Flooded ford provides extra work for Frank Simon Bloomberg Reporter

Appleby nurseryman Frank Goeddert has been running his nursery Frank’s Trees on Golden Hills road for 14 years, but the way things have been going this year he should think about changing its name to Franks Trees and Towing Services. Frank’s property is right next to the ford across Eves Valley Stream and every year he gets out his tractor and rope and tows
two or three hapless drivers and their waterlogged cars out of the ford. But this year’s wet winter and spring has meant Frank has been extra busy towing and pushing cars out of the ford which has been almost permanently flooded. “We sit in the office and see a car race past when we know the ford’s too deep, so when it doesn’t come back up the road we know they are stuck,” Frank says. “Then the driver will come walking up our drive asking for a push or a tow so we get the tractor out.
“It’s been worse this year because it’s been so wet and the ford’s been deeper than usual but it still happens every year. Last year, we went down there and there was this guy who got his ute stuck and it was so deep he was sitting on the top of his cab calling for help on his cellphone.” Frank’s latest salvage job was a tradesman’s van that had conked out after crossing the ford last Thursday while earlier in the week someone had left their late model BMW parked in the middle of the road after the engine
had become waterlogged. He has also helped drivers escape cars that have started floating down the stream including “two little old ladies who came back the next day with a dozen beer”. “She gave me the beer and said she’d lost all her savings in Blue Chip and the car was the only thing she had left – she was so grateful.” At times, the Eve’s Valley Stream has been so flooded Frank takes things into his own hands and puts cones across the road to stop drivers attempting to drive
through the fords. “I know it’s probably illegal but you’ve got to do something. There are some real idiots out there who don’t have a clue.” Although his cellphone’s photo gallery is full of amusing images of hapless drivers stuck in the ford before being towed to safety, Frank says the fords can also be extremely dangerous, even when they are dry. Frank and staff from nearby Waimea Nurseries, including Cath Slotemaker, were

Flooded ford FROM PAGE 1 first on the scene at frightening crash last year that could easily have killed the two female occupants. “We were working near the ford and heard the crash and then the yelling,” Cath says. “This car went through the second ford so fast it got airborne and hit the bridge. “A rail from the bridge went through the middle of the car and right between the two girls. They were so lucky - they could have been killed.” Frank says the problem is that many drivers don’t know how to drive through streams, either attempting to get through the ford when it’s too deep or driving too fast and splashing water into the
engine. Frank considers the road signage is also inadequate and it needs to make it clearer that the ford is virtually impassable whenever there is flooding. The sign also fails to inform drivers that there is an alternative route to Golden Hills Rd via Challies Rd. Although Frank’s car salvage sideline is an unwanted distraction from his busy nursery duties, he says he will never leave anyone stranded. “Sometimes you are busy at work or getting ready to go out to a barbecue and someone comes up the drive asking for help. It can be a pain at times but I’m not the sort of person who can tell them to piss off and at least it makes life entertaining”
Richmond gets more police Simon Bloomberg Police will have a bigger presence in Richmond and Motueka from the end of this month when there will be a “realignment” of staff across the Tasman district. The changes follow a review by Nelson Bays Area police that identified a need to increase their engagement with growing communities like Richmond. As a result, senior sergeant Blair Hall and two public safety sergeants Craig Barker and Greg Beer will move from the Nelson station to Richmond from October 30. Blair has just moved out to Wakefield after living in Richmond “on and off for 27 years” while Craig was previously sergeant in charge at Richmond. “We all live, or have lived, here in Richmond which is a big help. In fact, most of our staff here live in Richmond so we are already a part of the community.” Blair says he hopes the staffing changes will mean the Richmond Station’s doors remain open for longer. The station has been intermittently closed because new safety regulations require a constabulary staff member to be present when the front counter is open to the public. See editorial on page 5

It was stocked with all the right gear but nothing was going to stop a small Nelson boat from sinking. Three men were out fishing on a small vessel just a mile from Nelson Harbour on Saturday when their boat started taking on water. The boat then capsized and became submerged, leaving the three boaties floating in the water. Coastguard Nelson president Wayne Harrison says the men had gone out for an early morning fish and were just setting up when one of the guys noticed that his feet were wet. “The next thing he knew the boat was sinking, the back went down, a wave came in and it just went, it flipped them out and they were all in the water.” Wayne says that despite having all the right equipment, including fitted life-jackets, flares, life rings, sufficient fuel, and two forms of communication, it happened so quickly that none of the men had time to raise the alarm.

