries and got some good go-forward through much of the game but we were guilty of not staying as focussed as we could have been,” he says. “Overall when we did turn it on mentally, we were able to score points pretty easily which was impressive. James says the set-pieces were becoming a strength.
“Scrubs are going well and we are getting good ball from line outs which are making attacking easier for us.” Centre Mackay Springer scored two tries and put in a strong kicking performance. The Morris brothers Ed and James Morris impressed with their goforward. Lock Jed Taikato also stood-out with his controls of the kick-off receipts. “I was impressed with how the team adapted to different situations and how we were able to score points off them,” James says. St Bede’s would be a tougher prospect but James believed he had a team capable of causing an upset. “There’s still a lot of improvement to come but I feel one of these weeks that we will tip-up one of these big Christchurch schools. “We just need the self-belief to make it happen. The Christchurch schools don’t travel that well and we generally have close games against Bede’s so there’s an opportunity to show what we can do.”

The Tahr Foundation has been successful in its judicial review case regarding tahr culling at the High Court in Wellington on Wednesday, July 8. New Zealand Deer Stalkers Association (NZDA) in support of The Tahr Foundation had taken legal action against the Department of Conservation (DOC) due to their lack of consultation. Justice Dobson, deciding in favour of the Applicant, ordered DOC to re-consult with all stakeholders (which includes New Zealand Deer Stalkers Association) but DOC can do some limited culling of tahr now. NZDA are, and always have been, keen to be an important part of the solution and work in partnership with DOC. Therefore NZDA welcomes the opportunity for further consultation with DOC regarding the 2020/21 tahr management plan. The judgement ruled that DOC is to give reasonable time and notice prior to meetings and issuing
information to stakeholders. The judgement also gives clear guidelines to DOC regarding how it must undertake its consultation processes and the NZDA supports this because it sets everyone’s expectations around what is meant by “consultation”. Our aim is to work with DOC to ensure the plan reflects a sustainable outcome that will allow recreational hunters to hunt tahr on public land - for the most part, our members and recreational hunters only have access to public land and the tahr living there. This fact needs to be included in the fine detail of all operational plans. NZDA would like to see targeted culling by DOC that reduces numbers in those areas we can all agree are overpopulated or inaccessible to recreational hunters. NZDA would like to see a common-sense approach taken that is “win-win” for our alpine ecosystem and recreational hunting opportunities so valued by hunters.

Nelson’s Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway is getting new clay for its track for the upcoming season. Photo: Supplied.
Speedway gets clay for next season Jacob Page The Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway track is getting a little TLC this offseason. Last week the track got new clay put on it, a job which will make for cleaner, faster racing and also less dust for spectators to contend with. Club president Wayne Martin says more than 1600 cubic metres of clay will be put onto the new track for the 2020/2021 season which is likely to get underway in October. “The old clay was getting past its use-by-date with a lot of rubber and stones in it. “A month ago we had a phone call from one of our members saying he
had come across some clay up the Moutere Hill that was really clean with no stones in it, so we ended up doing a deal with the owner of the land that was too hard to turn down,” he says. The last time the track had fresh clay was six years ago.“This sort of big overhaul is done every nine or 10 years but we’re always topping it up as a lot of clay goes home on cars and tyres. “The rubber in the track makes it slick and quite dusty, so with the new clay it will have a lot more bite and won’t go slick as quickly which will also keep the dust down. The public entranceway at the main gates is also getting a tidy-up where a new sign will be erected.
