In 2020, teddy bears sitting in windows signified the start of a pandemic which went on to dictate how the year would continue.
The teddy bears, as always, placed smiles on children’s faces, but they also provided a sense of a community reaching out to each other. The year saw a significant amount of the Waimea Weekly’s articles telling of an amazing supportive

community that have rallied to help those who have needed it in a year full of challenges and difficulties. With this, the last Waimea Weekly edition for 2020, on behalf of all of us at the paper, we want to wish our readers a happy New
Year and relaxing fun-filled summer. There are such a variety of beautiful spots to visit and activities to do in our region, and we’ve provided information on some of those inside the paper. Visitors, welcome to the area,

What a year it’s been! Looking back now, none of us would have guessed what 2020 had in store for us. But as usual, no matter what is thrown at Tasman, we come together. I am incredibly proud of how our communities worked together to support each other, especially our most vulnerable, to get through a difficult few months. I would also like to say a huge thank you to all the essential workers who kept everything running smoothly so we could stay home and stay safe. Covid-19 threw many challenges at us, but let’s not have that be the main thing we remember from this year, instead let’s remember the community spirit that
brought everyone together because that to me is remarkable! Because we all went hard and did the work early on, we are now one of the luckiest places in the world. Tasman has bounced back to be the fastestgrowing economy in New Zealand following Covid-19, thanks to our growing population and construction sector. This is great news for our region, however, we still have a lot more work to do. We will continue to experience the side effects of 2020 for a while yet, but if we focus on the positive, support our local businesses and aim to make changes
for the better, we have the potential to come out of this stronger. We can now celebrate the festive season and enjoy our summer nearly the same as we would any other year. We have so much to experience here in Tasman, but whether you stay local or head off exploring another beautiful part of the country, please take it easy on the roads so we can all get to our destination safely. So go on, get out there, enjoy your summer with friends and family, and look forward to a fresh new year ahead. Happy holidays and best wishes from the team at Tasman District Council.

usual array of activities for all ages to get stuck into. Whether that’s going on the steam engine trailer, a honey barrel ride or having a go on the bush jigger track ride, there’s enough to keep everyone entertained for the day. Kids will love the face painting and model trains, and there’s even a display of historic trucks, speedway bikes and steam machinery.

Toilets and BBQ facilities. Distance from Richmond: 11km or 14 minutes by car. Dogs are permitted on leads only. Lake Rotoiti Lake Rotoiti, which is in an alpine

There are also great biking tracks within the forest which are flat and family-friendly for leisurely riders. Amenities include toilets, picnic, and BBQ facilities. No fresh water available. The oldest market in Tasman returns Jo Kent The oldest market in Tasman is back for its 41st year on Saturday 2 January. The Wakefield Country Fete has been showcasing local artisan products for four decades and organiser Nita Henry says this year is set to be the best yet. “Entry is free and all our stallholders are local folk who are makers, growers and crafters selling everything from soap, jewellery and plants to upcycled clothing.” The theme of the day will be ‘steam punk’ where sellers or visitors can dress up in elaborate outfits in a bid to win prizes for the best dressed. “There’s an historic aspect to the fete with the steam train and the Pegasus, so we encourage people to come dressed in their steam punk attire, which harks back to the old days,” says Nita. “It makes it a fun day and gives people an excuse to dress up and onlookers something different to look at while doing their shopping.” In previous years, over 70 stallholders have turned out to showcase their goods and this year will see a silent auction run to raise funds for Nelson Hospice and New Zealand Riding For The Disabled. If you would like to get involved,
Troye Evans won the fete’s steam punk competition last year. Photo: Supplied. there is still time to book a stall, so contact Nita on 021 227 7709. The Wakefield Country Fete starts at 9.30am at the village hall, green and car park on Whitby Way, just off SH60.

