Cannabis cake served Andrew Board
A Nelson restaurant is alleged to have mistakenly served a cake laced with synthetic cannabis to a group of diners, leaving six of them in hospital. But police won’t be pressing
charges because of “insufficient evidence”. A dinner reservation was made for nine people at The Waka Restaurant and Bar in early July to celebrate the birthday of one of the diners. The woman who reserved the
table was told, when making the booking, that they were entitled to a complementary birthday cake. When she inquired about the cake offer after their meal, the waitress said she wasn’t sure but went to the kitchen and came
back to confirm there was a cake for them. It was promptly delivered, with candles, before being cut and served to the guests. Diner Nicola Nish says the cake “tasted weird”. “It was like a carrot cake with chocolate icing, but everyone said
it tasted weird and most didn’t finish their piece.” After the dinner, and about two hours after eating the cake, the group’s sober driver began to feel numbness down the side of

Race to Rio inspires pupils Simon Bloomberg Brightwater School pupils got a glimpse of how much hard work and dedication it takes athletes to get to the Olympics after completing their Race to Rio Challenge. The school’s 305 children, along with teachers and even some enthusiastic parents, took part in the challenge aimed at walking, running or biking the distance from Nelson to Rio as part of their study of the Olympic Games. They completed the challenge last Thursday when students clocked up the 23,884th lap of the school’s 0.5km long cycle trail for an impressive total of 11,942km in 18 days. Principal Gerald Baldwin says whole school competed in the challenge with all 305 pupils completing at least three laps of the cycle trail in a mass walk every lunchtime. However, Gerald says many of the children were so inspired after watching the Olympics that they walked, ran an cycled hundreds of extra laps.

his arm and that his heart was beating a lot faster than normal. Fearing a major health problem, his wife Nicola called an ambulance. Tests at Nelson Hospital confirmed that he wasn’t having a heart attack, but that he tested positive for synthetic cannabis. By the end of the night another five members of the group were hospitalised with the same symptoms. All tested positive for the drug that was made illegal in 2014. The other three diners either didn’t eat the cake or simply thought they feeling the affects of alcohol. The positive urine tests were handed to the Ministry of Primary Industries

But police say they won’t be pressing charges. “While police believe it is highly likely that these people were served a
cake that was laced with cannabis, there is insufficient evidence to prove this. The people involved underwent tests, which confirmed the presence of cannabis. Unfortunately, at the time of reporting, no cake was seized for examination.” Nicola says she is disgusted with what happened. “One of the other sober drivers was on her way home and had to pull over because she was getting blurred vision while driving. It was really dangerous and could have been much worse.” The Waka Restaurant and Bar owner Francis Monopoli was approached for comment by Waimea Weekly but could not be reached and did not return messages.

“We started on the first day of term three and anticipated we’d get there on day 17 but we made it by day 14,” Gerald says. “We even had kids getting out there before and after school and at the weekend doing laps.” Gerald says the challenge became “pretty competitive” with teacher Sandra Barrett “sneaking out the back of her classroom with her kids” to do some laps to try and win the weekly award for the class with the most laps. He says there were some impressive statistics recorded during the challenge with Room 11 completing 1880 laps in the penultimate week and pupil Chey Samuels averaging an amazing 90km a week for the first two weeks. The top two pupils from each class received medals for their achievements at a closing ceremony last Thursday. However, some of the younger pupils may have found the challenge a little overwhelming with Gerald saying “a few of the year one’s asked me ‘are we there yet’ on the first day’.” The school completes its Olympic-themed activities with its own Olympic Games this Friday.

Lakes-Murchison’s long-serving councillor Stu Bryant is the only sure thing in the Tasman district local body elections to be held in October. Stu was the only candidate for the Lakes-Murchison ward when nominations closed last Friday and will be elected unopposed. However, there is plenty of competition in the mayoral race and other wards with three nominations for mayor and 27 nominations for the 13 places on council.

Private car park gets painted over On the face of it, the “no parking” signs put up behind a Richmond business seem to be doing drivers with a mobility sticker out of a car park, but it appears The Indian Cafe are just trying to reclaim what’s theirs. The car park behind the Queen St restaurant is leased by the business, but was recently painted to look like a mobility car park. The business has complained to Tasman District Council, which is investigating the painting. “We have checked with our contractor and it was not them, so we’re continuing to look into how and why the markings were painted on this space,” says a council spokesperson.

