The upgrade is driven by the growing and changing demands on Richmond’s infrastructure. Extreme weather events, a rapid increase in population and evolving dynamics within the town (once a rural service centre that is increasingly being looked to as the retail heart of a thriving urban area) have all thrown an added burden on the spine of services that run beneath the commercial heart of Richmond – Queen Street.

long-term fix that will benefit everyone.

Bus services Bus services will continue and the timetable will not change. However, the bus stop will shift from Sundial Square to the top of Queen Street opposite the Tasman District Council office.

Parts of the street will be closed to traffic. Initially, the street will be closed from Gladstone Road up to the McIndoe Place roundabout (the roundabout itself will remain open in this early phase). Day-time pedestrian access to all shops will be maintained.

The key things to remember are: • Use the ring road. • Park and walk to Queen Street. • Support retailers and businesses – they are open throughout the project.

Richmond Unlimited, Tasman District Council and contractors Hawkins Infrastructure have all appointed liaison staff to ensure Queen St retailers and businesses are kept fully informed during the street’s $11million upgrade which starts on February 7. The upgrade is designed to increase the capacity of stormwater pipes and direct water away from buildings to prevent flooding that devastated the central business district in 2011 and 2013. Ageing water and wastewater pipes will be also replaced and the streetscape modernised to create a more pedestrian-friendly space. However, Richmond Unlimited and council recognise that the project will have a big impact on retailers and businesses and have ensured there will be plenty of people on the ground to resolve any issues or problems. Council has appointed Jeannie Homesley as project manager and requested that Hawkins appoint a stakeholder liaison officer as part of the contract. Chris Forman started in that role last week, moving into an office at 272 Queen St and will be available 24-7 on an 0800 000413. Richmond Unlimited will also be working hard to minimise the impact

“Well, I’m pretty-time rich as I’m retired so the weather really doesn’t matter. If it’s raining I’ll stay inside and read a book, if it’s not, I’ll go play golf.”

“It hasn’t really disrupted our plans but we’re hoping for some summer weather in mid-late February. We’re going for a campervan trip when all the holiday makers leave.”

“We’ve been up in Northland actually so we’ve missed all the weather here. Up there, there was one day of rain in the two weeks we were there.”

Communication ‘key’ WindowFROM PAGE 1 businesses. Chris has already talked to all the businesses that will be affected by the first stage of the development between Gladstone Rd and near McIndoe Place and says he’s been encouraged by their pragmatic approach to the challenges ahead. “I walked the street before Christmas and met all the owners involved in stage one. They know there will be challenges but they were generally very positive about it. “The biggest concern is the parking and access that will be lost outside their businesses. But we are exploring all the alternatives and looking at ways to minimise that problem - we will be looking outside the square for solu-

tions.” Chris says the owner of Richmond Auto Court, Lawrie Wilson, has already helped find one solution to the parking issue by offering to keep the front row of his car yard clear so that neighbouring businesses can have access from Queen St. Chris says he will be “happy for anyone to pop in” and discuss any other suggestions or for people to call him on the 0800 number anytime to talk about their concerns. Belinda says Richmond Unlimited has been working hard for the last year to help businesses prepare for the impact of the redevelopment. She says the project will be one of the biggest challenges many of the Queen St businesses will have faced and it is important for Richmond

The popular Tasman Great Taste Trail may be reopened later this week after a massive clean-up operation on Rabbit Island removed “large numbers of trees” flattened in Saturday’s storm, The Tasman District Council was forced to close Rabbit Island on Sunday for safety reasons because heavy machinery was being used to help cleanup the fallen trees. Council’s community relations manager Chris Choat says there are also a number of trees that have been partially blown over that represent a potential danger until they have been felled.

Although Rabbit Island was reopened on Monday, all the cycle trails, including the Great Taste Trail, were to remain closed until the fallen trees were cleared. Chris says the contractors are hopeful the rest of the trees will be removed and the cycle trail reopened by Wednesday or Thursday. “Due to storm damage we had to close Moturoa-Rabbit Island and there are also some closures on Rough Island, “ Chris says. “A number of trees are down affecting Tasman’s Great Taste Trail so we decided to close the island to the public for safety reasons. “We managed to get Rabbit Island back open this morning

