Recreation not forestry for Rabbit Is Simon Bloomberg

Walkers, conservationists, horse riders and mountainbikers are delighted that the Tasman District Council looks set to give the recreational and ecological values of Moturoa-Rabbit Island precedence over the council’s commercial forestry operations on the island.

A draft plan for managing the popular reserve west of Richmond was formulated by the council and put out for public consultation in May. A number of recommendations in the draft plan, including closing off some walking and cycling trails because of a conflict with commercial forestry operations, have been rejected or modified by

council’s hearing panel, after submissions made it clear that the island’s recreational values were a priority. Instead of closing off trails, the panel recommended that the existing network of cycling and walking trails through the forested areas on the western half of Rabbit Island should be expanded. The panel, made up of

four councillors and two iwi representatives, also rejected a proposal to distribute bio-solids on the neighbouring Rough Island that could limit public access to areas of the island. “We are delighted that the voice of the community has been listened to,” Sport Tasman chief executive Nigel Muir says. “Rabbit Island is such a treasured asset

and this is really a significant step in the development of Rabbit Island for future generations. “Council should be applauded for listening to the voice of the community because it was a very strong voice. It is a really good result for the whole community.” The panel also expanded plans

Students race for young refugees Simon Bloomberg Waimea Intermediate pupils have been racing against time to raise awareness about a global refugee crisis that is forcing 42,500 people, including more than 20,000 children to flee their homes every day. About 500 of the school’s students took part in the Race for Survival which is an annual event organised by Save the Children to raise awareness about the child refugee problem. The students spent their lunch times last week carrying a crisis suitcase “as far as we can by as many people in our school as possible” as part of the awareness campaign. Teacher Roseanne Oughton says the students carried the crisis suitcase to symbolise the plight of refugee children who have to pack up and flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. She says the number of children and families on the move is

to revegetate coastal margins with native plant species which secretary of the Nelson-Tasman branch of Forest and Bird, Gillian Pollock says is “good news”. The draft plan’s proposal to progressively restore some of the coastal margins of the islands with native plant species has now been super-sized to planting a 20m wide riparian buffer of native vegetation around the coast line of Rabbit, Rough and Bird islands. Gillian says there are some important wetlands surrounding the islands and the riparian planting will help improve that habitat for native bird species. She says her only reservation is that plans to upgrade the island’s two boat ramps could result in increased traffic and impact on birdlife in those areas.

We’ve also provided supporting educational material so the students have learned about the child refugee problem.” Roseanne says their initial goal was to carry the suitcase in a relay for 42km over four days, to represent the 42,500 people who become refugees every day. However, they achieved that target last Wednesday so continued on Thursday to turn the 42km Race for Survival marathon distance into “a 58.3km ultra-marathon”.

The Barrington Gum towers above surrounding pine trees in Kingsland Forest. Photo: Brad Cadwallader. “It would be a great track because the Barrington Gum is really impressive and some of those natives are in excess of 500 years old. But, at the moment, we can’t do anything because the forestry company that manages the council’s forest are not allowing any track building on the hill because of health and safety review.” Although Greg accepts that health and safety is paramount, he believes the process is taking too long. He says council should be following the exam-

Keep Richmond Beautiful is frustrated that red tape is holding up a proposal to develop a walkway and viewing area to help make a towering tree in Kingsland Forest near Richmond a destination for walkers and tourists. The giant mountain ash growing behind Easby Park, known as the Barrington Gum, was officially measured at 72.1 metres in 2009 making it the second-tallest measured tree in New Zealand. Earlier this year, Keep Richmond Beautiful submitted a proposal to the Tasman District Council to create a walkway to the tree to make it a tourist attraction. Keep Richmond Beautiful’s Greg Pickford says they have already planted a lot of native trees in the area and “as soon as we get the okay we want to put a track up there to the tree”. Greg says they have proposed to build a track that provides access to a stand of “very large” native trees and then comes back via the Barrington Gum. “We want to run a track from Reservoir Creek to some very large totara and kahikatea and then bring it back via the Barrington Gum so you have a loop track.

ple set by landowners and volunteers in Silvan Forest where a new mountainbike park has been developed in under two years. “The track up to the big tree only needs a little bit of work. I’m sure it will happen eventually it’s just the council are moving really slowly. “If you look at what has happened in Silvan Forest, it shows you what can be done in the rest of the Richmond Hills. Those tracks were all done by a private landowner and volunteers in a commercial forest so why can’t council do that?” Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne is enthusiastic about Keep Richmond Beautiful’s proposal but concedes the health and safety review needs to be completed before any plans for a track could be approved. However, Richard says he will talking to council’s commercial staff about the proposal and “be doing his best” to speed up the process. “I think it’s a good idea,” Richard says. “It’s a beautiful tree - it’s an absolute feature that everyone should enjoy so I’ll be doing my best to champion the idea.” The tree is thought to be about 160 years old and has a diameter of 2.35m.

