Dam price escalates The future of the controversial Waimea Dam is in jeopardy after latest figures show the total cost could be as much as $26 million more than estimated in 2015. Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says the council has been “blindsided” by the new fig-

page 16-17

ures and says unless a solution can be found to close the gap, the dam won’t go ahead. “I am gutted about this, but I know that security of water supply is increasingly becoming a critical issue, locally and globally,” says Richard. “The Waimea water

augmentation dam represents a complete solution to urban and rural water supply for the Richmond, Brightwater, Mapua and Waimea areas for generations to come.” The 2015 budget estimate for the dam construction was

$49,800,000 and the Early Contractor Involvement agreed final project cost is $68,114,000, therefore a difference of around $18m. There are other workstreams still to be finalised and TDC has reason to believe those other costs are likely to be in the order of

$8m over the estimate. Bringing the total coast to $26m more than estimated in 2015. Objectors of the dam, led by Water Information Network (WIN) are staging a protest at the council office in Richmond on Thursday, August 9.

Car rally ignores permit restrictions Emily Beaumont Reporter

emily@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Allegations have been made against the organisers of the MRF Mainland Series 2018 for rally car racing on an unpermitted stretch of road. Organised by Nelson Car Club’s Phil Collins for Saturday July 14, the fifth round of racing started and finished in Brightwater, but it was the racing on TadmorGlenhope Rd that has the Tasman District Council considering legal action against the rally organisers. Long-time resident of the road and proud motorsport enthusiast, Harvey Hay, was aware of the rally in his area and the subsequent road closures in place.

but three, rally cars appear rapidly behind him. “The mere fact they were going the same way as me avoided an accident,” says Harvey. With 16 residents at his area of the road, Harvey says the car club’s blatant disregard for the rules could have led to a serious accident. “They were told not to, but went ahead anyway.” Rally organiser Phil Collins says, “people are getting the facts wrong, we had permits for the part of road we raced on”. However, the TDC disputes this and says they denied an extension to the permit for that section due to time constraints, something they say organisers were aware of. A meeting was planned between rally organisers and TDC for yesterday afternoon, the outcome of which we’ll have next week.

Rural landowners beware!

Police are seeking information on a green Mazda Demio, and its two male and female occupants. The vehicle is being used to target rural properties for items

such as tools, machinery, trailers and motorcycles. The first letter of the registration is ‘J’. There have been sightings over the weekend in the surrounding district, and police are ask-

ing people to report any sightings or suspicious behaviour to the local police. If you have any information on the car or its occupants, please call 03 5439500.

Public urged to avoid outdoor fires It’s a good idea to avoid lighting outdoor fires during the winter as calm, clear, cold days don’t allow smoke to rise and disperse. Instead, the smoke sits low to the ground and can cause significant negative health effects, while odour and ash can also cause a nuisance for neighbours. There are rules for outdoor fires in our district, as well as good-practise guidelines that everyone lighting an outdoor

fire must follow. And remember, all outdoor fires in Tasman District, at any time of year, require a permit from Nelson Tasman Fire Emergency New Zealand. Outdoor burns are banned year-round in Richmond township and an outdoor fire ban is in place from June 1 to September 1 in all other Tasman townships and the outskirts of Richmond. The exception is if you are burning

diseased horticultural crops. If you’re outside the fire ban areas and must conduct an outdoor burn, continously check the weather conditions throughout the burn. Only burn well-seasoned, dry vegetation and stack it loosely, and burns may only take place between 10am-4pm. Never leave a fire to smoulder overnight and minimize the frequency and number of fires as much as possible.

