Railway bar robbery arrest Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The police have arrested a man related to an armed robbery at the Railway Tavern. The robbery took place in the middle of the afternoon three weeks ago and Nelson CID iden-
tified a 34-year-old male who was arrested in Tauranga last Friday, October 30th. He was charged with aggravated robbery and was due to appear in Tauranga District Court on Saturday. The man had threatened The Railway owner, Travis Cooper, with a gun pressed into the back
of his neck and fled on foot with some surplus cash. Various CCTV cameras in the area captured footage of the man and he was seen getting into a car near McDonalds. The car took off towards the Waimea Old Boy’s Rugby Club and was last seen heading into Dorset Street.
The car was later recovered by the police. Several items of interest were recovered inside the car which gave the police lines of enquiry to follow up. Nelson Bays Area Commander Inspector Paul Borrell says he is pleased an arrest has been made. “Our investigations team has worked tirelessly over the past
fortnight to make an identification and gather information. “A search warrant was also executed, during which items of interest including a vehicle, clothing, and a firearm were recovered. “We hope this arrest brings some reassurance to the community, who may have been alarmed by this incident.”

I’m pleased with the outcome on both counts. It’s good that people now have an end-oflife choice.
It was along the lines of what I expected, but I was surprised it was such a close call on the cannabis vote.
I’m happy to finally find out the PM’s leanings. She should have told us at the start.
Not happy. I was hoping the cost of medicinal cannabis would become more affordable if it had been successful.

Brightwater targeted in crime spree Jo Kent Reporter
jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Brightwater residents have been left feeling uneasy after many attempted thefts and multiple car break-ins last Thursday night. One resulted in the torching of a Mitsubishi Outlander in the sports grounds off Lord Rutherford Road North. Dozens of cars were looted of wallets, phones, car radios, clothes and tools, while others had been driven out of driveways and dumped elsewhere in the surrounding area. Thousands of dollars worth of items have been stolen, mostly things that can be resold quickly and easily. On Thursday night, residents from Starveall Street, Malthouse Crescent and Lord Rutherford Road North, amongst others,

The news that something wasn’t quite right spread quickly throughout the community with residents warning each other on Facebook that people were acting suspiciously, breaking into cars and rummaging around in garages and carports. While Jamie says social pages are great for keeping people informed in real-time, suspicious activity still needs to be reported to either 111 or 105. “Even if you don’t think it’s going anywhere, it helps us link evidence together,” he says.

Local mum gets book deal Jo Kent Reporter
jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz
When Richmond mum Rebekah Ballagh set up her Instagram account, she never thought she’d be approached by an international publisher offering to turn her mindfulness illustrations into a book. Having worked as a counsellor in the Nelson Tasman region for 7 years, she wanted to use the techniques she’d learnt in a more accessible way to help her clients cope with their feelings. “I thought, if I could illustrate some effective counselling tools and put them on Instagram to help just one person, I’d be stoked with that,” says Rebekah. “It snowballed from there, a publisher got in touch and now I’m launching my own book, ‘Note To Self.’” she said. The hand-illustrated book is a toolbox to navigate your way through anxiety, stress or depression. “The book makes therapeutic concepts digestible and easy to understand at the glance of an image,” says Rebekah.” Rebekah added that when you feel overwhelmed, you forget how to cope, and just looking at an image is a quick and easy reminder on what to do. Challenges impact farmers’ mental health Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz
What’s the weather going to do is a question we’ve all asked. While for many of us it affects our recreation, for farmers it impacts their livelihood. Unpredictable weather is just one of the challenges farmers face on an ongoing basis, along with long hours and isolation. Ongoing and recent challenges have had an impact on the mental health of farmers. Local farmer, Murray King of Kingsway Farms, said over recent years challenges to mental health have become more obvious and more acceptable to talk about. “In particular, suicide has gone under the radar and no one talked about it, but now they do,” Murray said. He believed that the suicide rate per capita is higher in farmers than any other in-
dustry. “There are so many different and opposing forces farmers face on a regular basis,” he said. Richard Kempthorne, chair of The Top of the South Rural Support Trust believes many farmers still struggle to ask for help. “They like to manage,” he said. The Trust provides support with mental health and connection to counselling services. While a listening ear is sometimes all that is required, the Trust can facilitate access to counselling services and wants farmers to be aware that help is available. Richard said the Trust is also available to help owners of lifestyle blocks, who face unique challenges regarding the health and welfare of their animals. Although many stresses farmers face are ongoing, there have been some additional unique pressures
this year. Richard said the governments freshwater package has left a lot of uncertainty on how to practically farm. “Farmers want to do a good job and look after the land and the water, but can feel quite harassed,” Richard said. Not knowing what changes were coming and what they need to do to meet regulations, while still farming practically, is a concern. The Rural Support Trust coordinates the questions farmers in the district have, funnelling questions to the Tasman District Council who then gets answers from the Ministry for the Environment. Knowledge can help to reduce pressures. “As much as anything it’s getting answers to the questions,” Richard said. “It’s being a sounding board to talk when stresses and pressures add up,” he said. The substantial drought of the past two years and
the impact of covid-19 on farmers are additional pressures. Local farmer, Evan Baigent spoke of covid-19’s impact on farmers. Social distancing in meat processing plants during lockdown had reduced the number of stock processed each day. Farmers were not always able to get some of their prime stock into the works. “This put considerable strain on farmers,” Evan said. While some farmers were able to ask for help with mental health issues, Evan said more often it is others that communicate the need. It can take a while for people to accept they really need help. “Very often it is the spouse that says, “Hey, we need help,”” he said. If you or a family member or friend need help, you can call Rural Support Trust 0800 787 254 for a free confidential chat.

