Mayor’s Christmas Message It’s fair to say that 2021 has been another challenging year for everyone in our community. As we look forward to the summer period we’re hopeful that our recent run of slightly cloudy weather will improve and provide an opportunity for everyone to make the most of the great outdoors that the region has to offer. One of the huge positives over the course of the year has been the way that we have supported our local business community, particularly

those in the hospitality sector that have faced some of the biggest challenges. Wherever you are over the Christmas holiday – be it in Tasman or another part of New Zealand – keep up that support. The many uncertainties that have characterised the last year are likely to continue into 2022. This has led to some strongly-held opinions and unfortunately some division. I would hope that we can show an increased level of tol-

erance and respect for those who don’t share our views and particularly understand the difficult position of many people working on the frontline of retail and hospitality and essential services who are only implementing what is required of them. I would you to encourage you to show them both appreciation and support whenever you get the opportunity. This holiday season, like every other, is a great opportunity to take a break and connect with friends and family.

Be grateful that despite the challenges we face, we live in an amazing part of the country. Spare a thought and reach out to those less fortunate for whom this time of year can present its own challenges. This is an opportunity for us all to show the best of who we are as a community and perhaps the best gift we can give is a bit of goodwill, compassion and kindness. Whatever you are doing over Christmas and New Year – enjoy yourself, from all of us at Tasman District Council.

Take care of your furred friends this Christmas Christmas is almost here, but along with the fun and extra time we get to spend with our fur kids, the festive season does come with an increased risk of them eating things they shouldn’t. Pet insurance provider PD Insurance’s chief operating officer, Michelle Le Long, says the holidays are a particularly hazardous time for pets. It not only includes the perils of specialty foods that are fine for humans but toxic to animals, it’s followed by long summer days outside where pets can come across all manner of poisons, toxins and choking hazards. “Over the last year almost 10 per cent of our claims in NZ for dogs were due to accidental ingestion,” Michelle

says. “These ranged from dogs who ate something poisonous and needed to be treated with drips or medication, through to dogs who had an obstruction and were choking, and dogs who needed surgical removal of objects from their trachea or stomach.” Christmas mince pies and chocolates are popular food items to have around at Christmas, but pet owners should be very careful to keep these out of reach of pets. Be alert also for cherry pits, Christmas nuts, onions, garlic and coffee, along with human medication, supplements and essential oils, as accidental ingestion of these could prove fatal to dogs and cats.

Have a break assured services will be managed WE ARE HERE 7 DAYS A WEEK, 24 HOURS A DAY OVER THE HOLIDAY SEASON 03 543 8400

Both chocolate and the artificial sweetener xylitol are toxic to dogs and cats, so any food products containing these items should be kept far from the reach of a wandering tongue. The same goes for grapes and the raisins in fruit mince pies and slices of Christmas cake. They could prove fatal if your fur kid decides to wolf a couple off a plate set out for visitors. In the last couple of months, PD Insurance has seen lots of claims – many in the thousands – for ingestion of common household items such as a nail, dishwashing cloth, shoe insole, meat-tray pad, pool cover, highlighter pen, socks and, very recently, tinsel off a Christmas tree!

clues, and whoever gets out first claims the ‘bragging rights.’ Most of the game play at Xscape Space is more suited to those aged 11 years and upwards and can be a great activity for parties. “While younger children will enjoy some aspects of the rooms, it’s best if the under 11’s are accompanied by a parent or caregiver to assist them with the clues.” For some people the idea of being in an escape room can be ‘a bit scary’ but you are never actually never locked in the room, as there is always an exit door that is not locked. Xscape Space is located at 2a Estuary Place, Richmond (off lower Queen Street). To check for game room availability, email: bookings@xscapespace.co.nz or phone 021 972 221. Nelson Fun Park - a fun experience for families In the heart of beautiful Tahunanui Beach, Nelson Fun Park is the perfect place, full of excitement and fun in a safe environment for the whole family, with the Hydroslide, Bumper Boat Rides and Mini Golf. The business is owned and operated by two local families with Michelle and Karen taking care of the day-to-day operations. The Fun Park has been a Nelson icon for over 30 years with affordable activities for the whole family. The Hydroslide is $10 for one hour, Mini Golf is $6 per person and Bumper Boats are $9 per ride. “We do a great combo deal for all activities for just $21 (saving of $4),” says Karen. If you haven’t got time to do everything in the one day, you can do the combo over a few days if you like. Nelson Fun Park is the perfect venue for birthday parties. “We have a party table

you can book, BBQ tables with umbrellas which are all free of charge,” says Karen. “Bring your own birthday cake and party food, watch the children play and leave all the stress behind!” Contact the Fun Park for your party or group bookings. “Recently, when it was raining, we had a group of 40 children here and because our hydroslide is fully enclosed, it makes a great wet

weather venue,” says Karen. “We also have a shop onsite with ice creams, drinks and slushies available.” The premises is currently operating under traffic light orange, and only people with a My Vaccine Pass are allowed to enter. Children under the age of 12 years and 3 months don’t need to provide a My Vaccine pass to enter. Face coverings are mandatory upon entry except for those who are exempt. Nelson Fun Park is located at 10 Hounsell Circle (Back Beach Road), Tahunanui Beach, Nelson. To find out more, visit www. nelsonfunpark.co.nz or pop over to their Facebook page, or call 0272460104. We are open every day over the school holidays (apart from Christmas Day). Gift Vouchers are perfect for Christmas stockings and are available at Nelson Fun Park.
