Maling slams TDC over ‘cock-ups’ Tasman mayoral candidate Kit Maling has fired the first shots in this year’s council election campaign, saying there has been no accountability for a series of bad decisions that have wasted millions of dollars under mayor Richard Kempthorne’s leadership. Kit made the allegations this week after obtaining information

from council under the Official Simon Bloomberg Information Act that showed it Reporter Senior reporter had spent $2.7million on resolvsimon@waimeaweekly.co.nz ing a dispute about coastal erosion with a property owner at ment. Jackett Island. He also criticised “There have been three key cockRichard and council for wasting ups while Richard’s been mayor $1.3million on a Lower Queen St which have cost the ratepayers of land deal with developers VCPL Tasman millions,” Kit says. “It’s and a $500,000 overspend on the poor leadership and no one has council’s Mapua Shed 4 develop- been held accountable and, other

than Mapua, no one has ever said sorry.” However, Richard disputes Kit’s claims saying council has done everything right. He says council had to pay out in the Jackett Island dispute and VCPL land deal because of court rulings while the only mistake council made in the Mapua Wharf development was failing to report the overspend

earlier. “Council has achieved a lot of good things but we continually have issues that sometimes don’t go as you expect and Jackett Island was one of those. But we’ve finally got to the end of it and the court has found that council is not going to be responsible for

Nelson Vintage Car Club members seldom need an excuse to get their pride and joys out of the garage and go for a spin but this week they had an extra good reason to cruise the streets of Nelson as they joined around 500 volunteers helping out with Daffodil Day. Volunteers have already been busy picking and bunching thousands of daffodils and the first deliveries started on Tuesday when seven members of the Nelson Vintage Car Club drove volunteers around the region in style to deliver pre-ordered flowers to businesses. It is the first time that the club has been

involved in the Cancer Society’s biggest fundraiser of the year and club member Trevor Evans says they are delighted to be able to help. “It started off with the Timaru Vintage Car Club challenging all vintage car clubs around the country to help out with Daffodil Day,” Trevor says. “We asked our members if they’d help and we got an overwhelming response - we could have had a lot more cars and drivers but they only needed seven.” Trevor, who drove his 1966 Mark 3 Zephyr on Tuesday’s delivery run, says “it’s such a good cause and it means a lot to me”. “I got cancer four years ago and the support I got, and my family got, from the Cancer Society was amazing. Light at end of tunnel closure One of the Tasman Great Taste Trail’s most popular attractions will soon be reopened for cyclists and walkers after the Tasman District Council agreed to repair damage at the entrance of the Spooner’s Tunnel. The 1.35km former railway tunnel, about 30km south of Richmond, was closed in July after a routine structural inspection identified movement in a small crack at the northern entrance. The tunnel had only been opened as part of the cycle trail in April this year but had proven to be a big hit with riders and walkers before it was closed. However, council has been investigating ways to strengthen the entrance in consultation with specialist engineers and Heritage New Zealand and this week announced it would soon be reopened. Council acting engineering services manager Dwayne Fletcher says a temporary bracing structure will be installed at the northern entrance to the tunnel within the next month, allowing the popular cycling and walking route to reopen to the public. “A steel frame will be erect-

Fiona Thompson and David Vanstone at the entrance to the Spooner’s Tunnel during its official opening and public ride in April. Photo: Jessie Johnston. ed at the tunnel entrance to brace the northern entrance,” Dwayne says. “This will allow continued safe use of the tunnel by the public for as long as it takes to design and build long-term reinforcement.” Dwayne says it was a “shame” that the tunnel had to be closed so soon after it was officially reopened but “we were not willing to take any risks with people’s safety”. “With a structure of this age, it’s inevitable there will be occasional repairs and maintenance needed, and that’s why

we have been carrying out a very rigorous inspection regime. It was one of those regular checks that identified the issue and allowed us to move swiftly to ensure there was no risk to the public.” Dwayne says council will seek funding from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to help cover the emergency repairs. There was more good news for supporters and users of the Tasman Great taste Trail last week when council approved extra spending for “critical current work” estimated to cost $445,000. The work, which includes construction of the sections from Wai-iti Domain to Quail Valley Rd and Spooner’s Tunnel to Norris Gully, exceeded the budget by $110,000. Transportation manager Jamie McPherson stated in his report to council that a failure to complete the work could stall the project, increasing costs and jeopardising council’s eligibility criteria for third party funding. Jamie says there is a good prospect of securing matching third party funding once the work was completed.

Nelson mini is world’s fastest Brittany Spencer Reporter

reporter@nelsonlive.co.nz

After breaking two land speed records and roaring across Bonneville faster than you can say ‘1964 Mini Cooper S’, the predominantly Nelsonian racing team are returning home with salt fever. The team of eight, co-founded by Nelson race car mechanic Garry Orton, spent last week racing a classic 52-year-old Mini Cooper S across the salt flats at the Bonneville Speed Week in Utah. The week brings thousands of car enthusiasts together around one common goal: to go as fast as possible and the endless salt flats provide the perfect setting to set new records. And that’s just what the kiwi team did, reaching a top speed of 166mph and breaking two world land speed records. The first record was set during tuning runs in the I/BGALT class, where the mini smashed the 133.896mph (215.485kph) record, speeding down the track at 144.033mph (231.799kph). The team then switched classes to I/ BFALT - a change from petrol to methanol, and on a tuning run for methanol broke the 140.458mph (226.045kph) class record with a speed of 158.039mph (254.339kph). They were unable to back this up due to a hose fault on their next run. Once the problem was solved