Fortunately, Coastguard Nelson were just getting ready for their Saturday morning training as the emergency call came in. “We were standing in our training room and our duty officer Geoff Morgan came in and said ‘we’ve got a job’. Two commercial burglaries Burglars broke into Raeward Fresh and Caltex on Salisbury Rd early on Sunday morning. Richmond police senior sergeant Blair Hall says some cash was stolen from Caltex at around 2am while an alarm was activated at Raeward Fresh at around the same time but nothing was stolen. Blair says anyone who sees suspicious activity around commercial properties should report it to police. He says commercial properties are being targeted and the thefts are a reminder for commercial property owners to review their security.

House prices up again The median residential property price in Tasman increased 19.3 per cent to $572,500 compared to September last year, the latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand figures show. That’s significantly higher than the national average increase of just 1.2 per cent. However, the volume of houses sold decreased in Tasman by 37 per cent compared to September last year.

Soldiers from New Zealand will be joined by armed forces from Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Brunei, Malaysia and Timor Leste as well as Australia, Canada, USA, France and Britain in the exercise that starts on Wednesday and runs until November 18. The HMNZS Canterbury will be berthed in Port Nelson on Wednesday and Friday to unload vehicles and supplies for the armed forces.
Simon Bloomberg Nigel Lammas is continuing a family tradition, being appointed as the new deputy fire chief at the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade, 17 years after his father Eddie took on the role. Eddie joined the brigade in 1960 and resigned in 1999, after spending the last nine years as deputy chief fire. And now Nigel has followed in his footsteps taking over as deputy from Blair Hall who has transferred to the Wakefield brigade. Nigel has been a member of the brigade for 27 years after joining on September 16, 1990 although his duties were initially limited to nights and weekends because he worked at Bowaters in Nelson. But once he transferred jobs to Repco Richmond, he became a “daytime” volunteer and

OpiniOn:
Richmond police staff increase good call The decision by Nelson Bays Area police to boost their numbers in Richmond by transferring one senior sergeant and two sergeants from Nelson is welcome news. It has been obvious for many years that Richmond has grown way beyond a rural outpost of Nelson (and in fact is soon likely to overtake Nelson) and needs its own dedicated police presence. Although Nelson-based police had been working hard to cover the Richmond beat, the centralised policing model was clearly not working as well as it should have. Staff were isolated from Richmond community both geographically and socially, making their already tough jobs even tougher. The problem could easily been resolved if the government provided sufficient funds to keep our police operating effectively but that, unfortunately, has not been the case. Police around the country have been unfairly asked to do more with less, leaving leaders like Nelson Bays Area Commander Mat ArnoldKelly to do the best they could without adequate resources. Now, with more police on the ground in Richmond, they will be able to step out the door and walk the beat down Queen St and engage with their community. Instead of stranger-to-stranger policing, it will be locals, who know, understand and live in their community, dealing with locals. Hopefully, the increased staff numbers will also mean that the station is never closed during business hours with a ‘back in five minutes’ sign on the door. Richmond residents expect and deserve that at the very least. So, that’s the theory. Now it’s up to the police and the community to put that theory into practise and make Richmond an even safer place to live, work and play.

Freedom camping area proposal unpopular Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Tasman residents don’t want “ignorant freeloaders” staying in their parks and reserves, with hundreds of public submissions criticising proposed changes to a bylaw that will allow freedom camping in designated areas around the district. The Tasman District Council is proposing changes to the bylaw that will give it more power to enforce freedom camping regulations. It also aims to establish freedom camping areas for nonself-contained freedom campers including Edward Baigent Memorial Scenic Reserve in Wakefield. Council asked for public feedback on the proposed changes and has been inundated with 383 submissions which will be presented to councillors and staff at a series of public hearings around the district, starting at Takaka on October 26. And councillors look to be in for hard time with most submissions objecting to the changes, saying that ratepayers shouldn’t have to pay for public toilets and waste disposal facilities used by for freedom campers. Philip Gaffney sums up the sen-

