Phillip Rollo The hunt is still on for a Brightwater thief after police interviewed and cleared a 16 year-old of the crime. Police have received more than 20 reports of car thefts from residents in the Brightwater area within the past two and a half months. One of the victims, Bevan Muollo, who had his car broken in to seven times, set up a game hunting camera and snapped the alleged thief in action. Since putting numerous posters around the township of the alleged thief, Bevan was tipped off by a local worker who believed he knew the person in the photo. Bevan called the police, who said they couldn’t do anything until Tuesday, due to the long weekend. So he visited the alleged thief ’s parents, who Bevan says were unsure if it was him because the clarity of the photo The alleged wasn’t that great. “Someone had given me Brightwater thief.

Lauren Hammond danced her way through to the top six in New Zealand, at the ILT National Young Performer Awards in Invercargill last week. The 16 year-old Waimea College student was surprised by her outstanding results in the modern dance section, and was originally only hoping to make it through to the top 12 of the competition. “It was so good, I was so happy. It was one of my best achievements,” says Lauren. The dance was choreographed by Trudy Fargher of Fargher Academy of Dance. Trudy says the result was only the second time someone from Nelson has reached the final of the national competition, which is only held once every two years. The age group for the competition was 15-21 year-olds, meaning at the tender age of 16, Lauren was one of the youngest to dancers make it through to the final round. Both males and females were also competing together, but while Lauren says the males are generally stronger, there is not much of an advantage either way. Each competitor performed in three classes during the preliminary round; modern/ jazz, contemporary and a master class. Despite her sister’s glandular fever, Lauren says the top six finish was even better because she did better than her sister Abby, 18, who was also competing. “Yeah definitely,” she laughed. Dancers gained qualification to the competition after winning their regionals. Lauren and Abby were the only dancers from the Nelson/Tasman region. Blokart business sails into town Richmond is set to get the world’s first standardised Blokart track after residents around Richmond Park approved it last week. Murray and Allison Shaw are now just waiting for council consent and hope to have it operational by Christmas. Blokarts are land-based buggies with sails, using wind for speed. The proposed track has been designed by the founders of Blokart, Matt and Paul Becket. Murray says the track will be the first of its kind in the world to be built to a new standard, as the sport looks to grow and standardise facilities around the world for competition, much like an Olympic sized swimming pool. “We are setting up at the estuary
end of Richmond Park and it’s going to have maximum wind. We have done a lot of research and that is the best spot in the whole region,” says Murray. “The council have a wind-meter right next to the proposed site and have five years worth of data to back it up.” Experts can harness the wind to power up to 60 kph across beaches and parks, although it is the size and speed which has restricted their use around the region,” he added. “The places you can use to Blokart now are quite restrictive with pedestrians and dogs, so the best thing for us to do was make a purpose built venue so everyone can have a go.” The Shaw’s are awaiting resource con-

Bevan says the reason he wants the thief caught is to get his life back on track, not to criticise or to judge him. “I have a lot of time for youth. If you don’t get them while he’s young, what sort of guy is he going to turn out to be?”

Life of Wakefield teacher immortalised by post cards Phillip Rollo A glimpse of a 19th century Wakefield school teacher’s life has been re-lived through multiple post cards dating back to 1906. Local historian John Dearing has pieced together a series of post cards sent to and from Annie Jessop between 1906 and 1909 and it’s all on display at the Richmond Library. John was always a stamp collector when he was a child, but he admits that passion got “out of control.” He sold his stamps and started collecting postal history. When he moved to the Tasman just eight years ago, he fell in love with the region’s history and began searching for local postmarks, most of them from places no one in today’s time has ever heard of; including Allington Island in Brightwater and Awa in Dovedale. John says he has a rule to buying a post card; it must have a post mark, a local picture and a message. Then it’s his. His collection and interest in Annie Jessop occurred after buying a pile of post cards from an antique store in Richmond. Sorting through them at a desk at home, he noticed they were all addressed to and from the same person; Annie Jessop. “In the end it went up to 55 cards. I found them in Blenheim, all over the top of the south. Because Annie would have been a post card collector as well, she would save them all, from 100 hundred years ago.” Post cards were the olden days version of text
messaging, says John. So the messages didn’t always have much detail to them. But when pieced together over a number of years, John was able to find out key information about the woman. Annie was born in Hope and taught at Wakefield School, and John quickly found out that she was very popular with the local men. Romance even occurs with one man, Ben Stratford. “You can tell by the way that they wrote together that they were going to get married. I started thinking that she’s going to marry him, but when?” The post cards all stopped after 1909 because they got married. Annie had to leave her job at the school because in those days women in public service or government employment had to be a housewife after marriage. In an incredible moment, one day John was walking through Richmond Cemetery and saw the grave titled Annie Jessop next to Ben Stratford. “I was knocked over. I just walked over and seen Ben and Annie. It was quite a moment.” John, who is also vice president of the Waimea South Historical Society, says the story will immortalise the life of the forgotten school teacher. “She was a totally anonymous person. She has disappeared off the map. Yet now, she will live forever.” John says nearby family only knew of her as a LIFE IN A POST CARD: Historian John Dearing will display the life of Wakegreat aunt. Who is the region’s top team? From doctors to roofers, from mates to collegues, the 2012 Bowater Motor Group Top Team will put them all to the test and only one will be crowned the region’s top team. Based on the popular television show Top Town, the local version is now in its third year. The fun event pits teams against each other in a series of challenges, mainly physical, but organiser Hayden Bryant, of Sport Tasman, says that doesn’t nessersary favour athletes. “Because the activities are things people only do at this event they aren’t trained for it so the average

