proposed Waimea Community Dam doesn’t go ahead. The Tasman District Council supplies up to 17,500 cubic metres of water a day to urban users around the Waimea Plains but under new rules that will be cut by up to 80 percent if the dam project doesn’t proceed. And council’s engineering manager Richard Kirby says
that will have “dire consequences” for urban users with step five rationing limiting households to just 80 litres of water per person a day. “That basically means enough water for sanitation, drinking and food preparation and one or two showers and toilet flushes a day – that’s it. Houses will be pushed
into Third World conditions. “A toilet flush is around nine litres. Nine or 10 flushes and all the water is gone. “There’s also good chance that we’d have to shut off supply to Nelson Pine Industries and Alliance Freezing Works and any businesses that are big water users. Even at step three rationing,

It’s not a wise decision. It’s hard enough with the traffic as it is. I don’t think it will be any good for safety.
I think it’s absolutely ridiculous. The traffic will be absolutely bedlam. It’s not an ideal spot.
It shouldn’t have been approved. I can see it causing a huge amount of traffic flow problems.

Supermarket decision ignores safety concerns Judene Edgar Reporter
judene@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Salisbury Road residents are angry and disheartened that a largescale Countdown supermarket has been approved, on the corner of Champion and Salisbury roads, by Tasman District Council, despite fears over pedestrian and cyclist safety. At their meeting last Thursday, councillors approved the rezoning of 1.32 hectares of residential land to commercial, making way for a 3200 square metre Countdown supermarket. There will also be a 200 square metre retail and commercial development, a 600 square metre commercialcommunity facility and associated car parking. Marchwood Grove resident Peter Rait considers the decision by councillors “gutless” and “a nightmare”.

“I’m just horrified by the decision, to be honest”, Peter says. Fellow Marchwood Grove resident and former council engineer, Jim Wareing, agrees. “It is already quite hard and dangerous for students, and for people trying to get to the sports fields, to cross the road at the roundabout”. Garin College Board of Trustees chairwoman Lisa Dunn says that “we’re disappointed that the decision has been made to approve the supermarket. “We were worried about the impact of extra traffic, particularly large delivery trucks, as there is already a great amount of usage, by folks of all ages, any time of the day, accessing Saxton Field and the aquatic centre, as well as students going to Garin, St Paul’s and Waimea College”. Richmond councillor Dana Wensley says that she voted against the decision. “I thought we needed more knowledge

While Lisa remains hopeful that they’ll work with the school and local community to make the roading as safe as possible, Jim is less confident. He says the resource consent for the New World supermarket at Three Brother Corner was non-notified and that none of the local residents were

Peter echoes his concerns. “I’ve never believed that there would be any consultation with neighbours under the resource consent. The plan change was our one shot”, he says. While trading activities are not allowed to commence until the roundabout has been upgraded, council transportation manager Jamie McPherson confirmed that there is no funding set aside for the upgrade within the 20152025 Long Term Plan. “With the new draft Long Term Plan we will be looking at the timing of the project, taking into account current growth and future needs”, says Jamie. Council will also be “talking to NCC about pedestrian and cycleway linkages and the new velodrome access way”, he says. There is a 30-day appeal period.

No dam “dire” for district from PAGE 1 consumption, depending which scheme you are on, would occur in nine out of 10 years. It would have been enforced an average of 31 days a year over the last 17 years with a high of 101 days in the dry summer of 2000-2001 under the new rules. Step five rationing, with a limit of 80 litres per person per day, would occur once every six to 10 years. Step five would have been enforced in three summers (2000-2001, 2002-2003 and 2005-2006) in the last 17 years which Dwayne says is higher than initially reported. “My initial assessment of step five rationing was once every 10-15 years but, after taking another look at the figures, maybe it should be a little more like one in every six to 10 years. It’s really hard to say given the irregular nature of severe droughts.” Richard says households typically used more water during dry weather suggesting that council couldn’t rely on people to limit consumption during

readers would take two weeks to get around every house so that wouldn’t work either. “We’d need to drop the water pressure which means people would have to fill up buckets with water and tip it over themselves to have shower. When we had severe restrictions in Manawatu and Feilding, we had people with buckets in the shower and they used the shower water to flush the toilets. “We are painting a very dire picture here but we are not scaremongering, this is reality. I’m being straight up and down on the impacts of no dam – we are stating exactly what we, as a water supplier, will have to apply to the users.” Public consultation on the dam proposal, including the final funding model and its impact on rates and water charges is due to take place from November. A final decision on whether to proceed with construction of the $82.5million dam is likely in early 2018.

Red tape removed for cancer patients Judene Edgar Hundreds of cancer patients put on the Jobseeker benefit have had a reprieve, with the government doing an about-face on the requirement to obtain four-weekly medical certificates in order to receive a benefit. The 2013 welfare reforms saw the sickness benefit, unemployment benefit and sole parenting/widow support for parents of children over 14 years of age merged into Jobseeker Support. The primary focus of Jobseeker Support is getting beneficiaries looking for work. The change meant cancer patients had to get fourweekly medical certificates to prove their ongoing illness, which Nelson Cancer Society manager Michelle Hunt says is unmanageable and unnecessary. “When you first get diagnosed it can take up to 4 weeks just to see a specialist. It adds extra travel, cost and a hassle at an already incred-
ibly stressful and difficult time.” Richmond Town Hall facility manager Mary-Ann McNatty is currently in remission and has recently returned to work, but she says that the system is failing to meet the needs of people with cancer. “For people who are really ill it’s such an unfair system”, she says. “I think there should be an equivalent system to ACC for workers who are struck down with illness rather than the current system which is humiliating and embarrassing.” Minister of Social Development Anne Tolley previously defended this requirement, however, significant work by the Cancer Society has led to the change whereby “clients just need to provide one medical certificate for 13 weeks cover”, says Anne. Nationally around 70 new applications for assistance are submitted to the Ministry each month. The changes were announced by the Minister in May.

