Next Sunday you will have an excellent reason to take your bike out of the garage and head to Wakefield for the opening of
Tasman’s Great Taste Trail from Wakefield to Hoult Valley. This new section of trail is 3.8km long and follows the Wai-iti River from Pigeon Valley Road to Hoult Valley Road. “This has been the missing link in the Great Taste Trail for a
number of years while new sections of trail have been developed from Wai-iti Domain to Kohatu,” says Josh Aldridge, trail manager from Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust Josh Aldridge. Until now, riders have had to ride along State Highway 6 south
of Wakefield to Wai-iti Domain, where the off-road trail continues to Spooners Tunnel. Josh says it is a popular feature of the trail and at 1.35km long is the longest tunnel in the southern hemisphere that you can ride your bike through. People can now ride Tasman’s
Great Taste Trail from Nelson to Kohatu almost entirely off-road. “A lot of locals are riding the trail from Richmond to Brightwater or Wakefield for coffee or lunch before returning home”, he says.

Welcome to Springtime! Bruno Saia Monday, 23 September is the first day of Spring and the flower season starts with the traditional Spring Flower Show, on Saturday 21 September at Brightwater Hall. The event will be open to the public from 9am to 3:15pm. “Brightwater Horticultural Society has been doing the Flower Show every year for 115 years,” says Marie Hunter, treasurer, committee and Life Member of the Society. And after so many years, their focus is to show young people the joy that flowers can bring. “It’s getting to the stage that there is not a lot of the young ones coming on and that’s what we are trying to encourage,” says Marie. “The problem today is that when they build a house, they don’t seem to go in for the flowers. They are missing the perfume for one thing, the bright colours, the enjoyment of flower,” she says. Marie’s husband is John Hunter, one of the world’s most renowned daffodil growers.

From September 29, riders of all ages and abilities will be able to enjoy the ride from Wakefield to Spooners Tunnel or Kohatu, Josh says. “Currently tour operators are driving visitors to the Tasman region out to Wai-iti, Belgrove, or Kohatu so that their customers can ride through Spooners Tunnel.” Josh says the vision for the Great Taste Trail is a complete loop showcasing the region’s best tastes including scenery, food and wine, arts and history. The next stage of development will take riders from Kohatu to Tapawera along the historic railway alignment before following the Motueka River to Riwaka.

The Wakefield to Hoult Valley Road section will remain closed until September 29. There will be a ribbon-cutting at the entrance to the trail by Pigeon Valley Road bridge at 1.30pm, followed by a group ride to Hoult Valley Road (4 km) for refreshments before returning to Wakefield. “In the meantime, we ask that you respect the signs and do not attempt to ride this section of the trail while the contractors are still working,” says Josh. A 700-litre freezer for ‘Kai With Love’ had to count on a lot of help from the community to arrive in Richmond from the North Island. “We’ve been looking for an affordable freezer this size for about six months. Most of them get snapped up quickly by the guys who hunt because you can fit a whole deer inside one,” said Abigail Packer, from ‘Kai With Love’.
“When we found this one the Richmond Community Church bought it for us. That’s how they sponsor us, with space and generously buying freezers for our needs,” she says. But still they needed to find a way to bring it down here, and that’s when Mark Holland, the General Manager of TNL Freighting, authorised and organised the transport free of charge. “We have a good relationship with TNL, but this was a big ask. Fonterra’s Brightwater Memory plant water saving target Walk Sara Hollyman Fonterra’s Brightwater plant is part of a bold new target to save more than 3.4 billion litres of water every year. The co-operative announced last week that six of its manufacturing sites in water-constrained regions will reduce their water use by 30 per cent by 2030 as part of its move to accelerate sustainability to the heart of its strategy. Upper South Island operations manager Chris Win welcomes the challenge and says the whole team is on board with the initiative. “To be honest it’s pretty cool, we have to go to community meetings and be accountable for our site, but more than that, this is our community, we live here and our staff get asked tough questions when they’re out, so it’s great to be able to say ‘well, here’s what we’re doing.’” Fonterra says Brightwater has been chosen as one of six plants to participate because water is in high demand in the region. Chris says the team learnt a lot during the drought early in the year.
Emily Macdonald, Upper South Island environmental manager, and Chris Win, Upper South Island operations manager, at the Brightwater plant. Photo: Bruno Saia. “It was a tough time for the area but when you get the right reason to do something it allows you to focus. The water constraints were felt by a lot of businesses and residents, so we are, I guess, further ahead in the thought process of how we are going to rise to this challenge.” The site has already made a start with an upgraded metering system and several other new initiatives in the pipeline. This includes using recycled water to wash tankers and making repairs on machinery
that they didn’t realise wasn’t functioning as well as it could be. Chris says there are three things to think of when looking at systems and processes to save water in the factory. “There’s what can we do with money, what we do with our processes, and then also what we can do individually, so some of it is actually attitude.” Fonterra chief operating officer global operations, Robert Spurway, says taking a targeted approach to the six sites will ultimately result in better effi-