Auction, huge success Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
It was a huge result for a charity auction at Nelson College last week. The auction raised about $55,000 for The Key to Life Charity, which advocates for mental health issues. The charity was chosen by the school’s student council. “I want to give my heartfelt thanks to all the suppliers, without whose donations we wouldn’t have achieved what we did, says event organiser, Steve Page.
The highest bid of the night fought out between just two bidders, was for the Trends Kitchens with a resulting bid of $20,000. “$50,000 was the target set at the start of the year and this goal was smashed out of the park, says Nelson College deputy principal, Ron Kelly. Ron says the community backed the event filling the hall to capacity and generously supporting the event by buying every item that was on the auction list. Nelson College would like to express their gratitude to all the individuals, businesses and
sponsors that made the night such a success “We are especially grateful to the Page-Bates whanau without whom the night would not have been possible – Jenny, Steve and son Stanley were unstoppable in their quest to make this the best fund raising event that Nelson College has ever held because of their unselfish support,” says Ron. Three of the representatives from Key to Life also flew to Nelson for the event with representative, Tai Tupou speaking from the heart about his background of dealing with mental health issues.

The beauty of skyscapes Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The beauty of our region’s land, sea and skyscapes is the inspiration behind Dharan Longley’s photography exhibition ‘Elemental Beauty.’ He looks for images that touch him immediately, particularly visual moments that surprise him. From the moment his parents
gifted him a camera, Dharan loved photography. While he has exhibited reasonably frequently, he realised he had a vast array of great photos that were too good to sit at home. “It was time to step out and step up to a solo exhibition,” Dharan says. He favours the impact of large canvas images without the boundary of frames, feeling their size and texture create the
sense of being in nature itself. “This makes photography a living art for me,” he said. For Dharan, good art must engage feelings. “A great image will stimulate and affect you emotionally,” he says. The exhibition will be in Nelson Suter Art Society’s McKee Gallery, 208 Bridge Street, Nelson, from Tuesday 10th to Sunday 29th November from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm daily.

Subsidies for insulation of 2000 local homes Erin Bradnock
A project dedicated to making the homes of those in the Top of the South warmer and healthier to live in has just celebrated its 2000th insulation. Warmer Healthier Homes Nelson – Marlborough has been subsidising insulation projects in the region since 2014. Project chairman Leeson Bradley says it’s an amazing achievement for the programme, which is administered by Absolute Energy. “It’s 2000 families living in healthy homes.” Insulating a home typically costs between $2,500 and $5000 in New Zealand. Henry Nepia of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority acknowledged the work still to be done, saying the authority is still getting up to a 1000 enquires for insulations a week. Project founder and former chairman, Bill Dahlberg, says
Dr Jean Simpson, Carrie Mozena, Leeson Bradley and Margaret Gibbs celebrate Warmer Healthier Homes’ 2000th insulation. Photo: Erin Bradnock. it was aimed at addressing vulnerable communities who frequented health care because of cold and damp homes. Bill says meeting the families who receive the insulation is
the best thing about the work. Nelson’s deputy mayor Judene Edgar says the project was a natural fit for the council. “Everyone deserves to have a healthy home,” she says.

