Councillor acting ‘odd’ on election trail Jacob Page Tasman District councillor and Richmond ward incumbent Mark Greening’s door-to-door campaign behaviour has been labelled ”aggressive” and ”odd” by two separate Richmond residents during this year’s council elections. Negative comments made towards cyclists by the man Mr Greening endorsed to be the next mayor, fellow councillor and Mountere and Waimea incumbent Dean McNamara, in a personal online blog six years, ago have also come to light. Mr McNamara, an incumbent Tasman District councillor, wrote a blog on his personal page on July 28, 2013 called ’Cyclists and Other Noxious Pests’ that cyclists were ‘lycra-clad tossers’ and they ‘wonder why the rest of the road users view them as noxious pests such as possums and fair game for roadkill.’ The comments were made after a cycle race allegedly left rubbish on the road outside Mr McNamara’s property. He says, while the blog has since been taken down, the comments were referring to the cyclists who allegedly littered during the race and clogged the waterways, and were not a generalised statement to all cyclists. The two Richmond residents, who do not know each other and wish to remain anonymous, claim they both had difficult encounters with Mr Greening at their homes while he was campaigning a fortnight ago. One resident described Mr Greening as ”pushy” and ”odd”. ”He pushed his way in and I made it quite clear I didn't have time to talk, but he kept going.

Councillor acting ‘odd’ on election trail from PAGE 1 be voting for the old ones, you’ve got to vote for the young one’s. ”I found it offensive. ”I was trying to say I don’t have time, and he was very pushy. ”I did feel uncomfortable. because my husband wasn’t home. ”It was very odd behaviour, he didn’t pick up any of the social cues,” she says. ”I just wanted him off the property.” The second resident had to have her partner come to the door to make sure everything was ok after the discussion around policy and mayoral endorsement appeared to escalate. ”I asked him a couple of questions last Sunday which got his hackles up and one of the questions was who he endorsed for mayor, and he said Dean McNamara and I

asked ’who’s he?’ ”Mark got very defensive about that but it was his whole aggressive... poking his finger in my face that made me quite angry.” The resident says Mr Greening was aggressive, confrontational and defensive when asked about council matters. ”It got to the point where my partner came up to the door and asked if I was all right. ”We’ve had other (candidates) knock on our door who have been polite and welcomed questions.” The second resident then looked up Mr McNamara on the internet and social media, which is when she discovered his blog. Mr Greening told the Waimea Weekly it ”is hearsay at best and clearly not correct”. I have spoken with thousands

of people across Richmond this year, and over the last six years, to properly represent this community and have only received positive feedback, so it is surprising to now hear of this last minute allegation surfacing before voting closes,” he says. ”Of the three elections I have been involved in, this one seems to have had an unfortunate element of desperation, from a few in the community who are afraid of real change.” Mr Greening is running as an independent and his 2019 campaign is not affiliated with any political party. However, he had door-knocked on behalf of the Labour Party in the past. Senior Labour Party member Rachel Boyack says she was concerned at reports of

Councillor Greening’s behaviour towards residents of the Richmond community while door-knocking. Boyack confirmed that some concerns had been raised with the team in the past. “Our Nelson team have worked hard to ensure an inclusive and supportive environment where volunteers and supporters feel welcome and safe” she said. “To be clear, Councillor Greening has had very little involvement in the Labour Party over recent years and is not an endorsed Labour Party candidate,” she says. His behaviour became so bad that one of his associates deliberately went ahead by 2-3 houses on their own to avoid being part of Mr Greenings over-aggressive interaction with members of the public.

Rubbish picked from Richmond’s shores Locals band together for breast cancer Kate Russell A church alter may seem like an unusual location for a catwalk, but next week’s fundraiser fashion show at Christ Church Cathedral is all for a good cause. ‘Couture at the Cathedral’ will be raising funds for the Nelson Tasman Regional Breast and Gynaecological Cancer Trust. This year, they hope to raise more than $20,000, which will help with contin-

ued support for patients and the trust. The show will feature bubbles and canapes on arrival as well as goodie bags and a charity auction. There will even be a “lads’ package” up for grabs featuring a signed Tasman Mako shirt, donated by Shane Drummond. Wed 16th Oct, 6:30 - 8:30pm at Christ Church Cathedral. Tickets are $65, VIP $80 from the Morrison Sq office or email nelson@ morrisonsquare.co.nz

Ron Argue, chairman of ‘Keep Richmond Beautiful’ (first on left), Ross Cullen (holding up the old exhaust above his head) & the rest of the team who removed the rubbish from Richmond’s shores. Photo: Bruno Saia. Bruno Saia A total of 340 kgs of rubbish was removed in a mornings work from our local shorelines recently. A team of 15 members from the ‘Keep Richmond Beautiful’ organisation found rubbish such as car parts, iron, synthetic material and even electric oil heaters, along with two large fence posts. “Some of the items collected included a vehicle exhaust system and the rest was what you would expect, for maybe the full disposable

nappy (diaper) and the plastic bags containing dog poo,” says Ron Argue, Chairman of ‘Keep Richmond Beautiful’. The ‘Big Beach Clean Up’ was done from Fittal Street to Best Island and the group was surprised by the amount of trash collected, but it was down on the amount of rubbish collected in previous years. “We only did this six months ago and I’m still quite surprised by how much we’ve got in since then,” says Ron. “We’ve picked up a lot of stuff, but not as many plastic bags as

expected. There were lots of them in the past,” he says. ‘Keep Richmond Beautiful work started back in the early ’90s and the ‘Big Beach Clean Up’s’ has been ongoing for about six years. “I do it because I am retired and I wanted to give something back to the community and cleanness stimulates cleanness,” says Ron. If you also want to help or join in next ‘Big Beach Clean Up’, check all the information you need at the group’s page on Facebook: Keep Richmond Beautiful.

