A Murchison fire bug whose arson attacks put up to $20 million worth of Glenhope property in jeopardy and prompted the callout of more than 100 firefighters has been jailed. Colin Hayball, 72, was found guilty in August of five counts of arson after lighting fires in forestry blocks near Tapawera in between February and April last year. Following his sentencing on Monday to seven years and six months jail, police praised the Waimea Rural Fire Force for its involvement in bringing a successful prosecution against him. Detective Senior Sergeant Wayne McCoy says the cooperation police received from the firefighters and the way the fires were managed was crucial to them being able to gather the evidence required to bring the matter to court. “This individual’s actions put the lives of the firefighters at risk and placed them under enormous pres-

These fires also had the potential to impact significantly on both the forestry industry in Nelson and on the wider economy.” He says police also had the full cooperation of the land owners, without which the job of bringing Colin to account would have been significantly more difficult. “The partnerships police have with these people is something we can’t underestimate the value of.” In April last year Waimea Weekly reported that police arrested the man after completing a search warrant with members of the Armed Offenders Squad. Police found automatic weapons, including an AK47 and a large amount of ammunition. This week Wayne said the firearms, ammunition and drugs found in Colin’s possession compounded his risk to the community and it was entirely appropriate that he be sent to prison.

A new initiative to drive down the number of thefts from local schools and make it easier to trace stolen items has principals smiling. Nelson primary and intermediate schools each received a “SelectaDNA” kit last Thursday to help them keep thieves out and their valuables safe. Each kit contains an invisible solution that has a DNA sequence unique to them. It can be applied to laptops and other learning equipment such as iPads and tablets – expensive technology items that schools struggle to replace. Invisible to the naked eye, if the item is stolen and then recovered at a later date, police can identify the school it belongs to. Henley School acting principal, Eric Gardner, says he welcomed the idea and was extremely grateful to BNZ who sponsored the rollout to Nelson schools. “Like any school we don’t have a huge amount of money and we work hard to provide what we do.”

Car rolls on river bank Richmond to be ‘Gigatown’? A 19 year old local man will appear in court after his 4WD rolled on the Waimea river bank on Saturday in Appleby. According to the Nelson police the driver of the vehicle turned a sharp bend before losing control and rolling the vehicle onto its roof.

He was carrying three passengers at the time but none were seriously injured. He will appear in the Nelson District Court on October 14 where he will be charged with dangerous driving and for driving with excess breath alcohol.

Forget signs pointing to Richmond, because if the mayor has his way they’ll be reading “Welcome to Gigatown”. Mayor Richard Kempthorne has his sights set on the community taking out a national competition, putting Richmond on the world map when it comes to high speed internet, economic development and innovation. If Richmond wins the competition, dubbed “Welcome to Gigatown” led by telecommunications infrastructure company Chorus, it will become the first town in the southern hemisphere to receive onegigabit per second broadband speeds – up to 100 times faster than most cities around the globe. It will be a year-long competition and is aimed at mobilising the potential that high speed internet has to transform the local economy. Richard is spearheading the campaign to have Richmond take out the title and is currently making plans for the project ahead of applications opening this month. He says the Tasman District Council will work with Richmond Unlimited on the project and he sees huge potential for high quality internet capability for the town.

Crime hits 17 year low in Tasman

Crime across the district has dropped to the lowest level since 1995. Tasman District recorded the highest crime resolution rate in New Zealand, at 56.7 per cent and also had one of the highest staff engagement levels in this year’s workplace survey. For the year July 2012 to June 2013 14,766 offences were recorded, which is a drop of more than 2000 offences from the previous year in which 16,886 crimes were recorded. Total crime has been trending downwards since 2008-2009 when it reached a high of 18,450. Commander superintendent Richard Chambers says the results gave a clear picture that the proactive preventative approach being taken by police across Tasman District was having a positive effect. “Our focus has been on reducing crime and victimisation and the hard work of staff must not be under estimated,” he says. “My team takes great pride in the work they do and I am very proud of their achievements.” In the last financial year public place assaults dropped to the lowest level in more than a decade, with 509 offences recorded. This compares with 641 recorded in the 2011-2012 year. Serious assaults resulting in injury have also declined, dropping from 442 in the 2011-2012 year to 364 in the current year. While public place and serious assaults had declined, dwelling assaults had risen to the highest level recorded since 1995, at 973 and up marginally from last year’s total of 942. The number of burglaries recorded was at the lowest level since 2007.