Build a kart, race a kart Jacqui Rawson Reporter
jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The Tapawera Area School (TAS) takes the lead in running an annual event of grass-kart racing. Twenty-seven karts took part this year with many coming from other schools in the district. “Our kart, number 27, was the only kart running at the end of the day, if you don’t worry about the oil leak,” says year 9 student Levi Bint. Racing for the first time this year, Levi said that kart 26 blew a tyre coming off the bend and kart number 25 was smoking, and then the chain popped off. Reefton Area and Greymouth schools had karts in the event and Murchison Area School sent a busload of students to watch the races with a chance they might come back next year with their own karts. Other parts of the community getting behind the event included students studying automotive and engineering courses at NMIT, along with NMIT catering students who ran a food stall. The police were there checking speed times but also became competitors and competed

year,” says coordinator for the Mechanical Engineering department at NMIT, Dryden Aelaus. The idea behind the event, which is in its 8th year, goes way beyond just competing in a race. It has no
points scoring, prizes or losers, but rather is meant to be a fun day out coupled with gaining experience and learning new skills. Learning involved how to be part of a team and how to compete

with good sportsmanship, students also learn driving skills and how to build a kart. Then there’s how to repair the kart when it goes belly up. How to obey rules and regulations and how to do karting with specific weather conditions in mind, which sometimes involves mud. Part of the event includes a trades expo for students to check out potential career paths. As well as NMIT, there were a variety of stalls featuring local industries such as Nelson Honey which brought along a hive to show bees in action. The stalls provided information in ways that would appeal to all ages, knowing local schools include students aged from 5-18 years plus. “With eight events on and still going strong I feel very proud to be a part of it, and what a day! Stunningly great weather, racing and so many smiling faces,” says event organiser Sandy Phyn. Sandy, also the school caretaker, is the person behind the idea for the success event. “By the day’s end none of our karts were still running, always a sign of a good hard day in the dirt,” says Tapawera Area School principal Kelvin Woodley.

Sometimes all it takes is a man in a tutu. Matt Redwood appeared quite comfortable in his quite eye-catching ensemble of pink cowboy hat, skin-tight pink teeshirt and voluptuous tutu. “It’s not that bad really, says Matt, it’s only for one day and if it brings attention to the cause it’s worth it.” And worth it, it was! The coffee shop, Coffee on Queen raised $403.50. A quite sizable amount above what the buckets placed in shops usually receive. For every coffee made by Matt, Coffee on Queen donated $1 to the Breast Cancer Foundation. “It’s been amazing, with most customers adding extra cash into the bucket after we’d put our dollar in,” says Matt. LANDSAR have two volunteer dogs and two others undergoing training, which takes about two years. “The dogs are, ideally, used first,” says Malcolm. They pick up human scent so are sent in before the area is contaminated. The summer season, and particularly holidays, are busy times for Search and Rescue. Over Labour Weekend they were called out eight times in the Nelson Tasman region.
“With Covid-19, Kiwis can’t travel so they are climbing that mountain they always wanted to,” he says. Malcolm stressed the importance of carrying a PLB and telling someone you trust where you are going. Last month, a father and son spent $20 to hire a PLB for their climb up Mount Patriarch in the Mount Richmond Forest Park. “It was undoubtedly the best $20 they have spent in their life,” says Malcolm. Lost and hypothermic, they activated their PLB and were found. It saved their lives.

eternal, all-powerful, all-wise and all-loving God. He spoke the world into existence (Genesis 1). He upholds the universe by the word of his power (Hebrews 1:3). That means every atom and every molecule and every force in nature in under his control. You’ll find all these things in the Bible. It is God’s selfrevelation. When we enter into a personal relationship with God through his son Jesus, the Bible comes alive. As we read it, God reveals himself to us and gives us all the peace and security we ever need, even if our lives seem to be falling apart. That really is good news in today’s uncertain world.