ciency and outcomes. “Water is a precious resource and we can’t take it for granted. For some parts of New Zealand, water isn’t always in the right place at the right time, and our water use in these regions can put stress on local water sources and the communities that rely on them. “We’ve focused on the six sites where major water savings can have the greatest impact. This means we can target efforts and investment into those regions most in need. He says the target will require some clever ideas and creative thinking but the site teams are already rising to the challenge. “Reducing our water use at our manufacturing sites is the right thing to do for the environment and for the communities we operate in. That’s why we’ve set this new target, which will save billions of litres of water,” says Robert. Brightwater is one of the six sites, alongside Maungaturoto, Lichfield, Darfield, Clandeboye and Edendale. Fonterra’s Brightwater plant is located at 30 Factory Road. More information about all their plants is available at the website www.fonterra.com.
Susan Johnson This Saturday, 21st, at St Barnabas Church Stoke will be the annual walk for the organisation Alzheimer’s Nelson. It’s not just to raise funds but to also raise awareness. The community-based organisation received 135 new referrals last year and with about 60% of referrals being diagnosed and documented. The support group in Nelson was started 35 years ago by Helen Webber, whose mother had the condition. Helen couldn’t find any support groups so put an advertisement in the newspaper and received three replies. The group met for lunch, daycare, support and advice. It has now grown into three field workers and an office manager who offers education, advocacy and support for those with dementia and their support people. They also provide training for volunteers, produce newsletters, and much more. Come on Saturday, wear something purple and show your support. A brass band will lead off the walkers and there will be a raffle and refreshments to finish. Register at alzheimers.org.nz/ memorywalk.

Major mayoral issues Bruno Saia and Susan Johnson The TDC (Tasman District Council) mayoral elections are coming and the Waimea Weekly editorial team decided to ask some of our readers: What is a significant issue the new TDC mayor should focus on? We had four main subjects pointed by our readers and all for candidates made a 100-word comment about each of them. That’s the second comment published at the Waimea Weekly. Las week (11.09) the candidates commented about: The infrastructure, with the population continuing to increase the streets in the CBD are already congested. Postal voting and special votes are going from 20 September to 12 October. Get a move on with the dam, every delay means the cost will just keep increasing, get on with it! Terry Smith (Richmond).
Tim King timbking4@gmail.com Delivering the dam is now primarily the job of Waimea Water Ltd, the partnership between Council and water users. Council’s role is to monitor their progress closely, ask questions where necessary and support them to deliver on their commitments to us and you
around time and cost. I am committed to working constructively with Waimea Water, the partners in the project, and the Government who are significant funders, to make this important project for our region a success.
Maxwell Clark medimax@xtra.co.nz The dam project is underway at present. The geology at the site has been identified as one of the major risks according to the Waimea Water Ltd, Chairperson of the directors, Karen Jordan, and MP Nick Smith (19th July 2019). Currently two separate drilling companies have been drilling on separate occasions for six weeks each. They have been unable to locate bedrock (ie solid rock) to anchor the dam’s structure to. All they have found is fractured, rotten greywacke country and granite sand. The dam (if built) will be 16 stories high, twice the height of the Rutherford Hotel in Nelson. It is imperative to find bedrock before this project can progress.
Brent Maru brentmaru@gmail.com As Mayor of Tasman, the most significant issue will be the forming of a new Council a one that will be a mix of experienced and new members, with
councillors of differing views and backgrounds. To meet the many challenges ahead, whether they are financial, the dam, or environmental, will require robust, diverse debate, from a governance team that is respectful, has high trust, is willing to work collaboratively and is committed to transparency. Leading Council means ensuring decisions are transparent. Our community have a high level of trust and engagement with us, but more important is that the ratepayers see Council as being relevant.
Dean McNamara dean@tdcme.nz The dam is well underway. Unfortunately, the current council’s policy of build-the-dam-at-any-cost will have impacts that affect the Tasman region for many years. Not only have we borrowed up to our debt-cap, we have committed our future discretionary income from forestry for the next ten years. Therefore, any future funding requirements will have to come directly from the ratepayer. This includes all of the risk liability for the dam and all the future requirements to meet new Government legislation around water and land use. This is an unfortunate reality for the many in our region struggling to pay their bills.