Looking to the future at Summerset Susan Johnson

Beverley and Stuart Milnes on the patio of their new home. Photo: Susan Johnson

In one corner of Summersets’ new Richmond development retirement village two couples are settling in. The village has just been started and when complete will have leisure activities, coffee shop and hairdressers on site. Beverley and Stuart moved into the village last month and it’s their first brand-new home. The retired school teachers spent a lot of their working career moving around New Zealand. They have three children and when they moved to Nelson and retired they were a bit reluctant to take the plunge into the retirement village lifestyle. “We wanted to make it easier for the children,” says Stuart.

“I’ve been in and out of the hospital lately and Beverley has a problem with her knee. Only our middle son lives in Nelson so we don’t want them to worry about us,” he added. They both like the feeling of safety and Beverley is hoping to regain her confidence riding her trike again which she lost on the busy streets around their old home. “I’m also planning a vegetable garden and my son has built me an outdoor fishpond for my fish.” says Beverley. Heather and Graham have also just moved into their new home in Richmond Ranges retirement village. They are both Richmond ‘born and bred’ and have chosen to downsize to a smaller place. But, according to Graham, “life will continue

just the same, we’ll still go out to the family farm and help mow the lawns, for example”. “We like the convenience of a brand-new house and small

garden,” says Heather, “and we’re looking forward to more neighbours moving in. It looks nice at night with the lights and it’s quiet and safe.”

Increased protection for tenants and landlords Bruno Saia Karen (name changed to protect anonymity) used to live at a rental house in Richmond and the landlord was also the property manager. Karen lived there for seven years and they always had a friendly relationship. That was until Karen announced her intention of moving. The landlord started scheduling work at the property while she was inside and even go-

ing into the house with no previous authorisation. This is a situation faced regularly by tenants and is one of the reasons the Real State Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) is calling on central government to formally regulate the property management industry. “Tenant and landlord rights need to be protected,” says Kate Motley, Divisional Manager for property management for Harcourts Nelson and Richmond. “There

Christeen Mackenzie

are rules and regulations that the landlord has to follow, as do the tenants. In some extreme cases tenants are in a position where they will accept, because they do not want to lose their home,” she says. The REINZ regulation proposal is supported by 40 organisations around NZ and their intention is that the government consider the need for regulating the property management industry.

Medicine spring-clean at McGlashen Pharmacy

Bruno Saia

Bruno Saia Now is the time to get rid of all those old unwanted medicines which you have stored at home and no longer require. McGlashen Pharmacy is calling for people to ‘spring-clean’ their old medicines by taking them in for proper disposal. “We collect old medications so that they are not lying around their homes,” says Andrew McGlashen, pharmacist and managing director of McGlashen Pharmacy. Returning unnecessary medicine to be discarded is a safety measure. “All these medications could cause issues if they were taken past their expiry dates or for wrong purposes,” he says. Unfortunately, these medicines cannot be recycled and it’s essential for the environment to discard them correctly. “Disposing of old or unused medications in general waste is not a good idea. We can ensure that the medication is destroyed correctly and there are specific procedures for

Andrew McGlashen, pharmacist and managing director of McGlashen Pharmacy (42 Oxford Street, Richmond), with medicine up to 100 years old. Photo: Bruno Saia. that.” Andrew says. Most of the medication taken in to be destroyed has expired, but not all of it. “People can bring pills, syringes and other medical accessories. Some people start a three-month supply of medication, use it for a week and realise that does not agree with them or it is not having the desired effect and stop taking it. Leaving it lying around home is a safety risk.” “To avoid wasting medicine that you don’t want, ask your doctor

for ‘trial dispensing’. It allows him to prescribe for a couple of weeks and then if it works, , the patient can collect the remainder of the medication, with no extra cost. This was established to help reduce the surplus waste estimated to be over 40 million dollars of pharmaceuticals every year. “Medicines disposal also encourages more conversations around medication and its use – Pharmacy is after all your medication specialists.”

A businesswoman from Richmond has been selected as one of the finalists in this year’s Young Business Person Of The Year. The award is sponsored by Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce and Samantha Bell, owner of AccountsDept (Unit 4/203 Queen St), will be on the shortlist for the award. Samantha started AccountsDept at just 25 and now, seven years later, employs ten full time staff with room to expand. Her company supports over 100 businesses in the Nelson region with a wide range of services going above and beyond traditional bookkeeping. Samantha’s constant focus on development and improvement has contributed to her business success and her goals alongside current growth suggest big things to come for AccountsDept. “It’s really exciting to be acknowledged under the category and I think all the candidates represent the region well,” she says. About being the only local name amongst the finalists, she says: “I think that’s fantastic. Certainly, there is a huge amount of growth

Story published on 2 October: High speed is a risk for local families Comment on Facebook - Julia Twort: I’ve said it before and I will say it again… it’s not speed that is the problem. The problem is distracted drivers. We live in a technological world now. With flash cars that have all the bells and whistles and phones hooked up to them too. Lowering speeds creates more frustration and crashes due to people then going slower than 80. Get rid of the phones and other gadgets that people now fill their cars with and you won’t have such a problem. You can’t lower the speed limit in the whole of NZ from 100 to 80. Comment on Facebook - Richard Barker: The time difference for the 2k section along Main Rd Hope between 100 and 80 k/ph is only around 40 secs. This section of road has 2 major intersections, at Aniseed Road and Clover Road, and has resulted in a number of deaths in the time I have lived here. It also has commercial property entries which require a right-hand turn across cars doing a 100 k/ph in the opposite direction as well as the private drives in a built-up area.