Rotary gives $27,000 to charities Simon Bloomberg The Nelson Wine and Food Festival won’t be moving to the A & P Showgrounds next year after festival-goers made it clear they wanted “a wine and food festival to be held in a winery.” The Richmond Rotary Club announced the festival will be staying at Middle-Earth Vineyards in Brightwater when they presented proceeds from the festival to charities at a function at Club Waimea on Monday night. The festival has raised over $370,000 for the region’s charities and community groups over the last 13 years and, on Monday, Rotary added another $20,000 to that total.
“We gave out $20,000 tonight and we’ll be giving another $7000 to other community groups and individuals throughout the year,” one of the festival committee members Pete Glue says. The charities receiving donations on Monday night were the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust, Fifeshire Foundation, Brightwater Rural Fire Force, Nelson Cancer Society and Nelson Heart Foundation. Rotary will also make donations to the Nelson Tasman Hospice, Wanderers Sports Club, Brightwater School, Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade, Nelson Coast Guard, St John Ambulance and Brightwater Hall committee.
Pete says organising the festival is “a real team effort” and thanked his “hard working committee” and event sponsors Gold Pine, Fertilizer New Zealand, Knapps Lawyers, MiddleEarth Vineyard, Taylor Timbers and Moutere Logging. All their sponsors are keen to continue supporting the event, he says. Pete says they are already working on some new ideas for next year’s festival including providing more shade for patrons and having a cooking demonstration. Ticket prices will be increased by $5 but that will include a glass which previously had to be purchased separately. Next year’s festival will be held on Sunday, February 18.

The Tasman District Council almost dropped the ball on one key issue last week and can’t afford a knock-on when it considers another critical subject on Thursday. Council’s meeting went into extra time last Wednesday when the score was locked at 7-7 after councillors voted on a resolution to increase funding for the proposed Waimea Dam. Fortunately, mayor Richard Kempthorne ruled in favour of the resolution and now council and their partners, Waimea Irrigators Ltd, can continue working towards a fair and equitable way to fund the dam. But it shouldn’t have been a close call. It should have been 14-0 whitewash because we are running out of water and by far the best solution to the problem is to build the Waimea Dam. If we don’t, irrigators will lose millions of dollars of crops, hundreds of jobs will disappear overnight and freezing works and timber processing plants will be forced to close during dry spells. It will also hit close to home with bans on watering gardens and washing clothes. The district’s growth will also be stunted without water to service new industries, businesses and homes. And the problem won’t go away. In fact, it’s about to get worse, with new gamechanging limits on the minimum flows in the Waimea River to be enforced no later than 2019. Time is running out and council needs to show some resolve to get out of its own 22 and carry this project across the goal line. Councillors face another big test on Thursday when they consider the first wave of applications for Special Housing Areas. The sheer number of applications makes that a daunting task but council can’t afford to kick any of them into touch. Tasman has a housing crisis and Special Housing Areas, which allow developers to fast-track residential sections onto the market, are the only answer to the problem. It’s not going to be easy for council. They won’t win any popularity contests if they build a dam and they will need to think outside the square on Special Housing Areas. But there’s no alternative because the Tasman district doesn’t have a future without water and houses. Have your say email us editorial@waimeaweek ly.co.nz

Menzshed put refugees on their bikes Judene Edgar Reporter
judene@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Waimea Menzshed is making a real difference to the lives of Nelson refugees, thanks to a donation of bikes from NZ Post. NZ Post bikes are decommissioned after five years and then, under a scheme initiated two years ago, given away to local community groups. The groups chosen must have a genuine need for them, are required to re-paint them, and, following NZ Post tradition, keep them in good condition. Menzshed co-ordinator Alan Kissell says that the project “is a great opportunity that just fell into place”. The Red Cross refugees were already coming to the Menzshed as part of a volunteer work experience scheme, but the donation of the bikes has completely changed the programme. Menzshed member Simon Allen, who is leading the project, says that it was a great opportunity to add value to the refugees’ work experience. “Each refugee gets to help take the bike apart, re-paint and re-assemble, learn how to

Red Cross volunteer work experience supervisor Margo Ruhen says that the volunteer work experience programme is
a new initiative with an initial five intakes each year and each refugee doing a minimum of six weeks’ work. The current intake has refugees from Colombia, Bhutan and Myanmar and includes a metal worker, teacher, pharmacist, shopkeeper and office worker.
Margo, who also runs the refugee driver training programme, says that most of the refugees don’t have any transportation, so this provides them with a way to get around and an opportunity for them to practice the road rules. Refugee Pema Tamang, who arrived from Bhutan last October,
says that “it’s going to be a good way to get around until I get my drivers licence”. Menzshed are currently preparing to send off a photo of their first recommissioned bike to NZ Post and, if happy, they have the opportunity to receive up to 70 bikes.

