Hӧglund Glassblowing Studio - a family affair When Ola and Marie of Höglund Art Glass met at boarding school in Sweden at the age of fifteen they had no idea that their meeting would eventually launch the brand for which they are now famous the world over. Both worked at the Boda Glassworks before being accepted to study at the Orrefors Glass School in southern Sweden. They then spent three years in Swaziland establishing a glass workshop, the beginning of their glass-blowing adventures in other parts of the
world. Hearing about a glass business in Hokitika, Ola and Marie worked there for three years before setting up a glass studio at Craft Habitat in Richmond. In 1993 the couple moved to a brand-new glass-blowing complex in Lansdowne Road, Appleby, which has been the Höglund Glass home base ever since. For the last 12 years Marie and Ola have been making glass in Queensland, and then Central Otago during the winters, while
their son Ossie and his wife Annie have maintained the Nelson studio. Now back on home turf, the whole family are enjoying creating glass work together. Their other son Oliver continues to make glass lampshades in the Queensland studio which are sold in the Nelson gallery as well. While still producing the highly complex large glass pieces Höglund Art Glass are renowned for, they also have a range of beautiful items priced under $100. These include exquisite blown-glass
birds, the popular vinegar and oil bottles, goblets and a wide range of exquisite dichroic glass jewellery. The pendants, earrings and cufflinks in rainbow-like colours have become extremely popular with people wanting a unique piece in their jewellery collection. If you are looking for a fascinating and unique experience these holidays, be sure to head out to Hoglund Art Glass to enjoy the extensive studio, and on weekday mornings you can watch the glassblowers magically blow
molten glass into all manner of designs. Hoglund glass can be found in public and private collections around the world and Nelson is fortunate to have the heart of this highly successful glass-making business on their doorstep. With each piece individually made, you will find the perfect unique gift that can be wrapped beautifully and sent to any location, or perhaps even treat yourself to a piece of iconic glass art. www.hoglundartglass.com

Local adventure camp a popular holiday destination
Water slide at Quinney’s Bush Camp
Set in 10ha of spacious grounds with native trees and safe river swimming, Quinney’s Bush Camp is a popular back-to-basics adventure camp which is conveniently located 40km from Richmond and 70km from Murchison on SH6. “It’s a family tradition for a lot of people,” says manager Andrew Quinney. “We have families who come here year-after-year.” Andrew says the amazing thing about it is the wide variety of accommodation sites and daily amusements at the campground and there’s always something for the kids to do. “At this stage, we are fully booked over New Year’s and either side of those dates, and it’s mainly non-powered sites which are available,” says Andrew. “People can check our availability and make a booking on our website. One thing our customers really enjoy is that our non-powered sites

aren’t allocated, so when they turn up on the day, they can find a spot under a tree or near the river – there’s no limitation.” The camp also allows dogs and campfires, unless there’s a fire ban in place. Day visitors are welcome to experience everything at Quinney’s Bush for $7.50 per person. Quinney’s Bush was started in 1961 by the late Ray Quinney, then in 1996, Mark and Marama Quinney took on the business. Over the years, it has been substantially upgraded and remains a very popular holiday and school camp destination today. Amusements at the family-friendly campground (which run from December to February) include a flying fox, waterslide, go karts, trailer rides, and a kid’s programme. Activities that are always open includes safe river swimming and slide, animal feeding at the animal park, confidence course, skate park and basketball

court, eel feeding, giant tyre swing, small flying fox and BMX track. If you care to just relax, you can lie in the hammocks, stroll along the walking tracks, or sunbathe by the river. If you fancy a walk or jog, there is a fitness trail which traverses the outskirts of the camp. “We have seasonal staff who work here over summer, some of whom come back year-after-year which we are really grateful for,” says Andrew. “We offer recycling for all of our guests, including bins we provide for food scraps which we use to feed our pigs and chickens.” Quinney’s Bush is located at 255 Kohatu-Kawatiri Highway, Motupiko RD2, Nelson. To find out more, visit www. quinneysbush.co.nz Because the accommodation industry hasn’t been mandated by the government, Quinney’s Bush isn’t required to check vaccine passports.
