Car seat law to save childrens’ lives School principals and some parents say changes to the age that children must be in a car seat will be a pain in the bum, but NZTA insists there is only one purpose behind the move – to save lives. Changes to the law come into effect next Friday, November 1, which will make it mandatory for children to ride in an approved child restraint until the age of seven. Currently the law applies for children until the age of five. Local groups like Plunket and the Nelson
Parents Centre say they support the move but the new law could be a problem for local schools if they take children on school outings. Two local principals spoken to by Waimea Weekly say it will be frustrating but they understand the safety reasons behind it. “I think it will be good to ensure students are transported safely,” says Ranzau School principal Dave Sampson. “But you look at some six year olds and you’d think well absolutely they should still have a booster
seat but then some others are quite big for their age. I know it’s easier to put a target age on it, but it’s an interesting one.” Dave says it is yet to be seen how much of an impact the new law change will have on his school, which occasionally takes trips to the Richmond Library or to sports fields in Brightwater. More parents could now be required to help out with transport to accommodate. “Do we need to have some car seats in reserve at school? Because you’d hate for one kid to miss out if they

forgot to leave theirs at school. But it’s like anything; it’ll take time to get used to.” Don McLean, who heads the Nelson Principal’s Association, says he’s put it to parents to be aware to bring their five to seven year olds to school in a child restraint. “We flagged it to parents that it’s going to bring some issues around transport for trips. It is about safety and it would be remiss of us to go and say, ‘we aren’t going to do trips SEE PAGE 2
Big expo for little vehicles Mention models and hobbies and most will automatically think dinky toys and plastic plane kitsets. But time and technology have completely changed the face of modelling as visitors to this weekend’s Nelson Model & Hobby Expo at the Stoke Hall will be able to witness. While kitsets and scratch-building of models is still a huge part of the modelling scene, the advent of realistic and extremely detailed “off-the-shelf ” diecast and resin models has added a whole new dimension to the scene allowing those involved to build up extensive collections without having to find the time and patience to build from scratch. For many involved, what started out, usually early in life, as a hobby has now become SEE PAGE 2

now’. Preschools and kindergartens have been doing it for years. “We’ve really tried to take it in a more positive front and say ‘well this is about safety, so we’re going to do what we can’,” he says. In the ten years from 2002 to 2011, crashes on New Zealand roads claimed the lives of 24 child passengers aged 5 to 7, with another 115 suffering serious injuries. NZTA road safety director Ernst Zöllner says the new rules will help to keep more children safe on New Zealand roads. “The new rules for child restraint
use are being introduced for one purpose – to stop children from being killed or seriously injured when travelling in vehicles. The death or serious injury of any child is a tragedy, and even more so when it can be prevented with the use of simple and widely available equipment like child restraints.” Nelson Bays area commander, Inspector Steve Greally, says they will work with other agencies and schools to educate parents before ticketing them. “You’re likely to see us around schools at drop off and pick up times and we’ll be stopping cars and checking that children are ap-
propriately restrained. We will also be making sure parents understand their responsibilities under the new law.” While the new law may create some headaches for schools and parents that may have already got rid of child restraints, support groups have applauded the move. Bev Hamilton, a committee member of the Nelson Parent Centre, says that overall she is pleased with the increase in age but believes it should be based on height to allow for seven year olds that will be shorter than a 148cm height recommendation for using child restraints.

Put together by a small group of local enthusiasts, joined by visitors from Christchurch and Blenheim, the expo has endeavoured to bring together a wide variety covering many facets of the modelling world. “Our focus for this expo has been to put together a display that incorporates the multiple facets that make up our chosen pastime,” says expo spokesman Bruce Jury.
“Whilst our chosen feature is a tribute to Kiwi’s in motorsport, including a special display to one of Nelson’s great drivers, the late Jason Richards, visitors can also expect to see in excess of 1000 items on display including hundreds of model cars, trucks, boats and heavy construction equipment. Plus steam engines, slot cars, Meccano models, decorated eggs and an extensive collection of Star Wars models. In fact, just about something for everyone, young and old.”

John Bergman says a little part of him dies every time he puts an animal down. More than 3300 impounded dogs were killed in Auckland just two years ago after they went unclaimed or were deemed too dangerous to be adopted. But here, where John the self confessed “animal lover” is contracted to the Tasman District Council as the enforcement officer, nearly every measure is made to make sure a dog gets a second chance. Only about “a dozen” dogs are put down after coming through the pound each year and that is because they are simply too dangerous to re-home, or in some cases are too sick to be kept alive. “Another council I worked at in Christchurch had the policy, as in most councils throughout the country, after seven days they were looking at the dogs to be put down. But we’re animal lovers at the end of the day and we want to give the dogs a chance,” says John. “You never get used to putting dogs down. It’s bloody awful.

