Life safety skills to be taught to local kids A safety skills course for 9–11 yearolds returns to the Richmond Showgrounds this month, building on its work to create a generation of Clued Up Kids in Nelson Tasman. Clued Up Kids is a multi-agency programme teaching primary schoolaged children confidence and life skills to help them stay safe in a range of real-life scenarios. The event is now in its third year. From October 29 to November 2, more than 500 children from Appleby, Nelson Christian, Ranzau, Wakefield, Richmond Primary, Auckland Point, Mahana, and Home School will take part. The hands-on activities include a ‘shaky house’ for practising what to do in an earthquake, a smoky-fire simulation that teaches children how to react during a house fire, as well as demonstrations on water safety, interacting with dogs, road safety, quad bikes, truck and cycle safety, and first aid. The agencies involved or providing support include the Tasman District and Nelson City councils, Nelson Bays
Primary Health, Police, Fire Emergency NZ, Civil Defence, New Zealand Red Cross, CET Landskills, TNL and Neltech. Rotary and the Richmond Lions provide volunteers. Thanks also to Benge and Co for providing fresh fruit to the children as they move around the two-hour interactive programme. Clued Up Kids coordinator Jo Perrett says, “the children are of an age where they’re becoming increasingly independent and therefore more likely to encounter situations where there may not be an adult around to tell them what to do. Clued Up Kids gives them the tools to keep themselves safe.” Jo says agencies working with young people had reported greater levels of student knowledge about what to do in an emergency from those who had been involved with Clued Up Kids in previous years. Senior Constable Susan Finigan of Nelson police says she was impressed by the knowledge of young people during recent Keeping Ourselves Safe sessions in Nelson Tasman schools.

International investor donates land to Department of Conservation Amy Russ Reporter
amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A company owned by international investor and billionaire Ken Dart has announced plans to donate 2,127 acres of land in the Wairoa Gorge, in the Tasman region, to the crown. The announcement was made by RHL, on October 15. RHL is one of the companies owned by Ken - a visionary entrepreneur – which works with landowners interested in conserving endangered lands and develop minimal impact, world class mountainbiking trails and which has donated the land. Paul Dorrance, speaking as the director of RHL, says it was always in the plan for the land to be donated. “Wairoa Gorge is a special place for Ken and the vision, from day-

Paul says, “the land will be entirely in the hands of Department of Conservation.” DOC will take custodianship of the land in Wairoa Gorge while the mountainbike park that was developed there will be main-

the regeneration of native bush, and the opening of the park to the general public. “We would like to see the opening of the park to all, some walking tracks and the ability for the use of e-bikes. “It would be great to see some tracks bought down to a beginners level because some of them are extremely tough.” The land is expected to be formally handed over to the Department of Conservation by the end of the year. Roy Grose, Director of Operations (Northern South Island) at the Department of Conservation says, “Wairoa is an area of outstanding natural beauty. “We are delighted the park will be conserved in perpetuity for recreational use and are grateful to RHL for their exceptional stewardship of the land over the past eight years.”

Vape store owner offers a quality alternative Amy Russ Reporter
amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Allen Rapley lived a high-stress lifestyle that he says was taking its toll on his health. The ex-local, who has recently returned to the region, believes vaping is a great stop-smoking alternative and is committed to providing the public with quality options. “Several years back I was living in Auckland in a high-stress lifestyle,” say Allen. “This, along with smoking, was causing my health to suffer and I sought vaping as a smoking cessation alternative. After attempts with patches and lozenges had all failed me I soon found that I enjoyed vaping a lot and, being a geek by nature, I found myself researching and learning everything I could about it, the products, the liquids, the ingredients and the health effects.” The New Zealand stop smoking website, Quitline, now list ecigarettes (or vaping) as a viable option for those wanting to quit smoking. On their site they state that ‘evidence has highlighted that e-cigarettes are up to 95% better for your health than smoking tobac-