UEEN STREET
What you need to know Contractors are replacing the street surface in the area between Gladstone Road and Noel Leeming (Stage 1), creating a protective layer over the new underground pipes and a new street-top design. In July the finishing street-top touches will be added in Stage 1, including trees and street furniture. Work on the underground infrastructure continues in Stage 2, from Noel Leeming to Cambridge Street. There’s lots to see in this area, with diggers and machinery working away in the construction zone, as well as wacky mirrors, colourful chalkboards and information panels along the footpath to have fun with. Head down there to see what’s happening and support our local businesses at the same time.
Key things to remember: • All shops are open for business as usual • Vehicle access is restricted from Gladstone Road to just before Cambridge Street • Parking is available on much of Queen Street, and in the many carparks at the rear of the shops (accessible from the ring road) • Free all-day parking is available at the Richmond Showgrounds

House prices keep rising The median price of houses in the Tasman district rose 27 per cent to $545,500 over the last year, the REINZ figures for May show. Nelson city houses prices rose 12 per cent to $482,500. Sales volume compared to May 2016 increased 10 per cent to 86 in Nelson City and five per cent to 78 in the Tasman district. REINZ chief executive Bindi Norwell says the real estate market across the top of the South Island is robust with a new record median prices and year-on-year growth in sales volumes. Making lemonade out of lemons Turners and Growers have made the best of a bad situation, donating a truck-load of fresh fruit and vegetables to the Murchison community. The poor weather contributed to a crash just outside of Murchison last Monday evening which resulted in a truckload of fresh vegetables being written off. A team effort saw the produce transported to the Murchison school, by Fulton Hogan, who used some of the produce for a fund-raiser later this week and donated the rest to the community. Clean-up ordered in Hope The owners of a Hope property have been ordered to clean-up their land which is covered with more than 120 junked cars. The Environment Court has agreed with the Tasman District Council on an interim decision about whether storing a private collection of ‘vintage’ cars was compliant with council planning rules. The ruling followed complaints against Edward and Judith Ashton from the community about their “junkyard” storage.
Bright future for proposed new subdivisions in Richmond Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A large subdivision that will create a “whole new suburb of Richmond”, including a $100million retirement village, is just one of the proposals that Tasman district councillors will consider when they receive the first wave of applications for Special Housing Areas on Thursday. Council re-signed the Tasman District Housing Accord last month and, under the agreement, will be obligated to issue consents for 800 sections and 1100 homes over the next three years. The Housing Accord gives council the ability to approve Special Housing Areas to speed up the consenting process so that new houses can be fast-tracked on to the market. Council didn’t receive any applications for Special Housing Areas in the first
two years of the accord but that’s about to change when it considers 10 applications at Thursday’s full council meeting in Richmond. Included in the applications is a proposal by Richmond West Development Company to develop a 50 hectare block of land adjacent to McShane Rd into a large residential subdivision with over 600 sections and a retirement village. Richmond businessmen Andrew Spittal, Gary Donaldson, Simon Collett and Graham Vercoe own the land and already have a conditional agreement with retirement home company Arvida to acquire 8.2 hectares of land. Arvida chief executive Bill McDonald would not comment on the proposal until the SHA had been lodged with council. However, he stated in a report to the New Zealand Stock Market that the “site provides for a $100 million
retirement village and integrated care development”. Arvida already owns Oakwoods in Richmond and The Wood in Nelson. Andrew says their subdivision would eventually have 660 homes centred around community amenities including parks, walkways and shopping centres. It would include a wide diversity of houses with many constructed on “affordable sections”. “We want to put together a total concept design using the best principles we have seen in New Zealand and Australia, and we want to take our time to get it right,” Andrew says. “We have built a lot of houses and subdivisions around Nelson and Tasman and we know what works and what doesn’t work. “We’ll be taking the very best of what we have learned and bring it together to deliver a quality build with lots of diversity.
“This is our community, we live here and our parents, children and grandchildren live here, so we want to deliver something we will be proud of.” Although council staff are concerned that the land has a deferred zoning for mixed business and light industrial, Andrew says it’s surrounded by residential or deferred residential land and “it’s a natural progression to rezone it for residential and develop it for housing.” He also says Tasman desperately “needs land for houses, as there is an imbalance of business or industrial land already zoned”. Council will also consider applications for Special Housing Areas for 250 sections near Lower Queen St, 30 sections in Angelus Ave, 32 sections in Highland Dr, 40 sections in Whitby Rd Wakefield, six sections in Arbor Lea Ave, 14 on Hill St, 70 in Pohara, 45 in Marahau and 40 on Main Rd Hope.