Richmond baby could need 16 open heart surgeries Andrew Board Editor
andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz
In the hours after the birth of her “miracle child”, Kayla Simpson was worried, not just for the life of her new daughter, but also her mother. Downstairs in the special baby unit, at Wellington Hospital, her new-born daughter was fighting for her life after she was born with a missing valve in her heart, as well as a hole in it. Upstairs in intensive care unit, her mother was also fighting for her life after a massive aneurism. Ten months on, the Richmond mother is all smiles as she speaks about her family. “I’m just grateful for what I do have. I have a beautiful daughter and I still have my mother.” Her mother suffered some brain damage after the aneurism which has affected her short-term memory. Kayla says the aneurism was one of the biggest seen at Wellington Hospital and it’s just amazing that she is still alive. “A normal aneurism, they do five or six coils to stop the bleeding, mum had 16 coils.”
Payton after her first open heart surgery.
As for Payton, the miracle child, she continues to prove she’s worthy of that title. Payton was only born at Wellington Hospital because Kayla and her husband Andrew were there to support her mother, who was transferred to the capital for treatment after her aneurism. The stress of her stricken mother brought on her labour and Kayla gave birth four weeks early. It turned out to be a blessing with Payton requiring urgent specialist care that Wellington can provide, but Nelson Hospital cannot. “When she was about ten hours old, Payton turned blue in front of the midwife, so she just sounded the alarm and rushed our baby away,” says Kayla. “We were like ‘what’s going on?’ We didn’t see her for a few hours and Andrew and I got called into this room where there were probably about 15 doctors and nurses. Knowing that mum was upstairs fighting for her life, they said, ‘look, we hate to do this, but your baby has a hole in her heart and unfortunately she was born with a very rare heart condition called Type 1 truncus arteriosus’.” That meant that Payton needed open heart surgery to insert a new valve. But, because she was only five pounds when she was born, the doctors wanted to wait until she had put on more weight. The next ten days involved Kayla trying to feed her daughter as the doctors continually monitored her at Starship Hospital in Auckland. When the time was right, Payton was given a live transplant donation from another baby who had recently passed away. Kayla says Payton will need open

At every open heart surgery there is a 50/50 chance she could not come out of it.” Kayla says the reason that Payton was first given the “miracle child” title is that she didn’t think she could carry children. “The fact that she is even here is amazing.” The past year has been an emotional battle for Andrew and Kayla, but she says she “doesn’t have
time for a breakdown”. “My mum needs me, Payton needs me, Andrew needs me. I think Andrew and I are also positive people so we look at the bright side of things. Mum is here, Payton is here, what else could you ask for? “There are a lot of families worse off than we are, that’s why we don’t do the ‘poor us’. I think if anything, it’s made our family stronger.” And helping the Simpsons smile has been Heart Kids, a national charity that provides support for

2800 children and families each year. This month is Heart Kids Awareness month and Kayla says she wanted to share her story to help raise awareness for the charity that attracts no government funding. “That’s why we’re so keen to support Heart Kids, because they’ve been so good to us and our little heart warrior.” To donate to Heart Kids visit www.helpingheartkids.org.nz or text HEART to 2427 for a $3 donation.

Track can’t be fully restored Andrew Board and Kate Russell The Dun Mountain Trail may be too damaged to allow vehicle access on it again with the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust now looking at alternatives. The sanctuary built its pest-proof fence below the 150 year old trail last year which caused the trail to slip during a heavy rainfall event in March 2015. The trust was able to repair the trail for walkers and bikers, but geotechnical experts have told them there isn’t enough bench left to reinstate the trail to accommodate vehicle access, without a significant engineering solution. That could include a boardwalk structure with pilings down to the bedrock. The trust’s acting chair Derek Shaw says the trust is now exploring its options. One option involves using the fence bench below the trail. In an email passed on to Waimea Weekly, Derek wrote: “The trust is exploring with council whether it might be the most practical solution in the future for motor vehicle access to the Third House area to be accommodated via the fence bench track rather than seeking to fully reinstate the Dun Mountain Walkway/Trail.” The three options he outlines for a new route are: from Four Corners to Third House, from Marsden Valley to Jenkins Hill to Third House or from the sanctuary’s visitor centre to Jenkins Hill and then Third House. Derek told the Weekly that the trust has been in contact with parties that require occasional vehicle access to Third House to understand whether the fence track could meet their needs. He says that most parties have now indicated that they would prefer to use the fence track because it provides better track access. “The reality is that our only solution at the slip site is to build an elaborate structure with deep piles that would not retain the historic nature of the Dun Mountain Railway formation. “We know that this isn’t going to please the people who want to see it reinstated for vehicles, either.” Derek says the trust will continue to explore alternatives for the track, and they are working on preparing a report for Nelson City Council.

