You can now have your say about the speed limits on 67 roads across the Tasman District. The proposal presented by the Tasman District

Council (TDC) aims to reduce road deaths and serious injuries and ensure consistency across the roading network. The consultation is open at the TDC website and the proposed changes can be presented until 1 November. “Research shows an undeniable

relationship between speed and road safety – there is no other risk factor that has a more powerful impact on accidents or injuries than speed,” says Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne. He said road safety had deteriorated both nationally and in Tasman

over the past three years. “We want to reverse that trend and make sure our residents and visitors can go about their daily lives in Tasman District safely, returning home to their loved ones once they have finished their journeys. That’s what reducing speed lim-

its is about,” says Richard. The proposed roads were selected following a review that included looking at roads requested by the community, as well as an assessment of the highest-risk roads.

History learning with lots of fun is what children and adults will be able to enjoy on Saturday and Sunday, 5 and 6 October, at the Higgins Heritage Park, at Pigeon Valley. The ‘Transport Show’ will be from 10am to 4pm and the visitors will check out all sorts of vintage, classic, military and modern transport. “We will be taking those that want to go for a ride,” says Tony Steenhart, owner of a 1942 Willys G military jeep that will be available at the show. “We liked the wind in our eyes,” says 10-year old Sabian Oulsnam, who enjoyed a demonstration ride on the military jeep with his 6-year old brother Lucian Oulsnam. The 1942 Willys G military jeep and other old vehicles will be available for kids’ rides and demonstrations. The visitors of the ‘Transport Show’ will also be able to enjoy some Irish music and dancing, food, drinks, raffles, silent auction and craft stalls. The entrance fee for adults is $5, for children it is $2 and for the whole family (two adults, two children) is $10.

Don’t mind really, not fussed either way.

I like it. It’s great for kids, they get to play longer outside, gardeners get more time after work.

I like it, more light in the evenings means I can do more stuff.

I love it and it has to make farmers’ lives easier.

Have your say: speed fRom PAGE 1 One of the roads listed in the speed reducing proposal is Lower Queen Street in Richmond. The reduction would be from the existing 50km/h limit to 60m northwest of Headingly Lane. The speed would drop from 60km/h to 50km/h. The reason for the proposal is the ‘existing 50km/h adjusted to match urban development’. Mel Harnetty, who works at Helping Families Nelson as a volunteer agrees with the change, particularly at one of the roads where it may happen, agrees with it. “Roads and driveways are coming off this area and I think it is a good

move, because the traffic is going to be busier and busier over here. Now there is summer coming, visitors, people going to the beach. It’s a main road. Even without the population growing, it grows anyway in summertime,” says Mel. Ellis Street in Brightwater is another road which could have the speed reduced. It would be from from Lightband Road to Lord Rutherford Road. The speed would be reduced from 50km/h to 40km/h and the reasons are “safer and consistent speeds for busy school roads and town centre roads.” It will be supported by a Brightwater gateway and trafficcalming features to be

constructed as part of the Brightwater town centre upgrade project during 2019/20. “We think it’s great because it is going to make it a lot safer for children getting to and from school for us. We were involved with the TDC and their development plan for Ellis Street as well, and we are all for it,” says Glenda Earle, deputy principal at Brightwater School. For Sara Chapman, who works at The Local Fish n’ Chips, in Brightwater, thinks it is a good idea. “I reckon that reducing the speed is great. There are a lot of kids out there playing and walking to the playgrounds and a lot of kids walk home by themselves as well,” she says.

Nelson Hunting and Fishing has announced it will participate in the country’s gun buyback scheme to give the community an option other than the police to hand in their firearms. People can hand in listed ‘prohibited firearms and parts’ for compensation. “It’s somewhere to come and feel more comfortable,” says Michael Darling, owner of Nelson Hunting and Fishing. Before handing your firearms,

it is necessary to make an appointment. The phone number is 035 481 840. Gun owners can bring a maximum of three firearms and five parts at a time. To register, it is necessary to access the police website and complete the forms. “If they have trouble completing them, they can come in the store and we can help,” says Michael. The police gun buy-back runs out on the 20 December, but Nelson Hunting & Fishing can receive firearms only until 20 November. The store staff

Wendy Pearson

Ph 541 9667

will not be able to give an immediate valuation assessment but can help to complete the paperwork based on your “selfassessed condition”. Police will collect the firearms from the store and contact the owner to confirm condition, details and make payment. “Ensure safety measures are observed before you bring your firearm into the store,” Michael says. In the district, Kelly Country (Brightwater) and Gun City (Motueka) are also registered as gun buy-back outlets.