Poor participation in local elections has voting authorities saying people need to wake up to the importance of having their say. The Tasman District Council elections are in full swing, but only around 5000 people have cast their vote so far, according to election returns statistics. Voting papers have been out for the past week with another 35,000 Tasman residents yet to send theirs back. Just 13.97 per cent of the voting papers sent out have been returned so far, down on the 18.88 per cent at this time during the last elections. Just half of the voting papers sent out were returned in 2010, which is a figure similar to the low numbers resulting at local elections all over the country with overall turnout declining. Local Government New Zealand chief executive, Malcolm Alexander is urging people to vote and says the reasons people give for not doing so simply aren’t good enough. Research shows most who don’t vote say it is because they either don’t know enough about the candidates, had forgotten, left it too late, or they were too busy. “Once every three years you are given the democratic right to participate in selecting leaders who

will make decisions on everything from roading and transport planning, to water supplies in your area – not to mention setting the rates bill which will be sent to you every quarter to pay for these vital services. If something is important enough then people make time for it, and voting is very important. This is your opportunity to make a difference to your community.” Richmond councillor Judene Edgar says the low return rate is worrying and encourages people to get their voting papers back in. It seems ignorance is the most common reason for not voting, with 31 per cent of people surveyed saying they just don’t know enough about who is standing and being uninterested accounted for just 14 per cent. The top reasons people that do vote gave for doing so? Around 26 per cent say it is a democratic duty, 17 per cent because they want to have a say and seven per cent say because “you cannot complain if you haven’t voted”. Voting papers need to be filled in and posted in time to reach the electoral office by 12pm on Saturday October 12.

Each couple was tested on their knowledge and recall of their marriage with questions such as “what is the most romantic thing your husband has ever done for you?’ and “what is their least favourite household chore?”

Organiser Sandra Johnson of Grace Church, who hosted the event as a fundraiser for their youth group, says the event was extremely successful, with more than $1300 in donations as a result. “It was really great, everyone had a great time – the couples had the best time I think which was delightful.” Sandra says the highlight of the quiz was just how involved the crowd and the couples got and the winners Ed and Lisa were

great fun. “I think they entertained everyone the most as well as winning with their knowledge of each other.” Newly weds Kevin and Caitlin Gauntlett took out second place at the competition. Belinda, who took on the challenge with her husband Dion says the duo loved the night and would do it again in a heartbeat. “We all joked and it was heaps of fun. We were in the second group, so got to watch the first round and it was hilarious, we did not expect it to be that funny,” she says.

Locals step up to walk with new charity Local school children who spent a cold winter going without adequate footwear will soon benefit from the kindness of strangers. Walk with Us, the new local charitable trust whose mission is to provide free school and sports footwear and socks to children in need, is already garnering huge support just a few months into their project. Following discussions with local schools and teachers, the trust has eight local schools signed up to join the early pilot programme, including Victory, Richmond and Wakefield primary schools. Already local business owners and organisations have jumped

on board and shown their support, including Dave and Sandy Heywood of Stirling Sports. The duo are donating generously to the Walk with Us cause, providing a great discount once the trust is in a position to begin providing funds for footwear vouchers. The charity is currently gearing up to host their first ever fundraising event in a bid to get the ball rolling for local kids in need. Police target student drivers Students driving to school were the focus of a recent operation by Nelson Police. Police targeted Waimea College, Garin College, Nayland College, Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls, Motueka High School and Golden Bay High School before and after school. Officers were checking for compliance with the conditions of graduated drivers licences, speed, seatbelts along with warrants of fitness and registration. A total of 87 infringement notices were issued. Twelve of those were for breach-

ing the conditions of a graduated driver’s licence. Three drivers had their licences suspended and one person was caught driving while suspended and had their vehicle impounded. About 300 vehicles were checked over the one day operation. Road policing manager inspector Jenni Richardson says further operations were planned. “We are aware there are a large number of young people who routinely ignore the conditions of their graduated licence, and in some instances parents