Richmond woman Aleisha Hart bravely embarked into unchartered territory last September when she was implanted with an embryo on a surrogacy journey for two Auckland men. “There’s always been something inside of me interested in these things,” says Aleisha. Answering a gay couple’s Facebook advertisement in July 2016, for a surrogate to help make their dreams of becoming a family a reality, Aleisha was soon deemed “the one”. The 32-year-old was single, has two children, and her kind and caring nature alongside her work as a paramedic made her Christian Newman and husband Mark Edwards ideal surrogate. “There was never anything that made me feel like I shouldn’t do it. I have absolutely no regrets. It’s a pretty amazing feeling now,” says Aleisha. The lengthy process that involved medical and psychiatric tests and numerous legalities, culminated

Kerr Bay ponding Men rescued from area filled in swollen Waimea The decision was made, after River Number of elderly residents to double Tasman’s continuing popularity as a retirement destination will see the number of residents aged over 65 nearly double in twenty years. As the second-oldest population in the country, we currently have 11,100 over 65-year-olds and that figure is expected to reach 20,500 by 2038. Currently, there are estimated to be more people aged over 65 living in the region, than there are children aged under 15. Tasman District Council is predicting this increase will present them with implications, as well as the wider community and economy. The TDC is welcoming suggestions for making Tasman more age-friendly and says members of the public can source the report and feedback forms from libraries, service centres and online at www.tasman/govt/nz/link/agefriendly Feedback is required by August 15.

much advice and community consultation, to fill in the ponding area in Kerr Bay. Excess fill has been made available after culvert installations in the area, which was put into place after the topsoil was removed from the pooling site. Installed fences will remain until spring, where the topsoil will be reinstated and reseeded. This will enable the area to be returned to an open area for recreational enjoyment.

A swift-water rescue team was deployed on Saturday, July 21, to rescue two men from the Waimea River, between O’Çonnor Rd and River Rd, Appleby. There had been heavy rain in the area earlier in the day. The men were stranded on the roof of their 4x4 Nissan Safari around 11.30pm after getting into difficulty in the swollen river. The men aged 27 and 29 were

declared safe at 12.45am and taken to hospital with the early effects of hypothermia. The vehicle eventually sank but was later discovered. “While we are pleased these men are safe, we warn people not to enter swollen waterways and flooded rivers. Not only do people put themselves in jeopardy, they put rescue teams in danger,” says senior sergeant John Price. Police would like to thank everyone involved in this rescue and appreciate the support from others who were put on standby to assist.

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake was felt across the region and much of central New Zealand, on Sunday July 22. The quake struck 20km east of Nelson, at a depth 73km, at 3.14pm on Sunday, GeoNet said. Many people reported online that they could ‘hear it, before they felt it’. Remember to drop, cover and hold. Stay indoors till the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit.

Brightwater’s future to be discussed Tasman District Council will be at the Brightwater Community Association meeting on Monday, August 6. Proposed rezoning of land in Brightwater will be explained, including part of the Nelson Diocesan Church land. Residents are encouraged to attend and have a say in shaping Brightwater for future families, children and grandchildren. The meeting will take place at 7.30pm in the staff room of Brightwater School. The Brightwater Community Association welcomes new members and say they’re always keen to have a wide representation of members. Any queries can be directed on email to secretary.bgwca@gmail.com

‘Mutiny on the bounty’ inspires Amy Russ

Oakwood resident Wayne Grieg is no stranger to scale model building. It has been more than 45 years since he first started building his impressive 7m x 3m, split-level model railway, complete with working televisions. However, in 2003, after a trip to Norfolk Island, Wayne’s hobby took a slightly different turn, Wayne and his wife Jo fell in love with the island and its deep nautical history. “The Bounty, I discovered from conversations on Norfolk Island, is the greatest story of determination and compromising effort,” says Wayne, “The story of how in 1789 Captain William Bligh and 18 of his crew were set adrift off the island of Tofua by Fletcher Christian, and how Bligh managed to get his men to Timor, is the most incredible sea saga that, in my view, outweighs Shackleton.” Wayne started researching the infamous mutiny, and in 2004 embarked on what was meant to be a ‘2-year project’, his 1:48 scale of the HMS Bounty. Working off plans from a John McKay book, ‘Anatomy of the Ship’, Wayne says when the model is finished it will