Columns at Trafalgar Centre expose damage Andrew Board Shocking photographs taken by construction workers at Nelson’s largest civic building show massive cracks in columns that are attached to the arches that hold up the roof of the Trafalgar Centre. In December 2013, Nelson City Council voted to close the centre after it was deemed to be a risk to life in the event of a major earthquake. The decision upset many in the community, with its closure causing major problems to event organisers. Last year a plan was agreed to upgrade the centre with strengthening work and a new northern end. Work started late last year and the centre has been open sporadically since April. But what wasn’t known at the time the centre was closed was just how bad the hidden structural columns were. Photos passed to Waimea Weekly show the reinforcing of one column exposed and another with a huge crack through it. The columns are on the western side of the main hall. A source familiar with the project

told the Weekly that the damage was likely to have occurred in an earthquake but they couldn’t be sure. “The columns are connected directly to the main arches of the main building. The indication from the cracked columns is that the building has moved in an earthquake and it has ripped the top of those columns off.” Work was stopped in the area when the damage to the columns were discovered and engineers had to weld on steel plates to the existing structure. Mayor Rachel Reese says the photos show that the council made the right call when it decided to strengthen it. “These photos demonstrate why we closed it. That building needed work on it and it needed serious work. The building is now in great shape in terms of its strength. It could not be left how it was.” She says she wasn’t shocked by the photos “because it matched with the advice that we had”. The source says to see the reinforcing exposed was worrying. “It would have taken a significant force to crack the column to that degree. The structure was put under significant stress,” he says.

NEW TUG: Port Nelson’s new tug boat Tōia arrived in Nelson just before 8am on Monday. The tug was built in China with work on it starting last October. Port Nelson Harbourmaster Dave Duncan says planning for the tug has been years in the making. “The ships coming in and out of the port are just getting bigger so we needed to upgrade. We’re very excited.” There will be a naming ceremony in the next week or so.

Midwife cuts upset expecting mum Kate Russell An expectant Nelson mother is speaking out against a decision by the district health board to disestablish the jobs of three of its senior midwives. Kim Meyer is due with her first child this weekend and is under the care of one of these midwives, who she regards as “amazing”. She received a letter from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board last week, which states

that as part of a recent midwifery service review, the case-loading midwives team will be disestablished from 30 September, 2016. Kim says that although these midwives will continue to be employed by the hospital as part of the core midwifery team, it will be a huge blow to many Nelson mothers, as well for the midwives themselves. Kim, who as a family lawyer has seen various at-risk clients use and benefit from the service, says

the effect it will have on expectant mums is “huge”. “A lot of the women who go through the hospital team are high risk in some way, whether it be due to pregnancy complications or social factors, such as mental health, addiction, domestic violence, or age – so for already very busy, private midwives who can also pick and choose clients, it puts these high risk women in a difficult position,” she says. “On average, each of these three

midwives takes on five to six clients each month – that is at least 120 women per year who will be left to find private midwives.” Kim says she is aware from friends that it is already difficult to find a midwife in Nelson at times, with people often not being able to get the first, second, or sometimes even third choices of private midwife. “Losing three more midwives is going to make this even worse,” she says. A spokesperson from the NM-

DHB says they will continue to support all women to have access to lead maternity care from a midwife. “Another priority for us is to work to ensure that women and families with high or complex needs can access the multidisciplinary supports that they may require. We have assured all of our midwives that we are committed to continue to support them within our workforce and that all of their skills and experience are highly valued.”

Just a thought... Merrick Mitchell, lay pastor, Richmond Catholic Church

Recently I spent two days in Wellington, with ministry formation, meetings and guidance. I find these opportunities to meet with colleagues very informative and draw upon their experiences and wisdom. Two things stuck with me from those two days. How are we attentive to God and hear and follow “the still quiet

voice of God”? (1 Kings 19:1113) Also, “what we experience in life is formative to our spirituality”. I see it like this. The people we have met and known, the situations we have been in, the places we have lived and visited, all form our awareness. They all have some influence on us and our thinking and behaviour. Humans are social creatures - we are not usually solitary by nature but enjoy the company and support of others.

We need to be around people, even if at times we might not feel like this! Jesus showed us by gathering a group around himself, teaching and living a communal life, being open to the goodness of God. Sometimes he would withdraw from his followers to spend more time in prayer, recognising a need for quietness, to discern God’s will and to keep himself balanced. So, we too follow the example of

Jesus and seek to balance our collective and individual selves. As Christians, we do this in community, not on our own. We need each other for encouragement and support, attending to God who calls us to “be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). No one is exempt from the struggles of life but we go on together, with our failings, knowing that we are not perfect and do not have the answer to everything. “We are not called to be successful but to be faithful” (Mother Teresa). “There are no successful churches. There are, instead, several

communities of sinners gathered before God in towns and villages all over the world. The Spirit gathers them and does her work in them. In these communities some sinners are called pastors and given designated responsibilities in the community. The pastors’ responsibilities are to keep the community attentive to God.” (adapted, thanks to Fr Mark Chamberlain). This responsibility is not just the pastors’ but every church member’s – to be attentive to “the still quiet voice of God”. Blessings during this time of Spring.