The adult classes features a range of work teams, friends getting together and sports teams. Police target cellphone drivers in blitz Tasman drivers are getting worse at leaving their cellphone alone with figures released by police showing an increase in the amount of drivers caught using their cellphones from the year before. And police say they plan to target those drivers and people not wearing their seatbelt in a new campaign. The blitz is timed to coincide with the two year anniversary of the introduction of legislation banning mobile phone use while driving. The campaign is timed to remind drivers of the need to remain vigilant and not to slip back into the old habit of talking or
texting on cellphones while driving. The latest police figures show that drivers in most parts of New Zealand have changed their behaviour over the last two years, however, in Tasman Police District, which includes Marlborough, Nelson Bays and the West Coast, the number of drivers caught using cellphones has increased. From November 2009 until September 2010, offence notices were issued to 223 drivers in this district. In the current year, from November 2010 until September 2011, 269 offences have been detected. Off to see the Globe It was probably the most important six lines of her life. Whether she knew it at the time is another story. Hannah Lineham, 17, along with Tina Yun, 18, will be flying their way to London in June following the SGCNZ National Shakespeare Schools Production. Hannah, of Waimea College, and Tina, of Garin College, were originally chosen out of 5600 competitiors to perform in Wellington. Hannah’s performance only had six lines, but she says they were very important, after securing her seat to London. The pair were amongst 24 secondary students chosen to perform at the Globe Theatre in London, where they will engange in Shakespearen plays and get tutored by some of Britian’s biggest talents.

was disappointing. “If we are continuing to catch more drivers using cellphones you’d have to draw the conclusion that drivers in this district haven’t taken the message seriously. People need to be aware that the legislation was introduced for their safety. Two years down the track there really is no excuse for failing to comply and police will be taking a very firm line,” Stu says. Although the rules allow the use of handsfree mobile phones, police recommended that drivers minimise the potential for distraction by switching phones off while driving, or pulling over to make or receive calls.
It is only legal to use a mobile phone to make, receive or end a call when driving if: the driver does not have to hold or manipulate the phone to do so (i.e. phone is completely voice activated), or the mobile phone is securely mounted to the vehicle and the driver manipulates the phone infrequently and briefly. The rule does not allow drivers to create, send, or read text messages under any circumstances. Police will also be checking to ensure all vehicle occupants are wearing safety belts. “These are two very simple things we can all do to make our journeys safer,” says Stu.

Richmond man leads Rena oil clean up team A Richmond engineer has been leading the way for the Rena oil spill, organising clean up teams along some of the most affected beaches. A month ago the Rena container ship hit the Astrolabe reef in the Bay of Plenty, it has continued to leak oil since, which has washed up on the Bay’s beaches. The disaster has had national attention since day one and Tasman District Council engineer Dugald Ley says it was a huge learning experience being involved. Dugald, along with TDC colleagues Gra-
ham Caradus and Jeremy Butler, were dispatched to the area to help with the clean up process. Dugald was in charge of coordinating a clean-up of one of the worst affected beaches – Papamoa. How does double glazing work
The two sheets of glass are line bonded by computer control to precise tolerances with a special dual seal around an aluminium spacer. Individual windows up to 3.15 by 2.4 metres can be produced.