Wednesday September 18 Anatoki Salmon Farm celebrated their grand reopening in style two weekends ago, just months after the farm was destroyed by a flash flood. While nearly 35,000 fish died or escaped and the ponds were ruined, thanks to local support the farm is back to its former glory and welcomed huge crowds attended the reopening, including a TV news crew.

Wednesday August 28 A local who told Waimea Weekly that snapper happy fishermen are too greedy will be pleased with the announcement that quota will remain unchanged for the next fishing year. Commercial fisheries who had their hearts set on an increase however, will be disappointed. The 2013 - 2014 fishing year officially starts today and Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy has announced that he will leave the snapper quota in the top of the south unchanged. The total allowable commercial catch will remain at 306 tonnes for snapper area 7, and the recreational Challenger area that includes Nelson will stay the same too. This will include keeping the sub-limit of 3 snapper that can be taken from the Marlborough Sounds as it is, with no increase to a proposed quota of 5 going ahead.

Howard River bridge: While I accept that investing a huge amount of money on this particular road may not be considered warranted for the council, I am adamant that something has to be done to make road users aware of the potential danger at the long blind bend after the Howard River Bridge. I believe the bend poses a threat to lives. There is a 30 metre drop at that point and two cars cannot pass each other. I use this road 12 times a week and encounter stock trucks, camper vans, trail bikes, hunters, gold seekers, 4x4 vehicles, often in groups, blazing down the road as if it is a highway. Recreational users of the road are obviously unaware of the blind bend. It has already cost me one written off car and one severely damaged car for which I had to front up with $500.

“This voluntary group is about more than just sitting around drinking coffee, it’s about making a difference in the community.” That’s the statement one of the Waimea Nelson Inner Wheel Club’s members, who says the newly formed group is for fun volunteers wanting to better the community they live in. “It’s for women. We’re a service organisation. What we do is raise money for the community and for community projects,” explains Sharon Martin. International Inner Wheel is the world’s largest voluntary women’s service organisation, with a world membership of 103,000 in 103 countries. New Zealand has 59 clubs. The Waimea Nelson charter is in some ways a merger of two groups, although the Nelson Inner Wheel Club has not been ac-

tive in recent times, and its current membership includes women from Atawhai to Wakefield. The Waimea Nelson Inner Wheel Club’s current project includes knitting blankets for children overseas as part of Operation Cover Up, and next on the list is wheat bags for the Nelson Hospice. Inner Wheel’s membership includes women over the age of 18 who are interested in meeting new people, working together, fundraising, listening to talks from interesting speakers and to, of course, have fun. “It’s basically a friendship thing, networking but also doing our bit in the community too.” The Inner Wheel Club of Waimea Nelson meets on the last Monday of every month. Larry’s been cutting Les’ hair for 50 years

When Richmond’s Larry Sutherland left school at 16 to be a barber his first ever client was a boot maker from the shop right next door. Last week, and 50 years on, Larry is still cutting Les Sangster’s hair. Larry says when he started at Ted Wilkes Barber Shop on the Rutherford St end of Hardy St, the barber shop was a busy place but he always remembered his first haircut. Les was in his mid-thirties and was about to buy the boot maker business he worked in off the Smith brothers. They say Nelson city was a different place back then. “There were about 50 barbers around in those days,” says Larry. “After about ten or 15 years that went down to about half a dozen because the Beatles came out in ’63 and everyone wanted long hair and they all went to women’s hairdressers.” He says the barber shop was a meeting place for men and often there would be eight or nine men waiting for a haircut on a Friday night while their wives shopped in the city. He says for men