Dog saves the day St Arnaud children’s author Carolyn Hedom thinks her dog Carter is so special she wrote a book about him titled Carter and Friends. And last May, Carter proved just how special he is by waking-up Carolyn after a fire started in her house, saving her life. “I didn’t hear the smoke alarm going off but Carter did and he started running up and down the stairs and woke me up. There was a fire and a wall of smoke upstairs - I managed to put it out but the fire brigade said another three minutes and the whole house would have been in flames.” Carolyn and Carter will be promoting her book at Paper Plus in the Richmond Mall from 1pm on Wednesday September 28,

Sun shines through at Hope School Fair The sun shone through the clouds on Saturday at the Hope School Country Fair, breaking a four-year chain of dismal weather and drizzle. And true to form, the locals came in force, with around 1700 people turning up to support the school. “It’s a really good fair, there’s a wonderful turnout, the food is so good, especially the cake stall, we’ve been lucky with the weather and the whole thing has a nice, small country town feel to it which is perfect,” says Richmond mum Michelle McKenzie. Michelle was sitting on a hay bale with her daughter Katie who was about to pull out a tooth whilst eating a toffee apple, and that’s exactly what the Hope fair is about, family and some good old country fun. There was local food and produce galore, raffles, farm animals, live entertainment, second-hand sales, endless activities for the kids, plen-

ty of plants on offer and a silent auction which included a signed Valerie Adams shot put set, local art, a pallet of pavers and a weeklong Sunshine Coast trip for the family. Parent organiser Sarah Whittle says this was “a bumper year” for the Hope School Country Fair. “We’ve had four years of rain so this year we didn’t take any chances and set up all the massive tents but the sun has come out and everyone has turned up to enjoy it. “The fair is definitely bigger this year, there are more people, it’s a lot more spread out and there’s just a really good vibe, the whole school community has come together and played a part so we’re very grateful.” Sarah says the school raised around $37,000, which is a new record for the fair. Some of the money will be going to support children who need extra help in the classroom.

‘Lot’s of fun’ at the fair, Wednesday, September 7: The annual Appleby School fair was once again a school effort, with one class making and selling 100 litres of homemade lemonade to raise money for their school camp. The school raised $38,000 throughout the day which will go to various developments and may possibly pay for another teacher to keep class numbers down. However, organiser Laura Southward says the day is not all about the money. “It’s really become a community event so we decided to have a lot more free activities and food. It’s great that we’re able to raise money for the school but we wanted everyone to be able to get involved and that’s something that went really well this year.” Locals rally to help ex-school mate, Wednesday, August 24: Organisers of the quiz night for Katy Cobb, who is battling cancer, said the response was beyond belief. Over 200 people turned out to take part in the quiz at Hope Hall. The night also included a thank you message from Katy, who spoke on video to the crowd. Overall the night managed to raise over $18,000 for Katy, who is already in Germany receiving treatment. Katy has also raised $18,000AUD from her Go Fund Me page and family and friends are grateful to everyone who has contributed. Assistance dog to help boy, Wednesday, September 14: Within the last three days Blake and his family have received well over $500 in donations through their Give a Little site, helping them raise the necessary funds to get Blake an assistance dog. With their contribution to the dog being $20,000, the Costello family appreciates any donations the community can make to help them achieve this goal. They also hope to exceed the amount they require, so they can donate the rest to another family in need of an assistance dog. Those wanting to make a donation can visit the Costello’s Give a Little page at givealittle.co.nz/ fundraiser/anassistancezdogforblake.

Opinion

Your Voice Gondola response: I agree with your correspondent Dan McGuire’s letter, 14 Sept, that “Nelson ratepayers will be heavily impacted if the gondola continues to be funded from our money”. The funding is for a business case to develop a world-class tourist attraction on council-owned land, and if Nelson is successful in attracting investors the positive impact will be in the order of $50m per annum to Nelson businesses, the airport, accommodation and retail sector, meaning more employment, higher business values, and increased income to council. So if that’s heavy impact, great!! However, I disagree with Dan’s statement that “it cost Queenstown over $60m to get its gondola underway”. That gondola facility, including luge and restaurant, was funded over 40 years by private enterprise (Skyline Enterprises Ltd) who also own the Rotorua gondola. The Queenstown gondola is so successful (they had over 700,000 visitors last year) that they have announced a $60m upgrade, and are proposing a new one at Franz Josef. So to clarify - this isn’t “voodoo economics” - it’s a rational and well supported project that has received huge backing. I invite Mr McGuire to call me to answer any future questions about the project before he puts his pen to paper! I’m in the phone book. Jo Rainey, Chair Nelson Cycle Lift Society. Extra funds for Stoke Community Centre approved: We already have a community centre in Nelson. Why do we need two? That $350,000 could go toward funding [Victory] which was struggling to find money. Your priorities are drastically wrong. Roger Doran.

Home and Garden Show used to launch retail store Capturing the attention of home landscape gardeners was a challenge for Wholesale Landscapes’ new retail centre this spring, but the Nelson Home and Garden Show will provide the perfect “springboard” with the local business giving away $20,000 worth of gift cards during the show. Nelson’s Wholesale Landscapes, the largest manufacturer of landscaping supplies in the South Island, have opened a new retail centre, down the drive at 55 Saxton Rd. While tradies and resellers have been buying their bark and soils for years, team member Simone Dacombe said that “mum and dad” garden enthusiasts weren’t aware they could now go directly to the manufacturer. “The top landscapers come to us to buy supplies in bulk and drop off their greenwaste at the same time,” says Simone. “But I guess the home gardener, the mum and dad landscapers, don’t know they can now buy from the manufacturer in smaller loads, like a bag, a trailer or delivery.” Like 180 other exhibitors, Simone and her team found the perfect platform at the Nelson Home and Garden Show. More than 8000 patrons are expected

Focus - Fresh Approach - Community Involvement I am locally educated and have lived most of my life in Richmond. I have seen our district grow dramatically especially in the last ten to fifteen years. As a local business owner and Managing Director of MediMax Ambulance Services for 18 years I have developed an extensive working network throughout the district and have a strong sense of what the people of Tasman want from their Council.