Calling new recruits Simon Bloomberg One of Nelson police’s newest recruits, Tom Adams, is encouraging anyone who has been thinking about joining the police to attend a recruiting evening at the Tahuna Beach Function Centre early next month. New Zealand police will be recruiting 880 new officers over the next four years and police around the country are holding information evenings to try and attract new trainees. Nelson police will be holding their recruiting evening on July 4 and Tom says it will be a great opportunity to find out about the range of career options available in the police. “It’s the most exciting job you can have,” Tom says. “Every day is different – there’s so much variety.” Tom, who joined the force after working as a roofer for five years in Perth and Christchurch, graduated from the Royal New Zealand Police College last August. “I’ve always wanted to join the police because they were the people who were keeping everyone safe. I always looked up to them and I wanted to be part of that.” Sergeant Craig Barker says the recruiting evening will be run by
senior recruiter Anna Murray, physical education officer Glen Robertson and senior sergeant Blair Hall. Nelson police officers working in response, prevention, investigation, search and rescue, dog handling and Armed Offenders will be discussing their roles and will be available for questions. “We’ll have 12 of our staff there to talk about their jobs,” Craig says. “There will be six tables and we’ll have an experienced officer and a new recruit at each table to give a different perspective on their jobs. “The police website has a lot of information about recruiting and joining the force but this will be a really good chance for people to come and talk face-to-face with our staff. People can come along and have a good chat and find out what our guys think about being a cop.” Craig says anyone who is 17 can start the application process but you need to be 18 to start police college. There is no upper age limit and no height requirements for recruits. The recruiting evening will be held July 4, at the Tahuna Beach Function Centre in the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park on Beach Rd, Tahunanui from 6pm to 8.30pm.

Kate Russell It’s a fine Sunday winters afternoon, and Tahunanui’s Back Beach is jam-packed with dogs and their owners – and for local woman Debbie Armatage, this what she loves best about living in the Nelson Tasman region. Now, Debbie, who is also the communications and partnerships manager at the Nelson Regional Development Agency, wants to find out what other people love about living here, in order for them to develop a ‘Regional Identity’. Debbie says the idea was mooted four years ago, but didn’t get off the ground until recently, due to the merger of Nelson Tasman Tourism and the Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency last July. “Basically, we want to promote the region to anyone wanting to live and work, visit, invest and study here – and to do this, we need to identify the region’s identity – without an identity, we don’t know what to promote,” she says. Over the last three months the agency has been meeting with local groups and individuals, asking them what makes Nelson such a special place to live. They are now in the “community engagement” phase and are asking locals to let them know what is special about the region. Debbie says they have already taken to the streets to get people’s thoughts, but are also asking people to join in online, via their website and social media channels. “We want to give people the chance to voice what they love about the region - it might be a favourite spot you love to unwind, it might be about the people or the local produce, those beautiful sunsets or that warm community feeling. Whatever it is, we want to know.” To have your say, you can fill out the feedback form at www.nel sonnz.com or share your favourite picture of the region using the hashtag #ILoveNelsonTasman on Instagram.

New plants for Pearl Creek a community effort Jessie Johnston Friends of Pearl Creek got stuck into a morning of planting on Saturday, ensuring the unique area in Appleby remains just that. Around 25 people took part in the day which saw 750 trees put in the ground including flax, manuka, kanuka and hebes, as well as some
podocarps, kahikatea and kowhai. As well as members of Forest and Bird, volunteers included students from Nelson College’s volunteer group and Christine Gabrielle from Mapua, who was enjoying her first group planting. “I like being outside and I like nature and I really appreciate that in New Zealand

people replant. It’s a community effort to replant and when I’m riding my bike or something and I see all these little things I’m like ‘wow’, because people plant hundreds and hundreds of them and I just think it’s good to be part of it, everybody should do it because everybody enjoys it.” Although Saturday’s planting was focused on Pearl Creek, Forest and Bird do have several different projects underway in a number of different areas. “This area is quite unique because Pearl Creek is a spring-fed creek that goes into the Waimea Estuary, so it’s pure water and it’s really good for the health of the estuary,” says Jo Kay, coordinator for the Friends of Pearl Creek. “There are several of these systems in the Waimea Plains, which is quite unique in New Zealand, in fact. It’s also an important habitat for the marsh crake, fern bird and we have white heron visit occasionally. The creek itself has the kokapu, whitebait and some long fin and short fin eel which are native, so by shading the stream we will keep it in good health for those creatures. I think it’s just really neat that it has been noticed as a special area and is being looked after.” The Pearl Creek project has been going for around 30 years and receives two plantings a year, in autumn and spring. They also have working bees every couple of months to maintain the area and control the weeds.

New fitness facility officially opened Jessie Johnston The Lioness Club of Nelson officially opened their latest project on Saturday morning, the Saxton Field Outdoor Fitness Station. Their involvement in creating the new community facility goes back to 2010 when the club was at a Lion’s convention, “then one of our ladies went over to the Gold Coast and she saw one of these apparatus, so she contacted Geoff Devine, from Devine Fitness Equipment, and from there he basically twisted our arms be- From left, Dr. Nick Smith, Jillian Jary, Peter Coubrough, Cameron Ford and Geoff Devine cut the ribbon at the official hind our backs and we put the ones in down at opening of the Saxton Field Outdoor Fitness Station. Photo: Jessie Johnston. Tahunanui beach,” says Lioness Club of Nelson president, Jillian Jary. In August last year, it was council that approached the group, asking if they would like to form a partnership to create another outdoor fitness station at the Saxton complex. Construction was arranged by Nelson City Council, while Geoff Devine sourced the equipment from Italy. Work on the project got started in December last year and was finished around a month ago for a total cost of $107,000, the LiTHE INNOVATORS OF COMFORT™ oness Club of Nelson contributing $25,000. “The ladies just love being involved in the community, they love talking to the community and they love helping the community and 100 per cent of our funds go back into the Nelson area,” says Jillian. “This is a level two connect with community’s legacy project. This year, Lions is celebrating 100 years of being in New Zealand so they’ve got all these different levels of projects that can be attained, one could be buying a bench seat whereas one like this connects with the community on an on-going basis.” ® During the official opening, the Lioness Club was joined by project managers Peter Coubrough and Cameron Ford, Dr. Nick Smith and Geoff Devine. The fitness station, which is located between Saxton Stadium and the hockey pitches, features eight pieces of equipment that work different parts of the body and people are welcome to use it whenever they wish. The Lioness Club of Nelson is always looking for new members, so if anyone is interested in joining president Jillian Jary can be contacted on 027 278 2743.

