Local farmers are cleaning up following the floods this month. “We’re getting there,” says local farmer Steven Todd. “It’s a lot better than a week ago.” He says that a few who were harder hit are struggling but in general people have been able to get on and get it tidied up. Where fences are damaged it takes a bit longer. “It’s just time and effort. You can’t get it all done overnight.” Steven says the water on his place is slow, but where the river flow is faster there can be a lot of debris and removing it from fences takes time. Tapawera farmer Dion McGaveston says they had quite a bit of damage. Some fences need to be replaced while others would need straightSamand Petrie ening to have debris removed. The rain on Monday this week caused more surface flooding on his Annesbrook Plumbing & Drainage farm. The rain was heavy enough that Dion had to take his daughters Rural Ag Planner to the school bus stop on2021-22 the tractor. He says this month’s floods were the biggest he has seen. Tasman The Gowan Bridge was closed Monday due to flood damage leaving no way in or out of the valley. A com$1495.00+GST ment on the Tasman District Council website said, “Repairs are likely to take several days to complete.”

The letter advised that the NPS-IB had been delayed but encouraged councils to continue work to identify SNA. TDC Environmental Policy Manager Barry Johnson said the Council’s pause on SNA work does not affect the District’s long-standing voluntary survey programme. “Council has been working to survey land on a non-compulsory basis through the Native Habitats Tasman and wetlands programmes for years and this work is continuing,” he says. The Native Habitats Tasman programme involves willing landowners agreeing to have their property surveyed by an ecologist, who then provides a detailed report on the significance of the area and potential management options. Barry says around 70 per cent of landowners contacted by the programme take up the offer to have their land surveyed and mapped.

Highest veggie prices in four years Jo Kent The cost of tomatoes and cucumbers have sky-rocketed over the last few months with an increase of 52 per cent. As a result, the industry has faced the largest rise in vegetable prices in over four years, pushing food prices up 1.4 per cent. Prices rose 15 per cent in June, and after adjusting for seasonal effects, vegetable prices were up 8.5 per cent, says Stats NZ. The weighted average price of tomatoes and cucumbers was $11.19 and $16.79 per kilogram, respectively. And capsicums leaped 27 per cent to a weighted average price of $24.16 per kilogram, the highest ever recorded. Gavin Williams, owner of the 185 Farm Shop on Main Road Hope, says that although prices in winter are generally higher, the reason for the extreme increase is down to bad weather conditions. “In June we had weeks of frost where you get no growth because of poor light,” he says. But he says the recent downpours have really turned things around and crops are now thriving, just weeks later.

“Prices will start to drop once we are into August because we’ll see the results from all the June plantings and volume will start to increase,” he says. “The bad weather just coincided with the low season which made for a higher price increase,” he says. Stats NZ consumer prices manager Matthew Stansfield says higher freight costs for imported vegetables and the effect of Covid-19 on growers’ ability to find pickers had also contributed to the nationwide increases. He says with some vegetables, like tomatoes, decisions about the next season are made well in advance. “There was a lot of uncertainty for tomato growers last year and that has influenced how much was planted and plans for the volume of imports,” he says. But local growers in Tasman remain relatively unaffected. Marketing assistant for Connings, Katie Grimshaw, says the higher supply costs are evened out with the produce they grow themselves. “As we grow a lot of other things on site, like broccoli and cauliflower, we can balance out the

higher cost of the vegetables that we buy in.” Raewards Fresh owner Gareth Caldwell says most locals tend to buy produce seasonally, so are used to seeing higher prices for tomatoes and capsicums over winter. “This year, the price is a lot higher, but it encourages the consumer to adjust what they buy.” He says the issue is worse for local restaurants and cafes who have set menus but their wholesale costs have gone up. “That’s a real problem for them,” he says. The only fresh vegetable prices to fall in June were kumara, pumpkin, and mushrooms. Slightly offsetting the 1.4 per cent rise in food prices were kiwifruit, down 24 per cent; pork leg, down 10 per cent; and kumara, down 10 per cent. Annual food prices increased 2.8 per cent to the year ending June 2021. This was mainly influenced by higher fruit and vegetable prices (increasing 9.6 per cent) and restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food (increasing 4.4 per cent). Meat, poultry, and fish prices rose 1.0 per cent and non-alcoholic drinks prices fell 0.7 per cent.

Log Market update The At Wharf Gate (AWG) prices for export logs in July decreased an average of $8-9 per JASm3 from June prices. Congestion at Port Nelson is easing as winter slows logging production and shipping schedules get a more regular flow. Port congestion has hit critical levels in Gisborne and to a lesser extent in Tauranga and Napier. The combination of the usual drop in productivity in China during their hottest months was exacerbated by the Chinese government forcing some sawmills to relocate from Taicang, Jiangsu Province. The Indian log market is showing signs of recovery with a shortage of logs anticipated in Tuticorin. The demand for logs and sawn timber in New Zealand has not reduced during the winter period. The PF Olsen Professional Log Price Index reduced $4 from the June record ofCompany $143 to $139. The Forest Management The index is currently $16 above the two-year average, and $14 above the three and five-year averages.of Choice.

The Professional Forest Management Company of Choice. PF Olsen is the leading provider of independent professional forestry services in New Zealand.

Chief executive Rachel Taulelei says the company is “immensely proud” of the win. Established in 1998, around 200,000 cases of wine are produced at its winery in the Awatere Valley.

Transforming landscapes into wetlands Jo Kent Moutere is about to undergo a massive rural transformation in a bid to re-establish its waterways and wetlands. About 140,000 plants and trees are being planted on over 140 properties this year alone. Thanks to a $1.9 million grant from the One Billion Trees programme, the Moutere Catchment Group have secured 270,000 plants across three years. The group is made up of local volunteers and landowners whose vision is to nurture the land and replenish the ecological health of the Moutere area. Tasman Environmental Trust’s Elliot Easton is project manager for the group and says the work the locals are doing to transform the land is awesome. “These people are doing a great thing,” he says. “There’s a lot of enthusiasm and hard work that’s been going on.” The group have also secured funding from the Provincial Growth Unit for 35km of fencing, and thanks to significant contributions from landowners, have stretched that out to over 50km.

Amanda Heine at Brightwater’s Titoki Nursery says they are one of the places growing the plants destined for Moutere. Photo: Jo Kent.