Letter to the Editor sales@waimeaweekly.co.nz Speed camera needed: It would seem a good idea for the Council to put a speed camera under the over-bridge on the ‘diversion’. Improves safety as well. This may help drivers to keep within the speed limits--and also be a good revenue earner, as Invercargill have found out. David Cliff

Clover Rd repairs: Hi, the Clover Road “repairs” look to me like the muchvaunted market forces at work. Call for tenders, choose the cheapest. These contractors make a total dog’s breakfast which then takes megadollars and time to get right. A situation that is becoming all too common these days. Anthony Ensor

Renowned a cappella singing coach in town Richmond women are joining their counterparts of the Nelson Bays Harmony this weekend in Nelson to enjoy tutelage by one of the world’s best a cappella singing coaches. Virginia Humphrey-Taylor is coming to do what she does best; pass on her passion for a capella, singing to women who really love to sing. She will spend two full days encouraging and teaching the women of Nelson Bays Harmony in their craft of barbershop a cappella singing. With friendship and support core values for the chorus group member, Trish Armstrong says, “there’ll be plenty of laughter along the way, as well as great vocal training”. Virginia is a full time vocal coach and the musical director of the renowned 130-member Christchurch City Chorus. After winning

the New Zealand national competitions they went on to represent New Zealand in Las Vegas in 2016, coming an impressive 5th in the world! Virginia is also the bass component of the quartet ‘L’Attitude which became New Zealand 2017 champions and with whom she travelled to Las Vegas again representing New Zealand in the quartet section of the international Sweet Adeline competitions. Nelson Bays Harmony director Kathy Jamison says, “it’s a thrill to work with Virginia and see each member of our chorus growing into the best singer they can be and loving it”. *Nelson Bays Harmony meet on Thursdays 7pm at Club Waimea. The next opportunity to sing with the chorus is an 8-week a cappella night class, beginning on August, 9. Visit www. nelsonharmony.org.nz for details.

Jazz and soul evening for the Boathouse Amy Russ Reporter

amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A fund-raiser event, to help rebuild one of the region’s most iconic buildings, is gearing up for Friday, July 27, at the ‘Jazz and Soul for the Boathouse’ concert, at The Granary in Founders Park. Amie-Jo Trayes, manager for The Boathouse Nelson says, “we want to keep the momentum of The Boathouse still alive. The building holds a lot of sentiment for many people in the region, couples have met here, and people have been married here, it holds a lot of history.” Meeting with Nelson Jazz Club Big Band musical director Simon Williams and well-known Nelson performer Annabel Boyes, along with Amie-Jo, they collaborated closely to bring the event together. Simon says the project is very close to his heart. “We used to play there at least twice a year, I’ve got quite a long history with the place that goes back to the 80’s, it’s pretty special.” Both Sun City Soul and Nelson Jazz Club Big Band will be playing at the gig, and an all-expensespaid night away at Awaroa Lodge is up for raffle. All funds raised will go towards future-proofing the heritage building, upgrading and repairs. “There is a significant difference

The Boathouse Nelson has been undergoing huge restoration work after it was damaged in exCyclone Fehi, back in February. Inset: The Boathouse Nelson’s rebuild manager Ali Howard, and manager Amie-Jo Trayes, with the building’s project manager Duncan Francis and You-Build Limited owner Matt Thomas. Photos: Amy Russ. between what insurance covers and what you unearth in a rebuilding process. There has been a lot of structural work done, micro-cleaning, joists and bearers, but getting the floor down is a huge deal. We are re-using as much as possible and are looking

at putting in gangway entrances to allow water to get through in the future.” Amie-Jo says the support from the community has been incredible, “From Trudi Wilson and Christina Olsen, who organised the Boathouse Benefit Concert at The Playhouse, Mel