Just a thought... Question: What weighs about 1500g, is 85 percent water and resembles a rotten cauliflower? Answer: The human brain. This incredibly intricate and complex organ is made up of billions of neurons, each one as complex as a small computer. The brain contains blood vessels that stretch for 400 miles, it uses 20 per cent of the body energy and is able to memorise 86 million bits of information daily, yet for most of us it functions at only a tiny fraction of its capacity. Henry Ford stated, “Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably why so few engage in it.” The human mind and the brain must be trained, exercised and fed the right information to enable us to live fulfilling and fruitful lives. Much like a computer virus check, we also need to be able to filter out anything that will infect our thought processes. Our minds can become improperly programmed and very easily take on mindsets, attitudes, fears, hurts and negative thoughts that start to control us and influence

Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “community concierge” washing windows and greeting customers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood promotion. in the decision-making process.” Sanctuary trustee and spokesperson Derek Shaw says that while they acknowledge the public’s concern, they are left with “no other choice” and are trying to remain focused on the task at hand. “We would much rather not use the toxin, but there is no other way. If we want to bring back rare species, ground trapping and poisoning is not realistic. We could never achieve pest-free status without this,” he says. “We’re following best practice and when you’re looking in the toolbox of options there’s not many options left.” Derek also admits that the trust didn’t anticipate the backlash they have received. “We didn’t expect it, because for other fenced sanctuaries in New Zealand that have used brodifacoum, it wasn’t a major issue. We’re not sure why we’re striking more opposition,” he says. “We’re very busy so haven’t been too distracted, but we
are really trying to stay focused.” Derek adds that while they are taking into account the concerns much of the information regarding the drop has been “sensationalised.” “Of the 26 tonnes, most is cereal. There is 500 grams of brodifacoum in that, which is equivalent to a block of butter.” He says each green bait pellet is 16mm long and is designed to smell and taste appealing to rodents and not birds, being the active ingredient in household rat poison. “It’s extremely insoluble and does not get into the water itself. It binds to organic matter and solid sediments and is then slowly broken down by bacteria to inert and undetectable levels.” Derek says that exact dates of the drop will depend on the weather, but the community will be informed. “This is a legacy project for the sanctuary - but it’s for our future generations and we’re determined to make it successful.”

As the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary inches closer to their “milestone” pest removal operation, the opposition from the community is not letting up. But the Sanctuary says, despite the objection, they are determined to succeed in making their dream of being the largest pest-free sanctuary in the South Island, a reality. Over 50 people gathered at Millers Acre on Saturday to protest the drop of 26 tonnes of brodifacoum-laced bait in the sanctuary this winter. There will be three aerial applications of bait pellets spread by helicopter, spaced two-to-four weeks apart, between July and October. The public were notified last week that the sanctuary would close on July 2 to prepare for the drop. Although protesters were outraged by the drop, the walk up Trafalgar St to 1903 Square was not aggressive. Protest leader Christopher St Johanser says they won’t be backing down, and willbe drawing attention to the matter “in as many public forums as they are able to”. “We are acting with speed to ensure that this pollution does not occur, and we look for public support,” he says. “This is an abominable poison, far more toxic than the public has been led to believe. We believe they have no mandate from the publicthey have certainly set out to deny the public any voice

Without a doubt, volunteers are the glue that holds communities together and, thankfully for New Zealand, there are many in our towns and cities who give up their time every day to support local groups and organisations. In fact, around 1.2 million people volunteer in New Zealand on a regular basis, which is one of the highest rates in the world. This number reflects those people regularly undertaking a specific task within an organisation, but if less formal volunteering was included, in which people did a street collection or assisted in an event, the number would be sig-

It’s all about the rewards that people get from volunteering, it’s been shown that people who volunteer have better mental and physical health and many people get a lot of satisfaction from their volunteering.” Volunteer Nelson is also actively involved in promoting volunteering through their targeted programmes, including their youth programme which saw around 400 young people get involved in volunteering last year. “In our youth leaders programme, we take a core group of 20 young people and we train them to be volunteer leaders through a week of in-