How do you respond when you experience uncertainty? Where do you turn? When you are overwhelmed with the unknown and it feels like life is unravelling on you, what do you cling to for stability? Nothing in this world is stable. Everything in changing and therefore uncertain. We will only find certainty and stability in something (or someone) outside of us. That’s where the Bible comes in. Sue Lubransky - TPNET Sue Lubransky has been involved in the region since 1984; having lived, worked and played in Tasman, Marlborough and Nelson. In Jan 2005, Sue jumped at the opportunity to ‘join the local ISP’ and has loved the tech adventure ever since… Now general manager, Sue says, “From our Richmond office, TPNET proudly built our own Fixed Wireless Broadband Network from the ground up in the early 2000’s. Today we connect our communities all the way across the top of the South Island, with true high- speed Fibre and Rural Broadband Internet solutions.” TPNET was awarded government funding for the Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI2), to build, expand and extend wireless internet access across our region. “Hence, TPNET is dramatically growing our capacity for Rural Broadband and Fibre Services, increasing our ability to connect people.” Over the years, Sue and TPNET have formed longstanding personal connections with many families and companies, often with multi-site locations and connections “As the local provider, we pride ourselves on quality service connections to our local business community.” Real People, Real Service, visit www.tpnet.nz Diane Lamont - Richmond Sewing “I think of us as a ‘Repair Shop’ for clothing,” says Diane, the new owner of Richmond Sewing, located at the Richmond Mall by the entrance next to the Cheesecake Shop. “Customers come to us with clothes like their favourite pair of jeans, a concert shirt from years gone by, clothing given to them by a loved one or passed down through generations. I see the emotional attachment customers have to their clothes and to be able to repair or alter these garments for them is a real privilege.” People also bring in clothes they have found at charity stores and have them altered. Diane says it’s a great way to get value for money, help reduce impact on the environment and getting clothes that fit them perfectly. A customer recently said to her, ‘altering my clothes means that I love to wear everything in my wardrobe.’ “I think that sums it up perfectly,” agrees Diane. Hemming remains a large part of the business, with customers bringing their purchases made at the Richmond Mall and other local stores. Richmond Sewing has also recently added new services including embroidery and custom t-shirt designs. Debbie Lee and Sebun Harkess - Zip Bab There’s been an exciting development on Queen Street with the recent opening of Zipbab Korean Restaurant. You’ll love the fresh modern interior and exciting Korean menu. Zipbab is owned by Sebun, with help from her daughter Debbie whose beautiful artworks adorns the walls. Sebun loves cooking and the name ‘Zipbab’, translated from Korean, means ‘home cooking.’ “Lots of friends encouraged me to open my own restaurant.” says Sebun. “Cooking Korean food can be quite ‘labour intensive’ because there are many different elements which often require marinating. It’s also expensive, because lots of ingredients are imported from Korea.” Zipbab is currently just open for lunches, but from 10 November will be open for dinners too. “My friend’s son, John Lee, has recently joined us. He is an experienced chef and will also help with the management side. John’s speciality is Korean-style fried chicken.” Zipbab will also offer a deep-fried vegetarian dish with 7 different vegetables, a light but filling buckwheat noodle salad with a bit of spice, and many more delicous lunch or takeaway dishes to choose from.” Zipbab Korean Restaurant is located at 227 Queen Street, Richmond.