Stay warm without condensation As a building’s interior is warmed, there is an increased prospect of condensation, mould and mildew. Condensation forms when warm air containing moisture meets a cold window surface. If the conditions are right “dew point”

Nothing can completely eliminate condensation but ThermaTech double glazing comes close. I am sitting out on the back deck with the sun shining and everything around blossoming and so blooming lovely, that I really do not know where to start!! One of my favourite trees is one of the many varieties of the Japanese flowering cherry, Prunus “Shimidsu-zakura”. There are many of these in and around Nelson and all are looking great at present. This and “Shirotae – Mt Fuji” are two of my special picks as they both have a growth habit suited to the smaller garden. They have a lovely spreading habit and create an ideal shade area for the summer. They also have vibrant autumn colour so are a double delight in the garden. We put a couple of lounge seats out under this one in the summer and solve the problems of the world with a few G & T’s – works a treat!! I have under-planted my one with euphorbia “polychroma’ and hosta “gold standard” and these colours and textures seem to blend well. The bright lime green provides a stunning contrast to the delicate pink and white blooms of the cherry. Some of the many plants that I use as contrast or for providing ground covering under shady areas such as under trees or large shrubs etc are as follows: Hostas – many varieties now available. Heucheras – Beautiful colours from purples into lime greens and autumnal tones. Tiarellas – lovely contrasting foliage and white/cream flowers spikes. Pulmonarias – many varieties and colour in these also, from cream/green to silver. Brunneria – This perennial forget-me-not provides an excellent ground cover – not too invasive with a lovely heart shaped leaf and the Brunnera “Jack Frost” is especially lovely with its silver foliage standing out in a shaded spot, gives dark corners a real lift.These are only a few but I will talk at another time about shade areas and planting ideas but these should give you a good start.

ago and called it Garden Galore. It is now available in many forms and all seem to work just as well. It makes such a difference to the structure of the soil – seems to lighten it up as well as adding nitrogen. I use Dolomite lime as opposed to ordinary garden lime as Dolomite has added magnesium which assists the plants to take up the nutrients they need. Mix all this together with the hoe, even out a bit and you are ready to plant. If you have a small garden area, as I do, it is good to rotate your crops. This year beans will be where tomatoes were, silverbeet and green crops where beans were and so on. Only thing left to do now is to plant tomato seedlings (but I will give them a couple of weeks yet to strengthen up), stand back and admire your work and watch them grow. The garden centres have an excellent range of vege plants available and also have a good range of annuals for flowering colour. So no excuses, get out those new garden gloves, pots and containers and colour your world!

Ann from Stoke has asked what she can do to keep the snails and slugs off her emerging Hosta’s and vege plants? Blitzem and Baysol are two products which have been around for some time and both are effective but must be used with care. They can, I believe, kill cats and hedgehogs if ingested, although both do have an additive which should make them unpalatable to inquisitive pets and other wildlife. The best way to use these is to make a bait station using an old soft drink bottle. Cut it in half and make a hole in the side big enough for the snail to go through (remember his house has to fit as well!) Place the pellets in a heap and push the bottle down to secure it in place. This will let the snails in and keep cats etc out and also stop the rain from wetting the pellets. Quash is a very good and much more environmentally friendly bait and the one I would normally recommend when asked. Crushed egg shells is another method – scatter these around the base or along the rows of plants to be protected. Also wool products work as well. They stick to the foot of the snails and slugs so they avoid the area. Another one I have heard of but never tried is leaving saucers of stale beer out near the plants you want to protect. Being married to an Australian, stale beer is never available! Apparently they are attracted to the yeast in the beer, fall in to the container and drown – not a bad way to go…

The award is regarded as the highest international accolade for body engineering, and the winner is decided after evaluation over a three day period by the EuroCarBody Board, as well as the entire international expert audience of 500 conference delegates. “This is the first time Hyundai has entered the awards, and as a result, Hyundai also became the first Asian car manufacturer to be awarded the top prize,” says Hyundai New Zealand’s Chief Operating Officer, Tom Ruddenklau. “And with the all-new Hyundai i40 Wagon due to launch here in late January 2012, New Zealanders will be able to see for themselves what so impressed this international peer group of automotive engineers and designers.” Hosted by Automotive Circle International, an organization consisting of top automotive suppliers and manufacturers, the judges praised the advanced engineering and effective use of materials, as well as the production efficiency of the i40 Wagon, which scored 37.98 out of a maximum 50 points. The closest competitor and second-placed car, the Audi A6, scored 35.86, with the Mercedes B-Class in third place achieving 34.66. A total of nine of Europe and Japan’s largest automotive manufacturers competed for the award. The all-new i40 Wagon was designed and engineered in Europe, and uses high strength steel and improved joins in its structure. This means the i40 Wagon’s lightweight body has high energy absorption efficiency which increases safety for occupants in the event of an accident. The Hyundai i40 Wagon recently achieved a maximum 5* ANCAP safety rating and is in the lowest insurance grouping for a mid-segment car in the UK, thanks to its innovative body structure. “To have been given this endorsement by the world’s top automotive engineering experts, and to be benchmarked as the market leader for design is a fantastic achievement for the Hyundai brand.”