It affects people putting an animal down and I think part of yourself dies with it.” The most common reason a dog ends up in the pound is if it has been wandering, which can be due to the owner moving or not having a dog proof property. However, the biggest issue in Tasman is to do with excessive barking. And while that might be because a dog is
bored or wants to see what is on the other side of the fence, it can also be a result of mistreatment and starvation. “Eighteen months ago two dogs were left in the kennel. One was missing, we suspect it was dead, and one was starving and weighed just 7kg. So we took the owner to court and took the dog to the pound, had him vetted, rehomed and he’s back out chasing pigs again.”

Parts arrive for $80m ship repair Andrew Board Editor
andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz Parts have arrived in Nelson for an $80 million repair job that will see around 200 workers fly into the city. The 250 metre long oil storage ship Raroa will be repaired in Nelson this month and will be the biggest ship to ever come to Nelson. Port Nelson won the contract to fix the ship last month and on Friday a ship carrying parts for the Raroa sailed into town, in preparation for the repair work. Port Nelson chief executive Martin Byrne says the Raroa should arrive in Nelson within the next few weeks and the job is a huge boost for the port and the wider community. “We’re very pleased and it is certainly significant for us.” The ship is owned by OMV New Zealand and operates at the Maari off shore oil field, off the Taranaki coast. Nelson beat Port Taranaki for the rights to berth the ship while it is repaired. Martin says around 200 workers from around New Zealand will fly to Nelson for the repair, which is expected to take between three and five weeks. “They’ve all got to find places to stay and suchlike so it will be good for Nelson.”
The Raroa, which will arrive in Nelson within the next few weeks to undergo a reported $80 million worth of repairs. He says Nelson won the contract for various reasons including the city’s sheltered harbour, favourable weather conditions and the quality of the support businesses at Port Nelson and he hopes it could lead to more. “We certainly hope it opens the door for more big projects like this, these specific projects with vessels like these are very unusual because once they go into operation they’re not designed to come back into port but they’ve had some unusual issues with it.” Locals will only be able to get a good
view of the ship as it enters and leaves the port through the Cut, or from the Port Hills, while it is in port. “It will certainly be an impressive sight,” says Martin. In announcing the repair work, OMV said there would be a refurbishment and upgrade of processing equipment and the installation of a new swivel, which allows the vessel to rotate around its mooring. Once the work is complete the Raroa will return to its permanent location in the Maari oil field, New Zealand’s largest off shore oil field.

All Blacks coming to Richmond The All Blacks are coming to Richmond this Friday. As part of their annual All Blacks to the Nation visits to different parts of New Zealand, the All Blacks are visiting Nelson and Richmond in a flying visit to say thanks to fans for all their support this year ahead of the northern hemisphere tour. The four players coming to Richmond are Brodie Retallick, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Wyatt Crockett and Beauden Barrett. The All Blacks squad for the Air New Zealand European Tour was announced on Sunday. The other provinces lucky enough to get a visit are: Pukekohe, Tauranga, Matamata, Palmerston North, Timaru and Queenstown. The provincial visits have been a popular day with fans and the players since the first flying visits in 2011 before the Rugby World Cup. All Blacks captain Richie McCaw says the players enjoyed the opportunity to visit cities and towns that don’t normally get to see the All Blacks up close. The flying visits were a way to acknowledge support from fans, young and old from all over New Zealand. “We know that we have huge support from all parts of the country and our fans are a big part of what makes this team special. The visits have become popular with the guys as it really is a day for us to thank our supporters,” he says. Acting CEO for the Tasman Rugby Union, Les Edwards, says they had been working hard on making the All Blacks visit to town a memorable one for fans and the players. “We only have the boys on the ground for a few hours, but we’re determined to get them meeting as many people as possible.” While in town the players will meet children at Broadgreen Intermediate, make a public lunch time appearance at Richmond Mall, visit Nelson Hospital and serve customers before flying out of Nelson Airport.

New roundabout will help Queen St traffic
A new roundabout is being built on Queen St and Wensley Rd.
A new roundabout is being installed on Queen St, in prepration for the extra traffic from the new retail development at K-mart. The Wensley Rd and Queen St roundabout is expected to take at least another week to complete. Tasman District Council transportation manager Gary Clark says the low-cost roundabout will also provide a new entry and exit point to
the main Richmond car park area which serves Richmond Mall, K Mart, The Warehouse and Couplands. “The roundabout will reduce vehicle speed on Queen St and improve accessibility to the parking area,” he says. As part of the Richmond Town Centre Project and stormwater improvements, a more permanent roundabout is planned for construction in 2016.