Local Red Cross store wins national prize Bruno Saia Richmond’s Red Cross store has won the top prize in the company’s annual awards. Tasman is beautiful, our ability to be able to access and enjoy beaches, rivers and mountains within a 30 minute radius is amazing. We are certainly blessed, however we do need to recognise the responsibility we all have, collectively as a community, as a region, as a country and as global citizens to protect and nurture these assetsCentral government is leading a top down approach in terms of the recent National Policy Statements and I congratulate the current council on the adoption of the Climate Action Plan. We owe it to our future generations to care for our place.

In Tasman, Nelson & Marlborough between 2012 and 2019, there were 423 injury crashes involving a motorcyclist or moped rider. Of these, 16 were fatal with 126 leading to serious injury. Loss of control make up 37% of these which is by far the highest contributing factor. Councils in the Top of the South are working with local clubs, riders and other organisations to reduce these figures. Tasman District Council (TDC), Nelson City Coun-

cil and Marlborough District Council will subsidise any rider who attends a motorbike training, scooter training or a refresher course taken by one of the experienced local providers. Riders can register at www.ridetolive.co.nz for a subsidy and then register for a course. Some local feedback from training: ‘The practical aspects were well-chosen and helped us to develop balanced control of the bike at low speeds.’ ‘The following excursion up the Moutere Hill gave us practical experience to choose the

right cornering lines….(the course) helped me appreciate the need to always acquire optimal vision, by adopting the right riding lines. I’m now much more confident about positioning the bike on the road.’ Ride Forever courses are also subsidised by ACC. There are four different levels of Ride Forever courses (scooter, bronze, silver, gold) depending on the motorbike or scooter licence you hold. Once you complete a Ride Forever course you can also get a $100 rebate off your bike registration, so Get Ride Ready!

Dressing well for much less money with pre worn Bruno Saia A large group locals got together last Friday at Club Waimea for a show of elegance and sympathy. The Preloved Fashion Parade presented all the second-hand stores’ potential to keep people comfortable and well dressed in an affordable way. It was also a great opportunity to help a good cause.

At the parade, the Nelson Haven Lioness Club and the Hospice Shops were working together towards total profit for Nelson Tasman Hospice. “We have been working towards the Parade for eight months, as we are a small club we invited Nelson Lionesses to assist. We had the most amazing group of people prepared to be models,” says Margaret Ching, from the Lioness’.

Joanna Davis of team Mitre 10 was their major sponsor with input from Murray Leaning, and they had Hayden Rose design their poster. Three businesses were responsible for selling the tickets for the event: Nelson House of Travel, Lemon-tree Lane Stoke and Richmond Mall.

Chris and Yvonne Bowater donated their printing time. “One night Yvonne was in her office printing posters at 9pm, hadn’t had dinner, it just lets you realise what special people they are,” says Margaret. “It is a very exciting and fun project which we will organise again next year, our clubs heartfelt thank you for the tremendous support we received,” says Margaret.

A great turnout, plenty of community support and sunshine galore made Saturday morning’s Memory Walk at Isel Park one to remember. Hundreds of Nelsonians dressed up in purple and looped the park to show their support for all those living with dementia, along with their families, friends and care partners. Led by members of the Nelson Celtic Pipe Band, the congregation left from St Barnabas Church in Stoke where there were speeches from members of Alzheimer’s Nelson and MP Nick Smith. Alzheimer’s Nelson manager Heather Lackner estimated around 200 people were in attendance. “We walk to raise awareness and remember those who can’t. By raising awareness, it helps to reduce the stigma surrounding dementia,” she says. “It’s really lovely looking around and seeing the variety of ages attending. This is something that affects people of so many different ages.” From children on scooters to seniors with walkers - and even dogs with purple bow ties - there was a real mix of supporters. The Nelson Memory Walk has been running for five years, shifting from Founders Heritage Park to Isel Park two years ago.

Let’s keep celebrating our older folk the next generation of babies. I go regularly to Sit and Be Fit classes which helps me keep supple and the family come to visit and take me out to lunch. “A couple of weeks ago I hurt my back and was advised to use a wheelchair. Well, it felt like an insult! I had to look up at everyone, I had no control as to where I went, so I got out of it and pushed it myself.”

Age Concern is celebrating the older person at Annesbrook Community Church, 40 Saxton Road West, on the 1st of October. It’s an afternoon tea and entertainment to celebrate the older members in our community. It’s free to everyone but please register with Age Concern Ph 544 7624 ext 4 or at community@ ageconcern.org.