Doubts about the Dam Bruno Saia Concerning all the doubts that remain regarding the Waimea Community Dam, Waimea Water Limited (WWL) is hosting an event on Wednesday, 25 September, from 7 to 8:30pm, at Richmond Town Hall. The community is invited to register for it and also send their questions or topics until Sunday, 22 September, through the email address: info@ waimeawater.nz. Questions about the design, build or another area of interest may be answered by the experts. Waimea Water is a council-controlled organisation established to manage the construction, operation and maintenance of the dam. They aim to have three people to help answer questions during the event.

Tasman District Council adopts Climate Action Plan
Your electricity discount is on its way
Staff Reporter Tasman District Council has adopted a Climate Action Plan to drive reductions in Council emissions, provide leadership and advocacy and improve the district’s resilience in the face of a changing climate. The Tasman Climate Action Plan is a further step for the Council in responding to the challenges of climate change and focuses on getting the organisation’s own house in order as a first step. A fund of $100,000 has been set aside to progress some of the short-term actions that have not already been budgeted for. Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne said the Council recognised it had an important role to play in helping the Tasman community prepare and adapt. “We need to provide leadership in this area. There is no point in us preaching to our residents about what they should do to ensure a more sustainable future before we take a hard look at our own organisation and the steps we need to take to reduce our own emissions and ensure sound environmental practice in everything we do.” The action plan was developed with councillors but included a series of workshops with enviro leaders from Tasman schools, including students from Waimea College, Motueka High School, Golden Bay High School and Collingwood Area School. The workshops also considered ideas put forward by primary school students at this year’s Tasman Mission sustainability challenge.

Dana Wensley is 100% qualified to be your Richmond Ward councillor. She is one of the hardest working councillors. Always out and about in Richmond, she connects to people and the community in a way that enables her to bring your voice to Council. As the only female representative for the Richmond Ward she has a busy workload. In addition to sitting on the standing committees of Engineering, Environmental and Planning, and Full Council, Dana is appointed Deputy Chair of Community Development, Chair of the Accessibility for All Forum, sits on the Commercial Committee, and has special appointments to the Positive Ageing Forum, Waimea Inlet Coordination Group, and the Digital Enablement Strategy. Dana was born and raised in Motueka and attended schooling in both Motueka and Waimea College. She lives in Richmond, and volunteers on community groups for the arts and the environment. After living and working overseas Dana returned to Richmond to raise her family. She is 100% committed to the region, and has Richmond’s future at the heart of every decision she makes. With a strong background in local politics, law and policy, Dana has been a fierce advocate for the ratepayer for the last three
years. Dana worked as a commercial lawyer at Kensington Swan in Auckland before embarking on a career in health law. She asks the hard questions for you, always striving to get a good balance between competing interests. She works well in a team. Nowhere was this more apparent than in her commitment to ensure ratepayers receive a secure water supply in periods of fire and drought, but at a price that is transparent and affordable to those on fixed incomes. Dana has driven strategic change for Richmond. She has followed through on her 2016 election promise by spearheading the new age-friendly policy. She champions safe walking and cycling, and advocated successfully for the Richmond Bus Loop. She has achieved a first for Tasman by getting the youth voice on Council, and is proud of the fact that she successfully oversaw the final stages of the Velodrome build. Election pledge: “I will continue to work hard to increase transparency at Council, encourage small affordable housing options, solve long-term transport issues, protect fertile productive land on the Waimea Plains, promote safe walking and cycling, and create resilient communities that respond to effects of climate change.” Advt.

Appeal Week to help hospital Chaplaincy Bruno Saia Reporter
bruno@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Nelson Hospital Chaplaincy needs help to keep offering comfort and support to people in local hospitals. Their Appeal Week will be between 23 and 27 September when a stall with different sorts of products will be set up in the Nelson Hospital foyer. “The Appeal Week is part of our fundraising efforts to connect and maintain connections with the community and to keep us ‘on the radar.’ It also allows people to support us. Traditionally everyone is in-
vited to drop off anything that they feel we can fundraise with,” says Henk Lups, Chaplain at Nelson Hospital. According to Henk, everybody is invited to drop off products such as books, preserves, jams, bread, muffins, cakes and slices. “Everything that we can sell. Not the garage sale type of stuff, but stuff that people say ‘gosh, this is nice’. Not necessarily low calorie, but all very good. People are welcome to drop it off daily,” he says. Except for the baking, which is usually done on the day, other products can already be taken to Nelson Hospital reception and the best time for it is be-
tween 9am and midday. “Everybody knows someone who has been in a hospital or who may go to a hospital, and they may have been in hospital themselves. We are non-religious. We are trying to connect with people. People who find it quite hard to cope with their situation or just want to have a chat. It is for people of all faith or no faith. It doesn’t matter to us at all. It is really about the person and not what their beliefs are. That’s irrelevant,” says Henk. During the Appeal Week at Nelson Hospital, the stall will be open to the public between 10am and 3pm.