Young drivers breaching the conditions of their graduated licence was the big ticket item during a police operation aimed at boy racers around the Nelson-Tasman region last week. Operation Resolve started last week and culminated in a crack down on boys racers on Saturday night and into Sunday morning following reports of a planned mass burn-out near Tahunanui. However, there were no major incidents with Tasman road policing team leader senior sergeant Grant Andrews saying the police presence managed to deter the boy racers. Grant says there were two minor single-vehicle accidents and both drivers will be charged with careless use of a vehicle. Police also impounded three vehicles after drivers were stopped for sustained loss of traction and also issued three roadside suspensions. “We certainly disrupted them,” Grant says. “We started deployment at the Nelson Lakes last week when we suspended two of the young driv-

ers associated with boy racer community. “We also impounded a vehicle because of sustained loss of traction after a complaint.” Grant says they stopped 17 drivers on Saturday night and early on Sunday morning with the majority being for breach of graduated rivers licence “and they are all facing fines.” “We impounded three vehicles for sustained loss of traction and one of them was a disqualified driver. Another three drivers received roadside suspensions for excess demerit points but there were no huge issues. “We were amongst them and didn’t give them the opportunity to do the burn-outs or put diesel on the roads and that was the whole object of the operation. “It was a good outcome, it was a good result.” Grant says “there will be further planning” for boy racer operations although the community has a big role to play as well. “What we really want from people is to tell us at the time rather than getting an escalation of it happening.” Operation Resolve covered Nelson Lakes, Nelson, Richmond, Stoke and Atawhai.

Boat beached on Haulashore: Strong winds are believed to have caused a small sailing boat to run aground on Haulashore Island last week. The beached boat, first spotted on Thursday morning, is believed to have washed ashore after breaking from its mooring in an overnight storm. Harbourmaster Dave Duncan says the owner was notified immediately and went out to secure his boat. “There are a couple of guys who are try-

Teenager assaulted at Jubilee Park: An 18-year-old girl was assaulted in one of the female toilets at Jubilee Park late Thursday night. The incident occurred between 11.30pm and 12am and left the victim shaken and with a minor injury. Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnston says police believe the attack was sexually motivated. The woman managed to fight off the offender who was described as Maori in his 40s, with a distinctive thick beard that came down to his chest, bushy eyebrows and of a large build. After fighting off the offender, who ran away, the teenager immediately called police who scoured the area but could not locate the man.

Our beaches are best It’s hardly a secret, but our region has some of the best beaches in the country. Tasman beaches Rabbit Island and Kaiteriteri have been selected as two of the top ten beaches in New Zealand, by AA Traveller. The list is titled “New Zealand’s Top 10 Family-Favourite Beaches” and Nelson, along with Auckland and Canterbury, have two of the beaches. AA Traveller marketing manager Rhys James says a lot of what makes a beach popular with parents is about what else is available in and around where they’re spending their day. “They’re looking for a beach that offers safe swimming, but beyond that they also want good facilities including barbeques and playgrounds, walking and cycling tracks and places to eat nearby, so they can really make a day of it,” he says. “It’s places like these that appeal and the good thing is you can find them throughout the country,” he says. Rhys says having something for everyone is one of the many reasons why heading to the beach is a summer staple and why so many families have that particular beach they always go back to. “They’ve found a place that works for everyone, but we wanted to show Kiwis that there are plenty out there to choose from, so don’t be afraid to head to a new place this summer.” The top 10 family-favourite beaches were: • Kaiteriteri Beach, Nelson/Tasman • Rabbit Island, Nelson • Te Tii Bay, Paihia • Matapouri Bay, Northland • Cheltenham Beach, Auckland • Long Bay Regional Park, Auckland • Oriental Bay Beach, Wellington • St Clair Beach, Otago • Caroline Bay, Canterbury • Sumner, Christchurch

Wairua Warrior now a world qualifier Jacob Page

Nelson-based Obstacle Course Race (OCR) has gained accreditation as a World Championship qualifying event for its annual Wairua Warrior race in March. For the first time, New Zealand’s OCR athletes will get the chance to qualify for the OCR World Championships on March 25, at the event which is held at Nelson’s Happy Valley.

Ben Bolitho and Reid Carnegie have had to travel to Australia to qualify for the Obstacle Racing Course World Championships in Toronto, Canada, in October, but with Nelson’s Wairua Warrior earning qualifying status they will be able to do it on home soil from now on. Photo: Jacob Page.

The top three men and three women at the Wairua Warrior will qualify to compete in the Pro division at the Obstacle Course Racing World Championships, while the top 10 men and 10 women will qualify to compete in their respective age group divisions. The Championship will be held in Ontario Canada, October 13 to 15. The Wairua Warrior has seen an increasing rise in participation since its inception, with numbers doubling in 2016 – interest has already been strong, particularly with international athletes from the USA, Canada and Australia booked to compete in this year’s race. The race itself includes 6km and 12km distances, features more than 20 obstacles ranging from balance beams to barbed wire crawls, to sand bag carries, climbing walls and tyre drags, with some obstacles requiring pure physical strength, and others requiring endurance, balance and technical ability. Event organisers Greg and Donna Witika created the Wairua Warrior to bridge the gap between “mud runs” and “obstacle course racing”. Greg says he couldn’t have imagined how much the event has