In the first weekend of October will be an exhibition that has never been seen in Nelson before. A small collection of artists have been invited to make art only from materials they find or buy from recycled/secondhand shops. The aim is to raise awareness for the environment and funds for Tasman Bay Guardians. The environmental group was founded in 2017 by tour group owners Stew Robertson and Helen

Forsey and is dedicated to marine conservation and education. Organised by artist Susan Allen, the idea grew out of conversations with the events manager of the Honest Lawyer, Aroha Matthews. The space for the exhibition grew from a small back room to the barn at the back of the Lawyer. It will be free of charge. One of the artists in the exhibition is Victoria Moore who bought a couple of curtains from the recycling depot for $2 each. Depict-

ing a Victorian-era woman surrounded by New Zealand flora and fauna, Victoria settled on the image when she heard how the Victorians severely reduced the huia numbers to wear their feathers in their hats. “It was challenging as the material kept absorbing the paint, but it’s a great cause and I’m glad to be a part of it,” she says. The exhibition is on the 5 and 6 October, 10am to 4pm at The Honest Lawyer Country Pub and Hotel, Monaco, Stoke.

Family looking to fulfil Emma’s dream

Bruno Saia Emma Guyer was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour at the age of 6, which was successfully removed and treated with radiation. Unfortunately the tumour returned in the spine when she was 8, but was again successfully treated. She went with her family to Christchurch a few weeks ago for a three-monthly MRI scan - unfortunately doctors say that the tumour in her brain has returned. “Emma is doing whatever she wants to do,” says her mum, Jennifer Squire. “She is still recovering from a bypass, so she’s been quite tired, but she popped in to see her friends at school, which was nice,”

she says. What Emma really wants is to go to the Gold Coast in Australia and the family aims to do it as soon as possible. A fundraiser for Emma’s bucket list trip will be held on 4 October, from 4.30 to 6pm, at the Hydroslide at Nelson Fun Park in Tahunanui. There will be raffles, bbq and a sausage sizzle. “And even a wee garage sale to make as much as they can for the holiday that Emma desires so much to make memories for the family and friends,” says her father Aaron Guyer. “I’m very excited about the trip,” says Emma. “I just want to go there, especially for the theme parks and the beaches,” she says. Anyone keen to help can also access Emma’s Givealittle.com page.

International Day of the Older Person will be celebrated on the 1st of October and one such older person is Jocelyn Griffith who is 97. Born in Lower Hutt, Jocelyn moved to Nelson when she married her husband. They had two children. “I was very fortunate to have been able to travel a lot with my husband. I

can remember a trip to Denmark, we were going by boat from England and the captain announced that it was going to be a rough crossing and if anyone had an anti-seasick pill now was the time to take it. WORLD CUP WARM UP! It was a special night for the Sioux Line Dance Group last Wednesday at Club Waimea, in Richmond. Photo: Bruno Saia.

RUSSIAN STANDARD PLAIN VODKA OR LARIOS MEDITERRANEAN PREMIUM GIN

Celebrating best foot forward for over 25 years Bruno Saia The Sioux Line Dance group gets together every Wednesday at Club Waimea in Richmond to have fun and, of course, to dance a lot. But last Wednesday it was more than that. They have been raising money since March to provide a brand-new electric pressure guard air mattress to Nelson Tasman Hospice. “Tonight we are bringing our two classes from Mapua and Richmond together, to have a social night and do a fundrais-

er. We have about $350 to go to reach our target of $2500”, says Sue Wilson, who has been the group’s dance teacher for the last twenty-five years. “We aim to raise funds for items that are needed for either the hospice or for patients who are out in the community, enabling them to remain at home with some comfort,” she says. And the Sioux Line Dance Group is not just about raising money for the community. “It is about friendship, camaraderie, looking after each

other, which is what we do,” says Sue. According to Sue, line dancing is also about fun and fitness, at a level that best suits each dancer. “Low or High Impact assisting with memory, balance and co-ordination are important attributes. Line dancing does not require a partner so enables those alone to come share their friendship with us,” she says. The classes are every Wednesday and everyone is welcome. They start 6pm and go through to 8:30pm, at Club Waimea.

Larios Gin: Produced using natural ingredients such as juniper berries, coriander and orange peel, Larios Gin undergoes double distillation in traditional alembics. It is characterised by clarity, freshness of aroma and delicate citrus flavour. Clean on the palate with a lingering finish. More dry and smooth than traditional London Dry gins.

Just a thought... Rev. Martin Sungchel Oh Nelson Tasman Methodist Parish There are many different nicknames given to the Church. Some have got a positive meaning, whereas the others are not so positive. If you are a Churchgoer, how would feel if someone said to you “Church is like an echo chamber”. As far as I know, for someone to describe the Church that way means that person has had negative experiences of Church or is not aware about the variety of Christian views and traditions. Furthermore, in this country, people have the freedom to express their own views and beliefs as long as they respect others. That is why a person can say ‘Church is like an echo chamber’.