Simone Dacombe, left, and Tom Filmer will be exhibiting Wholesale Landscapes’ new retail centre at the Nelson Home and Garden Show, from September 30 to October 2, at Saxton Stadium. to attend to find inspiration for their home landscapes, kitchens, bathrooms, gardens and more, with daily seminars, show-only specials and prize packages worth up to $6000. “The Home and Garden Show really is the perfect springboard for our new retail business,” says Simone. “Home owners can come and see our products up close, chat to us about their landscaping plans and get some ideas. “We’ve got a stack of $10 gift

cards to give away, so that’s like a free bag of compost for the first 2000 people who chat to us. We’ll also be running a competition where visitors can guess the number of PREMO Nuggets in a bowl to win a further $500 credit.” The Nelson Home and Garden Show runs for three days, from Friday September 30 to Sunday October 2, at Saxton Stadium. Doors will be open from 10am to 5pm each day.

• Core services must be prioritised. • Council spending must be reined in. We need to live within our means. • We must balance growth of our local industries with protecting our unique environment. In the 2016/17 Annual Plan, the current Council have approved a budget for the debt to rise to $166million of borrowing. The following year in Council’s Long Term Plan, including the dam project, debt will rise to a whopping $193million. This debt is out of control and will financially cripple all TDC ratepayers.

School speech contest finds best in Nelson Kira Carrington’s speech stood out from the rest at the Interschools' Speech Contest last week, winning the Year 8 competition. The Nelson Intermediate School student won the Year 8 section of the contest with her speech on “My Secret Life As”. Adam Teece from Richmond School won the Year 6 prize and Theo Parker from Nelson Christian Academy won the Year 7 competition.

School speech contest coordinator Linda Bergman says the standard was extremely high. “They all spoke with maturity, confidence and subtle humour, and they all show pride in representing their schools. "The focus is on the overall platform presence using the 4 Ps of public speaking, pitch, pace, pause, and projection, and how well the students are able to use pronunciation and enunciation along with the capturing of the audi-

Judges spokesman Adrian Humphries said he was highly impressed by the standard of speeches. The competition is organised by POWERtalk Waimea and Lions of Richmond and has been running for 30 years.

50 years of dairy farming Jessie Johnston

Redwood Valley dairy farmers Clare and Ted Ford are calling time on a career that has spanned 50 years. Their property on the Moutere Highway has been in Ted’s family since 1860, with the homestead on it built in 1883. Over the years, it has grown grain, hops and been used for market gardening. When Ted left school, the idea was to grow tobacco there, at the time it was the expanding crop that had everyone jumping on board. He went to Motueka to learn how to grow it and within the four years he was growing it. A decade later tobacco’s decline began. “So I looked around and the next best thing, from what I could see, was dairy so I started building up a dairy herd,” says Ted. Ted and Clare were married in 1973 and when they purchased the Ford family property, he had already started to convert it to a dairy farm, his first Jersey cow being registered in around 1968. “I went and saw my great-uncle Wally Dron, from the Beacon Hill stud in Hope, and had a yarn to him. He sold me a few cows and helped me pick a few more and we just built up from there,” says Ted. He also purchased three

or four cows from Clare’s parents who had a Jersey stud, well before they knew each other, as well as some animals from a stud in Golden Bay. Many of the animals purchased from these three studs became the founding stock for their pedigree herd. “Pedigree means you can follow their ancestry right back, although it doesn’t mean as much today as it did in years gone by,” says Ted. “You can do that with virtually all cows in New Zealand today because of the recording systems that have had to be put in place, but only pedigree herds go right back to the start of the Jersey herd book which was started in the early 1900s.” By the time Ted and Clare married, he had 25 cows, although at its peak, the herd numbered 180. Throughout their farming years, they have become more and more involved in the dairy industry. Ted judged at A and P shows, and locally and regionally for the dairy industry awards, as well as being involved for many years with the Agriculture ITO. “You get to see how other people farm and you learn a huge amount. Also, I could give back to the industry what I’ve got out of it.

Clare and Ted Ford have reached their 50th year in dairy farming and are now ready for retirement. Photo: Jessie Johnston. “I was also able to learn at the same time.” They have also encouraged their children and neighbours’ children to show calves at pet days and have hosted thousands of school kids, showing them how a farm is run. “It’s extremely important that people know where their milk comes from,” says Clare. “And even in a place the size of Richmond and Nelson, there are so many children today that have never touched a cow or an animal,” says Ted. To top off all the hard work that comes from running a dairy farm, Ted is also part of the Ap-

pleby Volunteer Rural Fire Force and has been serving with the force for over 25 years. Things have certainly changed in dairying in the last 50 years, “it’s a lot more mechanised nowadays and it’s a lot more intensive than it was when we started, that about sums it up,” says Ted. For example, making silage used to involve forking it all on the trailer and then forking it all off again, taking around three weeks to complete. Today, a contractor can make twice as much in around 10-12 hours. The product they made their money from was also different. With butter being the sale-

able item, the milk was separated and it was solely the cream that was sold, put out at the gate in a cream can to be collected, while the skim milk was fed to the pigs. “It’s the end of an era but we’re really quite satisfied,” says Clare. “We’ve done our part for the industry and district and the time was right, we’ve grown up with it all our lives, I guess, but we’re ready to hang it up.” Both agree that it’s a lifestyle that’s been incredibly good to them. “We’ve met heaps of people and made friends throughout New Zealand, we’ve got a lot to thank the Jersey cow for,” says Clare. “I don’t know that I would have been happy doing anything else,” says Ted. With the majority of their stock now in Ashburton, Ted and Clare say there is still plenty to do in retirement, including more time spent with family and at their bach at Lake Rotoiti. “All through my life, things that you plan always turn to custard. If you grab the opportunities that present themselves, they are the ones that are the most successful and the most rewarding. “I’m quite certain that something will come up that will give us reason to get out of bed each day,” says Ted.

