Summer movies come to Richmond Staff Reporter If you’re looking for a way to get out of the house on a summer evening, Nelson’s summer movies al fresco are for you. The movies are put on every year across Nelson and Tasman, and this year there are some relatively unknown jewels coming to Washbourn Gardens in Richmond. Summer movies al fresco have been presented by the Nelson City Council, with assistance from the Tasman District Council, since 1997. There will be some more unknown films this year, including a salute to the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 flight.
Coinciding with Nelson Provincial Museum’s ‘Our Moon’ exhibition, it will be screened in Trafalgar St. The 1902 16-minute Trip To The Moon and the 1964 First Men In The Moon are both acknowledged for ground-breaking special effects of their time. Some of the 18 region-wide screenings will be shown with English subtitles turned on for the deaf, hard of hearing or English as a second language viewers. Most parks are flat, grassy surfaces and have accessible toilets, except Fairfield Park. While many showing are in Fairfield and Isel Park, there will be some great movies playing in Washbourn Gardens in Rich-
mond. Movies screened in Richmond, include: ‘A Christmas Carol,’ ‘Pollyanna,’ and ‘Anne of the Indies.’ Gather a group, a picnic, bring a chair and head down from 7:30 pm to play giant board games, enjoy the park and watch the region’s glorious summer sunsets before a great movie.

Drax Project headline Riwaka Kiwi pop sensation Drax Project kick off their five-concert summer tour in Riwaka on 28 December. The four-piece rose to fame after busking on the street. They have been based in LA since releasing their first full album in September, which features the hits ‘Woke up Late’, ‘Toto’ and the Six60 collaboration ‘Catching Feelings’. Reporter Kate Russell talks to bass player Sam about their first show in the region. Are you looking forward to your Riwaka show? “We’re excited that Riwaka is the first show on the tour. We’ve never played in the Nelson or Tasman area. Personally, I love it there. I’ve been to Nelson and Abel Tasman a couple of times and it’s such a beautiful place, especially in summer. I’m excited to get back there and play a show. It’s unfortunate as we fly into Nelson on the morning of the show and then fly out the morning after, but I’m hoping to come back down to Abel Tasman and just hang out a little bit. Overall, we’re just excited to come back to New Zealand and play some shows.” What has your experience in LA been like? “LA is cool. It’s difficult being away from friends and family, but it’s so cool being here

For us, everything that we do is a learning process, and we’re starting to get a handle on it. It will be exciting going home as we’ll keep making little bits and pieces of music, so it will be interesting to see how our experience here has affected us and what we’ve learnt from it. And hopefully, we’re better at it now.” Who are your influences? “We listen to so much different music. I listen to straight pop stuff like Sam Smith - standard top 40 stuff. But then I also listen to a lot of dance music, stuff like Jon Hopkins. I also like metal and rock music. That’s kind of like a past life thing when I was younger. We all have different things that we listen to and I think that probably influences our sound. We

just try to make music that we like ourselves and sometimes it can be quite a unique mixture of different things.” Will you be playing any new music at the show? “That’s the plan. We love to test our new music and see how people react to it – that’s something that we’ve always done. With our song ‘Toto’, we weren’t sure about one section of it, lyrically. Then we got a message to our Facebook page from somebody who was at one of our shows saying ‘is this song available, I really love these lyrics’ - which were the ones we weren’t sure about, so we thought ‘okay cool, I guess that’s going to stay the same’. It’s good seeing what sections work and the different vibes from the audiences. It’s a big thing because our live show is what we call our ‘feature’ – that’s our thing, playing live.”

