A huge post-lockdown backlog of freight and packages is creating headaches for local businesses
who need supplies and parts, but your local courier is not to blame. Weeks’ worth of backlogs from Alert Levels 4 and 3 are causing delays across the country, including in the Tasman region, where locals and businesses are waiting upwards of 2 weeks for deliveries
that in the past would have been overnight. Grant Blanchett from Stihl Shop in Richmond says that overnight freight is taking up to two weeks. “We’ve been having issues with parts. It’s mainly things coming from Auckland. “
Grant says that pre-lockdown they could order a part and have it in store the next day. Now, they are waiting nearly 14 days. Grant says that there is a flow-on effect. “We’re running out of storage space as well. Normally we get a
part and then it is out right away. Now gear is sitting in the workshop taking up space, it’s slowing people down.” “You can’t get upset with the local courier. It’s the fact that the

Online buys to blame for local Search for missing kiwi trampers courier delays to businesses from PAGE 1 CourierPost facilities in Auckland are extremely backed up.” Grant says that for Stihl Shop the main problem is overnight freight from Auckland. “Overnight freight is a big problem, which is partly due to a reduction in regional flights.” Mason, from Pools, Spas, and Essentials in Richmond, says that the company has been experiencing delays getting parts that they need. “It is taking much longer than normal. We ordered some parts on Friday last week and we got them Thursday – so that is near-
ly a week later.” Brett Page, of Nicholls Auto Centre, says they’ve been having issues getting parts from Auckland. “We’ve mainly been having issues with North Island stuff. “When we’re getting parts from Auckland and even sending stuff to Auckland.” Meanwhile, freight from Christchurch has been overnight. “It’s creating a backlog for us in turn because we can’t finish a job until we get the parts we need.” New Zealand Post has said that the backlog of parcels that accumulated throughout Alert Levels 3 and 4 has been to blame for long delays.
They say that CourierPost was experiencing a ‘record’ backlog after the country moved into Alert Level 2. A spokesperson for CourierPost said that the company had received 3.5 millon parcels during Alert Level 3 as more online retailers opened, along with a backlog of parcels that were unable to be delivered during Alert Level 4. Online shopping was to blame, with CourierPost not only trying to clear the backlog from levels 3 and 4, but also dealing with a huge increase in parcels due to retailers opening up again and processing seven weeks’ worth of online orders. The company has set up
temporary processing sites and is operating eleven sites 24/7 to try and clear the backlog, as well as bringing on extra vans and staff. “This is a one-off situation.” A normal day for CourierPost is processing 110,000 parcels, with the Christmas peak being 295,000. Currently the company is receiving over 530,000 parcels per day. Mark Holland, manager of TNL Nelson, acknowledged that they were having issues as well. “It’s a backlog. As the country gets back to normality, it will take some time for everyone to catch up on the backlog of freight.”

There have still been no signs of the two trampers missing in Kahurangi National Park. Jessica O’Connor and Dion Reynolds, both from the Tasman area, went into the national park on May 9 and failed to return. It is understood they started near the Anatori River car park. Five teams made up of LandSar volunteers and Police began a search and rescue operation on May 19, with search teams coming up empty-handed in the first week and casting the net wider to try and find the pair. Last Thursday, May 21, a Royal New Zealand Air Force NH90 Helicoper
searched inland from the Anatori River through the night. The team used night vision goggles to look for fires or torches, but nothing was found. The helicopter will continue to deploy search teams. Footprints and a historic campsite were found near the Webb River, but police were still working to confirm whether or not they belonged to the missing trampers. Bad weather and heavy rain forced teams to abandon the search over the weekend, with a heavy rain warning issued for Sunday afternoon through to Monday.

Broadgreen Intermediate students in Room 3 have been using the Waimea and Nelson Weeklies to become more engaged with their local community. Photo: Matt McCrorie.
Students use the Weeklies to connect to community Matt McCrorie When local teacher Shaz Murray prepared to head back to school after weeks in isolation, she had several goals. Getting students off their screens and connecting with each other were the main ones, but more than that, she wanted to get her students connected to their local community. It wasn’t until the first week of Alert Level 3, when she was reading the Waimea Weekly, that she thought of a way to
engage her students with their community. For the term, Shaz’s class, Room 3 at Broadgreen Intermediate had been focusing on the importance of being connected to your local community. Shaz says that one of the topics her students have been studying is ‘How community newspapers have helped the community throughout and after the lockdown.’ So, Shaz picked up a stack of Waimea Weekly and Nelson

Weekly papers, and got her students reading. They focused on community-based articles. “A lot of our learning has been around local community stories in the papers, and getting the students connected to ‘the place where they stand’ which is their local area, and the community papers have been a great way to do that.” The whiteboard in Room 3 is covered in comments the students have made about how community papers have been helpful during the Covid crisis.

