Mapua bill keeps on rising
“
Simon Bloomberg The Mapua Shed 4 debacle continues to plague the Tasman District Council with a $39,480 bill the latest in a series of financial and public relations failures linked to the development. Council revealed on Tuesday that it has to pay that amount after losing a court case against Bruce and Adele Calteaux, the former owners of Hamish’s ice-cream parlour on the Mapua Wharf. Nelson District Court judge Tony Zohrab had earlier found council was in breach of an agreement when it “declined to honour” a contract terminating the lease of the business premises in 2015. The judge ruled that council had to pay the Calteauxs $20,000 plus GST but this week it was revealed that

figure has almost doubled to $39,480 after legal costs and interest were included in the final payment. The Calteauxs’ lawyer, John Fitchett of Rout Milner & Fitchett told the Waimea Weekly that council would pay all of the Calteauxs’ legal

Hundreds turn up for Rainbow opening Brittany Spencer Rainbow Ski Area opened it’s slopes on Saturday and with some beautiful sunshine, next to no wind and around 20cm of fresh powder, it was the perfect day. Over 300 skiers, snowboarders and tobogganers from across the country headed to the St Arnaud slopes. Skier Evie Cook says she is stoked after her first day in the snow. “It’s really exciting skiing here, I
can’t wait until there’s even more snow” The beginner and intermediate slopes are open and humming but the T bar remains closed, needing an extra 10cm dump before the masters can go crazy on the larger slope and park jumps. Rainbow Ski Area’s Matt Alcock says he is stoked the slopes are finally covered in snow and open for everyone to have fun on. “Five days ago this looked like the
middle of summer and we all came to work saying, ‘what is mother nature doing’ so when we finally got the snow it was like being a little kid at the ultimate Christmas, I kept walking around excitedly going, ‘we’ve got snow!’” The ski field is open everyday from 9am to 4pm with lessons, equipment hire, shuttles and a cafe. costs which came to $15,620, as well as interest on the $20,000 plus GST backdated to last October. The amount paid in legal costs was agreed to between council and Calteauxs and was not determined by the court. The dispute between the two parties centred on the payment of $20,000 to cover exit costs after Hamish’s, which operated out of the council-owned Shed 5 building, closed last year. Hamish’s owners were offered a lease in the new Shed 4 complex but declined because they considered the set-up costs were too high. The failed court case is
the latest in a list of issues surrounding the development. Last month the council chief executive Lindsay McKenzie apologised to councillors for not getting a budget overspend of $470,000 on the wharf approved. At the same time the council was the subject of protests from the Mapua community over a fence that it was building so that visitors were shielded from businesses that were not council tenants in the Shed 4 complex in an effort to give council tenants an advantage. It was also revealed last month that council awarded contracts to businesses for work without going through the

A decision by FreshChoice Richmond to remove soft drinks and confectionery from their checkouts to promote healthier food options is receiving widespread support from shoppers, parents and health experts from around Nelson and Tasman and the rest of the country. In what is believed to be a first for New Zealand supermarkets, FreshChoice Richmond owner Gary Watson implemented the sugar-free checkout policy last Tuesday. New fridges at the checkout have been stocked with water, fresh fruit and fruit salads while the checkout shelves have been filled with a variety of seasonal supplements, health bars and gift cards. Gary says he has been thinking about making the change for the last two years because he wanted to promote healthier food options for his shoppers. He says the checkout shelves and fridges are a “prime position for impulse purchasing so it’s a great opportunity to change people’s habits”. “The current health-climate in New Zealand is not so good and we’re part of that equation,” Gary says. “I felt uncomfortable with what

Parents decline to immunise Brittany Spencer Reporter
reporter@nelsonlive.co.nz
More than 200 infants in the Top of the South are not fully immunised, causing the region to miss a national health target and part of the “incentive funding” attached to it. The incentive funding is calculated each quarter and distributed to the region’s general practices through the Nelson Bays Primary Health Organisation. Up to $79,000 was available between July 2015 and June 2016 for Nelson Bays PHO if each of the five targets were met. The incentive funding is used by the Nelson Bays PHO to provide support and resources to general practices to further enable their immunisation activity. One of these targets is to immunise 95 per cent of children between eight and 24 months old. According to the most recent immunisation coverage report by the Ministry of Health, during a three-month period ending on
March 31, the Nelson and Marlborough only had 87.6 per cent of its infants fully immunised, the fifth lowest in the country. It showed that 222 children aged between eight and 24 months did not receive full immunisation. Full immunisation includes nine injections and three oral vaccines that fight 12 diseases including whooping cough, polio, measles, mumps and rubella. Nelson Bays PHO general manager of health services, Ward Steet, says it will be hard for Nelson to reach the 95 per cent target as there are a lot of “decliners” in the region, those who make an “often philosophical” decision not to immunise their children. “Our region has a high decliner rate of between 6.4 per cent and 6.9 per cent at any point in time which makes attaining a 95 per cent immunisation compliance rate quite difficult,” he says. Alliance Support manager Andrew Goodger says the region is due to miss out on about $9000 due to the failure to reach the immunisation targets.