Parsons who contacted us, wanting to do a benefit concert in August at the Theatre Royal, the committee members who have all given their time and jumped on board, and our many sponsors and donors. People have been amazing. We have been donated

goods to support the events and Fairfield House and the Theatre Royal have both offered us their venues free of charge. We have been donated an office to work from, architects have donated their time, business have given our staff jobs while we rebuild, everybody wants to be involved, everyone wants to be here, it is just unbelievable.” Matt Thomas, owner of You-Build Nelson, says the project is looking on track for the proposed spring opening, “It has been a fascinating project since day one, working around the aftermath of Cyclone Gita, tides and extreme weather conditions and, of course, the perfect Nelson winter days. We do a lot of Heritage and restoration work, but this has been very unique job for our team. Ensuring the original character was kept is always our primary goal. It has been a great privilege to work alongside the Boathouse Rebuild Committee on such an iconic building that means so much to our community.” Waimea Weekly and The Boathouse Nelson are giving away two double passes to the event, simply go to our Facebook page and follow the instructions. www. facebook.com/WaimeaWeekly. Green Hornet Landscaping is going from strength to strength. Between them, business owners James Maxwell and Gareth Allen have landscaped hundreds of properties and they are busier than ever! With the company in growth mode, it has been a great time for the business to employ a qualified builder in recent months. “It’s something other landscapers don’t generally offer,” says co-owner James Maxwell. “Our builder is trade qualified, and we have built our team around suitably qualified and experienced landscapers. Green Hornet Landscaping is going well because we have

built a very efficient team of guys. We also have a concrete placer onboard, who is also an experienced landscaper, and we have just hired an operations and admin manager who oversees our back of house stuff.” The landscapers at Green Hornet do all aspects of exterior building work; decks, pergolas, retaining walls and so on. “With another builder onboard, we now have two builders who work alongside the landscapers, together with myself and my business partner Gareth. We have a really good tiered system which means we are able to build it better, and

build it faster.” Green Hornet Landscaping is as busy as ever, so it pays to give them a call, and one of its team will pop around within a week or two prior to the planning stage to review, estimate and quote the work you require. “We break it down to the scope of the work and create a cost estimate, and build a budget around it. Often with landscapes, over a three to four week period there will be changes that happen along the way, based on what the client wants.” For more information, contact the team at Green Hornet Landscaping today on 022 1979 11.

Hokianga book launched Richmond kuia and teacher of te reo Māori at Waimea College, Mrs Āniwa Davey, blessed Nelson historian and author Gary Clover’s new book on culture change and Maori conversion in the Hokianga, “Collision, Compromise and Conversion during the Wesleyan Hokianga Mission, 1827-1855”. The book was encased in a beautifully closely woven flax kité, a taonga gifted to Gary by Ms Cindy Batt, an iwi researcher and specialist librarian at Nelson’s Elmer Turner Library. The kité was woven by Cindy’s mother.

In launching Gary’s book, Nelson-based Anglican Church Missionary Society historian Russell J. Smith declared it “will be, I’m sure, the standard work on this subject”. “Collision, Compromise and Conversion” was designed and produced by local Nelson printing firm Copy Press, and privately published by Gary with large financial input from Rev David Bush, the Methodist Church’s General Secretary. “I am very grateful and delighted by the support and accolades I have received for my book,” says Gary. “But I’m very mindful that, just as it takes a village to raise

a child, it takes a community of researchers, archivists, librarians, book designers, printers, binders, publishers, and much family support, to produce a book of this nature. I have been greatly blessed by all their encouragement and help.” The launch took place at the Stoke Methodist Church on Sunday, July 8. Around 45 family members and supporters from near and far braved the wild, stormy afternoon to attend. It concluded with a twentyminute power point presentation of some of the characters and issues Gary’s book covers.