who didn’t like to drink in the pubs, the barber shop was a place they could meet, talk and even play pool. Les says being a boot maker was a busy business 50 years ago, making and mending shoes for people all over the district. They even made all the shoes for the hospital and had to make three shoes at a time for amputees because one shoe would wear through so much quicker than the other. Les’ haircut hasn’t changed much over the decades says Larry, but the friendship has certainly developed. “We’ve talked about all sorts over the years and when I came back to being a barber 15 years ago Les was one of the first that was back in my chair. I should be able to cut his hair blindfolded by now,” he joked. Les wasn’t too keen for Larry to give it a go but says he trusts him so much he doesn’t even tell him want he wants, he just lets Larry go for it. He says he can’t imagine having another barber. “I think I’ve got him for life. If I don’t like what he does by now it’s a bit late to say so.”

Just a thought... It’s a messy life. I had just begun cycling home five weeks ago when I came to a crashing halt as my “ordered life” was skittled. A 4WD travelling in the opposite direction turned right in front of me. The injuries I sustained meant five days in hospital and I am still not back to work. Life was turned upside down and the illusion of having one’s life in order was shattered. It is an illusion because although we all have hopes, plans and dreams we are constantly buffeted by things that mess up our life and it’s order. A record number of entries made the annual Cawthron Science and Technology fair a sight to behold says Judene Edgar, secretary of the Cawthron Institue Trust board. Entries were open to students aged 6 to 17 due to the annual senior and biennual youth competitions coinciding and the fair saw a mammoth 250 entrants. The fair has been an established event on the calendar of every school in the region for almost 30 years and involves each student performing a scientific investigation

and creating a presentation board to display to both the public and four independent judges. The projects were available for public viewing daily during the past week and Judene says she was left impressed again “with the fantastic quality of the entries.” She says a standout for her was Tasman’s School project, which measured the environmental effect their annual Muddy Buddy event had. The winners of these year’s fair will be announced at the awards event on Tues- Richmond School student Isabella Prendeville at the Science Fair day October 14. at Stoke Memorial Hall last week. RATE PAYERS will subsidise water costs of dairy farmers, orchardists and others if the Lee Valley Dam is built. RATE PAYERS are deliberately being kept in the dark as to costs and funding by this council. RATE PAYERS are paying $1 in every $5 of their rates to service debt. This must stop. Only priority projects should be considered. RATE PAYERS need forthright leadership and business sense for the Council’s income of over $100 million per year. RATE PAYERS want a change in Council culture and overspending. The proposed Lee Valley Dam’s only capacity is to ﬁnancially drain our district, with further increased debt likely to be $60 million and increased RATES TO ALL RATE PAYERS in the Tasman District.

The site of the proposed dam is in an area of high earthquake risk, close to the Flaxmore - Waimea - Heslington fault and the Alpine fault. The wellbeing and safety of the people of Brightwater should not be compromised by building a dam which holds 13 million cubic metres of water in a known earthquake prone area. RATE PAYERS don’t want toxic drinking water from more intensive farming and increased irrigation and leaching with nitrates, phosphates and faecal bacteria in the river.

Seniornet celebrates 30 years In 1993 the founders of Seniornet predicted they’d be out of a job within a couple of years, as soon as the few seniors in Nelson who owned a computer learnt how to use it. Twenty years on, they’ve never been busier. “When we first started only one of the original committee had a computer,” says committee member Duncan Fuller. “Now we’ve had thousands come through our courses or become members of Seniornet and it just keeps going.” Seniornet Nelson celebrates its 20th anniversary on October 15 and over that time their main goals has been to up-skill and teach people over 50 years of age how to use their computers. They say the goal is to get people using their email, Google and able to up load photographs. From there Skype and other features like Google Maps are introduced. There are also interest groups that members can join, like those interested in learning more about Apple computers, photographs or the technical side of how a computer works. Duncan says the challenge of new technology means tutors are never standing still. When asked how the tutors stay up with the play of the latest technology, Duncan replied: “With difficulty.”