Prime disappears off TV screens
The disappearing act of a popular TV channel Prime has had viewers up in arms and local technicians scrambling to help restore it. Freeview satellite users lost all access to Prime TV at the start of the month when the company changed the way it transmits the channel, switching one satellite for another while leaving viewers cut off in the process. Local Freeview installer Don Clementson of FAV SAT says he has been inundated with calls regarding the loss of
Prime and says Freeview has made a mistake in not letting their customers know about the changes in advance. “I knew it was happening three weeks prior to that but I assumed they’d put a message on the screen saying it was going off and they would explain it but they didn’t, they just turned it off. All of a sudden the phone was just going and going.” People who tune into Freeview via aerial have been unaffected, while users of unaccredited revievers and even some ap-
proved Freeview receivers have been shut out. Don says he’s been manually tuning receivers in for customers who were unable to do so themselves and with up to 70 phone calls a day, wishes things had been communicated better. “It’s one big stuff up by Freeview basically, they should have let people know prior.” With the rugby scheduled to air over the weekend, Freeview was forced to backtrack on the switch over, reinstating the old signal until the end of the month to
allow customers to get their heads around the change. Darren Richards of Nelson TV & Video Services says his phone has also been going red hot since the cut off and he’s even had a special message put on his phone to accommodate for the number of calls coming through. “It most certainly is frustrating and it could have been handled better. I think it’s just the not knowing that has really brassed a lot of people off.”

Grandma wins a year’s supply of eggs Lynn Hall, an Upper Moutere grandma, has won a year’s supply of eggs from Ewing Poulty after being randomly selected during their international egg day celebrations last week. And to help her eat them is grandson Daniel Hall, 11, who took home a cook book after winning an omelet making competition. Lynn says the pair attended the event as it was in the school holidays and had never been before. “We went at 8am and
we were very impressed,” she says. Daniel quickly chimed in to say the food was why the event was impressive. “There were poached eggs, scrambled eggs, and it was all free,” he says. Ewing Poultry takes part in international egg day by giving out a free breakfast to its customers who can then take part in a series of challenges to win prizes. Around 350 people turned up to claim the free breakfast, with 35kg of bacon,
20kg of breakfast sausages, 300 hash browns and hundreds of eggs devoured over the morning. Company director Paul Ewing says the idea to take part was a way of giving back to the community. “We had around 350 people through. It’s a commercial thing obviously because we’re trying to promote eggs, but it’s an international thing and it’s a nice way of giving back,” he says. “It’s good getting to talk to customers and it was pretty cool.”

Thousands turn out for parade Nelson’s streets were packed with smiles, colour, music and plenty of people on Friday night to celebrate the annual Masked Parade and Carnivale. More than 3000 Nelsonians from 50 groups paraded through the inner city streets and crowds of thousands watching from the footpaths. The party continued after the Masked Parade with the carnivale which saw crowds listen to a free concert at the top of Trafalgar St and enjoy food stalls and other attractions around the city. Organisers say they were thrilled with the high level of spectator interaction and the huge effort many participants had put in to design elaborate and colourful costumes
in the Adventurous Journeys theme of the parade. Samba de Sol won the Kim Merry Supreme Group Award for their outstanding entry. Sergeant Shane Miles, of Nelson, says the Masked Parade was once again a great community event with very little trouble for police to deal with despite the large numbers drawn to the city centre to enjoy it. “Hundreds of cars were stopped at road policing check points and only one driver found to be over the limit,” says Shane. Other winners of the parade were Karl Wulff for the best individual, Leshan Dance Troupe for second best group, Hampden St School for best school and Appleby School for second best school.

More Ark students graduate
The Nelson Ark held its 14th Apart program graduation, where young people partnered with previously unwanted dogs showed off the training they had learnt over the past eight weeks. The graduation is a chance for Nelson Ark supporters to come along “and see what we do”. Those in attendance were funders, council representatives, foster families of the dogs, and caregivers of the students. Karen Howieson of the Nelson Ark was pleased with how Friday’s event went with five students showcasing what they had learnt over the past few months. “The students did really well and so did the dogs. Three of the dogs went to new homes. There’s usually lots of anxiousness, but they all stepped up and did really well.” Five dogs are currently up for adoption. For enquiries please phone 542 3866.

Truck show a honking success
From 1 November the NZ Transport agency’s new rules around the use of child restraints in cars comes into effect. The rule changes mean that children will be required to be in an approved child seat or booster seat until their seventh birthday. Seat belts in cars are designed to most effectively protect an average sized adult in a crash. Children, because they are smaller and have a different body shape to adults, need additional seating equipment to keep them as safe as adults in a car. Parents need to make sure they can comply with the new law when it comes into effect next week and have the appropriate seating available for their children. For some people this is going to involve some initial expense. The thing to remember is that these changes have been introduced to reduce preventable deaths and injuries to children travelling in vehicles. In the 10 years from 2003 to 2011, 24 child passengers aged 5 to 7 were killed in crashes and another 115 suffered serious injuries. If using a child seat would have saved any one of those children then I say it’s worth it. Dealing with the death of a child is one of the hardest jobs my officers attend so we are fully supportive of any measures being taken to save those young lives. From 1 November Police will be required to enforce the new law. Initially we will be working with other agencies and schools to educate parents. You’re likely to see us around schools at drop off and pick up times and we’ll be stopping cars and checking that children are appropriately restrained. We will also be making sure parents understand their responsibilities under the new law. Our initial response will be education focussed, however this will be followed by an enforcement phase where officers may issue infringement notices to drivers carrying children who are not restrained properly. My hope is that everyone who is carrying children in a vehicle takes this law change on board quickly. After all it’s simply about saving children’s lives.
Stoke School’s Truck Show was so successful organisers might need to find an alternate venue for next year’s event. More than 50 big rigs were on display at the school grounds on Saturday and $4000 was raised from it. But Melanie Edwards, who is on the PTA and helped organise the event, says there was simply no room for more trucks, and some drivers had to be turned away in the weeks leading up to it. “We may outgrow it but