Wattie Mortimer and Brian Erasmus greeted the guests at the Lake Rotoiti Retro Ball. A dual event of which $2700 was raised for First Response Equipment for the Lake Rotoiti Voluntary Rural Fire Force, and to honour the memory of beloved community member Betty Butters who sadly passed away on March 2. Jane McConochie, one of the organisers, says, “Betty made it very clear that she wanted us to dance, and to celebrate her life, and we felt this was an appropriate time to do so.” The fund-raiser was held in the community hall, and Wattie says the amount raised was a fantastic effort from all involved. Richmond netball fall to strong Stoke A few key players were absent from the Richmond F45 lineup against Stoke in Thursday night’s premier netball game at Saxton Stadium. The athletes gave a solid performance but failed to convert against a well-versed Stoke side. It was a good matchup in the Stoke shooting circle, Amy Cunningham defending against proficient shooter Megan Thompson. Amy was a nuisance in the opening stanza, forcing a held ball and several turnovers in the Stoke circle. Richmond F45’s shooters also started

effectively, with accurate points conversion by Kathleen Thornalley and Belinda Koloamatangi. Having ended the first quarter 10-17 in Stoke’s favour, Richmond F45’s shooters came out firing in the second quarter, scoring three consecutive shots off the back of a well-timed intercept by Amy. McKenzie Orange performed well at wing defence, generating turnover ball in connection with the defensive unit, combined with experienced mid-courters Sharon Finch and Lisa Book, entering half time

with a score of 26-34. Jelena Vucinic was quick to snaffle loose balls throughout the court and Kathleen showed great form in the shooters circle. Despite a stronger second quarter and a determined defensive effort, Stoke continued to extend the lead. Richmond fell away in the last two quarters with Stoke capitalizing on the height of Megan Thompson and adding to their score total. Richmond was not quite able to compete fully for all four quarters and will be disappointed with the score blow-out, ending the game 40-79.

Young motocross rider selected by Yamaha for showcase event Amy Russ Reporter

amy@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Waimea student Wills Harvey was one of only two kiwis chosen by Yamaha to compete at the Australian Motocross Nationals 2018 recently. Yamaha put a call out to its nationwide dealer, for recommended young riders, to showcase the companies brand new YZ65 model at the event in Newcastle, Australia. The company ran a special promotional piece for the event, for the release of their newest model, and Wills, along with 30 other junior class riders, raced in the all-expenses paid competition. For Wills it was an amazing opportunity, he has been riding motocross since he was six and has dreamt of being a pro motocross rider for as long as he can remember. Practising every chance he can, at different tracks around the region, Wills lives and breathes motocross and supercross. Mum Ellie Harvey says the weekend was brilliant and Wills took it all in his stride, “it was the most amazing weekend you could possibly imagine! It was a massive event and Wills soaked up every minute of it. He did really well, competing in three races

all up, coming 5th, 6th and 3rd and winning 4th overall.” When Filco Farm and Sport nominated the Harvey family, Ellie says they were ‘absolutely stoked’, “I was so excited that Wills was given the opportunity.” Dave Filer, owner of Filco Farm and Sport, says that, for him, ‘it was an honour to nominate the Harveys’. The criteria for the nominations was that it had to be a dedicated family, a deserving family. The Harvey family work extremely hard and mum puts her heart and soul into whatever she does. Henry and Wills are so humble and appreciative of everything, it is fantastic to see in this day and age. Wills is an absolute young gentleman and is completely deserving of the opportunity. We wanted to do something for them, for all the effort that they put into everything. They may not be world champs, but they are local champs to us.” The biggest supporters of Wills, his family, are also his inspiration, “I look up to my brother Henry, he rides too, he does all of my mechanical work and helps me clean my bike, he is the best.” “My coach, Bryan Heaphy, is really supportive too. He’s really nice and encouraging, and he makes training fun.”

Nelson Matters

Proud to support the Nelson Motor Show

There is no area of health care as challenging for families, doctors, nurses and our District Health Board as mental health. Local problems include the awful case where a psychotic man presented at our hospital late last year, was unattended and who subsequently left and violently attacked and raped an innocent Nelson woman. Last week we had the report released on the tragic death of the 20 year old autistic Marlborough woman at the hand of her mother as sole caregiver. There is also the ongoing controversy over the changes to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health afterhours service.