Kiwiwifi is a provider of low-cost, high-speed rural wireless internet services in hard to reach places. “Kiwiwifi is a Crown Infrastructure Partner and has been rolling out fixed wireless broadband in the Nelson-Tasman region for about four to five years,” says managing director Chris Mayer. “We are specialists in the rural broadband field who have been allocated grant funding from crown infrastructure to provide broadband in rural and remote places in the NelsonTasman region.” The government has engaged with Kiwiwifi to provide rural broadband through fixed wireless. “Being a fixed wireless operator, we are not reliant on Spark or Chorus, etc, to deliver broadband services. We have our own purpose-built independent network to deliver broadband services.” Kiwiwifi has a network of trained professionals in the field – fibre and CISCO-trained technicians. “We have competition in this field, but we know we can offer a better service at a cheaper rate.” Kiwiwifi is building a network which covers everywhere from Murchison to Golden Bay to Linkwater and has an on-going contract to deliver services to those areas. To find out more, visit www.kiwiwifi.nz. Richmond-based company Kiwi Safe Net Solutions Ltd have been installing safety nets for internal fall protection in Nelson and Tasman since early 2013. Chris is a qualified motor mechanic who spent 24 years in the aviation industry. He has gained accreditation in Workplace Health & Safety and has a strong interest in the building industry. Kiwi Safe Net Solutions Ltd is a SiteWise accredited company. “Safety nets have to be tested every 12 months, so we have invested in equipment to test our own nets,” says Chris.“We are committed to doing everything right. We are always on time and we get the job done.” Accountsdept. supports over 100 clients around the Nelson Tasman region with everything from payroll, software training, marketing and dayto-day business needs to traditional and modern bookkeeping services. By outsourcing your bookkeeping and admin to Accountsdept., you’ll save on time and overheads and lower your stress levels. Real estate professional Michelle Westrupp is still achieving fantastic results and providing outstanding service to her clients. The fantastic reviews she receives from her clients are a tribute to this. “I am proud to be one of Summit’s top performers having already achieved Summit Real Estate’s “Champion” status for the 2020/2021 year. I attribute my success to the trust my clients place in me and the respect and support from my colleagues and management.” The market is still buoyant and buyer demand is continuing to outweigh supply and there seems to be no sign of any change happening soon. Summit Real Estate continues to command a significant share of the market in the area. “It has been great to help several first home buyers into homes this year,” Michelle said. With interest rates at an all-time low the timing couldn’t be more perfect for borrowing for a new home purchase or an investment property. “I’m always looking for new listings and would welcome your call anytime if you or someone you know is thinking of selling.” Michelle’s motto is: “I Live it, Love it and Sell it!” – So list and sell with Michelle.

Butcher, harbourmaster, lighthouse keeper Dianne Scott William Edward Cross was born in Walmer, Kent, in 1840 and arrived in Nelson on the Maori from Plymouth on 11th June 1853, a 93-day voyage as a steerage passenger. Records suggest that he lived with his older brother James Cross, Nelson’s first harbourmaster who served 32 years in the position. William studied under James on the pilot boat for around 3 years, and then applied to the Provincial Council for the assistant harbourmaster position. He was advised he did not hold the proper papers, so it was arranged for William to complete a return trip to the United Kingdom, studying under the master of the ship to receive his mate’s certificate. On his return he found the position of assistant harbourmaster had been filled. James and William approached the Provincial Council and a meeting was held which resolved that William had been treated unfairly. The Council considered that the engagement with him merely enti-
tled him, upon his furnishing proper certificates of his competency, to work or manage vessels, with effect from the first appointment that became available after his return as a pilot and or any other appointment for which the Government might consider him competent. In 1862 he married Mary Jane Taylor, with whom he had 15 children. That same year he was also appointed as the first lighthouse keeper of the new lighthouse on the Boulder Bank and remained there until 1865. He then served twelve months as assistant pilot to his brother and then 12 months on the Tasmanian Maid – the steam tug that bought sailing ships into Nelson harbour via the old entrance on the West side of Haulashore Island. It was 1869 that found the family living and farming at Ranzau, Hope. From what I can find, William’s first butchers shop was called City Butchery, in Nelson. He sold this shop to James Gardner in 1889, then purchased another butchers shop from a Mr Chittenden, on the corner
Richmond’s first Gun City store is scheduled to open by the weekend, with the final touches being made to the storefront this week. The new shop, located next door to Kmart at the top of Richmond Mall, will be around three times the size of the Motueka branch and will house 450 guns on the wall. The company is New Zealand’s biggest new and used firearms dealer. The site of the store has sat empty since last year after Benge & Co relocated. Photo: Jo Kent.
of Waimea and Hardy Streets. By 1872 he was listed as a butcher in Brightwater, where he had a slaughterhouse. In 1875 there must have been a scarcity of meat as he, together with all the butchers in Nelson, agreed to set their prices. Oh to have those prices now, ‘7 pence for a pound of sausages and mutton at 4 pence per pound’. In 1894 he bought a butchers shop in Richmond from a Mr J Ingram. In 1896 he was a farmer and butcher at Hope and Richmond, and was charged by the Nelson Council for hawking meat inside the Nelson town boundaries for which he did not hold a hawkers license. This was a test case (the first) and was apparently quite a court case, with lots of witnesses called. The court found there was not enough information to convict him. The Cross family played a large part in the development of Nelson. William died in 1910, aged 72, in Nelson Hospital after a long illness, and was buried in the Richmond Cemetery. Mary Jane’s death followed four years later in 1916.