The team with their record-setting Mini, from left; Garry Orton, Teena Larsen, Maurice Larsen, Anita Hulme, Bryan Hartley, Shane Nicholson, Nelson Hartley, Graham Wilson, Aaron Hartley and Mike Wilson. Photo: www.project64mini. com. they went out again and qualified at 153.710mph (247.372kph), and backed it up the next morning for a record result of 156.006mph (251.067kph). Team member Mike Wilson says that, despite being a bunch of lowkey kiwi blokes, the team were ecstatic when they set the new records. “I remember after the first one, Aaron, who’s the token American in the team, jumped out of his pick-up truck, put his arms in the air and shouted the speed to the world, but there were only a couple of us who understood why he was doing it, everyone was very

excited.” On the third record attempt, in the I/BFCC class, the car once again blitzed the qualifying run, reaching an incredible 166.046mph (267.225kph). But after a week of racing, an engine part failed on the second run, the car lost oil pressure early on and only reached 144mph before having to pull off the track. “It’s disappointing not to get the third record,” says Mike. “But we did get it up to 166mph which is, as far as we know, the fastest a mini with an original motor has ever gone.” Mike says the shock on people’s

faces when they see a 35 horsepower engine put out 370-400 horsepower is priceless. “Everyone comes up and asks about the mini, you don’t really see them here so they all want to know how fast we’re going and when we say ‘166mph’ they just stop dead, they have nothing to say, their jaws drop and then they say ‘I was expecting something like 120mph at the most’.” With a bit of Burt Munroe kiwi ingenuity, the team have managed to take an old mini and transform it into a speed machine. “The motor was designed in the 1950s, we’ve changed it by using a BMW mo-

torcycle engine head but even that is 30 years old, none of it is designed for this, but the combination of parts and the brilliance of the engineers on the team has lead to these huge record margins,” says Mike. Mike says the team might get back to Bonneville in 2018 with something a bit different, but that’s all under wraps. “When we first went in 2012 the idea was that we were ticking something off the bucket list, but everyone in Bonneville said, ‘nah, you’re gonna get salt fever, you’re going to want to go back’, and they were right.”

Maling slams TDC FROM PAGE 1 paying the long-term maintenance so the costs stopped - it was regrettable that the costs built up but we did have to follow the court processes.” Kit also claims a lack of accountability and transparency suggests Richard is more interested in protecting council staff than looking after ratepayers. He also criticised council’s involvement in commercial activities like Shed 4 when it should be focusing on core activities. “I was in Motueka last week talking to residents who are getting flooded in their homes every time there’s a bit of heavy rain. How can council spend money on commercial buildings and then tell people they don’t have enough money to fix flooding - it’s wrong and it’s an indictment on every councillor who has been there this term.” But Richard says he is “always working in the best interest of our ratepayers” and says “Kit needs to focus on the main issues”. He says the council is performing well in key areas and has achieved the big goals of reducing [forecast] debt and cutting rates increases under his leadership. Richard says councillors also need to trust staff to do their job unless “there is a pattern of ongoing errors and that’s not tolerated”. “If staff are always concerned they might get criticised for something that goes wrong then they become very cautious and don’t make good decisions. We want our staff to make the best decisions they can even if that means taking a risk.” The election will be held on October 8.

BUSINESS COMPETITION: Waimea College’s, from left, Alex Winch, Zach Irain, Alana Stilborn and Neve Williams at the final of the University of Auckland Management Consulting Club national secondary schools’ business case competition in Auckland. Waimea was the only South Island school at the competition.

Simon Bloomberg A team of Waimea College students showed they have the right stuff to succeed in the business world after qualifying for an elite national secondary schools’ business studies competition. Waimea College was the only South Island school to make the final of the University of Auckland Management Consulting Club national secondary schools’ business case competition held at the university earlier this month. The five finalists had to apply business and economic theories to a real-life business scenario while working tight deadlines - the other finalists were Scots College, Macleans College, St Kentigern College and Auckland International College. Although Waimea’s Neve Williams, Alana Stilborn, Alex Winch and Zach Irain did not win the final, their business studies teacher Naomi Chapman says just making the final was an outstanding achievement. The fifth team-member, Greg Stevenson, was unable to attend the final. “I am very proud of them,” Naomi says. “They were competing against students from some of the best schools in the country, so it was a wonderful achievement.” Naomi says Waimea was selected for the final after the team submitted a video presentation of a business case study they had to complete from August 1-5. The students had to identify critical issues facing the business and provide a strategic recommendation for business success. In the final, they had just three hours to analyse, discuss and prepare a ten minute presentation of the issues identified in a business case study. The presentation was followed by a five minute question and answer with the judges from the University of Auckland. “The entire process was hugely beneficial for the students,” Naomi says. “The judges commended them on how well they worked as a team and, in particular, their ability to communicate with each other.” Neve says “the knowledge we gained will enable us as individuals and as students at school, to thrive in a business environment” while Alana says the experience was “beneficial in so many ways”. Maclean’s College of Auckland won the final.