BOOT CAMP Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clerq with some of the cook books that will be delivered to 30,000 homes in Tasman and Nelson today. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Mall cook book delivered Richmond Mall has searched the region for Nelsonians’ favourite recipes and now it’s ready to deliver them to you. The mall set out to create a cook book filled with favourite recipes from around the region to help celebrate its 40th birthday this month. The call for recipes netted hundreds of great ideas says mall manager Belinda de Clerq. “I was so surprised by the response we got. It was really great and I’ve had people come up to me and ask when it’s coming out. People have been following it along so it’s great that it’s now
out and people can start using it.” A competition to find the best overall recipe was awarded to Stoke lady Elaine Flannery with her Christmas Plum Duff. The cook book is broken down into various categories including baking, family meals, desserts, for kids, Christmas and jams and preserves. Along with the 30,000 copies that will go out in every Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly today, another 1000 will be available at Richmond Mall says Belinda, for those who may want to send a copy to someone out of the region.

Heading off road, on a scooter!
The idea of driving down the road on a scooter didn’t hold much appeal for Craig Morris – let alone driving one across some of the worst off-road tracks in the country. Craig says after years of riding “big bikes” he had to be talked into the Survivor Scooter Challenge by his wife Jenny but admits they haven’t looked back since. “I was a bit reluctant, but I thought ok so we started looking around for some scooters and when we got them we started playing around with them, it was like being young again. We thought ‘oh, this is a bit of fun’.” The pair are now fully committed to the latest Survivor Scooter Challenge which will see a group of mainly Nelson scooter drivers ride along the West Coast over four days in January. Organiser Jason Monopoli says there’ll be plenty of challenges for the group, including river crossings and plenty of hills. But he says it has always been a blast and the focus is on completing it as a team, not speed. “This is no fully-catered, holdyour-hand, quiet weekend. Budget accommodation will be supplied and there will be support vehicles – but this trip

Jason says it’s not too late to join Craig, Jenny and the rest of the team on the challenge and the best way to find out more information is to visit www.survivorscooter.com. He says they are also on the hunt for a local charity to donate money to, preferably involved with youth, to enquire more, visit the website.
should be seen as a group of like-minded people bonding on a unique adventure,” he says. Craig says now they’re signed up he’s really looking forward to the event, which also aims to raise $5000-$6000 for a yet-tobe-named charity. “The charity side of it appealed to us as well, but now we’ve got hooked on it and we’re thinking ‘what can we do to make it go faster’. Origin Dance Crew is through to the semi-finals of New Zealand’s Got Talent, and the group’s coach believes they have the talent to go all the way. but there’s a bit of pressure to be better than your audition so you really need to step it up. It’s been fun though, and it’s totally different to making up a dance for a regular dance competition.” Last year’s winner was a singer from Blenheim, and Gemma says it’s difficult when competing against such a vast variety of performers. “They’re down to the top 30 so there’s just so much talent too. But we’re using this as an opportunity to showcase what we do and to promote ourselves. Hopefully lots of people vote for us.”
It is always best for you to take the dog with you, cover the bird and tell your agent if your cat has any behavior problems. Cats are usually fine as they are able to find a secure place to hide in the garden, then shoot back into the house when the buyers are outside.

Rural properties have many more pets and animals, however these are usually contained in paddocks, stables or yards. Rural buyers are usually familiar with stock, electric fences, farm gates and other hazards and hopefully your agent will have some rural background. If you are worried about your pets then talk to your agent and formalize a pet management plan that will put everyone at ease.

New development for Richmond: I see this new development going up on what was vacant land on Queen St and now I’ve found out it is Kmart, Warehouse, vegie, butcher and Couplands shops that are being built. I think this will bring more people into Richmond and out of Nelson, more people will have more jobs in the Richmond district. People will now be buying more houses in Richmond and there will be more houses being built. I think the Richmond Mall is growing day by day and people are doing more shopping there. And the development of the new car parks are getting bigger for more customers. They are renewing footpaths and roads and a round about where the developments are taking place. Nelson to Richmond, Nelson people are coming here to Richmond especially Thursdays and weekends. It might shut out more shops in Richmond, which is my only concern. But it might bring more holidaymakers in to Richmond for their holidays for shopping bargains in the Warehoue and K-mart. I must say I always knew there would be more development in Richmond and it’s good to see it happen. Peter Bond, Richmond.

