Contractors play catchup on Queen St Simon Bloomberg Contractors will be will be increasing the number of workers to try and make up for lost time after toxic roading material, bundles of data cabling and Argentine ants slowed progress during the first stage of the Queen St redevelopment. The $11million upgrade, which started on February 7, is designed to increase the capacity of stormwater pipes and direct water away from buildings to prevent flooding which devastated the town in 2011 and 2913. Water pipes and telecommunications and power services are also being replaced and the streetscape modernised to create a more pedestrian-friendly space for the community. However, Tasman District Council programme delivery manager Russell McGuigan says they are already four weeks behind schedule with the completion of the first stage at the lower end of Queen St now extended to late June. The start of stage two has also been delayed by four weeks and will now commence in mid-June and Russell says the contractor Downer is now taking steps to play catch-up. Russell says the first stage was always going to be the most challenging

Charities helping children walk the walk Two Nelson charities, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Walk With Us have cobbled together a partnership to help keep vulnerable children active in the outdoors. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a youth mentoring programme that matches adult mentors with vulnerable children and young people aged between six and 18. It started in Nelson in 1998 and this year has almost 200 “matches”, making it the country’s big-

However, Nelson programme director Chelsea Routhan says one of the problems is that some of the children can’t afford shoes needed to enjoy outdoor excursions with their mentors. Now, she says that problem has been solved after last year teaming up with Walk With Us, which provides shoes for children from families in-need. “We have partnerships with
and “they are such a great cause”. Walk with Us was formed in 2013 and has so far provided 290 free pairs of school and sports shoes for children, aged between five and 13, from families in-need. The trust is run by volunteers and is planning its next fund-raiser on September 14. Stirling Sports, Smiths Shoes, Number One Shoes and Whitwells in Motueka provides discounted shoes for the trust.

Richmond Unlimited’s Belinda de Clercq says Queen St retailers and businesses expressed concern at the delays at a meeting last week. She says they are pleased the contractor is taking steps to “hopefully speed up the process” to minimise the impact of the work on businesses. Belinda says Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce chief executive Grant Kerr and representatives of the Nelson Tasman Business Trust Sarah Holmes and Bill Bratt also attended the meeting to “see how they could help.” “There was good sharing of information with ideas about how to promote your business through marketing and social media so it was quite a positive meeting. Nineteen student bands battled it out on the Annesbrook Church stage on Saturday, all vying for one of the 12 spots in the 2017 Smokefree Rockquest Nelson final. Seven of the nine bands from Waimea College, Garin College and Motueka High School impressed the judges enough to earn a place in Friday’s regional final at Theatre Royal. Future Class, The Deadbeet Express, RELM, Equinox, The Turncoats, Bak2Bak, and Landwaves will go up against Nelson bands and each other in the hope of finishing in the top two in order to move on to the national final in Auckland on September 2. Future Class is made up of five Garin College students, Abbey Hahn, Logan Ford, Catherine Jemmett, Tayne Clements and Caleb Binns. Future Class vocalist Abbey says the band is shocked they made it into the final “It was such a busy week leading up to the heats and half our band was away on school trips so we weren’t sure how we were going to go but we are absolutely stoked.” Abbey has competed in Rockquest in each of her five

Family of brass players Jessie Johnston Reporter
jessie@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Families who play together, stay together. In this case, for Nayland College principal Daniel Wilson, his wife Carrie and mother-inlaw Jan Lewis, it’s playing in the Nelson City Brass Band. Carrie plays the tenor horn, Daniel the trombone and Jan the cornet and all have been playing their brass instruments for the last 30 years. While Carrie and Daniel started playing when they were eight and nine years old respectively, Jan says she’s always played music and switched to brass so that all the family were “going in the same direction.” Jan played for the Ascot Park Hotel Invercargill Band, until two months ago when she moved to Nelson and joined the Nelson City Brass Band. Carrie and Daniel have been active members of the Nelson band for the last 18 months and in other parts of the country before that. “Carrie and I actually met through our involvement in bands. We were playing in a National Youth Band together and since then we have played in

family,” says Jan. The third generation is also involved in brass with Daniel and Carrie’s daughter Emma, just 18 months into learning the cornet, as well as being a member of Nelson City Brass Youth Band. “We’d like to encourage people to get involved in learning an instrument. The band runs quite an extensive youth programme and, in terms of learning, it uses both sides of the brain and really challenges you. I think for young kids, that social aspect of being around other people, is great,” says Daniel. Last month, the band successfully defending its C Grade title at the New Zealand Brass Band Championships in Wellington. The band convincingly won the Hymn, Set Test and Own Choice Test sections, to win the C Grade aggregate by 12.5 points. It is the second consecutive year the band has won the title and it is likely to be promoted to the B grade competition next year. Lessons offered through the Nelson City Brass Band are free, so if anyone is interested in picking up and learning a brass instrument they can contact Wayne Jennens on 027 444 8939.