Flash mob at Mall: As soon as the music started up in the Richmond Mall, food court diners knew something was happening. That something was an all boys dance crew from Waimea Intermediate School who took part in a flash mob this afternoon. Waimea Intermediate teacher and the groups choreographer, Penny Richards, says she was incredibly proud of the group, which has been part of a mindset change within the school that has seen boys involved in dance gaining popularity. The group, which is known as RTT – Richards Top Team, performed twice for a crowd of proud parents and members of the public who showed their appreciation of the performance with a loud round of applause.

Winter Special
Helping hand warmly welcomed Children at Futures Early Education have been keeping nice and warm on these frosty mornings thanks to a new Richmond-Waimea church group and one dedicated knitter who knitted 30 pairs of woollen slippers for the Richmond pre-school. The Love In Action group, which was formed last year and comprises representatives from 12 churches between Richmond and Wakefield, has been helping out with gardening and landscaping at Futures Early Learning as one of its community projects. So when the mornings started getting a little chilly, head teacher Jo Rowland asked the group if it could help out with some winter warmers. The group found a willing knitter in one of the church

members Margaret Green and she quickly produced 30 pairs of tiny slippers. The slippers were delivered to the pre-school last week and Jo says “the children just love them”. “We’d done a few things with the group so we asked (church member) Alex Johnston if he could help,” Jo says. “Margaret only took two weeks to knit the slippers so it’s been wonderful and it’s also a good way of connecting with the community.” All the slippers have different coloured pompoms so that the children can identify their own pair when they arrive at the pre-school.
Come in for a luxury 1 hour facial and restore your skin in August or September for a special price of $70 (normally $90) Every client who comes in for the winter facial special will go in the draw to win one of two Pure Fiji island retreats. Hopefully this will get us all through the winter.
And now Margaret is knitting a family of woollen dolls for the children with the retired librarian saying she enjoys the knitting because “it’s nice to be busy and have a purpose”. Love In Action is also preparing for its next project with a Single Parent’s Pamper Day planned at the Richmond School Hall for Saturday, September 10. Alex says the day is for single parents and will feature free cosmetic make-overs, manicures, hair dressing, family photos and health-related checks. There will also be free coffee and muffins and a free car wash, courtesy of the churches’ youth groups, and basic car check by a qualified mechanic. All single parents are welcome to attend.

“Move in when you can still enjoy it.” Life is brighter since Marjorie moved into her spacious serviced apartment at her Summerset retirement village. Marjorie has always lived an active life, yet living in the family home was beginning to feel a little quiet. “My son Graeme was concerned I was rattling around on my own. One day he said ‘Just come down and see the village for yourself.’ And I thought well, I have got nothing to lose.”
“I’M PLEASED I DIDN’T LEAVE IT TOO LATE.”
Since moving into her serviced apartment you’ll find Marjorie zipping around to catch up with friends, taking part in the many activities on offer or reading the newspaper in the sunny library.

School opens innovative Learning Centre A new classroom opened at Westmount School near Richmond shows that education has “moved on from the lecture-style classes, wooden tables, hard chairs, blackboards and a sit up straight and face the front approach to a more flexible style of learning”. The Exclusive Brethren School’s new Learning Centre was officially opened by Nelson MP Nick Smith on Friday. The innovative classroom has a range of colour-coded learning spaces for collaborative, semi-collaborative and focused work and is designed to encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning. Head student Tina Lewis says they had been working in smaller areas without clearly defined zones which often resulted in “conflicting conversations” between students in the quiet and collaborative learning areas. Tina says the new Learning Centre will eliminate that conflict and also provide an inspirational space for self-directed learning. “In school today, it is important what we learn, but more importantly the way