in his opinion, more than just health benefits, vaping has its own culture of support and encouragement. “These connections showed me that there were great e-liquids
available, from all over the world, but some were of very dubious nature in un-regulated countries and most were expensive. “I met New Zealand e-liquid manufacturers and realised we
have some of the best e-liquids right on our doorstep, with international taste, but with traceable and pure ingredients and much more affordable prices. “The decision to move home was motivated by leaving the rat-race for a better lifestyle where I could give back to the community and help people discover that they can quit smoking, even if other methods had failed them.” Allen is extremely picky about which hardware he stocks and confidently says that, “hand on heart, I know we deliver an honest price and product. Every ingredient can be traced to source with assurance of quality and palm-free origin.” Allen runs a dedicated e-cigarette and vape store where he has all vaping needs covered. The store caters to all levels of vaping from beginners to fullmechanical advanced users. Backed up by experience, the store offers a friendly approach and a comfortable and approachable atmosphere. If you have considered vaping but are not sure where to start, head into the @VAPE store located at 11 McGlashen Ave, or alternatively you can visit them online at www.atvape.co.nz Check with your doctor first to see if vaping is right for you.
The (second) Great Big LITTLE WEDDING SHOW
A letter from Maureen Pugh Maureen Pugh National List MP based in West Coast-Tasman To say the last week has been a distraction is a bit of an understatement. By now you would have heard about the recording made by JamiLee Ross of a conversation between him and Simon Bridges. You will also know that I was discussed in that conversation. Unsurprisingly, Simon’s comments caught me by surprise and were a bit upsetting at first. But I have since met with Simon a couple of times and he has apologised to me personally and to the wider caucus for his remarks. I take him at his word and accept his apology. I think we can all remember a time where we have said something about someone else in the heat of the moment, and have come to regret it. But it is water off a duck’s back to me and today is a new day. I am not interested in the scandal, there are bigger issues on my mind. The access to Stewardship Land is a major issue with widereaching ramifications for the West Coast, while the Waimea Dam, cyclone recovery and employment matters continue to be a focus in Tasman. I came to Wellington to focus on local issues and find solutions, and that is what I will keep doing. So I just wanted to say thank you for the many heartfelt and kind messages I have received, and to let you know that I am fine, and fighting fit to keep focusing on the real issues that are affecting our community. I will leave you with a final note, and that is that we are here as MPs because we believe in a cause. I believe in the values of enterprise and individual freedom, and that government involvement in our lives should be kept to a minimum. That cause is bigger than any one person. I will keep focused on the cause and keep up the hard work to push for the things that matter to West Coast-Tasman. Thank you all

Results are in from 2018 residents’ survey Results from the Tasman District Council’s (TDC) annual resident survey are in, and TDC say they show high levels of satisfaction with recreational facilities and information provided by the council – with room for improvement in roading and public toilets. The National Research Bureau carry out the survey every year, on the council’s behalf, to find out how the

Water conservation advised by council Tasman District Council (TDC) are advising the public to ‘plan ahead’ to avoid water restrictions this season. Conditions are already dry for this time of year. A TDC spokesperson says, “if we continue to have largely fine weather, we could face the prospect of restrictions earlier than usual. However, it is possible to plan ahead and manage the consequences if we all start thinking about conservation before our sources become stretched.”

A juvenile seal fell victim to a car strike over the weekend. The brown fur seal was hit just opposite Ravensdown in Lower Queen St. It is believed to be from the family of seals which occupy the cutting at Haulashore Island and this one may have been a bit lost and was making its way up one of the tributaries in the inlet. We believe it to be a rare occurrence but would be interested to hear from anyone who may have witnessed anything similar in the past.

White Ribbon Ride tackles domestic our violence

Amy Russ Reporter
amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Each year a group of riders steer convoys of motorcycles through towns and cities in the North and South Islands on a week-long tour in support, and to create awareness, of White Ribbon Day. White Ribbon Day is the international day for the elimination of men’s violence towards women. White Ribbon aims to end men’s violence towards women by encouraging men to lead by example and talk to other men. This year they have a new focus on ensuring that dads have the skills and confidence to talk to their sons about respectful relationships and respectful sexual relationships. This campaign is called ‘Raise Our Boys’. This year, a White Ribbon South Island Ride will start in Kaikoura on Saturday, November 17, with riders attending organised events along the way and encouraging men to take the White Ribbon pledge. The group will return to Nelson on White Ribbon Day, Sunday, November 25, to an organised family event, held at Victory Square, with food stalls, music, a bouncy castle and a fun league game. Ambassador and one of the organisers, Blair McKenzie, says they encourage all riders to go along and join them. “We would encourage all local riders to come along and escort us into the Nelson event. We have riders joining us in Murchison and Wakefield on November 25 and we want to make this a big event. The more noise the better.” The group would like every rider to know that they need everyone’s support to make the event into a massive statement. “This is an opportunity to bring the issue out into the open and get people talking. 200 bikes would certainly bring the attention.” Blair is a survivor of family violence and abuse and says the organisation is one close to his heart. “I feel passionate about the White Ribbon Campaign as I grew up in a family with a generational curse of abuse. This made me a very disturbed young man and, unfortunately, I carried it into my own life as a married man,” he says. “Nineteen years ago, I had enough of myself and it was change or die. Thankfully I have changed, breaking the cycle of abuse in my family.” The ride is an initiative that tackles the country’s crippling domestic violence record. Follow the Facebook page, White Ribbon Ride South 2018, for how you can provide support.