Contractors to build Nelson’s new airport are expected to be announced at 4pm today. A multi-million dollar upgrade of the airport is due to start within weeks and will take about 18 months to complete. The building structure will utilise locally grown and processed LVL. Airport chief executive, Rob Evans says the contract represents the end of an important prepa-
ration phase. “The team are very excited to be getting on with the job after a long design period. Domestic passenger growth has been over 25% since 2015 and is expected to surpass one million later this year, by far the highest of any regional airport in the country.” The announcement will be released at nelsonlive.co.nz from 4pm today.

Members recognised at car club open day

David Topliss was the winner of the Nelson Vintage Car Club award for Restoration of the Year, presented at the club’s open day on Sunday afternoon. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
Jessie Johnston As well as officially opening their new club rooms, Nelson Vintage Car Club used Sunday afternoon gathering to celebrate some of their members ‘impressive achievements. First on the agenda was the presentation for Restoration of the Year, which was won by David Topliss, of Topliss Bros. Precision Engineering. David has been a member of the club for the last 30 odd years and is certainly no stranger to vintage car or motorcycle restorations, this year winning the award for his work on a 1926 Alvis. “I bought this in Auckland as a started restoration, it hadn’t been going since the 1950s. It was basically a frame, but in the end I completely stripped it and started from scratch,” says David. “You decide whether you want to know the whole car, so in that case you’ve really just got to strip it back to the last nut and bolt, take everything apart and just fix it all, replace what needs replacing and put it together as good as new. You hope it will then do a good mileage.” When David got his hands on the vintage vehicle, the engine was simply a box of bits, “and a lot of it was completely worn out.” It’s taken David six years to complete the restoration of the Alvis, although it hasn’t been a completely solo effort. “The body is what everyone sees and it’s the most difficult thing to do, so I got another member to build it for me. Richard Conlon is just an absolute artist, he’s really made it, I can do the mechanical stuff but not that.” Nelson Vintage Car Club also recognised two members who have been part of the organisation for the last 50 years. Tony Hansen of Richmond and Jack Anglesey of Tadmor have both been long- time vintage car enthusiasts and were presented with their 50-year badge and certificate by the vintage car club national president, Diane Quarrie.

The Suter Gallery was not just the venue for this year’s awards – it received a Heritage Architecture Award and a Public Architecture Award. Te Matira, a house designed 40 years ago by Nelson architect Ian Jack, received an Enduring Architecture Award and the Nelson College Commerce Centre’s “origami-like” metal cladding won the Education award. “This year’s awards highlight both the variety of work that architects undertake in our region as well as the skill, passion and attention that they lavish upon their buildings,” said awards convenor Richard Carver.

Community comes out in masses for Big Share Fair Brittany Spencer Reporter
reporter@nelsonlive.co.nz
Hundreds of people crowded into Hope Community Church on Saturday for, what could have been, the church’s biggest Big Share Fair yet. A large group amassed in the church car park waiting for the start of the free event which is run by the church as part of HopeFest. The biennial festival provides events, seminars and activities for the community. As soon as the doors opened, people spread throughout the church, picking up furniture,
homeware, clothing and food, as well as getting free haircuts, and having fun with face painting, archery, go karts, a bouncy castle and an art demonstration. Among the first to line up for the Big Share Fair was Nelson’s Stuart McAlister, who says the real need for the event was seen by the number of people who came. “There’s so much here that I can get if I need it and, if I know someone else needs something, I can pick it up for them, too.” “The effort they’ve gone to is incredible, giving to all these people and showing that un-
conditional love, it’s what it’s all about.” Hope Community Church senior pastor Donald Irvine says events like the Big Share Fair are really important to the church. “The middle part of our name is community and that is really what we are about. “We want to serve and help the community and the fair is one way we can do that.” HopeFest 2017 includes the Big Share Fair, a charity quiz night, seminars and this Sunday’s service at 10am will feature well-known broadcaster Petra Bagust.
It’s been four weeks since two thieves broke into Morley Motorcycle and Marine, shimmied under a security beam, evaded infra-red detectors, and rolled a $14,500 bike out the store, but no one has been charged for the theft - yet. The pair were caught on Morley’s security cameras when they stole the 2017 CRF450RX bike at 1.49am on April 17. The pair tripped the alarm only as they pushed the bike out the removed window and security was on site moments later. After posting a $5000 reward for information leading to their prosecution, Morley Motorcycle and Marine managing director Ian Robinson says they’ve have a wave of infor-
mation flooding in, including the suggestion that an organised group of up to seven people was involved. While no one has been charged, Ian says they’ve “kicked up some lowlife” and have handed quite a lot of information to the police, some of which includes people who are well-known to police. “The reward has obviously kicked up a lot of dust and a lot of interest,” says Ian. “We’ve had accusations saying it was an organised group of seven people who were responsible for the burglary, and we’ve had six people in with that information. “We have caused a great deal of interest and, I would say that, whoever has done it should be looking over their shoulder.” Ian says he is very
grateful to everyone who has come forward and the reward stands. “I am over the moon and the reward stands, I’m prepared to pay them a lot of money. If we can get the prosecution, if we can get these bastards nailed, the reward is theirs. “We need people looking, we need people to be watching out for us and somewhere, somehow, someone is going to open their mouth and there will be some information that will get through to the police.” Nelson Senior Sergeant Nigel McMorran says the investigation is still ongoing and they have been following up on some leads from social media, but he could not comment further. Ian says the store has spent another $8000 upgrading their current security.