We’re disappointed that parents would choose to not vaccinate because we believe there’s enough good evidence that vaccination is safe and prevents kids from having severe illnesses and, on occasion, from dying. - Dr Graham Loveridge.
“The payment is determined by a formula which depends on the population numbers and the percentage immunisation rate achieved each quarter. So if the target is missed by a small amount, the amount received is a small amount less. If you miss by a lot, the payment is reduced proportionately.” Nelson GP spokesman Graham Loveridge says all GPs are very supportive of immunisation as a way of preventing diseases. “We’re disappointed that parents would choose to not vaccinate
because we believe there’s enough good evidence that vaccination is safe and prevents kids from having severe illnesses and, on occasion, from dying.” Graham says people have forgotten how bad these diseases are because they’re not around so much and the vaccine programme is a principal reason for that. Nurses and practice managers at various practices spoken to by Waimea Weekly say some practises are able to achieve 100 per cent compliance, but there are “pockets” of areas in Nelson where they struggle with parents opting not to immunise their child. A nurse, who asked not to be named, says there is a lot of pressure for practices to reach the target and they have lists of families who have not immunised. They try to reach them but are often fobbed off. “Nelson has pockets of people making choices, and it’s our right to have choices in New Zealand. They’re saying, ‘we don’t want to immunise our children and it’s our right not to, we’ve read the
information but we’re a decliner, we don’t want to’.” A nurse at Greenwood Health Motueka says the reasons that parents give for not immunising vary. “Some parents give reasons, some are very dodgy and just say ‘no, no, don’t call me back’, some have fears for vaccination safety and say they just want to research things further.” Judy Gilmore, the practice manager at the Stoke Medical Centre, says parents who don’t want immunisations either think they don’t have to, that their child is too young or that they’ve heard bad things and don’t want to risk complications. Waimea Weekly spoke to five naturopaths within the region who advocate for parents to make “informed decisions about immunising”. Each said they didn’t want to comment due to the controversy of the subject and were scared of the backlash it would bring on their practices, with one saying, “I’m not going to put my neck on the line.”

Appleby’s Grape Escape complex sold to locals
The high profile Grape Escape retail complex in Appleby has been sold by owner Bob Haswell to an undisclosed Nelson buyer. Real estate company Bayley’s Nelson had the 2.5 hectare property, located on the corner of McShane Rd and State Highway 60, on the market for $750,000 plus GST. The complex includes a number of retail stores including a gallery, gift shop, garden centre, furniture store and cheese shop.

The sale did not include the Grape Escape Cafe which had been subdivided off from the rest of the property about six months ago. Cafe owners John and Penny Appelman say the sale doesn’t impact on their business and made it clear “we aren’t going anywhere”. The property has a resource consent to develop the complex which Bayley’s Nelson agent Reece Forbes had earlier said would provide an opportunity to increase the size of the Grape Escape.
Richmond woman stands for council Richmond’s Dana Wensley is the latest candidate to announce they are standing for the Tasman District Council in this year’s elections. Dana says she brings a strong track record in board experience, advocacy, and commercial acumen. Prior to raising a family, she worked as a commercial lawyer at Kensington Swan in Auckland. She has a PhD in medical law and ethics from King’s College in London and was appointed last year by the Minister of Health to serve as legal representative on the National Ethics Advisory Committee. She is also a director on the Copyright Licensing Board, and currently serves as the consumer representative on the Hospital Advisory Committee of the Nelson Marlborough District Dana Wensley Health Board. “Building inclusive communities where health, housing, well-being, and infrastructure are seen as interconnected cogs in the wheel, not disconnected parts of the whole, is what I want to push at the council level,” she says Standing for Tasman District Council, she hopes to bring a woman’s voice to the council chamber following the decision of Judene Edgar not to stand for re-election. “This area has so much to offer. I am standing for council because transparency and communication should be the bedrock of the relationship between council and its people. Recent indications are that this part of the relationship has broken down.”

Women airlifted to hospital: An early morning hunting trip turned to disaster for two women this morning when they had to be airlifted to Nelson Hospital. The women were with another person on a quad bike when the vehicle went over a steep bank in Manaroa Bay in the Pelorus Sound, throwing them into the water with serious injuries. Two women, one a local Pelorus Sound resident and the other a visitor from Lyttleton, had serious injuries after the crash but the third person was able to raise the alarm. “They were out hunting and were in an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) and had been riding down a road,” he said. “The ATV left the road and went down a bank, about a 10m drop, and some of them had gone into the water. “The third person walked out to get help
Edwards into NZ bowls team: Nelson’s Kirsten Edwards has been added to the Blackjacks New Zealand bowls team for November’s World Championships. She comes into the team as replacement for Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Mandy Boyd who has had to withdraw for personal reasons. While the in-form Mandy will be missed the excellent depth of the women’s squad means that they are able to call on the very experienced Val Smith to now skip both the women’s triples and fours. Kirsten will therefore slot into Val’s previous positions.

Storm causes widespread power cuts Simon Bloomberg Power to around 900 homes in Nelson and Tasman was cut last week after strong winds swept across the region leaving a trail of fallen trees and damaged powerlines. Redwood Valley was one of the worst-hit areas with 450 customers losing power at 10.40pm on Wednesday when strong winds caused trees to contact power lines. Four hundred customers had their power supplies restored by 11.30pm with most of the remainder reconnected by 2am on Thursday Two hundred and fourty customers in Atawhai also lost power for 90 minutes due to trees contacting power lines. In Moutere township, a tree blew into power lines resulting in a broken power pole and 250 customers losing power at 10.30pm with power restored five hours later. Network Tasman chief executive Wayne Mackey says there were a number of smaller faults throughout the district due to the storm. He says Network Tasman’s staff and contractors worked in difficult conditions to restore power supplies. White Rd near Richmond was also closed on Thursday morning after trees were blown across the road after heavy rain and strong winds overnight. Contractors were clearing trees on Thursday morning and the road was soon reopened.