Ethan earns Wairua Warrior double Jacob Page The best way to train for the Wairua Warrior is to train on a children’s playground, according to winner Ethan Helliwell. The 25-year-old won the first ever winter version of the 10.5km obstacle race near Cable Bay, on Saturday. He completed the course, which included balance beams, monkey bars, sandbag carries and muddy rope climbs, in one hour and two minutes - more than five minutes ahead of his nearest challenger. Ethan won the annual summer event earlier in the year and will now set his sights on a first Coast to Coast single day effort early next year. “Jumping in the river was a big shock to the system, the cold air on your lungs and the ice on the balancing stages made it very tricky, on top of there being more mud.” Ethan says he’s been running 40km a week in preparation for the event, but battled the flu last week. “To be honest, the best training you can do would be if you found a school with a decent playground. “They have the monkey bars and tyres and everything you can have a play on. “I’m fortunate I have mates who are keen to go and play around on playgrounds and go train in the bush.” Nelson MMA fighter Dawn Chalmers credited her training for making the course manageable on her way to victory in the women’s event in a time of one hour and 24 minutes and 58 seconds.

Former Waimea College student Katy Cobb is battling cancer, but a group of former schoolmates are raising money to help fund her treatment.

Locals rally to help ex-schoolmate A group of locals are rallying to raise money for a former Waimea College student who is battling cancer. Katy Cobb (nee Delaney), 31, was first diagnosed with cervical cancer in March 2015 after experiencing symptoms for a number of weeks. Her intuition told her it was something severe, and sure enough she was told that she had a 5cm tumour on her cervix. After undergoing an aggressive combination of chemotherapy and radiation, the cancer remained, so Katy and her long-time Australian partner Cobby decided to go ahead with their already delayed wedding plans, and were married in January this year at their home in Mossman, Queensland. The wedding had already been delayed after Cobby suffered a life-changing stroke two years previous. Katy continued receiving treatment in Brisbane where her immediate family reside, but it is believed that the radiation damage that she suffered has become a barrier for any more chemotherapy or natural treatments to succeed. Surgery is out of the question as her cancer has now spread to her groin lymph node. Katy spent every waking minute researching her limited options and located a sen-

ior oncologist at a clinic in Germany who believes her best chance for survival is Hyperthermia, which will try to overcome the radiation damage to allow the chemotherapy to work. The treatment is $17,000 plus travel expenses for herself and her brother to get to Germany. Katy’s Nelson friends and family are organizing a quiz night to help raise money for her treatment and travel. Sebina Bastion, Joanne Rawson, Lucy Ashton and Marianne Hart-Biggs have been hard at work rallying support via donations for a silent auction in the hope of raising as much money as they can. The quiz will be held at the Hope Recreational Hall on Saturday, September 17 from 7pm. Tasman Auto Electrics are donating a signed warriors jersey for the silent auction, Reid Helicopters, together with Tall Poppy Real Estate, have donated a helicopter lunch flight to Awaroa, and Air Chathams have donated a “once in a lifetime” trip for two on their DC-3 aircraft. If you would like to book a table at the event, or if you wish to donate something to this very worthy cause then please email Marianne Hart-Biggs on blackcabnelson@ gmail.com or call her on 021-1104078.

Hip hop dance champs come to Nelson

HIP-HOPPERS: Cru-z dance crew from Mad Beats Hip Hop is amongst those taking part in the championships. They are from left, Rohan Holmes, Oliver Ashton, Coen Williams, Cameron Harding, Jordan Regenvanu and Campbell McManaway. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Jessie Johnston Around 200 dancers from all over the country will be heading to Nelson College this weekend to show off their moves in the Shakedown Hip Hop Dance Champs. “It was set up because all of our kids were travelling away to competitions in Auckland and there were limited competitions in the South Island for them, so we thought if we set something up in Nelson that our kids can do as well as travelling away, it gives them options,” says event organiser, Gemma Laing. “It’s also an option for other South Island teams.” Around two years ago the competition was opened up to North Island dancers as well, and now people come from all over the country to dance in the championships. The event, which will be held this Saturday, August 27, features two sessions, solo acts and smaller crews competing in the afternoon, while the larger crews will take to the stage in the evening. There will also be a special performance by members of Identity Dance Crew, including two dancers who were part of the Bradas crew that recently won the world hip hop champs in Las Vegas. Gemma says people are welcome to come and watch the event on Saturday, tickets ranging from $5 for children up to $10 for adults. The afternoon competition will start at 2pm, while the evening event will get going at 6:30pm. Identity Dance Crew will also be running workshops for keen dancers throughout the weekend and will be doing a meet and greet at the Richmond Mall from 4pm on Friday. Tickets can be purchased from the Richmond Mall information desk and there will be door sales on the day. For more information on workshops or the competition programme, visit the website at www.shakedowndc.co.nz. Gemma would also like to thank the Richmond Mall for making it possible to have the members of Identity present at the championships.