It was the perfect start to Mother’s Day for hundreds of women all around the country as they hit the pavement for the Jennian Homes Mother’s Day Fun Run/Walk. Nelson women turned out in record numbers on Sunday morning for the charity event, over 750 gathering outside Jennian Homes on Champion Rd for the start of the 5km course. Nationwide, around 10,000 women took part in the fun run and walk at 23 locations around New Zealand, which is a huge jump from the 7000 women who participated last year. Now in its sixth year, the event is part of an initiative run by Jennian Homes to support the Heart Foundation’s Heart Foundation for Women’ campaign, which aims to improve the heart health of New Zealand women. Heart disease is the number one cause of death for women in New Zealand, claiming the lives of more than 50 women each week, and it’s one of the reasons why Powerhoop Nelson decided to head along on Sunday and take part. “[We all thought] why not,” says Powerhoop instructor Sara Irvine “It’s raising awareness of heart health so we’re supporting the good cause, and also we do classes each week and this is just extending what we do and having some fun.” Amongst the sea of red T-shirts, designed by Dick Frizzell, were Olympic athletes Sophie McKenzie and Anita McLaren, who enjoyed their morning encouraging the participants. Following the event, a nationwide donation by Jennian Homes of $20,000 was made to the New Zealand Heart Foundation.
Bridget Budget answers your questions
Q: Do you have any tips for
reducing my power costs?
A: In winter, hot water and space heating add the most to our power bill. Consider these ideas:
Find the cheapest power provider at powerswitch.org.nz Consider ‘smooth pay’ for the same weekly payments year-round Adjust your hot water cylinder temperature; 60°C is high enough Insulate the hot water cylinder & check for cylinder leaks Conserve hot water with short showers & cold machine washes Heat pumps are cheaper than any other electric heater Use the heat pump at around 21 degrees, rather than higher Only use the heat pump or heater when you are in the room Set the heat pump onto Heat, NOT Auto or Cool Unflued gas heaters are the most expensive to run, make your home damp and emit toxic fumes Turn appliances off at the wall Use energy efficient light bulbs Dry your clothes outside

Three golds for Richmond Plains Simon Bloomberg A commitment to excellence in the vineyard and winery and two exceptional vintages have helped Richmond Plains win three gold medals at New Zealand’s only competition held to honour the country’s top organic wine producers. Richmond Plains last week received gold medals for its 2016 Blanc de Noir and Sauvignon Blanc and 2015 Chardonnay at the New Zealand Organic Wine Awards in Christchurch. The awards have been run for four years and this year judges awarded gold medals to 26 of the 139 wines from 28 wineries. Richmond Plains owner Lars Jensen says they are thrilled with the gold medals which reflect a lot of hard work in the vineyard and in the winery by their winemaker Steve Gill. Lars says 2015 and 2016 were also exceptional vintages which helped produce excellent wines across all varieties. “The blanc de noir is a delicious wine which is like drinking champagne without the bubbles and it was another good year all round
for Nelson sauvignons,” he says. “The chardonnay was a small vintage but it produced some excellent fruit and Steve gave it a nice balance using 15 per cent new French Oak.” Richmond Plains is one of the country’s original organic wineries, starting with its first vintage in 1991. However, Lars says the number and quality of organic wines is growing rapidly in this country as the global demand for organic wines increases. “When we started, there were hardly any organic wineries and even 10 years ago there were only five or six but now there’s over 50. Organics is really being embraced by viticulture and horticulture now.” Steve says the medals are a “wonderful recognition for all the hard work the team puts into making our wine. We strive hard to work with nature in our organic and biodynamic vineyards to produce balanced wines that not only taste great, but are good for you and the environment.” Richmond Plains also won silver for its 2016 Pinot Gris.

A few weeks ago, while reading the Grey Star newspaper, I came across a photo of West Coast Health Board chair, Ms Jenny Black, and a Member of Parliament, standing viewing the work progress of the new Greymouth hospital. Rather than spend $1.2 million and two years planning for the new Nelson Hospital, maybe Ms Jenny Black, chairperson of NMDH Board, could arrange with Nick Smith to obtain from Ministry of Health, copies of the Greymouth Hospital plans and also plans for the recently-completed Taranaki hospital. With a little modification, either plan may be suitable for Nelson. A. Smithson. Definitely needs an upgrade. I was in there last week for three nights and had to share a room with three others. Bloody annoying and got no sleep as two of them were snoring. Tracey Jackett. It’s bloody brilliant compared to Hawkes Bay Hospital which resembles something out of a black and white horror movie. Toni Scott-Bishop.