Le Tour exhausting for George's biggest fans
Simon Bloomberg
The Tour de France is only half way through and already proud Nelson parents Paul and Marina Bennett are exhausted after all the late nights and early mornings watching their son George racing in 'Le Tour'. And it's not just the long hours glued to the television that are taking their toll. The stress of watching George flying down steep mountain roads at insanely high speeds or riding elbow-toelbow in the middle of a seething, testosterone-charged peloton in a hideous cross-wind is, at times, "too much".
George Bennett on his first bike at age three.
"I can't watch some of it," Marina confesses. "It's too much for me it's too stressful. "Even when he got into that break and was going well, I couldn't watch all of it - I was too anxious and I went to bed. Then I got a text from our daughter Holly at two in the morning saying George was at the front so I jumped out of bed and went and watched again." But the worst moment, so far, for Paul and Marina has been the crash on stage 11 where George was forced off the road and catapulted head first into a ditch. Paul says the five or six seconds that George lay motionless on the side of the road seemed like an eternity. "It was really hard to watch, especially when he didn't move for so long," Paul says. "He's pretty tough so I knew it was bad when he just lay there - you start thinking what if it's serious and he ends up in a wheelchair. "But thankfully he got up and going again. We spoke to him that night and he was pretty sore - he had a headache and neck ache and he'd split his helmet in two." Interestingly, Paul admits his biggest fear for George, and all the riders, is the sinister threat of terrorism. The tragic death of

Marina and Paul Bennett have been following their son George in the Tour de France. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. 84 people in the terrorist attack in Nice on Bastille Day has only heightened those fears. "The thing that really worries me is terrorism because the tour is such a soft target," Paul says. "It's on the world stage and there are 3000km of roads and big crowds, so it's uncontrollable - I really hope that nothing like that ever happens."
Although Paul jokes that he wishes George had become "an accountant or a doctor because it would be a far less stressful career", he says they are very proud of his performance in the tour and his selection for the Rio Olympics. Paul says George has also been fortunate to have received plenty of good support from the Nelson
cycling fraternity on his journey to the pro tour. "We can't take any of the credit for this - in fact we are always gobsmacked that we have produced a kid like this. Neither of us are competitive and although we always encouraged him, we never pushed him. "We found a tricycle from the Moutere dump and gave it to him when he was three and that was about it. Cleve [Shearer] and Jon [Linyard] probably had more to do with it because they took him mountainbiking on a school camp to Hanmer Springs and that got him started." However, Paul and Marina can take credit for the values they have instilled in George which have played a big part in his success. George's seventh place on stage nine may have been was a highlight, but Paul and Marina say they have really enjoyed seeing him racing with integrity. "We really enjoyed seeing him help out his team-mate Wilco Kelderman when he crashed and it was nice to see that he was really concerned about that spectator he ran into." Paul says. George was in 46th place on Monday morning after 15 stages of the tour.

500 healthier homes for Nelson Kate Russell The Hmun Luai family is looking forward to having a warmer home soon, thanks to the locally-run Warmer Healthier Homes scheme, which has insulated nearly 500 homes in the past two years. The family say that their Washington Valley home, which they purchased a few months ago, is damp, cold and not retaining heat, despite having a pellet fire and heat pump running all the time. During winter, the house only sees the sun between 11am – 3pm, and they spend every morning wiping condensation from the windows. But, they say the worst thing is constantly having “very cold feet” due to bare floor boards and no underfloor insulation. That’s where the Warmer Healthier Homes scheme comes in, and they have organised contractors Absolute Energy to come and insulate the Hmun Luai’s home in a few weeks time. The scheme services Nelson, Tasman, and more recently, Marlborough, and was initiated by the Rata Foundation. It is now governed by its own steer-
ing group, with funding and support from the foundation, Nelson Tasman Housing Trust, Nelson Marlborough DHB, Nelson City Council and Marlborough District Council. The Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority (EECA) matches the funding that these other organisations collectively put into the scheme. Chairman Bill Dahlberg says they are aiming to assist more families like the Hmun Luais, and estimates there are still around 4500 homes in Nelson that need to be insulated. “Around a quarter of the people who live in those homes are people who are really needy and have a health concern,” says Bill. Bill also says that out of the 480 homes they have completed so far, 45 percent have been tenanted, and the rest have been owner-occupied properties. “Eighty per cent of the homes we have insulated have been for a health need, and were referred by a health agency,” says Bill. “We are only just a wee way down the path. Now we can prove we can do it, we want to make it sustainable.”

Fishing celebrated at annual blessing Jessie Johnston Once again the annual Blessing of the Fleet event drew a large crowd as locals remembered those lost at sea and celebrated the importance of the fishing industry to Nelson. The event began last Friday night with a fireworks display while Saturday saw people gather at Sunderland Marine Pier for the blessing ceremony. The day included musical performances by the Nelson Male Choir, Motueka Brass Band, the Salvation Army Band and Nelson Christian Academy, while the blessing was conducted by Bishop Richard Elena. Graeme Bennett, father of Paul Bennett who died at sea when the FV Jubilee sank last year, threw the wreath into the water, followed by a minute’s silence, which was broken by eight bell tolls. “Nelson is Australasia’s biggest fishing port by far,” says Mike Smith, chairperson for the Blessing of the Fleet committee. “There’s more fish landed over the wharf than anywhere else in Australia or New Zealand, it’s a vital part of the economy, a lot of people are not aware of that. An event like this just shows what this industry is worth to the region.” Five people were lost at sea last year, including two from Nelson, “that’s the true price of fish unfortunately, people die catching them,” says Mike. “[We’re here today] because Granddad was involved in the sea, so it’s just been in our family, it's part of our history,” say Tina and Chris Fortune. “We’ve got our own vessel as well, so it’s important that we remember those and play our part in the whole celebration of the sea.” After the ceremony, the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter entertained the crowds by performing a winch rescue, before the coastguard demonstrated fire fighting at sea.