One hundred years of memories and humour Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Eileen Rae Cowles celebrated her 100th birthday on 12 December this year and says she doesn’t feel any different. She has many memories of younger days. Her earliest memory is getting an ulcerated mouth. “I shared my food with the chickens and ended up with ulcers and had to eat sops,” she says. Her father didn’t drive so the children would walk everywhere until they could ride a bike. “The cars made tracks in the shingle and it was about a foot high and hurt when I fell off my bike. I came some spillers,” she says. Her first Christmas memory was receiving a beautiful celluloid doll. “I loved it so much that I bit it’s nose off,” Eileen says. Later memories were more pleasant with her most vivid memory
being holiday time in Timaru and swimming out to a raft, and then having to wait for the tide to go out to be able to swim back to land. “Of course, all the boys were out there,” Eileen says. “I kissed the boys. We would sneak behind the bushes. We used to hug and kiss but that was all. There was no sex,” she says. She says her brother was always with her, which didn’t always please her. “He told my parents what I did and they clipped my ear. They were very strict but I never did anything I was ashamed of.” Her brother Billy was only 18 months older than her. “We were great pals. He was a bit of a sis and I was always the boss,” she says. Eileen loved the sandcastle competitions the council ran each summer. She remembers one year they had made lovely castles and were waiting for them to be

with some bits blacked out and other parts cut away. “The girls hid the letters, but when I got them I would read parts of the letter to the girls. And then they would cut parts out and put them in the paper,” she says. She joined the war effort together with her sister, Ida, and was in the Women’s Air Corp, running the officers’ mess. “It was hard going with very few amenities,” she says. Eileen remembers it was hard not getting pregnant in the first two years after she married. “I wondered if Les had been in the dessert too long,” she says. She attributes her long life to healthy living. “I didn’t drink, didn’t smoke and exercised every day, loving tennis and hockey,” she says. “She’s never owned a passport, either,” says her son Chris. Tasman Youth Council needs you! Jo Kent Reporter
jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Currently accepting new members for 2021, the Tasman Youth Council are looking for young people aged from 12-24 who are passionate about where they live and want to make a positive difference in the region. Young people with opinions on anything from how their school can cut down on plastic waste to how to transform the Modeller’s Pond site in Tahunanui are in hot demand. Their ideas can be turned into action by joining the Tasman Youth Council and getting their voices heard.
Youth councillors know what young people want and help make that happen by working on local projects, such as skate parks, street art, reserves, youth hubs and loads more. It’s a great opportunity to develop practical skills that will be helpful in social and work life: leadership, public speaking, critical thinking, communication, project and event management. Gulliver MacDonald has been a Waimea Youth Councillor for two years. “The Youth Council has come a long way since I joined in Year 11. We now have meetings in the Council Chambers, and voice our opinions and plan our own projects. “We ran some competitions over

Putting a fashion foot forward Jacqui Rawson A new tent with a focus on fashion is popping up at the races. The highlight of the Nelson Tasman summer horse racing season is happening on Sunday 10th of January and having a fantastic time without shorts and jandals is the focus at one tent. Angela Miller and Emma Silk-French are the masterminds behind the tent called Fashion Zone. “We want to see people getting arty and giving it a go,” says Emma. Historically, horse races have been the perfect place when it comes to fashion, providing the perfect opportunity for people to spend a little more time on styling their clothing and headgear. In recent years the numbers of those dressing up have dwindled at the A&P Showgrounds and Angela and Emma hope the tent will instigate a resurgence of people keen to dress their best. They are avid fans of the combination of fashion and the races, travelling across the country to attend other fashion in the field type events. “Numbers are huge at these events in other

Now is the time to start thinking about mulching the garden, especially when there is moisture already in the ground. Mulching after a good rain will trap in the moisture that is there and help retain it throughout the coming drier months. During the summer months you need to retain moisture and mulch. Try our quality compost, Canterbury Landscapes Garden Gro and Tui Mulch and Feed. Mulching will help save on the water bill, so it’s a great win, win situation!