Members of Menzshed Waimea took on a project for the Nelson Histrionics Society, to build a replica of the historical railway carriage the ‘Compiegne Wagon’ in which the First and Second Armistice treaties were signed. The carriage extends over four metres long and just over two metres high and is to be the centre attraction at the Armistice 100 – An End to War? event, on Trafalgar St, on Sunday, November 11, to commemorate the centenary signing of the World War 1 Armistice. Menzshed coordinator Alan Kissell says the replica took two weeks to complete and was a team effort, “Graham Fittock built it with the help of Terry Garside and James Chappell, and the Histrionics members did all of the painting.” The Histrionics Society, who are serious on detail and finish, are over the moon with the carriage, with Daryl Page saying, “it is just fantastic! Look at the detail, it is awesome! The
Menzshed have been just fantastic at embracing the concept, they have been so enthusiastic about it right from the start.” The first armistice was signed in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiegne, France, at around 5am on November 11, 1918, and came into effect at 11am that day. Penny Taylor, director for the Nelson event, says, “The armistice negotiations actually took place over three days. We offer a glimpse at what the issues were from all sides and try to provide some background on the lead-up to this point. The terms of the armistice, which were later embedded into the peace treaties, redefined borders and set in motion changes that helped shape the world as we know it today.” The free event runs from 10am to 3:30, November 11, at the top of Trafalgar St. For more information on becoming a member of the Menzshed Waimea, contact mens.shed.waimea@gmail. com

Trial to begin in Richmond for low vision rehabilitation services This month, local residents can access free low vision rehabilitation services, as part of a 9-month trial run in partnership by the Blind Foundation and Matthews Optometry clinic. The clinic will run one day every month to support people who are finding it hard to read, even with their best corrective lenses. “We are running this trial because we can see a real need in Nelson Tasman and also across New Zealand, for more support to be made available to those people who, today, might just be ‘getting by’ while their low vision gets in the way of life,” says Chief Executive of the Blind Foundation, Sandra Budd. “We know from our own clients, that the ability to continue reading is really important for many to retain independence in managing their own affairs, stay connected to family and friends, and for enjoyment.” The trial clinics will provide people with a low vision needs assessment and offer tailored advice for the use of tools like magnification and management of glare and lighting. The aim is to make everyday activities easier, such as reading documents, emails, the newspaper or recipes, and telling the time. Matthews Optometry Group Director, John
Grylls, says his team are pleased to be part of the trial, because they can see a real opportunity to help people. “Clients often believe that when their vision is failing them, not much more can be done. “This initiative is about educating people that there can be a whole range of ways to improve how they get the most out of their remaining vision.” There are countless low vision aids and other proven strategies for coping with low vision, adopting some of these can help people with low vision maximise their remaining vision and maintain
their independence. Some of the most common mechanisms for coping with low vision include using contrasting colours, labelling everything, make everything bigger, keep it clean by keeping items in their proper places where they’re easier to locate. The low vision clinic trial aims to help those who fall into the moderate range of the sight loss continuum, while the Blind Foundation’s services support those towards the far end of the sight loss continuum. “This trial is about establishing a sustainable model that meets the needs of

Emily Beaumont Richmond’s Town Hall was “pumping” on Saturday, October 6, for the ‘One Night Only’ conCraig Starrenburg, Andrew Palmer, Rob Ord, Dave Baker, John Masters, Doug Evans and Norman Phillips hit their notes cert that raised more than $2000 for the Blood Cancer and Leukaemia Foundations. during the much-acclaimed ‘One Night Only’ concert in Richmond. Photo: Supplied. “We had virtually a capacity audience and we’re still getting emails and texts from audience members who loved it,” says Norman Phillips of the Nelson Male Voice Choir. Norman, together with Town Hall manager Mary-Ann McNatty and crooner Phil Rimmer, put the concert together and now impressed concert goers are calling for the group to make it an annual event. “When you sing in a choir you can really feel the audience reactions and, on that night, it was palpable,” says Norman. “We’ve had such great feedback. People really liked the humour and it was great to support that charity, there’re a lot of people affected by it (blood cancer and leukaemia).” Leukemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand say that, every day, six people in New Zealand are diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related-blood condition. Mary-Ann knows only too well the challenges blood cancer presents after receiving a diagnosis of stage 3 multiple myeloma in 2015, she is now happily in remission. The blood cancers combined are the fifth most common form of cancer in New Zealand.