Hope Walk raises awareness Election Issues

Jessie Johnston

People gathered at Tahunanui Sportsground on Sunday morning for the start of Nelson’s first Hope Walk. The event, which was established last year, aims to raise awareness of suicide and mental illness and break down the stigma attached to them. Lou Illes and Diane Hall organised Nelson’s Hope Walk, with both women having had experience with losing a loved one to suicide. Lou lost her father in May while Diane lost her husband in October 2014, “so this is something that we want to do to help make a difference,” says Lou. When Lou initiated Hope Walk in Nelson a few months ago, Diane contacted her through the Facebook page, asking to be part of the event. “It’s been fantastic, Diane’s obviously a little bit further down the journey so she’s been able to offer advice on what’s ahead,” says Lou. “We have to start breaking the

not talked about.” Lou, Diane and fellow Hope Walk participants made their way from the sportsground to Trafalgar Park via Rocks Rd. Once there, they listened to various speakers and through the sale of yellow ribbons on the day, will be donating any proceeds to Victim Support, who they say are a huge help to fami-

lies in the aftermath. “It’s not just about being sad, it’s also about giving people hope that you can go forward from here,” says Diane. With other Hope Walk’s taking place around the country, next year it is hoped that all events will be held on the same day. Lou and Diane also aim to get even more people involved in Nelson’s walk.

From the presidents pen Last week marked the end of Mike Carter’s tenure as Manager. I want to acknowledge the work Mike has done for the club, above and beyond the terms of his contract. We are so much the better for it - thank you Mike, you have really made a difference. Our new club manager, Lewis Della Bosca Wayne Williams, comes to us from a highly successful stint at Mangawhai Club, Northland. The recent planning meetings brought forward some important ideas to develop and consult with the members over. In today’s world the most efficient way of communicating with the bulk of the membership is by email, so please ensure the club has your correct email address and other contact details - we want to talk with you!

Fun-packed dance lessons

Top of the South Amateur DanceSport league wishes to extend a big thank you to all those, children, parents and all those not so young at heart who attended our enjoyable, active and fun-packed ‘free dance’ lessons day, held at Club Waimea in late July. Special thanks also goes to our qualified and talented dance teachers, Sally Gordon, of Sally Gordon Dance Studio, Phoebe Guthrie-Riordan of Motueka Dance and Pole Studio and Paul Mullany of Quickstep to Dance,

for their support in making the day a success. Later in the year we have two very special events planned. Jonny Williams of Dancing with the Stars and his partner Kristie Boyd will be visiting Nelson and Richmond to undertake two events. Jonny and Kristie will be providing us with an evening of entertainment as they fill the floor with a demonstration of several different styles of Ballroom dancing. All are welcome to attend. The next engagement for TOT-

SADL will be their tuition at a dancing workshop. Again all those interested in Ballroom, Latin American or New Vogue dancing are welcome to attend. Further information on both the above events, dates, times, venue etc. will be available in our November issue. In early December TOTSADL is pleased to welcome one of New Zealand’s top dance judges as we host medal test examinations for some 30 plus local dance students. Our best wishes goes to all those taking part on the day.

Sioux Line Dance section during their mid-year social, introducing beginners to the social dance floor.

Good for mind, body and soul Sioux Line Dance has started a new intake of beginner line dancers. This class is coming along nicely. If anyone would like to come along and join in, now is the time and new dancers are always welcome. We recently had our mid-year social, introducing our beginners to the fun of social dancing. We integrate the beginners by having what we call split floors, meaning the newer line dancers are at the front under the guidance of their tutor, Sue Wilson, while our more advanced dancers are at the back. This works well and keeps everyone up on

the floor and allows the new dancers to see what they will be aspiring to. Our day was topped off with dinner at Phil’s Place. This progressed on to a great night of entertainment and of course more dancing with the band Kruzin. In all it was a great night and many thanks to Club Waimea for such a great venue. Line dancing is certainly a great sport to become involved with. It’s good for mind, body and soul. Friendship, laughter and fun are three ingredients that help make learning easier along with good music too.

We have dancers heading away to Timaru this coming weekend to help Galaxy Line Dancers celebrate 22 years of line dancing. The weekend will include a workshop with Australian tutor, Chris Watson. And that’s not all - we then hit the road and continue down to Dunedin for the Masters Games Wind Down workshop and social weekend. The guest tutor will be Australian choreographer and teacher, Jan Wyllie. Jan was recently at Club Waimea running workshops for line dancing hosted by Sioux Line Dance.