Craig Sisterson. nelsonlive.co.nz [and Waimea Weekly] seem to be the go-to paper! Cynthia McConville. TDC problems: There’s been a spate of attention grabbing news stories about the Tasman District Council. First, a ‘funding shortfall’ of $493,000
for the Shed 4 retail complex. Then, headlines that Brightwater landowner Aaron Baigent is taking the council to the Environmental Court. This was followed swiftly by the news that the council may have to pay $20,000, after it was found to be in breach of agreement in relation to the Mapua lease for Hamish’s ice-cream parlour. The only good news of late was that the Commerce Commission has dropped its examination of TDC for potential anti-competitive practices. Good news, but with an estimated price tag of between $75,000 - $80,000 in defending the claim. How does the public decipher these seemingly disconnected cases? It’s an accumulation of behaviour. Granting 20-year consents using a nonnotified process. Granting waste management contracts till 2023 without going through a renewed tender process. Safeguarding its own commercial interests in Mapua over interests of the community. These are all indications that transparency and communication, which should be the bedrock of the relationship between council and its people, have failed. In the upcoming elections we will see if voters want a change. Dana Wensley, Richmond. To have your say on any local issue, email us at editorial@waimeaweekly. co.nz. Bridget Budget answers your questions
Q: Do you have any tips to
help me keep my power bill in check?
A: In winter the two biggest contributors
to your power bill will be hot water and space heating. Here are some ideas for reducing winter costs:
Find the cheapest power provider for your needs at powerswitch.org.nz Consider a smooth pay option- this means you make the same weekly payments year-round. Adjust your hot water cylinder temperature; 60°C is high enough. Insulate/wrap the hot water cylinder & check for cylinder leaks. Conserve hot water with short showers & cold machine washes. Heat pumps are cheaper than any other electric heater. Set the heat pump at around 21 degrees, rather than higher. Only use the heat pump or heater when you are in the room. Check that the heat pump is set to Heat, NOT Auto or Cool. Unflued gas heaters are the most expensive to run, make your home damp and emit toxic fumes. Turn appliances off at the wall. Use energy efficient light bulbs. Dry your clothes outside. Find more energy advice at energywise.govt.nz and consumer.org.nz. Send any questions to nelsonbudget@xtra.co.nz

Andrew Board Picking up beaten women from Nelson Hospital with bruises around their neck and broken bones is just one of the heart-breaking jobs left to staff at Nelson Women’s Refuge. Next week is Women’s Refuge Appeal week and Nelson manager Katie O’Donnell says it important for the organisation to attract as much donor support as possible as the money goes directly to helping the refuge support women and children. Each week around 50 incidents of domestic violence are reported to police in Nelson. Katie says that the true figure of domestic violence incidents is more likely to be 200 a week in our area. That ranges from people being controlled by their partner to those physically abused and the children who get caught up in the violence. Katie says in the past year her staff have picked up women from Nelson Hospital with a range of injuries, including broken ribs, strangulation bruising on their neck, and bruises on other parts of their bodies. “That is our bread and butter. For women it can be very depressing and very isolating.” She says the number of reported violence cases are “steady” but is rising as population increases and as other agencies work together to help identify family violence cases. “It is a significant problem.” This year marks women’s refuge’s 40th

Katie says the organisation has undergone various different names over that time. “We’ve changed a lot, back in the 70s it was a small group of volunteers who just did it, they’d put people up in their own homes. Now we’re professionalised with social workers with degrees and we have a very structured way of working and funding that we report on.” Katie says each year the refuge works with around 300-400 women and children in Nelson. The money raised from their appeal goes to help cover costs. “When women come to us, often everything has broken down, no money,
no home, no job, a risk of losing their children and violence. So we help them with all of that, we walk alongside them. We rely on the community to help us to do that by donating to us. “Every time we’re able to help a woman and a child, it’s the best feeling you can get and that’s what the money is used for – to help women and children.” To donate to Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge either deposit money into their bank account, send a cheque, or find them next Wednesday to Friday at either their appeal stand in Nelson city or at Richmond, they will be dressed in purple. The bank account is 03-13550637312-00.

Students and teachers at Waimea College take the wonderful trees that grace their grounds for granted but retired woodwork teacher Wilson Hawke recalls a time when the school’s stark landscape looked like “some of the prisons in World War II Germany”. Wilson, 87, has been writing about the transformation of Waimea College’s grounds in his life story titled ‘A kid from Oxford’. A qualified cabinet maker, Wilson started a his woodworking career as a machinist for Christchurch furniture company Cox and Sons before travelling through Australia and the UK on woodworking holiday One of the more interesting jobs he had was helping restore the intricate joinery in Lambeth Palace, the London residence of the Arch Bishop of Canterbury, which had been damaged by a bomb in World War II. He started his woodwork teaching career at Westland High after returning to New Zealand and training at Auckland Secondary Teacher’s College in 1953. After five years on Hokitika, Wilson transferred to Waimea College where one of the first things he noticed was the absence of trees. But that soon changed thanks to two unrelated events - a series photos of the school grounds taken by some senior students in a photography class and the trail of destruction left by Cyclone Alison in 1975. “Keith Smith was involved with a photographic group and they came up with a series of photos of Waimea College,” Wilson says. “The photos were
in the staff room someone commented that they bore a remarkable resemblance to some of the prisons in World War II Germany, complete with incinerator chimneys. “It was an unkind remark but it was true - there was virtually no plantings. So the board appointed David Sissons to come up with a long-term landscaping plan and you can see the end result today - there’s lots of shade trees, shrubs that add so much to the aesthetics of the school.” Cyclone Alison was the catalyst for the next wave of plantings after Wilson salvaged a large Elm tree, that had been felled during the storm. He had it milled and was so impressed by the timber he started thinking about planting a wood lot for the school’s future woodwork classes. “We took the tree to the sawmill and had the boards and planks stacked to dry in the school timber shed. I remembered a lady we had in our night classes working on Elm and that planted the seed of establishing a woodlot to provide timber for our own classes.” Wilson says the school’s board of governors approved the scheme as a college project and the first planting took place in 1979. Although the initial planting for 80 pine trees was destroyed by hares, it was quickly replaced by 40 English oak trees which survived and became what is known as the English Block. Tasmanian Blackwoods and four varieties eucalypts were planted in the Australian Block on the embankment along the school’s northern boundary in 1981 followed by another European Block in 2003 and the