I hope this is going to also include more car parking for people, there is nowhere near enough. Charlotte Drummond. P cools housing market: Sixty-five per cent of leased homes!!! Nelson, we have a serious problem. I think all rentals should be tested before and after a resident leaves, just like the carpets and house has to be cleaned. Carmyn Hunt. I know a place in Nelson which is terminating a man in a wheelchair on P - up all night, selling P, having raids, constant gangs go around there and housing New Zealand allowing it. Lisa Harding. I think all homes should have a P contamination test done at the end of each tenancy. That way, those of us wanting to rent know that it’s safe and, if it’s not, you can tell who contaminated it. Cara Gledhill. I’m not sure I would consider a 3.8 percent increase in house prices over three months a “cooling off.” I think we create a lot of fear and worry and business with the P-testing craze as well! Seems poor media coverage is helping to make houses seem even more unattainable for the average first home buyer. Kristen Hammond. I have tested every rental property I have re-let for the last 12 months. We got one positive due to
smoking. That was a composite test. When each individual room was retested, no room had over 0.5. The case ended up in tenancy tribunal due to a couple of factors. The adjudicator says he is now not considering any property contaminated unless it is over 1.5. It appears to me that most of the so-called contaminated properties are actually false positives. However, it would be good if the Government would say that if a landlord could prove drug use was going on in a property the tenancy should end. Glenn Morris. Serious bullying incident at Nelson College: I had a friend who boarded there 20+ years ago. Some of the stories he told and rituals that were passed down through the years were horrible, but the boys just put up with it because if they spoke up the treatment that followed was even worse. It was just part of boarding life and the teachers often turned a blind eye. I’m glad someone spoke out and it has been dealt with! Victoria Thomas Ashcrof. Our son moved here from another school in Chch where he was bullied terribly. Not once did he experience issues at College and we found staff to be excellent in dealing with any concerns. It seems to me the staff are taking this very seriously and acting appropriately when many other schools would try to pretend there wasn’t an issue. Johanna Fowler.

local news as it happens
The Nelson Mail will take two big steps out of Nelson over the coming months, and despite the spin, the fault isn’t with the industry, but with its Australian owners. Fairfax, owners of the Mail, The Leader and stuff.co.nz, is proposing to print the Mail just three or four days a week, down from its current six. It has also announced that it will close its printing press in late July. This is on top of local office shutdowns in Motueka and, recently, Richmond. Fairfax have tried to spin its “new publishing model” for Nelson as a “refresh”. It isn’t. It’s a short-term costcutting exercise, while they try to figure out how on earth it can survive. The move comes just months after the Marlborough Express was shrunk to three days a week and as 125 journalists are set to be cut from Fairfax papers in Australia. What Fairfax’s announcement on Monday morning didn’t acknowledge is that its poor decisions that led to where they are today. We are not gloating by any means but will not sit back while a bunch of Aussies try to paint a picture of doom and gloom and economy failure. The reason the Mail has struggled in its last 10 years, after 140 years as probably the most influential business in the region, is that it was abandoned by Fairfax. Its “digital first strategy” meant its local stories went

The Nelson Mail and The Leader’s Richmond office has closed after 25 years. onto the Stuff website first, meaning those who bought the paper were made to feel like mugs – they paid for something that everyone could get for free the day before. This has decimated its circulation and is the reason why you will find hardly any local advertisers, compared to even five years ago. Advertisers need eyeballs to be looking at their messages. Fairfax thought by boosting website “Stuff ”, advertisers would follow them there. They haven’t. Google and Facebook suck up most of the digital advertising, leaving Fairfax in a lose-lose situation. And digital advertising has yet to get any sort of reasonable traction. Anywhere. It may do at some stage but it’s a ways off. After years of putting their website first, it’s now too late to save their paper. The true circulation is too low; the staff are too few. In short, its business model is in disarray. The saddest part of it all, is the number of good people who have been forced out
the door of the Nelson Mail over the past 10 years. First it was the sub editors, then designers, accountants, middle management, classified staff and now the printers. All that’s left to cut are the reporters and sales staff. These people didn’t deserve to lose their jobs and it certainly isn’t their fault, or the fault of those still there. It’s a shame that the Mail, once proudly locally owned, was sucked into the Fairfax vortex of mis-management. But don’t let Fairfax’s demise fool you into thinking print is dead. It isn’t. Waimea Weekly and Nelson Weekly, our locally owned newspapers, have just recorded their 10th and 5th year of increased growth respectively and the next 12 months are forecast to be even better. We’re taking on more staff and expanding into new areas. As a truly local papers, with local owners, we’re dedicated to our region and to telling our stories. The future for newspapers is very bright, but only if you do it properly.