Modern service with traditional dignity

Dun track can’t be fully restored: The disregard for this historic site is disgusting. Kevin O’Connor. The sequence of events leading up to this was predicted long before work started on the pest fence. In 1913, NCC, in accepting a gift of some 2,500 acres by Thomas Cawthron, agreed to make the reserve more accessible by maintaining and improving the Dun Mountain trail. This heritage trail was built during the American Civil War and has served us well for over 150 years. Its present state is an outrage and a slap in the face of Thomas Cawthron. Rather than attempting to gloss this over with irrelevances about “occasional vehicle access users,” the Trust’s officers - whose flagrant abuse of the Consent’s insistence on 50-metres of separation between fence construction and the DMT has utterly vandalised 150-year-old retaining walls on the DMT - should be seeking to explain how the Trust is going to repair and restore the DMT to as near as pos-

sible to its pre-slip state. Jim Cable. Tahunanui Trampoline Park: This would be fantastic for Nelson! Year round fun for kids. Victoria Thomas Ashcroft. Awesome idea! Hope it gets the green light! Angeline Johnston. We went to bounce last year on the Gold Coast, awesome fun for kids and adults. Take along your best energy - at my age, an hour of that exercise is an insanely long time! Awesome fun, can’t wait. David Reddecliffe. Great move for Nelson!! Paula Fearnley. Puts new meaning to bouncing off the walls. Gary Bulow. Payton’s 16 open heart surgeries: Such a strong family. Keep up the good work, Peyton. Jody Wilson. Total trouper! You all are. Fiona Harris. Wow, that brave wee girl! Bonnie Adams. How safe is our water? How safe is our water in Tasman? There is no issue more fundamental to human health than wa-

ter quality. Last week, a gastro outbreak in Havelock North affected more than 4000 people (tests confirmed campylobacter in the water supply). Could the same ever happen in Tasman? Worryingly, last week the Tasman District Council failed to endorse a process to end its piecemeal approach to water quality and flood management issues in the Richmond catchment. The full council rejected releasing the report for public consultation. Nitrate levels in Tasman are among the highest in the country. A total population of 16,121 people in New Zealand live with high nitrate levels in their drinking water. Richmond accounts for over half of these people [10,500 people based on figures from Source Water Information New Zealand]. This is an alarming statistic, given that excess nitrate levels in drinking water are linked with Methaemoglobinaemia (‘blue baby syndrome’: a blood disease in infants), and can be harmful for pregnant women. The health of its community should always be on the Council agenda. What happens in the community affects how efficiently the hospital board operates, and vice versa. Let’s hope that this local elections we vote in a council that is willing to put the health and wellbeing of the community on the Council agenda. Dana Wensley, TDC candidate. Nelson Vietnam veterans who commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village last Thursday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

RSA remembers Vietnam battle Simon Bloomberg Nelson's Vietnam veterans paid their respects to the New Zealanders and Australians involved in one of the biggest engagements of the Vietnam War at a commemoration service at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village in Stoke. The Battle of Long Tan was fought in horrendous conditions in a rubber plantation near Phuoc Tuy Province in South Vietnam, on August 18, 1966. The Royal New Zealand Artillery's 161st Battery fired the guns in the battle that helped save three platoons of Australian soldiers - 18 Australians were killed and 24 wounded, while at least 245 Viet Cong were killed in the fierce fighting. Last Thursday, 15 of Nelson and Tasman's Vietnam veterans marked the 50th anniversary of the battle in a solemn service at Ernest Rutherford. Although none of the veterans were involved in Long Tan, former 161st Battery member Neville Manins says "we were

certainly made aware of what our guys had done there" when he served in Vietnam. "The battle was quite early in the piece, so I missed it," Neville says. "I was over there from 1968 to 1969, but there was still a lot of pride in the Battery's role at Long Tan - they fired all the shells that saved the Aussies." Neville says the 161st Battery's role at Long Tan was recognised when it received the South Vietnamese Presidential Unit Citation of The Cross of Gallantry With Palm Leaf and the US Presidential Unit Citation Award. Ernest Rutherford resident and Vietnam veteran Rusty Taylor, who helped organise the commemoration, says New Zealand's part in Long Tan is widely recognised in Australia. "I was New Zealand's instructor at the Australian Royal Military College at Duntroon at the time, so I had definitely heard all about Long Tan," Rusty says. "It was a fierce battle with hand-to-hand fighting and it saved our base at Nui

Dat." Australian veteran and Nelson RSA member, Kiwi Sturges, says the Battle of Long Tan epitomised the ANZAC spirit that exists between Australia and New Zealand soldiers. "It wasn't spoken about too much but it was typical of the Australian and New Zealand comradeship," Kiwi says. "You don't want to glorify war, but there was a lot of pride in the way we worked together to win the battle." One of Nelson's highest ranking returned servicemen, Colonel Ken Fenton, who was commander of New Zealand's V Force from 1968-1970, says the Battle of Long Tan was the last "big engagement in combat" involving New Zealand soldiers. Nelson RSA president and Vietnam representative Barry Pont says he is delighted the sacrifices of the servicemen involved in the battle have been recognised. He says the 50th anniversary of Long Tan was also commemorated in Wellington, Canberra and South Vietnam.

Focus - Fresh Approach - Community Involvement

U • I am the Managing Director of MediMax Ambulance Services and have long worked in the caring professions as both Intensive Care Paramedic and a Registered Nurse.

U • I am standing under the

“Refresh Tasman” banner. After nine years it is time for a new Mayor to take Tasman forward whilst at the same time respecting and protecting our district’s many treasures.

U • Listen to the voices of the community. U • Strong leadership and financial acumen. U • I am the only Mayoral candidate who does not support the

Lee Valley Dam. We need to live within our means and this dam is simply too big and too expensive and there is little support for it to be built. The proposed dam will not pipe water to your home, it is only to be released into the river and 90% of it will go straight to the sea. Every $10 million we are in debt translates to a 1% increase in our rates - conservatively the dam will cost us $28 million. In reality it will likely be double that amount. More affordable options: encourage water conservation, collect rain water off roofs, network on in-ground reservoirs, series of weirs on the river.

