Building boom gets bigger Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Home building companies are only just keeping up with demand after a 26 per cent increase in building consents for new dwellings in the Tasman district last year and one company predicts 2018 will be even bigger and “blow 2016 out of the water”. The latest Tasman District Coun-
cil figures show that 394 building consents were issued for new dwellings last year, up from 290 in 2015 and 274 in 2014. And the boom looks set to continue with council being inundated with applications for resource consents for new subdivisions around the district. Last month, council granted resource consents for a new 63-lot residential subdivision between Pitfure Rd and Edward St in
Wakefield while consents for another 130 lots in Richmond West and a 135-lot sub-division on the Moutere Highway are now being processed. That follows the approval of the 130-lot Hart Rise sub-division on the corner of Paton Rd and Hart Rd in November and approval for another 60 lots in Richmond West - 50 lots in the Hart Rise subdivision had pre-sold within 24-hours of their release in Sep-
tember. Council environment and planning manager Dennis Bush-King says the demand for sub-divisions and new houses has “certainly exceeded” their projections and staff have been “under the pump” trying to process all the consents. Council received 47 applications for sub-division resource consents in the six months to December 2016 compared to 58 in the previous 12 months.
Milestone Homes Nelson Bays regional manager Adam Hills says 2016 was their biggest year with an 80 per cent increase in the number of homes constructed. “We went from 25 homes in 2015 to 40 last year,” Adam says. “We’ll build around the mid-30s this year, so it’s going to be a little quieter but, looking at all the

Big increase new homes in Tasman FROM PAGE 1 subdivisions coming on line, I expect 2018 to blow 2016 out of the water.” David Orange of Orange Residential Homes they are still busy with “20 homes on the go at the moment”. He says they will complete around 35 to 42 homes this year, mostly in the Tasman district. “There’s plenty to go on with. The commercial sector is busy too so there’s only just enough builders and tradies to go around. “The biggest problem for us, and everyone, is finding enough land. Every-

Dave 'sets sail' for a mate Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Nelson's Dave Puklowski reckons Russell Blowers is "the nicest guy you'd ever meet", so he decided he'd do something special to help out his mate who suffers from a rare and painful form of rickets. But sausage sizzles and quiz nights were the last thing on Dave's mind as he planned a fund-raiser to help pay for his friend's latest surgeries. Instead, Dave came up with Challenge for Mate which will be launched from Nelson on April 1, when he attempts to become the first person to circumnavigate the South Island solo in a small powered boat. And after a year of planning, Challenge for Mate became a step closer on Monday when Dave launched the especially-modified 3.9m long Terminator NZ inflatable for a run from Nelson to Picton. The 157km journey was an ideal test run for Dave and his boat for the 2750km circumnavigation of the South Island which will take up to 30 days.
Dave Puklowski heads off on a test run to Picton as he counts down to his circumnavigation of the South Island. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. "Russell is the type of guy everyone becomes mates with," Dave says. "Even though he suffers so badly every day, he's always happy and will do anything for you - he's a great mate.
What are your priorities for Tasman’s future? We’ve been doing some great work over the past year – come and hear what we are doing this coming year and help us plan for the next ten.

"That's why I wanted to do something for him. And since I've always loved the sea and always had boats, I came up with this idea. We had our honeymoon on a boat and now our family has
three boats. As long as I'm on the water, I'm happy." Dave says the biggest challenges for the epic circumnavigation will be the weather. If all goes well, he is hoping to complete the jour-
ney in 19 days but has allowed 30 days as a contingency. "I'm hoping to meet my support team most nights to refuel and get supplies. There's only a few places around Fiordland that they can't get to, but if the weather's bad and things go wrong, and they always do, I may have to stop in one place for a couple of days, so I'll have to be prepared." Dave says he is leaving nothing to chance and will be carrying extra fuel, food and water as well all the latest safety equipment, including satellite communications. The boat also has fold-down wheels on the transom so that Dave can drag it to a safe place onshore for overnights stays. Dave says Challenge for Mate has received great support from Terminator Boats and Parsun Outboards and a number of Nelson companies, including NPD, Ansco Engineering, Bright Sparks Electrical, Brazen Composites, DroneMate, Century Batteries, Lowrance Marine Electronics, Fluid Electronics, Summit Real Estate, Sport Nelson Tasman Trust, Bowater Toyota and Placemakers.
Nelson Airport reports record start to the year Nelson Airport experienced its biggest ever month in January, and their $32 million development is now in full swing. Passenger numbers reached a record 93,563 in January, followed by 84,733 passengers in February. The 12-month numbers ending February were 975,391. These numbers, combined with increasing passenger capacity, record revenues and earnings before interest, have created the airport’s best six months performance ever with the full year forecast reflecting the same growth. ahead rapidly with the first stages of the terminal redevelopment. Phase one of the project, which includes the redirection all of the services, such as power and water, from their current location in preparation for the new build, is due to be completed this week. Work on the new control tower building has also started. The tender for phase two, the terminal redevelopment itself, is now being evaluated and is expected to commence in late
April. The overall project is expected to last approximately 20 months. Nelson Airport chief executive officer Rob Evans says minimising disruption to travellers and ensuring a safe environment is of paramount importance throughout the terminal rebuild project. “There will inevitably be some disruption to our customers,” Rob says. “But we are doing everything in our power to minimise that. Rob says they are also asking all airport users to add an additional 15 minutes to their travel time to make allowances for the disruptions.