Playcentre celebrates half a century of ‘families growing together’ connect with the local community. “We celebrated being part of the community and providing a place that supports learning through play for our tamariki, and a village for our adults. “Past members were able to come, reminisce and see the centre is still going strong.”
It was a stunning day for the families, with huge walk-on gloop area set up for the kids. A firetruck, face painting and a giant playcentre were also set up, spilling out onto the Richmond School field. “Today, Richmond Playcentre is a vibrant centre with a good mix of all ages from babies to 5-year-
olds. “It is a place siblings and parents can come and play and learn together. It is also a place where adults can learn new things, volunteer and give back to the community.” Olivia would like to thank all the families and sponsors who made the day possible.

3 November 2018 www.nzciderfestival.com Hot on the heels of a sold out event last year, The New Zealand Cider Festival is back in Nelson for its third consecutive year – proving that the popularity of this tasty, versatile beverage is worthy of its own festival. This year’s event, which takes place at Founders Heritage Park on November 3, will showcase over 80 New Zealand cider varieties, even more cider makers and related activities than last year, a feast of talented Kiwi musicians and some fantastic speakers. There will also be lots more local artisan food this year, a wide range of non-alcoholic beverages and some fun, family-friendly entertainment. An all-new aspect of the 2018 New Zealand Cider Festival is the numerous ‘fringe’ events taking place from October 31 to November 4 including cider cocktail making, sensory tasting sessions and informative tours
and talks. Something else that’s new is the opportunity to have some photobooth fun and snap a few pics with family or friends. Hosting the festival is Nelson Venues and Events, which works with a broad portfolio of venues, catering for large and small events. Bound to be a drawcard is celebrity speaker Gabe ‘The Ciderologist’ Cook. Gabe’s passion for cider has lead him to have a hugely successful career working across the industry. He’s made cider, developed cider, advocated cider and has judged at competitions worldwide. Gabe has even presented a bottle to cider to the Queen. You could really say he knows his apples. There’s also an opportunity for people to attend a Cider Cocktail Making session with Nick Widley and Pete Coates from Nelson’s Cod

Every year, tonnes of clothes are dropped off at big blue clothing bins around the country. The bins get emptied and are taken to sorting stations where the reusable is sorted from the rubbish. SaveMart’s head office in Auckland say, “we get a lot of rubbish come through, but about eighty percent is useable, a decent amount. What doesn’t meet New Zealand standards for resale, or isn’t good enough, gets sent overseas or sorted into rags.” The New Zealand-owned company has grown over the past 40 years to be the largest used clothing recyclers in the country. They support the Child Cancer Foundation and other non-profit organisations. Lee Scott, manager of SaveMart Nelson, says they have all walks of life shop at their store, “I believe all charity op shops play
their own part in society. The people who come into our shops come for their own reasons.” National communications manager for Child Cancer Foundation, Cherie Reid, says, “the foundation has been one of SaveMart’s recipient charities for more than 20 years, with approximately 3.5 million dollars donated over that time. The Child Cancer Foundation is not government-funded and we rely on donations, so we can continue supporting more than 1,700 kiwi kids with cancer.” Cherie says the core of their services are the family support coordinators who are based around the country, “they get to know each child and their family, working with them at the hospital and when they return home, helping them to navigate their child cancer journey. Every family is different and so is the support they receive. It could be anything from assistance with travel or household expenses, to connecting them with other local families in a similar situation.”