Here is a question: if we as Christians are not willing to listen to the second opinions of our beliefs and views on various issues, how can we argue against remarks like the one above? Meanwhile, I cannot deny that I am in an ‘echo chamber’ every Sunday because as a preacher, I have to proclaim the same words again and again. That is God’s love for us all. It does not matter where you are at the moment, it does not matter where you came from, and it does not matter what religious tradition you belong to. It does not matter what is your gender, gay, lesbian, transgender, race or status. His love is for us all. God’s love is too big

and vast to describe with it our human brain. His love is indescribable and we listen to his amazing stories every Sunday. However, I admit there are moments we cannot understand God’s love. His love is always around us and with us but we sometimes fail to see it. We also doubt him and sometimes question our beliefs. This is all part of our faith journey. I believe there is always room for questioning and doubt even though we as Christians are in an ‘echo chamber’. I conclude this with the saying “I’m happier to live with questions I cannot answer, than to live with questions I cannot ask.”

I am seeking your support to represent the Richmond Ward on the Tasman District Council. It has been a privilege to be your representative on the Council for the last three years and we have achieved a number of projects for Richmond. The Queen Street upgrade, a Saxton velodrome at Saxton Field and improved stormwater management are examples. It is always a balance on Council to provide the infrastructure required for our residents and to keep rates increases to a minimum. I am very aware of the cost of rates and the impact this has on families and our residents in particular those with fixed incomes. I have a good understanding of central and local government processes and one of the key issues in our immediate future is to lobby central government to address our growing traffic congestion problems on Salisbury Road roundabout and Gladstone Road/Lower Queen Street lights. It would be an honour to represent your interests on council again. People have asked me who I support for Mayor, I am supporting Tim King as he is the only credible candidate. Kit Maling for Council. I am standing again because I have the time and the dedication to help provide a sustainable future for Tasman. As we confront climate change, we need to put measures in place to protect our environment and reduce our carbon footprint. We owe this to future generations. Being an incumbent councillor gives me a depth of understanding of what is required to make Tasman an enjoyable place to live and work. Past community positions include Network Tasman Trust, Tasman Environmental Trust, and other local and national bodies. I currently chair Waimea Village Ltd. My time in business included managing Tuffnell Plumbing, establishing a hire company, and as a project manager for a national body. I offer a wealth of know-how, local body and commercial experience, and a passion for our area to help develop affordable, sustainable growth. A vote for Trevor is a vote for a council where practicality, experience and common sense will prevail.

Dana Wensley lives, works, volunteers, and raises her family in Richmond. She sees council as an extension of the community it serves. She has pushed over the last three years to bridge the gap between community and council. Dana works hard for Richmond. She is a fierce and effective advocate, with a background in commercial law before moving into health law. Dana has spearheaded the new age-friendly policy, successfully advocated for the Richmond Bus Loop, got the youth voice on council, and oversaw the final stages of the Velodrome build. Dana brings your voice to council and promotes Richmond as a vibrant community suitable for all ages with safe walking and cycling. She seeks re-election to continue to work hard for you on water quality, road safety, traffic congestion, air quality, urban design, and environmental management. Dana’s priorities: “We need to increase transparency at council, encourage small affordable housing options, solve long-term transport issues, protect fertile productive land on the Waimea Plains, promote accessible spaces and safe walking and cycling, and create resilient communities that respond to effects of climate change.”

I am Brent Maru and I am standing as your next Mayor of Tasman. I commit to focusing on reconnecting with you the ratepayers throughout our settlements and to rebuild a Council based on high trust and transparency. For the past 19yrs I have worked for Sport Tasman, my team manage facilities such as the Richmond Town Hall, Saxton Stadium and the Motueka Recreation Centre. I have served on many committees and boards, both regionally and nationally and have gained sound governance experience. I am a proven effective chair. I care about the community, as a Justice the Peace, Restorative Justice Community Panel Member and High School Board of Trustee Chair to name a few. Having work with Council’s for 20 years I understand how Council works and I understand how to achieve change. As Mayor I will bring together your diverse selection of newly elected members and build you an effective governance team. A team that will engage in robust debate, a team built on a culture of service, a Council that has a culture of, “How can we help? I provide you with honest, open, positive, hardworking and transparent leadership, Vote for Change. Vote MARU for Mayor.