Lost GoPro unearths talent Andrew Board
When Nelson man Neil Benson downloaded footage from a GoPro camera that his daughter found, he was hoping to find some evidence of who owned it – what he found blew him away. “They were incredible,” he says. “I see these young men doing these flips around the place, it was a bit more exciting than what I expected.” Neil’s nine-year-old daughter Maria found the GoPro in a garden at St Joseph’s School after attending church last Sunday. She took
the camera straight to her dad. Later that night Neil, an IT expert by trade, downloaded the footage from the camera onto his laptop in the hope that there would be some people on the camera so he could find its owner. Its owner, Fajbian Sanerivi, was one of four teens who were filmed flipping, spinning, jumping and cartwheeling their way around the lawn and walls at St Joseph’s. Neil edited the footage and uploaded it to his Facebook page, asking if anyone knew the boys in the film. It attracted plenty of atten-

found. “I just went ‘yessssss’. We had the camera set up in different places and I just left it behind. I was gutted.” As well as getting his camera back, Fajbian says seeing the footage that Neil had edited was another bonus in the story. “It was really kind of him to do that and it looked awesome. It’s definitely encouraged us to upload more footage.” Fajbian, Crusoe Jones and Hamish Colvin say they practice their tricks as often as they can, finding walls, swings and gardens to use as take-off and landing platforms.
“I started doing it in Christchurch and when I moved to Nelson I just carried on and met these guys along the way. It’s just good fun,” says Fajbian. All three say they’ve never had any serious injury from their tricks and are inspired by videos they see on YouTube. Neil says returning the camera to the boys was a great story. “They’re really nice boys, they bought me a coffee and Maria a hot chocolate to say thanks. It’s really cool what they’re doing. I hope to see more videos of them in the future.”

Built in 2010, this large house is developed in the romantic revival style hailing from the 1800’s. It carefully blends classic grandeur with modern materials and construction techniques, which presents a house which is historically accurate while still being a warm and quiet retreat. Located 17 minutes from Richmond, this mansion house was a Nelson region ‘Home of the Year’ medalist.
There is extraordinary detail both inside and outside the house. Inside features tasteful wooden paneling, southern style lighting imported from the United States, and a magnificent spacious kitchen. The house includes four bedrooms, a library / office, gym, music room, grand foyer and a sweeping classical staircase. The grounds have been extensively planted for
privacy and landscaped to complement the house. There is a sizeable orchard producing superb summer fruit, and an arboretum planted out with specimen trees to provide a blaze of autumn colour. The property sits alongside the former southbound railway route and so there are historic railway features located across the grounds. The Waiiti River forms one of the
boundaries, and there are number of quiet spots to sit alongside the river, and a swimming hole to enjoy in summer. This property is inspired from a classic design dating back some 200 years, and it remains a distinctive and bold classic today. Few house designs remain timeless and enduring 200 years later, this home is a grand design and a legacy to last generations.

club waimea From the presidents pen One of the wonderful things about the community we live in is the selfless voluntary work done. Without volunteers, our society simply could not function in the way it does. The same can be said of Club Waimea. While we have some paid staff we Lewis Della Bosca simply could not function the way we do without the freely given voluntary efforts of many members, including all the elected executive members and the Directors. Our elected committee members are at the forefront of the club’s activities and deserve the thanks and support of our members. With 1500 members we bring together many interests in one club and we are proud to be home to numerous sporting and interest adjuncts, each in turn only able to function through the voluntary efforts of their members. Sometimes you can walk into the Club and it appears deserted, leading you to ask “what’s wrong with this place? Why aren’t people coming here?” Then you realise there is a meeting taking place in the Richmond Room, the card section is at play in the Waimea Room, a snooker challenge is being fought out behind the folding doors of the Trevor Rainbow room, tournaments are underway in the squash courts and on the bowling green and the hall is being readied for an evening function. Gone are the days when you measured the success of our Club by the number of people in the bar. Many interests, one club - CLUB WAIMEA.