Friendly competition the heart of trolley derby
Mia Kinzett, centre, heads down Collingwood St in Da Flash during the Mike Pero Trolley Derby on Saturday. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
Jessie Johnston Once again the Mike Pero Trolley Derby showcased some interesting trolley designs and plenty of friendly rivalry as drivers took to the slopes on Collingwood St. Although not quite reaching last year’s record of 92 trolleys, organiser Tim Bayley says this year still had a great turn out with around 70 trolleys entered. Racing featured several sections including the Zoomers, Sprinters, Rockets, Ewing Poultry F1 Corporates, Nippers and the Classic Class, although the big race of the day was the Monarch of the Hill which was taken out by Tim Bayley in Redrack iLean with 70.7km. Nelson MP Nick Smith and Green Party candidate Matt Lawrey also went head to head with Matt managing to take the win in the Green Machine. For Mia Kinzett, Saturday’s competition was her fourth-time racing. “I think we came to watch and dad thought it would be a great opportunity for me to get in and do it when I was three, so I went in the Nippers section,” says Mia. “I enjoy racing and seeing what different creations are brought on the day and it’s just really fun competing.” Mia’s first trolley had a Strawberry Shortcake theme, followed by the Chopped Chicken, last year was the First of the Fourth, and on Saturday she piloted Da Flash. The creation of her trolley has been a family project, her grandfather building the original for last year’s derby. “My dad, grandfather and cousin upgraded the trolley this year from a normal shopping trolley, they added some bike wheels, a disc brake and new paint work,” says Mia. “I’ll definitely be back next year.” Tom Perkins in Mac Attack won the Zoomers, Billy Twamley in Nitro Fish won the Sprinters, Steve Lovell in Kiwiana took out the Rockets class, The Pizza Garage won the F1 Corporates, Sophie Wasley in Pink Bird won Nippers best in class, while Spirit of the Derby went to Lochlan Cockerell in Blue Bomber.

Lynfords take home national award Lynfords has returned from the annual Danske Mobler conference award winners, after taking out Best Studio for the Stressless brand within New Zealand. The conference was held the last week of February in Sydney and was attended by owner Kay Thomason and store manager Hamish Greenwood. “For us it’s really important, because we’re the ex-
clusive retailers in the Nelson Marlborough regions, so it’s kind of like our identity and it’s something that we’ve been selling right from the start, Stressless is our point of difference from other furniture retailers,” says Lynfords’ Abbey Greenwood. The award is for both the Nelson and Blenheim stores and was awarded to them for continuously hav-
ing a strong presence and displays of Stressless in the region. Their sales per capita were also higher than most other New Zealand regions. “We have been selling Stressless at Lynfords since 2003 and the range was part of the main focus of the new Nelson store which opened in Richmond in 2010. The Nelson store is now in Stoke and Stressless
continues to be the flagship product range there,” says Abbey. The Stressless range has expanded from just recliner chairs, to lounge suites and full entertainment suites. The Lynfords showroom in Nelson has a large range of models for people to come in and comfort-test, as well as staff who are extremely knowledgeable about the brand.