Local artist, Nicole Russell, loves painting in oil and watercolour. Her oil paintings show the characteristic work of the palette knife and are done with a heavy impasto layer. She also paints with watercolours because of their transparency and fluidity. Nicole likes to paint what she sees and loves to paint outdoors (en plein air), or when the weather isn’t favourable, she enjoys painting still lifes in her studio. She likes to emphasize the light that she sees reflecting between different objects while she is painting, and her works also show strong contrast. Many of Nicole’s paintings are about local scenes of the Nelson/Tasman area. In Annapolis, USA, Nicole was originally trained in drawing and watercolour painting, especially Watercolour Journaling. Nicole has exhibited in the US and in New Zealand. Her paintings received Honorable Mention and People’s Choice recognition. Nicole’s studio is located in Richmond/Tasman where she teaches watercolour and oil painting in small classes. She also teaches Painting for All Levels at Waimea College. Nicole Russell Art is permanently exhibited at Wall to Wall Art Gallery, Nelson. She is a working artist member of Nelson Suter Art Society and coordinates the weekly painting locations of the plein air painters in the Nelson-Tasman area. Here’s another fun option for families or friends – why not book a tour of Fossil Creek Farm? Located in the Wairoa Valley, the farm spans 100 acres of land. “We have 100 animals either rescued or chosen by choice,” says owner Jude Porteous. “We offer small group farm tours, which include a tour around the animals interacting in their natural environment within the paddock. Some animals we feed, others we observe.” Jude says all of the animals are very placid and easy-going. You will see miniature donkeys, miniature horses and big horses, alpacas, kune kune pigs, highland cattle, normal cows, ducks, geese, chickens, cats and dogs. “There’s even a small herd of wild Kaimanawa horses you might catch a glimpse of.” Fossil Creek Farm is open every day from 9am to 5pm. Bookings are essential. “We only do 2-3 tours a day to make it a relaxed, enjoyable experience for people.” To find out more visit or book a tour, visit Fossil Creek Farm on Facebook. During the summer holidays, be sure to check out the exciting Nelson Tasman Parks Programme which is run by Community Leisure Management (CLM) on behalf of Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council. “It’s all about getting kids and fami-

Recommended holiday reading Richmond Library’s recommendation: Auē by New Zealand author Becky Manawatu. A novel that is both raw and sublime.Taukiri was born into sorrow. The story spills out of the gang violence that killed his father and sent his mother into hiding, and the shame he feels about abandoning his eight-year-old brother Ārama to a violent home. But Ārama is braver than he looks, and he has a friend and his friend has a dog, and the three of them together might just be strong enough to turn back the tide of sorrow. He won two Victoria Crosses (the only combat soldier ever to do so) and in the opinion of his superiors deserved many more. Captured, he became an escape artist and ended his war in the famous Colditz POW camp. Nelson MP, Rachel Boyack’s recommendation:
The Dry, by Australian author Jane Harper. Federal Agent Aaron Falk arrives in his hometown for the first time in decades for the funeral of his best friend, Luke. Amid the worst drought in a century, Falk and the local detective question what really happened. As Falk investigates to see if there’s more to Luke’s death than there seems to be, longburied mysteries resurface, as do the lies that have haunted them. Falk will find that small towns have big secrets.
Enjoy your toys and presents this summer and stay safely away from power lines Many people may have bought or been given drones, model aircraft or kites for Christmas. They’re great fun when used safely but if you aren’t familiar with the rules of flying the potential for things to go wrong increases.