Helpers needed for Christmas Jo Kent Reporter
jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The annual Brightwater Carols in the Park, hosted by Wanderers Sports Club, is in jeopardy this year due to a lack of volunteers. The family event is scheduled for Friday, 4 December between 5 pm-8.30 pm, but the worry is that it may be scrapped if there aren’t enough people to help out on the night. The evening has been a local tradition for years, with a bouncy castle and face paint-
ing for the kids, a sausage sizzle, meat raffles and, of course, the festive sing-along carols. This year sees the revival of the Best Dressed competition with prizes to be won. And Santa will even show up to do a lolly scramble! The kitchen will be open for buying goodies, but you can bring your own food and a blanket and make a night of it. “We host the event every year and people love it but we can’t do it without the support of our local families or volunteers,” says club manager Diane Drogemuller.
“For some reason, people just don’t seem to be available this year, which means it may not go ahead,” she added. Volunteers will lend a hand for a couple of hours, either in the kitchen, selling raffle tickets or manning the sausage sizzle stand. All help is welcomed and will contribute to keeping the Christmas magic alive for the community. If you or someone you know would like to volunteer, please email Diane ASAP at sportwanderers@xtra.co.nz or call 03 542 3344 and leave a message.

The Waimea Village established a committee 8 years ago to ensure that their village, termed a ‘lifestyle village,’ lives up to its name. The committee, made up of residents, are keen enthusiasts behind fundraising for their community. Their main aim is for there to be a central venue for entertainment, information sharing and general socialising. They fundraise to ensure it
exists and that it is well maintained. “Blue Heron Lodge is the centre for our resident’s activities in a place of comfort out of the wind,” says Waimea Village committee chairman, John Hewison. The lodge provides fitness classes, indoor bowls and table tennis - and then there’s the library, singing groups and Housie. One of the highlights on their fundraising calendar is their annual garage sale, which is being
held on the 14th of November. Funds raised go towards bringing in entertainment to the lodge, information sessions to keep residents up to speed on things like scams to be aware of and improvements to the lodge. Past funds have gone to installation of smoke alarms in village homes. The garage sale is happening on The Drive, Waimea Village, on Saturday, 14th November from 7.30 am until 12 noon. There is no EFTPOS, cash only.

Zac Griffiths may only be 16, but the music that brought him success over Labour Weekend was a country song written in 1951. His singing and yodelling of Hank Williams’, ‘Weary Blues’ won him the overall intermediate prize at the NZ Sun City Country Music Awards. His duet with Maddison Connor placed second, giving Zac the top two places in that section. Over the weekend he won seven categorie, including best original song and best local entry. His winning original song, ‘When
tracks had trains,’ was inspired by his great grandparents. His great grandfather was killed by a train in 1946 when he was caught between two carriages. His great grandmother, Maggie Griffith, was one of a group of women who protested the 1955 railway closure by sitting on the lines near Tapawera. The sit-in lasted ten days and saw nine women arrested. Again, inspired by family, Zac recently wrote a song about his grandfather becoming a bit forgetful. With the lyrics “It won’t be long ‘til he doesn’t know my name, but he’ll be my Grandad just the same,” the song titled ‘Grandad just the Same’ won a regional award this year.