Surgery backlog begins to clear
Bars now open for business Matt McCrorie Reporter

Just over half the elective surgeries planned for April went ahead at Nelson Hospital under Alert Level 4, with the ways to clear the backlog now being planned. According to Lexie O’Shea, general manager clinical services at Nelson Marlborough Health, 459 out of the 839 procedures planned went ahead. In response to Covid-19, all healthcare services were reprioritised, except for all urgent and nondeferrable surgery procedures and assessments. Lexie says they now seeing a steady increase in the number of non-urgent surgeries, procedures, and outpatient visits. “The length of time to clear the backlog will depend on the resources available, for example, facilities, equipment and staff.” Lexie says that the virtual consultations that were taking place throughout Alert Level 4 have continued to remain a popular alternative to. “Many of our outpatient clinics are continuing to be run using virtual health or telephone consultations where appropriate.” For example, paediatric outpatients successfully converted their diabetes clinic into a virtual clinic via Zoom following the lockdown. She says several clinical areas have been gearing up for virtual health consultations and are well placed to move to this format in future. “NMH is also exploring ways to streamline waiting room settings to reduce physical contact.”
While the country eagerly moved into Alert Level 2 on Thursday, May 14, there was bad news for bars and their loyal patrons alike. Venues that mainly serve alcohol would have to hold out for another week before they could get the pints pouring again. While it was a bitter wait, Tracy Banner, owner of Sprig and Fern Upper Queen, is thrilled to be back. While the Sprig and Fern does serve food, Tracy said that it wouldn’t have been a practical move to open when restaurants did, a week earlier when the country moved to level 2. “We have a small kitchen, and it was going to be too hard. We couldn’t provide that high standard of service, so for us it was about staying closed for another week and then letting everybody back in.” Friday ‘after work drinks’ will feel different for locals. There won’t be any hanging around at the bar, with table

In order to operate, bars and hospitality businesses have to follow the government’s ‘Three S’s’ system, that was outlined by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern – Seated, Separation, and Single Server. This means bars will only be able to cater to the number of people they can seat. There must be social distancing between people and tables, and each table must have just one person serving
them. That also means no ordering at the bar. “It will be a slightly different operation, but we are ready.” Tracy says she understands why it will be tough for some bars across the country. “There are considerations – it is going to take more staff, that’s going to be tough for some small businesses. We’ll need extra people to make it happen with the service.” Tracy said that bookings came as soon as they announced they were reopen-
ing. “It’s interesting because we are taking bookings, but we are going to have to be turning people away. “We understand people want to get back. We are a hub for the local community, and we are mindful of keeping people safe. “The team was so excited. We operated on a skelton crew, doing click and collect and some deliveries, but the team were ready to see each other and the locals, too.”

Working from home really works for some Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Telecommuting to someone who works in an office means getting your work done through the internet and phone. It’s a phrase that has been bandied about a lot more over the last few months as Coronavirus level 4 lockdown shifted people away from the office and into the safety of their own homes. Beth Catley, a Tasman District Council employee, worked from home through the whole of level 4 lockdown but has adopted the council’s hybrid approach to working from home during level 2. Beth’s working mainly in the office but chooses to work from home if there’s any chance she’s not feeling well. Beth’s grateful for having had the chance to continue to get through her work during lockdown though, a thought no doubt shared by many. Without the internet and computers linked to organisation’s servers, tackling the mound of seven weeks’ work would have been a
daunting task. But working in the office would be Beth’s personal choice. She prefers it, while other employees from the Tasman District Council have chosen to remain working from home because they prefer that type of work environment. “I missed having that interaction with people throughout the building”, Beth said, “I get a lot of energy and motivation from being around other people”. Beth had a shared bubble situation with her children’s dad in level 4 lockdown and said, “it was good to have those couple of days of uninterrupted concentration time when the kids were with their dad, it was definitely more of a struggle on the other days when the kids were home with me, from a work point of view”. An advantage of being in the office is the chance to build relationships with co-workers as well as with staff from other departments. Those casual chats in the hallway or while making your coffee in the staff kitchen can have advantages that you’re not privy to while working

Video conferencing, as opposed to in-person meetings, seem to dictate people staying more focused. “It’s not as easy to interject and talk all at the same time”, said Beth. One of Beth’s teammates works in Golden Bay and, being a remote worker, is used to being the only one videoing in for team meetings. This opportunity has allowed remote workers to
feel more of a part of their team when everybody is joining the meeting via videoconferencing. Beth mentioned another positive impact that involved all council staff. Rather than sending out an all-staff email, the leadership team gave an in-person update via videoconferencing. It provides a more personal touch than an email. “We got some really good feedback from people saying how much they’d enjoyed that,” said Beth.