A celebration of the older person Susan Johnson

Age Concern celebrated International Day of the Older Person with an afternoon tea and entertainment on the 1st of October. This annual event was held in Annesbrook Church and was very well attended with over 150 people enjoying the occasion. It included residents from most of the region’s retirement villages. The furthest to travel were the 14 folks who drove from the Jack Inglis Friendship Hospital in Motueka. Ladies from Summerset in the Sun put on a fashion exhibition called ‘Waste to Waist’. Their outfits had been made from recycled products such as plastic bags and bottles. Entertainment was provided by the Sun City ukuleles and ‘Sing Yourself Well’ group, enthusiastically conducted by Age Concern’s newest team member, Ruth Collingham. Age Concern would like to thank

the volunteers for their help on the day, Simplicity Funerals for providing the afternoon tea and the Nelson City Council for sponsoring the event.

Making WAVEs

(Where Art Values Environment) Susan Johnson WAVE (Where Art Values Environment) held their first Nelson/ Tasman exhibition at the weekend in The Honest Lawyer’s barn in Monaco. A small collection of artists had been invited to make art only from materials they found or bought from recycled/second-hand shops. The aim was to raise awareness for the environment and raise funds for Tasman Bay Guardians. The environmental group was founded in 2017 by tour group owners Stew Robertson and Helen Forsey and is

dedicated to marine conservation and education. Organised by artist Susan Allen, the idea grew out of conversations with the manager of the Honest Lawyer who donated the space for the exhibition. One of the artists, Victoria Moore, bought a couple of curtains from the recycling depot for $2 each. Depicting a woman in Victorian clothing surrounded by New Zealand flora and fauna, Victoria settled on the image when she heard how the Victorians reduced the huia numbers due to wanting to wear their feathers in their hats.

Just a thought... Ross Ferguson Richmond Community Church

Who Likes Change?

but I say to you...,” because they were so rigid and inflexible and totally resistant to change of any sort. The word that he used was the word repent, which is often translated as a change of mind (Greek ‘metanoia’), but which really meant a change of mind and a total change of heart and a change of direction with resulting life transformation. His message is still relevant and powerful and designed so that all people would see the benefits of embracing and being motivated to change, then as Gandhi said: “You’re in a better place to be the change that you want to see in the world.” Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops wellformed maturity in you. Romans 12:2 (Message).

It has been said ‘life is about change’. In fact, change is inevitable for everyone and for that reason we must learn to cope with change. As someone has said, “change is sometimes painful, sometimes beautiful, but most of the time, it’s both!” Yet most of us have an intense resistance to change. It seems that our brains are wired to like predictability and safety. We like the status quo, because we can stay in control, afraid to step out into the unknown! Anything that challenges what we think, or what we believe may require us to step out of our comfort zones, or rigid mindsets and discover that change can be good, freeing and even beautiful! We can accumulate knowledge, have a high IQ and even be strong emotionally (high EQ), but if we are unable to cope with change or adversity (AQ) we can become inflexible, limited and stunted and can miss out on one of the best things for our growth and our general well-being. We can either take on a powerless, reactive, victim mindset and become bitter, or we can make a courageous decision to embrace change and become stronger and better. Jesus understood change and he spoke about it a lot, which got Him into trouble especially with his own people! Many times, he challenged their legalistic mindsets, saying: “You have heard it said, Ross Ferguson, Richmond Community Church

Seeking plane waves and TV signals Susan Johnson On the cycle path in Appleby is a pale grey silo which in 2017 piqued the curiosity of cyclist Pete Laing who wanted to know what it was and why it was there. He did some research and approached the Waimea Weekly. The paper wrote a small article and a copy is still taped to the inside of the structure. The Tasman District Council have taken the information provided by the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust and put up a board outside for other curious passers-by to read. But Kerry Neal thinks it doesn’t tell the whole story. The foundations of the technology aircraft first had to rely on lies close by, and it was installed by his brother Errol Neal. Errol joined the Civil Aviation Authority as a radio technician in 1947, an ideal job for someone who had always been fascinated by electro-magnetic waves. Later in the early 1950’s he was living in Nelson and one of his major tasks was the installation of equipment that was to become known as the Appleby beacon. Adjacent to Cotterells Road, the beacon was positioned for the purpose of allowing aircraft to navigate the length of New Zealand. The tower was known as an NDB – Non Directional Beacon. The concrete foundations can still be seen with the warning sign to stay out and the house that held the technical equipment is now a private family home. Errol’s brother Kerry says ‘it was fascinating to watch the vapour trail of the planes (Viscount turboprop) make that slight correction as they flew over Appleby’. Later came the silo on the cycle track which basically helped correct sideways drift of the aircraft. “The building is a segment of a grain silo that was sent out from the United States, packed with all the equipment,” says Kerry. In his spare time Errol and his friends also became involved in bringing TV to Nelson. They walked around Nelson with a signal strength meter trying to determine the best position to set up a translator. “One spot on Princes Drive the signal spiked at lunch time every day and they couldn’t understand why. Until they realised that NAC’s Viscount was passing over at 12:30pm and the weak signal out of Wellington was bouncing off the plane!” says Kerry. Despite the risk of being shutdown by the authorities, Errol and his friend’s investigations found the perfect spot to set up a TV (top of Princes Drive) and on several occasions invited the locals to watch TV out the back of a van. The locals even provided their own couches. “My brother actually made a TV in the early days. He got an old hospital monitor and adapted it. It was small and the picture was green but you got used to it. You had to watch it with a towel over your head. He was so clever with that sort of thing, his nieces and nephews used to call him Uncle Aerial” says Kerry. The Tasman District Council are going to need a bigger board.