Although former long-serving Tasman district councillor Trevor Norriss is not against freedom campers, he makes it clear in his submission that only selfcontained freedom campers who “respected” the designated areas should be permitted. mess and cost ratepayers money, and they “should bugger off ”. “I wish to make it quite clear that I support the ability for people to freedom camp at designated spots in our beautiful Tasman district provided they have selfcontained vehicles and have time limits. They (have to) respect the areas designated and don’t leave their rubbish and other crap for others or council to have to clean up, costing ratepayers more money”. A number of the submissions objected to the proposals to permit freedom camping at Edward
Baigent Memorial Scenic Reserve in Wakefield with Stuart McPherson saying, “clearly this bush picnic area doesn’t have facilities to accommodate the many freedom campers”. Stuart says in his submission that the reserve has a popular walking track but “now the mud, rubbish and human excrement (from freedom campers) keeps me away”. Stuart says, “often as many as 20 vehicles are crammed into this small space” and “I’m sure this was not the intended use of the reserve”. The Edward Baigent Memorial
Got some news?
Scenic Reserve was gifted to the district by Maurice Baigent and siblings, in memory of Edward and one of his great, great grandsons. Evan Baigent says in his submission that the proposed bylaw go against Edward’s intentions. “The intent of gifting the bush as a memorial reserve was for the public to be able to enjoy and appreciate the environment of the bush and its surrounds. The deed does allow for some camping in very small numbers, generally no more than two camping tent parties, for no more than two nights. “There was a charge of half a crown per night. It was never the intent that it became a camping ground of major significance to accommodate large numbers of freedom campers.” Evan also says that the banning of freedom camping in many of the council’s reserves will “only encourage even bigger numbers to use the Baigent Memorial Reserve. The current use of the reserve for freedom camping is totally unsustainable - I ask the council to be responsible and close the reserve to all camping.” The submissions will be heard in Takaka on October 26, Motueka on October 27 and the Wakefield Fire Station on October 30, starting at 9am.

Show will go on Judene Edgar Reporter
judene@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The Murchison community have stepped up to save their muchloved annual A&P show, with a view to reaching their 100th show in 2020. An article in the Waimea Weekly last month highlighted the plight of the current committee who were facing the very real possibility that their 98th show would have to be cancelled due to a lack of members. A call had to be made by October 3, and with the deadline looming things weren’t looking good. “It would have been really sad to lose it, but we seriously couldn’t have run it without more members,” says committee member Sue Cooper. However, Sue says she’s delighted that three community-minded locals attended the meeting and a fourth has also kindly offered to
step up and help. Allan James is taking on the critical secretary’s role with Beth MacDonald helping to get the schedule out, and Colleen Pointon has also put up her hand, along with another offer to assist getting sponsorship. “We’re really hoping to get to the 100th, and with their help and some fresh ideas, we will,” Sue says. But there’s no time for celebrating with the equestrian schedule almost ready to go out, and planning for the wood chopping underway, with the Murchison Axemen’s Club playing host to the twoday South Island Championships. New Zealand’s original ‘extreme sport’, woodchopping originated from the forestry industry with axemen and sawyers competing amongst themselves to see who were the best at felling trees and processing logs. Club secretary Dave
McEwen says woodchopping is always a crowd pleaser and is looking forward to hosting clubs from across the South Island for a range of men’s, women’s, veterans and under-21s competitions. “There will be 16 different events including the popular jigger board race, double-handed sawing, axe throwing and standing woodchopping,” Dave says. “We started out years ago just having demonstration events at the Murchison show, but with the committee’s help it moved on to competitions, and now to be able to host the South Island championships is fantastic – it will be a real feature for the show.” The annual Murchison A&P Show will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 with the South Island woodchopping championships taking place on the Saturday and Sunday.

Scammers targeting social media users Judene Edgar Reporter
judene@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Facebook users were caught out over the weekend after a new scam that hacked their accounts spread rampantly via Facebook’s messenger application. Facebook users receive a message saying “It’s you [account holder’s name]” along with a link to a YouTube video. The link is not actually a YouTube video but malicious software (malware) that enables hackers to access the user’s account, capturing their data as well as forwarding the message to all of their contacts. Local businesswoman Lynnette Butler was caught out on Friday after receiving the message from
a friend and hurriedly changed all of her details. “When they come from a friend you tend to get fooled because you have no reason not to trust them,” she says. “I think it reinforces that you need to know how to look out for scams, but also that you need to know what to do if you get hacked,” says Lynnette. Nelson cybersafety consultant John Parsons says, while scams are appearing to become more sophisticated, they still rely on three common approaches greed, curiosity, fear, or all three. “When trying to deceive a person the criminal wants the target to become outcome-focused rather than task-focused,” says John. “If a person receives an email and
in the subject line it reads IRD wants to refund $480 to you, then the recipient is focused on the money, not on the task, which is clicking the links.” It is also harder to monitor as there is no longer “the latest scam” to look out for. Scams are increasingly frequent and sophisticated, and there has been a surge of scams targeting social media sites and a younger, supposedly more tech savvy demographic. NetSafe Director of Partnerships and Technology, Sean Lyons, says even the simplest email scams can appear convincing with personalised addresses and the use of branding and logos. “There is a common misconception that all scams are easy
Hundreds gather for sunrise walk Brittany Spencer Starting in the dark and guided only by torchlight, hundreds of Nelsonians set off on the 2017 Sunrise Walk for Wellbeing on Saturday. Created by locals Pete and Vicky de Jong, the airport perimeter walk begins before sunrise and finishes in the light of day. Alison Browning, who participated in last year’s walk says she doesn’t mind the early start for such a worthy cause. “It gets light so quickly and in some ways that mirrors the men-
tal health journey, you’ll be in the dark for so long and suddenly there’s something that hits you, like the sunrise, and things get better,” Alison says. “It’s a very worthy cause, mental health touches people across the board, there’s no age range, there’s no gender, mental health doesn’t discriminate, and it’s great to see the stigma disappearing.” Alison says the event works as a positive way to destigmatise mental health, offers help to those who need it, and encourages conversation on depression and mental health.