We’re just ahead of them. We just need to be a day ahead.” They say they’ve had some great stories for those who have learnt how to use a computer over the years and it’s been a great way for them to connect with family and loved ones. “Some of them get really excited when they figure it out and they squeal with delight when it makes sense to them, when the light’s come on,” says Lindsay. “I have one elderly friend with a grandchild in London and she has the same children’s book as her grandchild and reads to her via Skype, which is really great for her.” “We do regularly get comments like ‘oh, it’s so brilliant, I can now Skype my kids’ and that’s what keeps us going,” says Duncan. The group now has 616 members (as of last week) and Duncan says many of them are now independent on a computer but like the comfort of having a group that they

Local man Neville Mead has been growing vegetables for 62 years but he got one hell of a shock when harvesting his latest crop of carrots. The carrots he pulled from his garden last week were all large but one in particular measured 33cm. He says the secret was a mixture of chicken blood and bones and the type of carrot that it was. “This is the biggest one I’ve ever seen. There were a few others that were big but this was the biggest.” He says he’s given the large carrots to his friend to feed to his horses. “The big ones don’t taste very nice,” he says. Senior A Girls Basketball The Waimea College Senior Girls Basketball Team are currently competing in the National Secondary Schools tournament in Palmerston North which sees the top 24 teams from throughout the country meeting to battle it out on the court. The Waimea team have had a great season so far, competing in the local women’s league which has seen them playing some challenging matches against the best of Nelson’s basketball talent. The South Island qualifying tournament was held in Nelson in early September and saw the girls finish ninth. They had a tough draw in pool play and after intense matches and a win against eventual semifinalists Ashburton College they met Cashmere College in a must-win game. It was a torrid match with over 40

fouls called but Cashmere won by 2 points, meaning Waimea narrowly missed out on qualification for the national tournament.

However, due to the withdrawal of another team, Waimea were offered the chance to attend and they grabbed it with both hands!

Waimea College basketball teams are fortunate to have an outstanding team of coaches available to them, ensuring that their players receive support and skills from only the best. This team will travel to Nationals with Head Coach Kat Jones, and assistant coaches Jodi Hikuroa and Ed Book providing inspiration and mentoring that is second to none.

Head coach Kat Jones says that the girls will be competitive at national level and have already proven they can compete against the more experienced, battlehardened North Island teams, having played their first pool play game and only losing by 3 to heavily favoured St Peter’s Cambridge. Their draw in pool play doesn’t get any easier with games against last year’s Secondary School Champs, Hamilton Girls, and the top

Recognising the healing power of contact with animals, the Nelson Ark delivers educational, rehabilitative programmes to youth at risk of losing their way. Paired with rescued, unwanted and abused dogs, the youth complete a programme that every step of the way slowly heals their heart, as well as their canine companion. Co-founder Karen Howieson says the success of the APART programme is hugely rewarding and the highlight over the years has been watching the change in each young person who completes it. “It is actually really nice to reflect. Seeing the way it has changed the lives of these young people and the dogs involved is incredible.” To date 95 at risk youth have completed the course alongside 95 dogs. The dogs are trained in readiness for a forever home by Sue Walsh and Jo Turton, assistant dog trainer and co-facilitator ‘Healing Species’ - a proven and effective programme based on compassion and empathy. The end of this month will see another Nelson ARK graduation, where each of the currently participating youth will receive their accolades for completing APART. Their canines will each be adopted out to a loving, caring home. Up until a year ago the trust had no formal home, making achieving their big dreams for the organisation tough. But 12 months ago Suzanne and Laurence Max, the owners of Stonehurst Farm offered the perfect setting. Spacious, rural and fitting with their vision to eventually rehabilitate different animals and introduce them to the APART programme, it was the perfect solution. The South Island Masters Games is back in Nelson and the fun kicks off this Saturday. This is a highly anticipated annual festival of sport and sports clubs from all over the region are proud to be hosting it once more. Running for nine days straight, it is a chance for athletes at all levels and abilities to compete in more than 50 different sports. Most sports have both competitive and social grades so you don't have to be a top performer or even a current competitor to enter. There are no qualification criteria - athletes don’t need to be nominated or to represent a club. Anyone can enter – as long as they are old enough. Most sports take entries from age 30 or 35 and upwards. More than 2000 sportspeople have entered into this year’s event, and half of those are from outside the Nelson region. This will be the second time Nelson has hosted the popular games and just two years ago close to 3000 athletes competed, making it one of the biggest sporting events in the country. New for this year is the Masters Games Village marquee. The organisers have taken previous feedback on board and this year all social functions will be held at the Games Village at Saxton Field. Besides the sporting activities, which usually take place during the day, you'll get an unforgettable party atmosphere. The social programme will cater for all tastes with themed entertainment nights featuring live perfor-