Buddies get muddy, Wednesday, March 8: With a new school pool in the pipeline, Tasman School was thrilled to get a much-needed boost through their annual fund-raiser, the Sport Tasman Muddy Buddy. Around 900 people took part in the popular event which successfully raised $15,000. Kindergarten a first for Murchison, Wednesday, March 8: Murchison’s first kindergarten officially opened on Tuesday, March 14, and was ‘highly successful’ with lots of parents, children and extended family from the wider Murchison area gathering to celebrate. While teachers don’t have a total of how many children are now attending the centre, they say enrolments are filling up very quickly.

Students attending Road Safety Education Limited’s driver safety course at the Headingly Centre last Tuesday receive a certificate to mark the course’s 50,000th graduate.
Course aims to keep young drivers safe Simon Bloomberg Year 12 students from around Nelson and Tasman will be making better decisions behind the wheel after attending a hands-on driver safety education course at the Headingly Centre last week. Road Safety Education Limited runs a driver safety programme for senior high school students around the country and last week it came to Nelson. Students from Waimea College, Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls, Nayland College and Motueka High
School attended the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness programme which reached a milestone on Tuesday when it celebrated its 50,000th graduate. Road Safety Education programme manager Maria Lovelock says the aim of the course is to reduce trauma on our roads by educating senior high school students. Maria says the programme targets year 12 students because statistics show that the most dangerous time for any young road user is in the first six to 12 months of being a solo driver.
Maria says young people continue to be over-represented in deaths and injuries on our roads for a number of reasons including a lack of experience in driving situations and road conditions. She says the course is designed to change the way young people think and act on our roads, not only as drivers but also as passengers, to make them safer. “There are a number of reasons, some outside a young driver’s control, why they are at such high risk. They exhibit sensation-seeking behaviour, they are greatly
influenced by peer pressure, they often drive less road-worthy cars, can be sleepy and often drive at night or for fun. “But most importantly, they lack experience in the broad range of driving situations and road conditions. It’s up to us, as a community, to bridge that gap of inexperience and underdevelopment - that’s what the programme is all about.” Maria says they celebrated the programme’s 50,000th graduate by presenting a certificate to Nelson College which attended the
course last Tuesday. “We believe this programme is contributing to saving young people’s lives on the roads,” she says. “It is encouraging to see schools in the Nelson and Tasman area make this a priority and add it into their school calendar each year.” The programme is coordinated through Rotary with support from corporate sponsors including BOC, NZ Steel, Bridgestone, BOSCH and the Alexander Group as well as the Nelson city and Tasman district councils.

Education grant makes huge difference to Ashleigh’s study
Soroptimist Club of Waimea members, Annette Greenland, Barbara Bird and Helen Lewis, with education grant recipient Ashleigh Dwyer, second left, outside the NMIT campus where Ashleigh is completing a Bachelor of Social Work. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
Jessie Johnston The Soroptimist Club of Waimea are thrilled to be giving one young Nelson mum the chance to fulfil her dreams, thanks to their annual education grant. “Every year we give a grant to some person who we think can really use the money towards their education, they’ve got to be over 25 and it has to be their first tertiary qualification,” says soroptimist member, Helen Lewis. “We just love doing things to help the community and it’s giving people a chance, once they’ve got into marriage and children, to fulfil their dreams,” says Barbara Bird. Ashleigh Dwyer was one of 20 who applied for the annual grant of $2500 and as a mum of three children aged eight, seven and one and a half, it has made a huge difference towards achieving her Bachelor of Social Work at NMIT. “It’s such a huge help, it takes a lot of pressure off and makes it so much easier to actually get stuck into the work, rather than worrying about everything else that comes with it,” says Ashleigh. Now in her third year of the four-year degree, Ashleigh is looking forward to getting out of the campus and going on placement with Family Works, which is under Presbyterian Support, to do the Social Workers in Schools programme. “Growing up on the wrong side of the train tracks really highlighted some of the social issues that are in our community and I have a passion to get rid of them,” says Ashleigh. “I want to work with children and families in the community because I think that’s where the biggest change comes from.” In addition to her degree, Ashleigh also intends taking classes in Te Reo Maori and Tikanga Maori. “We’ve had some wonderful success stories and it’s just very humbling because, like Ashleigh, they are keeping many balls in the air to further their education, so to be able to assist that in some small way is just amazing,” says soroptimist member, Annette Greenland.