Brightwater crash driver ‘thought he had time’
Wakefield has cruel cat shooter
A man has admitted carelessly using a vehicle causing the death of 78-year-old Wakefield man Kevin John Edwards in a crash in Brightwater earlier this year. Kevin spent 9 days in a critical condition before he died from his injuries at Christchurch Hospital on February 3. Reinald Bongnaim pleaded guilty to two charges of careless or inconsiderate vehicle operation causing injury and one of causing death, in the Nelson District Court on Monday. The 35-year-old Vanuatu national is in New Zealand on a seasonal employment visa and was granted a full Vanuatuan licence four months before arriving in New Zealand. He admitted not having much driving experience here. When he came to the intersection of Lord Rutherford Rd and SH6 at 10.25am, a road he had not travelled before, he pulled out into the path of an oncoming Toyota Corolla. That car was being driven by Kevin’s wife, with his 8-year-old granddaughter in the front passenger seat and he seated directly behind his wife. The police summary of facts told how the Corolla was travelling at an estimated speed of 100kmh. Kevin’s wife tried to brake, but had nowhere to go and collided with the passenger door of Bongnaim’s vehicle. Kevin was transferred to Christchurch Intensive Care Unit where he later died. His wife suffered severe bruising to her torso, legs and face, as well as stiffness and whiplash. Their granddaughter had heavy bruising and abrasions to her collarbone, chest and hips. Bongnaim was not injured and his passenger suffered minor injuries. When spoken to by police, Bongnaim told them he had looked right and saw the car coming but thought he had enough time. He looked left then pulled out. Judge Garry Barkle convicted Bongnaim of all three charges. He will be sentenced on July 21.
In mid-January, the McIvor family moved to Wakefield to what felt like a safe, peaceful cul-de-sac. They kept both their cats, Milly and Theo, inside for the first few days to let them get accustomed to their new surroundings. Within 48 hours of releasing them outdoors for the first time Theo came back injured. His wounds appeared to have come from something like a BB-gun but the family were unable to confirm that. BB-guns are an air gun that fires projectiles in the form of pellets made of either plastic or aluminium. In New Zealand they’re normally used for pest control, for removing animals from properties such as rabbits, rats and possums. Anyone can use an airgun if they hold a New Zealand Firearms Licence or are under the supervision of someone over 18 years of age that holds a licence. Theo was shot again last month. This time it was a more severe injury with a clear hole visible on his left side. The McIvor family took him to the vet again where

Last Wednesday evening Milly turned up howling in pain, her white fur covered in blood. “Milly was so petrified”, said Jasmine McIvor, “and she was dragging her legs behind her”. She calmed down once in Jasmine’s arms. Jasmine said, “It was such a horrific thing that my daughter might never for-
get”. Again the McIvors went to the vet, determined to get an x-ray this time. The result was a confirmation of what they had feared. Milly’s injuries were the result of a shot from an air rifle and the bullet was lodged in her spine. Milly was put to sleep. Laws exist specific to the use of air guns such as a licensed owner can fire their gun on their residential property if cer-
tain protocols are adhered to. And the Crimes Act 1961 has laws regarding the harm of another person’s animal which hold imprisonment and fines. But without a confession from the person responsible, the police can do little other than offer community education on keeping straying pets off your property. The McIvor family have had a lot of contact from neighbours in surrounding streets, everyone voicing their sympathy. Aaron McIvor, father of Stella placed a post in Facebook to bring the incident to the public’s attention. The responses it brought reference to it not being the first time, some naming a company as the suspect. Most of the people who have been in contact are expressing their anger that this type of thing is able to happen and are concerned about their own pets’ safety. The McIvor’s have spent a considerable amount on visits to the vet over the last four months. They’ve had to say goodbye to a precious part of their family and are now living in an ongoing state of fear that Theo might once again become a target.

Richmond is not Nelson Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A range of newspaper clippings, dating years back, sits spread across local man Patrick McMahon’s dining room table. While they may seem random at a glance, there’s one thing that the various stories have in common. They all refer to Richmond, as Nelson. Whether it’s a story about a Waimea College student who has done well in their sporting career and grew up in Richmond, or a new building development in Richmond, each article refers to Richmond as Nelson. “I’m a proud Richmond resident, I raised our three children here, and I think Richmond is a great place to live. I think Richmond doesn’t get a fair crack.” Patrick points out that Richmond is treated like a suburb of Nelson. “We’re our own town. We have 15,000 people. That’s bigger than most towns in the South Island, so I get confused when we are treated like a suburb of Nelson.” “Motueka gets its recognition. If someone lives in Hokitika, would they say they’re living in Greymouth?” Patrick thinks that Richmond needs to carve out its own identity.