Richmond School parade is a hit
Letter to the Editor
Bruno Saia
Tasman Voting system - Have your Say Our Tasman District voting papers will arrive soon and, as before, two of the five wards will vote for Community Board representatives as well as for councillors and a Mayor. There’s also an extra important decision for all Tasman electors, whichever ward they live in. Together we will choose which voting system will be used from 2022. The voting system is the foundation stone that underpins our democratic elections. We the electors must choose it. Thanks to the legislation governing all councils, we will choose between the First Past the Post (FPP) and the numbered preferential Single Transferable Vote (STV) systems. A leaflet enclosed with the voting papers will compare them, but it’s a good idea to start thinking about the choices now if you haven’t been to one of the candidates’ meetings. Lunchtime information sessions at Richmond Library are planned for Monday, 23 September (12-1pm), Wednesday, 25 September (12-1pm), and Friday, 27 September (1-2pm). Or email queries to lizthomaspost@gmail.com Because nearly 2,500 Tasman voters signed a petition, we have this special opportunity to make an important decision for our district. It’s the first time in 18 years. Please make sure you vote.

Batman, Harry Potter, vampires, fairies, skeletons and all sorts of characters walked through the streets of Richmond Town Centre last Friday. It was the Richmond School Book Parade, with the kids all dressed up as part of their book week. “There is a focus on literacy for the whole week. And it’s also Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, so there is also a focus on Maori myths and legends as well. Those two things are going alongside together,” says the associate principal, Glenna Armstrong. During the week, the children participated in different kinds of activities, like storytelling, costume competitions and others, all related to books. “And this is a chance to get all the school together. They are pretty much all dressed up. Even the principal and the whole team will be out here. It’s a cool opportunity where we can all walk down through Richmond,” she says.

Grab a free bike, help fix it up and take it home. It’s yours to keep. It sounds like a great idea, right? It will be done on 28 September at Saxton Field, from 9am to midday. Already 40 people have registered for it, but it is still possible to save a place for the next turn. “I already have about 30 registrations for adult bikes and about 10 for children. So we are going to cut it off for the 28th because we only have three hours and we wouldn’t get all the bikes fixed if we took more,” says Kym Smith, Travel Demand Management Advisor for the Nelson City Council. They already have a shed full of bikes that have been donated over time and now the reparable ones will be selected to be re-used. “There are all sorts of different sizes and also in different states of repair,” says Kym. “This is the first time that we are doing this, so we will see how it

The adventures of the teenager Ash, in the fictional world of Mildaresh, are told in the book: ‘Taelstone: Stones of the Azuri: Book One’. It was Robyn Prokop’s debut novel, launched last Friday at the Junction Cheese Shop in Appleby. Robyn is a fresh new voice in fantasy and young adult fiction and she is proud of the result of her work, all done locally in an independent way. “It’s just brilliant how authors can now get their books into global markets, but still draw on the talents of local editors, designers and printers,” says Robyn, who lives on a lifestyle block in Nelson.

Outdoor activities for Duke of Edinburgh
Staff Reporter Meeting new people, setting your own goals and taking part in exciting challenges are a few of the goals of the The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award. Local youth can now participate in the Award through Whenua Iti Outdoors (WIO) as the centre recently established an onsite Open Award Unit. Located in Lower Moutere, WIO can now support participants through all 3 levels
of the Award - Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level involves learning new skills, taking part in physical activities, serving the community and undertaking an Adventurous Journey of your choice. The Award was launched 60 years ago and it is open to all 14 to 24-year-olds regardless of their background, culture, physical ability, skills and interests. “Duke of Ed is an awesome Award to get involved with” says Kathryn Bunckenburg,
who leads the Award at WIO. “Through WIO, we can offer you lots of support and a chance to try some cool activities. The Adventurous Journey is my favourite part and there is definitely something for everyone in there.” WIO will be running an Award meeting on the first Thursday of every month in term time. The participants will take part in activities, meet new people and get answers to any questions that they have about the Award.
WIO can provide the Adventurous Journey to anyone taking part in the Award (not just part of the Award Unit). Those ‘adventures’ can be sea kayaking, caving, tramping, and more. They are also the Hub Leaders for the Top of the South, which means they support other organisations to deliver the Award including setting up new groups. Contact info@wio.org.nz for more information or www. wio.org.nz, 03 526 7842.