Environment project for local children Bruno Saia A group of children from Richmond School got together with teacher and game developer Bob Reynolds to play board games and show their concerns about the environment. The students are part of the school’s conservation group and they were introduced to an updated version of ‘The Conservation Game’, which was created by Bob in 1976.The goal is to stimulate the children

to be aware of environmental issues while they are having fun. The children also participated in an environmental poster competition. Bob, with Neil and Anne Page who lead Native Bird Recovery Richmond, were the judges at the ‘Conservation Stand Project’. They selected 17 posters made by the students and granted all of them with special prizes. “We made these posters and it’s about keeping our world tidy, and we made a competition

of it,” says 10-year old Aurora Robertson. “My poster was about ‘Go for green and don’t litter’. I wanted people to think about what they’ve done with their rubbish because one piece of rubbish can affect everyone’s life”, she says. Ryan McGlinchuy is 11-years old and he won a ‘New Zealand’s Birds’ book as a special prize for the most colourful poster. “It’s a pretty good prize and I liked it because birds are my favourite animal,” he says.

Trackman Trophy SaTurday 12Th ocTober

It’s back to the future for speedway!!! By Wayne Martin It’s another huge season here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway with a total of thirteen top class meetings pencilled in for the new summer season. A lot of the old favourite shows are back such as the Trackman Trophy night (opening night), Coca Cola Fireworks, Demolition Derby, Easter Extravaganza and the return of the King of the Clay meeting on 14th March. Also making a big come back after a season off is the Racing for the Kids meeting on the 15th February where we are once again raising funds for the Child Cancer Foundation. This entire meeting will be dedicated to the kids with two youth classes racing - both the Youth Ministocks racing their annual Ministock Mania (12yrs – 16yrs) and the Nelson Club are hosting the Quarter Midgets (8yrs – 15yrs) as well. That night we will also be running

the kids bike races as it was so popular last season. The Nelson Speedway Association will be raising money in the run up to this event as well as on the night so please help us by digging deep to help those kids that are fighting the tough fight. If you are more interested in the major championships, then we have a stack of them as well. The big one for the season would have to be the Southern Streetcars New Zealand Midget Grand Prix on the 18th January. If you were lucky enough to have witnessed the New Zealand championship here a couple of seasons ago then you would know it was one of the most exciting meetings to have ever been held here. We expect to see all the big names in Midget racing here once again and possibly the appearance of some American drivers as well. The small but super-fast Nelson track is perfect for Midget racing so this should once again be a stunner!

Expect this type of action at the PTS Superstock Stampede. Photo credit to Imagepress

Speedway Keeping on the Midget theme the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway is also hosting the Absolute Energy South Island Midget championship on Dec 14th. This will be a great chance for all the Midget drivers to get some laps and get dialled in for the Grand Prix a month later. Other South Island titles we are hosting are the Hi Reach Access Solutions South Island Superstock championship on Feb 29th and our first ever Donaldson Civil South Island Production Saloon championship will feature on the same night as the Demolition Derby on the 28th Dec. As far as other top line promotions go, we once again host two rounds of the Hydraulink War of the Wings Sprintcar series with the first of our rounds scheduled for the 16th Nov and the second later in the season on the 28th Mar. The longstanding Super Saloon series is also back for another season with the now named Mag & Turbo Supercup series pencilled in for the 1st of Feb. Super Saloons have been a big part of our clubs history so it’s always great to be hosting a big field of these fuel injected monsters here in Nelson. Also, this season we have scheduled the Stockcar team’s triples on the 30th

Luke Higgins and Jack Burson who are kids of two of our local legend drivers. Photo credit to BM Photography November which will see three stockcar teams battle it out in a round robin format with the Teams Brawl trophy on the line for the overall winner. There has been a distinct lack of teams racing here the last couple of seasons especially after the demise of the once strong Nelson Tigers but with the Tasman Thunder fielding a strong team this

season the club are getting behind them and there is nothing better than a hardhitting teams race here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway. The two teams to take on the local Tasman Thunder are yet to be named but we are working on the Canterbury Crushers and the Greymouth Grizzlies to hopefully fill the spots. Teams racing is always a crowd

favourite here in Nelson so this should be a great show. Other Stockcar teams races are in the planning stages as well with some Streetstock teams racing thrown in for good measure for local fans to see the Nelson Knights get some practice laps in before their big teams race meetings around the country. Last (but by no means least) is what will be the biggest new promotion we have seen in many years here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway. This season will see the birth of our new and exciting PTS Superstock Stampede on the 16th Nov. With the Superstock numbers down here in Nelson and with such a huge history in this class over the years we (the club) and the Superstock drivers and organisers have got together to come up with what will be the next big thing in Superstock racing here in New Zealand. Already some big sponsors have come on board with this event which will cost in the vicinity of $25,000 to host. This event was capped at thirty-six entries with three extra wildcards thrown in by the promoter which will see thirty nine top line Superstocks all vying for that top spot on the podium after a fifteen lap feature race.

Speedway A different type of format has been put together for the Stampede with all the drivers seeded and put into three groups. Each group will race each other over the night with the top twenty six point’s scorers going through to the fifteen lap one race final. To make it even more interesting the top ten qualifiers will first compete in a six lap shootout with the driver who takes the win getting pole position in the final as well as the shootout cash. Wherever the top ten finish in the shootout is where they will start in the final winner takes all feature race. This is a different type of format for the Superstock class but one that should promote some fast furious racing this early in the season. This will be a “must see” event as we will also be hosting the Hydraulink War of the Wings Sprintcar series here on the same night. This meeting will also be live streamed to the world through The Pits media as well so if you can’t make it on the night you can enjoy the racing where ever you are on this planet. Once again we are running ten classes with the intention of hosting Quarter Midgets and Historic Stockcars at varying times during the season. The Three Quarter Midgets are still showing some good growth with drivers from the likes of Ministocks moving into that class while the likes of Streetstocks, Stockcars, Production Saloons, Sidecars and Youth Ministocks numbers continue to remain steady. The blue ribbon classes such as Midgets,