Executive committee
In this month’s edition, the Club Waimea newsletter will be profiling the members of the new executive committee who have put their hands up to help direct the club towards a bigger and better future. The executive committee responsibilities include all matters pertaining to membership, member’s welfare, interest groups and sports sections, issues relating to the use of the club and its assets, club rules and discipline, convening general meetings, and assisting the board with annual and strategic plans.
Ivan Reed Chairman Re-elected in 2016, Ivan has been Chairman of the Executive for the last two years. Though he is retired, continues to work as well as enjoy his leisure time, in particular life at Club Waimea. Ivan’s love of rugby is about as strong as his dislike of Coronation St, which is why he believes it should be illegal for the show to be on television in the same time slot as the rugby. As a result you’ll often find Ivan watching the game at Club Waimea. Kevin McKenzie Sports Convenor Back for another term on the Executive, Kevin has also just been re-elected as Sports Convenor. “For me this is an ideal role as I have an enthusiasm for sport in general. I am always looking for and am keen to hear from members with ideas that could enhance the future of our Club. I am a firm believer of getting in and lending a hand when required. I have seen a number of changes within our Club as we have progressed over the years, and our sports sections always do well in any events we enter.” Cliff de Malmanche
Cliff is a member of Club Waimea’s indoor bowls section and has been club captain for the past six years, while other interests include rugby and family. “I would like to see the club expand with new members and move forward into the future, of which I would like to continue to be part.”

Roy Tomlinson Vice-President
After more than 30 years as a member of Club Waimea, Roy decided it was time to give back to the club, which is why he is proud to be in the position of Vice President. Roy is a long time supporter of sport in the community, having previously held positions in administration at local and provincial rugby level. Roy was also recently appointed president of the Richmond Bowling Club, a sport he has played most of his life and is a well known name in real estate.
John Andrews
John and his wife have not only been members of Club Waimea for around eight years, they’re also residents of the Club Waimea camp ground. As well as his interest in the efficient and successful operation of Club Waimea, John is also keen on rugby, golf, fishing and relaxing at the club a few times a week.
Beverley Hart
Beverley has been a member of Club Waimea for 36 years after moving to Richmond in 1960. With an interesting background as the daughter of a lighthouse keeper, Beverley has led a busy life within Club Waimea, joining the pool team, cooking and managing the Club Waimea kitchen and currently she is in the rugby section, as well as taking on a role within the executive committee, believing the club to be a great place to make friends and socialise.
Jason Marsh
it’s easy to become a member, simply call 543 9179 or visit www.clubwaimea.co.nz
A newbie on the Executive and one of the clubs’ younger members, Jason has close family ties that go right back to the formation of the club. “I want to encourage more young people to join- I believe it is only by attracting and welcoming them that we grow and secure the clubs’ future.” Jason is also a very good hunter and once he get’s his sights set on something, there’s no getting away.

Richmond fibre group thrilled with win Jessie Johnston
When Richmond Creative Fibre filled out a registration form for the 2016 Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards, they felt they had little hope of winning anything. This feeling was strengthened when their secretary, Janie Hall and president, Karyn Batt attended the awards night. “There were so many people at the awards, so many different volunteer groups, it’s just incredible how many there are,” says Janie. “We just thought ‘look at all these people, no way are we going to win anything’.” But when it came time to announce the Arts and Culture award, the section Richmond Creative Fibre had entered into, the group was named the winner, receiving $500 as well as their award. “So we were literally blown away,” says Janie. The group was formed in 1973 for those interested in spinning and weaving but over the years has come to incorporate a number of other crafts. It was only in the last few years the group changed its name to Richmond Creative Fibre, bringing it in line with the national body. With a total membership of 64,

As well as working on their own projects, the decision to award Richmond Creative Fibre with the Arts and Culture award was down to the huge amount of work they do for charity. Members were involved in the Slippers for Schools initiative that saw them create 300 pairs of slippers for children to wear over winter, they sent 13 boxes of knitted garments and blankets to Christchurch which were
distributed through the Salvation Army for families post earthquake and are regularly knitting hats for cancer patients and items for premature babies in the Special Care Baby Unit at the Nelson Hospital. The group even sends their creations overseas to places like Nepal where their ‘Fish and Chip’ jumpers help keep young children warm, the jumpers getting their name because they were made for babies that didn’t have
anything warm to put on so they were wrapped in newspaper. “In Creative Fibre groups the ladies are very generous, they like to do things for others, but our group is particularly [generous],” says Karyn. “If you suggest something to them or they hear something, they bring it back to the group and they’re all go, they’re just full of enthusiasm and really appreciate their craft because they know that it helps other people.”

Sport Julian Matthews' long run to Rio www.shuttersport.co.nz
Jacob Page
IDEATION CHT0001-A
Nelson 1500m runner Julian Matthews had a barbecue with Nick Willis and Hamish Carson to celebrate their Olympic selection last week. For the first time in history, New Zealand will have three entrants in one of the blue riband track events. The trio then spoke on the phone to Rod Dixon, the last Nelsonian to compete on the track at the Olympics in 1972, when he won bronze in the 1500m. "The three of us in the 1500m had a barbecue together to celebrate and Nick called Rod Dixon and we had a really nice speaker phone conversation with him," Julian says. "You could tell by his voice that he was just as excited about it. "We also spoke to Dick Quax and I know, for Hamish and I and probably Nick too, these guys are Gods so to have them be excited and proud of what we've achieved is just crazy." The 28-year-old's first taste
of running was at the Colgate Games as a 12-year-old. He won silver in the 1500m and also came second to All Black Ryan Crotty in the 800m. "My primary school teacher at St Joseph's is an avid runner, Mr Tim Cross, and I think he saw something in me at 12 years old and put me on a training schedule for the South Island Colgate Games." Basketball was his major interest through to 17 until American university running coach from Texas Greg Lautenslager arrived in Nelson in 2002. "Greg played a huge part in instilling the passion in me for running that eventually overran my enthusiasm for basketball.” Julian has been based in America for the past eight years, pushing his running dream and getting a degree in economics. He made the NCAA finals in 2010, running against the best collegiate runners in America. Julian says he's "just scraped by this year" financially, describing himself as a "second tier runner.”
Julian Matthews is off to compete at the Rio Olympics next month. "It's hard to make ends meet when you aren't competing at major events like the Diamond League meetings.” A shoe sponsorship with Saucony has helped him through this year, along with help from Athletics New Zealand, to cover expenses. "If I perform well then maybe I'll get a grant from High Performance Sport New Zealand which would ease that burden." Julian says to compete in the