Living in Appleby operating Greenwood Park, I’ve witnessed first-hand the impact of the lack of central government funding for our roads and infrastructure in our region. This is impacting on our safety and is causing our roads to be clogged up every morning and evening. I have a vision for a reliable and timely public transport. We need a transport network that links Motueka and Mapua to Richmond as well as linking Wakefield and Brightwater to Richmond. I am running for council because there are some serious issues around debt, infrastructure and under-resourcing of our region by central government that needs to be dealt with over the next 3 years. I’m an energetic, hard working advocate with a common-sense approach for dealing with important issues like roading, water, environmental issues, housing and well-being, as these will impact on the future growth and prosperity of our region. The role of Councillor must be people-centric! I’ll strive to ensure that all decisions I make are for the betterment of all ratepayers. If you want a councillor who will hold to a common-sense approach, focus on financial responsibility and hold to sustainability of environmental and economic needs then tick Hayden Stevenson for Moutere - Waimea Ward.

Rates affordability is an issue that is only going to become worse. We have some of the highest rates in the country and they are growing faster than our wages and pensions, even at the 3% cap that has been introduced by the TDC. Any increase in rates should be linked to inflation and wage growth. One in five people in our region are over 65 and with the ageing population it will hit 40% within 20 years. While we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, the average income in Tasman is 14% lower than the rest of the country. With the great growth that we have experienced in our region, house prices have increased, but the estimated house price going up does not put more money in your bank account for increased rates calculated on the new value plus the 3% rates increase. Rates need to be realistic and affordable. We need a Council that will work with business and industry to grow the value of the local economy through cutting bureaucracy and red tape. And by being financially responsible and accountable on all Council activities and projects. Let me be your voice, Vote Stan Holland.

I have moved back to the Wakefield area after living in Wellington for the past 15 years. My career was with the Department of Conservation. I started in the Nelson Office and ended up as Chief Financial Officer and also Deputy Director General of Corporate Services. DOC is an organisation delivering services similar in nature to TDC. It builds infrastructure, looks after biodiversity and water and performs regulatory functions. This is the knowledge and experience I can contribute. I have personally been accountable for large projects and overseeing a $500m annual budget. But I’m not just a numbers person. Previously when living in Wakefield I was part of the founding committee that established the Wakefield Health Centre and I served on the School Board. I am someone who has experienced the community working together to solve a problem and I want to be part of that again. I have a Bachelor of Business Studies and I am a Chartered Accountant. As I am now retired I have the time, passion, commitment, skills and experience to make a contribution around the TDC table and I hope you give me that opportunity.

Election Challenge: Put your money where your mouth is. If elected to council, for every $1 million the Waimea Community Dam comes in under its $104.4 million budget (all costs included) I will donate $1000 to Friends of Flora for their biodiversity programmes. My challenge is to all those councillors that voted for the dam, to commit to return $1000 of their salary to TDC ratepayers for every $1 million (all costs included) that the dam goes over budget. If Tim King is elected mayor (on 3 times the salary of councillors) to pay $3000 for every $1 million over budget. If for any reason the dam is not built or fit for purpose, then they return to ratepayers ALL their term of office salary. I will keep you informed on any up takes. ACCOUNTABILITY. Lack of trust is a major issue that we need to tackle to successfully move forward together. Accountability is something we need to establish. Efficiency also needs to be established and councillors need to take control and stop the tail wagging the dog. A culture change from staff with standards set and the example set by a Mayor, deputy Mayor and councillors that have integrity that you can trust.

Julie Nevin is a voice for our natural world and for every generation. She says that when Tasman District Council invests in our community’s future, they are navigating our way forward within global environmental changes which impact us all. “Our world - the rivers, oceans, land and climate that are the foundation of everything we have - needs us to have courage now. We need to do things differently. This is my promise: I will stand firm in Council for the change we need.” She will keep Council’s focus on building healthy ecosystems and resilient communities, encouraging innovative environmental solutions to create a cleaner, healthier, safer region. She will advocate for community-centred sustainable development, for a diverse, low-carbon, resource-efficient economy, and for bringing business, Council and communities together to accelerate this work. A former teacher, a psychology graduate and environmental issues student, and a mother, she feels strongly that “it’s time to create a Tasman that will thrive through our children’s lifetimes and beyond.” She invites you to join in the community conversations that she is facilitating across the Moutere-Waimea Ward throughout September to share your ideas about sustainability and resilience in your community: see julienevin.weebly.com.