Leave it at 50kms do something about the people instead! Paul Newton. You can’t go much faster than 30km with the speed humps. Debbie O’Hara. Dumb!. The people live on the side of the roads on footpaths! Not the roads! That’s where the cars live! We have enough problems now with very poor road designs and no traffic flow. Mike Roberts. I think it’s a great idea places like Blenheim’s whole CBD is 30kph and I reckon it works real well. Michael Jeffery. I think it’s a good idea, even the side streets coming into Queen St. Even though it is unlikely to do 50km at the moment with the raised crossings but once the upgrade is finished it will be smoother and speeds will go up. However’ even with the raised crossings I witnessed one wanker accelerate and

Wairua Warrior champion facing plenty of obstacles
Nelson voluntary group among the best in NZ
I know the terrain but most of the course is a hidden secret. “The pain isn’t going to last forever,” he says. “There are times when you’re out and you still have two kilometres to go, but for me, I just think about it as seven minutes of effort and then I have the rest of the day to rest.” Ethan, a former New Zealand junior downhill mountainbiker, says he’s expecting plenty of sandbag drills but his aim is to win and get one of 10 spots for the world champs to be held in Ontario in October. The top three men and women at the Wairua Warrior will qualify to compete in the Prodivision at the worlds while the top 10 men and women will qualify to compete in agegroup divisions. Ethan says the Tasman district is one of the best places to train for such an event. Ethan is often accompanied on his training sessions by his dog Brian. Race organiser Greg Witika says entries are up to 550, more than 100 up on the event in 2017.
Volunteer educational group Histrionics is about to go head-to-head with the country’s best and brightest voluntary groups and organisations at the Trustpower National Community Awards. The Trustpower National Community Awards take place in the Rotorua Lakes region from March 24 to 26. Histrionics is representing Nelson-Tasman at the awards, an honour they won after being named Supreme Winner at the Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards last year. Histrionics joins 24 other voluntary groups or organisations from around the country that won their regional awards. It will give an eight minute presentation on what the group has achieved and why they deserve to be the winner and will be judged on the presentation along with a 1000 word summary of the organisation. The presentations will take place on Saturday 25 March in the Bay Trust Forum at Rotorua Energy Events Centre. The Winner, Runner-Up and recipient of the Whetū Mātaiata Award will be announced at an Awards dinner that evening at Blue Baths. Daryl Page and Gordon Taylor, along with Tasman district mayor Richard Kempthorne and his wife Jane will attend the awards.

His partner Alysia Simkin is also competing in the event and the couple are putting the finishing touches to her new coffee cart business that she will debut on the day. “After we are finished we’ll both be in there making coffees, so it should be a fun day,” says Ethan. The annual Wairua Warrior event near Cable Bay is a 12km
course for elite athletes with undulating terrain, a river , natural and man-made obstacles and lots of mud. There will be obstacles ranging from balance beams to barbed wire crawling, to sandbag carries, climbing walls and tyre drags. Ethan is a man who loves the mental challenge of keeping going when the energy tank is empty. “You can’t plan for this event,

Retirement is a time that everyone should look forward to, which is why this year’s Positive Ageing Expo at Headingly Centre will once again be packed with information, products and service providers, to help you enjoy some of the best years of your life. Those out there with skills they wish to carry on into
their retirement can utilise them within groups such as Menzshed, who will be doing demonstrations on the day, and the trapping and bird recovery groups that work out the back of Richmond. For those looking to get out on the regions great cycle trails, the E-bike may be the perfect tool so have a look for the E-

The expo will include companion driving services such as Driving Miss Daisy and retirement villages such as Ernest Rutherford and Summerset in the Sun. Both offer a great range of retirement living op-
tions including independent town houses and apartments, serviced apartments and a care centre. Simplicity Funerals will be there to answer any questions people have about saying goodbye to their loved ones, as well as giving advice on how to plan your own funeral now, to make things easier on family and friends.
Worry about keeping on top of maintenance at her Nelson home helped Jill McMullen make the decision to move to Summerset in the Sun. “I’m getting on a bit and started worrying about cleaning the windows and doing the garden,” says Jill. “I spoke with my sister about moving to a retirement village and she suggested I do it now while I’m in good health. My daughter also encouraged me to move. She came to see the apartment at Summerset with my granddaughter and they both said “we’d like to live in an apartment like this!” “Before I knew it I had sold my house and moved into a serviced apartment with my 17 year old cat Mitzi,” says Jill. “When I first visited the village I thought I might like a villa, but decided I didn’t need two bedrooms. Having an apartment means I don’t need to move if my needs change as I get older and need additional help with everyday things.” Talk to Pam at the Positive Ageing Expo to find out more about life at Summerset in the Sun.