black singlet in a marque Olympic event was an unbelievable feeling. "You dream about it when you're a kid but you can't fathom how much time goes into getting to an Olympics. "Now that I'm here and I can call myself an Olympian, it's quite overwhelming. "I've always been inspired by the likes of Jack Lovelock, Peter Snell, John Walker and Rod Dixon, so
to wear that black singlet will be very special.” Julian is currently in Flagstaff, Arizona, a high altitude training base for a lot of American athletes. He finished 16th at the Beijing World Championships last year. "In realistic terms, I was extremely happy with my performance last year based on the lack of preparation I had. "Having hit the qualifier earlier in the season, I've been able to plan my programme towards getting through the rounds in Rio. "I think making the final (top 12); I'd be very, very happy and once you're in the final anything can happen when it comes down to tactics." Julian returns to Nelson every summer and says the amount of support he's received from home has been amazing. "I know Nelson has some really good, young runners coming through, so if I can inspire someone and show them that you can make it to the big stage as they watch me on TV, that'd be great."

PUNCTURE REPAIRS 69 As far as sporting clichés go “you have to lose a final to win one” is about is rubbish as they come, but it may, however, hold some truth for Wanderers this Saturday. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers predictably overran its fierce rival Waimea Old Boys at Brightwater on Saturday, 38-6, to earn a spot in the Nelson Bays division one club rugby final this Saturday. Wanderers has been the form team all season and will head into this weekend’s final against Marist as firm favourites. But coach Todd Bavin has first-hand experience that the favourites tag doesn’t always count for much. Two months ago, Wanderers, as defending champions, headed into the Tasman Trophy final against Nelson, before losing to the overwhelming underdogs. Todd says his side will take that ex-
perience and learn from it for this weekend’s final. “Finals are different games and different occasions, other teams lift and Nelson did that by 20 per cent [in the Tasman Trophy final] and we didn’t. We need to plan well and prepare so that come 3pm on Saturday we’re hissing and ready to go.” He says he has little doubt that the side will rise to the occasion this time round. “We had a pool session on Sunday and everyone is pretty focused. The biggest thing now is calming nerves and emotions.” The division one final kicks off at 3pm this Saturday at Trafalgar Park. Wanderers’ club manager Diane Drogemuller says the clubrooms will be open for supporters and sponsors after the game.

Netballers have had their go, now Saxton to host basketball Jacob Page Nelson’s Saxton Stadium will host the New Zealand under-19 boys’ basketball tournament starting Wednesday with Tasman looking to avoid the wooden spoon for a second straight year. Coach Steve Bill says the team faces a difficult pool after last year. “We have one game we are looking to target in particular that should get us on the right track.” He says the team has speed but
lacks size. It had been an interesting week at national tournaments for Tasman sports teams. The under-17 girls basketballers went undefeated in pool play but were beaten by North Harbour in the quarter-finals and had to settle for sixth on the North Shore. At the same venue, the under-17 boys basketballers finished ninth. The Tasman under-19 netball team avoided last and finished 15th in their national tourna-
ment at Saxton Stadium last week, a win over North Wairoa helping them off the bottom. Wellington beat Auckland in the final. Nelson and Marlborough shared the under-52kg regional rugby tournament title after a 15-all draw in the final. Several players from the Nelson team ended up making the tournament team. The Tasman women’s under-18 hockey team finished 14th at their national tournament in Timaru last week.

A 5-0 win over Nelson College 2nd XI at Jubilee Park on Saturday sealed their first title in 25 years. After a slow start, Richmond has scored a league-leading 52 goals. “We lost our first game to Golden Bay and the boys got together and realised they needed to work on
scoring goals,” coach Toby Gaskin says. Toby says the team has a good mix of youth and experience and they trained each week with the Richmond division one team which had allowed players to slot into the division two environment while also allowing the young players to get a feel for a higher grade of football. “The guys train hard and while they might get beaten in a training game against the top boys, they can often

Waimea bow out after over-achieving in ‘down year’ Waimea Old Boys had their division one campaign ended at the semi-final stage by a rampant Wanderers team eager to win back-toback titles. The 38-6 results was always going to be a likely score-line after Waimea had pipped Stoke for the final playoff berth with a gritty win the previous week. Coach Mark Milne was philosophical about the outcome but pleased at the season his team had produced. “I think the outcome was pretty predictable, we were fortunate to be there and gave it everything we had, but we were out-matched. “To have two senior teams make semi-finals in what has been a down year for us is something to feel extremely good about.” Mark says, considering they had lost 13 frontline players since their first round match with Kahurangi, the players did well. “I’m really rapt with the group we ended up having this season. “They all tried their hearts out in

That’s a tough position at the best of times, but Bailey would play anywhere. “Ben Coman was another who gave us everything he had.” Mark says he is keen to stick around for 2017 and expected Waimea Old Boys to be stronger for their 2016 experience. “The governance of this club is strong and now it’s a case of getting it going on the field, and there are already plans in place to ensure that happens next year. “My coaching staff and I will always be around the club and will always help the club, but I’d like to think I’ll be back [as a coach next year].”