Endeavour Homes team – Dick Baker, Kevin Satherley and Emma Nicholson This Sunday, 28 October, Endeavour Homes is opening its doors to its new and highly anticipated showhome at 87 Daelyn Drive, Richmond. “It's a showhome example that reflects the quality workmanship the company is renowned for,” says director Dick Baker. “It also showcases many of the products and special features that exemplify Endeavour Homes' mission as a design and building partner. This showhome is a must see for anyone considering building; it's a fine example of what a blend of sensible and creative design can do when it is executed by accomplished, quality-focused tradespeople.” “Our builders on this particular job – Darin Hoskin and Nick Whitley have done an excellent job, especially with the fitting of the exterior cedar,” says director Kevin Satherley. “The other tradesmen and suppliers have done their usual fine job and we are very happy with the finished home.” "We have built Endeavour Homes on its reputation as a quality building partner, and that is something we continually strive to meet and grow upon," says Dick. "It's a competitive industry and we are well aware that people have plenty of choice when they are shopping around for someone to help build their new home.
Our goal, therefore, is not only to deliver on our promises, but to do so to a very high standard. Our foundation is built on our commitment to those practices, and our growth as a company is a direct result of our good name. It's not only a status to live up to, but also something we continually seek to advance on; this new showhome is a statement of who we are and what we can do - for you."
We make building easy
Endeavour Homes is a local “Design and Build” company owned by Nelson residents Dick Baker and Kevin Satherley. With over 40 years industry experience between them, they put in the effort to make the building process as stress free as possible. “Most of our customers will have purchased their own sections and will probably have a basic idea of what they want in their new home," says Dick Baker. “We develop those ideas into a workable house design that fits onto their section and meets their lifestyle and budget requirements. We must be doing something right, as we have now been going for 22 years and have built over 550 homes throughout the top of the South Island.” A series of meetings with Dick and their draftsman brings those ideas to life, using the latest computer design systems. “We
generally try to make things easy,” says Dick. “If there are building or consent issues, we handle them. Our customers get to deal with the fun things – we take on the problems and the stress.” Highly decorated and respected, Endeavour Homes set the benchmark with its quality workmanship and all-round high standards. In a competitive industry, its achievements speak volumes about the people you deal with when you choose Endeavour Homes as your building partner. From the initial showroom introduction, all the way through the design and build process, to the final handing over of the keys, you can be assured its goal is to deliver a superbly finished, award calibre home. So, what does this mean for you and your home building plans? It means that you can trust Endeavour Homes with the design and build of your dream home - because a company that has continuously been this successful in building homes for 22 years across a range of designs and price brackets will give your home the attention and expertise it deserves. Peter Jones Child/youth mentoring organisation Big Brothers Big Sisters will be the main beneficiary of the popular City2Saxton event in 2019. Big Brothers Big Sisters of NelsonTasman has been serving the children of the Nelson-Tasman community for 20 years. It was one of the founding regions in New Zealand and, with nearly 200 matches, is the largest mentoring programme in the country. Big Brothers Big Sisters is an international organisation which has been operating for over 100 years in 13 countries and serves more than 280,000 children in need. “Big Brothers Big Sisters is thrilled to be partnering with Sport Tasman for the City2Saxton, a fantastic event for all ages and all levels of ability,” says Chelsea Routhan, programme director for BBBS. “The vision of BBBS is that every child who needs a mentor, has a mentor.” “Funds raised will be spent on re-
cruiting, training, supervising and supporting volunteer mentors so we can reduce our waiting list of 37 children needing a mentor. This event is a fantastic way for mentors and mentees to join together and participate in the event, and also to raise funds and awareness about our programme.” Sport Tasman continue their efforts to provide a platform for local charities to raise awareness of their causes and obtain much-needed funds. “We are delighted to have BBBS partnering on the event,” says Sport Tasman events manager Katie Arden. “Our aim is to create a vibrant society and our way of doing this is to get more people, more active, more often. Providing for our youth is especially important, and by choosing BBBS as our primary beneficiary we can not only provide the organisation’s kids and mentors with entry for the event but can also help to raise valuable funds for their ongoing support.”

Inaugural golf tournament a resounding success Emily Beaumont Reporter
emily@waimeaweekly.co.nz
With golf clubs in tow, 112 women from Whangaparaoa to Dunedin and everywhere in between, flocked to Richmond last week for the Greenacres Golf Club’s inaugural 3-day women’s golf tournament. “It was very successful. Everyone was so impressed with the region and the pristine condition our golf course was presented in,” says tournament convenor Pam McLean. After the idea for the tournament was first tabled at the club two years ago, a dedicated committee was established and since February 2017 they have worked tirelessly toward it. Tournament sponsors Richmond Unlimited, Seifried Estate, NBS and Olive Estate Lifestyle were joined by an overwhelming number of local
businesses in providing prizes for winners and raffles. “We based the whole tournament on everything that’s great about living in the Nelson Tasman region, our raffle tables really reflected that,” says Pam. The clubhouse was packed for the tournament’s finale dinner on Wednesday, October 17, and Pam says the jovial vibe reflected the positive feedback. “Lots of the women were saying things like, there was only two of us this year, but we’ll be back next year with ten of us.” Due to its success, the tournament looks set to become an annual fixture on women’s golfing calendars with next year’s dates already set, from 16-18 October. “It’s been absolutely great, just wonderful. “The girls on the organising committee have done an amazing job and so have all the volunteers,” says local competitor Lois Schwass prepares to make a putt during the 3-day Women’s Golf tournament at Greenacres Golf Lois Schwass. Table tennis team bring home the winning medals Three table tennis teams from the region competed at the national champs in Tauranga earlier this month. Day two saw the men playing their last round against Wellington, battling it out for third and fourth place. The men won the round, claiming bronze for the competition. Finn Brown was drafted for the Southland under 13 boys team and won both his games against more experienced players, helping Southland secure a place in the finals. The team brought home a silver medal. Kivido Tayerle played for Canterbury’s under SAVINGS 15 boys team. Kylie says the competition was extremely tough. “Kivido did very well playing against the stronger boys. He had some very close games and should be very proud of his efforts.”