U • The Queen Street upgrade will not in any way benefit the residents of Motueka, Mapua, Golden Bay and Murchison but it will affect their rates. Consider the cost overruns at Richmond Water Treatment Plant and in Mapua – we cannot afford that to happen again on other projects.

Rabbit Island must be protected. It is a gem that must remain for our children and grandchildren to enjoy.

Velden and Jen Chaddock, to pick up as many ideas as possible. The couple met online after being part of the same Facebook page, Chloe living here in Nelson while Chereez was in South Africa. “Chloe posted something one day and I invited her to be friends, we started talking and that’s it,” says Chereez. They didn’t meet in person until six months later. “I flew to South Africa,” says Chloe. “We were just friends then but we did have feelings for each other, so we wanted to meet each other first and see how it went from there.”

Chereez now lives here permanently after the pair decided to tie the knot. “I did a treasure hunt type thing around the house and then, at the end there was champagne and everything, and I had this big speech planned - which didn’t happen,” says Chloe. “She just said, ‘you know that I love you, right,’ and I said ‘yeah’ then she reached for the ring and asked, ‘will you marry me’,” says Chereez. The show was also about supporting the community, with proceeds going to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.

Netball boss to Big Brothers Big Sisters

2016 Ltd

oiL & FiLter changes

$75 From

Nelson Netball manager Chelsea Routhan will leave her role in September to take up a new job as manager of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Photo: Andrew Board. Andrew Board Chelsea Routhan’s stray finger has cost Nelson Netball its manager. Chelsea has been the centre manager at Nelson Netball for three years and says she “loves her job”. But when she inadvertently touched the wrong button while searching TradeMe she found an advert for her new job – programme director of Big Brothers Big Sisters. She says the role struck her as an exciting challenge, so she decided to apply.

“It was a really tough decision because I love my job and I’ve really enjoyed it. But when I saw this opportunity I thought ‘how can I not?’” During Chelsea’s tenure, player numbers have increased in both senior and junior grades, and in early September Nelson will host its first ever netball test match when the Silver Ferns host Jamaica. Nelson Netball’s board chair, Julie Baxendine, says they will be sad to see Chelsea go. “The board are extremely grateful to Chelsea for all that she has done to lift the profile

and performance of Nelson Netball in the two to three years she has been in this role. No one could question Chelsea’s passion, drive and hard work and these are the hallmarks of her style and delivery.” Chelsea says a focus of her new role will be continuing the good work done by out-going manager Rachel Saunders, while trying to grow the newlyestablished Motueka branch. Chelsea’s last day at Nelson Netball is its finals day, September 17, and she will start with Big Brothers Big Sisters on September 19.

Fire volunteers recognised

Simon Bloomberg

The dedication of rural fire fighters around the Nelson-Tasman region was recognised at the annual Waimea Rural Fire Authority awards held at Seifried Estate. Every year, 130 volunteer fire fighters belonging to nine rural fire forces in Nelson and Tasman spend thousands of hours training, fighting vegetation fires and attending vehicle accidents. Last Friday, the Waimea Rural Fire Authority, which oversees the region’s rural fire forces, paid tribute to the significant contribution the volunteers make to their communities. And it was no surprise that the major awards went to Glen-Hira volunteer Ian Thomas and Colin Eggers of the Tasman VRFF. Ian was named VRFF Member of the Year while Colin received the Significant Contribution Award. Ian received his award for his work on the force’s new smoke-chaser

which his nomination stated went “far beyond what would be expected of the average volunteer with much of his work carried out at his own personal expense”. A smoke-chaser is a first response vehicle that carries a small crew and is fitted out with a water tank, hoses and hand tools that allows it go to places that are inaccessible to larger fire trucks. “I dread to think how many hours I spent on it,” Ian says. “We did the first design concept back in December and we finished it in June and there were a lot of hours in-between. “It’s critical for getting a crew to a fire or a accident. It’s designed for getting up tracks where the tanker might not be able to go and it can be driven by anyone with a car license which is a big advantage - you need a heavy trade licence for a tanker.” Ian says the new Toyota Hilux was fitted with a 500 litre water tank, a hose reel, pump and locker for firefighting equipment. It was subsidised by the Rural Fire Network and Vote Gibbs for TDC

Colin’s wife Jeanette was also given a special mention for helping establish Tasman VRFF as a non-profit trust. They can be very proud of what they do and the service they provide - we’d be stuffed without them.” The awards were attended by about 150 people including Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne and deputy mayor Tim King who is the chair of the Waimea Rural Fire Authority.