National Volunteer Week began on Sunday, June 18, and will run until Saturday, June 24, celebrating the great work that volunteers do in our communities. To recognise the week and celebrate the fantastic contribution made by volunteers, Volunteer Nelson has called on member organisations to nominate their hard-working volunteers, who will then receive a gift voucher. So, would you consider working for nothing? Volunteers will tell you that you get so much out of it, that it connects you to your community and it helps you learn more about yourself. The Nelson Tasman region has always been proud of its vibrant hospitality scene and for good reason. We have bars, restaurants and cafes for all occasions, all tastes and all prices ranges, so to recognise our fantastic local hospitality industry it’s time once more for the Nelson Hospitality Awards. The biennial awards event has been running for a number of years in Nelson and is all about “celebrating hospitality in our area. These people work very hard all year round and it’s their opportunity to be recognised for all that work,” says Nelson Hospitality Awards committee member, Mishael Sowman. This year the awards will see a major change in how the nomination and voting processes are carried out, with everything going online. “I guess it makes it easier for us, it is a lot of work counting and collating all those entry forms from the newspaper and I guess it makes it more transparent, the fact that it’s all being collated up in Auckland, so there will be no local involvement in the collation of the votes,” says Mishael. Members of the public will be voting for people’s choice in a number of categories, with nominations opening on Monday, June 26. Once the nomina-

Push for plaques for war veterans Charles Anderson Journalist
charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz
The Returned Service Association is pushing for changes to the Veterans’ Support Act after the Waimea Weekly publicised the plight of Commonwealth veterans left in the lurch by the current legislation. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont met with Veterans’ Affairs last week in Wellington and presented Weekly articles about local war vets John Beeching and Grace Lane. John, a 93-year-old former Royal Air Force pilot, was due to miss out on a Government-funded memorial plaque when he dies. He was previously entitled to a subsidised military plaque but was denied one because the new law says it should work to benefit those who served explicitly at the direction of the New Zealand government. Commonwealth veterans, despite serving as part of the Allied cause in WW2, do not fit this description. However, after publicity, local Nelsonians stepped in to fund John’s
plaque. Grace Lane died two years ago at the age of 93, but also missed out on a plaque. Barry says he and the RSA “are on the case” following the announcement of a review of the law by Minister of Veterans’ Affairs, David Bennett. “We are putting in a remit to change the act,” Barry says. This would cover all Commonwealth veterans regardless of the field of combat they served in. The Act does not provide for those veterans who served under another Government to have a plaque paid for by the New Zealand Government. The law is currently under review, with the Government last week announcing Professor Ron Paterson, of the University of Auckland, to lead the project. Details of the submissions process are on the New Zealand Defence Force website www.nzdf.mil.nz/ corporate-documents/vsa. You can also make submissions on the review by emailing review.vsa@ nzdf.mil.nz.

From the presidents pen Thank you to all members who attended our Annual General Meeting. Congratulations to new first-time executive committee members Nola Oldham (continuing a family legacy) and Alastar Watson; along with Jason Marsh and Bev Hart who were re-elected. It was a pleasure to witness Life Membership accorded to six of our senior members - Bill Lewis Della Bosca Morgan, Myrtle Friend, Shirley Friend, Vivienne Moody, Rosalie Richardson and Anne Ryder, fitting recognition for their long and valued service. In my report to the AGM I said that while it had been a successful year, ours was a young administration and our best was yet to come. We have a leadership team that is prepared to give that little bit extra, that will be taking a proactive approach to club affairs and seeking to spearhead some exciting new developments. However, it is not going to be all work. Have you checked out the Sunday jazz in the club yet? Be sure to join us at the mid-winter Christmas Dinner with the Gypsy Pickers and let’s head back to the future together at the very special 46th Anniversary Cabaret in early August.

What a day for a run Andrew Board As Monaco Mid-winter Marathon organiser Stu Cottam eyed the top runners coming into the final line he checked his watch and thought 'I'd be around that'. The veteran runner has been the man behind the marathon since its inception four years ago. The latest edition on Sunday saw 70 people complete the full marathon, for almost 30 of those it was their first marathon. Another 200 took part in relays from 10km to half marathons. The run starts at the Honest Lawyer and heads to Rabbit Island before coming back to where it started, a whopping 42.2 kilometres for those who need reminding. Local runners Ben Clark and Kim Waddell won their respective races, and the "racey rabbit" winner’s trophies. Off-road distance specialist Ben prevailed overall in a time of 3 hours 3 minutes and 50 seconds. Accomplished triathlete Kim recorded a time of 3 hours 28 minutes and 14 seconds, with both winners recording a comfortable margin over second
place. Stu says a highlight was seeing 17 year old Nayland College student Alina Mothes, completing her first ever marathon while finishing as the thirdfastest woman. In the two person relay, the match up of school students Angus Wemyss and Sami Jordan eclipsed 3 hours, recording 2 hours and 53 minutes to finish second. Another highlight was seeing 65 year old Michael Stewart completing his 552nd marathon, in just 5 hours and 19 minutes. For Stu, he says it's a joy to see the smiles and grimaces on the faces and they trot past. "It's now a fixture on the running calendar and it's a pleasure to see all these people having a good time." But that pleasure has come at a cost for him, having never taken part in the event he created. "I was looking at the times and I thought I'd probably be up there with the front guy. I run about a 3 hour marathon and the winner came in around that." Asked if it gave him an itch to give the race a go, he conceded it did. "Maybe next year, I'll be there."
SportS Football It was goals galore at Guppy Park on Saturday as Richmond Athletic put eight past hosts FC Nelson. In the other Nelson Bays Football first division games Nelson College thrashed Nelson Suburbs 8-0 after running out a 7-0 half time lead, and Tahuna FC beat Motueka 5-0. Running Waimea College’s Bridie Edwards finished fifth in Saturday’s New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships in Christchurch. Bridie completed the 4km course around Ascot Golf Course in 14min 28sec. Waimea College’s Jacob Neal finished 25th in the year 9 boys’ 3km race in 10min 49sec. Swimming After 10 years in Christchurch, the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series has announced that its South Island swim event is relocating to Nelson, with the very first, ‘The Big Tahuna’, event scheduled for Saturday, March 31, next year. Attracting over 8000 swimmers nationwide each year the series includes multiple distance events for elite athletes, as well as adults and children.