Anita McLaren announces international retirement Black Sticks hockey player, Anita McLaren, has announced her retirement from the international hockey scene as she calls time on her career and moves to oversee sport at Auckland’s renowned King’s College. The country’s all-time lead goal scorer has left her mark on the international hockey scene, playing for the Black Sticks for nearly ten years and representing New Zealand at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and the 2012 Summer Olympics in Rio. Nelson Hockey Association (NHA) operations manager Fabian Amor says Anita began her playing days at Waimea College before moving on to what was then called Richmond Ladies Hockey Club.

“She played representative hockey for Nelson before being selected for the capital regional team and eventually for the Black Sticks.” Anita has racked up over 270 games for New Zealand and is the Black Sticks leading goal scorer with 105 goals. “Anita has been an icon for our sport, and sport in general, both nationally and internationally. She is a true athlete of outstanding ability and grit, she nevertheless remains a hometown girl at heart, being a passionate Nelsonian and inspiring our younger players to greater sporting heights.” Fabian says, “Anita has asked us to pass on her gratitude and thanks to the Nelson hockey community, and in particular those who have supported her over many years and helped her achieve her dreams.”

Nelson Matters The reopening of “The Boathouse” on Wakefield Quay last Friday came at the end of a toxic week in Parliament. It reminded me of so much that is good in our community and how lucky we are to live in Nelson. The building was conceived in 1888 by the Nelson Rowing Club but was not completed until 1906. In the 1930s 40s and 50s it was Nelson’s main Saturday night dance venue and was sometimes packed with over a thousand party goers. It fell into disrepair in the 1970s until it got so bad that in 1985 the Nelson Council issued a demolition order. It was
saved by the initiative of Nelson solicitor Nick Moore who corralled 25 other Nelson residents to put up $1,000 each to purchase the building and form the Boathouse Society. The Society’s purpose was to restore the building and encourage recreational and conservational use of the surrounding waterfront and harbour. The Boathouse under the Society’s ownership has been a venue for thousands of community and family events over the past 33 years. Like so many Nelsonians I have shared tears there of joy there at weddings and sadness

at funerals. I’ve enjoyed music of every variety and danced there long and badly. It’s been the venue for dozens of fund raisers and debates over community issues. A special aspect of this venue is that people can retreat on to the deck and soak up the vista of our beautiful harbour, bay and mountains. The devastation wreaked on the Boathouse by Cyclone Fehi on 1 February was gut wrenching to see. The floors were munted and the foundations were extensively damaged. I was inundated with Nelsonians pleas to ensure we saved the Grand Old Dame again. The cost has been more than half

a million dollars. I have lobbied for support of organisations like the Rata Foundation represented at the opening by Mike Rutledge. There were also contributions from Heritage NZ, Pub Charity, NCC and other generous donors through Give a Little. The bulk of the credit belongs to Society Chair Annie Henry, her capable committee and the dedicated staff led by Manager Amie-Jo Trayes. The stunning new beechwood floors were recovered from cyclone-felled trees in Karamea made possible by legislation I put through Parliament to allow the recovery of wind-blown dead
trees. This legislation was vigorously opposed by the Labour and Green parties, but reinforces my view of practical environmentalism where we can save heritage buildings with wood that would otherwise go to waste. The reopening of The Boathouse is a powerful symbol of the strength of our community spirit, the value we place on heritage and our love of the waterfront. Check out the free open day at The Boathouse on Sunday 28 October 10am-4pm. Congrats to the Society for saving it. It is now time for us all to enjoy this Nelson gem. Advt.