Thanks from candidates: The other day I was congratulated on my election result in the LakesMurchison Ward. Initially I thought they were mistaken and wasn’t sure how to respond. A big thank you to all of you who voted for me because I stood up and came out with some quite strong stuff that many people laughed at, but you had the courage to vote with your heads and give me the courage to see it through; I can’t thank you all enough. What I see now is actually a win for our community - I was the lone voice in the room encouraging being proactive about our ever changing environment with more on-farm water storage projects etc. and suddenly the incumbent is pledging to do just this. If it took campaigning to finally get action that will have impact then I couldn’t ask for more, I don’t have to be at endless council meetings to affect change. Sue Wilson.

First step complete for local charity An African township of 30,000 now has clean running water and it’s all thanks to a Nelson-based charity. Volunteers Matthew McDowell, Gideon Matorino and David Barnes, of Water for Prosperity, recently travelled to Torwood in Zimbabwe to aide the installation of three groundwater bores at a school, crèche and on council land. Before the trip, villagers were forced to walk for hours to get fresh water, or alternatively drank from a green, stagnant stream. “There’s a big mine next to it. The stream is green and it doesn’t move. Some people are washing in it and some people are drinking it,” explains Matthew. “Otherwise they were queuing for hours and hours just to get 20L of water. You can’t say these people are slackers though, they don’t have time to go out and get a job because they’ve got to get water.” The charity was set up following Gideon’s visit back home in 2012. There was no water to any houses during the first week of the trip, and over the past four years two high schools had gone without running water. Matthew had prepared himself for a culture shock when he arrived, but admits it was still over-

Just the poverty, people had very little. They had no possessions and it was very basic living. They had four walls and some of them had to share toilets which were piled up for weeks and weeks. It was horrendous conditions.” Twice water spewed out of the bores to scenes of jubilation from the villagers. “People were crying and singing. We had opening ceremonies for the bores and everyone was just dancing and singing, it was incredible. They couldn’t believe that we were putting our time into it and
how Nelsonsians had given their money to help them. They were very appreciative.” To fundraise for the venture, Water for Prosperity held Walk for Water, a 15km challenge from Richmond to Rabbit Island earlier this year. They also held a charity dinner at Trailways in a bid to make some last minute funds. Emirates came on board, donating return flights to the charity, and will do so again next year. “They’re just really happy with what we’re doing and are keen to help out. So as soon as we’ve raised enough money, which is $15,000, we’ll go again.”

New Show Home at 5 Fair On the Brightside Brightwater Community News
Andy McQueen Chairperson The Brightwater Community Association is seeking donations to fund the purchase of a portable speaker system. In our community there are many occasions especially during the warmer months of the year for public outdoor events which would benefit from having an outdoor portable speaker system. Examples are
Anzac Day ceremonies, school assemblies, fundraising fairs, prize givings, sports meetings and other cultural occasions. Therefore at the next meeting of the Brightwater Community Association at Brightwater School on Tuesday of November 5 at 7.45pm there will be a public demonstration of our proposed portable sound system and all residents of Brightwater and districts are cordially invited to
attend and see how good it will be. It is very disappointing to find that the lock on the community noticeboard in front of the Village Green has been vandalised, for the second time. If you want to put a notice of a community event on the noticeboard please enquire at the ScissorArt Hair Salon, Ellis Street,Brightwater, during business hours. TEDDIES: Johny West, Josh Richards, Olivia Shelling, and Ameera Woods of Brightwater School have been creating sleeping bags for their teddy bears as they prepare for the up coming three day Yr 3/4 camp at Teapot Valley Camp. The middle syndicate goes on camp biannually and the students are really excited to be able to take a sleeping companion from home along with them. The students chose their own material and had help from parents, grandmas and nanas to sew the sleeping bags up.

We’re just trying to teach the girls to take care of the environment for other generations to come. A Salisbury School teacher aide has been named school gardener of the year by magazine NZ Gardener, and she could claim the overall prize if the public vote falls her way. Carolyn Shirtliff, who has been a teacher aide at the school since the mid 90s, was quick to point out that there was also a grounds-man who looked after the garden, and that her nomination probably came from the horticulture work she does with the students. “I came from a family of gardeners, both my grandfathers were keen gardeners, and one of my grandparents actually had a farm next to the school. I’ve got an auntie who has been involved in retail gardening for 47 years so it definitely runs in the genes,” she says. Carolyn says gardening was a good skill for the

Stadium celebrates re-opening Sport Tasman is celebrating the re-opening of Saxton Stadium with a week of free activities for the community starting as of yesterday. Following the disastrous floods that hit the stadium on April 21, the complex was re-opened last week and Sport Tasman is passionate about getting the community back into the stadium. And to help make this happen it has come up with a full week of free activities to help entice the public in. “This initiative is about re-engaging our community with Saxton Stadium after it was closed for so long because of flood damage. It was great having the South Island Masters on last week and we believe this free week of activity will further build on the message that Saxton Stadium is back in business,” says Sport Tasman CEO Nigel Muir. “Summer is just around the corner and this is a great opportunity for people to get more active, more often,” he adds. The free week runs from Monday October 2125 and includes free court hire between 3-6pm. There’s also free super circuit classes and senior shape up classes from 9.15-10.15am, free senior walking group sessions from 10-11am, free core n floor and core balance classes and free indoor bowls, golf, volleyball and badminton sessions from 11-12noon. Also free table tennis 9am – 12noon. For a full timetable check out www.sporttasman.org.nz/ saxton_stadium or contact Sport Tasman at the Stadium on 538 0072.