Mums meet mums Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Just over 100 mums from around the Nelson-Tasman region celebrated Mother’s Day weekend in style – thanks to the Artemis Mums Meet Mums event at Founders Heritage Park on Saturday afternoon. Mums enjoyed some time out from their usual routines, enjoying high tea, bubbles, and plenty of pampering. Organiser Rachel Eggers, who founded the ‘Social Bubs’ network, says that the afternoon was an “absolute success.” “I don’t think it could have gone better,” she says. “It was so lovely to share the experience with so many wonderful Nelson mums,” she says. “The hair, make-up and massage pamper stations were non-stop, with mums enjoying the time out to feel special.” There was also a mini crèche at the event so the young ones were looked after while the mums en-

Rachel says it is the second year they have organised the event, which is aimed at mums who have a child under three or who
are pregnant, and not just for first-time mums. “We had many mums attend who have more than one child,” she
says. There were talks from mayor Rachel Reese, chairlady of the Postnatal Depression Support Network Nelson board, Harriet Denham, and Charlotte Zohrab, who was brave enough to share her personal experience with postnatal anxiety. Over $25,000 worth of product was given away to the mums, with them taking home hefty goodie bags and spot prizes just in time for Mother's Day, including a night away at a luxury resort, family photography packages, skincare packs and other goodies. Five dollars from every ticket was also donated to Postnatal Depression Support Network Nelson. Rachel says they are incredibly grateful to their sponsors and the local community for all the support they received to make the event possible, and to raise awareness and funds for Postnatal Depression Support Network. The network’s offices are located at 319 Hardy St and can be contacted on 5483555 or emailing postnataldepression@clear.net.nz

Freezing works loses 146 years of experience Simon Bloomberg The Nelson freezing works is losing a wealth of experience after three old timers with a combined total of 146 years service decided to hang up their white gumboots. Norm Gill was the first to call it a day, retiring late last month after 45 years at the Stoke plant. Last week Grant Pearce followed suit after 43 years, and Keith Smith, 38 years, will be next when he retires when the season ends in the next week or two. All three belong to a select group who started work at the old plant, which was closed in June 2000, and continued in the new plant opened later that year. "We all came here from the old plant - I think there's only about a dozen or so of us left now," Grant says. "Nearly all the old guys like us have gone and all the young guys are from a different world, so it's time to call it a day." Norm, who started as a labourer in the old plant before moving to the beef house and then into the cutting room where he was a leading hand and trainer, says he stayed there all these years because it was “a steady job that pays well”. Norm and his son Shane and grandson Sean created history in 2013 when they became the first family to have three generations working at the same time. Grant started at the freezing
works in October 1974 after moving from Golden Downs where was a forestry worker, to be closer to his fiancée, and now wife, Jill. He started in the fellmongery before moving to the slaughterboard where he worked as a labourer, then butcher. Keith had worked at Baigents Timberyard and on the Maui Oil rig before returning from his "big OE" and starting at the freezing works. "My brother-in-law John Eales worked there and he put my name down and I got the job," Keith says. "I started off as a labourer outside and then worked on the cooling floor before going onto the mutton chain as a butcher." All three old timers say the biggest changes they experienced during their long careers were the introduction of strict health and safety regulations and hygiene standards. Although these changes were inevitable, Grant says they have also made the working environment a lot more clinical. "We used to have a lot of fun in the old plant. There was always someone joking around and playing tricks - you can't do that with all the health and safety these days." Norm says "so much has changed since I started. If someone had told me I would have to wear a hairnet 40 years ago I would have

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. laughed at them.” The development of new technology that has increased the efficiency of the plant is another big change in the industry, Keith says. "It was a lot harder in the old days before all the mechanisation, but we were young and you didn't think anything of it. But even with all the mechanisation, it's
been getting harder again as I've been getting older." Grant says he is looking forward to his retirement and will be "taking things as they come", although his dog Max may have different ideas about that. "He's a handful so I imagine I'll be doing a fair bit of walking with him. We also do dog agility classes so we'll have more time for that now."
Norm is keeping busy helping a friend who runs a car sales yard while Keith is keen to finish restoring a 1929 Model A Ford he has been tinkering around with for a couple of years. All three say they will miss their workmates and camaraderie, but not the early starts and long hard days. "I will miss the guys but not the job - I've had enough," Grant says.

“It’s great to have Jason on board, we have both got a good sense of humour,” says Glen. “It’s taken a lot of pressure off everything and it’s fantastic to be working alongside a likeminded jeweller who shares the same passion for jewellery and customer service.”

Originally from the UK, Jason started an apprenticeship working on clocks before progressing to the workbench, learning all aspects of jewellery repairs. He’s also a qualified FGA gemmologist and says he loves working on every piece that comes across his bench, as “every item is different and can have its own unique challenges.”