Nelson Speedway No.1 Pete McNae It’s more than just a slogan painted on the officials’ tower, the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway really is New Zealand’s No 1 club-run speedway. Speedway New Zealand says so. The Nelson club delegation had extra baggage to bring home from the annual Midas Speedway New Zealand awards function in Wellington at the weekend, securing three trophies, while long-time Nelson club life member and national promotions committee representative Karen Carey was surprised to receive a Services to Speedway award for her long service on the national body. The Nelson club had finalists in a number of categories ranging from Stockcar Competitor of the Year (Keightley Teece), to Best Promotional Apparel, National Speedway Event of the Year, and the club-run track category, among others. The Promotional Apparel award for the midget champs T-shirt was recognition of the efforts of Nelson’s Kevin Freeman and Commentator of the Year AJ Batt, who used US contacts to source a design featuring old and new style midget race cars on a high quality t shirt. The fact they sold out quickly and have been sighted around the country is a testament to the shirt’s design. Waimea Print staff member Cam Mayne, who has taken a significant role in redesigning the Nelson programme and calendars, was honoured for the Best Promotional Poster for his War of the Wings sprintcar series promotion. Then Nelson’s name was called, ahead of Cromwell and Kihikihi, as the best club-run track in the country. Retiring club president Wayne Martin says he was surprised. “I didn’t know we were there with the rainouts and all that stuff this year, but talking to people since, it stacks up,” he says. “It’s been a long time between drinks, we almost got to the point of redoing the signwriting on the box because we haven’t actually won this award for a few years — but it’s one the whole team should be pretty proud to share.” While the midget meeting was the jewel in the crown, the Nelson association made other significant moves last summer. The club secured a new long-term backer in Milestone Homes, its website had a major makeover, adding much more fan-friendly content than before, potential promotional washouts were repackaged with the club choosing to support earthquake relief through the Waiau pool rebuild fund and the Racing for Kids Child Cancer Foundation meeting. “It’s that social atmosphere that brings people back,” Wayne says. “At the end of the night, we can walk across the pits, have a beer, spin some yarns and unwind in comfortable, modern clubrooms.” “Lots of other tracks can’t get drivers in the doors for a social drink. In Nelson, they are struggling to get them out. “I guess what I am most proud of with this award is that we keep checking ourselves, asking if we are delivering what fans and competitors want.”

Families, costumes, fake blood, and African drumming made for an entertaining combination at this year's 6 Hour Midwinter Breakout. The fun, annual mountain biking race gave 299 riders the chance to dress up, jump on their bikes and ride around Rabbit Island for six whole hours. "I've run seven events now and I would say that was the best one we've had, everybody had a good time and really enjoyed it,” says event organiser Wayne Pool, who spared some time and sneaked in a few cheeky rides. “We built some new trails and reversed last year's track and it worked really well.” The group of riders were made up of all ages and stages, with one competitor who was over 60 riding out to the event from Nelson, biking the whole race solo, and then biking home again. And the young ones participated too, with Nelson Intermediate awarded $500 to put towards sports equipment after having the highest number of teams entered from a single school. However, the biggest prize of the day went to the best-dressed Rainbow Warriors’ Katie Gold, Lynley Chisnall, Bin Heaphy, and Deb Hughes, who won a $500 Vic Brew Bar voucher for their yellow wigs, tinsel covered helmets, stripy capes, and shiny accesso-
ries. Wayne says the women were stand outs and really got into the idea of the Midwinter Breakout. “The day is all about fun so we don’t give out performance prizes, we give out a few thousand dollars worth of spot prizes and a prize for the best-dressed team, and these ladies really got into the spirit of things.” Also dressed up was Team Concussion who were covered in convincing fake blood and raffled off mountain biking gear to raise $735 for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter who get called out around the region to rescue injured mountain bikers. A new addition to the race this year were the In Rhythm African drummers who spurred along everyone when they hit the inevitable exhaustion near the end of the race. Another highlight of the day was when Henry Jaine rode the whole six hours solo and ahead of the pack. “He was winning the race on his own, right until the last lap when he was passed just before the finish by Team Skoda Racing, he managed to stay ahead of the fast four-person team until the last few minutes,” says Wayne. “To ride that on your own for six hours is really quite phenomenal.” In addition to being first among the solo men and second overall, Henry did the fastest lap, taking 14.45 minutes to do what the average person was riding in 25 minutes.