Focus on Farming & RURAL LIFESTYLE BMTT are dedicated to providing top notch service to their customers. Their sales team will work with you to find the right agricultural machinery to suit your requirements. They sell a huge variety of top brand machinery and their after sales service is second to none. They realise that most breakdowns happen right in the middle of an important job and that’s why they offer a 24 hour callout service. It’s so important that often while BMTT manager, Terry Thompson, has been out and about enjoying his weekend, he’s dropped everything to help out his customers. Then he has to return home and explain to his long suffering wife why her car is now covered in dirt splashes and smelling of cow poo! To experience their dedication to great service call in and see the good buggers at BMTT. On Farm Agri Centre is a leading supplier of agricultural equipment and parts. Established in 2005 they have grown to be one of the best known agriculture suppliers in the region, designing, installing, supplying, maintaining and servicing milking machines, irrigation systems and agricultural machinery ranging from mowers through to chainsaws and ATVs. They only represent the leading brands, such as De Laval, to ensure that you obtain the best value over the lifetime of your purchase. Their team are dedicated to providing a complete, integrated sales and after sales parts and service package which will help to improve your productivity, give a better return on your investment and peace of mind through busy work periods. Ag Contractor Steve Sangster and his team are busy making hay while the sun shines – or to be more precise, baling and wrapping. Steve has been serving the local farming and agricultural community for many years, not only looking af-
ter baling, wrapping and haymaking but also groundwork, mowing, raking and pasture renewal. This year is Steve’s second season with his McHale Fusion baler and its efficiency means that he is able to work faster, reducing the amount of time spent on each job. Less time on each job reduces his production costs which, in turn, means his charge out rate per bale is significantly lower leaving more money in the farmer’s pocket. If you are looking for honest and friendly advice and a
dedicated, hardworking team, call Steve today. Nick Marer of the Little Pig Building Company believes that building or renovating a home should be a rewarding experience, both during the build and later, when the owners are enjoying their new life. “For most people it’s the biggest investment they will ever make; we do our best to make sure people get the home they have dreamed of, as well as a great return on their investment,” says Nick. The company has been building sustainable homes for over twenty years, so Nick is well-versed in the art of building with energy efficient sustainable materials. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a renovation or a new build – energy efficiency and sustainability can be built-in if you use the right materials and design,” says Nick. The Little Pig Building Company has its own standard plans, or can work with your architect’s plans, so Nick is a good person to talk to if you are not sure where to start. “We’ll work with your architect or ours to make sure the build goes smoothly.” Nick says he’s happy to build with timber, brick or straw – or any other suitable material. “We haven’t achieved anything yet”, says Tom Marshall after winning the most important game in Tasman Makos history. Never before have the Makos reached the ITM Cup Championship final, but this Friday night Trafalgar Park will host them and Hawke’s Bay as the two teams clash, hoping to win the title and the prize that comes with it – promotion to the premiership. Tom has played in the Under-20 World Cup final and in Super Rugby playoffs with the Crusaders, but this time he will be representing his hometown, playing for his friends and