The problem is not unique to Nelson or New Zealand. Most Western countries are seeing strong increases in demand for mental health services. There is evidence the increased prevalence of drugs like methamphetamine or ‘P’ is contributing. Some academics have also pointed to a connection to modern technology and social media that make people more vulnerable to bullying and less able to escape. Whatever the reason, we need to improve our services to cope with the increased demand. I am seeing the problems in my Nelson constituency work. Families are critical of not being able

to get access to mental health services. An increasing number of Police callouts are for people with mental health issues. I am also worried about high turnover of our mental health staff. National responded to these mental health challenges with a $100 million package of new initiatives in the 2017 Budget. It is fair criticism that we should have acted earlier, but the package was sound. Designed by experts in the field, it had mental health nurses attending 111 callouts alongside police and paramedics. I am disappointed that the new Government choose to cancel it. I hope they might reconsider after the

Mental Health Inquiry is concluded. I met last week with our DHB Chair and CEO and senior management. I commend them for the change in having mental health professionals now available at Accident and Emergency 24/7. I am particularly keen to see progress on more supported living beds being available, more immediate support for ‘P’ addicts and proposals for increased support for eating disorders. I also advocate a national rethink of the policy of deinstitutionalisation and community care. I am not talking about a return to the 1970s of having hundreds of

people in large institutions like Ngawhatu. We have a small group of high need high risk individuals who are not coping. They are ending up homeless or in prison. These people need supervision and supported living where they cannot harm themselves or others. National took the initiative last week to establish a cross-party group to focus on improving New Zealand’s mental health services. Issues like New Zealand’s ugly suicide rates transcend party politics. Our ambition is to help drive the policy changes needed to improve services and get families the support they need. Advt.

The Tasman United Academy (TUA) recently took 26 players to compete in the Alan Fraser Memorial Tournament, run by Waimak United in Christchurch, this month. The junior squad, who were the same players crowned as last year’s South Island Champions, dominated all games they competed in to retain their Championship title. And the senior squad managed to control their gameplay throughout and came away with the senior title. Coach Diarmuid Brazendale

says the girls combined “good individual skills, with an exceptional team pattern, that no other side could successfully combat.” The TUA Juniors play their Saturday football together in the stronger boys league, and Diarmuid says, “that this level of physicality meant that the girls were able to technically and physically dominate the teams at tournament.” “Playing and training together at such an intensive level has meant that the girls in this group have made considerable development in their technical and tactical ability

over the last year.” This tournament was the first time the senior team had played together, as usually they play Saturday football for a range of clubs and colleges. “It is to their credit,” says their coach, “that they were able to transfer their TUA training into game situations as well as they did, against teams that have played together all season.” One of the most exciting aspects of the TUA seniors is that we have incorporated players from Marlborough to Golden Bay in a truly united Tasman squad.”

Louise Kelly recently spent six months overseas, two months in Scotland and four months in Budapest, at an Olympic training centre and competing in the junior European circuit. The 20-year-old brown belt has been training in Judo for nine years and has an impressive medal collection to boot. The first to be crowned New Zealands strongest woman at the Richmond A & P show, in an event run by Luke Slotemaker in 2016 - she came runner-up in the event in 2017 – Louise has competed in strength training events and many charity events, she is one tough nut. A swimmer from an early age who trained at Richmonds Aquatic Centre, Louise’s favourite moment in Judo was competing at the junior world champs in Croatia last year. “Representing New Zealand was amazing, unfortunately I lost to Japan, but it was a great experience and learning curve.” Now solely competing in senior categories the bar has been raised, last year was a big year competing and training, and this year is set to be even bigger and more expensive. Judo, like many other minor sports in New Zealand, is completely self-funded. Louise says a year of judo roughly costs around $10,000 for competition fees, flights and accommodation. She hopes to be achieving her

Waimea interclub teams through to Nelson Bays squash finals at home

A Waimea player (left) off-loads the ball during Saturday’s muddy game against Collingwood. Photo: ShutterSport.