WEDNESDAY 9 October 2019

Sprintcars and Superstocks, although light on numbers, will still be turning laps here with the club putting on the different types of series and promotions such as the PTS Superstock Stampede to attract the out of town competitors to boost the local numbers. They say the strength of any sporting club is in its juniors and it’s no different here at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. Our Youth Ministock class just keeps on turning out driver after driver into the big brother classes and often the experience they gain from the youth class normally means they are hot on the pace from their first foray into the senior ranks. This season sees a new bunch of fledgling twelve-year olds join the rest of the kids in another big field of Ministocks as the speedway nursery continues to go from strength to strength. A couple of these younglings that will have a few eyes on them this season are Luke Higgins and Jack Burson who are both sons of a couple of local speedway legends and after the practice runs pre-season both look to have come to grips with the Moutere clay. The Youth Ministock class is the future of our club and the future looks bright for more speedway stars to come out of the local Nelson nursery. Any more information can be found at nelsonspeedway.co.nz or via the official club Facebook page just search for Nelson Speedway Association Inc. This Saturday night the gates open 5.00pm with the racing starting at 6.00pm.

HEALTHY THRIVING WORKPLACES SHAPING NZ’S FUTURE

PHYSICAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE Physical Health is defined as the condition and functioning of your body, from internal organs of the heart, lungs, kidneys to your joints, bones and muscles. Both physical health and mental health are critical in people thriving and reaching their full wellbeing potential.

Get Out of The Dark …Get medical professionals on your team!

The work we do and the lifestyle we lead impacts our physical health significantly as well as our genetics and environment. What you bring to work (ie: your health conditions, previous injuries, fitness level, etc.) affects your risk at work as well as the way you feel. What you do at work and the way you do it also impact on your physical health.

IMPROVE RECOVERY TIMES, OUTCOMES AND COSTS

The Team at Hemisphere Health approach physical health with the motto “Prevention is better than Cure” and they work directly with businesses to keep their workers feeling well and performing at their best - from the day they are hired to the day they retire.

Call now to discuss our priority service workplace injury clinic, so you can be confident injuries are managed with the best interest of your workers and your business in mind.

When a workplace injury does occur the Team at Hemisphere Health provide fast access to the best care and rehabilitation for the injured worker as well as supporting the company to maintain relationships, ensure an optimal outcome and to minimise costs.

Five Key areas you can target to improve business efficiency and employee health: 1. Understanding a candidate’s health risks and ensuring the right fit as part of the recruitment process

Medical Reviews PREVENT SMALL HEALTH PROBLEMS BECOMING BIG COSTS

2. Training employees in risk awareness and efficient workplace techniques (how to do things, not just what to do) 3. Identifying and resolving pain and discomfort early with physiotherapy including workplace modifications to reduce injury risk. 4. Ensuring effective injury response, management and return to work processes 5. Managing health in the workplace proactively; from specific chemical/ environmental hazards to aging workers risk factors

When to Refer: 1. Mental Health issues affecting attendance or performance at work 2. Employee sourced medical certificates or recurring absences causing business uncertainty and frustration 3. Health conditions or symptoms increasing business H&S risk

MEDIUM

Dr Scott and Gemma Newburn (Occupational Physician and Physiotherapist) returned to New Zealand after five years working in Australia. We settled in Central Otago and immediately saw the vastly different H&S culture. We saw employers struggling to navigate the systems and serious workplace injuries that were poorly managed and potentially preventable. These harsh realities shocked and inspired us to get out of the clinic and into the workplace where we could affect real change. We took the plunge with a move to Nelson, investing in and remodeling an old medical centre building in Richmond, opening Hemisphere Health and having our second baby all in the first few months of 2017! We love New Zealand’s hard-working culture but there are some downsides to our ‘she’ll be right’ attitude that results in some of the worst workplace health and injury statistics in the world. We have worked hard to recruit a great team of likeminded health professionals building the foundations of a fresh approach to workplace health supporting employers and their workers. With the success of the 2018 Chamber of Commerce Business Award for the best Emerging Business, 2019 has been a busy year recruiting two more Occupational Health Doctors to manage the increasing demand and we continue to work towards our vision of healthy thriving workplaces shaping New Zealand’s future.

HEMISPHERE HEALTH ARE YOUR WORKPLACE HEALTH AND WELLBEING PARTNER

The Real Cost of Workplace Injuries and Illness is Greatly Under-Estimated Physical and mental illness in the workplace costs New Zealand businesses millions of dollars each year. In one year alone, approximately 6.7 million working days in New Zealand are lost to absence due to ill-health, costing the economy $1.4 billion across the country.

EAP: EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE COUNSELLING

Plus, workers who are sore, sick or mentally unwell have higher accident and injury rates and reduced work performance. So it makes good business sense for companies to invest in ways to maximise the health of their employees which leads to a healthy business. One local business is on a mission to provide practical and cost-effective health, wellbeing and injury solutions that improve experience and outcomes for all business and their people Hemisphere Health is unique as a team of health professionals working solely with employers to support them in optimising health and wellbeing in their workforce. They are a diverse group of specialist workplace Doctors, Physiotherapists and Counsellors all working together as one unit. Hemisphere Health helps pro-active businesses to understand and solve workplace health issues which can directly affect their bottom line

Employers can now get fast access to workplace health professionals that understand the systems and have the skills to coordinate and manage all clinical care and referrals from day one to full return to work. Hemisphere Health value communication as the key to successful outcomes, keeping employers informed every step of the way so they can both support their people and minimse the impact of injuries and illness on their business.

Stress Anxiety Depression Struggles with work/life balance Grief and loss Personal issues Alcohol & Drug problems

Hemisphere Health offers complementary workplace appraisals to discuss the challenges local businesses are experiencing and can share practical solutions.

MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE Mental health issues tend to be less visible than physical injuries, yet they can have a critical impact on business productivity and profitability. While mental health is frequently seen as the individual’s problem, these issues often impact on the safety, wellbeing and performance of the team. Across the world 1 in 3 people at work suffer from symptoms of mental ill-health.

Thriving

Mental distress can show itself as anger, interpersonal conflict, sick leave, disengagement, poor work performance, mistakes and accidents – all of which cost businesses financially and take time to resolve, especially if they are not dealt with early.

Based in Richmond Hemisphere Health has recently launched a Workplace Mental Health model to support local businesses to better understand and manage mental health issues they may be experiencing in their workplace. They have developed a practical 3 step model NOTICE - SAY - DO, that they are now training local individuals and workplaces to be more confident to recognise, talk about and take action early in the workplace. This proactive approach can reduce the likelihood of mental stress turning to distress or mental ill health. NOTICE: How to notice signs and symptoms of mental stress and distress early SAY: How to have the difficult conversations and be confident in what to say and what not to say DO: The confidence to take action to ensure people are supported in the workplace and have access the appropriate support This NOTICE – SAY – DO model is the foundation of their very effective and affordable Mental Health First Aid course. For the month of October they are offering an introductory 2 for 1 special with two spaces for only $170. Hemisphere Health also offer a full range of services to support workplace mental health; including EAP Counselling, Health and Wellbeing Medical Reviews, Performance Coaching and Wellbeing Champion Training.

www.hemispherehealth.co.nz

Given that statistically most of us are or will be working alongside someone suffering from mental health issues, what can businesses do to help? Talking with someone about their mental health or emotional wellbeing can feel intrusive, uncomfortable, none of our business, and we may be concerned we’re about to open-up a can of worms. However, on the flipside doing and saying nothing is potentially very costly to the business and the struggling worker. Wellbeing

Hemisphere Health developed this Mental Health Continuum to approach workplace mental health and wellbeing. Everybody experiences ups and downs on the spectrum with day to day, week to week and month to month variance. Their Mental Health First Aid course uses this spectrum as a practical tool to help educate and train people to notice when colleagues are potentially moving from functioning to struggling. They are then taught how to talk to them, show support and access appropriate care.

The annual Nelson Pine Industries Chamber of Commerce Business Awards recognise innovation and creativity in the business sector and are a highlight of Nelson Tasman’s business calendar. This year marks the event’s 31st anniversary. As well the recognition for local organisations, the awards provide an opportunity to benchmark businesses and advise how they can continue to grow. Held in November each year, the black-tie dinner is a special night of networking and celebrating success. This year there were 44 entries and nominations across all the categories. This year’s awards take place on Fri-

day, November 1st, at the Trafalgar Centre. Six local businesses have entered the Nelson Weekly Emerging Business award for a business that has started trading within the last 2 years. Amongst those participating is Archery Park, a business which combines a visit to a rare area of pristine native forest with a simulated archery hunting experience into a unique outdoor experience for all ages. Archery Park is for anyone who is interested in archery and a new way to experience nature. Located at Cable Bay Adventure Park, its archery adventures provide guided archery, team events, archery introductions and professional training facilities. Georgia Molea Homekill Ltd has also entered the ‘emerging business’ category. Partnered with Ellis Creek Farms, it is the only dual operated butchery in Golden Bay where they produce local products from locally grown animals they raise themselves on the land that they live on. “I’m in the most amazing place with my career with so much opportunity to develop my own knowledge whilst enjoying my passion in the butchery industry,” says Georgie. “Our region grows amazing animals

and I’m grateful I get to work with them to provide our wider community with products from the paddock to the plate, knowing that they’ve been respected through the whole process.” Another category is The NZME Small Business Award for a business that has an annual turnover of less than $1 million. Abel Tasman EcoTours and social enterprise Tasman Bay Guardians, which are founded and managed by Stew Robertson and Helen Forsey of Motueka, have entered this category. With years of experience transporting visitors around the stunning Abel Tasman National Park, the pair have up-skilled in marine ecology and environmental science. They have merged to create an authentic tourism experience that leaves a positive impact on the environment. The couple recently formed Tasman Bay Guardians to create a professional aquatic delivery team, educating kids, the wider community, facilitating clean-ups, environmental governance groups, habitat restoration and community collaboration. NZ Boat Sales Nelson is also competing in this category. Based in the stunning calm waters of Tasman Bay,

Mako ahead for final round on Saturday By Jonty Dine and Peter Jones It was ugly at times, but the scoreboard was pretty reading for Mako fans as their side remain unbeaten with a ninth win in Nelson on Sunday afternoon. With a guaranteed home semi-final, the Mako opted to give some of its wider squad members a run and they made the most of their chance, running in eight tries in a 52-6 rout of Northland at Trafalgar Park. Impressive performances from the likes of Fetuli Paea, Jamie Spowart, Ryan Coxon and Te Ahiwaru Crikidaveta illustrated the depth the premiership table toppers Will Jordan put in a superb shift at possess. The Mako butchered two tries in the opening fullback for the Mako against Northfive minutes and allowed Northland to draw first blood land. Photo: Evan Barnes/Shuttersport after 15 minutes. Tasman finally crossed the chalk through Te Ahiwharu Crikidaveta and its powerful rolling maul, but Jack Debreczeni kept his side in front with two quality penalty goals. It wouldn't last however as the Mako took the lead with a scorching second try - Mitch Hunt breaking through and linking with Will Jordan who was far too quick for the cover. The hosts put the early errors to bed and followed up with a third soon after, again on the back of a clinical lineout drive with Sione Havili the beneficiary. Co-head coach Goodman says there were FREE TRAINING • FREE TRAINING some little frustrations with execution and • FREE TRAINING option-taking in the first half, but he was (16 week course) happy to claim the five points. Riding on a bucket bike Bruno Saia Ruby Inwood has found a way to enjoy her passion for motorbikes without breaking the bank. The 17-year old who lives in Appleby has found that with bucket race bikes she now has a chance to join the sport.