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz in which we learn. We have moved on from the lecture style classes, wooden tables, hard chairs, blackboards and the sit up straight and face the front approach to a more flexible style of learning. “ Tina says the versatile space will allow students to “prepare for when we leave school and enter the workplace. We are able to use our own initiative, make our own choices and integrate positively with those around us, giving us, as students, a taste for what we will experience in the workplace”. “We learn to time-manage, prioritise, and take action for our own learning which is passed down through the students as we move through the school. These are all skills that are essential in life and therefore the earlier we learn them, the more prepared we will be for the workplace.
“As Benjamin Franklin said ‘tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn”, therefore by being more adaptable in our way of learning we are able to teach, mentor and be involved helping us to be high achievers.” Westmount regional principal Hugo Vaughan says the Learning Centre will support a self-directed learning model and help build a community of learners. It will encourage life-long learning and work habits and promote a collegial working environment for teachers. However, Hugo says the Learning Centre is only one part of the learning equation for the school’s 150, year three to year 13 students. He says the school also benefits from having exceptional staff and students who help create a good learning environment. Nick praised Westmount’s decision to open an innovative new classroom saying “there is no better investment that society can make than the education of our young”. He also welcomed the contribution that Westmount makes to the “diversity of schools in this country”.

Richmond resident Lynne Clark finally met her pen pal of 62 years earlier this year when she and her husband made the journey across the ditch to Australia. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
Pen pals meet after 62 years Jessie Johnston Lynne Clark was 11 years old when she first picked up a pen and wrote to Elleanor Kil, in what has become a 62-year-long pen pal friendship. “Way back then the Women’s Weekly had a children’s page in it and they used to put in people looking for pen friends,” says Lynne, who now lives in Richmond. “For some reason I thought, ‘I’m going to have a look at this,’ so I went through the list and I saw Elleanor’s name there, she was a couple of year’s younger than me and I thought ‘I’ll write to her’.” While Lynne lived in New Zealand, Elleanor was across the ditch in Australia, her home being one of about four or five in the area and they had their mail delivered by train. “She said when it was mail day she always used to race to the box to get the letters,” says Lynne. “When we first started writing they were big letters, around four or five pages of all sorts of things and as soon as the letter had arrived from one of us, we’d sit straight down and write one straight back, but as the years went on it sort of got a bit less, we all had busy lives but we still kept in touch.” When Lynne and her husband Barry decided to make a trip to Australia earlier this year to see family, Lynne wrote to tell Ellea-
nor. “I’d written to her saying that we were probably coming over and had given Elleanor my son-in-law’s cell phone number, so Elleanor had contacted him. It all stemmed from there, we got in touch with Elleanor and her husband when we got over there and we had a marvellous time,” says Lynne. Even though they hadn’t seen a picture of each other for many years, Lynne says she knew it was Elleanor as soon as she walked around the corner and “Elleanor knew it was me”. Lynne and Barry had made visits to Australia before, but this time both ladies were determined that they wouldn’t miss the opportunity to finally meet each other in person. “Of course I knew all about her children and everything that had gone on in her life. We knew each other even though we’d never spoken,” says Lynne. “It just felt like she was my sister, it was really lovely. “We never thought it would happen and it’s funny that we never ever thought about ringing each other. I think we’d just been writing for so long and it never entered our heads, we could have spoken on the phone years ago,” says Lynne. Lynne says there have been a lot of similarities in their lives over the years and “now we know each other it’s quite possible we’ll go over there again.”

Appleby prepares for another top fair

Jessie Johnston
Once again, Appleby School will be expecting big numbers to their annual school fair, with preparations well underway for the big day. Being the first fair of spring, the Appleby School Country Fair draws visitors from all over the Nelson-Tasman region. It offers the public a mixture of fresh and home made produce, musical entertainment, a popular silent auction, plenty of kids activities and a
some great options for food and drink. “Visitors enjoy the country atmosphere and have come to know what to expect from our fair,” says organiser Laura Southward. “So we stick to that, making only minor adjustments each year to ensure we are continually improving on what we offer.” Last year, the event’s funds helped the Board of Trustees complete some projects towards the school’s long term
landscaping and beautification plan, including colourful battened fencing and a new artificial turf tennis court. To stay up-to-date with all the Appleby School Country Fair news, see and like the Facebook page and be ready for a full-on day of fun on Saturday, September 3. As usual, the school will have plenty of traffic marshals on hand to ensure there’s a safe car parking spot for everyone. The fair will start at 11am and will proceed rain or shine.