I'd like to welcome Marleen and Michael to the area - I am sure they will be very happy in the friendly village of Wakefield. They left Auckland behind to start a new life in beautiful Nelson, and will soon welcome you at the former Wakefield Tearooms. A new name, new food and new coffee all mixed in with warm German hospitality and service. “The Villa” will be your stop for delicious cakes, sandwiches, lunches, pastries and the best coffee in town - all made from scratch. During the winter months it will be a destination for fine dining, on selected days, with an affordable price tag. “Daily Exchange” will be your destination for getting your take-home gourmet food - from handmade sauerkraut to terrines and everything in-between. “The Villa” will also be open for special occasions and they will be happy to discuss your requirements. Bookings are welcome anytime. You will be in good hands at the “The Villa” with Marleen welcoming you and Michael catering to your tastebuds. Marleen has an extensive background in hospitality, trained in

Germany, she has 18 years’ experience in fine dining, 5-star hotels (across Switzerland and Germany), cruise liners like the Queen Mary II, and the Langham Hotel in Auckland. Michael also trained in Germany and has 22 years’ experience across Switzerland, Los Angeles, Hawaii, the Caribbean, on the Queen Mary II and as Executive Head chef for “Collective Hospitality” in Auckland - NZ's fastest growing catering company. Marleen and Michael will open the doors to their new venture in early February, but in the meantime why not drop by and say 'hi' and have a look at what they are up to. They are looking to hire another chef with café experience, front of house staff and musicians - weekends only - who are keen to showcase their talents or who just love to play music. If you are interested, please send an email to info@dailyexchange.co.nz. I wish them every success in this venture and hopefully I'll see some of you there in the future.

Driver caught twice after clocking 159kmh Simon Bloomberg Police are disappointed that a driver who was stopped doing 159kmh near Springs Junction was stopped again about an hour later for driving while his licence was suspended. Nelson senior sergeant Grant Andrews says the driver was caught as a result of a “huge” police presence on the State Highways around Springs Junction, Murchison and St Arnaud. Police have been targeting SH7 and SH65 after the number of vehicles on those roads increased from about 1500 to 4200 a day following the closure of SH1 after the Kaikoura earthquake in November. “Road policing staff from Tasman have made a huge commitment to that area,” Grant says. “We’ve got two staff permanently positioned at Murchison and we’ll be extending that out to the end of June at this point. “One guy recently went past the camera van at 159 and they called up the highway patrol who stopped him at Springs Junction. He had his licence suspended on demerit points we took him back to Maruia Motels so he could stay the night. “We even dropped his car off there because he didn’t want to leave on the side of the road. But we went back there an hour later and the car had gone, so we radioed down the road and got him again and he was charged with driving while suspended. “People like this are really disappointing - 159kmh is just not acceptable.” However, Grant says the majority of drivers have been very patient and police are delighted there were no “significant injury crashes” on those roads over the busy Christmas period. He says the increased physical presence of police, as well as enforcement and education, are all helping to ensure traffic flows

e l p o e p d o o f h Y ou r f re s Posts for new lights going up near Maruia. smoothly and safely though the roads. “We’ve given away pallet loads of water to drivers with drive safe messages on the bottles. We are also giving coffee vouchers to drivers who we pull over and we are talking to them about their driving. “We’ve also stopped a few drivers for impeding traffic. In fact, I was down at the lake yesterday and I got one myself. “A lot of them are unfamiliar with the roads so it’s about education. If you see vehicles backing up behind you, there’s a reason and it’s about bringing it to their attention.” Grant says the New Zealand Transport Agency is also “putting a lot of effort in with their contractors to maintain that road and they have done really well”. NZTA has introduced a number of speed limit changes, aimed at reducing speed in potentially dangerous sections of road, and is also installing a set of traffic lights at a single lane bridge at Maruia. Marlborough Roads manager Frank Porter says Maruia signals will be operational by the end of this week. “The road is coping with the increased traffic and the substantial increase in heavy vehicles,” Frank says. “To help keep the road well maintained, we are bringing forward planned work to strengthen and widen stretches of roads along the new alternative SH1 route, particularly in Marlborough and Tasman areas.”

SCHOOL HOLIDAY PUPPET SHOW: Shadow puppet performances, art and food will be taking over the Victory Community Centre this Thursday and Friday. Performances by Roger Sanders (pictured left) and Akiko Miyamoto (right) are being supported by Gareth Cashin (centre) at the centre, as well as Nelson Creative Communities Fund, to give Nelson kids something fun to do as the school holidays draw to a close. Each morning at 10:30am there will be two shows – Momotaro (Peach Boy) and Mr Praying Mantis and Dragon Dance, followed by art activities. In the afternoons at 1:30pm you can see The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Rat who Wrestled, followed by ‘create your own puppet performance’, (bring a shoe box and torch with you for this). Yummy food and drinks will also be available both days from 11am – 1:30pm, cash only. Tickets are $3.00 per person, or $15.00 per family (up to five people). You can pick up tickets at the community centre, or get yours on the day. Photo: Kate Russell.