Jason Jones and Glen James of Glen James Jewellers offer a range of services that are all carried out on site by them, promptly and professionally. Photo: Jessie Johnston. and Jason’s 26 years, there’s no doubt Glen James Jewellers has a lot of experience to offer Nelson when it comes to working on jewellery of all shapes and sizes. “We do a huge amount of jewellery repairs, such as ring resizing, chain repairs and rhodium plating, through to re-claws and major ring rebuilds,” says Glen. No matter what is required, they’re the ones everyone is coming to see because everything stays on site, personally done by Glen and Jason, promptly and professionally. “We can often do a same day turnaround for repairs like sizing and chain repairs, which is perfect if you live out of town,” says Glen. Designing and creating jewellery such as a wedding or engagement rings is another area which they excel at. “Buying a massproduced item from a cabinet is ok however, having an item of jewellery custom designed with your own input and ideas instantly creates that personal connection for yourself or your fiancée,” says Glen. No matter what you require, there’s no doubt Glen and Jason will be able to offer you exceptional service and results. Wanderers Rugby Club Day will be YOUR PRICE about more than just club mates enjoying a day out watching the oval ball code this Saturday at the Brightwater Domain. One of the senior utility backs Kahu Tamatea and prop Drew Petelo were two of the catalysts for the Wanderers Maidens’ Day – a celebration of women in the club. “We are both on the entertain-

Wanderers’ Club Day - 20 May 2017 Tone Ng Shiu means the young players can see it’s possible to make a national impact from club level.” Sam says the senior A team is still more than capable of making the semi-finals of the Tasman Trophy. “We always knew the start of the season would be tough with a number of key guys injured but as we start to get those guys back, it really makes everything much easier for us.” The proof comes when you look at the 55-24 score line in the win over Harlequins. Flanker Willie Hamilton scored a first half hat-trick while the work of veteran Jesse Pitman and Sione Holani who proved an effective ball runner, proved too much for Harlequins. The team will face East Coast at the Brightwater Domain on Saturday at 3pm. The junior games will be played at Lord Rutherford Park starting at 9.30am with the U7 teams. Under 14 are playing at 1pm against East Coast. The senior players will be helping with warmups and encouraging the players in their games. Wanderers major sponsor Taylors Contracting will be giving away rugby balls to all club players on the day. Charlie Taylor will be handing balls out and senior players will also be helping out. The Nelson Building Society will also have T-shirt giveaways for all Wanderers junior players as part of the support they have for community sports teams in the Nelson and Tasman region. The senior club rugby will be played at Brightwater with the under-15 team starting the afternoon games at 11.30am. The division two match between Wanderers and Collingwood will start at 1pm, while the division one team will play East Coast at 3pm. To finish off the games, the Wanderers Wolves rugby league team will play Richmond Rabbits at 5.30pm. The kitchen will be open for hot chips and raffles will be doing the rounds. There will be a meal at 6.30pm for all club members with a small charge.

“Governance of the members, by the members, for the members.” It is a wonderful ideal, a cornerstone of the club movement, but it only works if members are prepared to become involved and participate in the process. The first and perhaps most important step is to talk with the candidates and make sure your vote counts in the forthcoming executive elections. A big thank you to all those who are Lewis Della Bosca standing. Official voting times are between 4pm and 7pm on both Thursday 25 and Saturday 27, and for two hours following the conclusion of the AGM. However, if you can’t make those times special votes can be cast at the club office, when open, every day until and including Friday 26. There is no excuse for not voting! The three highest polling candidates will be appointed for a two year term, the fourth-highest for a one year term. Please attend the AGM. Hear first-hand how your club is performing and have your say. Your executive has scheduled a general business forum to be held immediately following the conclusion of the formal AGM. We want to share ideas, to debate issues, we want members to ask questions and air their views and we want members to go away knowing that addressing matters raised will be a priority for the incoming committee. See you all on the Sunday 28.

What I’m trying to do is develop everything that the school has been involved with since 1993, like teaching programmes, how the grounds have been de-

As part of his research, Arnold is keen to collect people’s own recollections of the school, whether they were involved as a teacher, student or a parent, because “personal contributions make for interesting reading,” says Arnold. Founded on October 8, 1843, Wakefield School is the oldest continuous school in New Zealand. Originally set up in the home of Mary Ann Baigent, it was soon crowded and by November 1843, John Wilkinson had established a separate school under the sponsorship of the

Wakefield Bowling Club The summer season has been very successful with good numbers at social roll ups and tournaments, good results from teams and individuals at Interclub and Centre events and a great spirit within the club. Highlights of the season include: The Women’s 7s team winning the Nelson Interclub Division 2, the Saturday morning Interclub team winning the Presidents Trophy, two Wakefield teams winning their sections in the midweek Junior Pairs with Steve Goodfellow
and Phil Johnston beating Di Holland and Pam Bonis in the final and Di Holland winning the Champion of Champions Women’s Junior Singles. Wakefield Bowling Club’s prize giving was held on the summer season closing day on April 22 with presentations to Club Champ winners and the most improved player awards going to Paul Lines for the men and Di Holland for the women. The winter season opens on May 14 and we have a superb facility with the synthetic green
and a lovely backdrop for sunny Nelson winter days. There will be a public open day on Sunday, June 11, from 1:30pm until 4pm. Social roll ups are held on Wednesday and Friday afternoons throughout winter, with Interclub on alternate Mondays and full day tournaments on alternate Sundays and the third Wednesday of each month. Anyone interested is welcome to attend at any of the above sessions or contact Tony on 541 8316.