Why do we have to be so vitriolic to other parents about their choices if they aren’t what’s recommended or in line with your own choices. I know I struggled like hell with the decision to vaccinate my kids. Any good parent should research anything manufactured they’re giving their child. That’s called good parenting. If you’re just blindly giving your child something because someone said so, then I think you need to open your eyes, and yes, my children are vaccinated. But it was not an easy choice. Andrea Jones. Not immunising is neglect and should be treated as such. Alistair Brownlie. Fantastic article, thanks for having the courage to present

the side of the non-vaccinators with clarity and without judgement. Very rare for the media these days. The last lines sum it up nicely - forcing a person to put something into their body that they don’t want to put there IS a terrifying thought, and where DOES it end? I really wonder about the short-sightedness of those who bully and push for mandatory vaccination. Kudos to you. Erin Evis. Great article. Thank you for presenting a point of view with no judgement. Those involved in the creation and management of Lower Queen Street Health include Mike Roberts, Bridget Castle, Janette Haunch, Shaun McKenzie-Pollock, Jane Green and Ben Castle, who attended the centre’s fifth anniversary celebration last Friday night. Since the very beginning, when the concept for Lower Queen Street Health was first put forward, the multi-disciplinary centre has proved a success. Now those who were involved in its establishment and those who work
within it are celebrating five years of quality, integrated health care. “I’d had experience with multi-disciplinary medical centres when I lived in Rotorua and I’d seen how well that worked conceptually, so we thought that it would be a good thing to have

in the Richmond area,” says Ben Castle, who is one of several investors behind Lower Queen St Health. “It was embraced by some people very quickly while more people came on board as it gained traction. We were fortunate in having a building designer who had experience in the health sector overseas and we were fortunate in finding this sizeable site in a sunny location.” In fact, the centre was fully tenanted from its inception and even after the building was completed, a new suite had to be added to accommodate a local dental business. Those occupying the complex include 10 fulltime businesses, being Tasman Medical Centre, Tasman Dental Centre, Healthcare NZ, Fry’s Pharmacy, Matthews Eyewear Eyecare, Richmond Physiotherapy, Triton Hearing, Medlab South and the Vanilla Bean Café. The centre also features a specialist suite that encompasses

Serving our community for the last five years
Lower Queen Street Health Centre is a diverse collection of health professionals all working within one building and offering a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for patients of all ages. a number of specialty groups. “The idea with this suite was to enable the specialists and providers who offer session work to have a base within the Richmond area, with the efficiencies of co-sharing a waiting room and office area,” says Ben. The specialist suite includes a paediatrician, an ear, nose and throat surgeon, dermatologist, sleep treatment specialist and the Skin Institute. While there is such a diverse collection of health professionals working within one building, Lower Queen Street Health has developed into a contented co-habitation that is not only capable of providing comprehensive health care services, but offers a welcoming, unintimidating atmosphere for patients of all ages. The convenience of the centre is undeniable, not only is it well-positioned for where the population growth in the region is occurring, being an integrated health care model means people can make one trip for all their health care needs. Whether it’s a checkup with their GP, getting their medication from the pharmacy, receiving a hearing or eye test, or meeting with a special-
ist. Plus, with the inclusion of an on-site café and professional, contemporary service, Lower Queen Street Health is nothing like the sterile medical environment that has many dreading a doctor’s visit. As well as celebrating the last five years of the complex, this milestone also offers the perfect opportunity to think about where the centre is moving in the future. The immediate plan, which is now virtually complete, is to create more space for people to park, car parking being the centre’s only main problem so far due to its popularity within the community. The site, which is 1000 square metres, sits next door to Lower Queen St Health, by the entrance way to Club Waimea and has the capacity for a further 30 cars. “We’re now looking at options to integrate that area with the Lower Queen Street Health building,” says Ben. “We’re also looking at ways to add on to that site with a smaller building, one that will be compatible and co-habit well with the centre, in order to allow for the natural expansion that we anticipate within the area.”