Bagpipes and haggis at Fairfield The sound of bagpipes and the smell of haggis are set to fill the Fairfield House Meadow this Sunday evening. It is the first time the City of Nelson Pipe Band has organised ‘Pipes in the Park’ – an outdoor Scottish summer concert that will feature other local musicians too, not just pipes and drums. There will be guest performances by Single Malt Barbershop Quartet, actor and story teller Roger Sanders, singer Jacquie Walters, Nicola Haines, a highland dancer, and the Kildunne School of Irish Dance. It is being done as a fund-raiser for the band, whose members range in age from 13 right through to 80. Organiser Lucy Jackson, who is a piper and also secretary of the band, says it will be a “one of a kind” event. “It’s going to be a real fest of all things Scottish, right here in sunny Nelson,” she says. “We will also have some food and drink available, including real haggis, shortbread, and berries and icecream. “So bring a rug to sit on, and cash for the food and raffles.” Pipes in the Park is on this Sunday, 29 January, 4-6pm, Fairfield House Meadow. Entry is $10 for adults, kids free. Cash only. If raining, it will be held on Monday, 30 January, (Nelson Anniversary day).

Building or Renovating? Bring us your plans Working from Plans I heard about the great service at ColourPlus in Richmond so walked in with my new house plans with wallpaper in mind. I was very happy with the customer service and range of products with selecting feature wallpaper for the house so it was an easy choice again to get ColourPlus to help me with drapes and blinds for the new build. The team at ColourPlus were knowledgeable and had some great advice using my floor-plans, colour charts and flooring choices to narrow down options, initially from off the plan, through to selecting samples to complement our colours and floorings and importantly fit in with our build budget, finally installing them to a fantastic finish to our new home.

Is that broken down ever further with how much freedom campers contribute and the costs associated dealing with the aftermath?....also, considering the article relates to flights in and out, thinking most freedom campers are in their $2 vans driving everywhere with their 2 minute noodles and cheap pasta....and, of course, good supply of alcohol. Dennis Gibbs. Yes, I love Nelson, have a good friend who lives in Richmond and I have been there lots of times, lovely beaches, nice weather. Also, her mum lived in Stoke and that is a nice place. Maree Murdoch. Sun crown ‘shady’: The Nelson sunshine recorder is shaded from the early morning sun by the Tahunanui hills, no shading at Richmond Showgrounds by the sea. Gordon Curnow. The airport’s in Tahuna, anyway. If NCC really wants to cry about semantics maybe they should move it to The Centre Of New Zealand. Or maybe they could be good sports for once and stop crying over someone else winning something. Sounds like someone got too much praise as a child. There’s no award for participation here, NCC. Go home and cry to Mummy. Josephine McKay. Haha....Nelson, time to get with the modern technology!! Ann Gallot. Nelson is still in the 1900’s, like the NCC. Terry Beach. Come on, Nelson, give Richmond a break...it’s time you up-

graded. Raewynne Pedofski.

Freedom campers: Judging by the letters to the newspaper and other places on this subject, you would think Nelson was having a terrorist attack. I live on boat within 100 metres of the Council space created for campers.... yes, there are a handful or so of campers there, not 194 as suggested, with rampaging, drug-induced parties. No pooing on the ground, no yelling, etc, all very quiet. Perhaps these visitors raise people’s fears of disturbance to their secure middle-class comfort zones. So come on Nelsonians, how about a little tolerance and kindness! Robert Leslie. Our beaches are tops: Pleased to see Caroline Bay, Timaru made the list. I must say though Kaiteriteri and Rabbit Island Beach are so beautiful, more scenic. Tahuna Beach Nelson is very nice too. Jocelyn Palmer. Rabbit Island is awesome place for day trip and picnic lunch or BBQ meal and good swim on the beach. Tina Newton. That’s why we live here. Dave Trigg. Awesome. Nelson/Tasman/ Golden Bay district has so many wonderful beach choices. Spoilt for choice. So lucky. Sharon Fisher. Email editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

New leaders for Habitat Andrew Board

you get to that point and it’s all worth it because you know this family have a home where they can raise their family.” Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide organisation that aims to help people move into healthy homes. In Nelson, Habitat has built 23 homes over 20 years, while groups of Nelsonians have travelled around the world helping build hundreds of homes in places like Nepal and Cambodia. Rowan says the appointment of Glenn is a big step forward for the Nelson group. “In the past, the board has been very hands-on and done a lot of the work themselves, which has been fantastic. But having a single go-to person is a part of our growth and strategic plan. With someone like Glenn on board we'll have more opportunity to have a bigger impact.” If you’re interested in helping Habitat for Humanity, either as a volunteer or a business that would be keen to develop a relationship with the group, email Glenn at nelson@habitat.org.nz