went to Waimea Intermediate and Waimea College. I am a father, grand-father.
U I am the Managing Director of MediMax Ambulance Services and work in the Health sector, caring for people as both an Intensive Care Paramedic and a Registered Nurse.
U It is time for a new Mayor to take Tasman forward whilst at the same time respecting and protecting our Districts many treasures and businesses.
U I want to Head a Council that listen to you the people and encourages more ratepayer participation
U For me to do this, I need you to let me know what you need U I will retain all Council owned Pensioner Housing which currently operates with a small profit and build two new community housing units per year WE MUST DO BETTER
U We have one of the highest rates and the highest reticulated water changes in the country. U The Council borrowing (debt) as at 28th February 2019 was $195.5 million (gross debt). U This year the Council is going to increase your rates by 2.74% plus growth of between 1.2% and 1.3% TOTAL = 4% Rate increase (approx).
U When you consider that the cost of living in NZ is 1.9% this year our rates are excessive, it’s time to live within our means.
U Rates are set each year by the Individual Council Departments by bringing their budgets together for approval and then the rates are set for the coming year. MY WAY FORWARD IS:
U Using one department this year as an example: U Engineers Department: This department has a yearly capital works programme for Engineering Services to provide services to the public such as footpaths, stormwater, roading etc. This year 30% of the approval and funded works programme which your rates paid for last year… was never undertaken.
U You are paying higher than needed Annual Rates for projects that are not being started or completed. This practise must STOP.
U Water Conservation: make a water storage tank part of the Building Code on ‘new’ buildings. U For existing homes, I will encourage installation of a water storage tank. If a homeowner wanted to have one, I would get the council to facilitate ‘bulk purchase’ for the benefit of the homeowner.

A little about us: We are an a’capella group, (unaccompanied) who until only a few weeks ago, were a mens group - however - we have now unanimously agreed to invite women to join us. The reason for this was our dwindling numbers & difficulty in recruiting & retaining men. We already have recruited 2 women who are loving being with us. As a result we will be looking for a new name to reflect that we are now a “mixed chorus”. We are a friendly, small group 12 to 14 people at the moment & don’t take ourselves too seriously. With the competitive season winding down the club have been very successful with all their interclub, tournaments and club leagues they have organised. As the Betta Inspect It club league is about to finish, the club is organising the NBS business house competition. This is a very social but competitive teams event played before and after Xmas for 12 weeks. This is a great event which often brings in beginners who have never played together with players who have not played for some time and joining with existing club members. Top Junior Henry Aitken (above right) has had a great season. Aged 18, Henry has reached a grading of A2, top junior boy in Canterbury district, ranked 11 nationally, won U23 Canterbury tournament and has also won the South Island U19 age group champs. He will also enter junior nationals and has been selected to play for the Canterbury team in the district national team event.
Another junior, Liam Gale (above left) is having a good season. In most national tournaments he has finished above his seeding. He will attend the South Island age team tournament in Ashburton early October and at 14 years old has a B2 grading which is great for such a young age. He will also attend the NZ junior nationals in Auckland. Other juniors, Jazmine and Jaxon Palmer-Benseman, will also attend the nationals which will be great for their future squash. Other club members Nick Burns, Richard Stevenson and Susan O’Connell have been selected to represent Canterbury in the NZ Masters national team event. They will all play in the individual tournament on 18-20 October first, and then compete in the teams competition. 2019 Waimea club champs is 1-2 November and will be one of the most competitive tournaments held in Nelson with very even draws for men, women and juniors. Soon after this event the Club Waimea Squash AGM will be held on Sat 9th Nov at 4pm. With the club functioning so well, it is expected to have record numbers attend this year.

Where your flower garden is concerned, keep deadhead-
MOWtivated When Michael and Anita Burt moved from Tasmania they had such a hard time finding jobs they decided to create one for themselves and MOWtivated Lawn and Garden was born. When they are not meeting the gardening needs of customers from Richmond to Motueka they are doing further studies in horticulture and working on a friends lifestyle block. Michael had been a chef for 30 years and Anita had been in administration but they have always loved gardening. Anita says “we thrive on hard work and no job is too big or too small. They specialize in life-
style blocks, clearing, mowing and green waste removal but can meet all gardening needs from pruning, weeding, and mulching. References available. Phone Michael or Anita on 0275993304.