Staying safe with buried power cables around your home Many of us know that Contractors have to look out for buried power cables when they are doing roadworks. But did you know that there might be power cables buried around your house as well. Many houses built since the 1980s have underground power supplies. This means there may be an underground power cable (your service line) connecting your house to the network cables that run under the strip of land between your house and the road.
Patrick McMahon, a Richmond resident, thinks that Richmond needs more recognition after repeatedly being referred to as ‘Nelson’ in national media. Photo: Matt McCrorie.
“Everyone knows where Westport is, but we’ve got a bigger population than they do,” he says. “It’s amazing to me how many people in New Zealand don’t know where Richmond is.” Patrick has been making a note of when Richmond is referred to as Nelson for years in various different forms of media. One example is an article about the construction of the Warehouse on Queen Street in Richmond, but the headline reads, ‘Innovation starts in Nelson.’ “This is on Queen Street,
Waimea Weekly Locally Owned and Operated
Richmond. If it was on Trafalgar Street Nelson, would they write ‘Trafalgar Street, near Richmond?’ I don’t understand why people want to refer to us as Nelson.” Patrick says that Richmond residents need to be a bit more passionate about claiming Richmond’s identity as separate from Nelson. Richmond has not been part of the Nelson Province since 1876, when the Waimea County was created. “Where are the people who are meant to be promoting Richmond? Sometimes I think it’s just laziness.”

Buried cables can present a serious and potentially fatal hazard if you damage them. You should always check for buried cables before digging and before driving stakes, fence posts or warratahs into the ground on your property or in the strip of land between your property and the road.

Watch your bonfires The Tasman District Council is urging members of the public who are planning an outdoor burn to monitor weather conditions and use caution, after receiving a high number of complaints over smoky air. The council received 81 complaints about air pollution due to outdoor burns across Tasman in the past three weeks, says Environment and Planning manager Dennis BushKing. Dennis says that there are several elements contributing to the smoke pollution. “Horticulture burns have coincided with the lifting of the Civil Defence
Covid-19 fire ban, an increase in property maintenance that people have been carrying out on lifestyle and rural properties throughout the lockdown, and a period of cold, settled weather with little wind to disperse smoke.” The council encourages burning be done between 10am and 4pm, so smoke can disperse, stockpiling to burn during better conditions, or taking small piles of waste to green waste transfer stations to keep air pollution down. People should also be aware that they may need a FENZ permit in order to burn.

Maureen and Graeme Crook, owners of the Flat Rock Café in Kohatu, are relying on locals to stop in for a coffee or a meal as the international tourism market has dried up. Photo: Steve Page.
Popular Cafe reopens Matt McCrorie Reporter

When Maureen and Graeme Crook left their jobs and lives in Reefton to fix up the old Kohatu Hotel, at the turnoff to the Motueka Valley, locals thought they were mad. The pub, which had been closed and derelict for 3 years before Graeme and Maureen bought the building 9 years ago, was originally built in 1878 by the Bromell family, who still have descendants in the Nelson – Tasman area. The building was known as the Terminus, a hub for coaches. Nearly 150 years later, the building is a hub for locals and a rest spot for tourists, the Kohatu Flat Rock Café. Maureen, a teacher, and her husband Graeme, a miner, lived in Reefton, and needed a change. “We’re true West Coasters, genuine good people,” Maureen laughs. “We couldn’t believe it when the old Kohatu pub closed down. It was an icon,” says Maureen. While they knew the business model of a remote country pub could no longer survive, they felt there was a need for something there. “It’s a great place to stop. We get a lot of people using it as a meeting place, people from the West Coast meeting their cousins from Nelson.” The couple took over the place 9 years ago and had to completely rebuild it, a project that took 18 months, and have converted it to serve coffee and meals. It’s licensed too, still able to serve drinks. “It was Graeme who had the vision for the place. Everybody told us we
were crazy to start with, but after a few months the locals saw that we could make it work.” Now, after 9 years of running the business and living on site, Maureen says they are relying on locals to get around them and help the business survive after the obvious restrictions, both recent and ongoing, with the Covid-19 protocols has basically shut down overseas tourists. “We’ve had a lot of locals coming in who I think had cabin fever and were keen to get out, but it’s early days. I’m not seeing a lot of faces I don’t know.” Maureen is hoping that more Kiwi’s will travel around New Zealand during the winter and support local businesses, especially ones like the Flat Rock Café which are reliant on travellers and tourists stopping by. Despite the hard work getting the café up and running again, and Graeme taking up work as a contractor to help support the business, Maureen says it’s worth it for the people. “As soon as those happy faces started walking through the door, it reminded us why we do what we do – it’s worthwhile. “My favourite part of the business, even though living and working in the same spot can be challenging, is the people.” Maureen and Graeme are hoping more Kiwi’s will get out and explore the country and stop in to see them along the way, for a coffee, a meal, or to get to know the locals, even Maureen and Graeme. “He’s a bit hard case,” Maureen says of Graeme. “People come from far and wide to be abused by him,” she says with a smile.