to spot, and that only the less tech savvy among us can fall for them,” Sean says. Murchison woman Alison Dodge received two scam emails this week. The first claimed to be from TradeMe and the second from IRD regarding a GST refund. The TradeMe email “confirms” the user’s purchase and requests them to click on a link to receive a refund if incorrect. “I don’t have a TradeMe account so I deleted it, but the IRD email looked like the real deal so we rang our accountant, but it was definitely a fake,” she says. NetSafe says that $13.4million in losses were reported in 2015 but they are aware that this is perhaps the tip of the iceberg. Inland Revenue’s senior media advisor
Pete van Schaardenburg says in addition to responding to public notifications, they also undertake a lot of proactive work trying to prevent scams. “We have received 138 notifications from the public in the past two weeks, and our IT security service has taken down 11 fake websites hosting the fraudulent form which scam victims were being redirected to.” If you are unsure about an email or link, contact NetSafe on 0508 638 723 or go to www.theorb. org.nz to lodge a report. Queen Street party gives community a ‘First Taste’ Brittany Spencer
Queen St was closed for celebration not construction on Saturday, turning into a big street party for The First Taste community event. The event celebrated the reopening of the first section of the Queen St upgrade with food from around the globe, live music, and cultural performances from the Chinese and Bhutanese communities. Around 1500 people came out to eat, drink, dance, sit, and celebrate in the middle of the ‘new look’ Queen St. Among the crowd was nine year old Nick Whitley who was soaking up every second. “This is one of the best things Queen St has ever had, I love all the dancing and music and how they’ve brought all the food outside.” And among the businesses serving food from street stalls was Sinful Cafe owner Lisa Buchanan, who served up an array of delectable delights to the masses.
“It was fantastic, the street looked great, the concept was great, and it’s something I’d love to see them bring back.” Lisa says it’s great to have the lower end of Queen St open again, especially for the businesses. “I feel so sorry for some of the people down there that really struggled through this, but to see how great it all looks and to see everyone out and enjoying it makes it worth it.” The first stage of the $11million upgrade was completed in July and the second just wrapped up, with a narrower road, larger footpaths, and more seating. Council community partnership officer Lani Evans says that after the disruption of the upgrade, it was great to see everyone come together and experience the new street. “There was this amazing community spirit, it was happy, friendly, a great atmosphere, everyone was connecting and people were saying how great it was for Richmond.”

Cheers Dawnbreakers Being recreational fisher persons, we joined the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club in 2014 to meet new acquaintances and to learn and pick up new tips to catch those elusive snapper. The club provided a relaxed environment on their social day to meet and talk to others who are equally as eager to form new friendships and share their fishing experiences. You do have to allow for a bit of exaggeration amongst the friendly banter of the best fishing stories. These days, the club also provides plenty of extra knowledge from the visiting guest speakers. Most months, the club has an event happening which may involve a trip away, such as our annual O’Kiwi Bay weekend. These weekends are where you truly realise what belonging to a club means. While on the water, everyone looks out for each other and help is there if needed. The VHF radio channel is open, and