They specialize in growing 1-to2 year old New Zealand natives, exotic trees and shrubs. The plants suit lifestyle blocks, landowners and town gardens. Their youngest son Ollie started working with his parents five years ago and last year bought the business. But Dad James is still very much a part of the enterprise staying on to work part time. Most of their trees and shrubs are grown on site with plants hardened to suit a wide range of conditions. They deliver to Golden Bay, Marlborough and other areas throughout New Zealand on request. It is often said that we are not Lifestyle Block Farmers but “Life Sentence Block Holders.” Whatever way you look at it, you will only get out of it what you put in. We have several options here at Fertilizer NZ with Lifestyle Mixes especially for small block holders that will give excellent grass growth and good healthy animals. We can deliver specific mixes for whatever farming type you are involved in, like our very popular Equine Mix for horse enthusiasts and our Lifestyle Mix for small lifestyle blocks, not to mention a comprehen-

Still ME is a photographic exhibition in support of the Pinc and Steel Cancer Trust. It’s a collaboration between the photographer Jose Gay Cano and local physiotherapist Helen Nott. The Pinc and Steel Cancer Trust gives locals financial support to access specialised cancer rehabilitation services after surgery or treatment. Helen is one such provider, with a particular interest in pre and post-operative rehabilitation and the management of anxiety. She works on complex pain management and extensively with patients recovering from cancer treatments. She is also a cancer survivor herself. It was when Jose came in for physio and the pair were chatting that the idea about the exhibition started. Helen had seen one of Jose’s exhibition and found the images beautiful. The ideal appealed to Jose when he learned of Helen’s oncology and re-

hab work. Jose uses art to ‘connect with hearts and feelings’, ‘he says. He and his wife Kungy, who did the models make up, gifted their time, “Without
Lizl Matthewson them STILL ME would not have been possible” says Helen. All of the models are patients of Helen, one of whom is Lizl Matthewson from Wakefield. “I have, throughout my cancer journey and recovery, made a very conscious effort to be positive and put on a brave face. I shared my actual struggles dealing with my changed body and physical and
emotional pain with very few people. Pinc and Steel has contributed immensely, to not only my physical but also to my emotional healing. I also did the NEXT STEPS exercise programme through Pinc and Steel during which time I was able to connect with other women. Being part of this project has also been part of my personal healing and the beautiful images have empowered all the woman involved, to express themselves as STILL being ME” said Lizl. The exhibition opens on the 26th with a gala, tickets $69 (the cost of a funded treatment session) includes drinks and nibbles, and runs until the 28th September. Tickets available from Activate Physiotherapy 548 2622. The opening will also include a silent auction and raffle. Donations will be appreciated during the exhibition days and further information about the trust and services will be available.

Ben Kubiak will perform the famous Toreador Song from Carmen by Bizet and If I Were A Rich Man from Fiddler on the Roof. Last Night of the Proms is conducted by the Nelson Symphony Orchestra’s Director of Music, Nigel Weeks, at the Nelson Centre for Musical
Arts, Nile St, on Saturday, 21 September at 7.30pm, with a repeat performance on Sunday, 22 September at 2pm. Other pieces in this programme include: Overture Roman Carnival, Fantasia on British Sea Songs, Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 and Jerusalem.
Nelson Matters
The latest suicide figures from the coroner are awful. New Zealand’s toll for the year to June 2019 hit a new high of 685 with the last month the worst ever at 79. The annual numbers for Nelson and Marlborough were 20 up from 12 the year before. Word’s cannot describe the anguish and grief that goes with each life lost. The suicide issue requires sensitivity and compassion. There is no place for the blame game or partisan politics. We need to heed the expert evidence that excessive publicity can risk more deaths but we also need to confront the hard questions. My local constituency work this
month included dealing with a tragic death at Franklin Village early on Sunday, 1st September. The man had fallen on tough times over winter, knew he was not OK and sought help. Our Emergency Department turned him away in the days prior. He met, supported by friends, with the Mental Health Community Assessment Team the night prior. His friends were horrified by the way his suicidal concerns were dismissed and care refused. His death, like many others, was preventable. I am following up his case with our District Health Board and the Suicide Prevention Office. My worry is that I am getting an increasing
number of complaints about deteriorating mental health services. Staff morale is low, turnover has been awful and too many good professionals have resigned. The Health Board, Chair and CEO have fairly heard my concerns. They are frustrated that none of the promised additional resources from Government have yet materialised for front line services. Preventing suicide is a really tough issue. The current and previous Governments have both taken initiatives to reverse the tide. This month there was cross party agreement to work together on the issue. We need a sciencebased approach that taps into the