Mike the best at London Irish Jacob Page Sports Editor
sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Former Waimea Old Boys and Waimea College rugby player Mike Coman has been named Player of the Year by his club London Irish at their end of season awards night. The 29-year-old loose forward made every minute count after moving from Edinburgh at the start of the season. The former Hawke’s Bay Magpie has impressed many including chief executive Bob Casey who played for the club for a decade and described Mike on the team’s website as the one player he would most liked to have played with during his tenure. Mike says he’s loved his debut season and was thrilled with the top honour. “My first reaction was surprised as there were plenty of talented players who I
thought it would get it before me. After that I felt very proud, honoured and obviously extremely happy to be awarded player of the season. I have just been really trying to enjoy my rugby at London Irish and have fun with it. We have a good group of boys and an awesome coaching team who are extremely encouraging and positive all the time which makes the environment a really nice place to be.” Mike says it vindicates the summer move, “I feel really happy with the move from Edinburgh. Rugby wise, I had some good times and Edinburgh is an amazing city to live in but felt it was the right time for a new challenge. At first, my wife and I were a little hesitant to move as we didn’t know whether we would enjoy living in London but we both love it. Plus the weather is a lot nicer which helps. “The upcoming offseason
will be spent celebrating his marriage while travelling. “Lauren and I have a busy summer planned after the last game on the 24th. We have about five weeks off so we are heading to Croatia, Ibiza and then the Maldives for our honeymoon which will be brilliant. Mike says he’d like one more season with Waimea Old Boys but it won’t be for another couple of seasons. “I have another two years on my contract with London Irish so I want to play as well as I can for them and enjoy my time at the club. After that who knows, I’m getting a little older now so will wait to see how the body is feeling after another two years. I definitely want to get a season in at Waimea Old Boys. Richmond is home to me and Waimea is the club I grew up playing for and I would love to play there with both my brothers at some point.”

Waimea College adventurers second in Hillary Challenge Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Waimea College’s adventure racing team recorded its best result in three Genesis Energy Hillary Challenge finals when they finished second at the Hillary Outdoor Centre in Tongariro. Twelve teams of eight, year 12-13 students contested the five-day final which featured two days of outdoor challenges, a two-day rogaine and a one-day multi-sport race held in atrocious conditions on Friday. Waimea showed skill
and initiative to finish second behind New Plymouth Boys and Girls in the two days of group challenges and then held on tenaciously to that position during the rogaine and multi-sport event. Although the team of Maggie McLean, Brooke Robertson, Maddie Mitchell, Cameron Jones, Ryan Doyle, Theo Smith, Luke Born and late recruit, Sacred Heart’s Taylor Simpson had plenty of speed and fitness, teacher and coach Jane Orbell says it was their outdoor skills and teamwork that gave them an
edge over every team except New Plymouth. “They had a good skill set which meant they did really well in all the group challenges on the first two days,” Jane says. “They also had a good team spirit and were always positive and having a lot of fun and that helped too.” Jane says Cameron’s map reading skills on the rogaine and allround strength gave the team a big advantage. The Coast to Coast winner invariably carried the biggest pack and helped his teammates out on the mountainbiking
and the trekking. “Cameron did an excellent job of navigating with help from Theo and Luke. He did a lot of planning when they camped out on the first night of the rogaine and that helped them really charge on the second day.” Jane says the team showed plenty of character overcoming injuries and illness to get through the wet, cold and muddy multisport race. Team members needed taping on their legs after losing tracts of skin during the rope challenges while others suffered severe stomach problems on the last day.
“They were so tough on that last day. It was horrible and some of them were feeling terrible but they stayed composed and kept going - I was very proud of them.” Jane says it is their best result at the Hillary Challenge after previously finishing fourth and eighth. Waimea has automatically qualified for next year’s final and Jane is hoping for another strong showing with six of the team still in year 12. Waimea College recorded 3129 points to finish second behind New Plymouth on 3750 while Thames was third on 3027.

Waimea Combined coach Glenn Grant is hoping his team has gained some “self-belief ” after beating St Thomas’ of Canterbury 40-29 in their UC secondary schools rugby championship game at Waimea on Saturday. Waimea showed superior speed and skill to outclass a bigger St Thomas team scoring six tries on its way to its first win in the championship. But Waimea also showed it could match the big St
Thomas pack in the set pieces and at the breakdown and that, more than anything, laid the foundation for Waimea’s win. “We were much better at the breakdown this week and that’s where the game is won or lost,” Glenn says. “We were quicker to the breakdown and, once we got there, we showed more intensity and protected our ball really well. “Our set pieces were good too. We dominated the scrums and lineouts and scored one of our tries off a tighthead.”