banter over the radio is amusing but yet to be confirmed at the end of the day. From sharing a bach, enjoying a beer, discussing fishing spots, tides and what time everyone is leaving to fish in the morning, to enjoying an evening bbq with the catch of the day and of course sharing those many stories. Whether you are a competitive fisherman or just enjoy being on the water, this club offers something for everybody – from young families to the older members, for land-based, kayak, boat, spear or dive members. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club has ticked all our boxes, from meeting new people and making new friendships to increasing knowledge and learning new fishing techniques. Local kids explore Great Taste Trail Jessie Johnston
Nelson and Waimea children took to the Tasman Great Taste Trail on Sunday in search of natural treasures and the chance to get their Kiwi Guardians medal. The day was organised and led by the Tasman District Council, using the Toyota Kiwi Guardians outdoor activities programme. “The whole gist of this is to get people out into our parks and exploring our walking and cycle trails,” says the council’s community partnerships officer, Lani Evans. “Toyota Kiwi Guardians is run by the De-
partment of Conservation and it’s like a treasure hunt where kids go and discover natural treasures.” Families started at Sandeman Reserve, off Lower Queen St, and were guided by council Enviroschool’s coordinator Adie Leng, with biosecurity officer Robin van Zoelen teaching the kids about the pest traps used along the trail. The walk took them to a tiny island, not far from the road to Best Island, where they found the Kiwi Guardian Post. Adie says the walk to the post took around 45 minutes, moving at a leisurely family pace, with participating kids Charlie Perfect
and Elana Weaver describing the trail as “tiring but fun”. Around 35 people took part in Sunday’s guided tours, however families can head out whenever they want by simply going to the DOC website at www.doc. govt.nz/kiwiguardians and printing off a map. Other walks in the Nelson Tasman area include Branford Park, Jimmy Lee Creek, Nelson Lakes National Park and Abel Tasman National Park. Lani says they’ll be holding another walk on November 19, focusing on local history and using actors to help educate people on some of the activities that used to happen in the area.

I am pleased to announce that acoustic baffling is to be installed in the bar/bistro/TAB areas, hopefully before Christmas. For years, the issue of excessive background noise has been the bane of many members, especially those with hearing aids and we are delighted to now be able to address the matter. Not only will the baffling help create a more convivial social Lewis Della Bosca environment, the quality of sound when entertainment is provided should also improve. It is requiring a substantial investment of club funds so here is a challenge for you – let’s have a before and after assessment. To remind yourself of how it currently is, come along to a busy time, perhaps this Thursday for the $1250 members draw, and then again when the work’s been done. Tell us if we’ve made a difference, we want to ensure the money is well spent. The new events sub-committee is doing good work. Bathurst has just been, an exciting Melbourne Cup day is coming up and they’re having a lot of fun planning the Children’s Christmas Party, something that was missing from our calendar last year. Let’s keep supporting these members who give so much of their own time for the benefit of all.

Well, just after the last issue of our newsletter September 19 slipped by and as such the end of my first year as manager of Club Waimea. I have to say it has been a very enjoyable year and I would like to thank all the members that have supported me over this period. I feel we have made considerable headway but I am looking forward to the challenge of bigger and brighter things in the future. The last couple of months have been very busy including the Tapawera School Reunion which was held on Saturday, September 30, with some 320-people attending. There was pressure on all the staff but I feel that they came up trumps, so well done to Phil and his team and also my team, awesome effort. Last weekend saw the Bathurst Supercar event and I guess the Ford contingent are off licking their wounds again but a great day was still had by all. We have lots coming up between now and dare I say it, Xmas, so get your crew together for a fun Melbourne Cup Day and all the entertainment that is heading your way over the ensuing weeks. That’s me for now so again, thanks everyone, I look forward to many more enjoyable years. Cheers, Wayne Williams

Come along to their open evening workshop and let Men in Accord teach you the art of four-part harmony.
Learn four-part harmony with Men in Accord Men in Accord is a silver medal winning small chorus that represented the Nelson/Tasman region in the National Four-Part Harmony Convention last year. They’d like to share their experience and their love of music with others in the community, which is why they’re inviting all you guys out there to their upcoming, Open Evening Workshop. Come along and learn the art of four part harmony singing
in a friendly, relaxed and fun environment on Tuesday, November 14, from 7pm at Club Waimea in the Waimea Room. Men in Accord is lucky to have a number of experienced and musically knowledgeable members who will guide you through some easy exercises and have you singing four part harmony by the end of the evening. Their song arrangements are structured with four separate notes with the inten-
tion to make most chords ‘ring’. These ringing chords are the ultimate in harmony and create a truly wonderful sound which both singers and audiences find irresistible. Why not come along and give it a try? This is a cost-free event, so just you and your voice are required. To register your interest in attending, please call Dave on 540 2178 or go to itson. co.nz and search for Men in Accord for more details.