Appleby’s Ken Connor won the Training Award, Harry Faber of Brightwater won the Health and Safety Award, Lakes VRFF received the Community Engagement Award and Tasman VRFF was commended for its administration. Vast Dance Festival celebrates five years

Jessie Johnston Vast Dance Festival is an annual celebration of secondary school dance that is about to see its fifth birthday. The event gives students from colleges in Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough and the West Coast, the opportunity to showcase pieces they have choreographed and performed for NCEA assessment. This year, seven schools will be participating in the festival including Motueka High, Waimea College, Garin College, Nayland College, Nelson College for Girls, Nelson College and Greymouth High. Each school has the chance to submit three dances of any genre which will be performed at the Theatre Royal. Although not a competitive event, when students experience theatre conditions, “it really raises the bar of their performances,” says Waimea College teacher, Mel Stewart. Set to be held on Wednesday, August 31, the festival will also include workshops for students to take part in when they are not rehearsing. The musical theatre and salsa sessions will be led by local teachers, Okiwi Hawkins and Neil Robinson, while the contemporary dance workshop will be taken by Joash Tuugamusu, from Black Grace Dance Co, based in Auckland. “Students love the opportunity to perform on the Theatre Royal stage in front of an audience, under theatre lighting,” says Mel. “Some students will not have performed on this stage before and this, coupled with the professionally run workshops, makes the festival a great opportunity for students to grow in skills and confidence.” This year the festival will also be operated by a student crew, including stage management, sound and lighting. The day culminates in a gala performance for the public at 7pm, doors opening at 6:30pm, with tickets available through the Theatre Royal website, theatreroyalnelson.co.nz

water Community (NZ). This is a closed group and you need to be a member to comment. If you have not joined, you can apply. It is a wonderful facility to keep abreast of what is going on in your community. Several residents have begun discussing forming a Farmers’ Market. It is initiatives like these that strengthen our community. Are you a member of Neighbourhood Support - the name says it all. If you are, congratulations. If not, you could consider forming a group with near neighbours. Details can be obtained from the Co-ordinator: Marty Price,

Recent activity on Facebook indicates that we have many community minded residents keen to put their ideas forward. A query regarding what residents would like to see on the Village Green helps to guide future development. A query about what residents would like if a video were to be made promoting Brightwater has brought a very positive response from many people. If you have any contributions to make you can post them on Bright-

on 544 1365, or email nsupport. waimea@outlook.com His office is based at Richmond Police Station and he is based there on Mondays and Tuesdays. The Brightwater Community Association is involved in a number of initiatives regarding road safety in the vicinity of Brightwater School and road signage placement to indicate turnoff to Lord Rutherford Park. The Ellis Street/ Waimea West/Lord Rutherford/ Bryant Road intersection continues to be a source of concern. Truck/trailer units are unable to negotiate the corner and remain within their correct lane. Reme-

dial work requires co-ordination with a number of groups and each cannot work until another has done their part. These bodies each have their own priorities, budgetary limitations etc and it is a matter of working with them to achieve positive outcomes We are still hopeful of progress on the car park behind the Village Green, but the initial completion date of prior to Christmas seems unlikely. Progress is being made on an upgrade to the Anzac Memorial to ensure that all the names of all soldiers from our district who fell in both World Wars are in-

cluded. A local company has made a generous offer of support to the community and the association is pursuing this in the hope of having a centrally placed defibrillator available for emergencies Councillor Brian Ensor is stepping down as a councillor for TDC this election. The Brightwater Community Association recognises the valuable contribution that Brian has made over many years and the manner in which he facilitated the aims of the Association. We wish Brian a happy retirement in Golden Bay.

Wakefield welcomes new cop Jamie White may be new to the Wakefield police station but he’s certainly not a new face in town. Jamie has been with the police around five years now, most of his career spent working in Nelson and Richmond, however, its rural policing that has always been his goal. Whenever the opportunity arose to do relief work in other areas, Jamie was keen for the position, building up experience in rural towns including Murchison and Haast, in order to apply for a position in Wakefield. “It might sound a little cheesy but I’d always wanted to do [police work] ever since I was a young kid, especially after growing up and seeing the local cops here, Peter Cobbledick was always one and Peter Carmody was another,” says Jamie. “You never think that it’s actually going to happen but I left school and did a bit of travelling, came back and studied for a little while and then was quite tempted to give it a crack. One of the local policemen here at the time, paid me a visit and encouraged me to get involved, so I applied and got in.” Jamie, who started at the Wakefield station last week, says he not only enjoys the variety of the job but the chance to work with people too. “The thing I like about coming into rural policing is you have a bit more of an opportunity to get to know a com-

While there are a number of challenges that come with police work, Jamie says one big one

when working in a rural setting can be isolation, which is why it’s great to have a huge amount of support from the Richmond, Nelson and Murchison officers. Outside of the station, Jamie has a lot of involvement within his church and is a youth group leader alongside his wife Leah, who works as a nurse in Nelson Hospital’s ED. He also loves playing sport, hunting and getting into the outdoors. Jamie is now looking forward to working alongside fellow Wakefield officer, Peter Jackson, to create and maintain a safe community through prevention-based policing and build relationships with those who call the area home.

St Arnaud hosts Wily Weka Simon Bloomberg Country Players members, Shaun Lines as Captain Hook and Hana Sinclair as Peter Pan, look forward to delighting audiences with their take on the family favourite.