I’m currently in Beirut on my way home after a week with a Dental Medical team in the Becaa Valley in Lebanon where I have had many opportunities to meet and treat Syrian refugees and their families. Spare a thought for this family, just one of hundreds of thousands of families who now live in refugee settlements and are trying hard to build new lives. Five years ago, Adeen and his family gave up everything to seek safety as refugees in Lebanon. Now, they live in a refugee settlement and are trying hard to build new lives. Adeen worked hard in Syria to give his children a better future. Now, their lives are on hold as they struggle to survive in a refugee settlement in Lebanon. A shepherd in Syria before the war, Adeen worked hard to provide for his family. Where he’s from in Syria, it’s traditional to take children out of school at 10 years old to work. Teenage marriage is the norm for girls. But Adeen wanted his children to have more choices. Even though he wasn’t allowed to continue, he loved school as a child. He was adamant that his daughters continue schooling through university – one aiming to become a maths teacher, another studying IT. He even supported his brother so that his nieces could afford to stay in school. When the war came, Adeen’s first priority was to protect his daughters from sexual assault. Seventeen people from his neighborhood were abducted over a short period of time. No one knew by whom. Houses were burning and bombs were falling, Adeen says, and no one was safe. The conflict between warring factions in Syria was heating up, and Adeen knew he had to
escape to protect his family. His family were some of the first refugees to arrive in Lebanon. However, this meant leaving their livelihoods and home behind. Adeen’s wife, Khawlah said what her life is now compared to before. “I had a comfortable life in Syria. We never had to ask for help from others, so we had our dignity intact. But now, each day is worse than the day before.” Now in Lebanon, the family lives in a ramshackle settlement in the Bekaa Valley. Their focus has turned to survival, eking out a daily existence and staying healthy. They can no longer afford school and the children are now six years behind in their schooling. Instead of going to classes, they work in Lebanese farms for $4 a day. Their farm earnings help cover their living expenses, but is not enough to pay for all the medicines for Adeen’s chronic illness or to pay for his son’s urgently-needed openheart surgery. Despite this, he’s adamant that his daughters should not be forced into early marriage and is hopeful they will be able to finish their degrees one day. Adeen is thankful for the support his family has received. But, he knows much more must be done. “The needs are serious,” he says. As months have become years, the family’s hope is slipping away. Recently, they made a plan to give all the money they’d saved to their second eldest son to venture on his own across Turkey and into Greece. From there, he’d work his way north to Scandinavia, where he could establish himself, finish his education, get a job and, when he’d earned enough, send for his family. This ambitious plan is all the family has right now.

very best evidence on what will work. We also need to be cautious of change that will make the problem worse. I worry that the debate on euthanasia feeds a culture that some lives are not worth living. I am also concerned that liberalizing cannabis will just add to our mental health and suicide woes. Part of the solution is ensuring people are connected and valued. That’s why I am such a strong supporter of sports, arts, church and other community groups that enable people to be engaged with their community. We must also salute all the social service organisations in Nelson, whether it is