Age concern brings Christmas Cheer
Age Concern Nelson Tasman has had a busy month. That’s because throughout December they’ve been co-ordinating their annual Christmas campaign. And this year they’ve had some help to do it. The Christmas Campaign has been running since 2014 and was designed as a way to give back to members of our aging
community that might need some support during the Holiday season. “Its incredible. It grows every year,” says Caroline Budge, Manager of Age Concern Nelson Tasman. Caroline says that Age Concern ask the community for donations of non-perishable foods, treats, toiletries, etc so
that they can make up care packages for older people who live by themselves and may not have family around them at Christmas time. “It’s a nice way to just give people a present at Christmas, where it can be quite a hard time for some people.” “It’s a lovely campaign – it just seems to grow and grow.
There’s a need for it.” This year the students at Richmond School lent a helping hand to organise the donated goods into boxes that had been covered in Christmas wrapping ready to be donated to an older person. Packages were delivered just before Christmas to those in need.

Local shopper wins $5000 Matt McCrorie A local woman has walked away $5000 better off, thanks to the annual Shop ‘n’ Win competition. Sharon Illingworth, a Richmond resident, couldn’t believe her luck when she got a call from the Waimea Weekly to let her know that she was this year’s lucky winner. “I was completely in shock,” says Sharon, who has been entering the competition every year since it began. “When I got the call, I thought it was a joke. I just couldn’t believe
it,” says Sharon. “I only put in one entry, but I’ve never really won anything at all before.” The competition runs in retail stores around Richmond in the lead up to Christmas. Sharon’s winning entry was filled out at Farmers in the Richmond Mall. Farmers Store Manager Dion de Clercq says that he’s extremely pleased that one of their customers won this year. “It’s great. And Christmastime is the best time to do it. Everybody needs a bit of extra cash.”