Country Players Inc Wakefield is proud to present their upcoming musical, Peter Pan. The group has been running since 1955 and has a long history of encouraging and developing youth theatre, this tradition continues in 2016 with a cast of 27 children and young people aged from four to 18 years old. Accompanied by 12 adults, the Country Players are eager to take their audience on a journey to Neverland, with shows scheduled for early September. Country Players’ production of Peter Pan doesn’t have a traditional look when it comes to set design or costuming, in fact there are no green tights in sight. Director John Amosa wanted an ‘edgier’ look and the production has a distinctly

Steampunk feel about it, which the cast have been greatly enthusiastic about. However, the show still has all the magic you would expect from a Peter Pan story and is great family entertainment, featuring 14 fantastic songs from ‘I Believe In Fairies’, which will keep the audience’s toes tapping, to the emotional ‘Don’t Say Goodbye’. There are six shows scheduled with the weekends being a bring-your-own picnic. Audience members are welcome to provide their own food, drink, cutlery and crockery while Country Players will provide tea and coffee. There are also two ‘show only’ performances where tea, coffee and cake are provided. Tickets are just $20 for adults and $10 for children

The fitness and map reading skills of hundreds of outdoor adventurers will be tested as they walk, run and mountainbike around St Arnaud in the Wily Weka Challenge next month. The Nelson Orienteering Club’s event on September 11 will feature teams of two to five people racing for either three or six hours to find controls that have been marked on a map. Controls are allocated points depending on their difficulty and the team with the most points wins – teams returning after the cut-off time lose points for every minute they are late. It will be the third edition of the popular event and race planner Gordon Sloane says this year’s map has about 70 controls and it’s unlikely that any teams will collect maximum points. Gordon says the third Wily Weka also has a new section for teams who will compete in the six-hour map on mountainbikes as well as on foot. Teams can do the whole course when they are on foot but mountainbikers will be limited to controls in one part of the map. “A good mountainbike team will get quite a few of the controls but it’s highly unlikely that any of the teams will get all of them - I’ll shout them a beer if they do,” Gordon says. The Wily Weka Challenge has so far attracted over 300 competitors in either the three or six hour race. Although Gordon says there are some top class competitors, including

including GODZone winners Dan Busch and Dan Moore, the event is suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities. Gordon says the three-hour race is aimed specifically at families and less experienced competitors and is a perfect introduction to rogaining. The Wily Weka will also be a chance for all-women’s teams to test their navigation skills and fitness before racing in the Spring Challenge in Golden Bay on September 24. “We have at least 40 Spring Challenge teams entered so far. It’s perfect for them especially with the Spring Challenge coming back into the district this year.” Gordon says there will be about $3000 in performance and spot prizes in this year’s event including a prize for the first six and three hour team to find a photo of a Wily Weka that will be placed at one of the controls. The event will be based at the St Arnaud Community Hall with the sixhour race starting at 9am and the three-hour race starting at 11am. Entry for the three-hour race costs $40 for adults and $25 for under18s while the six-hour costs $50 for adults $35 for under-18s. Entries will remain open until September 1 and will not be taken on the day. To enter, go to the Nelson Orienteering Club’s website noc. org.nz A rain day is scheduled for October 16 with any postponement posted on the club’s website. The event is a fundraiser to help the club produce its maps.

Kit Mali for May

Authorised By: Kit Maling 261 Pugh Road, Hope Ph: 544 0536

Kit Maling

for Mayor Hi, I’m Kit Maling. I am offering myself to be your next Mayor. I have visited all our communities and it is not possible to meet everyone or knock on every door so I have prepared an introduction so you all know my background prior to considering your vote in the upcoming Mayoral election. Born in British Columbia, Canada 1953 (aged 62). Emigrated to New Zealand with my family as a ten year old and settled in Richmond in 1963. Attended local schools including Waimea College and first job was as an apprentice golf professional. I joined the New Zealand Police as a 20 year old and served 24 years in Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington two stints in each and my last posting was at the Royal New Zealand Police College as Officer in Charge of Advanced Training. At the age of 45 took early retirement to be close to my elderly father Rob who some will remember as the Mayor of Richmond in the 1980’s. We bought an orchard on the Waimea Plains. After seven years we leased the land and I worked as a production manager at Hoddy’s Orchard until elected to the Tasman District Council in 2010 and I worked two days a week for the Community

Probation Service. In 2013 I stood unsuccessfully for the Mayor of Tasman and since then I have managed the Waimea Village on a part time basis (I helped to resolve the long running dispute between the residents and the owners by buying the Village and selling it to the residents at the same price). I have also worked part time for an insurance broking firm called Preferred New Zealand. I have been active in the community throughout my life as a school board of trustees member, a rugby coach, administrator and manager and active in cricket as well, both coaching and administration. I have been married to Leanne for 35 years and we have three adult children, two who live locally and one who lives in Auckland. Being a keen outdoor person, I enjoy hunting and trout and sea fishing when time permits.

Shooter aims for medal Jacob Page Sports Editor

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson’s Brian Bishop is hopefull of leading the New Zealand Pistol Shooting Team to a medal at the Australasian International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) Hand Gun Championships in Bali, Indonesia, next week. The 27-strong team flew out on Sunday to acclimatise with the Cable Bay Club shooter also taking on the team manager role. IPSC is an action-based style of shooting, the pistols and ammunition are real, and the safety record and standard are second to none. Brian is competing in the open class and, along with one other person, was part of the fourmember team that came third in the last Australasian IPSC Hand Gun Championships. Brian has been part of the New Zealand setup for the past six years. He says the athletic nature and moving targets make for a good mental challenge. “Some stages are really complicated and you have to work out

are awesome, but I love the challenge of going to a course and trying to work out mentally what is required for me to be successful.