his family. So it’s easy to understand why the nerves have come back before kickoff. “This is a different feeling. I was coming into last weekend’s game and I was a wee bit nervous, but I don’t usually get nervous before a game,” he says, in between signing autographs for his beloved fans at Blenheim’s Lansdowne Park. “I guess it’s because making the final is something Tasman has never done before and I really care about it. Come this weekend I’m sure there will be a few nerves amongst the team. Most of the boys have never been involved in finals footy before.” Thinking ahead to Friday, Tom says it will be “emotional” running out onto the ground where he’s had some very fond memories playing for Nelson, the Makos and Crusaders. “Growing up I always wanted to be a Tasman Mako and that’s the same for most of the boys. We play with our heart on our sleeve and that’s the special thing about this region.” Fighting for a place to compete in the Premiership standings, Tasman managed to knock off four teams from the above division this year, including semi-finalists Counties Manakau. Tasman were a staggering 16 points ahead of last weekend’s opponents Southland after the round robin, and with just two losses against their name, the Makos entered their playoff series knowing they had already beaten each of the other Championship semi-finalists. So it’s no surprise that Tom didn’t care who this weekend’s opposition was going to be after beating Southland 49-28. Tickets are already on sale for the game which kicks off at 7:35pm on Friday.
Sciatic Pain Sorted with Self-help Approach Sciatic pain can strike without warning. This deep, often severe, aching pain radiates into the leg from the back and can be very debilitating. Caused by pressure on nerve roots in the spine, often from a bulging disc, the pain can be unrelenting if not sorted quickly. Sometimes the pain is accompanied by tingling and numbness and occasionally with weakness in the leg or foot muscles. Often sciatica occurs in active people engaged in heavy occupations with farmers and builders regularly seeking treatment for this complaint. Equally, however, those that are more sedentary and sit frequently, such as truck drivers and office workers, are just as likely to develop this condition. Youth or age is no protection from this condition with our ever more sedentary youth now regularly experiencing both back pain and sciatica. The elderly too can experience sciatica but the greatest tendency for this condition occurs between 35 and 65 years of age. Sciatica may be preceded by back pain but it is possible to have leg symptoms with no
back pain at all. “Sciatic” pain can be felt in the groin or in the front, back or sides of the thigh or the calf or foot. What can be done about this painful condition? Firstly it is important to ascertain that the pain is indeed sciatica so effective and prompt treatment can be initiated. Consulting an expert in this field is the first step. Many people don’t immediately think of a physiotherapist being an expert in sciatica assessment and treatment but indeed the physiotherapists at Richmond Physiotherapy in Lower Queen Street Health are experts in assessing and treating this condition. They will take an in depth history and then do a thorough physical examination, finding movements and positions that alter and improve your pain. In rare cases, sciatica is serious and a referral will be arranged to a medical specialist in these instances but the staff at Richmond Physiotherapy Centre are well trained to spot these cases. All the therapists at Richmond Physiotherapy Centre are Credentialed in the
McKenzie Method, a very well researched approach to the assessment and treatment of back pain and sciatica that was developed by Robin McKenzie, a New Zealand physiotherapist from Wellington. Helen Macdonald holds a Diploma in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy, the highest qualification offered by the McKenzie Institute International. If you think you may be suffering with sciatica, mention this article when you phone Richmond Physiotherapy and for the month from 28th October, you will receive an upgrade on your first appointment to a “Specialist Consult” appointment, a saving of 33% on your fees. No referral is necessary. Check out the website www.richmondphysiotherapy.co.nz or phone 544 0327.

WTTU can’t seal the deal
With just first innings points up for grabs and the unavailability of rep players, it was a fairly disruptive start to the two-day cricket season. The headlining fixture of the first round of games was the clash between last year’s finalists Stoke-Nayland and Waimea Toi Toi United at the Marsden Rec. However, honours had to be shared as WTTU, who won the competition last year, declared at 2354 with Stoke-Nayland ending the day at 167-8 in reply. WTTU middle order batsman Mason Thelin was the star of the show on 123 not out off just 116 balls, which included 14 boundaries. It was Mason’s

Fishing with
Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club What a stunner of a weekend that has just gone. Warm beautiful sunny skies, albeit with a little wind thrown in for good measure. But don’t get too excited as the long range forecast includes some rain. I’m ever hopeful that it will be wrong but several websites are predicting showers and gusty winds for Labour Weekend. But get the boat fuelled up and ready just in case because you just never know this far out. The kayakers have informed me they have been catching gurnard, Kahawai and small snapper in and around Cable Bay, as well as Okiwi Bay. Flasher rigs from 2/0 up to 6/0 hooks with small bits of pillies have been doing the damage. As of Sunday the odd big fish has been caught in Tasman Bay but the water temperature is still a bit cool for them to come in yet and with a wet week ahead it will further slow them down. Recently some Dawnbreakers took part in the annual Nelson North Country Competition. Historically Dawn breakers have performed well in this event and this year turned out to be another success for members of the club. Team Atawhai consisting of Dan Fisher, Reid Forrest, and Aaron Quarterman won the Big Three comp. Dan said they had to bag a stag/boar/ snapper which they managed to just in time for the weigh in but it came with a large lack of sleep and a lot of miles covered over the 3 days of the hunt. Dan Fisher caught the snapper on board his boat (Tight Lines) on a slow jig out in the deep in Tasman Bay. They all said it was a neat comp and would be looking forward to it again next year. On Sunday the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club had their first club social day held at The Tasman Bay Cruising Club. As an example of how the club helps its members, we are actively promoting safety on the wa-

We believe that everyone that owns a watercraft would be safer having done the course. We have also organised weekends away as well as day trips on the club calendar. We also have regular guest speakers on a variety of topics every month. Our guest speaker this month from MPI Fisheries (MAF) was able to go through the ins and outs of the rules regarding catching cod in the Marlborough Sounds, size/ bag limits on finfish, and the laws on the use of longlines. It was very informative and enabled members to have points clarified that they were not sure about. For example did you know that no person may use or be in possession of more than one line (other than handlines or rod and reel lines). All surface floats attached to any line must be marked with the fisher’s initials and surname. A phone number is also useful. No person may use or possess a line with more than 25 hooks. Where more than one person is using a line from a vessel (other than handlines or rod and reel lines), no more than two lines (other than handlines or rod and reel lines) may be used, set from or possessed on board that vessel. To join or find out more about the club, email us at dawnbreakersfc@gmail.com.