Serengeti Cinematographer developed in Richmond Staff Reporter A frontline cinematographer for one of New Zealand’s top rating current television series (Serengeti) will be catching his breath for the Christmas break back home in Richmond. Former Garin College student Mat Goodman has had a whirlwind, globetrotting career in filming wildlife since graduating Canterbury Polytechnic Institute of Technology in 2013 with a Degree in Environmental Science and Outdoor Education and Diploma in Photography. But it was a shaky start to his tertiary studies when ‘Day One’ saw Christchurch literally crumbling around Mat’s central city classroom. Once qualified, a chance connection whilst on holiday in Germany to a wildlife film camera operator was a boosted step in the direction Mat felt inspired to follow. His instinctive flair, passion and hunger to advance in this field lead to further work including a six-week stint in New Caledonia habituating the native crow in what would become an intellectual showdown against our own clever Kea. The resultant Netflix-accessed ‘Beaks and Brains’ is a most fascinating revelation of avian intelligence and innovation. Incidentally, it was Mat’s tenacious determination, the patience
Mat Goodman loads rock cameras for placement at warthog burrows in the Serengeti. Photo: Supplied. of Job and his filming skills which finally produced the critical footage from Fiordland to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Kea are not only tool users but indeed toolmakers. The peer-reviewed, scientifically-credited paper on this finding has since been published in the internationally-acclaimed ‘Nature’ magazine. In the meantime, Mat’s assortment of lenses have taken him to far-flung locations including Alaska (sea otters and grizzly bears), Norway (polar bears),
Costa Rica (Olive Ridley turtles), Mexico (Mobula rays and pelicans), Indonesia (Komodo dragons) and Ethiopia (native wolf). Much of his work so far has been for the BBC/Discovery joint venture-funded John Downer Productions and includes working with the revolutionary, mechanical remote-controlled ‘spy animals’ which with varying degrees of success infiltrate and get up close and personal to the film target species. The ‘Spy in the Wild’ produc-
tion earned Mat a second Emmy nomination for cinematography to go with that for ‘Wild New Zealand’. Mat’s advanced skills as a drone operator and qualifications as a Scuba diver and paraglider pilot have also proved valuable in his work. Being a pet animal owner and lover through childhood has given Mat a greater understanding of the wildlife he needs to be able to ‘read’ when filming. “Domestic dogs and cats are
‘gateway’ animals and much of their behaviour is consistent with, say, the wild dogs and feline species of Africa. Tanzanians, for example, don’t have a traditional culture of caring for pets as we do and my experience has proved advantageous in interpreting body language in places such as the Serengeti.” Mat returns to Africa in mid-January for further filming but in the meantime, Serengeti can be seen on TV One on Tuesdays at 7.30 pm or on TV On Demand.
Fresh Asian Cuisine
The friendly staff at Chai Yo, from left, Wanlapa, Amiee, Sunita, Sangha, Saat, Rose, are dedicated to creating a great atmosphere to enjoy the range of Asian cuisine.
Chai Yo celebrates 10 years – says ‘thanks!’ The owners of the popular Thai restaurant Chai Yo are celebrating 10 years in business and want to say a big ‘THANKYOU’ to their loyal customers. “We have really appreciated the support of locals who come here on a regular basis,” says Bu-nga Krartaitong who owns Chai Yo with her husband Nuvattut Rodsienglum. “Our customers enjoy the relaxed, friendly atmosphere and our great selection of dishes such as ‘Thai Spicy Fried Rice, ‘Drunken Noodles’ and ‘Angry Duck,’
with favourites like ‘Pad Thai’ and our very own signature dish – ‘Crunchy Chicken with Creamy Red Coconut Sauce.’” The couple’s partnership has been a recipe for success. “My husband is experienced in cooking Asian-fusion cuisine and I have a strong business background. Nuttavut’s mother was a fantastic cook and she is an inspiration for everything we do. Our recipes use the knowledge we have from cooking with our families in Thailand and taking the best local ingredients and
adapting to the local palate.” Bu-nga says it’s a good time for them to expand and introduce a Chinese-oriented menu as well. “We are planning to have dishes such as Orange Chicken and Orange Beef, Duck with Palo Sauce and Hokkein Noodles.” Chai Yo is perfect for groups, corporate functions and endof-year work dinners and is also ideal for couples, families or friends looking for somewhere to dine over the holidays. Classic Motorcycle show a highlight for region Matt McCrorie One of the largest Classic Motorcycle clubs in the country will be hosting it’s annual showcase over the 4th and 5th of January, at the Stoke Memorial Hall. Every year the Nelson Classic and Vintage Motorcycle club displays a large collection of motorcyles owned by current and former members of the club. The bikes must be over 25 years old, and can be from any country or manufacturer. Lifelong club member Murray Sch-
wass says the meeting is a good way to get the whole club together, as well as showing off their bikes to anyone from the public who might be interested. As well as the public getting to see and learn more about classic bikes, a swap meet will also be taking place on the Sunday. Anyone who wishes to sell motorcycle related material from bikes, clothing, books, or parts is welcome. “It’s a great way for those interested to meet other people too,” Murray says. “All bikes in whatever condition
-either full restores or barn finds are displayed by members of the club, and cover a wide area of Nelson bays. You will see all makes and models, 2 strokes, singles, v twin, twins and more.” Doors open at 9am on both days, and tickets are $5 for adults, while children are free. “Come on in and enjoy some of Nelsons motorcycling history.” The Nelson Classic and Vintage Motorcycle Club is holding its annual show at the Stoke Memorial Hall on January 4 and 5.

Police are warning residents after a recent scam. For four weeks from November 20 Waimea Weekly ran an ad which is now believed to be part of a nationwide scam. The ad read ‘Looking for a good woman to marry.’ An email address was included. This ad was run in newspapers throughout the country. Police determined that a stolen card was used to pay for the adverts, and that fraudulent card details were obtained by scamming those who responded to the adverts. Police advise that if you have had any contact with the advertiser, you should cease contact immediately.