“It is an awesome sport if you love motorbikes. I really enjoy it. It’s cheap and any young person can get into it,” says Ruby. “You can have your bucket bike for about $2,000, and for that you can join ‘Bucket Racing Nelson’ on Facebook and get all the information you need.”

That’s what Ruby did before she got her first ride on a bucket bike, on Saturday morning, at the Redwood Valley Go-Kart track in Appleby. “The feeling of nervousness rushed through my veins but the adrenaline pushed me to try and break the limits getting to know your bike,” she says. “Once you get to know it, it’s an awesome sensation and to have awesome people guiding you is the best. I felt comfortable and I felt so thrilled to be doing something I love and I’ve wanted to do it for ages. Bucket biking is my way to

relax at the weekend.” Bucket racing is taking a lowpowered commuter motorcycle with a maximum capacity of 150 ccs and removing the entire road going gear, creating the cheapest form of motorcycle racing in the New Zealand. Paul Jameson is a bucket bike racer and a member of ‘Bucket Racing Nelson’. He helped Ruby with her first try and says that bucket racing was a Kiwi way to adapt to a challenging situation. “It started around 40 to 45 years ago. It is a New Zealand innovation. The first bucket race was

held at Woodbourne Airforce base in Blenheim. At that time, it was based around aircraft mechanics and engineers. They had small capacity commuter bikes and they couldn’t use any competition parts, so anything that they could engineer themselves was fine, but they weren’t allowed to use race parts,” says Paul. “Now it has evolved a little bit. Happens on full-size racetracks and also in go-kart tracks across the country. It’s really good because it’s a small bike, a small track, makes a lot of sense,” he says.

s w e N g n i h s Fi Spring, finally! Dominik Berghamer The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club season has started on the first of the month and while the odd snapper has been caught in the shallows the majority of them still seem to hang around d’Urville Island. This doesn’t mean that fishing in the Bay is pointless, quite the opposite! At the moment you can see a lot of surfcasters, especially on the back beach and on Rabbit Island. Most of them are not after snapper but rig sharks, a species often overlooked by other anglers. Not only do they make excellent eating, they are also great fun to catch – if you know how! The trick is to use the right bait, rig will hardly ever eat fish or squid baits, they don’t even have teeth. Instead, they exclusively feed on shellfish and crustaceans, paddle crabs seem to be a favourite. If you can’t catch any of these supermarket prawns

will do the trick too (and are easier to attach to the hook). Specialised gear is not essential, but don’t underestimate these fish, they are powerful fighters and can grow up to 30kg! (the average fish will be around 3 to 5kg). If you fish from the shore you don’t have to cast far, rig will come right into the shallows, especially if the water is a bit murky or at night. Bleed, gut and trunk (chop off head and fins) your catch immediately and put it on ice for best results. The fillets are white, firm and suitable for any type of cooking, fish and chips being an all-time favourite. Rig sharks can be entered into the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club competition, an ideal opportunity to snag some early points, even when it’s too windy to take the boat out. Local Spring Race for all ages Vvonne West Nelson runners and walkers were delighted that the long-awaited 5km Spring Race Series started last Wednesday from Smugglers in Tahunanui. This series of 5 races, which will continue each Wednesday at 6pm throughout October, is organised by Athletic Nelson with race directors Carys Coleman and Pete Marshall. People of all ages with all levels of fitness are welcome to take part in these races, which are a great way to get out and run/ walk with other like-minded people. Race organisers were very pleased with the turnout of 79 keen participants for the first race - a fast, flat circuit around the streets in the Tahunanui area. While the main emphasis of these races is having fun while you run, competition at the front of the field was intense, with only 1 second separating Hayden Squance, 17.09mins, from secondplaced male Joe Robson. Likewise in the women’s field, Candice Riley, 19.17mins only took 4 seconds out of Klaartje Van Schie. Peter Hague was the clear winner of the walking section in 30.12mins. Next Wednesday’s event promises to be lots of fun for everyone, with the course planned to be around the waterfront area of Tahunanui beach. This 5km series is

Until Friday 11 October you can apply for a special vote by calling or visiting a Council service centre in Richmond, Motueka or Takaka to pick up special voting papers. This is the first time I’ve been able to vote in the local body elections and I’ve grabbed the chance. It’s so important to have a say in who you want running your local community, especially right now. It’s such a pivotal time for our region with some really huge decisions to be made about issues like land use. These are things that are going to affect us all well into the future so why wouldn’t you want to be part of deciding who’s in charge? Get those votes in now before it’s too late! Alpine Fault Magnitude 8 (AF8) We can't predict earthquakes, but we can prepare for them. Public science talk: Old St John's Nelson, 23 October, 7.00 pm.

Kingsland Forest road and firebreak maintenance

HAVE YOUR SAY: For details of our current consultations, head to tasman.govt.nz/feedback.

Help us plan for the future of Saxton Field

Reduced speeds proposed to cut serious crashes

We’re reviewing the way we manage Saxton Field – and we need your help to ensure a bright future for our region’s largest sports, recreation and events venue.

We propose to reduce speed limits on 67 roads across the District to reduce road deaths and serious injuries, and ensure consistency across the roading network. Public consultation is open until 1 November. Lower speed limits are suggested on roads that have been identified as providing the greatest opportunity to reduce deaths and serious injuries. In addition, lower limits are suggested on other roads to: • address inconsistencies in the current speed limits; • reduce the severity of crashes on some roads which have a poor safety record and where the current speed limit is not safe or appropriate;

Have your say

Research shows an undeniable relationship between speed and road safety – there is no other risk factor that has a more powerful impact on accidents or injuries than speed.

The proposed roads were selected following a review that included looking at roads requested by the community, and an assessment of the highest-risk roads.