Preliminary reports show safer conditions for pupils and the data supplied by the signs will continue to be monitored. Many will have noticed work being undertaken on the car park behind the shops. Extra car parks and improved drainage is most welcome. This, it is hoped, will take pressure off the car parks at the front of the shops.
Discussions will be held about future landscaping of the area. By the time you read this the rededication ceremony to bring the names of all those from the district who fell in two World Wars into one place - the Brightwater War Memorial Gates - will have been held. This has been a long-pursued wish of the association to honour all the district’s fallen. Much hard work has been put into this project by a dedicated few. A representative

Stanton found guilty of assault Brittany Spencer Trafalgar St protestor Lewis Stanton has been found guilty of assault at the Nelson District Court on Monday. Mr Stanton, who likes to be known as Hone Ma Heke, was facing one charge of common assault after an incident on Trafalgar St on November 20 last year. The incident occurred after an antiLewis protest march down Trafalgar St ended outside Farmers, where Mr Stanton camps. A verbal stouch began between the protestors and Mr Stanton before Mr Stanton threw a punch at protest organiser Ru Dawson. The altercation was captured on camera by a Nelson Weekly journalist. That footage was used in court today as evidence. Mr Stanton was defended in court by
Nelson lawyer Steven Zindel. He argued that Mr Stanton’s actions were in self-defence because one of his cardboard boxes was kicked. Mr Stanton told the court that he reacted to protect his property and himself. “Ru and I were having some fairly sharp words then he kicked my box. He had absolutely no right to kick my box so I defended myself with one slug. “When he kicked it I didn’t know if I would be next, or where he was going to stop.” However, Judge Mill ruled that Mr Stanton was the aggressor and the threat to personal safety was not enough to warrant his reaction. “I find that Mr Stanton was not acting in self-defence, as seen in the footage, Mr Stanton was the aggressor.

Lewis Stanton could be facing jail after being found guilty of assault on Monday. “The situation could have been diffused in a different way,” he said. Mr Stanton will be sentenced on April 20 and could be facing jail time, or a suspended
sentence. Judge Mill said if sent to prison, Mr Stanton will only come back once released. “I have sent him to prison before and it was an action of futility.
Whatever I do, I don’t believe it will stop him doing what he wants to do.” Mr Stanton said he will not participate in community service as it is against his beliefs.
Nelson police officers honoured For three Nelson police officers, entering a burning building to rescue its occupant is just another day on the job, but in a ceremony on Friday the trio was celebrated and given bravery awards. Constable Aisea Lata, Constable Hamish Wybrow and Sergeant Brett Currie all put their lives on the line in the early hours of September 20, 2015, at a property on Atawhai Dr. Aisea was awarded the Royal Humane Society’s Bronze
Medal for rescuing a man from a burning building and returning for a second time to ensure no one else was inside. Hamish was also presented with a Bronze Medal for assisting with the man’s rescue, and for his repeated efforts to reenter the fully ablaze building. Brett was presented with the Certificate of Merit for creating a safe zone for the fire service, and for entering the building to discharge a fire extinguisher as part of his valiant
efforts to put out the fire. The Royal Humane Society of New Zealand presented the three New Zealand Bravery Awards in a ceremony at the Council Chambers. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese, who presented the awards, says it was a real honour and privilege. “Being asked to risk your life to save a stranger’s is not something we expect to face, and it is testament to the selflessness of these police officers.”