HLS Waimea Old Boys RFC Rugby Round Up The HLS Waimea Senior B Rugby side, coached by Scott McKenzie and Luke Thelin, has made the final of the Tasman Rugby Unions division 2 competition with a very good win in their semi-final away match to Collingwood, 15-12. Conditions were atrocious, with torrential rain at times during the game. Both teams had a willingness to attack and this made for an entertaining fixture, as both teams made mistakes due to the conditions, but both kept trying to play attacking rugby for the full 80 minutes. HLS Waimea in 2018 are a

very young side with a smattering of experienced players and have developed into a very tight unit that play for each other and have steadily improved as the season has unfolded. Strong games by consistent performers in the forwards, Tommy Williams and Tim Fensom, and halfbacks Tom Crosbie and Chris King, meant Waimea played on the front foot with good direction throughout the game. Waimea led at the break 10 points to 5. But an early converted second-half try by Collingwood meant that at 12–10, Waimea was going to

have to be patient and build phases to counter a resilient home team’s defence. After long sustained bouts of pressure, Collingwood finally succumbed to a try scored by Waimea’s fullback Shane Laurence. Waimea played very intelligent rugby to close the game out for the final 10 minutes. They now look forward to an exciting final against local rivals Wanderers this Saturday. Scorers for HLS Waimea Old Boys RFC were tries to flanker Travis Clare and fullback Shane Laurence and a penalty and a conversion to 1st five eight Chris King.

Three Waimea teams contested the semi-finals of the Nelson Bays squash interclub competiton last week. In the mens, Waimea 2 played Nelson 1, and Waimea 3 played Motueka 1. In the ladies, Waimea 2 played Takaka 1. Mens team Waimea 3 weren’t able to get through in a very tight competition, with the final match score 6-6 they lost in countback 156-139. The two other Waimea teams achieved better results to win through to the finals. Waimea 2 played Nelson 1 at Nelson. No 4 Logan McCrae didn’t fire against opponent Nick Carter, losing 3-0. However No. 3 Liam Gale evened the matches by winning 3-0. No 2 Martin Ferguson then beat John Blakely 3-1 in arguably his best performance of the season. No. 1 Brendon Whitley also beat Mike Amai 3-1 to set up a comfortable team win 9-5. The Waimea 2 ladies match against

Takaka was much closer, No 4 Rebecca Gibb beat her opponent Tiffany Price 3-0, Nicola Pilkington lost her match 0-3 against Kylie Henry, and Debbie McCrae also lost 3-0 against Kayla Harvey. It came down to No 1 Susan O’Connell in the final match and her experience and skill was too much for opponent Susan Netto, winning 3-0. With the score 6-6 in matches, the Waimea ladies won in countback 146-136. The finals will be held at Club Waimea next week. In the mens Waimea 2 will meet Motueka 1, and in the ladies Waimea 2 will play Motueka 1. Saturday Club day at the Waimea squash complex was very busy. Along with the usual crowd of members and visitors, a number of finals team members turned up for a practice hit and to burn off some energy. Social singles matches inevitably turned to doubles later in the afternoon, which is always great fun.

Gutsy Giants pip Saints in overtime Jonty Dine

They needed extra time to do it, but the Nelson Giants knocked off the Wellington Saints 90-87 in a thriller at the Hangar on Saturday, July 21. Locked up at 82 apiece after forty minutes of frenetic basketball, the Giants held their nerve in a tense final five minutes to announce themselves as serious title contenders. Damon Heuir led the way for the hosts, topping the point scoring charts with 30, also nabbing five turnovers and four rebounds. “It was a really gutsy effort, especially down the stretch in overtime, we really lifted our defence and came up with some massive shots.” The Cairns Taipan drained half a dozen three pointers in his man of the match performance. “I didn’t shoot the ball very well this week, so I was happy to see a few go down early.” Damon says while they will take plenty of confidence from the win, there is still plenty of work to do.