Under the new Water Management Plan we will have half the water available that we have had in the past. Velodrome is more than meets the eye Jacob Page Saxton Velodrome trustees Paul Jennings and Rob Ford admit they looked for so long at the plans for the new complex they rarely come to check up on progress of its construction. Both men seemed happy with what they saw on Friday with the $1.6 million project still on track for a scheduled December finish. The project is a joint venture between Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and the Trust, with the Trust expected to contribute $300,000. “It’s looking really good,” Paul says. “I’m not up here often checking in progress as you look at the plans for so long trying to get the pro-

ject off the ground that you have an idea in your head already of what it must look like but to see it coming along well is exciting.” Rob says the key to the facility would be that the whole community will be able to use it for a wide range of things. “There’s going to be a rehabilitation area where people can rehab injuries, I’m sure speed skaters will use it and the ramp-way and underpass has been done with the consultation of the Halberg Foundation.” The Saxton Velodrome is essentially an upgrade and replacement for the cycle track at Trafalgar Park. While it won’t gain international exposure like the velodromes in Invercargill or Cambridge, it’s

“It is still on schedule but there are plenty of variables with a construction project like this,” Paul says. “The real icing on the cake will be when the surface actually goes down which is one of the last things that will happen. From there, it will be transformed from something that looks like dirt into something that’ll look great and something we hope the whole community will enjoy.” Paul says the Trafalgar Park track lasted 100 years and there is no reason the Saxton Velodrome couldn’t last the next century. The trust wished to thank the Tasman District Council, Nelson City Council, Rata Foundation, Lion Foundation and Mainland Foundation for their support.

NZ call up offers World Cup chance for local Jacob Page Daniel Hooper and Felix Murray have their sights set on the Under-22 Indoor Cricket World Cup in The United Arab Emirates next year. The pair have just returned from their maiden trip with the New Zealand Under-22, where they travelled to take on their Australian counterparts at Port Macquarie. While the Kiwi side lost all five games, Felix, a Nelson College pupil who is part of the New Zealand Under-19 team, says the quick nature of the 16-a-side game means momentum comes and goes quickly. The talented left arm orthodox spinner says you have to be a good player with bat, ball and in the field. “You have to contribute in all areas,” Felix says. “The pace of the game is a huge step up on outdoor and the fielding has to be a lot sharper. “That’s where the Australians had the edge on us. “We were competitive with the bat, but just weren’t as consistent. Both players have only been in the sport less than three years and Nelson Cricket’s community coordinator, Jon Routhan, who oversees indoor cricket in Nelson, says both Felix and Daniel have picked

Nelson Marlborough District Health Board

This year, locals will get the chance to cast their vote on who makes up the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. The board is responsible for a number of things, including the provision and funding of health services in the Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough regions. The board consists of 11 members, seven being those voted in by the public while the remaining four are appointed by the Minister of Health. This year 15 candidates have put themselves forward for consideration, so use this feature to learn more about them and make an informed decision this election. Former Waimea College pupil Daniel Hooper is wants to stay in the New Zealand Under-22 indoor cricket team for the World Cup next year. Photo: Jacob Page. up the game quickly. “We have four top grade teams here locally that play weekly during the season.” Daniel, a former Waimea College pupil and current Wakatu senior player, says forming a decent batting partnership is key during a four-over stint. He says his role is to be more of a power hitter who looks to increase the scoring and target the back net where more runs can be scored. “It’s important that everyone knows their roles. “For me, I know I have to be

aggressive at times and the key is to pick the right ball. For Felix, controlling the power hitters who target his spin is key. He says sometimes he can get a decent amount of turn off the carpet pitch. “It’s like outdoor, the more (revolutions) you put on the ball the more chance you have of it doing something.” Both players wanted to be part of the World Cup set up, however Felix understandably wanted to focus more on his outdoor career as he gets older and his skill-set improves.

KATE FULTON A direct descendent of Mary Mueller, mentor to Kate Sheppard, I have inherited a passion to advocate for positive change. Raising three infants, (now teenagers!), I completed a PhD in Biomedical Research at Cambridge University. My ancestry, academic training and two terms on NCC uniquely prepare me to represent you. Combining an evidence-based open-mindedness with empathy for your well-being and equity concerns, I will champion an inclusive DHB, that meets your needs. I recognise sincere community

group engagement as an essential part of decision-making. I advocate for a living wage and that greater consideration be given to all who work in healthcare. Investing wisely in preventative healthcare models improves noncommunicable disease outcomes. Such models best serve those in greatest need, their healthcare workers and their whanau. CHARLES TYRRELL After the health service saved my life in 2005, I would like to give something back to it and serving on the NMDHB would enable me to do this. As a former registered nurse, I now work for the Anglican Church caring for older people and enjoy offering my experience and abilities for the good of the citizens in our region. I am committed to our public health system and believe that while there is always room for improvement, we are fortunate to have such dedicated facilities in our community. I also have experience in governance, serving the community as chair of Age Concern Nelson Tasman and of the Nelson Tasman Positive Ageing Forum. I will work hard to represent all people were I to be elected.