Nelson South swim squad makes history

On the back of a hugely successful winter swimming season, the Nelson South Swimming Club is sending its largest team to the Short Course National Swimming Championships being held in Wellington this week. Twelve swimmers from Nelson South have qualified to swim at the prestigious swimming event which marks the end of the national winter swimming calendar. This is the largest squad the club has ever sent to a national event and makes up more than half of the Nelson Marlborough representative team. Many of the country’s elite swimmers will be representing their clubs during the five day event. The Nelson South team comprises a squad of dedicated teenagers who have been training and competing hard throughout the winter months, and many have high hopes for the event. Ellie Rukuwai, 15, who has been swimming at a national level since the age of

10 hopes to medal in her specialist breaststroke and medley events. Pip Dwyer, 15, has qualified for eight events and is an up and coming middle distance freestyler. She is ranked second for the 200m free and third for 400m free so is a strong medal contender for these events. Both Ellie and Pip have also been honoured by being selected to represent the Southern Zone in the NZ Interzonal Competition being held after the National Short Course meet. The duo will be joined by Sam McKenzie of the Nelson Swimming Club at that event. Sam Trevurza, 14, is hoping for a repeat performance of last year when she won a bronze in the 50m backstroke event, Clara Foster, 14, finished fourth in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events at the Long Course Nationals earlier in the year and is aiming to finish on the po-

dium, Amy Coulton, 15, is a long distance specialist who finished fifth in the 800m at Long Course this year and has also qualified for the 200m and 400m freestyle events, Bailee Spriggs, 15 and Luke Kelly, 16 will both be swimming at their first top tier National event and are excited to have the opportunity to swim with the best in their age groups. Also of particular note are the Neill siblings, Fraser, Eddie and Libby, all three of whom will be swimming at this event. Fraser, 17, has qualified for nine events and will be concentrating on 200m free-

style. This is also his last national meet before heading to University. Eddie, 16, is aiming for top ten placings in four of his nine events, the 400m and 200m medley as well as the 400m and 1500m freestyle. Libby, 14, will be joining her brothers in what is her first top level national event. Georgie Trengrove, at 13 years old, is the club’s youngest qualifier, but due to prior commitments is unable to make the meet while Grace Woodall, the oldest squad member in her last year as an age group swimmer, has an illness that has kept her out of the pool.

Gridiron comp comes to town Mark Rais isn’t here to convert. In fact, he will happily admit that he loves rugby too. But his grand plan is to get Nelson youth into his favourite sport – American football. Often regarded as a physical, brutal sport – just look at the protection they wear – Mark is bringing the Junior Rippa Gridiron League to Saxton Field, bypassing the high contact from where it gets its reputation. “This is just like rippa rugby,” Mark, the competition’s head coach explains. “There’s no physical tackling. You use the belts and pull off the flag which indicates the person is down.” While most winter sports have now concluded, Mark believes it is the perfect time to start the competition, as it will give youth a chance to keep active and involved in sport

at a time they might be resting instead. “I love rugby and I’ve got my kids involved in other sports too. But we want to make sure kids are doing sport all year round and this just happens to fit perfectly with that. JRGL is dedicated to helping the youth.” As well as keeping kids active, Mark’s second goal is to introduce the sport to Nelsonians and he hopes to see adults play one day. The league starts on October 18 with registration on October 4 for boys and girls between the ages of 9-16. The cost is $20 for the season and the games will be played on Fridays at 4pm. Practices will be on Wednesdays at 4pm. All games will be played and registration completed at the gridiron field across from the Saxton Hockey Turf.