Local zero waste country fair A great day out for all the family is what people will find at the Hope School Country Fair, on 21 September. “The Hope School Country Fair and Silent Auction is our big school fundraiser for the year, and a great opportunity for our community to pull together,” says Sarah Whittle, main coordinator of the event. “The school families have put
lots of work and time in preparing for the fair - which happens whatever the weather,” she says. Silent auction, laser tag, farm bike tow rides, woodchopping demo, digger rides and farm animals are some of the activities people will be able to enjoy there. “We have upgraded our motorbike tow from a sack on the back to mussel buoys, we have some awesome goodies in the
Silent Auction,” says Sarah. Locally produced food and drinks and homemade baking and preserves will also be available. “The hot food tent will be firing up the BBQs again and the Hope School kids will be performing some of the things they have learnt through the year. Plus our plant stall will be there just in time for spring planting,” she says. The school is also aiming for
zero waste with the support of Tasman District Council. “We are going to have the debut outing of Waste No More’s washing up trailer. We invite our visitors to bring their own bags, cups and plates (don’t forget for the kids too!), but there will be reusable cups & plates available to hire for a small bond, which then are returned to the trailer for washing. Kaleb makes history again Jonty Dine When Kaleb Johnston was first dragged along to the local bowls club, he resisted. The 18-year-old initially dismissed the sport as just an ‘old man’s game’. However, now in a competitive career spanning a little over three years, Kaleb has his name firmly etched in the national record books. The Stoke Club member has an incredibly impressive résumé, setting milestones not seen in the sport for decades. Kaleb cemented his status as the best junior bowler in the country last month as he defended his U18 singles title in a thrilling final. The Waimea College student was locked in a gripping battle with 17-year-old Canterbury bowler Nikita Blair. “I was down the whole game, I had to fight back.
She had the upper hand on me the whole game and it all came down to that last end.” The defending champion held his nerve to claim the victory 9-8 and become the first player to go back-toback in 26 years. Kaleb is no stranger to making history on the bowls mat - being part of the first, and only, father and son duo to win the same title, after dad Mike won the inaugural tournament in 1978. At 15, Kaleb became the youngest player in Nelson history to win the Nelson Indoor Bowls centre gold star for five centre titles. This record was previously held by New Zealand bowler Ali Forsyth for nineteen years. Kaleb says, while the sport is less strenuous on the body than others he’s played in the past, bowls is a far more stressful experience.
“During the final I was just sweating, stressing out and staring at the mat.” An avid swimmer and footballer before taking up bowls, Kaleb was training every day when he started to go along with his dad to club open days. “I hated it at first, but then went to a junior’s tournament and there were rugby players and other sportsmen, which I was not expecting at all. I made heaps of friends and that’s when I started to really enjoy it and take it more seriously.” Though they are often teammates, Kaleb and his father enjoy a friendly rivalry when facing off. However, Kaleb is still yet to beat his old man in singles competition. “We have had some close games but haven’t played each other in about a year, I think he’s getting a bit scared now.”

Cold, wind and rain at Bayview Race Yvonne West Twenty-six runners braved the cold blustery wind and driving rain to compete in the annual Bayview Harrier Race on Saturday. This race starts at the Milton Street Sprig and Fern, goes up Bayview Road and back to Milton Street via the Centre of New Zealand. There are normally fantastic views out over the Haven and Nelson City from the top ridge, but not so on Saturday. Instead, low cloud engulfed runners and the tracks were slippery. Despite the inclement weather conditions, one of the top local runners, Alan Bryson, still managed to complete the course in 42.55 mins, 2 minutes ahead of Chris Sharland, who is also a very strong off-road runner. Klaartjie van Shie continued her winning form from the Dun Run last Saturday to win the woman’s race in 47.25mins, with Carys Colman in second position. This race was excellent training for the Queen Charlotte relays next Saturday and the Abel Tasman Coastal Classic the week after. Runners have prepared themselves for any weather conditions they may face on the road from Picton to Havelock and in the Abel Tasman National Park.

array in the first half as they found themselves behind in all facets including the scoreboard, but a late penalty try ensured the Mako remain unbeaten in 2019. Immediately following a clinical 80-minute effort against Counties Manukau the previous week, the Mako turned on an error-laden first half. Harbour were good value for their 17-7
lead at the break, having got their tactics spot on, an effort bearing the hallmark of their coach, former Mako mentor Kieran Keane. He would not have been so happy with their second 40 minutes though as the Mako, buoyed by some key substitutions, controlled possession, applied pressure and reversed the flow of penalties.

The Sport Fishing for Youth Trust has announced that the children’s fishing ponds at Appleby will be restocked prior to the coming school holidays. “Nelson Marlborough Fish and Game have decided to put up to 200 young salmon into the ponds over the next week and these will provide a great opportunity for youngsters over the school holidays,” said Ian Kearney, from the Sport Fishing for Youth Trust. The Trust have opened the ponds for children to fish with adult supervision up until 15 October. After that the ponds will be closed for maintenance and for programmed fish-out-days. “Some families have enjoyed great family activity over the winter when conditions have permitted fishing. Fish and Game put some very large fish in the ponds a few weeks ago. One of these weighed 9.5 lbs and provided a great thrill to the young fisherman who caught it.” He said that users of the ponds must be careful to comply with the conditions of use and it must be children who are doing the fishing. He said that if they were uncertain what the conditions of use were then they should check on the Trust’s website. They also need a licence from Nelson Marlborough Fish and Game. Licences can be obtained through their website (fishandgame.org.nz/nelson) and are free for children 12 and under and $20 for children between 12 and 17 years of age. The Sport Fishing for Youth Trust provides the ponds and the facilities to encourage youth to participate in outdoor activities. The Trust provides a series of “fishout-days” in November and December and again in April/May. At these “fish-out-days” volunteers provide individual assistance and guidance to young fishers and the Trust provides the equipment. Details about the fish-out-days, their dates and the process for booking a slot for a child, can be found on