I have been a successful and effective leader of our Council team in delivering:

TE WAI ORA STEPHEN LEE - Taxi drivers don’t live in Ivory Towers. I offer myself for election to the NMDHB believing I have four strengths: firstly, I bring a consumer’s eye. I have experienced the necessity of care and the professionalism and dedication of experts at work. Secondly, I appreciate taxpayer-funded health care for the whole community. It appeals to my sense of what is right. Thirdly, I have enjoyed a broad experience of life: children, marriage, mortgage, business, politics and international travel. And finally, I am in touch with my community. Every day I am confronted by our common needs and joys. No “ivory towers” for the taxi driver.

have an equitable spread of health services. Over 20% of our population is over 65 and health services must meet that growing need. In the past three years we have created a financially stable health organisation and are planning for expanded services, such as a new Nelson Hospital and further expansion of health hubs to provide accessible modern services. I have chaired Hospital Advisory Committee, Community and Public Health, former chair of Hospice Marlborough, member of Cawthron Institute Trust, past Mayor of Marlborough and currently Chief Executive Marlborough Research Centre. JENNY BLACK - I came to Nelson as a clinical Dietitian in 1982. Passionate about the health of our

community, I would appreciate your vote to continue this important role. In future we aim to provide more healthcare in the community so that hospitals are kept for people who really need expert care. We will make more use of technology - already telemedicine is making a difference in rural NZ. General Practice will become the healthcare home, providing a broad range of services closer to people’s homes. Important to this work is giving people information so they can stay well, look after their long term conditions and call on support closer to home. ALLAN PANTING - Despite an annual budget of approximately $400 million and 2000 staff, the DHB is unable to meet all the expectations of our community.

Consequently, we must ensure our available resources are used most effectively by supporting high quality medical care, based upon sound evidence. This can be helped significantly by promoting increased health information and education for our community, patients and health care workers. With extensive experience as a surgeon working within the DHB, and having held numerous local and national health leadership roles, I have gained a broad perspective of the provision of health services in New Zealand. I believe I can make a significant contribution as a member of the DHB. BILL DAHLBERG - I believe in the best possible health service and a positive investment in pre-

ventative care, focusing on the young and elderly who are our community's most vulnerable. My interest in serving NMDHB stems from chairing the Warmer Healthier Homes project which has retrofitted over 500 homes over two years. With a number of different groups involved it shows that working together achieves better results. Seven years spent as a director of the Rata Foundation gave me a solid understanding of community issues. As a Chartered Director with the Institute of Directors NZ and an Authorised Financial Advisor, I have the skills to communicate with our community, understand government regulations, work co-operatively and make quality decisions for better community outcomes.

Prices were more clinical and accurate early and raced out to a five goal advantage in as many minutes. That margin extended to 18-8 by the end of the first quarter. That margin had ballooned to a game-defining 15 goals by halftime. “I think we were nervous to start but once we got out there, we all felt really good,” Rayna says. The win went according to the

Prices were so stacked with talent that Rebecca Watene, who was named as the joint best player in the competition, with Jess Drummond, started on the bench. Rayna, who shot 35 from 43, and final MVP Mahi Law, 27 from 30, feasted on some slick passing into the attacking circle from centre Dana Wilson and wing attack Miranda Hart. “The service we got from the mid court was excellent,” Rayna says. “When we let the ball go, the speed of the passes gave us a real advantage. “Our through-court defence

was really good,” To Stoke’s credit they did not wave the white flag in the second half, despite the deficit. Goal keep Amber Granger was dynamic and had a good lean while Tess Eden was productive at centre. Stoke deserved credit for winning the final quarter 17-13 and not letting their standards drop. Rayna says being the team to beat did add a little pressure. “It’s been a long season, we started back in February so to go back-to-back is immensely satisfying even though we have had our challenges with injuries. “We’ve had the target on our back since game one and when you start really early in the year outcomes like this are very satisfying.”

Malone shines on world stage Jacob Page Sports Editor

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Liam Malone - the boy from Stoke has become the world’s best story from the Rio Paralympics. The 22-year-old has become a media darling over the past seven days and led the New Zealand team into the closing ceremony as flag bearer on Monday (NZ time). He won two gold medals in the T44 200m and 400m sprint, endeared himself to the world’s media with his down-to-earth, relatable Kiwi charm. He’s been interviewed by BBC and featured in the sports pages in some of the world’s top newspapers. Whether it was winning medals, breaking world records set by Oscar Pistorious or eating 100 chicken nuggets in a post-competition meal, it seems people cannot get enough of the sprinting sensation. Back in Nelson, his former high school Nayland College has revelled in his success, while Nelson mayoral candidate Pete Rainey has suggested Liam deserves a

It is quite a long way from the teenager who “wore out seven or eight pairs of artificial legs just from running around at lunch

times playing touch rugby”, his former P.E teacher Dennis Kale says. Liam’s old secondary school is in the early stages of trying to get him back for an assembly in cele-

bration of his achievements but a time and date is yet to be worked out with Liam’s schedule. Dennis, who is also a high performance athletics coach and has tracked Liam’s three-year pro-

gress in sprinting, says the outgoing, charismatic boy from Stoke was always one to give things a go. “Liam was always willing to give anything a go and in some ways he was quite difficult to teach because he didn’t see his limitations as something that had to be considered... It was admirable. “He’d come over to you after lunch and be stumbling around because he’d damaged his legs playing like anyone else would. “I’m sure he wore out seven or eight pairs of artificial legs just from running around at lunch times playing touch rugby.” Dennis says his exploits have been the talk of the school. “I think the overriding sentiment from staff who knew Liam when he was at Nayland is a sense of pride and satisfaction in seeing what a wonderfully humble, compassionate and well-balanced young man he has matured into. “Many young people faced with the adversities Liam has faced would’ve gone through life looking for excuses whereas Liam has accepted challenges. “He has never asked for, or expected, leniency or favour.”