“It’s really good to play that way at the end of the season. It’s a big win, but we’re still taking it one game at a time.” The first meeting between the two sides this season also doubled as a top of the table clash. The Giants were without Tall Black star Finn Delany who was sitting out a second consecutive match with a groin injury. It was a bumper atmosphere at the Trafalgar Centre, which was only 97 fans short of a full house. The hosts maintained a narrow lead throughout the first two periods, before LJ Peak nailed a three pointer right on the buzzer which managed to steal the lead for the Saints at three-quarter time. Tohi Smith-Milner made his presence felt at both ends of the court, netting 15 points and nabbing 8 rebounds, while Jerry Evans Jnr contributed 23 rebounds in total. The Saints put up three shots in the dying seconds of the fourth, all three rolling off the rim, forcing over-time for the first time at the Hangar this season.

In the final minute of the extra period, it was still anyone’s ball game, Damon putting Nelson ahead by one with 36 seconds remaining, before a Tohi lay-up made it a three point margin as the Giants’ faithful erupted. The Saints had a final chance to tie it up but Shea Illi’s attempt from outside the arc was astray. Coach Jamie Pearlman says, while they will enjoy the win, there is more hard work to come. “We are by no means done, we started the season with one goal in mind and that’s what we are going for.” He says that goal is to win an NBL championship. “The guys are really focused, they toil really hard and that’s all to play finals basketball.” Following the game, point guard Kyle Adnam was presented with the people’s choice MVP award and was quick to acknowledge his teammates. “It’s a credit to these guys, they make me look good.” With the Giants win, Nelson, the Saints, and the Southland Sharks could all still finish the season top of the table.

We’re consulting on changes to the Public Water Supply Bylaw, which outlines how we plan to manage and protect Tasman District’s reticulated water supply. One of the main proposed changes in the updated bylaw has the potential to affect everyone on a public water supply – a new framework for imposing water restrictions during times or drought or emergency water shortage. Find out more Information about the revised bylaw and how to have your say is available on our website. Head to www.tasman.govt. nz/feedback. You can also pop in to any Council service centre for copies of the consultation document.

Community Grants open

Coastal hazards and sea level rise

Applications for our Community Grants are open now and close on 31 July 2018. Funding is available for Tasman-based projects that meet a community need and have community support. Priority is given to projects that can show financial support from other sources as well. Online applications: This year we’ve shortened the time you’ll need to spend online. Visit tasman.govt.nz/link/grants to download the Community Grants from Rates Application Form. Work on the application at your own pace – and save as you go. Send the completed application back to us using a simple online form.

Hear about the latest science and how we prepare for change. In February we all saw the powerful forces of nature in action. Two large storms came in quick succession. Climate change is now a business as usual factor, we will also have more high intensity storm events more frequently. The Government agrees and has provided guidance for related Council decision-making. Dr Rob Bell (NIWA), Dr Dan Zwartz (Ministry for the Environment) and Sylvia Allan (Allan Planning and Research Ltd) will present on the key information from the Ministry for the Environment’s updated Coastal Hazards and Climate Change guidance document: There are two public events next month, sponsored by the New Zealand Coastal Society and supported by the Nelson and Tasman councils.

Hope Tennis Club recently approached us about expanding its clubrooms. The club is intending to fundraise the costs of the building expansion, but needs approval to extend its lease. However, as the project will increase the amount of land occupied by the clubrooms, we’re publicly notifying the request for a new lease. Proposed lease term 30 years

• Motueka: 7.00 – 8.30 pm, 7 August, Memorial Hall, 8 Pah St, Motueka

Due to the fact the lease will encompass an upgraded building, and upgraded courts, at considerable cost to the club, the lease will be issued for 10 years, with two further rights of renewal of 10 years each (a total of 30 years). The lease will be granted under Sections 54(1)(b), and 54(1)(c) of the Reserves Act 1977. The proposed new lease will also include the expanded tennis court layout, and cover all ten tennis courts. • Current building floor area: 81 sq m.