Just a thought...
Susan Gill Church on the Hill
Do people matter? Some of us are task-focused people and others are people-focused people. Both are good, we need to get stuff done and we need to value people. Tasks don’t get done if people don’t do them - robots aren’t running everything yet. So how do we value people? Paying a living wage is a good start I reckon. I’ve heard so many arguments why we shouldn’t have to do this.
1. It is designed around supporting people who have children which isn’t the case for many especially young people 2. It blows out costs dramatically if you give it to the lowest qualified person in a company since everyone else has their pay based on that. 3. First year workers can be school leavers without qualifications or experience so we would be overpaying. If we paid the living wage first year workers
would be getting 90 per cent of the hourly rate of a starting secondary teacher who is a degree qualified person. A three-year degree should be more than a 10 percent pay premium over a school leaver. I’m sure there are lots more economic reasons for not paying a Living Wage. And yet, what about simple justice? What gives us the right to undervalue people by paying the least
possible amount we can? Especially if we do so in order that the shareholders or business owners can make more money? What does that say about us? Who says we base everything on economics anyway? Jesus said “the labourer is worthy of their hire” and that statement is repeated by the Apostle Paul in his letter to a younger disciple. Surely everyone deserves to be paid enough to be able to enjoy and share the necessities of life?

My adult son has recently moved back home and I’m finding it difficult to manage financially. How do other people make it work? Many people make it work by having boarding agreements. You should not be worse off for having another adult in your home, provided they are paying their way and behaving fairly. Occasionally adult children get stuck in a ‘childs mind-set’ and expect parents to pay for their upkeep. This is not normal or reasonable.
Make a boarding agreement that states expected payments and other particulars: Full board for an adult should be $200-250 per week Note what the board includes and any specific exclusions State how and when the board is to be paid What is the notice period to end the agreement? You can state how the boarder is to contribute with chores/cooking You can include rules about the boarders visitors, noise, pets and other house rules Remember, capable adults are responsible for their own upkeep, regardless of whether they have parents. A sample boarding agreement is on our website: nelsonbudget.co.nz/resources

Action-packed start to speedway season Jody “The Professor” Scott The opening meeting at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway was firing on all cylinders on Saturday night. The stock car grades didn’t muck around getting into action while the super saloon feature produced a dramatic race for the lead that was almost chess-like. A brilliant racing surface that the late Murray Teece would be proud of, the weather played ball with plenty of visiting drivers boosting the numbers. The TQs opened the season's racing. The class has its national championship race in Nelson this February so it wasn’t surprising to see some of the title contenders hitting the ground running. The local contingent has had its numbers boosted with several new drivers making their debut. Luke Dilworth, a former stock car driver, looked impressive in his first outing, while Alicia McLauchlan and Jayden Corkill led the local charge. But it was Canterbury’s Jeremy Webb who took out the feature, Alicia was top local finisher on
third while Jayden won a heat. George Crosbie made a return with his new engine showing good speed, as well. The side-cars were next out. Seven bikes made the opening meeting, the track surface made for good racing, the Aidie Drake/ Kieran Satherley pairing proving too good once again, winning for the third year in a row. The 88n of Shaun Solly/Rosie Taylor showed promise over the night, while the three Blenheim teams got valuable track time before their opening meeting. The super stocks are on the endangered species list, with a number of drivers retiring over the off season numbers are critical, but that didn’t mean much when sparks flew in the opening lap. The two visiting drivers made sure the grade would front and that’s where things got interesting. Jamie Hamilton set the tone early in heat one, pinging high flyer Brett Nicholls into the turn four wall, bending his bumper and retiring him for the race. Hamilton then found the lead to win heat one. The next heat Nicholls showed his pace, leading
Brett Nicholls (48N) in the process of rolling Jamie Hamilton (9C) of Christchurch. Photo: Supplied. from start to finish. Trevor Lineham got a hit from Hamilton, ruining his chances of a podium. This set up the climactic final heat. Hamilton got a shunt from Lineham early on before Nicholls had a crack. The two jostled until Hamilton was sent back into the wall and over, landing on his roof. While that was going on, Alex Hill in his new car continued to chase the points and win the final heat to claim the trophy. Antz Mackenzie claimed 2nd spot with his new machine. Lineham and Nicholls were both excluded
from points in the final heat. The productions were next out, new faces and a few new cars boosted the grade. Tony Diedrichs was the pacesetter on the night, comfortably winning by four points from Eddie Franz and David Allen. Stockcars got into action early on. Eventual winner, Keightley Teece, spent the opening lap sideways down the back straight. Brad Neiman was the leader heading into the final race but a flat tyre and hit on the Greymouth tank saw him retire. The other front runner, Dylan