With more freedoms now that we’re in alert level 2, locals have been contemplating how they will spend their time over Queen’s Birthday weekend. This year, to mark the Queen’s special day, our public holiday takes place on Monday, June 1st. With no new Covid cases linked to the relaxed restrictions in level 2, it’s great that some rules have been eased around social gatherings. From midday on Friday, May 29th, up to 100 people will be allowed to attend weddings, funerals, and church services. It will also apply to hospitality venues however they will still need to keep tables separated and enforce social distancing. But don’t let that stop you from heading out to your local bar or restaurant this weekend – go out and enjoy a nice meal with friends or family and support local hospitality businesses, just remember to toast the Queen while you’re there!
It’s been great to see lots of people out and about enjoying shopping in level 2 and with so many retail stores open, the long weekend is the ideal opportunity to stock up on warm winter clothing, footwear, heaters, hotties, blankets, toastie makers, knitting needles, books, hardware, electronic gear, whatever you need for the cold months ahead! It’s fantastic that we have all been heeding the call to ‘buy local,’ but let’s keep our foot on the peddle if we want to keep our economy pumping. Andy Reed, owner of Village Cycles on Queen Street says a lot of people are making a conscious effort to support local business which is really great. “After what we had in April, we really appreciate the great support we have had from locals.” Andy says his business is 100 percent locally owned and operated and employs 11 staff who live locally. “I think it’s
super important with what we are going through, that people make conscious decisions about where they are going to spend their money, because they will have less at the moment, and if you take the position to keep the money within the region, it benefits everyone.” Brent Curtis, General Manager of Plankville also encourages people to buy local products and use local services. “Our products are made with wood from locally grown trees. A lot of people who make local products source all of their materials from all over the place, but we make our products from local Redwood trees, Macrocarpa, Elm, Oak, Cedar, Walnut and Cypress trees. Brent has been in business for 15 years and proudly employs locals. “On our Facebook page, you will see a Redwood shed on there. Redwood Trees were cut down to make way for the

ing with the bees. They’re amazing producers and fascinating to watch as they perform amazing feats of teamwork and communication. Honeybees perform a ‘waggle dance’ which they choreograph to show their hive mates where to find the best pollen. Angle and speed all come into play in this amazing communication technique. Globally there are concerns for the growing decline of the honeybee. Parasites are one of these concerns. Introduced into New Zealand 20 years ago they are the reason why honeybees no longer existing in the wild here. Instead, they now call hives home and are reliant on humans for their ongoing protection. Bee and human interaction ensures mutual benefits all round. The bees provide farmers with the pollination they need for their crops, the beekeepers provide the bees with a safe homelife, and to finish off, the bees provide beekeepers with honey.

Harcourts Richmond Harcourts Richmond welcomes new rural property consultant Graham Cook. Over the past 35 years, Graham Cook has had wide experience and good knowledge dealing with people and property through various occupations. Naturally, his decision to join Harcourts Richmond in March this year was the right pathway for his career. Born in the South Island, Graham’s father was a schoolteacher, so his family lived in various places around New Zealand. “I did part of my primary schooling at Ranzau Primary School, then I went to Waimea College, so it feels great to come home” says Graham. Graham did a degree through Lincoln University before moving to Matamata to work on a dairy farm. He then had roles in the Valuation Department, in Te Kuiti and Tauranga and became a Registered Valuer. Graham met his wife while abroad and when he came back to New Zealand, decided to reside in the Waikato where

He also brings a lot of experience to his role in the rural sector. “Having spent many years living on a lifestyle

When it comes to land, he understands the raft of things that make up its value – such as the location, contour, soil type dictating the stock numbers and production achievable. “I can relate with people from all walks of life – I’m honest, professional, and have a good work ethic.” Graham says the Harcourts Richmond team are great to work with and the com-

Damien O’Connor Rural communities are an essential part of New Zealand’s economy and culture; they act as guardians and stewards of our landscapes and resources. The value rural communities add to both our region and our country are significant, not only to our Primary Industries, but also to our wellbeing. This is important now more than ever as farmers, growers and producers help with New Zealand’s economic recovery from COVID-19. They are part of the life blood of New Zealand, creating jobs, enhancing our communities, creating new innovations and producing the food we eat. It’s impressive how our farmers, growers and rural communities come together to support each other, especially over the last couple of months. It’s important that we support these unique communities and value people and the products they produce. Do take some time to visit our local rural towns over the coming months and discover
how wonderful these important communities are. Training without a team not easy Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
For many players like Waimea flyer Michael Stringer, the wait to get back on the footy field has been a long one. The 21-year-old says it’s been tough not training with teammates for almost ten weeks now. New Zealand Rugby has developed ‘Return to Rugby Requirements’ which apply to all levels of the game. All community and club rugby
must follow the three stages of preparation - prepare to train, prepare to play and play. Phase One is still in effect meaning training has yet to resume with a return date to competition earmarked for mid-June. Michael says even without the team environment, he has motivated himself to stay fit and keep his skills sharp. “During lockdown I still managed to do some hill running and get to the field for some kicking and sprinting.” However, Michael was unable
to train for the physicality of premier rugby. “Contact was the hardest skill to keep up and will take a bit for the body to get used to again.” Despite the disruption, Michael is confident his side will re-establish itself among the competition favourites. “We have a good team and will gel again quite quickly.” Waimea enjoyed a strong 2019 season culminating in an epic win over Marist in the Nelson club final, and Michael is hopeful of emulating that form.
“We want another trophy.” The dynamic utility is also looking forward to reigniting the rivalry with Marist. “They have a strong team so it will be good to get a few games against them, just not as many draws this time.” Michael has been a rep rugby regular in recent years and should he come close to the form he showed last season will be right in the mix for The Mako. “Personally, I just want to have a good run and hope for higher honours.”