When an accident with a steam steriliser left engineer Glenn Brewerton in hospital requiring skin grafts to a large part of his body, it gave him time to think what he wanted out of life. It turns out what he wanted was to give to those less fortunate than himself. In the years since he has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity as a project manager, help bring a medical ship from Japan back to Auckland to be refitted and sent to the Pacific to provide free health care, all the while continuing to work as a contract engineer. Century old tractors to be cranked up Simon Bloomberg

Senior reporter Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A rare 100-year-old tractor will be one of the many attractions at the Nelson Vintage Engine and Machinery Club’s annual show at the Higgins Heritage Park near Wakefield this weekend. Roger Quinney’s bright yellow R & P tractor could easily ended up on the scrap heap after spending “quite a few years” rusting away in a paddock on his Motupiko farm. But when Roger found out that the R & P was one of the rarest tractors in the world, he decided to restore it to its former glory, completing the makeover, including a new bright yellow paint job, in 2005-2006. Roger says the R & P, which stands for Ruggles and Parsons, was manufactured by the Republic Truck Company in Michigan, US in 1917. It was exported, along with 17 others, to New Zealand and was purchased by the Kerr family for their Kikawa farm in 1919. Roger’s father Lew subsequently bought it at auction in 1950 for 49 pounds to replace the horses he had been using for farm work

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. at Motupiko. The faithful old R & P was later replaced by a newer tractor and was put out to pasture before it was restored. “I remember driving it for the first time when I was about 12,” Roger says. “We used it for

ploughing and cultivating and general farm work as well as cutting up firewood. “When we got a new tractor, the R & P sat in the paddock for quite a while and then we put it in a shed. When I found out how

rare it was, I thought I’d better restore it so I brought it with me to Wakefield when we sold the farm in 2000.” Only about 200 R & P tractors were built before production ceased in 1920 and today there

are just three still working in the world. All three are in the South Island and Roger says they were all displayed for the first time at Rangiora A & P Show in 2006. Roger says the R & P cost around $US1400 new and had a three gears labelled low, plough, road. It had a top speed of around five miles an hour (8kmh). One of the show organisers Baden Biggs says the venerable R & P will be in good company with a single cylinder International and Samson Sieve Grip tractors also on display. Baden says the two century old tractors are both from the Tapawera district and the International is the only one of its kind in the world today. Baden says the show will feature an intriguing range of vintage tractors, steam engines and engines. There will be working displays of machinery, including a restored reaper-binder that will be having its first trial run since being restored, as well as food and refreshments and free jigger and steam engine rides. The show runs from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults with children under-13 free.

Organisers of the 2017 Sarau Festival say they’ll be sticking with their tried and trusted programme which has proven to be a recipe for success. This includes the cooking demonstration with local chef Miles Drewery and Sarau Festival’s photographic competition, which will no doubt provide some interesting snaps of the Moutere area thanks to experienced and beginner photographers. Duane Major and Adam Gard’ner, the team behind the Givealittle campaign to buy the Awaroa Beach, are encouraging people to sign up and take part in the Nelson Tasman Big Beach Clean. Organisations and individuals can register on the Department of Conservation website for the event, which has been scheduled for Saturday March 4 to coincide with Seaweek. Businesses and organisations that registered last December have been allocated sites, but there are still plenty of other sites available across all areas from Marahau to Cable Bay. Key sites that are still available include Kaiteriteri Beach, part of the Monaco peninsula and the coastline behind Nelson Golf Club.

WEDNESDAY 25 January 2017

Queen Street Upgrade set to begin On 7 February 2017, the largest capital project ever carried out in Tasman District will begin – the multimillion-dollar Queen Street Upgrade.

The changing street profile Before:

The upgrade is driven by the growing and changing demands on Richmond’s infrastructure. Extreme weather events, a rapid increase in population and evolving dynamics within the town (once a rural service centre that is increasingly being looked to as the retail heart of a thriving urban area) have all thrown an added burden on the spine of services that run beneath the commercial heart of Richmond – Queen Street. To respond to the new demands, the Tasman District Council will dig up Queen Street to install larger water and stormwater pipes. The water services were developed more than 50 years ago. They have lasted well but are no longer coping with the amount of water they need to carry.

After:

Lead contractor Hawkins Infrastructure will replace the street surface from shop front to shop front with the centre of the street lowered to better control floodwaters. In both 2011 and 2013, Richmond was hit by major floods. Properties on Queen Street were inundated with water, which flowed towards buildings from the slightly-raised crown of the road. At the same time as the other works, Chorus will install upgraded fibre, and extra ducts in anticipation of future levels of demand, and Network Tasman will renew essential cables.