A pop-pass and a runaway try sealed Waimea Old Boys division two’s fate in their 19-16 loss to Riwaka at Jubilee Park. The turnover came with 10 minutes remaining and coach Wayne Bateman says they couldn’t get back in the game. “We still had time but we infringed at the wrong time and never gave ourselves another chance. Credit to Riwaka, their defence was amazing and they were strong at the breakdown.” Wayne says it was the first time since he started coaching the team that he had suffered injuries to key players leading up to the playoffs.
It’s meant a number of under-18 players have received senior rugby experience. Wayne says his team deserves to be proud of their efforts. “After the way we started, losing to Nelson and Marist, I felt we stepped up and got better each week. We scored some great long-range tries and our defence was solid.” Wayne says he is keen to return next year with all coaches having to reapply for their jobs. “As long as I’m enjoying what I do, I’ll keep doing it, and this year we had a great group of players who got really close to the end goal.”

MOTOCROSS: Nelson’s Clayton Roeske is keen to prove himself at the Nelson Motocross Championships this weekend. The champs are being held at MotoXpark at 88 Valley this Saturday and Sunday. Clayton eyes two titles at Nelson Motocross Champs Jacob Page Clayton Roeske is planning on winning both the junior and senior 125cc class at the Nelson Motocross Championships at MotoXpark at 88 Valley Rd near Wakefield this weekend. The 16-year-old finished third overall at the National Battle of the Clubs event in Taupo. The Nayland College pupil currently has a junior ranking of seventh in New Zealand and is keen to dominate the two-day Nelson Championships on his home track.
Clayton has been racing since 10 and riding bikes since he was three. “My first memory was the second time I got on a bike, I was just going around on our lawn and I went under a trampoline and smashed my face.” Clayton’s dad Bert used to race bikes and still helps rebuild his son’s Yamaha YZ125 in the garage regularly. Clayton is being mentored by Motueka-based Kiwi motocross legend Josh Coppins. “Back when I was riding 88ccs, I was asked to do a
training day with him at his place. “We talked more and more and now I work at his workshop during the holidays. “In the summer he has all his team riders up there and it’s good to get to know them as they’re all senior riders.” Clayton says he would like to race in Australia one day but would also like the opportunity to get the 1NZ on his bike as a national champion. Event co-ordinator Bryan Heaphy says the event will be contested under a new course design, including the
Henry’s
new ‘Table-top Alley’ which has two table-top jumps of 23m and 28m respectively. “We’ve also managed to secure the voice of New Zealand motocross, Neil Ritchie, which will be great.” Racing starts at 10.30am on Saturday and 10am Sunday, with the last day featuring the top 20 junior and senior riders racing one-on-one for one lap in an elimination event. A new track layout means spectators will have great vantage points. The new layout is also expected to provide a challenge for riders.

Feedback invited on regional landfill proposal
Draft Traffic Control Bylaw 2016
Tasman District Council is proposing a change to how it controls and operates Eves Valley landfill. You are invited to make a submission on the proposal, which would see Nelson City and Tasman District Councils operate a landfill that serviced the whole region, rather than each operating individual landfills. As part of the proposal, the Councils will transfer 50% control of Eves and York Valley landfills to each other. A Regional Landfill Business Unit would be created to run the regional landfill, and would be a controlled by a joint committee of the two councils. The arrangement is intended to reduce our long-term costs and better meet the Councils’ joint aim of reducing waste volumes in the region. To proceed with the arrangement, we are amending our Long Term Plan 2015 – 2025.
The Tasman District Council seeks your view on a new Traffic Control Bylaw. A statement of proposal, the draft bylaw, a summary of information, and submission form is available for viewing on the Council’s website, www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback and at the following Council offices and libraries during normal opening hours: • Main Office, 189 Queen Street, Richmond • Motueka Service Centre, 7 Hickmott Place, Motueka • Golden Bay Service Centre, Junction Street, Takaka • Murchison Service Centre, 92 Fairfax Street, Murchison • Tasman District Library, Queen Street, Richmond • Motueka Library, Pah Street, Motueka • Takaka Library, Commercial Street, Takaka You are welcome to make a submission on the draft Traffic Control Bylaw 2016. Submissions close at 4.00pm on Wednesday 3 August 2016. The draft bylaw is now available for consultation in accordance with Section 83 of the Local Government Act 2002.
Find out more: All the detail, including information on the proposal’s impact on capital spending, debt, rates and waste disposal charges is available on our website, www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback. You can also view the consultation document at Council service centres and libraries or call in at the public drop-in session at Council’s office in Queen St, Richmond on 11 July, 5.30 pm – 7.00 pm to discuss the proposal. Make a submission: You can make an online submission at www.tasman.govt.nz/feedback or pick up a submission form at Council service centres and libraries. Consultation is open from 4 July – 5 August 2016.
Dog registration If you have a dog aged three months or older you have to register it. The fee for dogs that have not been registered by 1 August will increase by 50% on top of the standard urban or rural registration fee. If you have just moved here or have not registered your dog before please call the Council on Ph. 03 543 8400.
Rivercare Meetings 2016 The Council is holding its annual Rivercare meetings throughout the District. All interested members of the public are invited to discuss river management issues and works. Topics will include flood protection, riparian maintenance and erosion control and there may be others which may be significant to the area you live. If you are planning to attend one of these meetings and have a specific question or topic you would like discussed, please contact Rivers and Coastal Engineer Giles Griffith on 03 543 7244 or Email: giles.griffith@tasman.govt.nz.