WINDOW ON WAKEFIELD Wakefield Community Council Report The Wakefield Community Council is a ratepayer group which has the ear of the Tasman District Council, as local council representatives attend our meetings which are held at the Worship Centre, Edward St, 7.30pm second Tuesday of each month. All are welcome to bring items for consideration in regards to our Village to these meetings, and we encourage you to do so. At our last meeting we discussed: the appointment of a new CEO by the TDC, the problems of two narrow culverts over the hill on Edward Street, as well as the lack of a white line and footpath on the Church corner – and how safe this might be for the cycleway, or not! The local police officers throughout the Tasman district do a great job throughout the community, and here at the Waimea Weekly we’d like to help its residents look after those who look after us. There has been a recent restructuring of the police forces in the Nelson Bays area at the beginning of the year. Jenni Richardson is the acting area commander, a position previously held by Brian Mcgurk, and in this role she oversees the forces throughout the district. Five Senior Sergeants then take charge of more specific roles; John Price is the Operations
Urban Manager, Grant Andrews takes care of Operations Rural, Dave Gibson is the Tactical Coordinator, Stu Koefoed is the Risk Manager and Wayne McCoy is in charge of the Criminal Intelligence Bureau. They work together to ensure the community is looked after and the local officers can attend to all matters with the right level of response. In the Waimea region there are three police stations. Richmond station is located on Queen Street and has a 24 hour, 7 day-a-week staff. Wakefield station controls the area from Brightwater through to Korere

Straight, and Murchison covers the rural areas from the Korere Straight to Rainbow Mountain. These stations all work in close contact with each other as well as the Nelson station, to provide the best policing for the Tasman district. All are staffed with experienced and professional officers who know their area, and know what to look for and expect. Sergeant Craig Barker is the officer in charge of Richmond station as well as the staff in Wakefield and Murchison stations. He says that the main crimes through Murchison are poaching of animals as well as theft, mostly of diesel and scrap metal. He encourages people to let the police know if they see anything out of the ordinary; “people in rural areas know who belong, they know if somebody belongs on their road. What they need to do is just be more proactive in saying, ‘hey look, that person doesn’t belong’. If you think something is suspicious, it probably is”. Letting the police know if something is out of the ordinary can often help prevent a crime from happening, or provide vital clues, such as a license plate number or a description of a vehicle

He might have ended the night without a bonnet and just two wheels but Craig Boote certainly left his mark on the track, as he returned to the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway fulltime. The three-time New Zealand Champion took out heat two, following a fourth place in the opening race, before tangling with Ian Clayworth in the final race of the night. Craig says he was a little overawed by the car’s power, but is confident his fourth New Zealand title is well within his grasp. After all, Huntly – where the New Zealand Super Stock Championship is being held – is where “The Boss” claimed his second national title. But getting past current 1NZ Dale Ewers may be easier said
than done, according to Craig, who rates Nelson’s current crop of Super Stock drivers as the best in the country. “Once Dale gets past you or he’s in front of you, he’s just about near-impossible to catch. I’ve studied Dale’s driving and he’s far smoother and less aggressive than I am,” he says. “The pace in Nelson is the fastest in the country. If you can win, by no matter what margin, in Nelson, then you can win on any track in New Zealand.” Craig has only done 23 laps of Nelson’s Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway, but he has got plenty of time to get used to it before he tackles his second goal – winning the 2013 New Zealand Super Stock Championship in Nelson, with 1NZ on his body.

Kelsey’s ready to stick it to the Aussies Phillip Rollo Already compared to by her coach as the next Anita Punt due to her blinding speed, Kelsey Smith will make her next similarity when she competes for her country in December. The 17 year-old Waimea College student was selected for the New Zealand Turf Tigers Academy squad, officially the New Zealand Under-18 hockey team. And Waimea College first XI coach Ross Birchfield says her exact playing style reminds him of current New Zealand international Anita, a former Waimea prodigy. “They’re rating her [Anita] as one of the fastest international hockey players in the world and Kelsey is in that mould. That’s what Anita was six, seven years ago; just playing for the college, showing a lot of speed and then just developing this game.”
Ross says Kelsey’s development has increased dramatically since the side was promoted into the local first division. “Competing against the best players in Nelson has improved her hockey skills no end,” he says. “She always had the amazing speed, now she’s sort of got the skill and the vision and all the things that go with the speed.” Kelsey says she was speechless when she got the news she had made the final 20-woman squad for the five match series against Australia in Canberra. She says she will spend the next couple of months working on her fitness, enabling an easier step up to the speed that comes with international hockey. “There’s going to be tonnes of fitness and tonnes of skill sessions. I just want to get more experience and see what it’s like playing at a level like that.”