Richmond motocross rider Hayden Wilkinson is aiming to secure third place in the 125cc class when he heads north for the fourth and final round of the New Zealand Motocross Champs in Taupo on March 25. Hayden, who is having one of his best seasons since he started competing as a five-year-old, is in third place on 154 points after three rounds. Although he can’t catch the two pace-setters, Hayden Smith (208 points) and Kurtis Lilly (205 points), Hayden is determined to
retain third place ahead of Levin’s Dan Bell (143 points). “Taupo is a good track and I always race pretty well up there so I’m looking forward to it,” Hayden, who rides a Yamaha, says. “I can’t catch the two leaders so my aim is to stay on my bike and not do anything stupid to make sure I stay in third.” Hayden says he’s delighted with his form this season although concedes that the two top riders in his class have been too quick. He finished third in round one in Timaru, fifth in round two at Rotorua and fourth in round three in Manawatu with his best placings being two thirds
in the first round. “I can’t compete with the amount of riding they do in the North Island. The top guys are on teams and are getting paid to ride they have two bikes and practise a lot. “I only have my own bike and pay my own way. I have some good sponsors but it’s still very expensive and time consuming.” Hayden says his key sponsors include Cardells Hair Salon in Nelson which is co-owned by his girlfriend Jade Harrington. Hayden’s employer J Lewis Building is also a sponsor along with two of his “good mates” Adam Lithgow who owns Moto Tech in Brightwater and Clinton Manderson
who owns Mandos Flooring in Christchurch. If Hayden finishes third in the national championship, it will be his best result since he finished on the podium in the 85cc class 13 years ago. “I raced in MX1 for five years before I sold my bike, but then I saw a 125 on Facebook and brought it. I’m having fun since I stepped down to 125s and when you are having fun you race well”. Nelson’s Reece Walker and Liam Hutton will also be riding in Taupo in the MX2 class. They will be racing against championship leader and former Takaka rider Hamish Harwood.

Brett Nicholls makes most of luck of the draw Jody Scott Nelson speedway driver Brett Nicholls picked up one of the major Super stock prizes last weekend, when he paired with Palmerston North’s Wayne Hemi to win the “Battle of the Stocks in Christchurch. The battle pairs a South Island car with a North Island counterpart from a marble draw. There have been many try to win it over the past 24 seasons but luck of the draw, plus intense racing with the best in the country makes it one of the most sought after and tallest trophies to put on the mantel piece. Brett never made it out in heat 2 but his partner
was continuing to get top placings, Wayne then won the shoot out on night two to claim the $1000 prize for winning from the back spot. A solid finish in the penultimate heat secured Wayne the individual title with a race to spare and between he and Brett they held a 30 point buffer going into the last heat. Both drivers played it safe watching to see if they would be taken out but they weren’t targeted and claimed overall victory by 15 points. Brett will head back to get ready for the Easter Champs before heading to the Legends meeting in Palmerston North to end the season.
saturdaych 25 th Mar
Nayland College student Brayden Nell is the form youth driver in the South Island at the moment, after winning in a run-off against team mate Hamish Carter in the youth event at Woodford Glen Speedway on Friday night, He backed up that success by winning the South island title in Ashburton on Sunday. It’s a good time to peak with the New Zealand Youth Title in Oxford in May. A month off over the Christmas period seems to have refreshed his driving skills and he will be keen to take on the North Island drivers when they arrive at the New Zealand title. The 88N car has had a
few tweaks over the season, which is showing dividends with plenty of racing still to come. The next big challenge will be King of the Coast in Greymouth on April 8. There will be a good line-up of cars for that title, then back here for Easter Championships. Brayden might need a bigger trophy cabinet if he keeps up his present form. This week racing returns to the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway with the demolition derby being the feature event, the final round of club champs for Productions and TQs plus hitto-pass with the stock cars.

Nelson Rowing Club will be strongly represented at the Maadi Cup National Secondary Schools Regatta on Lake Karapiro near Cambridge, which starts this weekend. The pinnacle event on the secondary school rowing regatta will see more than 2200 athletes compete, with students from Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls likely to be in the hunt for medals near the end of the week-long regatta. Both schools combined to win four gold medals, three silvers and a bronze at the South Island Secondary School Championships on Lake Ruataniwha near Twizel two weeks ago. Nelson Rowing Club coach Kaye Surgeoner says the team heads north with plenty of confidence. "Everyone was really happy after South Island’s and while it’s hard to compare times between the North Island and South Island because Karapiro is faster, we know we can compete even though there are some strong rowers up there."
Nelson Giants cling to positives after two defeats Jacob Page Sports Editor
sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz
There may be signs of improvement but it is shaping up to a long NBL season for the Mike Pero Nelson Giants. After being thumped by 38 points by title contenders Southland Sharks in Invercargill last Thursday, the Giants lost to presea-
son wooden spoon contenders Taranaki Mountainairs 93-76 at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday night. Having started the season with two losses for the first time since 2011, the job doesn’t get any easier as the Canterbury Rams come to Nelson on Saturday night. There were positives – the Giants scored more points in one quarter against Taranaki than they
did in the entire first half against Southland, and American import Curtis Washington offered more point scoring help (16) for star Finn Delany (26). However, Finn played every minute of the loss which will surely take its toll over the season if they super-heavy workload continues. Coach Alan McAughtry says he was relieved his team started bet-
ter but admitted they were outrebounded and lacked intensity at crucial moments. “We were all embarrassed after the Southland game and rebounds hurt us but when you’re playing athletic guys our defence can’t break down like it does at times.” The Giants’ other American import Joe Slocum again struggled. After not scoring a point against
Southland, he scored just seven points in 30 minutes on court, shooting two for nine on the night. “I know there’s a lot of talk about our Americans and we expect more from them but we are a team and we expect more from everyone. Joe is finding his feet in a tough league and Curtis is a work in progress battling those big athletic, guys.”