Work will begin on 21 October to install the new section of watermain. During the work, there will be diggers and workers in the berm, which will cause some noise, dust and vibration. Vehicle access to some properties may be restricted for short periods of time and there will also be speed restrictions on the road. The new watermain will become operational in mid-November, and the water supply will be interrupted for a few hours during this time. It’s planned that all work will be finished by the end of November. Find out more: For more information, search ‘Bird Lane’ at tasman.govt.nz, or email project manager Alistair Stevens on projects@tasman.govt.nz.

Motueka dump station on the move The Council has built a new dump station in Motueka (where self-contained camping vehicle empty their waste tanks) at the western end of Marchwood Park Road, near the airport, off Queen Victoria Street. This will replace the dump station at the Hickmott Place carpark which has created issues over recent years. The changeover to the new location will happen in midOctober and signs will go up directing people to the new location.

Saxton Field is your public space and this is your chance to let us know how you would like to see the park managed in future.

• and recognise wider community support for changes on some roads.

Other trails will be affected briefly throughout the period. Please pay attention to the signs and don't enter work areas for your own safety.

We are upgrading a water main on the southern side of Wakefield’s Bird Lane to cater for future growth, ensure water flow is sufficient for fire-fighting and provide residents with a more reliable water supply. It will also mean less disruption to residents if there are any problems with the pipes in future.

The way we manage Saxton Field was last reviewed in 2008, so it’s time we took another look to make sure our management plan is fit for purpose.

This initial round of consultation will help us write a first draft of the management plan. There will be another opportunity to comment on the draft itself in May 2020.

Henry Road will be closed, but access will be available through Lookout Road.

Bird Lane water main upgrade

Between 4 October and 16 December 2019 we’ll be asking what you enjoy about Saxton Field, how happy you are with the opportunities provided for sport, recreation and play, as well as the natural environment and landscape. Most importantly we want to know: What’s your vision for the future of Saxton Field?

• respond to growth and development in some areas which is changing the nature and use of some roads;

Road safety has deteriorated both nationally and in Tasman over the past three years. We want to reverse that trend and make sure our residents and visitors return home to their loved ones once they have finished their journeys.

From 2 October to 1 November, maintenance work will take place in the Kingsland Forest area.

First stage consultation closes 16 December 2019

A joint Nelson Tasman speed survey earlier this year, completed by about 2000 people, found that: • 76% of Tasman respondents think speed limits should be safe and appropriate for the road type, rather than the historic blanket 100kmh rural and 50kmh urban speed limits • 81% of Tasman respondents think speed limits should be less than 50kmh on busy residential/school roads • 81% of Tasman respondents think speed limits should be less than 100kmh on narrow sealed rural roads

Online: Visit tasman.govt.nz/feedback for more information and to fill in the survey. In writing: You are welcome to submit written comments and suggestions, either via email to info@saxtonfield.nz or post c/- Tara Fifield, Community Development Department, Tasman District Council, 189 Queen Street, Private Bag 4, Richmond Nelson, 7050. In person: Our consultant Rob Greenaway is happy to speak to your group or community organisation. Phone our Council office 03 543 8400 to arrange a time. You are invited under s.41(5) Reserves Act 1977 to send written suggestions to Tasman District Council on the proposal to prepare a management plan for Saxton Field (this park is jointly managed by Nelson City and Tasman District Councils).

Nelson Matters

Nelson Matters 9 October 2019 It is good news for Stoke that a new banking hub is to be established in the suburb early next year. This is a good outcome after the blow last year that the combined existing Kiwibank/Postshop in Putaitai St would close. This positive outcome is the product of strong advocacy by Grey Power, Mayor Rachel Reese and the hundreds who attended last year’s public meeting and the thousands who signed our petition. It was an awful shock last November when Kiwibank and NZ Post announced the closure. There had been no consultation despite these publicly owned companies tell-

ing Parliament that they did not withdraw services without first talking to the community. It was particularly galling when the Government had promised in its Coalition Agreement that it would be expanding services in the regions. It also made no sense when both Kiwibank and NZ Post Services in Stoke were busy and the population was growing. My greatest concern was the impact on the 4,500 older residents in Stoke, many of whom depend on face to face banking services for independence. Many older people, particularly those in their 80s and 90s do not use internet banking. Nor is the return trip by bus

into the Nelson branch realistic for many of these seniors. This U-turn is a credit to the united community response. The message from last year’s public meeting was unequivocal in wanting to retain services. I thank Stoke businesses for getting in behind the campaign and petition. Nelson Grey Power President Christine Tuffnell’s presentation to the Select Committee was stunning. She got the message through so effectively that even Government MPs from Labour, NZ First and the Greens found the closure indefensible. There is still work to ensure we get a good outcome. The existing Post Shop/Kiwibank closes on 16 Octo-

544 Waimea Road, Nelson

ber. It is to reopen on 21 October as a pharmacy and Post Agency run by Nelson’s Hardy St Pharmacy. The new banking hub in Stoke will provide face to face services for all six banks – ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank, TSB and Westpac. It will be a multi-branded smart ATM with online banking facilities with a support person to provide guidance and assistance. The new service may be in the Stoke Library, the Pharmacy or the new Greenmeadows Community Centre. I will be working with the Banking Association to get the service up and running next year in consultation with the Stoke community. My only disappointment is that if

Kiwibank and NZ Post had properly consulted with our community last November we would have avoided the uncertainty and gap in banking services this summer until the new banking hub opens in March. This positive outcome for banking services in Stoke shows that well organised petitions can make a difference. Two other Nelson petitions are still before Parliament. I will be working to ensure the same success with Karen Dow’s petition for introducing random roadside drug testing and Wendy Hamer’s on improving the rights of victims in cases involving those not guilty by way of insanity. Advt.