Last Friday, the occupants of the centre gathered to mark its fifth anniversary. “It was an opportunity to get together and celebrate the fact we have all embarked on this journey together, which has been a really successful and enjoyable one, and to celebrate the fact that this is a happy working
environment. It’s a comforting place for people to come to and we all look forward to the future which we think is bright for the region and this site,” says Ben. Brittany Spencer If somersaults and sunshine are your thing, Tahuna is going to be even more fun this summer. Pro Kart’s Nick Fowler is in the process of introducing a new outdoor trampoline park to Tahunanui. The new addition is set to be around 600m2 and packed with trampolines and activities in the spot between the beach, Pro Karts and the Megaslide. “It’s going to be really colourful with people jumping everywhere and a beautiful landscape, it’s the perfect place to have it,” says Nick. With 50 to 60 trampolines to jump between and plenty of additional activities, Nick says it’s going to be a great activity for Nelson. “We’ll have basketball hoops where you can slam dunk from the trampolines, we’ll have a dodgeball area where you can
bounce around trying not to get hit, airbags so people can practice somersaulting, plus we’ll run our bungey trampoline, climbing wall and bring in a whole lot of bouncy castles, so it should be a pretty cool place to come to.” Nick says it’s all up to the council now, but everything is on track and approval should go through within a fortnight. “We have been planning and in talks with the council for close to 12 months. “My final submission goes to council this week, which should then get the big green tick. “We’re really excited, obviously there’s still a lot of work to do but it’s great to get to this point and gear up to go to the next phase.” The outdoor trampoline park is set to be up and bouncing in time for Christmas and the summer holiday season. Rugby From the presidents pen Prizegiving In this issue we start to introduce Club Waimea’s Board members, who also give freely of their time to help run our Club. Later this month they, the executive committee and invited members will meet in a planning session to chart our future direction. We expect many different Lewis Della Bosca views will be expressed, there will not be unanimous agreement on all matters, but that is a sign of strength, not of weakness. We have many members, many interests, many opinions and it is this diversity brought together in one club that makes us strong. One member recently commented to me, “I’ve been coming here in the evenings during the week and I’m always amazed by how many groups and organisations are using our meeting rooms, it’s like we’re a de-facto town hall.” Indeed, our Club is very much part of the community! Many interests, one club - CLUB WAIMEA.
The Club Waimea Rugby section held their 2018 Super 18 rugby tipping presentation last Sunday at Club Waimea. This year was a record year with 45 mixed competitors taking part. Some of the tipsters had to fight hard to get points as the Super 18 games winning margins were very big, with a few draws thrown in and the inclusion of other sports that made it very hard to get the right margins and points. The presentation was well supported with many trophies and other prizes to be won and with record numbers, it made it a big challenge for everyone to try and get up in the top four and stay there in the winners circle. Big thanks to all competitors for their support with the Super 18 and hope to see you support it again next year. In first place was Lewis Dellabosca, followed by Gordon Winterburn in second place, Barry Highet coming third and Mike Stronarch in fourth place. Jenny Heywood took out the Top Woman’s Trophy, John Mackle was awarded Brownies Max Points Trophy while the Homes Boys took out the Pink Wooden Spoon for being bottom of the ladder.
Introducing our board deavour to lower his golf handicap. Patrick is married to Rosalie and has three adult children – Nicholas, Thomas and Katie. In 1986, Patrick and Rosalie built a house in Richmond there they continue to reside. John Allan Director A retired self-employed businessman, John is a pastpresident of several cultural and sporting organisations, including the Nelson Bays Rugby Union from 2002 – 2005. An original Board member of Club Waimea, he has been Vice-President and President of the club in the last ten years and is happy to continue offering his service.
Club Waimea was established for the benefit of its members; to provide amenities, cultural activities and the promotion of sports for the clubs’ membership; and to provide an atmosphere where the members may meet and enjoy fellowship with one another.

Patrick Adamson Treasurer and Chairman of the Board Patrick was born and raised in Nelson. He attended Nelson College and then completed a BCom at the University of Canterbury. He then went on to complete his training with Pricewaterhouse in Christchurch. Patrick returned to Nelson in 1985 and joined the firm of Craig, Anderson & Co. At this time he also became Treasurer of Club Waimea and became an active member of the squash section for several years. At this time he was also a regular runner with Waimea Harriers. For recreation these days, Patrick chases a little white ball round the golf course in the never ending en-

The role of the Patron is as a members’ advocate, who may offer support and sage counsel to the Board and the Executive on matters of Policy, Governance and Discipline. In his 40 years of membership, Colin Bowden has involved himself in many of the clubs activities. Colin became convener of the fledging squash section as the plan to build the best courts in the district became a reality. The courts were officially opened in 1981, a moment of pride for Colin. The next sport to take Colin’s attention was Snooker. This also required hands-on involvement as an ardent group of mainly ex-
pool players donated many hours of labour to the creation of a specially-designed room to accommodate the four full-sized tables. He was elected as convener a few years later and also took on the role of secretary following the sudden death of a good mate, Rex Plum. The section showed their appreciation when they granted him a section Life Membership in 2012. Administratively, Colin to put his name forward for