Richmond Athletic juniors reflect on season. The Richmond Athletic Football Club celebrated its junior prize-giving, and after going through such a strange and challenging year, thought it would great to get everyone together for a “big family photo”. The club thanks all their members and sponsors for their continued support throughout 2020 and looks forward to gearing up for another great season in 2021. Photo Supplied
Hill climb huge success Jacqui Rawson With last Saturday a day full of rain, the Brightwater Moto X event organisers, Dan Shallcrass and Bryan Heaphy, had to postpone their event to Sunday. And what a beautiful day it turned out to be. Crowds were blessed with a full sky of sunshine and exciting, action-packed performances. Jarrod Guthrie on his Kawasaki 450cc was the first to show them who the King of Hill was. Not once, but twice. Few got even close to those all-
important yellow flags at the furthest reaches of the peak. The majority were determined to get their bikes over the road via the jump that was to propel them onwards up to the peak. But many struggled to make the jump and then lost momentum in the churnedup dirt of the chicken line. Riders cranked their throttles and shifted their weight, anything to get their bikes as far and as fast up the hill as possible, which included tearing through some ridges that are a natural challenge of any hill. It’s a serious challenge to get even
a 450cc motorbike up the 45-degree incline that made up that final peak. So, it’s perhaps not surprising that the biggest stir of the day’s events happened when junior rider Bailey Basalaj mastered that very incline on his little 250cc bike. Which, coincidently, just happened to also be a Kawasaki. Jarrod Guthrie is this year’s Senior King of the Hill and Bailey Basalaj is the Junior King of the Hill. King of the Hill will be back next year on Labour Weekend on that same hill - maybe you’ll be the next King!

Legacy of number 48n set to continue Jody Scott
Speedway Reporter editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The number 48n car has been dancing around the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway since the swinging 70s, Phil Nicholls was the first to run 48n on the side of his race car, a legacy that now stretches nearly 50 years and three generations. In 2020 it’s Phil’s grandson Locky Martin, the 3rd generation driver, who will keep the story rolling into the future. He’s just starting out his speedway career in his first full season piloting the quarter
midget car. Between them is Brett Nicholls, whose career started in the early 2000s. The son of Phil and uncle to Locky, he is one of Nelson’s leading super stock drivers. It will be a busy year for the family with Locky scheduled to race in Nelson, Christchurch and Greymouth over the summer months. Brett’s focus is aimed towards Rotorua and the New Zealand title. World 240s and triples meetings are all there over the season. Brett has managed to make the New Zealand finals seven times out of the last ten years,

a huge effort in anyone’s book. Last time the national title was in Rotorua, he was on track for a podium position, while he qualified for the 240’s final last year, so he is keen to do well again this season. Locky is just starting out but has shown huge improvement already, cutting three seconds off his first lap times. He was named after the rugby league legend Darren Lockyer by his father, a big Brisbane Bronco’s fan and Nelson Speedway president Wayne Martin, a former stock car driver himself. Locky will have a season to himself before brother Taylor joins him on the race track.
I don’t see what the fuss is about. It’s a great car, Toyota really nailed it with that one. Make sure you guys nail it with your WOF from us. Save waiting phone for an appointment now!

Richmond’s Shannon McIlroy could be forgiven for having better touch with his paintbrush than his bowls of late. The 33-year-old painter and decorator by trade and national bowls representative won his fifth North East Valley 10.000 event in Dunedin last week, while also defending his title from 2019. He won his first North East Valley title as a 19-year-old in 2006. He also won in 2009 and 2012. Shannon beat Canterbury’s Andrew Kelly 21-17 in the final “In some ways, it was probably harder than the nationals, because there was nowhere to hide.” Shannon says family time has been a focus during the Coronavirus pandemic as bowls just were not possible. “There was a stint of six months there where I didn’t pick up a bowl,” he says. “I have never had such a long time away from the game in my career, even as a teenager I played more regularly than that.” Shannon says the North East Valley tournament always holds a special place in his heart. “It’s always a challenging tournament and I know some of the younger guys are gunning to take me down, just like I had the same mentality when I first won the event.” Shannon says he understands as an international player, he has “a tar-

get on my back” but he was eager to share his knowledge with the emerging players. Shannon says work and family commitments are always a priority, but he believed he had many years left as an international player. “I still feel like one of the young guys and if I continue to have the support of my wife and family then I’ll keep going for as long as I can.”