Greetings friends, as we run down to election time perhaps it’s time to pause and consider the beautiful part of the world we call home. We enjoy peace, a pleasant climate, efficient services and all-round harmony. Much of the world beyond our shores knows little of such things. We generally eat well and play peacefully, our food grows in a healthy environment, our infant mortality is low and our children are generally well-nurtured. So much to be thankful for. These blessings do not exist of their own accord, however. We must look after the sources of this good life; to this end we need to show concern for the supply of our food, our disposal of waste and our environment in general. These are some of the pillars upon which our healthy population depends. They are front and centre in my mind, yours too, possibly. My travels over much of Planet Earth convince me over and again of the good fortune which is ours. I have seen so often the damaged lives of children and adults attempting to exist below the poverty line, searching rubbish heaps for scraps of food, half-starving in other words. We need to take care of our environment and our people. That has always been my creed - it will remain so. Come along on the journey.

From the poorly designed, drab classrooms a bright, light, open-plan space has been created at Brightwater School that both the staff and the students love. The senior block has been converted from three separate classrooms into one long, open-plan building. Wasted space like the old cloakroom has been utilised. “The idea was to encourage collaborative learning, in a place where the students can work alongside each other and one person isn’t carried by the group, but the group as a whole making an impact,” says

Cooked CHICKEN + COCA COLA 1.5L for only $

Young readers quizzed at library Susan Johnson Last Thursday, Richmond Library held its annual school book quiz. Students aged 8-9 years from the Tasman district had to read three books, two fiction, one non-fiction and then answer questions. It was entirely voluntary and teams that turned up in fancy dress were also judged and could win a prize. Three of the rounds were based on recently published books, Cook’s Cook by Gavin Bishop, The Mapmakers Race by Eirlys Hunter and Backyard Beasts by Ned Barraud. The final round was general questions based on books the children would have likely read during

their childhood. They competed in teams of four and the favourite book amongst the young readers appeared to have been ‘Mapmaker Race,’ “I enjoyed reading it” said Lillian Southward. Teammates Oliver Martin and Paige Clarke agreed and Evie Mollett added, “the quiz is a lot of fun”. The winners were from Wakefield. The group in second was from Hope and the third was from Brightwater, who also took home the best-dressed prize for their recreation of the Baudelaire family from the Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. Richmond PaperPlus donated books to be given as prizes.

Walking football is a guarantee of fun and physical activity every Wednesday, at 6pm, at Hope Hall. Photo: Bruno Saia.

Walking Football cup fundraises for prostate cancer awareness Stu Reid A group of 50-plus aged guys got together earlier this year and started what is believed to be the first Walking Football Club in New Zealand. Originating in the UK, the rules are slightly different from those of outdoor football, but the concept is the same

- playing football. You’re just not allowed to run. Founder of the local club, Steve Clark, says that Walking Football is a variant of association football that is aimed to keep people aged over 50 involved in the sport. It is one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK, and from small

beginnings here in the region, the regular numbers at the club are increasing with new friendships being formed every week. On Wednesday, 25 September, the club will hold its first Prostate Cup Fundraising Tournament at the Hope Hall from 6pm, with all proceeds being donated to the Blue September

Prostate Cancer awareness fund. It is a 5-a-side tournament and a team entry is $50. For more information you can contact Steve through the email: walkingfootballnelson@gmail. com. Bowater Honda and Silky Saws NZ proudly support the Prostate Cup.

Waimea-based lawn bowler Shannon McIlroy’s stock continues to rise on the greens. The New Zealand Blackjack and world number one, Shannon rounded out a stellar season on the greens, taking out the Men’s Player of the Year and later was recognised as the Summerset Supreme Winner at the Bowls New Zealand annual awards dinner at Auckland’s Eden Park. In a bumper season, McIlroy lengthened his resume by adding the World Champion of Champion Singles, two gold medals at the Asia Pacific championships in the singles and pairs and finished third in the 2019 Summerset National Singles – though with some major international events and the World Bowls 2020 looming large, you can be sure McIlroy is already pacing himself with an eye on more silverware and world prestige. The Stoke Club bowler also got a medal haul on the Gold Coast several months back.

s w e N g n i h s Fi Spring, finally! Dominik Berghamer It has only been a few days so far, but if the temperatures stay as they are it can only be a couple of weeks until the snapper appear in the bay – the first ones have been caught already! Try the shallows off Rabbit Island, the 30m mark, and Delaware Bay. Traditionally, the big ones show up first, so it’s the best time of the year for a trophy catch – if you’ve got the patience! Sharks and red cod can be plentiful and prove to be a pain in the proverbial quite often. Avoiding them can be difficult, try to use paddle crabs as bait. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club has launched into a new season with its open day on Sunday. The weather played along perfectly and over fifty visitors

took the opportunity to find out about our club and to have heaps of fun in the process. A bouncy castle, a BBQ, raffles, a fortune wheel and a big casting competition all helped entertain our guests, while the committee members answered questions, gave fishing tips, filed new memberships and handed out welcome gifts for new members. A couple of really nice spot prizes like rugby tickets and Hunting & Fishing vouchers marked the end of a great open day. Last season set a new record with almost 250 members, and this year will be even bigger and better. Join us before the end of October to be in the draw for more fantastic prizes. Our sponsors are again very generous! Find more info on www.dawn breakers.co.nz or on facebook.