Waimea Old Boys strike mix of youth and experience for 2017 Jacob Page Sports Editor
sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Waimea Old Boys senior A coach Mark Milne is determined the 2017 rugby season will be smoother than last year. Somehow, WOB scrambled into the semi-finals of the Car Company Nelson Bays Division One competition despite going through plenty of players in what was a disjointed year. With the season beginning on
Saturday, Mark knows that with an increased emphasis on preseason training and a closer working relationship between the team and the Senior Bs, the team has a better chance of challenging the top teams like they are used to. “Last year was difficult but we learned from it and we are stronger for it,” Mark says. WOB have a good mix of new and returning players with Jeff Lepa and Daniel Hytongue likely to add some steel in the forwards, while halfback Kade Whiting has
returned from Otago and James Lash will likely run the backline after another strong Heartland campaign for Buller in 2016. The addition of exciting Taranaki prospect Eli Kneepkens to the backline will be an interesting thing to watch. Just where the prolific point scorer fits in is still up in the air but he has played as a first five and winger mostly. Familar faces also return with young winger Mitch Amberger returning after a promising sea-
son in 2016. Lock Lee McBrydie will be another dependable in the pack while young Bailey Scott will be eager for game time. Former Waimea Combined centre Michael Stringer is another fresh face as is captain from that First XV team last year, No 8 Jeremy Lordan, who was a workhorse for the schoolboys in 2016. Mark says the team was eager to improve its win/loss record, especially at home at Jubilee Park where they were beaten more
often than they were used to last year. Wanderers will be the team to beat but will be without Trael Joass and Tone Ng Shiu who are both on national sevens duty. Round one for both the NPD Tasman Trophy and Car Company Nelson Bays Division One competition sees WOB travel to Tahunanui to take on Marist. Nelson host Stoke at Neale Park and Wanderers welcome Kahurangi to Brightwater Domain. All games start at 3pm.
A lifetime in volleyball
Simon Bloomberg
One of volleyball’s originals Colin Redpath was recognised for his long and dedicated service to the sport when he was presented with a Volleyball New Zealand Service Award and Life Membership at Saxton Stadium on Sunday. The award is reserved for people who have made a significant contribution to volleyball in this country which has enhanced the game regionally, nationally and internationally. And Colin has made a big impact at all three levels since he started out on his long volleyball journey as young player at Cashmere High School in Christchurch. Colin went on to play for Cashmere Old Boys, which later became the Shirley Volleyball Club from 1979 to 1995, taking on the role of playercoach from 1983 to 1992. He established and ran a successful volleyball programme at Ellesmere College from 1987 to 1997 before moving to Nelson where he helped transform Waimea College into one of the country’s top volleyball schools. Colin has also been a successful coach at club level taking Nelson Bays and Pines Nelson to national titles and has both coached and played for the junior and senior men’s national teams. He was named Nelson Coach of the Year in 2012 and received the Tasman Volleyball Association Distinguished Service Award in 2015. “It’s pretty cool getting this award but it’s not what you
do these things for,” Colin says. “There are always a lot of people involved when you play for or coach a team so I think this is recognition for them as much as me.” The Waimea College teacher says he enjoyed the “sheer excitement of playing” when he was younger and now gets just as much satisfaction out of coaching. “Volleyball is the ultimate team game and I really enjoying seeing the guys improve and progress. That’s why I’m still doing it.” Nelson Bays Volleyball Association operations manager Pamela Brodie says Colin has “always provided a high calibre of coaching from school level to national level that’s been evidenced by the number of junior and senior men’s players representing New Zealand. Colin has helped create and maintain pathways in volleyball for all young players. He is passionate about providing quality playing experiences through coaching and enjoyment of the game.” Colin is the fourth person from Nelson to receive Life Membership after Neil Anderson, Ross Baldwin and Allan Brodie. Fraser Galloway received the Volleyball New Zealand Service Award in1999. The day got even better for Colin after his presentation when his Waimea College boys A team won the Tasman champs in their final hit-out before competing in next week’s nationals in Palmerston North. Waimea College girls A also won their final against Nelson College for Girls 3-1.