Nelson mountainbike rider Henry Jaine’s European exploits did not go to plan, much like the start of the Nelson Mountain Bike Club’s Tim Miller Plumbing Spring Series event at Rabbit Island on Sunday. Henry won the event but had to start at the back of the field after having issues clipping into his pedals. He spent the first lap weaving his way through the field before finding the lead and never looking back. It was a bright spot after what had been a tough trip to Switzerland, which promised so much and delivered little due to injury. “I’ve only been back riding

in some European crosscountry races. The 19-year-old former Waimea College student decided to stay overseas after his injury and followed friend George Bennett in the Tour de France. “I got to catch up with George a couple of times which was awesome and the Tour itself is great to be part of live.” Henry says he will look to do all six rounds of the Spring Series but is targeting the Whaka 100 race in Rotorua over Labour Weekend. “I prefer the longer races and 100km certainly is that but this series is a good for a way to get back into things.” The second round of the series will be on October 9 at Codgers.

SEA SWIM: Forty foolhardy swimmers braved chilly temperatures when they participated in the Blue September Sea Swim in Port Nelson on Sunday. But it was all for a good cause with the swimmers raising $1500 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. The swimmers completed a 600m course symbolising the 600 men who die of prostate cancer each year. Hayden Squance was the fastest male while Kerry Mathieson was the first female to finish. Pictured are, from left, Jon Linyard, Angus Perham, and Sandra McGregor, lining up at the start. Jody Scott Moving into adult class racing will be an eye opener for 16-year-old Josh Nell this Nelson Speedway season. Josh has made the decision to move into the street stock class at the start of the racing season rather than seeing out his remaining time in the ministock, He was still eligible to carry on competing until his 17th birthday but having achieved most of his goals, it was easier to concentrate on one car rather than make the switch midseason. Josh had many successes last season, picking up the Nelson Club Championship, winning Youth King of the Coast and

finishing third at the New Zealand Youth Ministock title at Oxford Speedway. The move into street stocks was a logical pathway into open class racing with many of the top drivers making their entry this way before going on to win national titles in the top classes like super stocks, super saloons and sprint cars. Josh plans on running the street stock for the next two seasons; he will jointly race with car owner Graeme Kitto before deciding on his next step. He will be going through the mentor programme at Nelson practices and getting three meetings in so he can qualify for the South Island title in

Blenheim on November 26. The car has a lot more horse power but is heavier, plus he will have to factor in that there is contact allowed, something he has been taught to avoid in the youth class. Josh aims to eventually get into the heavy-hitter class stock cars if necessary. But ultimately it’s super stocks that he wants to end up in. It’s a way off, knowing he will have to fund it himself, but he has been working at Donaldson Civil since he was 12. Now, in his penultimate year at high school, his ambition is to get an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering and eventually look at working on high tech race engines like super stocks or V8 Supercars.

Put a little class in your life Whether it’s a weekly night class or a weekend workshop, Waimea College Adult & Community Education has something for you. As well as the usual favourites there are several new courses being offered. Computing and Technology tutor Laura McIntyre will teach you the basics of Microsoft Excel. Learn how to set up a spread sheet for use as a data base and for numerical calculation. Well known local, Roseanne Armstrong returns to teach Floral Design with a “festive flair”. Be ready for Christmas after this December workshop where you will create a beautiful table design to wow guests and a wreath for your door to welcome them. Public Speaking can be conquered with a little help from Jon Harrison where you will become an effective public speaker in the Public Speaking course. Likewise, Successful Gardening can be mastered with the expertise giv-

en by tutor Bill Brett. This practical course will provide you with information to improve your soil, grow, and treat your plants. Experienced acoustic guitar tutor, Arrion Love has now joined the team to teach complete guitar beginners as well as those wanting to further develop their playing skills. In addition, three levels of Ukulele are also available by Jan Gillanders. Tutor Linda Lee expands her passion for teaching cooking by now offering you traditional Thai cuisine. Enjoy this culinary experience of rich colours, unique flavours and aromas. If weight loss and healthy cooking is of prime importance to you, check out the new cooking course taught by Shana Copland. Simon Bloomberg Waimea College will be heading back to Great Barrier Island in December to defend its national Get2Go Challenge title after winning the Tasman regional final in Nelson on Monday. Ten teams and 80 students from 10 schools competed in the regional finals of Get2Go which featured mixed teams of eight year 9 and 10 students competing in a series of outdoor challenges. The regional final started with a mountainbike relay race at the A & P Showgrounds before teams ran and biked along the cycleway to Saxton Field where they completed a problem-solving challenge and rogaine around Stoke and Richmond. Waimea 1 established a one point lead over the top Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls combined team in the mountainbiking before securing the title with a comprehensive win in the rogaine. Waimea finished with 292 points with Nelson 1 second on 264 and Garin third on 255 - Waimea 2 was seventh on 214 points. Although Waimea was recording its eighth successive win in the Tasman regional finals, teacher Jane Orbell says this year’s final was closer than previous years. Jane says there were more teams and the competition was tight until the rogaine when Waimea scored 250 points, 60 more than Garin and 80 more than Nelson 1. “It’s great to see more schools com-