Clarke, was the first stock car rollover of the season after getting caught near the wall and put over by the other Greymouth visitor. Levi Collier kept it tidy to claim second while a run-off between Brad and Craig Tatnell ended the night's racing, Brad’s experience telling in the end. The street stocks were boosted by the Christchurch quartet. They had a slight speed advantage and some subtle blocking by team mates saw Cantabrian Dave McSherry take the trophy. Bradley Evans kept out of trouble to claim second overall, a pleasing result. The final grade were the super saloons. They provided the speed for the night and regular visitor Mark Osborne is worth the entry fee alone. His final race performance was the highlight of the night, winning ahead of a determined Trevor Elliott. The next meeting is on October 28 with the Coca-Cola fireworks spectacular, plus the sprint cars making their return to the track. It promises to be a cracker of a meeting.

Izzy set to make her international debut Simon Bloomberg
Izzy Neal will be representing New Zealand at the Australian secondary schools athletic champs in Adelaide.
Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Mapua athlete Izzy Neal is hoping her patience will pay off when she finally gets back on track for two big meetings later this year. The talented 16-year-old runner has been frustrated by ankle injuries since winning he 400m at the national secondary school’s champs in Timaru in 2015, in a stunning personal best of 55.84sec. Although she won silver in the 400m at last year’s secondary schools champs, Izzy and her coach Tony Aitkenhead subsequently opted to focus on strengthening her ankles before returning to racing. And the timing is critical because Izzy has been selected for the New Zealand team to compete at the Australian secondary school’s champs in Adelaide from December 8-10. It will be a big test for the Motueka High School student and she is determined to get back to full fitness for her international debut. “I sprained my ankle and then tore a ligament before the South Island champs in 2015,” Izzy says. “I tore it again before national secondary schools and was out for six weeks, but still won gold in
the 400m and ran in our school’s 4x400m relay team that broke the record. “But my ankle kept playing up last year and then I bulged a disc in my back. I ran at the national school’s champs and finished second, but I only ran 57.2sec so I was disappointed. “We decided to miss the South Is-
land and nationals and focus on getting stronger for the end of the year. It’s been frustrating but now I’m even more motivated to come back and race.” Izzy says she has been working with Tony and sports fitness expert Claire Dallison to strengthen her ankles and plans to return to racing at the national second-
ary school’s champs in Hastings from December 1-3. So far, Izzy’s lengthy build-up has been going to plan and she’s optimistic all the hours of conditioning at Catalyst Fitness Gym in Mapua and strengthening work with Claire will do the job. “My times in training are faster than last year so we’re hoping that
translates into faster times in my races. It’s frustrating to think that I set my personal best nearly two years ago, so I’d really like to improve on that.” Izzy says she has received support from Catalyst Fitness and has also received financial assistance for her travel to Adelaide from the Nelson Tasman Sports Trust.

Representatives from five different golf clubs throughout Nelson and Tasman were also there to help participants pick up some skills and discover the appeal of golf.
Llara MacGilloway from Hope was among those taking part and says it was a great opportunity to get out and join a new club, having played the sport before. “It gets you out in the fresh air, you meet lots of people, it’s active, and when you hit that sweet shot it makes the difference, it’s awesome.” Mapua’s Sue Adamson had never played golf before but decided to head along on Sunday as her dad had suggested it, being a player himself. Vianne Wessels of Nelson came along on Sunday based on a recommendation from her uncle. Margaret Whitehead was after
some practice before joining a friend in a charity nine-hole golf tournament. “I didn’t want to make a fool of myself, she might get me hooked, you never know.” A game of snag, using velcro targets, was also set up for children, with the adults taking to the green for some putting and hitting, before playing two rounds on the course. The clubs that took part in the joint event on Sunday were Greenacres, Tasman, Totaradale, Nelson and Waahi Taakaro. Each these clubs will now hold their own follow-up events. For more information on these, contact your nearest club.