Makos odds on for Blenheim semi If the Tasman Makos beat Waikato tonight, the chances of hosting an ITM Cup Championship semi final will be all but sealed. The only problem is a potential semi final will be held in Blenheim, meaning the only way Nelson fans will see another Makos match at Trafalgar Park beyond this Wednesday’s fixture is if they can ensure a home final – but even that is becoming a real possibility. The Makos have been playing so well this season that they are on top of the ITM Cup Championship standings by two points and still have one more game in hand. They are also the bookie’s favourites to win the competition, the TAB has them at $2.25 with Southland and Otago back on $5. Winnable games against Taranaki in New Plymouth and Manawatu in Blenheim then follow, and there’s no reason to suggest Tasman can’t win all three, which would be a huge confidence booster going into a playoff series against teams they had already beaten. The other teams gunning for a semi final spot are Hawke’s Bay (20 points), Southland (20 points), Otago (16 points with a game in hand), and Manawatu (10 points.) Hawke’s Bay and Southland play on Thursday night while the Magpies end the regular season against top of the Premiership Wellington. Southland, on the other hand, face an in-form Counties Manakau when they contest the Ranfurly Shield. Otago, whose average season could be hidden by a short Shield stint, still have three games to play but their inconsistency means matches against the far north trio of North Harbour, Northland and Auckland are no guarantees and it wouldn’t be surprising to see them back up here in a few week’s come semi finals time. Tonight’s game kicks off at Trafalgar Park from 7:35pm.

Saxton Stadium to re-open after flood Saxton Stadium will re-open this Friday, almost six months after parts of it were destroyed by floods. The $12 million indoor sports stadium was officially opened in 2009 but suffered major flood damage in April this year, including to its specially-made 3800 square metre hardwood floor. The offices in Sports House, that house many of the region’s sports administrators and Sport Tasman, were also damaged, forcing staff out of the building until mid-September. The stadium will be re-opened by Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio after a new $500,000 floor was flown in from Denmark and re-laid. The open-

ing is just in time for the South Island Masters Games that will be hosting its registration in the stadium the day after the opening and using the facility over the following week. Nelson City Council says the flooding is unlikely to happen again as it was a “one in 500 year event” but it has completed some remedial work to Orphanage Creek to minimise overflow into the stadium area, just in case. The entire cost of the rebuild – minus the $10,000 excess – was covered by insurance. Aldo says having the stadium open again is great news for the region, after a winter where several sports had to move venues. The stadium was the biggest building affected by the April floods but many other homes and businesses were also damaged. An estimated cost of the entire clean-up has run into the millions.

Two decades of trail running was celebrated in style in Saturday’s 20th Anniversary Abel Tasman Coastal Classic. The day could not have been better, capturing the complete essence and the words inscribed into the event’s banner, “The Sea, The Sky, The Sand, The Run”. What started back in 1994 was to be repeated but this time in the opposite direction, Totaranui to Marahau, and with it the Awaroa Estuary crossing at the beginning. Up the Bay to the start was a smooth boat ride, and from there it was “only” 40km along the countries most popular coastal track back to Marahau to the finish. U18 reps chase South Island supremacy Nelson Bays under-18 backs coach Shawn Begg is almost spoilt for choice. With a stack of attacking talent at his disposal, trying to fit the best players into a starting XV has forced some out of position just so they can get on the paddock. But he’s certainly not complaining – the team is currently on a three game winning streak ahead of the South Island under-18 playoffs in Christchurch this week. Having cruised past Canterbury Country and Marlborough, Nelson Bays edged Canterbury Metro 17-12 at Jubilee Park on Saturday to seal top seed for the Northern pool. The result means Nelson Bays will