No job too big for Murchison students Judene Edgar Reporter

A “workmans” raffle where you can win a student for the day is just one of many fundraising schemes to raise money for seven Murchison students who have been selected to represent the ‘Top of the South Island’ area schools in the national area schools tournament in Whangarei, July 9 – 13. Until earlier this month the town had been fund-raising for five students, but a phone call from the ‘South of the South’ area schools has seen rugby players Matua Wilson and Issac LimpusWingate get a last-minute callup. “I was very shocked, a bit stunned but super stoked”, says Matua. Matua and Issac join Monique Perkins, football, Justin Perkins, rugby and football, Nathan Hawley, rugby and Ki-o-Rahi, Bradley Thomas-Brough, golf, and Ashlee Kyle, volleyball. The students need to raise around $900 each to attend the tournament. The students have gone through local and regional trials to get selected, and if successful at the national tournament, have the opportunity to be part of a national team. With only eight weeks to raise the required money they have hit the ground running, selling apples, stacking firewood, picking up stones and painting. A sausage sizzle was also held after the school’s cross country earlier this month and Fulton
Murchison Area School students, from left, Issac Limpus-Wingate, Ashlee Kyle, Nathan Hawley, Bradley Thomas-Brough and Matua Wilson are getting ready to represent the Top of the South Island at the national area schools tournament in Whangarei next month. Hogan are donating the proceeds from a staff BBQ. Nathan, who went to the national tournament last year, says that he feels “pretty privileged that everyone is helping out; it’s a great way to bring the community together”. The rugby-mad town is holding a Lions versus All Blacks themed

Waimea College 9A Netball Waimea College’s 9A netball team is excited to be competing in the Junior South Island Secondary Schools (SISS) tournament, in Christchurch, from July 9 to July 13 this year. The junior SISS tournament for years nine and ten has been held in Christchurch for the past 19 years and is a great opportunity for players, coaches and umpires looking to develop their skills and take part in a tournament that showcases some great competition on the court. Waimea College 9A coach Kirsty Thompson has been working with the majority of the team since they were year seven at Waimea Intermediate. Others came under her coaching leadership in year eight, making them a team that shares at least two years’ experience together on the court. “That’s definitely made a difference in their on-court performance,” says Kirsty. “I’ve had a lot of comments from numerous

“I’m also very big on not having their success go to their heads. Last year they did very well, they were the only intermediate team that I know of that have played in the collegiate grade. They had that pressure on them to do well and then they won it, but you wouldn’t have thought that

I am really excited for this tournament,” says Kirsty. The team, their families and management, would like to thank all of their generous sponsors for their support.

Outstanding Community Service Awards
Banded Rail planting dates
There are a host of people throughout our District who work quietly away without pay and with precious little recognition to make our communities better places to live. These awards aim to give some well-deserved recognition to these unsung heroes of our communities. It gives us an opportunity to make sure they are rewarded with the thanks they deserve for the long-term outstanding service they have given over the years.
Please come and join us at a community planting day from 9.00 am – 1.00 pm on the Waimea Inlet: • Maisey Embayment: Sunday 25 June. Cnr Coastal Highway/Westdale Road. Turn in at ‘Fable Cottage’ sign.
Head to www.tasman.govt.nz/link/ocs-awards for more information and nomination forms.
Information sessions for online building consent applications Nelson City and Tasman District Councils have been working together for some time to provide an easy-to-use online building consent application process called GoShift. As well as providing a single process for companies who work with multiple councils, GoShift also automatically tailors itself to the application – meaning you only have to provide the information required for the project. Public information session: We will be offering public presentations to give you the opportunity to become more familiar with the GoShift portal prior to launch. Everyone is welcome to attend. • 27 June 2017 – GoShift presentation evening – Richmond Council Chambers from 4.00 pm In addition, people using the new service can: • View records and previous applications • Copy applications for a similar project • Receive automatic notifications if more information is required. After testing, we will open up the service to all our building consent applicants on 1 July 2017. About GoShift: GoShift is a shared undertaking by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and a group of 20 councils around New Zealand, with the aim of making applying for building consents easier, quicker, and more consistent from council to council. You can read more about it at www.goshift.co.nz.
Makers, rummagers and bargain-hunters: Second-Hand Sunday is 9 July Four times a year the region works together to help rehome household goods – anything from chairs, books and clothing to left over-bits and pieces from building projects. It’s called Second-Hand Sunday – and everything is free. The goal is to reduce what goes to landfill by giving people a simple, easy way to recycle, re-use or re-home items by putting them at their the gate.
• Dominion Embayment: Saturday 8 July. Parking at 43 Apple Valley Rd (between Bronte Rd & Mapua Dr). • Stringer Creek: Sunday 23 July. Use Good Wood for winter burning Look for the Good Wood tick when you stock up on winter firewood to be sure of dry firewood that will burn cleanly. Suppliers in the Good Wood scheme can be trusted to provide either: • Seasoned firewood, suitable for immediate use during the winter months, or • Green (unseasoned) firewood delivered far enough in advance, that if properly stored by the user, it will be ready to burn in winter. Remember, green wood will not burn efficiently, leaving you with a cold house and smoky fire. A Good Wood supplier will have a moisture meter to measure the moisture content of wood if you wish to confirm that wood being delivered is dry enough to use. Find a Good Wood supplier: Head to www.tasman.govt.nz/link/goodwood.

Thompson Graeme Dallard
In loving memory of Graeme Dallard Thompson who passed away peacefully with family around him on 20th June 2017 14 days before his 87th birthday. Dearly loved husband of Gwen, adored father of Leigh and Kay. Much loved Grandad of Hayden and his wife Francine and a great grandad (pop) to Vinnie, Louella and Carlos. Valued friend of Ron Cox. Many thanks to all the staff at Ernest Rutherford for the special care they gave him over the past years. A private gathering will be held as per his wishes.