Cycling series heads to Wakefield

AED near fishing and hunting Richmond clubs

Jacob Page

An Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) has been installed outside the Nelson Marlborough Fish and Game, Champion Road premises by the Nelson Trout Fishing Club and the Nelson Branch of the New Zealand Deer Stalkers Association. Both clubs, along with other outdoor groups, use these rooms as their base. They wanted to provide something worthwhile for their community and decided on the AED project to benefit the surrounding residents and users of the building. “The nearest public access AED shown on the Aedlocationsnz was at the swimming pool in Salisbury Road. Recently another 24-hour one was installed at Jennian Homes office, also on Champion Road. Providing one at the Fish and Game rooms was a no brainer” said NTFC president Barry Howell. The AED is mounted in a secure cabinet on the outside of the building and is available 24/7. “According to the St John Cardiac Arrest National database, five people a day suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in New Zealand. Of those five, only 9% were defibrillated with a public access defibrillator”. Barry said both clubs hoped that local residents would become familiar with its location. It has been added to the aedlocationsnz site,” Barry said. “Our decision was always to make sure it was accessible 24/7. The cabinet is alarmed so it acts not only as a deterrent but alerts others nearby that assistance may be needed” he said. This AED locations app is free to download and shows the locations of over 9000 AEDs throughout New Zealand. It can be used by anyone as well as ambulance control rooms. Barry said “AEDs are located at all Z service stations, ASB banks and many more public locations in the Nelson Richmond area” An AED delivers a lifesaving electric shock when someone suffers a cardiac arrest and the heart stops beating. “They have been used a number of times in the Nelson Richmond area and are responsible for saving a number of local residents’ lives,” Barry said. The Nelson Trout Fishing Club has about 70 members and meets at the Fish and Game Rooms on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. The club supports local fly fishers by providing education, guest speakers, a mentor programme and club trips around the country. The club is heavily involved in the kidsfor- casting programme that supports getting youth into fly fishing. Anyone interest in coming along or join should visit the web site www.nelsontroutfishing club.com or email secretary@nelsontroutfishingclub.com.

New Public Water Supply Bylaw adopted

River Road closed for pine logging

The Tasman District Council has adopted a new bylaw to protect and manage the community’s access to safe, secure water.

A section of River Road near the Waimea River is closed from this week to allow safe removal of pines near the river. No vehicle access will be permitted:

The bylaw includes a water restrictions protocol for how we will manage water use during a drought or an emergency.

• 7.00 am to 5.00 pm weekdays

The Consolidated Bylaw Chapter 10 – Public Water Supply Bylaw 2016 (Amended 2019) comes into effect on 1 October 2019. You can view a copy of the bylaw on our website, tasman.govt.nz, or at any Council service centre or library.

It’s time to vote in the place that you love! Voting documents are hitting mailboxes this week so it’s time to learn more about your candidates and choose the people you want to represent you on the Tasman District Council and Nelson Marlborough District Health Board for the next three years. Voting is open until 12 October. Along with the voting documents, you’ll receive a selfaddressed and postage-paid envelope. Post your vote in a NZ Post box or outlet by 8 October at the latest. You can also take your voting documents to any Tasman District Council service centre during office hours or drop into the after-hours box. On election day, Saturday 12 October, you can take your voting documents to the Richmond, Motueka or Takaka libraries before 12 noon.

STV or FPP? This year, you will also be asked to vote on whether Tasman District Council should change its electoral system to the Single Transferrable Vote (STV) system from First Past the Post (FPP). In FPP, voters tick a candidate and the one who receives the most votes is elected. In STV, voters rank candidates in order of their preference. A flyer explaining the two systems is included with the voting documents. Find out more

• Tuesday 24 September until Friday 4 October Access to the river off River Road and the Waimea West walkway/cycleway along the stopbank (entry off Livingston Road) is also closed. Access is available as normal during the weekends. A map of the closed area can be viewed at tasman.govt.nz/ link/current-road-works.

Upcoming maritime events The Harbourmaster has (or may soon) grant authorisations for the following events. These events may affect public use of the maritime area for a certain period of time. Date: 11 September 2019 - 1 April 2022 Location: Section of the Lee River Activity: Road widening, dam construction Date: 25 January 2020 Location: Tata Beach/Ligar Inlet Activity: Cardboard boat race More information about the Harbourmaster’s directions for these events is available at tasman.govt.nz/link/maritimeevents.