now play Otago in the quarter finals on Thursday, after they slumped to third place in their Southern pool. With a backline featuring New Zealand Schools Barbarian players Fletcher Matthews and Finn HartStrawbridge, plus the addition of Nelson College star Mitchell Hunt, there is plenty of attacking flair in the side captained by Ethan Blackadder. “I’m really excited and I think we’ll do pretty well,” says Shawn. “We’ve definitely got the potential to win this and we showed by beating Canterbury that we’ve got a good chance.” Shawn believed the team’s main strength was the amount of strong ball carriers it had.

Further Notice of Election

Summary of Information The Tasman District Council Consolidated Bylaw – Chapter 7 – Traffic Control Bylaw 2005 into force in 30 June 2005. Since that date the bylaw has been amended a number of times but a full review was never undertaken. The Local Government Act 2002 requires that a review of a bylaw and Section 156 applies requires a Special Consultative Procedure. The purpose of the Traffic Control Bylaw review is to allow the existing bylaw to remain in place while a more extensive review is completed in 2014; and to ensure that the enforcement of existing restrictions and the proposed additions is not affected. The addition to the bylaw is: Mapua Wharf Precinct – closed to vehicles for parking from 20 December to 7 February inclusive on an annual basis. Mapua Wharf Precinct – closed to vehicles for parking every Sunday. Mapua Wharf Precinct – closed to vehicles for parking every public holiday. The only exceptions to this addition are goods service vehicles and vehicles picking up or dropping their boats from the boat ramp. The purpose of this addition is for Tasman District Council to provide a pedestrian friendly environment during the busy tourist season and on Sundays when pedestrian and cycle traffic on the wharf precinct are high. At other times of the year, the wharf precinct is available for vehicle parking. The full Statement of Proposal is available for viewing during normal Council hours at the Council’s Richmond office and its Service Centres and libraries. The Statement of Proposal is also available on the Council website at www.tasman.govt.nz along with details on how to make a submission. Submissions should be received by 4.30pm on Monday 28 October 2013.

Nominations have now closed for the 2013 triennial local authority elections. Where elections are required they will be conducted by postal voting. Voting documents were sent out to electors on the roll between 20 and 25 September 2013. Voting opened on Friday 20 September 2013 and will close at 12 noon on Saturday 12 October 2013.

Nominations for Waimea Plains Freshwater and Land Advisory Group Do you want to be involved in decision making for water quality management in the Waimea Plains? The Council is setting up an advisory group to enable greater involvement by the community and stakeholders in developing the water quality management provisions for Waimea water resources. Nominations for membership on the advisory group are being invited from people with a significant interest in water management in the Plains. The ten member advisory group will be made up of councillor and iwi representatives and eight members of the community. The purpose of the group will be to consider the existing and potential future water quality challenges in the Waimea Plains and develop solutions for managing the water quality effects of land use activities. Any recommendations from the advisory group will contribute to further development of policy and rules in the Tasman Resource Management Plan. The Council’s Environment and Planning Committee will select the Advisory Group members from the nominations received. A person seeking membership can be self-nominated or nominated by another person or organisation, however members will be appointed as individuals, not as organisation representatives. As part of the Tasman Nelson Environment Awards, the Tasman District and Nelson City Councils are sponsoring a $200 cash reward for an individual secondary school student who has been nominated by their peers or teachers for showing exceptional leadership in Environmental Advocacy. Examples of the change they may have affected: • a demonstrated shift in people’s values, knowledge or behaviour related to an environmental issue • the formation or coordination of an environmental action focused group • the initiation or project management of a project to address an environmental issue • initiating or taking advantage of an opportunity to promote environmental considerations to decision makers • acting as a regional spokesperson or representative in a national environmental advocacy forum.