Hot competition in snooker The annual ClubsNZ South Island Snooker Pairs tournament was, once again, a most enjoyable occasion for our section members. This year the event was held in Gore and although the weather was somewhat chilly outdoors, the reception was warm and the competition hot. Waimea’s No.1 team was Nathan Geddes and Ray Denby who were successful in winning the flight event in 2014 and this year they performed at an even higher level to reach the semifinal of the championship itself. On the way they accounted for
several previous winners and gained an appreciative audience as their skilful play became the talk of the snooker room. In the semi, they met a pair from Oamaru who were the eventual championship winners and included an English snooker professional coach who was the dominant individual player at the tournament. Even though beaten at this stage, our boys received generous praise from the victor during the presentation ceremony. Another Waimea pairing which caused some upsets was that of Mark Friend and Shane Geddes.
Seeded at 23rd due to them not having played together at any previous event, these two proceeded to knock off several of the top sides in their section before falling to the 10-time champion pair from Dunedin in the quarter-finals. Our other four teams all had their moments of success, mixed with tight games which went in the favour of their opposition. Without exception, a thoroughly enjoyable time was had by the Waimea players and a good representation at next year’s tournament at the Woolston Club in Christchurch is assured.
The Waimea RSA hosted the Nelson Marlborough Westland RSA AGM on Saturday. Over 50 delegates gathered, including Tasman District mayor, Richard Kempthorne, pictured right, and RSA district president, Derek Nees, left. Waimea RSA’s Ross Norgate said the day gave the many different RSA groups a chance to share their knowledge and take away advice on how to better their services.

Back on bike after chest crush Jacob Page
Nelson motocross ace Max Singleton’s speedy recovery from a freak farm accident has been helped by his growing body and love of bikes. Photo: Jacob Page.
Nelson motocross rider Max Singleton often sits in class and “daydreams” about the horrific farm accident which he has recovered from surprisingly quickly. In February, the 14-year-old was stacking hay on the back of a horse float while his dad Tony was in the car. While Tony wasn’t reversing much quicker than “walking speed” when Max jumped off the back of the float and tripped over due to him wearing his Dad’s gumboots which were too big, Max was soon pinned underneath by an axle. “The axle of the float was on top of me,” he says. “I felt the resistance with the automatic transmission – that was Max curling up underneath the machine. I saw the owner of the farm waving
his hands and, as soon as I couldn’t see Max, I tweaked that he must have been under there,” Tony says. “I remember trying to call out for help but the axle was crushing my chest, so I couldn’t yell very loud,” the Nelson College student says. Max then lost consciousness as Tony rushed to move the float forward to release some of the pressure. “He had a torso crush and the fluid pressure went into his head,” Tony says. “Initially the paramedics thought it was a head injury because his head blew up and you couldn’t see his nose, his eyes were sticking out, but that was from the fluid being trapped and not being able to go anywhere else.” Max was transported by Life Flight aeroplane to Wellington Hospital where he entered intensive care for four days. “I had multiple broken ribs which had gone into my lungs
and I had two vertebrae which I had broken a bit, a broken collarbone, pelvis and stretched the ACL in my knee,” Max says. Doctors told Max he would not be able to compete in motocross for a year because of the ACL injury. However, Max’s love of mountain biking had strengthened his knee and the fact he was only 14 and he was growing into his body meant he had room to recover faster. Max competed at the Nelson Motocross Championships last month and will do the same this Sunday at the Nelson Secondary School Championships at 88 Valley. “My motocross fitness is not there yet, it’s hard to maintain my form for three laps without getting tired.” Max and Tony say they owe a lot to the medical professionals who helped Max.

Swimming: Nelson swimmer Derek Eaton broke two New Zealand records for the M75-79 age group in a South Island short-course meet in Ashburton over the weekend. Coming off a low training base, Nelson’s former Bishop recorded 13min 54.44sec in the 800m, smashing the 25-year-old record by 45 seconds. In the 1500m, Derek sliced four minutes off the old record, recording 25.21.33. He now holds all short-course freestyle records except for the 50m, which will be his target after some intensive sprint training in the weeks ahead.