WEDNESDAY 17 May 2017
Glenn says the loose forwards, Reuben Chubb, Josh Grant and Caleb Delaney, were the key to Waimea’s improvement at the breakdown while lock Joe Sharland helped his team dominate the lineouts. Elusive fullback Mattie Stevenson was the backline’s best attacking weapon, scoring three first half tries as Waimea raced to a 33-12 lead at the break. Waimea plays Burnside in Christchurch this Saturday and Glenn believes
they will be going into the game with more confidence after beating St Thomas. He says they are targeting Burnside as one of the teams they can beat. “We have a lot of young guys in our team and I think, now that we have a win under our belt, it will really help their self belief.

We have the game plan and the fitness to run a few of the teams around and all we need is the confidence to do that.” Waimea Combined 40 (Mattie Stevenson 3, Reuben Chubb, Jan Lammers, Josh McPherson tries, McPherson 5 conversions)St Thomas 29. Half time: 33-12.

Nelson Giants face must win game against Hawks Jacob Page Nelson Giant Ali Granger took more than his share of blame for the 76-71 loss to the Super City Rangers in the National Basketball League. The result means the semi-finals become almost impossible with two matches against table-topping Wellington Saints still to come. Ali, who started the game, says an error on his part hurt his team. “It was a crucial mistake by me at the end - I missed a crucial box out and that sort of thing is going to kill us and it did.” That missed opportunity came with the Mike Pero Giants down
two with under one minute to play. “When things are going well those 50-50 plays go your way, this season has been tougher and it means things like that seem to go against us more often.” The team now looks to keep their faint top four hopes alive with a win over the Hawke’s Bay Hawks at the Trafalgar Centre this Friday night. Ali says the effort and energy in the third quarter of the game with the Rangers, where the Giants out scored their visitors 3318, was what the team needed for all four quarters. “That energy was awesome for that 10 minutes but if we managed it over 40 minutes we’d be
beating everyone in the league. “It’s a case of moulding all that together and making it work.” Centre Morgan Grim agreed that the Giants had all the right pieces to get on a roll but they struggled to maintain intensity and energy for four quarters. Aussie import Kyle Adnam sat out the game with injury but indicated post-match he felt he was seven days away which could give him an outside chance of playing against the Hawks. Captain Sam Dempster sat out the key minutes in the fourth quarter after picking up a knock but appeared to be fine postmatch. The game against the Hawks tips off at 7pm.

Titans put on winning show Jacob Page Federal Titans underscored their Nelson hockey division one title credentials with a 3-1 win over the Young Feds at the Saxton Hockey Turf on Saturday. It was the experience of the Titans which eventually won the day. It was an even first half with the faster, younger side matching it with the Titans who were stacked with New Zealand Masters players. The 1-1 score line at halftime gave way to a more dominant effort from the Titans. Stu Beach was one of the sparks for the veteran side as they scored two goals in the second half to ensure they earned a crucial win. In the other senior men’s match Stoke got the better of Waimai United after a similar second half effort.
The scores were locked at 3-3 at the break but Stoke got two goals late in the match to prevent Waimai from getting even a share of the spoils after the team, which was promoted to the top division last year, gave a strong account of themselves. The division one men’s matches are also different this year because women are allowed to play for teams if they get a dispensation. Nelson Hockey is trying the initiative to entice players to stay in the sport and ensure that women’s players still have a good standard of hockey. The two remaining top flight women’s teams play in the men’s second division with Federal Women beating Federal division two men 2-1 while Tasman women went down to Waimai United 5-2 in another competitive match.

Waimea senior teams have win and a loss Simon Bloomberg Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys senior B had a game they “would rather forget” losing to Riwaka 27-12 in their Nelson Car Company division two rugby game at Riwaka on Saturday. Waimea trailed 22-0 after a disappointing first half when it was plagued by handling errors and a failure to support the ball carrier. Although Waimea rallied to dominate the second half, it was too little too late as Riwaka held on to record its second win and jump to the top of the leader board. “We were only going in ones and twos in the first half,” Waimea coach Scott McKenzie says. “We made plenty of line breaks but didn’t have the support there to carry it on. “We were also guilty of poor handling at times. It was a game we’d rather forget - we
went back a step from last week.” However, Scott says the team responded to an honest discussion at halftime to outscore Riwaka 12-5 in the second half when Ben Jeffery and Epalahame Toia scored tries. Fullback Liam Kerr and flanker Travis Clare produced standout performances for Waimea. Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys senior A unleashed a second half onslaught to secure a 37-26 win against Waitohi in their NPD Tasman Trophy division one rugby match at Endeavour Park in Picton on Saturday. Waimea scored three first half tries to lead 18-5 at the interval before racing out to a 37-5 lead after 60 minutes. Although the game was effectively all over, Waitohi scored three late tries to gain a bonus point.