Indicative future cross section through Queen Street.

What you need to know This is a major piece of work and there is no quick and easy way to do it. It will be carried out in stages, beginning in February 2017 and running through to 1 December 2017 when work will halt for the summer. Work will restart in February 2018 and is expected to be complete by the end of April 2018. Stage one is the section of street from Gladstone Road to Noel Leeming. Unfortunately there will be disruption and inconvenience to street occupiers and users. We ask for your patience – the end result is a

Queen Street Upgrade

long-term fix that will benefit everyone.

Bus services

Street access

Bus services will continue and the timetable will not change.

A new design As each stage of the upgrade is completed, the new street design will be put in place. The wider footpaths, narrower traffic carriageway and continuous smooth surface with no kerb and channel will contribute to slower traffic speeds and create a safer, more accessible and more pedestrian-focused space.

Building a vibrant and resilient Richmond Begins February 2017

Soundstage music and performing arts school has been a home away from home for Nelson’s talented kids for over 10 years. “When I first set up SOUNDSTAGE in 2006 my intention was to create a safe space where kids of all ages and abilities could come and spend time doing what they loved” says Jane Winter the schools founder (and Nelson raised herself). While the school has certainly produced its fair share of successful performers, that’s not what makes this place so unique, “Are we proud of the graduates who have gone on to the West End in London, or to successful careers in dance, music or TV and film? Of course, but more than just about getting better at singing or dancing or excelling in exams, Soundstage is about growing confidence, creating friendships and having fun”. This year, Nelson Academy of Dance will proudly celebrate its 41st anniversary after principal Gillian Francis established the dance school in 1977. From preschool to advanced levels, everyone is welcome at Nelson Academy of Dance which also features a dedicated boy’s dance class. Over the years, many students from the academy have gone on to enjoy successful careers in dance, including students being accepted into the New Zealand School of Dance, Whitireia, and even dance companies overseas. Providing tuition in ballet, contemporary and jazz, Nelson Academy of Dance also stages an annual production that involves all pupils, helping then gain vital stage experience, as well as holding end of year examinations.

With its Victorian Italianate architecture, Fellworth House is one of Nelson’s most admired historic houses - and now 138 years after it was built, it is on the market once again, with its owners hoping to keep it local. Built in 1879, Fellworth House was designed for one of Nelson’s early European colonists, John Sharp. After his death in 1919, it was bought by the Cawthron Trust and opened as the Cawthron Institute using funds bequeathed by philanthropist, Thomas Cawthron. It accommodated laboratories, a library and a museum, and was visited

by many dignitaries, including Sir Ernest Rutherford and HRH Prince Philip. After the Cawthron Institute relocated to Halifax Street, the house became a wedding and events venue and a backpacker’s hostel, until it was bought by Dave and Jill Harvey in 1999 who spent years restoring it. In 2007 it was sold to its current owners – a family trust headed by dentist Aleksandra Markicevic. As well as a dentistry business operating on site, Fellworth House has been used as a functions and events venue and also offers accommodation. Aleksandra’s son, Miki Djukanovic, says they have listed

Just a thought... Peter Somervell Lead Pastor, Grace Church Here we are again at the beginning of another New Year. 2016 is well and truly behind us. Some of us are wondering where the time went. A year seems like a long time until you get to the middle of September. Then it appears to be relatively short. We would all do ourselves a service if we considered how brief life on earth really is. All of us have a limited number of New Year’s Days. They may seem endless, but they’re not. We would be wise to live in light of this perspective. That’s where Psalm 90 comes in. In verse 12, Moses asks this of God: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Of all the mathematical problems, this is the most difficult. People can number their sheep and their livestock. They can estimate the revenue of their farms and their business with relative ease. They can count their cash, balance their accounts and calculate what their retirement income should be. And yet they foolishly imagine

they are immortal. They think their days are infinite and innumerable. Therefore, they do not number them. Andy Stanley tells the story of a man who bought 1300 marbles on his 50th birthday. He figured that, if he lives to be 75, he would have about 1300 Saturdays left. So every Saturday he goes and takes a marble out of that jar and throws it out. It’s a reminder to him that time is fleeting, and that he only has a short time left. That’s living in the light of eternity. That’s living with wisdom. Measure your days carefully. You are not immortal. You will not live forever. Your life is but a vapour – here one moment and gone the next. Then you will face God. That’s a very sobering thought, but important nonetheless. God has given you a certain amount of days to live and He has entrusted you with certain gifts and abilities. What are you doing with them? Are you using them for his glory the good of others? What will you offer back to God when he calls you to account? Don’t be foolish and live for the moment. Live as if your last day is tomorrow.