Get in the water – The best swimming spots in the region With summer upon us, Matt McCrorie takes a look around the region to uncover some of the best swimming spots.
What better way to celebrate the summer months in our region than by getting in the water? Our stunning climate and location mean that the Tasman region is home to several great swimming spots. With beautiful beaches and pristine rivers, residents and visitors of the region are spoilt for choice. Do you go to the beach, the river, or spend the day at the pool? Some great local swimming spots include the Aniseed and Lee Valleys, as well as the Waimea River,
which all have plenty of space for barbeques and cricket. Busch Reserve, Twin Bridges and White Gates are all great swimming spots along the Roding river, in Aniseed Valley, with White Gates reserve being a favourite among locals. Twin Bridges is a 20-minute drive from Richmond. The Twin Bridges and Busch Reserves are just at the foot of the hill with several swimming holes along the length of the reserves. These two swimming spots are
two of the region’s most popular, averaging between 500 – 600 visitors a day during peak periods. The Lee reserve is another great place to swim in the summer, only 10 minutes’ drive east of Brightwater. During peak periods from Christmas-February the reserve has between 400 and 500 visitors a day. Moturoa / Rabbit Island is one of the most popular beaches in the region. The 13 kilometre stretch of beach is a popular spot all year
for locals, 15 minutes from Richmond. Covered in pine plantations owned by the Tasman District Council, Rabbit Island is set up as a public reserve, with barbeques provided, Rabbit Island is the largest picnic area in the district. Kaiteriteri is one of the most popular holiday spots in the top of the south. With golden sand and sparkling blue water, it’s easy to see why both holidaymakers and locals alike make the trip out to one of
the region’s favourite spots. And of course, Lake Rotoiti can’t be forgotten. It’s a popular spot for swimmers and boaties and has the accessible-by-boat only Manupiria Hot Springs on its shores. The spot is popular for walkers too, with several short walks from the shore. Get out there and enjoy the warmer months, and all the great beaches and rivers that our region has to offer. Keep an eye on the kids and be safe!

Tasman District Council Christmas card competition Susan Johnson
The Tasman District Council (TDC) held an online Christmas card competition for children recently and were delighted with the response. It was the first time the council had held an online competition and they weren’t sure what kind of response they would get. The winning design would be turned into an e-card for the Councillors and staff to send out with their seasons’ greeting. They received around 150 entries and according to Beth Catley, TDC Communications Officer, they were very pleased with the number of children that sent in a card and the
judging panel were very impressed with all the great pictures. Xanthe McGill, aged 5, was one of the winners and won a gift pack of crayons and drawing materials. She took winning in her stride. When asked how it felt to win, she replied “good”. Her mum Sophia on the other hand is a very proud parent. “When I realised the reindeer actually looked recognizable, I knew we were in for a fighting chance and I sent the drawing in,” says Sophie. The TDC displayed as many pictures as they could in the Richmond Council office in the lead up to Christmas and you can still see them on the TDC website.

Santa’s other helpers working Christmas Day Susan Johnson Not everyone can have Christmas Day off and to keep our essential services going, a group of dedicated people are cheerfully working because for them ‘it’s business as usual.’ Alexandria Hospital staff working Christmas Day: Registered Nurse (RN) Liz Willis working 7am to 4pm: “Normally our family would have brunch of pancakes and berries but instead we’ll get together for a BBQ after I finish work. As I’ve worked every day up to Christmas as well, I’ve had to be super organised this year but the kids are older now so it’s not such a big deal. One of my daughters is a nurse as well. But I’ll still get pancakes because we’re making them at work for the staff and exchanging gifts.” RN Samara Arnold working Christmas night starting at 10pm: “Although I will have the day with family the thought that I have to go to work that night is always at the back of your mind and of course I have to make sure I’m fit to do a night shift, so no drinking and I have to get some sleep in before work.”
Chief Fire Officer Craig Piner hopes the public will give From left: Katherine Oughton, Paul Omondi, Liz Willis, Suzi Paenga, Samara the emergency services a quiet day. Photo: Susan Johnson. Arnold. Photo: Susan Johnson. RN Suzie Paenga is working a day shift on Christmas Day “I asked to work Christmas Day because my partner is working so I thought I might as well too. The extra money is good and when we finish, we can relax and have a hangi.” Mental Health Assistant Paul Omondi is working Christmas Eve 11pm to 7am: “When I get home the kids will open their presents and we’ll have a Christmas lunch. Then my wife has to go to work and I’ll try and have some rest but our children
are both very young so that might not happen!”
egiver at Oakwoods Retirement Village in Richmond: “I offered to work the 8am to 1:15 shift on Christmas Day as it will only be my husband and me at home as our children and grandchildren are not able to be with us this year. It gives me a lot of pleasure to spend the time with the residents of Oakwoods.”
Katherine Oughton works in Housekeeping and will start at 6:302am on Christmas Day: “I’ll hopefully finish work about 1:30 and we’ll have a BBQ which is what we normally do. Our girls are older now and they do a lot of the preparation that I used to do which is a great help. mas Day. Of course, you get used to it but it’s always at the back of your mind that the pager can go off at any moment. That means no alcohol of course. It’s hard on volunteers with young families, especially if the kids are too young to understand. If I was off over the festive period, I’d go to the West Coast to visit with family then back to Nelson to spend time with family and friends. The Richmond Fire Brigade would like the Tasman public to help us have a peaceful Christmas by being careful with BBQ’s and don’t drink and drive.”