Insurance risk article May 30, 2011 may bring law suit The following is a paid advertisement by Fluecube inventor Neville D’Herville. When Nelson out-lawed 10 year old wood burners claims were being made about a clean air wood burners. I wrote to the Nelson City Council to say I will prove that lab tested wood burners cannot solve pollution as atmospheric conditions affects all wood burners. In our research behind lab testing, Bobby Fisher revolutionised the double burner but lost control to 100,000 manufacturers copying his design. In Oregon three large steel manufacturers introduced the condor lab, the reason behind it was to single out the small players in the market as well as make claims it solves pollution. But the results did not satisfy the government for them to legislate real field testing for 75% of the manufacturers to go bankrupt. The 25% that survived were three steel manufacturers from Oregon as they were pre warned by their pet politician. For their survival of the industry the manufacturers formed the HPBA to lobby the government to drop field testing. Australia was told to adopt America’s clean air policy and the wood burner manufacturers formed the AHHA and for years carried out their own testing using the condor system with no requirement to test in the field. NZ joined Australia and adopted the standard of lab testing. So the big boys have a “closed shop” linking the HPBA, AHHA and NZHHA that blocks any one that criticizes the lab testing. The ministry hides behind a known flawed standard that protects the manufacturer and totally misleads the public, in my opinion. John Todd, the man who set up the adopted standards in Australia, was later employed by the government for five years to test the approved wood burners in the field. His findings were that there was not one approved wood burner was under 10 times the lab results. So they all fail the real test. Atmospheric winter conditions affects all wood burners and it is totally ignored in the standard set up by the manufacturers. It is part of the installer’s job to solve the problems of why the fire does not burn or smoke in the room. It is called down draft, “not our problem” say the manufacturers. The reason why flue caps are not tested in the AUS/NZ standards, but say they can fix a fire after it has been passed in the lab, is to shut you up, pointed
out by our manufacturer. I believe the manufacturers like the law as it is because they do not want field testing as they would all fail and the government use this knowledge to manipulate their own energy policies, so do deals with the AHHA telling them where they can sell wood burners in their towns. Wood burners are tested in optimum conditions so they achieve maximum temperature in the lab. There is nothing wrong with the test but the results cannot be used as they are out of context once the wood burner is installed. In John Todd’s own words the law is flawed but the government do nothing about it. The AUS/NZ standards do not ask for flue caps to be tested yet they make claims that the Fluecube has to be tested, yet not every flue cap on the market has been asked to be tested. So why do they single out the flue cap designed in Nelson? I believe the reason is that we solved most problems with atmospheric conditions in winter but it contradicts the standard of testing and we prove the public are being misled by a flawed standard. We have proved this on over 2000 wood burners around
NZ as well proving it around the world. Like a rottweiler, the ministry and NCC set out to get me. We’ve had every dirty trick in the book thrown at us from changing the inventors name on the world patent application (in the nick of time we changed patent attorneys). A Nelson councillor on TV3 said our flue cap could be dangerous if it has not been tested and our flue cap is an insurance risk. TDC and Nelson City Council tells the consumer it has to be tested when no other flue cap is asked to be tested. So, in spite of all the dirty tactics, I stayed focused on achieving world patents. Suitable manufacturers prove to the consumer we do better with thousands of consumers having a more pleasant atmosphere in the home, solving smoke in the room problems, saving fuel, most of all lowering pollution in their towns. It’s now used on many new and older wood burners, proving that we are doing better. That has antagonised the ministry, setting the ‘rottweiler’ on me, going around the country and Australia to block our product. We can write a book on the dirty tactics but I was one jump ahead, I took my product overseas to do real test-

“What a fantastic product. Instead of removing older fires just imagine what could be saved by using this product. Even new fires that are supposed to comply with the regulations. Who wants to go gas or heat pump and if you have a wetback even more savings with less pollution?” R. Jackson, Blenheim. “This looks like a wonderful solution to air pollution and also dust inside the home. I was just wondering if anything like this was on the market and voila! A great idea. There has been a lot of talk lately about air pollution from wood burners in the Auckland area, but there’s nothing like a fire in the winter for comfort and heat. I think this is a great compromise.” J. Cunningham, Auckland. “Working well, no more smoke in our house and the the fire is a lot hotter.” andy124 - Trademe “Thank-you, works far better than old cowl cap.” math-nz - Trademe “Since you installed a FlueCube on my chimney the warm early winter has meant that I have not had my fire on as early as normal. However, with several miserable days and cool evenings in early June I have put it on often enough to assess the affect of the new device. The fire is certainly burning more fiercely than before, and as far as I can see I am using less wood than previously. The ash does not appear to be building up so rapidly as I have not had to clean it out in the past three weeks. The heat is such that my hot-water system is piping hot next morning after an evening fire. I asked my neighbours to advise me of the smoke from the chimney which is about 40ft from their house. They say they can see the heat shimmer round the chimney, but once the fire is well alight there is virtually no sign of smoke. I am well satisfied, thankyou, with the improvements the FlueCube has produced.” A Barclay, Tasman
