Local farmers face lockdown challenge Jenny Nicholson and Jo Kent The Government’s announcement that all New Zealand would go into Level 4 lockdown has had an immediate impact on some local farmers. Wakefield farmer Ian Parkes sent

lambs to the works on Tuesday, and they were returned Wednesday due to freezing works working at half capacity. “The problem is that lambs that have been on vineyards need to come off so the vineyards can get ready for spring,” he said. “So,

there is nowhere for them to go.” He says it’s not just a local issue. He had sent lambs to Oamaru, and they were also returned. Ian says bobby calves have preference at the meatworks, but they will probably peak this week. He thinks those with lambs on vine-

yards may then have priority. Otherwise, day to day work on his farm is life as normal. Businesses involved in food and beverage production are allowed to keep operating during alertlevel 4. That includes fishers, farmers, orchardists, meat and 21 7-20 201

from page 1 “Each farm is an individual unit,” says Martin. “But during lambing and calving the focus tends to be internal anyway.” Martin says this lockdown is easier than last years as systems and protocols are in place and a clear set of rules have been developed. “If third parties such as vets come onto farms, there needs to be separation.” His major concern is if Covid-19 gets onto a farm. “That is very scary. We are trying to figure that out,” says Martin. “Animal

welfare is a priority. Cows need to be milked and we would be relying on the staff on the farms to carry on.” Federated Farmers national president Andrew Hoggard says with the Delta variant farmers need to follow the rules. He agrees that the hardest part will be social distancing in some situations. “If you’re dealing with a difficult carving and the vet needs to come, that’s where things get challenging.” He also agreed that staying home in August wasn’t usually an issue for most dairy farmers. It’s a time they hardly ever leave the farm.

Butchers’ block: Butchers are urging the Government to allow them to reopen under strict covid protocol and serve their communities. Under Alert Level 4, independent butchers are only allowed to operate contactless deliveries. Retail Meat New Zealand Kit Arkwright, from the membership body for Kiwi butchers, is appealing for the Government to change their stance. “Our members acknowledge that the whole country is feeling the impacts of this latest lockdown but know they can do their part to keep Kiwis fed at a time of national crisis.” Ballancing act: Ballance Agri-Nutrients (Ballance) has announced a nationwide programme of sponsorships intended to foster and celebrate scientific and innovative thinking among New Zealand primary and secondary school stu-

dents. The initiative will see Ballance partner with several regional science and technology fairs around the country to encourage greater interest in and understanding of agriculture in New Zealand Ballance’s SFF Futures Programme Manager, Suzanne Young, says the organisation is immensely proud to be supporting young Kiwis as they step up to tackle the environmental challenges facing New Zealand’s agricultural sector. mental health help: Farmers struggling with ongoing Alert Level 4 Lockdown are being urged to reach out for help. Rural Women New Zealand are urging farmers to find ways to remain active and look for some positives to focus but to reach out for help if needed. Impact on agricultural industry Jo Kent

The agricultural sector will prove its resilience yet again in these uncertain times, predicts Westpac senior agri economist Nathan Penny. “But that’s not to say there won’t be any impact.” He says that some goods may become hard to get as supply chains are already very tight and are expected to get even tighter. “As some delivery truck drivers may be forced to stay at home, it’s likely to translate into some empty shelves at farm supply stores and possibly higher prices for some goods.” More positively, he says the New Zealand dollar has weakened following the lockdown announcement. “It’s down around 2c to 68c against the US dollar and that, in turn, will boost farm gate prices.” He says this lockdown is different to last year’s because the lockdown is only for New Zealand and not global. “Many of our key export markets are heading in the opposite direction and opening up their economies as vaccination rates improve.” He says that is likely to see export prices this time around not impacted by or from lower global demand.

Opportunity in damaged fruit Sam mcdonald, Sophie calder, nicole Byrman with Jared peterson who is tasting the new jam they have created. Photo: Jenny Nicholson. Jenny Nicholson Four Waimea College students have taken hail-damaged fruit and turned it into delicious jam. After winning a section of the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) earlier this year, the students put their $100 prize money toward their new venture. Sam McDonald and Sophie Calder, 18 and Jared Peterson and Nicole Byrman 17 spent a long

day at ‘The Food Factory’, making over 100 jars of jam. They are now hoping to sell them at the YES stall at the Nelson Market. “We’ve done the hard part,” says Nicole. “The next step is marketing and selling. Originally, they focused on excess apples and dehydrated fruit chips. But soon they realised that jam would be a more viable option. They wanted something original

representing New Zealand so switched to using kiwifruit. Nicole and Jared have thought about taking the jams to a wider market, possibly even overseas. They have already applied for and received a food exemption allowing them to produce and sell the jam. “We would need to make the process a lot quicker,” says Sophie. “These 104 jars took 9 hours.” They are thankful to Pic’s for

the free use of The Food Factory and to Thomas Brothers for donating 200kg of fruit that was either hail damaged or wasn’t the right shape. They still have a lot of kiwifruit to process. Sam says the jam is really sweet and delicious. He has tried it on toast, pikelets, and scones and as a glaze on ham. It is Jared’s recipe and says it’s the result of internet research and a lot of testing.