Historic country home still stands For those unfamiliar with Telenius Road, it is the stretch that runs from State Highway 6 to intersect with Higgins and Lord Rutherford Roads in Spring Grove. It is named after Carl Bernhard Telenius. Carl, also known as Charles, was born 1842 in Finland. He began a seafaring life, journeying to China and other Far Eastern ports as well as to the United States of America. In the 1860s he enlisted in the Union Army fighting against the Confederate States in the American Civil War. It wasn’t long before the desire to travel had him back on the high seas. He crewed on the missionary schooner John Williams and settled for several
Telenius House, in Spring Grove. Photo: Supplied. years on one of the islands in the Tongan group where he pursued life as a trader. He next migrated
to Victoria in South Australia where he pursued some shorebased occupations. Carl arrived
in New Zealand from Sydney in 1879, landing on the West Coast, probably at Hokitika. He moved north to the Waimea district where he built a large two-storied house at Spring Grove in 1884. This was situated on the corner of Telenius Road and Higgins Road. He set up a shop as a draper and importer. Carl gained his New Zealand naturalisation on 4 November 1890. His first wife was Lydia Walker and they married in 1898. Their son, Carl, was born 1899. Lydia died after a long and severe illness and was buried early in 1907. With an 8-year-old son to look after, Carl remarried late in 1907 to Elizabeth Dickens. Carl travelled the district selling
his goods while his wife managed the store. After living in the house at Spring Grove until 1908, Carl moved to, and opened a store in, Wakefield. 1911 saw him selling all stock as well as the house in Spring Grove. He was held in high regard by the residents of the area and those who had done business with him over the years. His first wife Lydia was buried in the Wakapuaka Cemetery in 1907, and his second wife Elizabeth who died in 1944, was interred with her sister, also at Wakapuaka. Carl died of bronchial pneumonia, being interred in the Spring Grove Cemetery, 24 July 1931.
Renowned glass artists urge people to ‘buy local’ ‘Buy Local’ and ‘Buy New Zealand Made’ has always been important for small businesses and more so now, than ever. “We all need to support each other, our own community as well as our country at this time,” says Marie Simburg Höglund who has co-created art glass with Ola Höglund for nearly four decades, in their Tasman-based studio. The Höglund’s stunning glass artwork is internationally renowned and the items are highly collectible and make wonderful gifts. During the lockdown, the talented pair came up exciting new ideas, but first they need to get through winter. “Our hope is with the support of the community and domestic visitors to our region, we will be able to stay open this winter. We will have shorter opening hours but we will still be open 7 days.” For safety reason and to respect the guidelines for physical distancing, visitors will be able to view the glassblowing in action through a window between the showroom and the glassblowing studio. During the lockdown, Marie and Ola have been busy creating new work which is suitable as gifts and for adorning your home. “It’s the creation process itself and the soft, molten glass that is inspiring. We come up with new
creations all the time. The latest is a vase in the shape of a heart.” The Höglund’s unique glass is distinctively bold and beautiful: vibrant vases and goblets, pretty paperweights and perfume bottles, lovely fused glass jewellery, colourful platters and more. “Our art glass is available online via our website. All purchases are beautifully gift boxed and well packed for delivery, locally and worldwide. We include a gift card and send directly to the receiver.” Ola and Marie will soon celebrate 40 years of creating glass in New Zealand. “Our two sons Ossian and Oliver are both glassblowers and now when our two granddaughters are both at school, our daughterin-law Annabel is back in the glassblowing studio training as a glass artist. Both girls love helping out in the gallery with the glass displays. “While Liliana is looking forward to work with ‘warm glass’ as in making fused tableware and glass jewellery, Isabella is looking forward to work with ‘hot glass’ during her school holidays and learning how to blow glass. You will love the Höglund’s colourful and spacious showroom at 52 Lansdowne Road in Appleby. Business Update. Adv.