Shoppers have plenty of options on Richmond’s Queen Street this summer. Photo: Susan Johnson.
Shopping in Richmond Susan Johnson If you need a break from the beaches, then come to Richmond for all your shopping needs. Richmond Mall has over 70 specialty shops and two supermarkets in airconditioned comfort with a food hall and cafes when you need a sit-down. It offers the largest shopping experience under one roof at the top of the South Island with international chain
stores to locally owned businesses and top fashion brands. There’s something for the kids, plenty of kitsch and practical homewares. Regular entertainment and attractions are held at the Mall so keep an eye out for some family fun over the summer. Mall Centre Manager Belinda DeClercq says that foot traffic is up 8% on last year and the free gift wrapping is very popular.
Outside the Mall, Sundial Square is surrounded by shops offering different food and drink options so you can relax on the grass in the sun in between shopping sprees or pop into one of the cafes for lunch. On busy Queen Street, you will find clothing and shoe boutiques, sports and convenience stores which together with the Mall make Richmond the second biggest shopping destination after Nelson city.

The Great Backyard Cricket Tournament returns to Mapua this weekend. Photo: Supplied.
Backyard battlers to clash in Mapua Jonty Dine With the Blackcaps currently undertaking the toughest task in cricket, playing tests in Australia, local fans will have the chance to make history of their own. The eighth annual Great Backyard Cricket Tournament gets underway on Friday at The Playhouse. “World famous in Mapua,” the annual event sees everyone from 8 to 80-years-old among the action. Playhouse owner Nic Roland says the event
is continuing to grow in popularity. “We normally get between six to 10 teams on the day plus spectators. Around 60 people hang out in the backyard cricket area.” Nic says there will be a bunch of small prizes up for grabs, from hats to cricket sets, however, most people come along for the fun rather than the prizes. “It’s a fun day for all ages.” He says the last two years have been won by a family team from Christchurch who stay at the Mapua holi-
day park. “This year we decided to hold the event on the 27th rather than the traditional 26th as we didn’t want to clash with the Black Caps.” Nic says there will be lots of local rules, which will all be spelled out on the day. “No experience, needed just a desire for a great day out on the Playhouse’s famous custom-built backyard cricket pitch.” The Great Backyard Cricket Tournament, Friday 27 December 12.20pm – 3.00pm. First game from 1pm.