Children learn how to be safe around dogs Simon Bloomberg A group of young children will be a lot safer and more confident around dogs after learning some of the tricks of the trade from dog behaviour expert Vikki Pickering at the Richmond Town Hall. Vikki, who owns You and Your Dog, held a fun, interactive talk for the nine children and their parents on Tuesday. Statistics show that a high percentage of reported dog bites are inflicted on children and Vikki was running the demonstration to show the children how to safe-

ly interact with dogs. Using a life-like toy dog, Vikki showed the children how to recognise the subtle signs exhibited by dogs that indicate if they are threatened or happy. “Dogs don’t generally bite out of the blue, it’s more often that kids and parents aren’t aware of dog body language,” Vikki says. “It’s also what is, or isn’t, appropriate behaviour of children around dogs. “Things like not just going up to a dog you don’t know and patting it, even if it looks friendly. It’s always really important to ask

the owner first. “Also, if a bouncy dogs runs at you, you need to stand tall and still like a tree and not run away. And you never pat a dog you don’t know on the head - you have to pat them from collar to tail.” Vikki had her own dog Asha at the session and showed the children a few fun activities that they could do at home with their own dogs. The demonstration was free and Vikki is planning another at the Richmond Town Hall this Thursday.

Nelson Giants sign new coach Sports Editor

sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz sports@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The Mike Pero Nelson Giants have announced Australianbased Alan McAughtry as their new head coach for the upcoming New Zealand National Basketball League season. The veteran coach replaces Tim Fanning, who took up an assistant coaching role in Israel during the off-season. Alan has a background in developing youth players through his Director of Coaching role at Diamond Valley Basketball Club in Melbourne. He is currently the assistant coach for WNBL team the Melbourne Boomers, which includes Nelson’s Jess Bygate, and the Australian Under-19 team which will compete in the World Champs in July. Alan has also coached in the SEABL competition with the Frankstown Blues.

SportS Golf Greenacres golfer Ryan Chisnall lost his first round match on the first playoff hole to world amateur number 46 and Australian rep Travis Symth at the Australian Amateur Golf Championships. Ryan had to play a 36-hole qualifying event just to make the field and ended up third to easily ensure qualification. In a closely-fought tussle Travis made birdie on the first sudden death hole to take the match.

“Getting an opportunity to be the Head Coach of a club is always exciting and an honour, to do that at a club like the Mike Pero Nelson Giants just adds to that excitement.

New Mike Pero Nelson Giants coach Alan McAughtry will arrive for the 2017 season in February. Photo Supplied. “Having coached against many New Zealand players and teams in my time with Vic Metro and the various National Junior Men’s

teams, I have grown to really appreciate the passion and commitment New Zealand players play with and I am looking forward to working with the staff and players and the community to help value -add to an already rich history,” Alan says. “It is a big move for me and my family are fully supportive of the move, getting to work with the likes of Phill Jones is just an incredible opportunity “ Director of on-court operations Phil Jones is confident Alan has all the skills to return the team to the playoffs this season. “Alan is an experienced coach and has had a wide range of roles over a long coaching career that appealed to us. “He likes to develop youth, which has always been important to the Nelson Giants, but also has top-level experience with Frankstown, the Melbourne Boomers, and Australian age groups teams. We believe he is also the right fit for our culture. “The Giants are iconic in this

Three events will be held over three days to find the country’s top rider in a test of skill, fitness, nerve and endurance. The downhill will be held on Fringed Hill on Saturday with the enduro on three courses in the Maitai Valley on Sunday and the Old Skool crosscountry around a single loop on the Codgers trails on Monday. The first female Top Gun and first male Top Gun will win each $1000.

After looking at options, a serviced apartment meant that Dorrie could continue to live independently, with help at hand. There’s always people close by and Dorrie is enjoying the new friendships she has formed at Summerset.

“I KNOW MUM’S SAFE, COSY AND CONTENT.”

Two imports, in Curtis Washington and Joe Slocum have also signed on. The pre-season programme will start shortly and be managed by Claire Dallison, Brendon Bailey, and Phill Jones. Alan will arrive in Nelson on February 22 after the completion of the Melbourne Boomers season.

Mike’s life on the water Jacob Page Nelson’s Mike Rose has always had an affinity for the sea. A keen surfer who has spent countless days chasing the waves around the world, Mike has swapped surf board for sailing yacht in recent years. The builder by trade is still having a ball at sea even with two artificial hips brought on by his daytime job. The competitive streak is still there and despite his first day of racing being a washout on Sunday, Mike is keen to win a few keeler races at the Nelson Weekly Regatta before the event ends on Sunday. He’s competed in every year of the event and believes he has the skills and crew to be a winner before the week has concluded. Mike purchased his Bruce Farrdesigned boat almost a decade ago thanks to his brother’s keen eye for yachts as a career sailor and his wife’s ability to write a cheque. “My brother asked if I wanted to go halves in a yacht. It was about $50,000 so I scraped together the $25,000 we needed. We had enough overdraft to cover it but I was away in Indonesia surfing so my brother put the deal together and my wife wrote the cheque and she’s barely spent an hour on the boat ever since.”