HAVE YOUR SAY: For details of our current consultations, head to tasman.govt.nz/feedback.

Reduced speeds proposed to cut serious crashes We propose to reduce speed limits on 67 roads across the District to reduce road deaths and serious injuries, and ensure consistency across the roading network. Public consultation is open from 20 September to 1 November. Lower speed limits are suggested on roads that have been identified as providing the greatest opportunity to reduce deaths and serious injuries. In addition, lower limits are suggested on other roads to: • address inconsistencies in the current speed limits; • reduce the severity of crashes on some roads which have a poor safety record and where the current speed limit is not safe or appropriate; • respond to growth and development in some areas which is changing the nature and use of some roads; • and recognise wider community support for changes on some roads. Research shows an undeniable relationship between speed and road safety – there is no other risk factor that has a more powerful impact on accidents or injuries than speed.

The proposed roads were selected following a review that included looking at roads requested by the community, and an assessment of the highest-risk roads. A joint Nelson Tasman speed survey earlier this year, completed by about 2000 people, found that:

Bikers Breakfast

• 76% of Tasman respondents think speed limits should be safe and appropriate for the road type, rather than the historic blanket 100kmh rural and 50kmh urban speed limits

Free BBQ and coffee!

• 81% of Tasman respondents think speed limits should be less than 50kmh on busy residential/school roads

• Sunday 29 September, 10.00 am - 1.00 pm at Filco Nelson, 141 – 143 Quarantine Road, Nelson.

• 81% of Tasman respondents think speed limits should be less than 100kmh on narrow sealed rural roads

• Bike demonstrations available

25 SEPTEMBER 2019

Road safety has deteriorated both nationally and in Tasman over the past three years. We want to reverse that trend and make sure our residents and visitors return home to their loved ones once they have finished their journeys.

All your 2019 elections information can be found at tasman.govt.nz/link/elections.

In the first week in October, our contractor Downer will resurface sections of Wensley Road between Waverley Street and Chelsea Avenue. Parts of the road surface have deteriorated over winter and with warmer weather arriving, it is a good time to carry out permanent repairs. The work is expected to take three days, weather permitting. The roadworks will reduce traffic to one lane, with stop/go controllers directing traffic flow. Please take it slow and follow the instructions of the traffic controllers. Thank you for your patience while the work is completed.

VOTE

gender balance for diversity in Council

Nelson matters

Voting papers arrive in the post this week for local elections. It matters that our Council and District Health Board are well governed and I encourage everyone to vote. Our Council has assets of $1.4 billion, 278 staff and annually collects $76 million in rates. We need top governance skills given this equates to $100 million in assets and $5 million of rates per Councillor. A good Council also needs diversity of gender, age and skills. We need Councillors who understand infrastructure, business and Tasman’s key primary industries of farming, horticulture, fishing and forestry. We also need Councillors who will safeguard the regions

stunning lifestyle. The Council faces growth pressures on infrastructure and the environment. I have huge respect for those Councillors who had the courage to back the Waimea Dam. These big projects always have critics and it is easier for Councillors to fudge, defer or pretend other, easier sounding options exist than to make a positive decision. Tasman is positioning itself better than any other region in New Zealand to deliver better water quality, growth in horticulture and more secure supplies for town water. The biggest challenge for the Tasman District Council over the next three years will be seeing through

the construction of the $100 million Waimea Dam that is now underway. The risk for ratepayers from an anti-dam Mayor and Council is that the project will be undermined. We need Tasman’s elected representatives totally focused on delivering it on time and on budget. The next big infrastructure issue for Tasman is transport. The road network around Richmond needs major investment to cope with growth. I pledge to work with Tasman’s next Mayor and Council to get the upgrades in intersections and State Highways to make our roads less congested and safer. I also urge voters to take an equal

of public service to our community with 12 years as mayor. Richard has led with tolerance, integrity and compassion. I cringe at some of the personal abuse and attacks Richard has weathered even more so in this age of social media. His commitment to Tasman through the horrific fires earlier this year was an exemplar of leadership. We should all wish him and his family the best for the future. Good luck to all the candidates. Voter turnout was only 49% in 2016. If you don’t vote you can’t complain! I commit to working with whomever the community elects to enhance our region. Advt.

I have been advocating for a major redevelopment of our outdated Nelson Hospital buildings with problems of seismic risk and insufficient beds. We need a Health Board that recognises how important this is to Nelson’s future. I also commend the Councils pre-election report on its website.