Boxers claim gold They went to the national championship looking for gold, and they came back with exactly that. Fighting Fit Gym’s Gage Brown and Jordan Bowen, both 17, are the country’s top youth fighters for their weight division. Gage is now the first defending champion for Fighting Fit, after claiming the lightweight title, while Jordan took home the light heavyweight title. Coach Steve Mitchell says it’s “pretty cool”
having two national champions in the gym, but a self confessed harsh critic he admits he was still grumpy even after their gold medal wins. “I think they’d both admit they didn’t perform to their ultimate, but at the same time it’s great recognition for the hard work they’ve done in the gym. They both deserve it,” he says. Jordan improved on last year’s second place. Gage also received the accolade for best scientific fighter in the youth division.

Totaradale gets revenge After three years of dominance, Tasman’s grip on the Ryder Trophy is finally relinquished. Last weekend the annual two day tournament was contested between Totaradale and Tasman Golf Clubs. The aim of the weekend is to have a keenly contested competition, as well as developing a great social occasion between the two clubs. This year, fourty of the best golfers from the two clubs participated. Totaradale hosted Saturday’s play with the format being Canadian foursomes played in the morning, followed by the fourball
during the afternoon. Home course advantage prevailed in the morning round with Totaradale ahead by 7-3 at lunch. They strengthen their lead to be ahead 14-6 at the commencement of the first day’s play. The tournament then moved to Tasman’s course on Sunday for the singles match play, which again Totaradale won 11-9. Which made Totaradale the overall winners 25-15. Within the victorious team Bill Vercoe, Steve Cox and Murray Newport won all their three matches during the tournament.

Once upon a time there was a village within a village…. Its name was Oakwoods. Which was rather fitting when you saw the wide open spaces and beautiful trees that lined the lovely streets. Over the fence were dark green fields filled with mooing cows and off in the distance rose snowy peaks that seemed to go on forever. It’s no wonder the friendly Oakwoods folk were always full of smiles. But that’s what life was like here. It was a happy place where everyone had jolly good fun. Sometimes they’d get
together for delicious morning teas, other times they’d meet up for drinks and dance around. Every so often they’d organise something a little more adventurous – like climbing aboard a bus and heading out of town for a fine old time. Wherever they went, it was always nice to come back to the village within the village. The end? No, this was just the beginning….

Athletics season begins with a bang
The Athletics Nelson Twilight Series began with a bang and ended with a flurry of top season-opening performances. Two of the Tasman’s premier athletes have already stamped their mark on the 2011/12 season and against the biggest number of competitors the sport has seen in years, at Saxton Oval on Friday night. Waimea College long jumper Brendon Barnett leaped out to 7.01m, his biggest opening season distance. Brendon says the focus now will be consistently jumping over the seven meter barrier, something he has struggled to do in his young career. “It’s pretty promising considering my jumps at the start of last season were about 6.20m,” he says. His jump was despite only training a small portion in the past weeks. “It’s probably the work I’ve been doing in the gym. I’m running a lot quicker than what I was last season and now I’ve got that strength to handle it off the board.”
Former Garin College student Craig Lautenslager out-sprinted early pace setter Cameron Murdoch, to finish the 1000m in 2min 34.99 seconds, a time that shaved 14 seconds off his previous time from the start of last season. His focus this season is putting in strong performances to attract interest from US colleges, and his sprint finish was encouraging, he says. “I got a big kick which I haven’t had for a long time.” Despite his strong start in the 1000m, Craig will be focussing on the 3000m and 5000m throughout the season. Other highlights on the night came from New Zealand’s fastest man over 200m and 400m, Alex Jordan. Alex blitzed the field in the 100m and 200m winning with times of 10.88 seconds and 21.46 seconds, both just fractions of his personal bests and again easily his fastest season opening performances. The next Twilight Series meet will be held at Saxton Oval this Friday night at 6pm.

Draft Tasman Passenger Transport Plan 2012-2015 Released The Tasman Regional Passenger Transport Plan 2012-2015 is now available for public consultation. The purpose of the Draft Regional Passenger Transport Plan is to get feedback on passenger transport services, for example subsidy of the Total Mobility Scheme and the Late Late Bus in Tasman District. Your views will help guide the Regional Transport Committee’s decision-making prior to the final Passenger Transport Plan being adopted in January 2012. The proposals are contained in two documents: •