Missy Hearfield and Mike Rose will sail the Waikawa to Tarakohe event together in March. The first time event covers 85 miles and will challenge the duo to work constantly to keep the boat on course. Photo Jacob Page. Mike says he’s suited to sailing as he just goes where the wind blows. “I’ve always loved sea water and the serenity that goes with it. It’s also a challenge to move the boat around. Mike also enjoys the social side of sailing, whether it’s cruising around the Abel Tasman region or sharing a drink with fellow competitors after a race to Wel-

lington. “We can forget how pleasurable it is to go out for a sail. Some Wednesdays, years ago, we used to do a thing where anyone who turned up could come and have a sail on one of the boats. It became quite a big thing - the power of word of mouth was on display and it was great to give all these people a chance to experience what it’s like on the water.”

Mike and Missy Hearfield will compete in the first ever Waikawa to Tarakohe 85 mile two-hander race in March. “That’s our next wee challenge and it could be quite demanding in patches but it will be a fun challenge.” Five races for the trailer sailors and sports boats were raced on Saturday before 30 knot winds and three metre swells cancelled

 Know where your money is going each week and reduce your spending in order to address your debt. Sorted.org.nz has an excellent ‘money-planner’ tool to help you work this out.  Sort your bills into an order of priority. Bills for essential things like rent and power should be paid first; high interest debts are the next priority; low interest or interest free debts such as those you might have with family are less of a priority.  Ask for help from family or friends.  Look for ways to increase your income.  Sell assets to free up some cash.  Call your creditors and make repayment arrangements. Creditors are much more likely to be flexible if you talk to them instead of just stopping payments.  If you do not have enough money to go around all your creditors, talk to a Budget Advisor. They may be able to help you come up with a solution. Contact us for one-to-one advice on managing your bills or budget. We offer free, confidential advice for everyone.

WEDNESDAY 25 January 2017

Speedway avoids weather to crown GP champ Jody ‘The Professor’ Scott Former New Zealand champion Daniel Eggleton made the most of a one night Sprint Car New Zealand Grand Prix event in Nelson to take the title, on Friday. Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway adapted to the predicted weather bomb that drenched the Tasman area over the weekend to successfully run the Sprintcar Grand Prix, a key decision by the club to rejig the format to run the title on Friday night only meant Saturday’s rainout didn’t have an impact on the championship.. Other tracks were not so lucky and now have to reschedule race meetings over the coming weeks. The drivers were keen to make sure the Grand Prix had a conclusion rather than risking the weather and have to travel back from around New Zealand. The new format had four groups race each other to find the top 12 drivers to go thru to the main final, a further 6 drivers came out of the B main race to get the final 18 cars for the 25 lap final. The first heat saw a win to local driver Greg Teece, who led from the start, but a flat tyre in the later race scuppered his chances of qualifying for the final,

Simon Reiter was another local whose night was ended in spectacular fashion, with a roll over in the back straight. The North Island drivers were quick to work out where the best race line was with many of the cars running the high line, almost brushing the wall as they came out of the corners, The track was in superb condi-

tion and even the brief rain that fell delaying the meeting midway only enhanced the track conditions. The racing was pretty clean in the heats with the first caution only coming in the third race. New Zealand Champion Jamie Larsen had a lucky escape when he got a bit wide, he ended up on his 2 right wheels but the clay

cushion saved him from rolling over. Not so lucky were Steve Duff Jr, ex Black cap Nathan Astle and local Kris Gerard, who all rolled together in the first corner of the opening lap of the final. Former New Zealand champions Daniel Eggleton and Jamie McDonald were tied on points for the final race, a coin toss gave Daniel the positional choice. He

controlled the start and was never challenged throughout the race to take the title. The Stock cars ran best pairs, they stirred it up a bit in the final heat with a bit of wall riding, 217n Keightley Teece, fresh from finishing fifth at the New Zealand title, decided to pick on a few cars. The winners of the pairs were Dylan Clarke and John Everett. The Productions ran round two of the club championship, Jono Sutton claiming the round win on 50 points. Hamish Carter won all 3 Youth Ministock races while Jayden Corkill picked up another feature win in the T.Q’s. Saturday night's racing was predictably called off after the wet weather struck as expected. It was a credit to all involved, who managed to ensure Friday night went ahead and the national title racing could be completed without hassle for the large crowd that turned up. This week's meeting is the 75th New Zealand Midget title, running over Friday and Saturday night, American and Australian drivers will be battling the top Kiwi drivers to become the national champion, over two exciting nights of racing expected with a worldclass field.