Flying drones, model aircraft and kites close to power lines can quickly ruin the fun and put people and property at risk. We want everyone to enjoy their unmanned aircraft this summer and we also want everyone to be safe, especially when around electricity. Flying your drone or model aircraft too close to power lines or equipment can cause a flashover - an abnormal electrical discharge that can start a fire. Flying too close to power lines or associated equipment can also affect your craft’s signal. Model aircraft, kites or drones touching power lines or equipment can cause an explosion, a fire or electrocution. Remember, judging distance from the ground or via an onboard camera is difficult and it does not provide an accurate measurement. Please fly your drone, model aircraft or kite in places where there are no overhead lines and other electrical assets. Know what to do to keep yourselves, your friends and your family safe. Teach the children around you to play safely with drones, model aircraft and kites. Here’s what you need to do to help you stay safe: z
Always fly your aircraft in an area free of power lines and associated equipment
z
Keep your aircraft within your line of sight at all times
z
Fly drones and model craft in clear, calm weather when it is easier to see them and keep them under control
z
Only fly your aircraft during daylight hours
z
If your aircraft becomes entangled in power lines or electrical equipment, or flies into a substation, phone us on 0800 508 100. We will safely retrieve it for you. The team who work on and around our lines are trained to enter these facilities safely and are on call to help.
Have fun and play safely this summer!

Edens Road – The man behind the name Marg Farrelly William Eden was born at Hope in 1849. His parents, Richard and Mary Eden, had emigrated from Yorkshire, England, on the ship ‘Phoebe’ and arrived in Nelson in 1842. Richard farmed land situated in Waimea East, some of this area was originally known as Ranzau but was renamed Hope in 1914. Richard and Mary had several sons; Henry, William, Samuel, and George. They also had three daughters; Martha, Sarah Ann, and Elizabeth. Richard was fortunate that three of the sons, (William, Samuel, and George) all became farmers as at one stage he lost one of his arms while working a threshing machine. The three sons worked the land with him. Once William had finished his schooling, he followed his father in farming the land at Hope. He had a farm of 162 acres, utilising both grazing and agriculture. William married Margaret Ann Moore in 1874. Together they raised a large family of 11 children, having five sons and six daughters over a period of twenty years. Their third-born son died early, at the tender age of 13 months. His parents planted a camellia bush on his grave in the Richmond cemetery but this was removed, believed stolen, several months later. This lead William to advertise a reward for any information provided that it led to a conviction. William competed in an Ag-
Farmer from the late 1800s, William Eden. Photo: Supplied. ricultural Association ploughing match in 1869. A great many of the prizes were taken by ploughmen from Waimea West. Three series of prizes were on offer - horse wheelploughs; horse swing-ploughs; bullock ploughs. An additional prize of £1 was offered for the straightest single furrow. William took this prize using a Ransome and Sims plough. Matches such as this were held infrequently due to the inability of the association to procure ground suitable for the purpose. The runholders returns in 1879
and 1880 reveal the number of sheep and lambs that William had on his property. In 1879 there were 140. The following year, only 132. Ten years later in 1890, the figure was again 132. He was a committee member of the local school and of the Agricultural and Pastoral Society. William died at the age of 50 in 1899, drowned while attempting to cross a river, and is buried in the Richmond Cemetery. His wife Margaret outlived him by a further 42 years and is buried beside him.
MP’s look back at 2020 and forward to 2021 Comments from Damien O’Connor A comment on 2020: “For almost every New Zealander the year has been exhausting. I hope those who can get a good break do, and those who can’t are respected for providing essential services and hopefully get a well-deserved break sometime Looking ahead to 2021: We’d all like to see progress in so many areas. Comments from Rachel Boyack A comment on 2020: 2020 was one of the most difficult years on record for many in the Nelson region, and I would like to thank all Nelsonian’s for their response to Covid-19 and for keeping our community safe. Looking ahead to 2021: My focus will be on ensuring that our region is well represented as we recover and rebuild from Covid-19. And over the New Year? I’ll be taking a bit of a break, spending time with family, and hopefully going to the beach often (if we can avoid the rain!)

There was plenty of success for Tasman athletes this year on the local, national and international sporting scene. In a first for Waimea College, their fullback Macca Springer was named UC Championship Player of the Year.