And veteran Chris Nicholson showed he still has the legs to compete against the South Island's elite riders in the Calder Stewart when he secured the winter series with a nine-race total of
95 points. Chris was super-consistent, winning one race and finishing in the top three in another seven to edge out his Fresh Choice Richmond Pomeroys Tasman Wheelers Calder Stewart team-mate Mikey McCallum (87 points) and Chris Heywood (69 points) - Finn Black won Saturday's race which finished with a climb up the Aniseed Hill. Josh Ryan won the B grade series with 80 points, William Stein won C grade with 71 points while Geoff Gudsell won D grade on 99 points.
Karen Fulton won the women's winter series, winning four races for a total of 103 points to hold off Susie Wood on 80 points and Tania Radman on 71. Intention to amend bylaws for the Abel Tasman Foreshore Scenic Reserve
Public screening of Tasman rivers documentary You’re invited to a public screening of the new documentary about Tasman’s rivers, Our Waters in Common, to be held in Riwaka on Tuesday 30 August. The film examines the amazing things that our local rivers provide us, the issues they face, and how communities and agencies are working together to improve them. It is intended to educate and inspire, and will be used by Tasman District Council staff at a wide range of environmental education events and forums. Date: Tuesday 30 August 2016 Time: 7 pm Venue: Riwaka Rugby Clubrooms Get involved: We’d love to hear your ideas about how we can achieve a greater rate and scale of riparian restoration, the main action that communities can assist with. Contact Trevor James, Ph. 03 543 8562 or email trevor.james@tasman.govt.nz

Our plant stall has a great variety of healthy plants, shrubs and trees to complement your garden. The usual stalls, chocolate wheel, pre-loved clothing are there for you to peruse. Date: Saturday 17 September 2016 Time: 10 am - 2 pm Venue: Hope School, 316 Paton Road, Richmond. Plenty of free parking. Contact: Ph. 035448427 or email countrybazaar@hope.school.nz
Anchor your land with free trees! We are coming to the end of the August planting window and still have a number of poplar and willow poles in 1m to 1.5m lengths available for planting. What’s more they are free to landowners affected by or worried about erosion on their property. The varieties on offer are suitable for a range of purposes including erosion control and fodder. We can match plants to your location and climatic conditions. Available in 1.5m lengths are Kawa, Argyle and Veronese poplar, and Tangoio and Aokautere tree willow. In 1m lengths are Gigantea (osier/ shrub willow). Planting is simple: Keep pole ends wet until planting. Work (or dig) a 60cm hole into the ground with a planting bar (or spade), and compact soil around the pole. For best results plant by the end of August, and keep cattle away until poles have a stem diameter of over 200mm and can withstand rubbing. Please contact our Land Resource Scientist Bernard Simmonds to discuss your requirements. A planting guide will be provided with poles. Email bernard.simmonds@tasman.govt.nz or Ph. 03 543 8446.
NetHui is coming to our backyard NetHui is New Zealand’s most inclusive and diverse internet event - and it’s coming to our neck of the woods on Thursday 13 October. It’s been hugely successful and in the past has been run as one large conference. This year InternetNZ are shaking things up a bit and bringing NetHui out to the regions – and guess what – we’ve got the only NetHui for the South Island. So who takes part in NetHui? Nethui is open and accessible to everyone, and InternetNZ only charges a very small amount for anyone to attend. If you want to know more, including how to register, get involved or become a sponsor – head online to 2016.nethui.nz/. Alternatively, contact Karen Lee, the NRDA Digital Coordinator at karen@nrda.co.nz or Ph. 027 644 9800.
Second Hand Sunday
24 Hour Assistance
Spring clean, declutter and participate in Second-Hand Sunday on 11 September. Register online at tasman.govt.nz (search term “Second Hand Sunday”). What is Second Hand Sunday? Freely given and freely taken away, the goods could include anything from old chairs, books, clothing or left over-bits and pieces from building projects but is not to include food, dangerous goods like faulty electrical equipment, or chemicals. To take part all you have to do is register online on either Nelson City or Tasman District Council’s website, and follow the guidelines. Treasure hunters can then view the list of participating households – which will have the poster on the letterbox – to make the most of the offerings on each Second Hand Sunday.
We need to correct some technical drafting errors within the bylaws adopted last year. The amendment will clarify inconsistencies across sections that made interpretation and enforceability of some of the bylaws difficult. The Administration Committee of Lindsay McKenzie, Chief Executive Officer, Tasman District Council and Roy Grose, Director Operations, Northern South Island Region, and Department of Conservation give notice of the changes under Sect 107 (b) of the Reserves Act 1977. The amended bylaws will be available from 16 August 2016 at the Takaka, Motueka or Richmond offices of Tasman District Council or from the Takaka, Motueka or Nelson offices of the Department of Conservation during normal working hours (post 15 August 2016).