“You only get one shot and I like that.” Brian travels the country to compete at various regional events to make selection for the New Zealand team. “You have to be calm, you’re moving with a full firearm. “You need to think on your feet and go with it, because no two competitions are the same,” he says. “I never wanted the flashest gear but I love to compete.” The 48-year-old says he’d like a placing in the team’s event. “We achieved that at the last Australasian Championships and there are a couple of us who are returning.” The former rower and hockey player says he enjoys the sport because you can still do it to a high level at an older age. “I’ve shot against guys in their 70s and, while they don’t move rapidly, they’re deadly accurate,” he says. “The top guys in training can shoot 30,000 to 40,000 rounds a year. I’m more around 10,000.” Brian says he tries to get to Cable Bay or Motueka to train every week, as well as mentor new members.

Waimea College too clinical for Stoke Jacob Page Waimea College 10A wore down a stubborn Stoke team 36-27 in their senior 3 netball game at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. Waimea College 10A eventually got the upper hand after Stoke played the whole first quarter without a wing defence. Waimea made the most of their speed through court to open an 11-7 quarter-time ad-

vantage. Despite being restored to seven players for the start of the second quarter, Stoke struggled to keep up. An 8-3 Waimea College run had the schoolgirls in control before they switched off in the final minutes of the half to concede three unanswered goals. Waimea captain Chanelle Hibberd was fast at the centre pass and was often the go-to-person for quick distribution. Stoke continued their resur-

gence closing to within three goals early in the third quarter. Stoke’s diminutive centre Nell Glover worked hard at both ends of the court while Stoke’s the shooting accuracy and its defensive pressure also increased. Stoke did well to slow the Waimea attack which was rampant in the opening quarter. Waimea eventually got their act together and earned a 2620 advantage to take into the final quarter.

while the team is not full of stars, they are sure to give a decent account of themselves. “I’ve said to the boys that if they stick to the game plan and execute it well, and have some fun then that’ll be really great,”

Waimea will face John McGlashan College, Wakatipu High School and Menzies College. “It’s hard to know how we stack up,” Kieron says. “I know the boys will be playing against some future All Blacks so that’s pretty

exciting for them. Kieron wanted to thank fellow coach Glen Wastney and team managers Matt and Linda Hahn for their efforts in organising the trip, and all of their sponsors for their generous support.

Jacob Page There was no looking forward for Nelson’s Kelsey Smith as she lamented the Black Sticks’ second consecutive fourth place finish at an Olympic Games. After being outclassed 3-0 by eventually gold medallists Great Britain in the semi-finals, the Kiwis were unable to make the most of their chances against Germany to lose 2-1. The 22-year-old has several more Olympic campaigns ahead of her, but her thoughts were with her more experienced colleagues including fellow Waimea College Old Girl, Anita McLaren. “We didn’t make the most of the chances we created. “I really feel for the girls who experienced this kind of disappointment four years ago. “The mood is pretty down at this point.” Kelsey gave herself a pass mark for her efforts during the tournament, which included a goal against Spain and one against Australia in a quarter-final victory. “I’ve felt really great about how all the girls have welcomed me into the team, but this was not the result we wanted.” Team members had the option of when they flew home, and whether to attend the closing ceremony.

The Waimea College junior boys basketball team are keen to make the top eight of their South Island tournament at the end of the month. Coach Nic Trathen says with height under the basket and decent perimeter shooters, he was confident the team would make an impact. “We definitely have the ability to put it all together, it’s just a case of whether we can do it on the day when it counts.” Nic says to earn a top eight spot they would need to finish in the top two of their pool. Games against Burnside High School, Christch-

2016 SISS NETBALL South Island Secondary Schools Netball

Nelson’s Saxton Stadium will play host to the largest netball tournament in the country when the South Island Secondary Schools event starts next week. Tournament co-ordinator Marilyn Milne says more than 80 teams, 900 players and 86 umpires will compete at the 54th edition of the event, from August 29 to September 1 during the traditional winter tournament week. While traditional local heavyweights Nelson College for Girls and Waimea College will look to be near the top of the A grade once again as well as Nayland and Garin College, the region will also be represented by Collingwood, Golden Bay, Tapawera, Motueka and Murchison, across the three grades. The A grade will be played inside Saxton Stadium while the B and C grades will be contested on the outside courts. Marilyn says the tournament is where the next generation of New Zealand netballers get to showcase themselves. “This really is the proving ground for girls who want to become Silver Ferns. “Even players who want to make New Zealand age-group teams or New Zealand A get their start at this tournament.” Local players like Shannon Francois and Zoe

“There’s plenty of examples of players who have impressed at this tournament and gone on to do great things. St Margaret’s College from Christchurch have won the title two out of the past three years. The top five schools qualify for the 16-team New Zealand Secondary School Championships. Back row: Roger Ledingham, Dianne Gregg, Jeni Thornborough, That event will be held in Doug Milne. Front row: Marlyn Milne, Caroline Foster, Sarah Hutt Valley from October 4 to October 7. Rankin. Missing are: Maree Smith and Cherie Chamberlain. Marilyn says she expected Walker being two netballers school days and on to the top the Christchurch schools to who have progressed from their level of the sport. be in the mix for the title, as

well as Southland’s Verdon College who are perennial top performers during the week. Acknowledgement of Robyn Broughton’s 50-year involvement in the tournament will also be made. Marilyn says many of the umpires will use the tournament as a chance to get closer to national qualifications. “There’s bound to be some excellent, fast, high quality netball played. The tournament has matches throughout each day.