Tasman star began new life in Nelson Jacob Page Tinashe Marowa's second stint in Nelson has proved just as life-changing as his first. The 20-year-old had a breakout season for Tasman United in the franchise's debut national season and it looks set to propel him to bigger and better things in football. On the eve of the team's last game, a 5-2 win at Trafalgar Park against Southern United, the diminutive attacker returned to Nelson Central School and the ESOL class he had been in 12 years prior. Tinashe spent six months at the school after arriving as a refugee from Zimbabwe. He did not speak any English, but now he has ambitions of playing for the All Whites. Tinashe scored in the win on Saturday. As he celebrated he looked for his English teacher from 12 years earlier, spotted her and gave her a thumbs up. “I wouldn’t have guessed
the season would have played out like it has. I came down [from Auckland] on trial and I managed to do enough to make the team, and them playing with quality strikers like Paul Ifill and Ernie [Ermal Hajdari] has helped my game so much.” Tinashe has spent the past fortnight training with the Wellington Phoenix and has picked up a short-term contract with the Wellington Phoenix Reserves, His ultimate goal of playing for the All Whites may take him to bigger and better things than Tasman United, but Tinashe says Nelson will always hold a special place with him. Tinashe says it was a great experience to go back to Nelson Central School on Tuesday. “I really enjoyed it, and to see the kids who were in the same boat I was when I was eight was very humbling. To have my old teacher Brenda Black watching was great.”
Tinashe Marowa capped a stellar season for Tasman United with a goal in their 5-2 win over Southern United at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. Photo: Evan Barnes/Shuttersport. Tinashe was named Tasman United Young Player of the Year for his attacking exploits, which saw him lead the team's golden boot standings until Paul Ifill scored four on Saturday. Cameron Lindsay was named Player of the Year after a rock-
solid and dependable season. Tasman finished eighth in the 10-team league with four wins, five draws and nine losses in their debut season. They finished ahead of Hamilton Wanderers and Southern United. The hard work starts again for season two.

Top family fun run aims for 500 Nelson’s annual fun run for everyone will celebrate its fifth year next month by sticking to its family-friendly formula. The City2Saxton race on April 9 has built up a loyal following since it began in 2013, with 405 people completing the 10km from the Victory Community Centre to Saxton Field last year. Sport Tasman’s Jane Miles says they hope to crack the 500 mark this year after feedback from previous participants indicated they like the race just the way it is. “They like the friendly atmosphere, the non-competitive lowkey nature which is still a challenge for most and the fact that it is well organised.” Janes says the family-focused
event was ideal for youngsters who can compete with their siblings and parents on “some of our most scenic walkways and cycleways”. It is also “easy and affordable to enter and achievable for everyone.’’ For the first time the route will be unchanged, taking in a large stretch of the Railway Reserve and cycleways. “We think we have got the right course that is as much off road and as safe as we can make it.’’ To encourage as much participation as possible, the race can be done on foot, scooter, skateboard, wheelchair, mobility scooter or pram. Children under six can bike, while skipping ropes, hula hoops and other props are encouraged.
“It’s a neat thing to do on a Sunday morning with the whole family,’’ Jane says. It also serves as a way for people to get in shape for the winter sports season and as a training run for those planning to enter the Jennian Homes Mother’s Day fun run and the Saint Clair Vineyard half marathon in May. A team of 40 volunteers will act as cheerleaders and help out along the route, there will be a water station and portaloos to provide relief and music, coffee carts and food vendors at the end of the race to revive racers. Families with three generations competing will go into a draw for a weekend in Golden Bay provided by Mohua Motels and Brigand Cafe in Takaka.