Speedway hopeful for two-night meetings Jacob Page Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The Nelson Speedway Association is hoping to get council consent to run two-night meetings from next season. President Wayne Martin says his organisation, which runs 15 race nights at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway from October to April each year, wants some of those nights to run backto-back for major national championships. He said two-night shows would also help attract higher calibre entrants from around New Zealand. “What we are trying to achieve is to have a bit of flexibility on the nights we run our meetings. “We aren’t asking or intending to run any more meetings because we have a limit of 15 a season, but we’d like to run some back-toback nights, ” he says. Currently there is a one night show every fortnight on average, but Wayne said if they were grant-
ed approval to run two-night shows over a single weekend, that would allow for three weekends of no speedway at times for concerned neighbours and members of the public. “It would really help us with our blue ribbon events like the super stocks, stockcars, sprint cars and midgets. “If we get the New Zealand title meeting for those events, you’re more likely to get drivers from around the country for a twonight show than trying to cram it all into a single night.” Wayne says he understands and respects the neighbours concerns over the past few seasons but he hoped this proposed consent could work for both parties. “If we come out with a consent that suits everybody, we can all move on. Our consent should have been tidied up years ago, so in hindsight the legal dealings with our neighbours have probably done us a favour. “We’ve been here 50 years and we want to keep doing what we are doing, but we are not here to annoy people.“There’s no animosity
from the club towards our neighbours, so hopefully we can get an arrangement that suits everybody.” “Hotels and restaurants etc make a lot of money from our race season and we do a lot of events for the local community as well.” The club lost their final two meetings of last season due to the onset of the Coronavirus outbreak. Wayne says he felt they were fortunate they didn’t lose more dates purely through timing. “The club is ok financially and to be honest we are just a sport so we have to go with it just like everyone else has to,” he says. “My main focus is this upcoming season and the hope that we can have our spectators back. Our gate sales are our biggest source of income,” he says. “We have a lot of really great sponsors and club memberships. Gate sales also help food vendors and that side of things as well. “We do rely on the patronage to keep us going, especially with the probability that the sponsorship dollar will be that much harder to secure in at least the near future.”

Nelson Matters
National’s new leadership team of Todd Muller and Nikki Kaye gives Nelson and New Zealand a real and serious choice about how we recover from the economic fallout from Covid-19. The hundreds of local job losses already has Nelson and Tasman topping the wrong charts. The Ministry of Social Development has unemployment benefits up 500% on last year and growing faster than other regions. Nelson’s Economic Development Agency says the fallout has just begun forecasting a loss of 4,000 local jobs in the next year. Forecasts also predict hundreds of Nelson businesses to go broke. Todd Muller’s first statement as
National’s leader shows he gets the scale of the economic challenge facing regions like Nelson saying “The election will be about the economy, but not the economy the bureaucracy talks about. It will be about the economy you live in – your job, your main street, your marae, your tourism businesses, your football club, your local butcher, your kura, your netball courts, your farms, your shops and your families.” Actions speak louder than words. Senior politicians like to take on glamorous portfolios like the Arts (Jacinda Ardern) Sports (Grant Robertson) and Tourism (John Key). That Todd Muller has chosen the Small Business portfolio shows
grit. His commitment is to support the recovery of New Zealand’s 500,000 small businesses, including 8,000 in our region. Todd’s background from a kiwifruit orcharding family also includes leadership roles in Fonterra, Zespri and the avocado industry. He gets that horticulture and exporting are so important to Nelson. His time on the Waikato University Council and as a Director of Plant and Food Research shows he is future focussed and values science. His statement that “I’m not interested in opposition for opposition’s sake” is consistent with his leadership in persuading National to support the Government’s Climate Change Commission legislation.
544 Waimea Road, Nelson
New Deputy Leader Nikki Kaye is a talented woman who will be a powerful voice for young people and our urban communities. She comfortably beat Jacinda Ardern in 2011 and 2014 for the Auckland Central Electorate. She is a genetic scientist, lawyer, accomplished athlete and recently recovered from breast cancer. She has had ministerial experience in Education, Civil Defence and ACC. National is best placed to lead Nelson and New Zealand’s economic recovery. We did it in the 1990s when unemployment soared to 10% post the 1987 crash and again in 2013s post the Global Financial Crisis, restoring jobs, growth and
prosperity. The problem for the current Government is they don’t understand business and believe big spending is the answer to every woe. They are great at bold announcements like the 100,000 Kiwibuild homes, Auckland Light Rail or a Billion Trees Programme, but have proved unable to deliver. National will be outlining our clear plans to save jobs and rebuild the economy in the coming weeks. My new role in Todd Muller’s line up is working with Amy Adams on these Covid-19 recovery policies. Our focus is on how we stem job losses, restore business confidence and get Nelson and New Zealand working again. Advt.