Kelly takes victory at Sea Swim Peter Gibbs Luke Kelly made it three from five as he stretched out to a clear victory over a relatively short swim of 700m in the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series on Thursday. After two cancellations already this summer and with winds predicted, swimmers were delighted to have good conditions and were ready for a short race in order to leave time for a Christmas barbecue. With many of the top teen swimmers away representing New Zealand in the NSW open water championships, the field was wide open. Terry Bone was ready to take a chance. In the tide-assisted opening leg to the south, 47-yearold Terry challenged last year’s champion Luke Kelly, 20, in a sprint to the first mark out in the harbour. Luke just held him off, opening up a small gap on the second leg in towards Rocks Rd, with Oxford Bayley hanging on in second. In the race back north to the yacht club ramp, Luke opened up a 20-second gap over Oxford, with Terry another 20 seconds behind in third. Hamish Neill, 56, wasn’t far behind, taking fourth place ahead of Emily Bryant, Austen Dean, Joe Thornton and 57-yearold Andrew Martin. Nelson is blessed with
some of the top age group swimmers in the country, with training partners Terry, Hamish and Andrew almost unbeatable nationally. Another of that training group, Christina Harris, 56, continued to dominate her age group, finishing fourth in the women’s field behind Emily Bryant, 15, Ava Simpson, 16, and 30-year-old Flossie Van Dyke of Chia Sisters fame. Back in 14th place in a field of 90, Flossie’s father Ben Van Dyke, 69, is another top national age group swimmer who continues to defy the ravages of time, as does Stuart Hebberd, 71, who finished 29th and Derek Eaton, 78, who finished in 34th position. One of Nelson’s top school triathletes from the early 1990s, Leighton Matheson, 44, made a quiet surprise appearance, finishing a creditable 22nd in the field. In the short race over about 400m, 13-year-old Brooke Swan took her fifth consecutive win, ahead of Emily Chadderton, 12, Olivia Huata-Findlay, 12, and Mia Langley, 16. Swimming continues without pause on Thursday nights throughout the holiday season, with visiting swimmers of all ages welcome. Full information and weekly results at nelson seaswims.co.nz.

Nelson Matters
My 2019 began with the launch of Matthew’s Petition in Appleby last New Year seeking the introduction of random roadside drug testing to make our roads safer. It could not have ended better with the Government announcing on the last day of Parliament their agreement to introduce this measure after dismissing it all year. 23 year old Matthew Dow was killed in a horrible New Year’s Eve crash by Golden Bay woman Alicia Fulcher who was high on meth and cannabis, driving like a maniac and passing recklessly. Nelson’s emergency services described the Appleby crash as the worst they had ever seen.
The road toll from drug impaired drivers has escalated from 14 in 2014, 27 in 2015, 54 in 2016 and Matthew Dow was the 79th in 2017. There was another 95 in 2018. These numbers now exceed drunk driving. However 16,000 people were prosecuted for drunk driving as compared to only 200 for drugged driving. The current drug impairment test is unworkable and impractical. Drug users know they face little chance of being prosecuted. I am in awe of Mathew’s mum, Karen Dow, who has led the campaign with me on random roadside drug testing this year. I thank the over 6,000 Nelsonians
who signed our petition. We were joined by the Waverley community in June after their horrific seven person fatality crash caused by a drugged driver. Police and the Transport Ministry recommended new laws enabling saliva testing for drugs to Road Safety Minister Genter over two years ago. The Green Party Minister rejected the advice saying saliva testing is too intrusive and a breach of the Bill of Rights. She questioned the risks posed by recreational drug use incorrectly claiming prescription drugs were a greater risk. She also questioned the accuracy of testing. I reject these arguments and worry
544 Waimea Road, Nelson
the Green Party has a dangerous blind spot on the problems caused by recreational drug use. Australia, Canada and the UK have all successfully introduced random roadside drug testing. We heard the same opposition when National introduced random roadside alcohol testing in 1993. It was successful in halving drunk driving fatalities. I tried three times this year to introduce a Bill to introduce random drug testing. Speaker Trevor Mallard took the extreme step of blocking me in May and when I objected, he named me. This is the most serious punishment an MP can receive and has not been
used in a decade. I again sought leave for a Bill to be introduced on Parliament’s last sitting day on December 18. Ironically, the Government again opposed it but then announced that evening it would do so next year. Politics is about winning arguments for the better. This measure will save dozens of lives and is even more important with the Government’s push for legalising recreational cannabis. I hope and pray there are not too many fatalities before the Government scheme starts in February 2021. My job in 2020 will be ensuring the new law is robust and we get the testing in place ASAP. Advt.