Rackley 'humbled' by boxing honour Andrew Board Jeff Rackley rose to his feet and started his speech with a lump in his throat and a tear in his eyes. “Well, this is a shock,” he started. “I’m humbled, I really am.” Jeff had just been appointed patron of the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust in a surprise ceremony at the trust’s Vanguard St gym last Friday. Victory Boxing chair John Armstrong says Jeff was the perfect person to be patron for the group. A man with “mana”, who volunteers his time in the gym and has an unrivalled pedigree in the sport. Since leaving his job as a real estate agent in March, Jeff is in the gym five times a week and even travels to tournaments with some of the younger fighters. Coordinator Paul Hampton says having that experience is invaluable. “Jeff is a guy who people in the gym look up to. He’s happy to offer a bit of advice and generally help out. I heard him talk to some Waimea Intermediate students a couple of weeks ago, talking about respecting others and how the gym is an important space. He said having a place like this would have been fantastic when he was growing up.” Jeff started boxing training while still at primary school and was famously coached by his father Les, who helped

At Kayak HQ we love to go kayaking. Part of the attraction is that you can do so many different things in a kayak. You can paddle down rapids on the river, or glide across a glassy lake. Each style of paddling will have a different appeal, and will take you different places.

Jeff and his three brothers to multiple national boxing titles. Jeff says he enjoyed boxing as a youngster and went on to fight in 100-odd amateur fights and seven professional bouts. He won the Jameson Belt three times for being the most “scientific” boxer at the national championships and fought in the last 15 round professional fight in the country, a fight he won. At 22, he represented New Zealand at the Munich Olympic games as a boxer, before he came back to teach physical education at Nayland College. Two years in the UK followed where he played rugby and cricket, two sports he represented Nelson at, including a famous game against Australia

at Trafalgar Park in 1972. As a rugby player Jeff was a flanker or hooker and in cricket, an opening batsman. When he came back to Nelson after his time in the UK, Jeff worked at the now-defunct Nelson Fisherman's Co-op before buying the Black Cat dairy with his wife Karen. They owned that for two years before they reached an agreement to buy the Prince Albert Hotel. They sold the dairy to make the deal happen, only for it to fall through. That led Jeff to the real estate game where he started at Harcourts before founding Haven Reality with Darryl Marshall and Jane Paynter in the early 1990s. Outside of work, Jeff is a

Kayak fishing is very popular, as a kayak allows you to cover a reasonable distance and access a range of locations. And, catching fish from your kayak can be an exhilarating experience. Whitewater kayaking is action packed. There’s something for everyone; from grade II rivers for beginners to grade 4 and beyond for advanced paddlers looking for a challenge.
The newest kayak discipline is packrafting. Inflatable pack rafts can weight as little as 2-3kg and will pack down small enough to carry in your pack. This opens up so many rivers and waterways that would otherwise be impractical to access. At Kayak HQ we have a large range of kayaks and accessories. Come see us for informative advice; we can recommend gear to suit your needs so you get on the water this summer.

If you wish to explore further afield, then sea kayaking is the way to do this. Sea kayaks are longer, with enclosed storage space to carry camping gear and necessities. This allows you to be self-sufficient and explore a reasonable distance. It’s hard to beat a sea kayak if you wish to explore the Abel Tasman coastline or the Marlborough Sounds.
If racing is your scene, check out surf ski and multisport kayaking. Speed is the common factor here. Whether you plan on doing the Coast to Coast or want to paddle for fitness, these are the go-to kayaks.

SpOrtS Coastal Classic Nelson and Tasman runners Chris Gates, Colin Rolfe and Owen Rowse continued their record run of finishing every Abel Tasman Coastal Classic since the event’s inception in 1994 when they completed the 24th edition on Saturday. Sally Gibbs won the women’s race in 2hr 48min 37sec while the fastest male was Vajin Armstrong in 2hr 26min 26sec. The annual run along the Abel Tasman National Park coastal track between Awaroa and Marahau was shortened slightly to 32km this year. Rugby The Tasman Makos will travel to New Plymouth this Saturday night to take on Taranaki in the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership semi-final. The Makos are coming off a big loss to Counties Manukau but coach Leon MacDonald did rest a number of his star players for the game. The semi-final will kick off at 7.35pm. In the other semi-final, Canterbury will host North Harbour.
Cricket The Nelson Griffins representative cricket team finished third at the Central Districts Chapple Cup tournament over the weekend. On Friday, Nelson beat Horowhenua, on Saturday lost to Hawke's Bay, before rounding out the weekend with a win over Taranaki on Sunday to finish third. Football A Tasman United fan favourite has re-committed to the team for the summer. Having been in the wider Wellington Phoenix squad in the lead up to the A-League season, Tinashe Marowa has decided to return to Nelson Pine LVL Tasman United for the upcoming ISPS Handa National Premier League season. Tinashe has joined the squad this week and his signing brings the squad to 21 with two places left available, and there are expected to be no further announcements before Tasman's season opener this Sunday, October 22, against Hamilton Wanderers in the Waikato.