Changes coming for plastic recycling Starting from 1 July we’ll only be collecting plastics that can be recycled in New Zealand – these are the ones labelled with 1, 2, and 5. These three plastics are the most common, representing around 85 – 90% of the plastics we use. Most of the containers that you use will still be recycled: soft drink and water bottles, clear plastic meat trays, plastic milk bottles, bathroom, kitchen, and laundry products, and ice-cream, butter and takeaway containers. The plastics that we will not be collecting from 1 July are plastics 3, 4, 6 and 7. These plastics are used in some food and product packaging like single serve yoghurt pottles and most sour cream containers. These cannot be recycled in New Zealand and are very difficult to find an overseas market for. There is also concern that some of these plastics may not be recycled appropriately. So please start thinking about the plastics that you buy now, reduce plastic where you can, starting checking the number and aim to buy only 1, 2 and 5 ahead for the changeover date on 1 July.
Moutere Highway detour – Mission Bridge Replacement Work to replace Mission Bridge (near Davey Road, Upper Moutere) is now underway and will continue until July. The project was due to start in March but was delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Apply now for a Community Grant Do you have an exciting community project in the pipeline? A Community Grant could help to make it happen. Applications for our Tasman District Council Community Grants are now open until 31 July 2020. Funding is available for Tasman-based projects that meet a community need and have community support. Grants are available for projects that fit into the following categories: • Community and economic development initiatives • Arts/culture/heritage/museums • Festivals and events • Youth and children • Social services • Environment
Matariki youth photo competition Tasman District Council invites young people (aged 12 – 24) to submit their photographs for a contest dedicated to the Matariki Celebration. Entries are invited until 28 June. The star cluster Matariki appears in our skies in the month of Pipiri (June–July), marking the start of the Māori New Year. There are two photo categories to choose from – general Matariki or local heroes (tuahangata/tuawahine). There are $100 Prezzy Card prizes to be won in each category as well as some spot prizes too. Find out more at tasmanyouthhub.co.nz.
• Emergency services To apply and get more information, visit tasman.govt.nz/link/grants.
Good practice for outdoor burning We’ve had lots of complaints recently about smoke from outdoor burning. If you don’t have another option and must burn outdoors, please follow these steps to reduce the impact on your neighbours and the rest of the community. • Check the weather conditions, wind speed and direction and continue to check throughout the burn. Wind speeds of 10 – 25km/h are best.
Streets for people survey
• Burn well-seasoned, dry vegetation only.
The COVID-19 lockdown has shown that lower levels of air pollution, more people using active transport, greater social cohesion and less people dying on our roads are all achievable goals.
• Stack vegetation and untreated wood loosely.
Please visit the website tasman.govt.nz, search on “streets for people” and complete a short survey to tell us how the lockdown has changed your perception of streets and how you want them to look when the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Feedback is invited until 31 May 2020.
More information and nomination forms are available on the Council website, tasman.govt.nz and search “community awards.” You can email your completed nomination form to gabrielle.drummond@tasman.govt.nz. Nominations must be received by 30 June 2020.
The Moutere Highway will be closed at the bridge and a detour is in place via either Gardner Valley Road or Harley Road to the Coastal Highway. For more details, including the detour map, visit tasman.govt.nz, search phrase ‘Mission Bridge’.
• Sports and recreation facilities.
The lockdown has also challenged the idea that streets are designed for vehicles. Streets have been transformed into hubs of interaction, recreation, art and play. As we have walked, ridden and accessed spaces normally reserved for cars, should we now review how we plan these areas in future?
Tasman District Council’s Outstanding Community Service Awards recognise the unsung heroes who add so much to our communities. The awards are aimed at acknowledging those who have volunteered for 20 years or more. It’s a way to make sure they are rewarded with the thanks they deserve for their long-term commitment, generosity, dedication and outstanding service. Nominees must be residents of the Tasman District to qualify.
• In winter only burn between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm. • Do not leave a fire to smoulder overnight. • Get the fire burning hot as quickly as possible and keep it hot throughout the burn.
COUNCIL MEETINGS All meetings are being held via Zoom video conferencing. See the meeting calendar on the website for the access links. Full Council Thursday 28 May, 9.00 am. Community Grants Subcommittee Tuesday 2 June, 9.30 am. No public forum Kingsland Forest Plan – Deliberations Tuesday 2 June, 1.30 pm. No public forum Audit and Risk Committee Wednesday 3 June, 1.30 pm. Public forum Golden Bay Community Board Tuesday, 9 June 2020, 9.30 am. Golden Bay Service Centre, Commercial Street, Takaka. Please note: this meeting will take place at the Service Centre but the public forum will be via Zoom video conferencing in order to meet physical distancing requirements.
• Only burn outdoors when you really must. Check out the updated good practice guide for outdoor burning on our website, and please check if you need a fire permit at checkitsalright.nz.
